Did Wall Street Cause The Crash?

During his State of the Union address last night, President Barack Obama blasted the bank bailout.

It seems clear that Obama and the Democrats will make banks and Wall Street their enemy in the run-up to the 2010 elections. It was working in Massachusetts. Polls showed late-deciding voters edging to the Democrat. She had taken up this bank-bashing, Wall Street-bashing rhetoric in the last few days of the election.

From the New York Times:

His tone was colloquial, even relaxed. At one point he joked that the bank bailout was

Jewish Las Vegas

Amy Bloberger writes Tom Ficara:

Good morning, Tom,

As you can imagine, Arthur was quite upset yesterday when he found out that Wanker had not followed through on her agreement. Instead, she simply just put this hearing off longer to continue to starve Arthur out. This time, Arthur is not going to let Trenchak postpone the hearing. Obviously, Wanker cannot be trusted and she came back with the exact same offer Arthur denied in Trenchak’s offer before the hearing last time. There was no reason to put it off if this was going to be their “final” offer. Arthur’s blood pressure was pretty high yesterday so I tried to get him out and get his mind off of things so he would calm down.

We look at it this way, Wanker is using the unemployment as a bargaining tool to get Arthur to settle for nothing. The offer of $5,000 will not help us at all so it is a moot point. We realize that we must remove the “bargaining tool” from the table – win, lose or draw! It must be removed from the table so that we can move forward with the EEOC complaint and subsequently the federal lawsuit against the Federation, Karp, Greenspun and Stone as well as the rest of the Board of Directors of the Federation. Arthur and I smell a rat within the entire infrastructure of the Federation. You would think that a charitable organization would treat their employees with respect and do the “right thing.” What this shows us is that whomever (the entire Board) has chosen to use these horrific tactics to run off their hard working employees rather than do the right thing – its all of them collectively. Something is fishy – very fishy within this organization. It is clear to Arthur that for some reason, he is the one the universe has chosen to fight this entire operation. Charry was chosen to help and fight it as well. They need to broken down, everyone removed from the Board and they need to start over with new and ethical directors who have the best interest of the community in mind. We are prepared to fight this for the next several years. It will take at least three years. Whatever it takes, we are moving forward. First with getting this unemployment bargaining tool out of the way even if we lose.

We will go into this hearing prepared and we will present Arthur’s case to the referee. We have three witnesses; Mark, Charry and you for round one. Wanker came with no witnesses at all last time. Even if Wanker stepped out of the way and didn’t show up for the hearing, the hearing still must go on with or without her for the state to determine if Arthur left with “just cause.” I believe we can prove that Arthur did leave with just cause. Actually, he was forced out! Just as was Charry. I think we can prove that. And, if we do win, this will also be a win for Charry when her hearing comes up. If the Federation has denied Charry’s unemployment, it shows me that they, once again, are using this tactic to keep up the bullying of hard working employees they have run off and are not about to do the “right thing”. We will absolutely be there for Charry’s appeal hearing whether we win this one or not! I think it is horrid that a “charitable organization” is doing this to the very people who have worked hard to support this community and who were dedicated to the work of the Jewish Federation. I hope that you and Charry will prepare a written statement to hand to the referee as an “exhibit” of evidence in the event she won’t let you speak. She has to accept exhibits of evidence to take into consideration when making her decision. Arthur will prepare a written statement for Charry’s hearing when that time comes and he will be there in her hearing as her witness too. We must take them down!

Once this hearing is out of the way, Tom, we are immediately going to file our complaint with the EEOC. The EEOC will conduct a thorough investigation into Karp’s history as well as interview every past and present employee under Karp’s direction. Charry will be subpoenaed as well as Andrew, Chase, Donna and Diane. It will take a year or longer for them to conclude their investigation. Once they have done so, we will receive a “right to sue” letter from them. Then, we will proceed to file a lawsuit in Federal court against the Jewish Federation, Elliot Karp, Danny Greenspun, Leonard Stone and the rest of the members of the Board of Directors of the Federation. We will supoena several of the employees who are still working at the Federation under Karp and members who were in the meeting Karp called when he apologized to the staff for being “harsh” and telling them he is stepping down and turning the day-to-day over to Lanny. This will only conclude our case. Karp will be called to the stand and will be grilled so hard that he will probably take a swing at someone. In addition, his mental records will be subpoenaed and he will be ordered by the court to have a mental evaluation. The Federation is already saying that Arthur is just a “disgruntled employee” as well as Charry. Arthur will have to go through a mental evaluation as well but he says to “bring it on.” He wants the community to know WHY he is disgruntled. This is going to ruin Arthur in this community as he will have the reputation of the guy who “sued the Jewish Federation.” But, you know what? They leave us no other choice. We have absolutely, nothing to lose…

We are looking forward to seeing you and Charry at Tuesday’s hearing at noon – sharp. The referee calls the meeting right on time… The gloves are off!

Do you think we should alert the media to this hearing? Would they show up to interview us at a DETR hearing? I know the media cannot come into the meeting but they can certainly be outside to interview both parties before and after the hearing.

Today Was Great Because…

* I studied a page of Talmud.
* I talked to people. I let them know my situation. I want to get married. It’s weird being the only one in shul not wearing a prayer shawl (never married men in Ashkenazi shuls normally do not wear prayer shawls).
* I had an extended conversation with ***** today and he initiated! I’m tired of being the one who always initiates the conversations. Forget ***** and ******. I enjoy talking to them but I am tired of always having to initiate and having them wander off when I’m just getting warmed up. Gosh, — is annoying. See if I open up to **** again. Fat chance. I’m close to &&& and &&&&&. I just hit it off with them. When I see them, I smile.
* I did my washing.
* I took a nap.
* I ate two slices of raisin bread toast tonight with peanut butter and lots of honey, then parsley and four delicious oranges.

Yoga Vs Orthodox Judaism Vs Alexander Technique

I tried to be helpful when I entered yoga and helpfully I ran my keytag past the scanner without assistance.

“You just checked yourself into the pregnancy class,” said the woman behind the desk.

Oy.

A lot of people ask me at yoga how I reconcile my yoga with my Orthodox Judaism.

“I don’t,” is my favorite response. I prefer to respect the integrity of the two systems and I don’t bother with integrating them. I have next to no interest in Jewish mysticism and next to no interest in the theory behind the yoga I’m doing.

I don’t take yoga that seriously. I do it because it feels good. It’s a pleasant change from my hovel. Yoga smells good, looks good, is filled with good-looking people, and everybody is nice to me and I don’t feel like a right wally there.

I wish somebody would ask me how I reconcile my yoga with my Alexander Technique. There’s a ripe field for discussion.

In many ways, Alexander and yoga are opposites. Kundalini Yoga, the brand of yoga I practice, is all about breath manipulation aka conscious breathing. Alexander Technique is against breath manipulation. It favors unconscious breathing.

Yoga is significantly about doing while Alexander is significantly about non-doing.

Yoga is about chanting and meditation. You don’t zone out in Alexander. You keep your attention on the present. You keep your eyes open. You look around the room.

Yoga is about postures and exercises. There are no postures and exercises in Alexander Technique.

So how do I reconcile these apparently irreconcilable practices?

Well, I give priority to the practice I spend the most on — and ding! ding! ding! that would be Alexander Technique.

When my yoga and my Alexander Technique collide, my yoga loses 90% of the time. (The ten percent it wins is when there are hardly any people in my yoga class and I feel like it would be rude to the teacher if I did not participate.)

Normally when I go to yoga, I skip 90% of the breath manipulation. I only do about half of the exercises and meditations. The rest of the time, I lie on my back in semi-supine and just enjoy the experience of people knocking themselves out all around me.

“Damn, another one bites the dust,” I think as I see people reinforcing bad habits, tightening and compressing their necks, shoving their spines down into their rectums, gasping for breath, and generally wreaking havoc with themselves.

I’d feel quite superior except for my great humility and lofty spiritual attainments.

So I’ve been thinking a lot about anxiety and fear lately. I’ve read that emotions are only possible with a certain alignment of the musculature. It is a mistake to think of thoughts and emotions as separate from the body. The alignment of the body shapes thoughts and emotions and is in turn affected by thoughts and emotions.

When you suffer fear and anxiety disproportionate to your circumstance it is in part because of horrible things you are telling yourself and in part because you are most likely pushing down, clenching, and tensing your neck.

If I can be conscious when I feel unreasonable amounts of fear and anxiety, I can come back to primary control (my head – neck relationship), I can let my neck be free, I can think up, and I can let go of downward pressure and unnecessary clenching and the stupid irrational things I am telling myself.

I have a good friend who uses gasps as exclamation points in conversations. It makes life more dramatic. I really enjoy her gasps. I enjoy them so much that over the past few months, I’ve started gasping too. Just at the right moments! To punctuate things.

But when I gasp, when anyone gasps, they always go down and tighten their necks. It’s bad Alexander Technique. So I want to give up gasping and other habitual postures. I want to be a light unto the nations. I can’t go around gasping and clenching and tightening my neck and going down.

I have meaningful and positive developments in my life almost every day. The problem? They’re purchased with borrowed money. I feel like I am living on a high level with regular therapy, daily yoga, Alexander Technique teacher training, daily Talmud study and prayer, writing in my journal, doodling on my blog, talking to girlies, but this idyl is largely removed from the stress of earning a living because I am just constantly borrowing money. I fear this is the lull before the storm.

I’ve got one more tasty treat already paid for — LimmudLA. Better make the best of it. I’m headed for the salt mines to pay the piper.

Rabbi Avrohom Union – Gatekeeper

Rabbi Union runs the Rabbinical Council of California, which converts about 30 people a year. He has the power to stop a potential conversions. He’s rejected hundreds of people from the program over the years. Many of them, including myself at times, have hated him for this, for doing his job.

It’s not his job as RCC administrator to be the friend of the potential convert or the business litigant. It’s his job to run a rabbinical machine and to decide what is true to the Torah and in the best interests of the Jewish community.

Rabbi Union is a gatekeeper, in mythology talk. “The threshold guardian or “gatekeeper” must test the hero

Blogging As Self-Defense

I’ve created this elaborate blogging empire because I can’t stand feeling vulnerable.

I remember as a kid not getting invited to birthday parties. I remember the big kids dunking me under water and holding my head there for about ten seconds.

I hated that!

I vowed that I would grow and find ways to defend myself.

I wanted to find a way to penetrate any gathering. In eighth grade, I realized that journalism was my perfect entre into society. It was my press pass to life. I could penetrate any world, from pornography to Orthodox Judaism, by saying I was a writer.

Brilliant!

I tend to be uncomfortable in a crowd unless I’m a journalist or a photographer. Then I can be in the mix but keep a professional distance.

I hate the anxiety of wanting to be with people who don’t want to be with me. As a writer, I can penetrate anything and say it is for my craft. I’ve created a vehicle to get into places where people don’t want me. My work is powerful enough that a lot of people who don’t like me realize it is easier just to deal with me directly rather than to deal with my fury online. I get press passes. I get important people talking to me. I feel, at times, like an insider.

I know you’re not going to invite me to your party. So I’m going to say I’m a writer and I’ll talk to people who went to your party and then I’ll critique your party on my blog and I’ll feel a part of your party and superior to your party and I’ll feel better about my loneliness.

I’m Standing Straight And Tall Using Alexander Technique

While I was off doing the Lord’s work, somebody impersonating my mother and father came into my live cam chatroom (I read his patter to my therapist, she went into hysterics, she think he is brilliant and has me to a tee):

guest15: How’s the 19th century quackery treating my ponce of a son today?
guest16: Now, Des, you promised you wouldn’t dash the boy’s dreams…
guest15: I’m sorry, Gill, but it’s got to be done.
guest15: You don’t want to end up like the boy’s birth mother, do you? Time to cut out the cancer, indeed.
guest16: But can’t you just hear his plaintive, girlish voice saying, “But, Dad, I’m standing straight and tall using Alexander Technique.”
guest15: I can hear it now.
guest16: “I’m like your ttle soldier, dad.”
guest15: “Look at me, Dad! Hee-hee!” I’ve had enough of his rot!
guest16: But now that you brought it up, Des, I don’t want to end up with cancer.
guest16: Where is the lad, des? You don’t think he’s ignoring us, do you?
guest15: The boy’s gone mute, Gill!
guest15: I’ve had it with his blasted web-cam. I’m going to pay him a fair-dinkum visit.
guest16: Typical. He always did that as a little joey whenever he knew he wa in the wrong.
guest16: I believe I’ll join you on that visit, Des. You take the high road and I’ll take the low road … and we’ll gut the lad and leave his entrails for the fair-dinkum magpies.
guest15: He must be off engaging in buggery with his friend Wayne Cherry again.
guest16: “Moral Leader.” What a ridgy-didge crock.
guest16: Or one of his Internet “friends.”
guest16: That’s a sorry lot, Des.
guest15: Always said he had no fiber. I could tell from his stools.
guest16: Sinkers every time!
guest15: He’d stuff his gob with sweets every chance he got.
guest16: He was like a little wallaroo addicted to the sweet stuff.
guest16: It’s no wonder the other children hated him so.
guest15: Gill, we ought to go toad-bursting…so I’ve something to feed the whelp when I catch up with him.
guest16: I saw a fair-dinkum big one on the porch this morning.
guest15: Our son is a toad.
guest16: Perusing the boy’s site, it’s interesting to see his definition of satire. Looks to me like he just lifted material from the Onion

The Combo

Friday night, the rabbi said the class on Hasidut would begin at 8 a.m.

He didn’t want to look like a dick and show up on time, so he strolled up in his best undertaker suit at 8:15 a.m. and the door was locked.

He banged on the door. It didn’t open.

He looked through the windows. The lights were on. He figured there were people inside studying Torah and they were ignoring him.

Shut out again!

Oh Lord, how long will you persecute Your servant?

So he walked 1.5 miles to another shul.

Then he spent the next weekend with his girlfriend.

He came back the next Shabbat and asked the rabbi, “Is there really class Shabbos morning at 8? Because I showed up two weeks ago and there was nothing. The door was locked. I knocked and nobody answered.”

“Yes,” said the rabbi, “There’s class. The combination on the lock is two and four simultaneously, then six.”

He had the combo! Now he could come learn Torah whenever he wanted.

He was so happy.

So he started setting his alarm every day for 5:57 a.m. Then a quick cold shower, brushed his teeth, drank his energy drink, and ran to shul with tefillin and herbal tea.

This morning, the clouds overhead were dark. He drew his black jacket around his thin shoulders. Looking up and towards downturn Los Angeles, he saw the sky was a vivid blue.

For months the sky had been pitch black at this time. Now he was seeing the light for the first time.

Daf Yomi beckoned.

I Need A Rich Broad

Ladies, I’m live on my cam.

It’s a crying shame that a man of my talents lives in squalor while so many unworthy characters have wives, kids and mortgages.

Josh: luke, you can’t keep this up. you have to find yourself a sugar momma and marry her.
Josh: you’re too smart to be living in squalor.
Josh: at this point you’re probably never going to make the cash you once thought you’d make
Josh: you’re better off using whatever fame you have and find yourself a rich broad, the older you get the harder it’ll be
Josh: quit being “yourself”, no one is truly themselves, we all pretend in order to function in society
YourMoralLeader: Is Alexander Technique truly the road to riches?
YourMoralLeader: or will it result in more misery and debt?
Josh: dude, you’re jewish now
Josh: what successful jews are into the alexander technique
Josh: i don’t see ron lauder doing his morning stretches with a bunch of tree huggers

Josh: you want to be successful? find 5 rich dudes in shul and study them.
Josh: what characteristics do they all share?
Josh: what are their daily habits, routine?
Josh: i had some aasian friends in college and they all told me that when they were growing up their parents always pointed to the jews and would tell their kids to “be like them”
Josh: that’s why so many asians live in jewish neighborhoods, they try to emulate us
Josh: i’m 33 years old, got my mba from an ivy league institution, have two kids and a wife, and own my own home, free and clear (with a little help from my parents)
Josh: why? because my parents always pointed to the doctors, lawyers, and bankers in shul, and like the asian parents, told me to “be like them”

YourMoralLeader: many parents in your shul encourage their kids to become bloggers?
Josh: they point to you and say “misfit!”
Josh: you’d have more clout with the jews if you at least completed college
guest12: what is the twisted journalism you speak of?
guest12: may I ask
Josh: jews look upon college dropouts with disdain
YourMoralLeader: does Alexander teacher train count as college?
YourMoralLeader: 12, my own
guest12: yours is the twisted journalism?
guest13: Luke, you’re going to have to decide which is more important: a rich chick, or a chick who’ll get off on being made to sleep at the foot of the bed.
Josh: dude, it ain’t college. at the end of your training you get a certificate from some phoney dothead in a turban.
YourMoralLeader: 13, aint the same chick?
guest13: There are women out there who meet both criteria, I’m sure, but much like black guys in Vermont, odds of finding one are slim.
YourMoralLeader: will you help me?
YourMoralLeader: if she’s rich, i dont mind sleeping with her
Beth: I don’t think Luke will learn to love a woman who doesn’t already meet his exacting standards. Maybe not even then. Sorry Luke.
