I’m A Sensual Semite

Menahem Wecker reviews a new book called Jews & Sex:

Abrams opens his own study of the ways people have responded to Jewish involvement in pornography by critiquing Luke Ford, “a self-styled adult industry gossip-monger.” Abrams argues that Ford, who has since given up his porn sites for a blog with the subheading “Your Moral Leader: Jews, Judaism, Journalism,” overestimates Jewish involvement in the industry. Not only do Ford and others claim that Jews in the porn industry represent the larger Jewish population, Abrams suggests, but anti-Semites also turn to pornography to show how degenerate all Jews are. Abrams stresses that the performers in question “tend to be secular Jews, having received varying degrees of Jewish education but, by and large, define their Jewish identity in cultural rather than religious terms.”

Abrams’ chapter becomes a warning not to romanticize the story of Jews and sex. Though it is an area in which more scholarship is needed, there is no excuse for sloppiness and assumptions that overestimate Jewish involvement in all things sexual. And asked how he responds to people who say pornography is disgusting and the entire enterprise should be ignored, Abrams said, “It’s there. It’s as much a part of our culture as allegedly non-dirty industries, so it should not be ignored simply because some people can’t stomach it.”

What’s With My Bigotry?

Because it’s fun!

Joe emails:

I stumbled across your ‘blog’ quite accidentally today and was struck by a few things. First, that this blog is a lot less ‘porn’ oriented than your past writings. That’s likely to be a good thing.

Because we connected a few years ago, I decided to read a few essays of yours. And to tell you the truth, although I was impressed with the range of articles, the content could – at times – be disturbing. Not because the subject matter was disturbing, but because your treatment of it was.

And secondly, there appears to be a concerted undercurrent of right-wing proselytizing that appears to pervade just about everything you write. And it gets in the way. It minimizes any authority you might have on your subject.

As such, your "journalism" (seemingly well-researched, passionate and interesting as it aspires to be) tends to get caught up in your own quasi-moral view of the world. This is evidenced as you litter your writing with pejorative asides and slurs which have the effect deflating the full intent of the articles, and, makes the reader question your larger motives.

We all know that no journalism is totally objective. But you seem to relish in the mid-culture kitsch aspects instead of using the full measure of your intellect to render deeper, more insightful conclusions. You appear almost gleeful every time you get the chance to slander anyone you regard as progressive, gay, or ‘artistic’ in a way you seem not to be able to accept or understand. Instead of journalism, often, what I find I am reading is something a lot closer to some pseudo-intellectual ultra-right Nazi newspaper that presents itself as a legitimate intellectual exercise, but is really an attempt to connect half-truths in such a way as to provide one opportunity after another to introduce your own narrow world view.

Your "approach-avoidance" relationship with the Jewish community is interesting. It’s as if your strangely drawn to it, but feel the need to slander it too … often connecting the Jewish culture with less-than-noble attributes. This conflict of your is palpable and, well, interesting. Not unlike the kind of stuff I would imagine Mel Gibson goes through in his daily life. Often, you constantly connect Jewish-ness with pornography, gay lifestyles et al. As if the sleaze aspect of that is the full measure of what your prepared to analogize. One would not expect you to write how Jews, given their more limited population, boasts the largest number of doctors, scientists, researchers etc. No. What you focus on is the darker underbelly of Jewish life …. and it can be said that ANY ethnic group does in fact have a similar number of "darkside" individuals within their own group.

This leads a lot of what you write about to come off as sloppy and ill-conceived. Like you can’t wait to get at what you would consider to be "the meat", the glossy, neon, non-cultured Entertainment Tonight (and all those other shows) aspect of your articles. One tends to come away from your stuff feeling like your more interested in the sizzle than the steak. Perhaps, had you actually graduated from college, and developed the skills appropriate to journalistic integrity, you might have been better able to balance the "darker" stuff you love to dwell upon, and balance that out with real insightful conclusions rather than the spurious ones you make with gleeful abandon.

What your writing lacks is conscience, and the knowledge that one can be both a crusading truth-seeker/storyteller and still employ some sense of delicacy on matters that stray from the usual fare. You falsely believe that using your writing as a bludgeon is endemic of a hard-boiled reporter doing his thing. What you forget is that once the writing tends to reflect more on the writer than the subjects that writer addresses, a certain "crackpot" element tends to creep in between the lines. Add to that, your own predisposition to promote a sensibility that comes off shorn of tolerance for lifestyles and points of view that are different from your own, and what results makes you seem the very cliche of the white bigot. Maybe you are none of those things. But so many of your essays exude that "vibe" that I suspect you either really mean it, or your slap-dash style is so ingrained you fail to see it. What results is your "excuse" for attacking your subjects. This is not journalism. This slimy, slanderous, ugly, and unskillful. And I think your attempts to project something other is – to the trained eye – just another attempt to find an audience of untrained and moderate intelligence readers who will buy into your assertions and distortions as the "real deal."

I always appreciate points of view that are not like my own … especially when those viewpoints are smart, intellectually astute, and are based more on ideas, than personal attacks which reflect the writer’s own intolerance. For instance, I can read Justice Scalia’s reasonings and admire him for his thought processes and still disagree … or, agree, as I sometimes do. But what he doesn’t do is take pleasure promoting discordant attacks on a lifestyle, ore a religious group, or an individual and then associate those persons or groups with heinous analogies and simple-minded conclusions designed to denigrate or assail them with a snarky attitude designed to look clever. Your more interested in sensationalism , than real substantive reporting …. and it to those who read for a living, or at very least, know how to read and break down what they read for analysis, your failings as a legitimate source of information shines through like a beacon in the night.

The Principal’s Office

When I was bad, I’d get called in to the principal’s office.

During the long walk down the hallway, I’d start thinking of excuses.

"But what about Daniel? He wrote about divisions in the school. Angst. Conflict. Division. And what about Mary? She wrote that you were surly. A little bit surly. How’s what I did any different? Shouldn’t we have one standard for all writers? Is it because I’m Jewish? It’s because I’m 1/16th Chinese, ain’t it?"

Talkshow Host Roy Masters Attacks His Listeners

Juno emails:

He almost envies porn sites as they generate big bucks.

He laments how so few donate to his show.

He acts in an over the top, near breakdown type of way and has announced that he will do this for the next two weeks….

…then he says he doesn’t care if the show goes away…oh please!

Roy says he says most of this CFS stuff is remembered pain being clung to….your system is being a ttacked by your mind is his usual deal…. meditation thing he gives out is a cure all….free to download…..monitor him AND dennis prager. you can hear his latest show by clicking on it….the store has the CF syndrome download on it.

Here’s more on Roy Masters from Eliot Stein.

The Large Breasted High School Student And What She Has To Teach Us About Japanese Journalism

Here’s the video.

Joe emails:

I was reviewing some news stories on youtube from Japan and stumbled on this one. It is entitled "High School Co-ed with the largest breasts." The interview is silly, but where they take this student and what they have her do shows how standards of what is newsworthy change. This is not pornographic. This was broadcast on the equivalent of an ABC, CNN etc.

I remember seeing new stories like this when I was there. It’s a trip to hear these stories told with such ‘professionalism.’ The tone is totally ‘documentary’ style.

The Return Of Chavi The Convert

From my live cam chat:

The image “http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1184/1404227186_3ea78ebf28_m.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

YourMoralLeader:  what’s new in your jewish journey chavi? reading anything good?
YourMoralLeader:  saw your new blog posts
Chavi:  Thanks πŸ™‚ Where is ElShaddai, anyhow?
YourMoralLeader:  wherever you invite him in
Chavi:  Ha ha …
Chavi:  Nothing new on the reading. Still trying to get through Constatine’s Sword
YourMoralLeader:  if you had the faith of a mustard seed
Chavi:  Thing’s like trying to read Torah in one sitting
YourMoralLeader:  yeah, i couldn’t make it thru that
Chavi:  You know, they should publish it in volumes
Chavi:  It’d make more sense
YourMoralLeader:  what are you reading these days emma?
Chavi:  For the commuter (like me) it’s just ridiculous
Chavi:  Indeed! Emma, what’s on the bookshelf?
YourMoralLeader:  good door stop
Emma:  Books on horses.. for my course
Emma:  Thats it for now
Chavi:  One of my best friends is a horse lover, owns her own out in Washington state
Emma:  Cool..
Chavi:  Well, not best friend anymore, unfortunately
Chavi:  She’s a little drama-filled
Emma:  I see
Chavi:  How are things where are you Emma?
Chavi:  Weather good?
Emma:  Fine and you?
Emma:  Not bad
Chavi:  Cool, actually. Chilly. Which is weird considering it was nearly 80 a week ago
YourMoralLeader:  do you have your classes for the fall?
Emma:  That is weird
Chavi:  YML — Emma or me?
YourMoralLeader:  chavi
Chavi:  Nada
Chavi:  I actually should figure out how to go about arranging all that …
Chavi:  I’m dealing with health requirements and financial aid stuff, which is obnoxious
Chavi:  Had to get two shots yesterday πŸ™
Chavi:  One in each arm, and today it feels like I have a horrible sunburn on both arms
YourMoralLeader:  oy ve
YourMoralLeader:  did you lose friends/family when you converted? people drift away?
YourMoralLeader:  what do you think, chavi, of jeremiah wright?
Chavi:  People gave me funny looks and I definitely got some "what the heck are you doing?" and "aren’t you a christian?" kind of statements from long-time friends who I don’t speak to that much anymore
Chavi:  Jeremiah Wright is his own man, and though I don’t agree with much that he says, he has a right to his opinion
Chavi:  I just wish he’d back off — he says he’s not hurting the Obama campaign, but that means he’s delusional
YourMoralLeader:  I think you’re going to end up Orthodox, not because it is more true, but because it is practical community, not many observant Conservative jews
Chavi:  I think the same thing about 92 percent of the time
Chavi:  The Conservative movement has the problem of the elite vs. the mass, yes.
Chavi:  I sometimes wonder how Conservative rabbis can be Conservative rabbis
YourMoralLeader:  the more religious you go on the jewish spectrum, the more elitist it becomes
Chavi:  since really they’re mostly Orthodox, just preaching to a Conservative crowd and living without an observant community
Chavi:  Oh I don’t know that that is always true
YourMoralLeader:  Conservativism is elite in theory
YourMoralLeader:  In reform/conservative, anyone can pop off with an opinion on the parsha
YourMoralLeader:  that dont fly in most ortho shuls
Emma:  I’m off
YourMoralLeader:  IMHO, conservative judaism meant well, it just dont work.
Chavi:  True
Emma:  Bye bye xx
YourMoralLeader:  bye
Chavi:  Ta ta Emma
YourMoralLeader:  xoxox
Chavi:  YML — that could be said for Reform as well
User Emma left the room.
YourMoralLeader:  No chavi, I think Reform works practically
Chavi:  Practically in a secular society
Chavi:  Impractical in a Jewish society
YourMoralLeader:  eventually conser will be subsumed by reform
Chavi:  It splits both ways, actually. I think the divide is just about even
Chavi:  The kids who go to the Conservative camp, though I can’t remember the name, usually end up leading the minyans, which are more Orthodox than Conservative
YourMoralLeader:  how do you feel about same sex marriage?
Chavi:  I read a book about the whole movement
Chavi:  It was fascinating
YourMoralLeader:  which book?
Chavi:  Same sex marriage? I say if the GLBT community wants to be as miserable as the rest of the world πŸ˜€ so be it!
Chavi:  I believe it was called The Conservative Movement in Judaism
Chavi:  I blogged about it here:
Chavi:  http://mamaloshen.blogspot.com/2008/03/finally-finished-conservative-movement.html
Chavi:  I hate that I can’t copy paste here!
Chavi:  But it’s interesting how people liken the Conservative movement to the Masorati movement, when they’re not really that alike
QuixoticLass:  how are they not alike?
Chavi:  Because there’s a difference between "Conservative" and "Traditional"
Chavi:  there are Traditional Jews who are not Conservative
Chavi:  Masorti is Traditional, not necessarily Conservative
YourMoralLeader:  chavi, lass was married to a conservative rabbi american
Chavi:  Traditional in practice (and thus theology) is not the same as Conservative, Traditional Jews tend to be more like Conservative Rabbis, in that they adhere more to the mitzvoth
QuixoticLass:  uh…still no definition
QuixoticLass:  and since I lived with a Conservative rabbi, was I more traditional?
Chavi:  You’re asking a Jew to define something Jewish!?
QuixoticLass:  yes
Chavi:  Insanity!
QuixoticLass:  you just said that traditional jews are like conservative jews
Chavi:  No …
Chavi:  There is Traditional and there is Conservative
Chavi:  In the Conservative movement, there is the elite (the rabbis) and the mass (the congregation)
QuixoticLass:  yes the vast majority of lay people in the conservative movement don’t give a flying fig about observance…but this is not "the movement" position
Chavi:  Yah … but if the community of the movement doesn’t represent the movement, then doesn’t the movement take on the facade of its community?
QuixoticLass:  oooo I was elite!
Chavi:  Like YML said, the Conservative mass will likely fade into Reform
Chavi:  Thus, the elite will fade into Traditional or Mod. Orthodox, likely
Chavi:  The Consv. movement is too confused about what it’s trying to be. Those with a good sense usually fall out into Mod. Orthodox or Traditional (where there’s a lot of Orthodox, but egalitarian — so confusing!)

JConnectLA’s Friday Night Dinner Features Special Guest Speaker Eva Braun On “Living Life After The Holocaust”

Click here to see the flyer.

Conventional history depicts Eva Braun as Hitler’s witless girlfriend who committed suicide with him in the bunker in 1945.

JConnectLA has discovered the rest of the story.

Yes, Eva did die with Adolf that despairing Spring day, but she was recently resurrected so she could speak Friday night on "Living Life After The Holocaust."

I don’t want to miss this. Thirty six dollars seems like a small price to pay for this historic moment.

I hope Eva will take questions about resurrection.

I hope she will dress tznious.

Eva Braun with her sister Gretl. I’m not sure if Gretl will be at JConnectLA Friday night.

Why is it that the hottest women usually turn out to be Nazis?

Every Time I Enter A Rabbi’s Office, I Leave It With Less Freedom To Pursue Truth

I’m not complaining.

I think it’s cool.

It means I have to make fewer decisions. I have fewer options.

I’m a drop in the rain, just a number not a name.

And you don’t see it.

You don’t believe it.

At the end of the day, I’m just a needle in the hay.

I signed and sealed it.

Now I gotta deal with it.

Humanity, goodbye!

I’m just a simple Jew. I always do what my rabbis tell me and I always believe everything they say.

Truth has just an instrumental value to me as it does to Judaism (in theory and practice) and to the God of Judaism.

I tell people the truth when it advances my interests and I fudge the truth when it advances my interests.

I’m a lot like God. He’s not particularly interested in the truth either. He tells King David not to do a census. A rational government needs a census but God doesn’t want Israel to be rational or truthful.

Let them live in the fog of war.

To be religious means to value many things higher than truth, particularly fundraising.

As my secular Jewish friend Fred says, "Whoever hears of anyone coming to religion as the result of rational inquiry?"

As I’ve grown in my Torah, I’ve learned that there are a whole slew of subjects I can’t write about.

My world is steadily shrinking. The walls are closing in. That’s the meaning of Torah.

When you become a Christian, your world expands and you reach out to those unlike you. When you become a religious Jew, you abandon meaningful communication with almost everybody outside the fold (except to make money off them).

At one point, truth in public affairs was everything to me. Now I just want to go along to get along. Who needs truth when I can have a warm cozy community?

When you belong to a close-knit community, everything you do reflects on the group. You are all in a boat together on the ocean of life. I can’t drill a hole in my section and tell others to leave me alone.

My ongoing problem is that when I write something that upsets a handful of people in my community, they have an incentive to complain while the hundreds of people who benefit from what I write have no incentive to go to bat for me. They can free-ride on my painful (to me) inquiries.

Here’s a nifty sentence from Wikipedia: "In response to those who stated that Judaism could change or evolve, Rabbi Sofer applied the motto Hadash asur min ha-Torah (??? ???? ?? ?????), "Anything new is forbidden by the Torah," (homelitically based on the Biblical law, in Leviticus 23:14, that new grains are forbidden to be used before Passover, see Yoshon)."

If the holy rabbi had said "Anything true is forbidden by the Torah," he would’ve been just as true to Judaism.

The foundational belief of Judaism is that every word of the Torah is divine. Yet almost everyone who has studied the evidence (those with PhDs in Bible) will tell you the Pentateuch is a post-Mosaic composite source riddled with human errors.

The other foundational belief of Judaism is that God rescued the Israelites from Egypt through the Exodus, yet virtually all who have studied the evidence (PhD in ancient Near East History) say there is no evidence the Israelites were ever in Egypt, that there’s no way that two million of them could have survived in the desert for 40 years, and that all the facts argue that the redemption from Egypt did not occur as the Bible describes it.

Now let me be clear. I do not agree with these scoffers. I have been given the gift of faith and I don’t care about truth. I just want my comfy beliefs and my comfy community.

I think it’s cool that important information in a shul is kept to an elite. The common people can’t handle it.

I endorse this approach.

Sure, you may have trouble getting a quorum every year at the congregational meeting, but if you bribe them with a nice dinner and hector them long enough about their responsibilities, everything will work out.

Now let’s say you throw a meeting where congregants can talk back to the rabbi about his sermons, then you’ll have a hard time finding a room large enough to accommodate the crowd.

Most people find shul boring because they’re outsiders. Only the elite have the hot gossip. If the communication flow at a shul was more robust, more people would participate in shul.

I don’t want that. Best to leave things to the elite. It’s safer.

Best to keep community newspapers focused on safe topics like bake sales and Israeli politics. Don’t cover shuls like other organizations their size. That would tear them apart!

When you write about your shul, please keep things respectable. Write about how the shul helps the goyim and how we keep giving and giving. Only admit to respectable emotions. It’s fine to get fatigued after giving a lot.

Just don’t write anything that could cause waves in the community. Don’t describe disreputable emotions. Keep your prose sanitized. Don’t describe how Judaism is actually practiced.

I want a warm fuzzy hug right now.

XOXOX

Thank you.
