JJ’s Dikla Kadosh Lays Down The Smack

From The Calendar Girls:

I hate to bash my own people, but I have been quite disconcerted by Israeli women in the media limelight recently.

Bar Refaeli, who was the subject of several blog posts over the past few months, is an arrogant air head with no sense of loyalty to her country and a personality that’s as bland as she is beautiful.

Quoting from the Sports Illustrated Q&A: Refaeli’s favorite thing to do on a rainy day: "stay in bed and watch movies." If she had nothing important to do tomorrow, she would "go to bed, watch some TV and sleep." If she had $10 to spend right now, she would "go to the movies."

How dull can you be?

Then there’s Ninette Tayeb, Israel’s reigning diva. Tayeb won Israel’s version of American Idol in 2003 and has become one of the most beloved celebrities in the country. She is the headliner for the Israeli Consulate’s "Live For Sderot" Feb. 26 concert, which raises funds for the children of the rocket-riddled town near the Gaza Strip and kicks off the Israel at 60 celebrations in Los Angeles.

I wrote a Jewish Journal article about the concert, which is also Tayeb’s U.S. debut, but could not get an interview with the pop icon.

I had to submit my questions, via the Israeli Consulate, to her PR people for approval, who were then supposed to set up a phone interview. Days went by and I heard nothing from Tayeb’s camp. Then at the last minute, a day after my deadline, I got word from the Consulate that Tayeb was sick and was "saving her voice for the concert."

She managed, in the throes of her illness, to answer two of the six questions I asked, neither one of which was a riveting response worthy of a smart, successful Israeli superstar who is looking to make an impression on a discerning L.A. audience.

Last, and certainly the most disappointing of the Israeli women I’ve recently come across is "hip hop violinist" Miri Ben-Ari, who we’ve blogged about in the past in glowing terms. A stunning performer, she surprised me with her brusque manner in a phone interview about the "Live For Sderot" concert, at which she will be performing the opening song.

"I really don’t have time for this," she said as soon as her publicist connected us. "This interview was not part of my schedule today." Nice to talk to you too, Miri.

San Francisco Getting An Eruv

An eruv, usually a thin wire placed around a community, allows observant Jews to carry on the Sabbath and other Jewish holy days.

All of San Francisco’s important Orthodox rabbis have come together to construct an eruv in the city.

The old guard feuding rabbis in town have retired.

Even help from Conservative synagogues may be welcomed (this was shunned the LAEruv.com RCC-led right-wing Orthodox crowd).

Susan Sarandon Masturbated To For Old Time’s Sake

ATHENS, GA—Though David Unger’s onanistic ritual has changed much over the past three decades, the 39-year-old copy editor told reporters Monday that he was "thrilled" to reconnect with someone he hadn’t used as masturbatory fodder in years: Academy Award–winning actress and perennial sex symbol Susan Sarandon.

"It was great to fantasize about Susan again," said Unger, who had not fantasized about Sarandon since 1994, when she played a tough-but-sultry lawyer in The Client. "It just felt natural and right. Almost like I never stopped in the first place."

…Although Unger is ultimately glad he is once again masturbating to Sarandon after such a long hiatus, he admitted that he was left with some difficult questions about the years he spent manipulating his genitalia to thoughts of younger, flashier subjects, among them Jennifer Aniston, Lucy Liu, and, more recently, coworker Janine Carver.

"Reuniting with Susan made it hard not to think that fantasizing about all those other women was a waste of time," Unger said. "Sure, I had my fun with Alias and Kelly Clarkson’s second album cover, but I have to wonder if I was just kidding myself. Then again, without the time apart from Susan, would the reunion have been as sweet? It’s hard to say."

HOLLYWOOD, CA. Los Angeles Daily News Editor, Ron Kaye, former KCBS political editor, Linda Breakstone, Los Angeles Times’ “Top of the Ticket” editor, Don Frederick, and Santa Monica City Councilmember, Bobby Shriver, will join moderator and show business historian, Alex Ben Block, and a distinguished gathering of Her Ex alumni next week to discuss the paper’s lasting influence.  It is affectionately being called “A Return to Corky’s: The Ultimate Herald Examiner Almost-20th Reunion Party.”

For that evening, the Steve Allen Theater on Hollywood Boulevard will take the place of Corky’s, the notorious newspaper bar that was across the street from the Herald Examiner’s Spanish Mission-style building in downtown L.A. for many years—and served as the main watering hole and refuge for much of the staff.

"We’re going to celebrate not only a great newspaper, but a great newspaper bar," says Chris Woodyard of USA Today, who is President of the L.A. Press Club and a former Her Ex reporter. "Both are important pieces of Los Angeles history."

There will be a spirited panel discussion moderated by Block, who is an author, columnist, broadcaster and show business historian. He is former editor of The Hollywood Reporter and TelevisionWeek and an Associate Editor of Forbes, who now writes a column for Hollywood Today (HollywoodToday.net)

“This is a way to recall when L.A. had a second metropolitan newspaper, with a much brasher, bolder attitude, that once was the largest afternoon paper in the country,” says Block. “The Her Ex’s brash style in many ways better reflects the way news is delivered in the cyber world than more conservative old line papers, and so the lively spirit of the paper has lived on.”

Legendary former Her Ex editor James G. “Jim” Bellows is expected to try and attend but is in fragile health, and his participation will depend on his condition at that time. The entire event is dedicated to him, and he will be honored during the program.

It has been 19 years since the Los Angeles Herald Examiner last rolled its presses, ending a Southern California newspaper publishing legacy that dated back to 1871. Since then, former Herald Examiner editorial employees have gone on to top positions at the L.A. Times, the Daily News, television, radio, online and many other places, some now serving in the government they once covered. Now the Her Ex alumni are gathering from around the state, around the country and around the world and all over Southern California.

During the event, there will be an original multi-media presentation featuring historic pictures from the Los Angeles Public Library Collection of Herald Examiner Photos. Many of the images by Herald photographers over the years were donated to the library 19 years ago but have not been seen since. One goal of the evening will be to encourage the preservation of the more than 70,000 photos from the Herald photo collection, and to see funding provided to digitalize them for posterity, according to Block and Woodyard.

The panelists include:

·          Ron Kaye, who since August 2005 has been Editor of The Daily News of Los Angeles, after serving as managing editor since 1993. Besides the Her Ex, he has been a reporter and editor at the Associated Press, Newsweek and the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

·         Linda Breakstone, who after the Her Ex, was Political Editor of KCBS-TV for eleven years, and before that on air at KABC-TV for five years.

·         Don Frederick, who joined the Los Angeles Times in 1989 after the Her Ex folded and has worked in their Washington bureau since 1996, covering everything from the impeachment of President Clinton to 9/11, as well as all of the presidential campaigns. He currently writes for the Top of The Ticket political blog, one of the Times most heavily trafficked web attractions.

·         Robert Sargent "Bobby" Shriver III, who is an attorney and  City Councilmember in Santa Monica, California,  as well as President of an entertainment and philanthropic company. A member of the Kennedy family, Bobby Shriver was hired by Bellows to work at the Her Ex early in his career.

Along with the panelists, distinguished members of the audience will reminisce and discuss the lasting imprint of one of the city’s most colorful newspapers at a time that all newspapers are under the microscope, during a time of change for the media.

The Her Ex Reunion Party on March 13th takes place at the Steve Allen Theater, in a complex that is home to The Los Angeles Press Club. It is located at 4773 Hollywood Blvd, Los Angeles , CA 90027 (two blocks west of Vermont Ave ). There is free parking behind the building (enter off of Berendo Street); Metro: Red line, Sunset/Vermont station.

The evening begins with a reception and networking starting at 6 p.m.; The tribute to Jim Bellows and program begin at 7:30 p.m.; A Her Ex Reunion Group photo and video immediately following the program. The Spirit of Corky’s bar will remain open until 11 pm. but mercifully there will be no karaoke.

Admission is $20 at the door and $10 if the tickets are purchased in advance. Admission is free for  LA Press Club members and anyone who joins the LAPC that night. Ticket buyers can reserve seats using PayPal in advance online or on the phone (non refundable $5 charge applied to admission).  RSVP to: [email protected]  or call 323.669.8081.

New Edition From Yeshiva University’s Newspaper

Rabbi Gil Student writes:

Fascinating articles in a new issue of Kol Hamevaser (link):

As mentioned in an earlier post, the RCA recently reached an agreement with the Israeli Rabbinate to create a network of rabbinical courts for conversion that will be automatically accepted by the Israeli Rabbinate (link). This is, in my opinion, an excellent development. There had been pressure put on the Israeli Rabbinate to reject conversions by Modern Orthodox rabbis, by using measures such as belief in an ancient universe to disqualify rabbis and their conversions (see these posts – I, II). However, especially given the RCA’s stance on these issues (link), I have been assured that this is not going to be the case. Note also that the EJF, the Charedi group that has tried to place itself at the lead of international conversion standards, does not factor into this agreement at all. Additionally, this agreement will not stop individual rabbis from performing conversions on their own and having the Israeli Rabbinate, if relevant, evaluate the convert’s status on a case-by-case basis.

For a detailed document of the RCA’s processes for conversion, see this document: link (PDF)

Can Seth Rogen’s ‘Porno’ Sell Tickets?

I fear that we are defining deviancy down at a time when we should be raising moral standards, not lowering them.

That’s why I’m running my live cam (maybe that’s why I’m all alone on my cam now, my insights are too profound to be appreciated by the masses, oh why must I suffer for the world’s sins) – to heighten moral awareness and to stimulate soul examination and to sensitize our ethical fibers (unmixed linen and wool) so that they vibrate with outrage at this pure filth being passed off as art.

Any time you have a penis entering a vagina, that’s not art.

From the USA Today:

MONROEVILLE, Pa. (March. 5) – It sounds like the most dangerous title in movies — "Zack & Miri Make a Porno" — but in comedy these days, the riskier the better.

Kevin Smith’s film, now shooting in western Pennsylvania, stars Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks as broke friends who embrace their desperation by making their own X-rated tape to pay off their debts. In the process, they uncover romantic feelings for each other.

Smith readily acknowledges that having "porno" in the title could turn off some potential viewers.

"We’re just hoping that by the time the movie comes out, if the marketing people do their jobs right, it’s a word that people will kind of get over," he says.

This is the era in which the nation just spent weeks chattering about Sarah Silverman and Jimmy Kimmel’s dueling videos about having sex with Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. (Banks released her own spoof video about Rogen.) And R-rated films such as Knocked Up (co-starring Rogen), "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" (co-starring Banks and Rogen) and Superbad are major comedy hits.

…Those behind the film point out that it’s more than just a filthy movie (though it’s plenty filthy).

"What’s weird about it is, it’s dirty. But it’s so incredibly sweet," Smith says, noting that "Porno" will be rated R (obviously, there’s no actual porn in it). Banks says grown-ups are mature enough for immature jokes. "These kinds of comedies, these sweet and sexy comedies, have all started to push the envelope. This movie takes it even further, that’s definitely true. But if you’re over 15 years old … you know what sex is, and in comedy you’re always trying to find those taboos that you can break for a laugh. Sex in America is a huge one."

Yeah, well, the people who made Auschwitz also thought they were making a sweet and sexy comedy. It’s a thin line between homemade porn and creamatoria.

High On Mount Sinai?

JERUSALEM (Reuters) – The biblical Israelites may have been high on a hallucinogenic plant when Moses brought the Ten Writing in the British journal Time and Mind, Benny Shanon of Jerusalem’s Hebrew University said two plants in the Sinai desert contain the same psychoactive molecules as those found in plants from which the powerful Amazonian hallucinogenic brew ayahuasca is prepared.

The thunder, lightning and blaring of a trumpet which the Book of Exodus says emanated from Mount Sinai could just have been the imaginings of a people in an "altered state of awareness," Shanon hypothesized.

"In advanced forms of ayahuasca inebriation, the seeing of light is accompanied by profound religious and spiritual feelings," Shanon wrote.

"On such occasions, one often feels that in seeing the light, one is encountering the ground of all Being … many identify this power as God."

Shanon wrote that he was very familiar with the affects of the ayahuasca plant, having "partaken of the … brew about 160 times in various locales and contexts."

He said one of the psychoactive plants, harmal, found in the Sinai and elsewhere in the Middle East, has long been regarded by Jews in the region as having magical and curative powers.

The Texas Dildo Massacre (NSFW)

Bonnie Goldstein writes for Slate:

On Feb. 13, sex-toy retailers in Texas rejoiced when a federal appeals court ruled—just in time for Valentine’s Day—that a Texas prohibition against the sale of dildos and pocket pussies violated the 14th Amendment.

According to the Texas (ahem) penal code, it is forbidden to sell or to advertise an artificial penis or vagina "primarily for the stimulation of human genital organs." The statute makes an exception for instances in which the purchase meets a "medical, psychiatric, judicial, legislative, or law enforcement" need. Even so, in Reliable Consultants v. Ronnie Earle, the normally conservative 5th Circuit Court of Appeals struck down the ban on the grounds that it violated the right of ordinary citizens "to engage in private intimate conduct in the home without government intrusion."

One of only four states banning sexual doodads (the other three are Virginia, Mississippi, and Alabama), Texas is not about to take this insult lying down. Last week, state Attorney General Greg Abbott petitioned the appellate court to reconsider the matter en banc (see exerpts below and on the following three pages). Abbott wrote that, if permitted to stand, the court’s decision may "invite … challenges to previously-uncontroversial criminal prohibitions" on sexual practices such as "consensual adult incest or bigamy" (Page 4).
