The Difficulties of Being a Moral Leader in an Unjust World

I just Googled "Moral Leader" and found out I was number ten in Google. Here’s the number two result:

Jim Sterba, professor of philosophy at University of Notre Dame, gave this presentation at a panel on Global Ethical Leadership, May 6, 2004. He is the author of Justice for Here and Now, Social and Political Philosophy: Contemporary Perspectives, and The Triumph of Practice over Theory in Ethics.

The unjust world in which we live tends to reward those who cooperate with it, rather than those who oppose it. This makes it difficult to be a success (as the world sees success) and still be just. This has led many to adopt strategies of partial justice. They oppose some injustices but not others. This is what many of our so-called moral leaders do. But if we oppose some injustices while benefiting from and never challenging other injustices, how just can we be? Justice surely requires that we oppose the most significant injustices that relate to us, especially those from which we benefit. And this, I have argued, is a very difficult to do in the unjust world in which we live. It is especially difficult for anyone who aspires to be a moral leader in our unjust world.

To be a moral leader one needs a following. But it is very difficult to have a following if the path one is recommending is one that is very difficult to follow. This is why most of the world’s would-be moral leaders try to make it easier for us. They do not offer a full program for avoiding injustice. They try to make us feel satisfied if we succeed at ridding the world of just one or another unjust practice.

But neither we, nor our moral leaders, should be satisfied with partial justice. Justice demands a complete agenda for ridding the world of all important injustices that relate to us, particularly those from which we benefit. And difficult though it is a real moral leader will hold us to such an agenda even when it is necessary to focus now and then on particular injustices, like stopping the war against Iraq. Neither we nor those who would lead us must lose sight of our multi-faceted agenda if our goal is to rid society of the significant injustices that plague it. This is why true moral leadership in the unjust world in which we live is as important to society as it is rare.

Spitzer Didn’t Spend Enough On Prostitutes

From Slate.com:

Finally, there are the "Tier 3" sex workers, who can charge in excess of $10,000 per rendezvous. They may have only four or five clients, and they typically charge their clients an additional monthly surcharge for their various needs—rent, clothing, medicine.

Both Tier 2 and Tier 3 workers can typically do more to safeguard a client’s privacy. There are no guarantees, of course, but they tend to shun contractual relationships with agencies that advertise their services. There is less of a paper trail. They typically will only take a john via a referral, and even then, they may require that the john "date" them for weeks before deciding to offer up sex. I have heard of Tier 2 and 3 sex workers who vet prospective clients for months, sometimes hiring a private detective to see if the john is stable—psychologically and financially. As a former attorney general, Spitzer must have known all this.

What high-end clients pay for may surprise you. For example, according to my ongoing interviews of several hundred sex workers, approximately 40 percent of trades in New York’s sex economy fail to include a physical act beyond light petting or kissing. No intercourse, no oral stimulation, etc. That’s one helluva conversation. But it’s what many clients want. Flush with cash, these elite men routinely turn their prostitute into a second partner or spouse. Over the course of a year, they will sometimes persuade the woman to take on a new identity, replete with a fake name, a fake job, a fake life history, and so on. They may want to have sex or they may simply want to be treated like King for a Day.

Journalistic Glee At Gov’s Downfall

I must admit I’ve enjoyed this week primarily because of Spitzer’s fall from grace.

Mary McNamara writes for the LAT:

They may be a journalist’s five favorite words: Governor linked to prostitution ring. Now that’s a TV crawl promising a very good week for everyone (except, of course, for the governor’s family). The politician and the call girl. It’s like a Broadway musical starring Nathan Lane — everyone’s talking about it.

So when the news broke in the New York Times on Monday that Gov. Eliot Spitzer had been caught ordering out from Emperors’ Club VIP escort services, that sound you heard was the collective chortling of every reporter in America.

From morning to night, anchors and pundits filled MSNBC, CNN, Fox News and even the networks, barely able to keep a straight face while solemnly reporting that Spitzer, the self-described Mr. Clean who made a name for himself taking on corruption, was really Client 9, caught in a high-priced call-girl sting.

Oh, the joy of seeing his blank-faced, prim-mouthed apology — while the buzz of his cellphone, set on vibrate because, you know, he was going on TV, all but drowned out his words. (Who was calling, do you think? His mother? Charlie Sheen?)

On Wednesday, there he was resigning, possibly in the same suit, with the same strange lack of emotion and nary a glance for his wife, though apparently he left the phone backstage.

No worries about Spitzer just being a regular guy who had made a mistake — suddenly he was Central Casting for Unscrupulous Politician.

As details emerged — the payment amounts, the problematic money transfer, the possibly "not safe" nature of the services Spitzer requested, the description of his escort, that she went to D.C. from New York (What? There are no hookers in Washington? When did that happen?) — the excitement turned to glee.

If You Were A Hooker, How Many Diamonds Would You Be Worth On The Emperor’s Club VIP?

How much would men pay to have sex with you?

These are the unsettling questions that come to mind this week.

On the Emperor’s Club VIP, women were rated from one to seven diamonds. The seven diamond women cost $5500 an hour.

From the New York Post about Ashley Alexandra Dupre:

How Dupre fell into the world of high-end prostitution is not entirely clear, but friends from Wall HS in Belmar, NJ, said she had always had a thing for older men.

"She never dated anyone in our school," said a woman who would only gave her first name, Stephanie.

This 22-year-old, who was a year behind Dupre, said, "She was never slutty. She would date older guys, but it wasn’t like she was running around sleeping with everyone."

Dupre hints on her MySpace page that she had a difficult life.

"My path has not been easy. When I was 17, I left home," she wrote. "It was my decision and I’ve never looked back. Left my hometown. Left a broken family. Left abuse. Left and learned what it was like to have everything, and lose it, again and again.

"Learned what it was like to wake up one day and have the people you care about most gone . . . I have abused drugs. I have been broke and homeless. But, I survived, on my own."

Another relative told The Post, "She’s a very sweet girl . . . She’s always been very good to me and my children."

Dupre said she had recently ended a tumultuous relationship with a man who "walked out me" after she discovered he had fathered two children, the Times reported.

I’m Resigning As Your Moral Leader

In the past few days I have begun to atone for my private failings with my friends and my religious community. The remorse I feel will always be with me. Words cannot describe how grateful I am for the love and compassion they have shown me. From those to whom much is given, much is expected. I have been given much: the love of my family, the faith and trust of Orthodox Jews everywhere, and the chance to be Your Moral Leader. I am deeply sorry that I did not live up to what was expected of me. To every Torah Jew, and to all those who believed in what I tried to stand for, I sincerely apologize.

I look at my time as Your Moral Leader with a sense of what might have been, but I also know that as a public servant I, and the remarkable people with whom I worked, have accomplished a great deal. There is much more to be done, and I cannot allow my private failings to disrupt the people’s work. Over the course of my public life, I have insisted, I believe correctly, that people, regardless of their position or power, take responsibility for their conduct. I can and will ask no less of myself. For this reason, I am resigning from the office of Your Moral Leader. At Rabbi Steven Weil’s request, the resignation will be effective Monday, March 17, a date that he believes will permit an orderly transition.

I go forward with the belief, as others have said, that as human beings, our greatest glory consists not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall. As I leave public life, I will first do what I need to do to help and heal myself and my family. Then I will try once again, outside of religion, to serve the common good and to move toward the ideals and solutions which I believe can build a future of hope and opportunity for us and for our children. I hope all Jews will join my prayers for my friend, Rabbi Weil, as he embarks on his new mission, and I thank the public once again for the privilege of service.

Who Is Ashley Alexandra Dupree? The Woman Who Brought Down Eliot Spitzer

Our best source of information about her is her MySpace page.

It’s drawing thousands of reactions. Most of them are harsh. People love to hate on whores.

What in my view is the most common characteristic of sex workers? Laziness. They turn to sex work to get the most money for the least effort.

WCBSTV.com reports:

NEW YORK (CBS) ? Following the New York Times’ revelation that the girl known around the world as "Kristen," the  $4,000 call girl behind the Eliot Spitzer sex scandal, was really 22-year-old Ashley Alexandra Dupre, aka Ashley  Youmans, aka Ashley Rae Maika DiPietro, an outpouring of both support and mockery came from the hundreds of thousands who flocked to her MySpace profile Wednesday.

Her identity became the hot topic of Wednesday night, and even earned her yet another alias via Matt Drudge’s online news site The Drudge Report: "The Woman Who Rocked NY." The headline directs readers to her profile, which has already drawn several hundred thousand views. Play around on it, and you’ll find a blog from Aug. 30, 2007 where the aspiring singer-turned-prostitute describes her summer as a "roller coaster with so called friends, lovers, and family."

She goes on to provide her advice when it comes to deciding who to trust and become close to in life, writing: "Will that person be an asset to your life…(will that person have value): doesn’t have to be financial, i am talking respect, courage, and umm RESPECT."

The very first response comes from 31-year-old man from New York who considers Dupre to "have a lot of wisdom for a 22-year-old." He goes on to tell her to keep her head up "because people will lash out at you because they are small and cruel."

Another reader offers an embrace by writing: "Hang in there, Ashley! Stay positive, stay strong!"

A 23-year-old woman from Nebraska who admits she once considered becoming a prostitute leaves her e-mail address should Dupre want to talk to someone who "struggles in similar ways."

Yet then there are those who show no sympathy at all, and instead poke fun at Dupre’s fortune-turned-misfortune. One such reader posts a cartoon of Bill Clinton caught in bed with an intern.

Another praises Spitzer for losing his career "to a good looking chick."

And in typical toilet bowl ribs, multiple readers inquired about Spitzer’s endowments.

Some didn’t poke fun, but expressed outrage toward Dupre.

"Shouldn’t you really take this page down? You are not a role model. You are a whore," says a 32-year-old man from Milwaukee.

A 19-year-old man from Maryland suggested that the exotic vacations she’s been on in her life, some of which she posts pictures of in her profile came by "sleeping with rich men."

Other disgusted readers call her "disgraceful," or a "home wrecker," someone who people shouldn’t "rally for or support."

Prager H1: Remarkable, but the soon-to-be ex governor of New York State seems to have no friends and nobody seems upset to see him go. He had managed to alienate not only his enemies but his friends, if he ever had any. The real issue here is the status of your moral bank account… Ironically, Spitzer was a great one for prosecuting sex crimes. He was especially enthusiastic in his pursuit of Johns. Think he’ll volunteer to go to prison?
