Chico Wang – Former Operator Of Lukeford.com – Committed Suicide Last Year

By Marilyn Dubil for the Gilroy Dispatch:

A porn film director who made headlines in October after he was found dead in a Morgan Hill motel room apparently committed suicide, according to authorities.

Inkyo Volt Hwang, 38, died of acute methadone intoxication and the method of death was listed as suicide, according to the Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office report.

Hwang, who made adult films, was found Sept. 29 in his room at the Economy Inn on Monterey Road after the manager of the motel was unable to get a response from him.

Morgan Hill police officers found his body half-in and half-out of the bed. No one else was in the room or registered to the room, and police officials said his death was not considered suspicious.

Luke Ford, a journalist who until six months ago covered porn and has published an in-depth look at the industry, said Monday he was not surprised at the findings in the coroner’s report.

"This was a man who talked freely and coldly about death, about killing himself and others, so it seems sadly inevitable," he said. "When I interviewed him several years ago, he told me that if I ever told his mother about his working in the porn industry, he would kill me. This is a theme that was ever-present in his life."

More questions revolved around the manner of Hwang’s death than that of his girlfriend, Miriam "Haley" Paige, who Hwang married in Las Vegas in August, according to Clark County, Nev., records and who Hwang is suspected of killing.

Before reaching Morgan Hill, Hwang, who was then accompanied by Paige, was in King City. Police have verified that Hwang is "implicated" in her death, though they will not elaborate. His death, according to Sgt. Steve Miller, did not change that fact. A call to Miller to discover the status of the investigation was not returned by press time.

Ford, who said he "walked away" from writing about the porn industry last October, said unfortunately Hwang’s death is probably largely forgotten among his peers.

"The product is pretty disposable, the people who are making the product usually understand that this is the way it is," he said. "It desensitizes people to each other and to the value of life. That doesn’t mean there aren’t people out there mourning his death, probably more mourning her death, but this is a brutal, desensitizing industry, a meat grinder. It’s not an industry that inculcates tenderness, love and kindness and compassion for others."

According to information from an on-line biography, Hwang was an aspiring attorney before entering the porn industry. He reportedly graduated with honors from UCLA and holds a masters degree from the university.

SmiterOfShvartza:  Ahhh, just the two of us.
SmiterOfShvartza:  I wish you were trustworthy
SmiterOfShvartza:  if you were, I’d compliment you on the attractiveness of Emma
SmiterOfShvartza:  but I am sure you got that photo from a phonesex ad
SmiterOfShvartza:  the interview about chico wang had to be the most awkwardly worded thing ever. The one written by the gilford reposrter
SmiterOfShvartza:  I guess she didn;t have Gram Ponantes number
SmiterOfShvartza:  all right I gotta go. I just dropped in to try to get Emmas number
guest59:  RIP Chico Wang – unless he really did murder his wife
guest8:  beard all itchy?
guest59:  Is it possible for your beard to grow out until it is longer than your petzel?
guest8:  do you have a beard, 59?
guest59:  I shaved it off when I gave up women
guest6:  what is "wrap tefillin"????
guest59:  Well, it is a seldom discussed Jewish practice that involves men and leather goods.
guest6:  i am serious and he isn’t answering any of my questions
guest59:  Not as shameful as having a beauty pageant for camels, as the arabs have
guest59:  I will answer all of your questions
guest8:  i like that beauty pagent idea.
guest6:  and who are you 58? lol
guest59:  http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20080407/od_afp/uaegulffestivalcameloffbeat_080407201354
YourMoralLeader:  welcome
guest8:  i dont know how welcome.
guest59:  What is less moral, spending millions on a camel in a camel beauty pageant, or oggling women in porn?
guest59:  We got rid of Eliot Spitzer for rending a woman for a few thousand, but over there, a camel can go for $2.7 million if she’s pretty enough
guest59:  Not sure if this was a one hump or two gal
guest59:  I hope he got both humps
guest59:  renting a woman, not rending
guest6:  so is this all you do all day?
guest59:  YES
YourMoralLeader:  yes, is that wrong?
guest6:  no i was just asking
guest59:  Blogging is hard work which, as the NY Times has reported, can kill just as mining coal can kill
guest59:  But at least blogging adds no greenhouse gases
YourMoralLeader:  I only make it look easy
guest59:  Bloggers are among the least appreciated people in society.
guest59:  Even prostitutes get their day in the sun
guest59:  We live in an age where a pretty camel fetches 2.7 million, but a blogger goes without health insurance
guest59:  The madness of the era
YourMoralLeader:  crazy
guest59:  Luke needs sponsorship.
guest6:  how old are you moral?
YourMoralLeader:  42
guest59:  Da Vinci had it.
YourMoralLeader:  how about some gaming companies?
QuixoticLass:  I’m WAY too gullible.
QuixoticLass:  and now that you know that, you have a moral responsibility to not fool me.
QuixoticLass:  YML  honestly, sometimes I don’t know whether I’d rather smack you upside the head or give you a hug.
QuixoticLass:  when the rabbi was talking about gossip was he looking directly at you the whole time, or was he able to speak to the whole room?
YourMoralLeader:  whole room
YourMoralLeader:  the irish are really well educated right?
YourMoralLeader:  they saved civilization and all
RussianDragon:  only the women i fear
RussianDragon:  the men are to drunk to remember anything
QuixoticLass:  that peanut butter would go well with my low fat chocolatey cat cookies for people
RevDesmondFord:  sinkers or floaters today, boy?
YourMoralLeader:  Hi dad
YourMoralLeader:  sinkers I am afraid.
YourMoralLeader:  Is that a sin?
RevDesmondFord:  You are fair-dinkum sinker, son…and no one should suffer a whelp like you. I knew from the start when you were suckling on sugar-teats and peppermint sticks that you were no good. What do you do with a sinker? Here in Oz, we pull the handle and flush.
QuixoticLass:  YML are you going to sell your chametz?
YourMoralLeader:  I won’t have any chametz. Tossing it all or giving it to Rev. Des.
QuixoticLass:  you should sell it just in case…to cover the crumbs and stuff you miss.
QuixoticLass:  stuff in your books…
QuixoticLass:  pockets…
YourMoralLeader:  all this legalism, complicated religion.
QuixoticLass:  you don’t like the ritual and all the little rules?
YourMoralLeader:  i get sick of it
QuixoticLass:  you wear tzit tzit
YourMoralLeader:  I don’t believe in selling off your chametz to a non-jew unless you’re a major store-owner or something
YourMoralLeader:  I get rid of my spiritual chametz by studying Torah

put that bag on your head luke
RussianDragon:  love bites

RussianDragon:  for salvation
QuixoticLass:  will a shidduch be made in this chat room?
cuntpunt:  I pray for a white russian to drink up and pass out on

Lilithena:  These images disturb me.
Lilithena:  I am going to have dreams about them
Lilithena:  I’ve seen animals do this in jungle parks
QuixoticLass:  I’m only a stripper for a audience of one.
YourMoralLeader:  and he has to be a rabbi
QuixoticLass:  I don’t strip for rabbis anymore
Lilithena:  Were they poor tippers?
QuixoticLass:  hahaha
ElazarMuskin:  Luke I came by Saturday at 7:45 but you didn’t come out
YourMoralLeader:  I’m sorry, I was napping.
ElazarMuskin:  I assumed you’d had misgivings
ElazarMuskin:  And so today…we’re making a mockery of the tefillin?
Lilithena:  A gay man who is forced to grow his own beard because he does not know any women who will occupy that role for him
YourMoralLeader:  No mockery rabbi.
YourMoralLeader:  Just explaining the holiness of them.
Lilithena:  Rabbi, do you folks keep tabs on Luke?
cuntpunt:  For the past twenty-one years, Rabbi Elazar Muskin has served as the Rabbi of the Young Israel of Century City in Los Angeles, California.
Lilithena:  Maybe that’s why the cam exists, to enable you to check in on Luke 24/7
ElazarMuskin:  We hear things
Lilithena:  gossip is not good
cuntpunt:  gossip is sinful
QuixoticLass:  gossip gets your gullible friends in trouble
cuntpunt:  gossip is the root of evil
YourMoralLeader:  Everything I do, everyone I do, it’s a sin.
QuixoticLass:   oh ho
RussianDragon:  ok i’m back
ElazarMuskin:  Gossip only becomes a sin when one believes it
YourMoralLeader:  Got any scoop, rabbi?
QuixoticLass:  great put the burden on the gullible friend
cuntpunt:  we wrapped tefillin today rabbi
ElazarMuskin:  No scoop today
YourMoralLeader:  Rabbi, which shul in the neighborhood is the most anal in its megillah reading? YICC?
RussianDragon:  hi rabbi
ElazarMuskin:  So I read, c****punt
ElazarMuskin:  Anal? What is this term?
YourMoralLeader:  Do you think you can get Avrohom Union in here?
cuntpunt:  of the bottom end?
Lilithena:  Rabbi, why won’t Jewish men commit to Jewish women in a timely manner?
ElazarMuskin:  how does this term apply to reading of the megillah?
RussianDragon:  it’s  a sin
YourMoralLeader:  Rabbi, why do so many wives in your shul not cover their hair during the week and wear pants?
QuixoticLass:  Jewish men don’t like Jewish women because we are overeducated and demanding.
QuixoticLass:  also many Jewish women mistakenly think that it’s ok to wait until after they are 30 to start looking for a husband
ElazarMuskin:  Luke- why do you shake hands upon meeting women?
ElazarMuskin:  you know this is sinful
QuixoticLass:  do you shake women’s hands?
RussianDragon:  he doesnt know the difference
QuixoticLass:  you never shook mine.
RussianDragon:  some look like men
YourMoralLeader:  I try not to, rabbi.
QuixoticLass:  we pass the keys back and forth as though you are shomer negiah
YourMoralLeader:  Rabbi, what do you think of the RCC?
YourMoralLeader:  And who do you think will succeed Rabbi Weil at BJ?
ElazarMuskin:  I think more of your new plan to take matters into your own hands
Lilithena:  Too much unholy gossip!
ElazarMuskin:  as if our people havent suffered enough
YourMoralLeader:  Thank you rabbi.
YourMoralLeader:  Would you serve on my kangaroo court?

RussianDragon:  suite sixteen
YourMoralLeader:  any celebs come into your shul lately, rabbi?
RussianDragon:  i’ve been there
YourMoralSchvartze:  A: Reservations.
YourMoralLeader:  Rabbi Muskin, I’d like you to marry Emma and I.
ElazarMuskin:  Dennis Hopper attended recently
Lilithena:  What’s the best shul for getting ahead?
YourMoralLeader:  Can we do this in chat?
ElazarMuskin:  hmmm, let me consult torah
ElazarMuskin:  um- nope
RussianDragon:  good rabbi
Lilithena:  I can do conversions online, Emma.  Want one?
YourMoralSchvartze:  What’s the difference between karate and judo…Karate is a form of self-defense and judo is what bagels are made of.
YourMoralLeader:  What was it like learning from The Rav, rabbi?
ElazarMuskin:  hahaha judo
Lilithena:  Kraft is starting to market a bagel that comes prefilled with "cream cheese"  It looks just like a twinkie
ElazarMuskin:  Watch out Luke you are stepping on the funny man’s toes
YourMoralLeader:  Rabbi, why did you banish the kiddush club?
ElazarMuskin:  Rave reviews for the Rav
YourMoralSchvartze:  What do you say when you tickle a Jewish woman? Gucci, Gucci, goo.
Lilithena:  For $50 I will convert you to or from any faith

Israel Shahak

Anthony writes:

Dear Mr Ford:

Having recently recently your interesting article on Israel Shahak (and having been alerted to your work by E. Michael Jones) I am writing, on the offchance, to ask if you can help me with a problem.

I am considering writing a piece on the late Dr. Shahak with specific reference to the incident you discuss and which he used to recount (the piece may also examine certain claims made against him).

As you know, the opening of his work Jewish History, Jewish Religion contains Shahak’s recollection of the events of 1965-1966 when he witnessed an "ultra-religious" Jew refuse to call an ambulance on the Sabbath that would have aided a Gentile.

Shahak recounted the experience to Haaretz, and Maariv took up the story also. Shahak stated that: " I asked for a meeting which is composed of rabbis nominated by the State of Israel. I asked them whether such behavior was consistent with their interpretation of the Jewish religion. They answered that the Jew in question had behaved correctly, indeed piously, and backed their statement by referring me to a passage in an authoritative compendium of Talmudic laws, written in this century….Neither the Israeli, nor the diaspora, rabbinical authorities ever reversed their ruling that a Jew should not violate the Sabbath in order to save the life of a Gentile. They added much sanctimonious twaddle to the effect that if the consequence of such an act puts Jews in danger, the violation of the Sabbath is permitted, for their sake."

This statement (the validity of which is not doubted by Tom Segev in his recent book 1967) has been continuously derided by opponents of Dr Shahak. The following claims are repeatedly made (and are all over the internet) – a) Dr Shahak fabricated the whole incident b) he was never able to identify the "ultra-religious" Jew he referred to c) no rabbinic court (or meeting with rabbis composed by the State of Israel) ever answered Shahak’s question in the way he said that they had.

I present here a link to an article by the late Lord Jacobivitz, Jewish Medical Ethicist and Chief Rabbi of England: A Modern Blood Libel – L’Affaire Shahak http://www.edah.org/backend/document/jakobovits1.html

You refer to this article on your blog – but as far as I can see it is in no way an "interview" with Shahak – more an article containing an assertion that Shahak admitted to lying (to whom he admitted this we do not know).

The above article is continually cited by opponents of Dr. Shahak as the final word on the matter – and as a reason to dismiss his work as fraudulent. I have yet to see a single rebuttal.

I have never been able to get to the bottom of this dispute, not least because Dr. Shahak is no longer with us. I am writing to you to ask if you can shed any more light at all on this distressing episode. I would very much like to produce an article on the matter (I am a medical ethicist by training) in the hope of producing the final word on this matter Dr. Shahak’s name. If you could in any way assist me in this matter I would be most grateful to you.

Was There A Nazi Theme In Grand Prix Boss’s Orgy?

If so, is that a more serious sin than the orgy with five women?

What would the Torah say?

What would Jesus do?

What does this mean for the Jews?

John Burns reports:

LONDON — Few scandals in recent years have provoked as much anger and dismay across Europe as the saga of Max Mosley, the overseer of grand prix motor racing who made tabloid news last weekend in a front-page exposé and accompanying Web video showing him in a sadomasochistic orgy with five supposed prostitutes in a London sex “dungeon.”

But beyond the licentiousness of the episode, it was the suggestion of Nazi undertones in the role-playing during the session in a basement in London’s fashionable Chelsea district that led to demands for Mr. Mosley’s resignation as president of the Paris-based Federation Internationale de l’Automobile. Known as the F.I.A., it is the international governing body of motor sports, and has presided over the expansion of Formula One racing into one of the world’s richest sports.

Family history has added to the notoriety: Mr. Mosley, 67, is the younger son of Britain’s 1930s fascist leader, Sir Oswald Mosley, and the society beauty Diana Mitford, whose secret wedding in Berlin in October 1936 was held at the home of the Nazi propaganda chief Joseph Goebbels and included Hitler as a guest of honor.

The tabloid newspaper that broke the story of Mr. Mosley’s Chelsea session, The News of the World, described it as “a depraved Nazi sadomasochistic orgy,” and said Mr. Mosley had paid the equivalent of $5,000 in cash for the five-hour session.

In a video the paper posted on the Internet but later removed, two of the women wore black-and-white striped robes in the style of prisoners’ uniforms. The video showed Mr. Mosley counting in German — “Eins! Zwei! Drei! Vier! Funf!” — as he used a leather strap to lash one of the women.

“She needs more of ze punishment!” he cried in German-accented English. One woman appeared to search his hair for lice while another called off items on an inspection list. Mr. Mosley, naked, was bound face-down and lashed more than 20 times.

Mr. Mosley has acknowledged participating in the session. But he has denied that the role-playing had a Nazi motif, and announced Friday that he had filed a lawsuit against the newspaper, claiming “unlimited damages” for invasion of privacy.

In a letter on Saturday to the head of Germany’s motoring federation, he renewed his insistence that the Chelsea session was a private matter, and added, in a reference to the F.I.A.’s role in promoting road safety around the world: “Had I been caught driving excessively fast on a public road or over the alcohol limit, I would have resigned the same day. As it is, the scandal paper obtained by illegal means pictures of something I did in private, which, although unacceptable to some people, was harmless and completely legal.”

He has refused to resign his F.I.A. post, appealing to the federation’s global network of motoring organizations for support. But denunciations have cascaded from much of the racing world, from Jewish groups, and from F.I.A.-affiliated motoring organizations around the world, including the American Automobile Association, which said in a statement on Saturday that Mr. Mosley, as F.I.A. chief, needed to set “the highest standards of ethical behavior” if he was to represent millions of motorists worldwide. It added: “It would be in the best interest of all concerned if he were to step down.”

Perhaps more significantly, calls for his resignation have come from four major car companies, each of which owns or substantially controls grand prix racing teams: BMW, Daimler Benz, Honda and Toyota.

For the world of Formula One, which attracts a global audience of tens of millions of television viewers, the scandal has come at a bad time. It is still reeling from the enmities sown last year when Mr. Mosley, as the F.I.A. chief, served as chief prosecutor in the so-called “spygate” affair in which nearly 800 pages of secret technical data were stolen from the Italian Ferrari team and handed to its chief racetrack rivals, the British McLaren team.

Investigating Sex Research

The New York Times reports:

BONK

The Curious Coupling of Science and Sex

By Mary Roach

Illustrated. 319 pp. W.W. Norton & Company. $24.95.

‘Bonk,’ by Mary Roach: Sexual Advances (March 30, 2008)

Janet Maslin writes:

Readers of Mary Roach’s first two books know what “Bonk” means. It means that the author of “Stiff” and “Spook” has plastered another snappy, one-word title onto another of her fluffy, facile and by now formulaic surveys of science-related exotica. This time erotica is also a factor, since Ms. Roach’s new subject is sex research. In order to give “Bonk” a first-person chumminess, the writer moonlights as her own favorite guinea pig.

“I’ve been tripping over the cringe factor all year,” Ms. Roach writes in the introductory chapter that she calls “Foreplay.” No wonder: the cringe factor is everywhere. Whether Ms. Roach is measuring her own genitalia for one doctor’s study (“It is interesting,” he writes to her, “that you could reach this stage of life and not really have any call to know how the parts line up”) or interviewing skilled Danish pig inseminators, she continues to ask herself whether she’s making her readers queasy. It seems an utterly rhetorical question.

When she jokingly envisions a moment of voyeurism “because that’s the kind of sicko I am,” she is not really describing her own proclivities. She’s describing her way of writing. Sounding like a sicko is important to “Bonk.” Sounding like a coy, winsome sicko is even more so.

That approach enables Ms. Roach to describe, say, the spurting of vaginal fluids in a tone of clinical interest, then shrug off the subject with a wisecrack. “I do so hope they wore lab glasses,” she writes about the sex researchers who conducted that particular investigation.

It’s odd that “Bonk” arouses less morbid interest than Ms. Roach did with her earlier books about the dead and the supernatural. Granted, morbidity was a basic part of those books’ reporting. But a comparably unhealthy curiosity ought to be prompted by some of the bizarre anatomical minutiae that is cataloged here. Certainly that formula works for circus sideshows, with which “Bonk” has too many interests in common. The penile mishaps (one involving a bristled toothbrush), severings (one involves hungry ducks) and surgeries cited by Ms. Roach are nothing if not memorable, but her book consistently undermines its own discoveries. So “Bonk” uneasily mixes revulsion with “those rare, shining moments when urology approaches high comedy.”

“If you hurl an uprooted penis into the air, it will not come back to you,” she writes, invoking the boomerang as an anatomical model. “It will most likely, and who can blame it, want nothing to do with you.” By the same jokey reasoning the existence of vaginal “floors, vestibules, platforms, barrels and outlets” cited in the research of Masters and Johnson prompts Ms. Roach to reach for levity by asking, “Are people having sex, or are they just visiting Crate and Barrel?” At her most flippant Ms. Roach maintains that “like tenors, there are three well-known vaginal fistulas.” After comparing one of these to Pavarotti, she pronounces them “nothing to sing about.”

Even the more serious parts of “Bonk” are aerated by authorial stunts. Most notably, in investigating exactly how researchers study coital imaging, she volunteers to enter an M.R.I. machine with her husband, Ed, and join what she describes here as “the 20-Inch High Club.” As part of this process, “we must hold still for several seconds, like Victorians posing for a tintype, only not like Victorians posing for a tintype.”

What emerges from this experience? One party-perfect anecdote and not much interesting information.

The same frivolousness persists, even about subjects on which few readers really seek enlightenment: genital transplants, orgasmic corpses, furtive sexuality in Egypt and the bizarre business of fertility treatment. Ms. Roach devotes all of two paragraphs to the fabulously strange career of Dr. John R. Brinkley (whose exploits are the subject of a much more entertaining new book devoted to sexual eccentricities, “Charlatan,” by Pope Brock).

RCC Divorces

Gadi Pickholz from the Israel Fathers Rights Advocacy Council writes:

We will have a full statement and formal report published before Pesach, Gd willing, but IFRAC can confirm that the statement at the bottom of the RCC website claiming that their Get is accepted by the Rabbanut Bet DIn is not only false, but has been for a considerable period of time. They simply have not disclosed to anyone in LA that the Rabbanut has NOT been accepting their Get, and quietly rewriting new ones after the fact. The RCC is not alone among American rabbis whom the Rabbanut has serious qualms about their practices halachically, but almost everyone else has quietly removed so bold a misrepresentation from their websites until negotiations with the Rabbanut are concluded.

We cannot identify a single case of an RCC written or managed Get that did not require full rewrite when presented in Jerusalem for a number of years back. The most chilling aspect of this revelation is the recognition of near total control of information and news flow by the RCC and its member Rabbis within the local community. To our knowledge, no one has known about this except the poor saps of divorced men who suddenly are served arrest warrants on the streets of Israel long after they believed they were fully divorced with Get back in America.

This is only coming out now due to the wholesale review of all procedures of the American rabbinate by the Rabbanut, including marriage, conversion, kashrut and divorce.

As I mentioned a month ago, the issue goes far beyond conversion and their marriage ceremonies. There is a fundamental concern with the most basic practices of some bet din and vaadot in America, and none are in the crosshairs more than the RCC. It is a classic case of a self regulatory organization with a monopoly getting both sloppy and developing an attitude. Any lawyer, doctor or accountant comprehends the inevitable outcome from past experiences of the ABA, AMA and Wall Street. Indeed, the best thing that ever happened for the RCA was YCT, as it effectively forced a new generation into leadership and sent the entire organization back to the halachic gym to get into shape. The RCC has no such nascent competitor, and simply grew uncontrollable and greedy.

YU’s Rosh Yeshiva Jokes About Shooting Israel’s Prime Minister If He Withdraws From Jerusalem

Nat Barnat writes on Jewschool:

Rabbi Schachter PhotoLast Wednesday, Rabbi Herschel Schachter, a Rosh Yeshiva at YU, was giving a class to young Americans at Yeshivat HaKotel in Jerusalem. At some point, the class was opened up to questions, and in response to a question regarding service in the army, he said that your decision to serve in the army should be based on what the army was doing. Well, that’s not so bad. Yes, doubting the army is taboo in Israel, but I’m alright with that. Here’s the kicker. He went on to say, “If the army is going to give away Yerushalayim [Jerusalem] then I would tell everyone to resign from the army – I’d tell them to shoot the rosh hamemshala [prime minister].”

Yes, yes, yes, that’s what he said. Unfortunately, the YouTube video of this unfortunate quote was removed, but the Jewish Week wrote down a transcript. That’s called incitement folks, it’s bad. Here in Israel, we’ve already had one prime minister murdered after Rabbis couldn’t keep their mouths shut, and apparently this Rabbi thinks the world would be better if it were to happen again.

In all fairness, I should also report the apology that Rabbi Schachter issued recently,

Statements I made informally have been publicly excerpted this week. I deeply regret such statements and apologize for them. They were uttered spontaneously, off the cuff, and were not meant seriously. And they do not, God forbid, represent my views. Jewish law demands respect for representatives of the Jewish government and the State of Israel.

OK. It’s something of an apology. However, it seems difficult to accept. Rabbi Schachter apologized for speaking off the cuff and for not respecting representatives of the Jewish government. Where’s the concern for human life? Where is the apology for saying the same things that have already resulted in one murder? Rabbi Schachter is an important public figure and a rabbinic leader. His words are received hungrily by thousands of students, and even among other Rabbis he calls the shots. He is the halakhic decisor for the Orthodox Union and for dozens of rabbis across the country. The Mishna (Avot 1:11) tells us, “Sages, be careful with you words!” We know in our own recent history how important a principle that is. Rabbi Schachter needs to know it too.

Gary Rosenblatt writes in The Jewish Week:

Several prominent Orthodox rabbinical leaders this week chose not to speak for the record of their deep disappointment over Rabbi Schachter’s remarks, which one said seemed to delegitimize the Israeli government.
But Rabbi Saul Berman, a longtime associate professor of Jewish studies at YU’s Stern College for Women, called for disciplinary action against Rabbi Schachter.
He told The Jewish Week that “if Rabbi Schachter understood the import of his besmirching the reputation of Yeshiva University and his once again raising the question of whether the Orthodox community is loyal to the State of Israel or only to its own understanding of what God wants, he would resign — or at least take a leave of absence to do penance someplace.”
Rabbi Berman, who is also director of continuing rabbinic education at Yeshiva Chovevei Torah, said Rabbi Schachter has every right to express his views “but not necessarily to manipulate the minds of adolescents.” He said the president and board of Yeshiva “should be the ones to take action” and determine if the university is “fulfilling its responsibility to its students.”
Rabbi Berman added that “we have an unfortunate history of not holding people accountable for their words, and seeing the consequences.”
He noted that this incident follows the Rabbinical Council of America’s choice of Rabbi Schachter as one of three American rabbis to oversee the conversion process in the U.S., with the approval of the Israeli Chief Rabbinate.
Rabbi Basil Herring, executive director of the RCA, described Rabbi Schachter recently as “representative of where Modern Orthodoxy is today.”
Rabbi Herring said this week that “the RCA, as all Jews who abide by Torah law, rejects the suggestion, even in jest, of committing harm to the prime minister of Israel.” But he also noted that “as far as the RCA is concerned, nothing has changed” regarding Rabbi Schachter’s status.
That’s the problem, according to Rabbi Brad Hirschfield, president of CLAL, the National Jewish Center for Learning and Leadership, who said that after the murder of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzchak Rabin, “we’ve passed the point of no return,” noting that “we’ve seen people invoke Torah to justify murder. It’s not a theoretical issue anymore.”
He recalled being an 18-year-old devotee of Rabbi Moshe Levinger, a fiery right-wing rabbi in Hebron and empathized with yeshiva students who love and defend their rabbi. But he said that Rabbi Schachter’s apology “was no apology — he can’t just say he didn’t mean it.”
Rabbi Hirschfield called on Rabbi Schachter’s followers to invoke the ethic of rebuke, out of love. Otherwise, he warned, “when personal allegiance trumps ethical awareness, your rebbe becomes your idol.”
Rabbi Schachter has been known to make blunt, politically incorrect statements in the past. In 2004, his remarks seemed to compare women to animals in expounding on the issue of whether women can read from a ketubah at a marriage ceremony. Technically yes, he said, adding that the marriage would be valid “even if a parrot or a monkey would read the ketubah.”
Prior to that incident, the rabbi described Jews as superior to other people, noting that Jews and non-Jews “have different genes, DNA and instincts.”
In 1995, Rabbi Schachter accused the Rabin government of committing “national suicide,” and of hating God and the Torah.
His defenders say he is naïve, not mean-spirited, in part because he has little dealing with the community at large, cloistered within the study halls of Yeshiva. They say he speaks casually in class, unaware of the larger ramifications of his remarks.
Critics agree, but note that such a person, despite his brilliance, should not be in a position of prominence.
Rabbi Berman asserted this week that it is “duplicitous” for Rabbi Schachter’s defenders to say he is more comfortable in the beit midrash and doesn’t fully understand the community and yet seek him out to make vital public policy decisions on sensitive communal issues like conversion.
“If you assume communal responsibility,” he said, “you have to be responsible for yourself.”

Rabbi linked to systematic child abuse flees to Canada

By Uri Blau, Yair Ettinger, Jonathan Lis and Ofra Edelman for Haaretz:

Rabbi Elior Chen, the spiritual authority behind a group accused of systematically abusing children in a Jerusalem family, has fled to Canada with one of his supporters, Haaretz has learned.

Chen is supposed to meet the other members of the group in Canada, where the family of one of the members lives, according to a friend of Chen’s who is familiar with the group but doesn’t belong to it. The friend said Chen fled with Joseph Fisher, whose name was not mentioned in an indictment filed yesterday against the mother of the children suspected of being abused by Chen’s followers. The remand of the mother was extended Sunday until April 14.

Jerusalem police and the state prosecutor’s office are considering the possibility of issuing an international warrant for Chen’s arrest. During a search of his home Thursday, police found evidence that appears to link the rabbi to the abuse, including journals that document the violence.

Two of the family’s eight children, aged 4 and 5, were hospitalized in serious condition two weeks ago, after Chen allegedly ordered two of his followers to discipline the children by beating, burning, pushing and shaking them, and tying them up as a way of "correcting" their behavior. The 4-year-old is still hospitalized and is in a vegetative state. Police suspect that Chen’s supporters also doused the children in hot and cold water and broke their bones with hammers and blows. The mother was charged with forcing the children to eat feces, beating them unconscious and locking them up in a suitcase for three days.

Jerusalem police also arrested an additional suspect in the case, and have issued a gag order regarding his identity. The Magistrate’s Court extended his remand by five days.

Chen and three of his supporters allegedly began providing the family with "educational lessons" several months ago. They allegedly kicked the father out of his home and began abusing several of the family’s eight children, especially the two youngest.

Chen and Fisher left the country legally, and their exit was registered at border control. Afterward, their wives and children went into hiding. The Fisher apartment has been cleared out and its contents have been placed in storage.

Police said they do not know the location of Chen’s and Fisher’s families, but Chen’s friend said they were hoping to go to Canada as well and may have already left the country.

Chen and his supporters chose Canada in part, the source said, because "the extradition law is tough" there. "Only in very exceptional cases does Canada extradite," he said.

Elior Chen’s father, Yaakov Chen, told Haaretz he did not know where his son or his son’s family was hiding. "I didn’t see him, I don’t know where he is," he said. "The last time I saw him was three weeks ago, after he had a girl. I went to his home in Upper Betar, gave him a present and that’s it. I haven’t seen him since. I’m sitting at home and eating my heart out."
