Do You Need A License To Practice Alexander Technique In Some States?

Anybody can call themselves an Alexander Technique teacher, just like anybody can call themselves a rabbi.

Like Judaism, Alexander Technique is not run by a hierarchy.

What I did not know was that you apparently need a license in some states to teach Alexander Technique. I hear that in states such as Florida, you have to get a massage therapy certificate or some such if you are going to do any job that involves putting hands on people.

I just picture myself stepping into the state of Florida, and as soon as I start following my directions, sending my head forward and up, letting my back lengthen to widen, and bam, some Florida Highway Patrol officer will cuff me and put me in the back of his car.

The Untimely Demise Of The Las Vegas Jewish Reporter

Amy, the wife of Arthur Bloberger, the editor of the Jewish Reporter, emails Las Vegas entertainment executive Tom Ficara:

Hello,

I’m Arthur’s wife, Amy. Arthur has been keeping me informed about the ongoing issues with the Federation. I know that Arthur isn’t able to say much at this time pending his litigation against the Federation and Elliot Karp. I know that he has informed his attorney about your show and the fact that there are many many witnesses out there who can attest to the fact that Elliot Karp is a “bad man.”

What I can tell you is that for the past six months prior to Arthur’s departure from the Federation, Elliot was humiliating him, riding him, making angry racial slurs toward him directly and about him to others. We realized that Elliot was trying “railroad” Arthur out of the job before they announced the closure of the Jewish Reporter. Arthur was determined that he wasn’t going to let Elliot win by trying to bully him and force him out. I think this ticked Elliot off even worse and Elliot stepped up his bullying tactics. This time, however, Elliot took it too far! Elliot made horrid racial slurs to Arthur directly; pointing his fingers in Arthur’s face criminalizing him for being a “non-Jew.” Well, bullying in the workplace may not be against the law (yet) but racially discriminating is against the law! It was not just one incident Tom, it was several racially discriminating events that brought it to the final blow. It was going on over a period of several months – Arthur just tried to stick it out because he wanted to take care of me and his family. Times are hard right now in Las Vegas and jobs are scarce so he took a lot of crap so that he could keep his family fed. More than I would have!

Arthur called me after the final incident with Elliot. It was yet another meeting where Arthur was racially attacked by Elliot. Arthur was having chest pains. I was already very concerned for his health as Elliot’s constant abuse and bullying was causing health issues for Arthur. I told Arthur to remove himself from that place immediately. I also told him to go straight to the hospital but Arthur just went home instead. I went home and got his keys and I took them to the office so they would process his final check.

I know that Arthur can’t say much about the details of the potential litigation and I probably should not share that information either but I want you to know that I did some investigation on Elliot as well and I do know there has to be a lot of victims out there.

I don’t think Danny Greenspun did a thorough background investigation on Elliot before he hired him. I think that Danny just wanted someone in there before he stepped down as chairman. The incoming chairman, Leonard Stone, would not even so much as listen to any of the complaints his employees had about Elliot Karp.

I feel for Charry because I know this type of personality. Elliot will keep on keeping on with the same behavior patterns until he is stopped. These types are sly foxes and they can snow their superiors and convince them they are great. All the while scheming to do evil to their subordinates.

However, I do want you to know that at least the Chairman of the Board, Leonard Stone, knows whats going on so don’t let them fool you that they don’t! The rest of the board may not know but he does for sure…

Arthur may not be able to say too much but I can 🙂

Amy O’Brien-Bloberger

Amy follows up:

Thank you for responding so quickly. I’m simply amazed as well! During Arthur’s 2 1/2 year tenure, I came to love many of the Jewish people we were honored enough to work with/interview. To have someone like Karp at the helm is simply, well horrid!

Arthur and I are keeping Charry in our prayers. I believe, at this time, she is fighting a losing battle. The longer it goes on for her, the sicker she is going to become. Arthur’s health deteriorated in six months to the point that I thought I was going to lose him from a heart attack. When Sunday would come around, Arthur’s demeanor would change. He would become quiet, sick to his stomach and would not sleep all night. He would get up and go to work and was just miserable all week. Like Charry, Arthur was trying to hang on to his job and not let Elliot win. Well, unfortunately, Elliot is left to run amok without supervision and he does whatever he wants without consequences. He steps up his tactics until he succeeds and he will continue to do so until he wins. Charry like Arthur has to ask herself if its worth it for her health! Elliot may have won the battles, Tom, but he hasn’t won the war! Leonard has to back Elliot up because Leonard really screwed up when he refused to listen to the complaints, period! This leaves the Federation as well as Karp, Stone and Greenspun personally liable for damages. If Elliot hasn’t learned about racial discrimination yet, Charry may be his next victim in that area too.

Unfortunately, litigation can take years and the Federation may drag it out as long as they can. But, there is strength in numbers and because of you, we are getting those numbers! I think you are on the right track with the lady that helped this monster get this job. I hope Greenspun goes after her! She snowed him!

Well, time to go. I wish I could give Charry a big hug. We really do understand what she is going through!

2009 Official Israeli Rabbinate Report on State of Jewish Divorce

Gadi Pickholz emails:

The Israel Father’s Rights Advocacy Council applauds the Chief Rabbinate and the National Bet Din of the Israeli Rabbinical Courts for publication yesterday of the most definitive and scientific analysis of the State of Jewish Divorce yet assembled.

Under the editorship of Av Bet Din and Head of the Rabbinical Court Rav Eli Ben Dahan, the official report submitted to the Knesset yesterday noted the following data:

* Jewish Divorces in Israel dropped in 2009 from 2008 by 2.3%, for a total of 9,986 divorces out of a population of approximately 5.5 million.

* Certain affluent Anglo Saxon communities saw significant increases in divorce, ascribed to significant downward economic mobility, including the Efrat and Ramot suburbs of Jerusalem and
the Raanana suburb of Tel Avlv. The only major urban center with a significant increase in divorce was Beer Sheva.

* Average time of adjudication of a divorce claim was 138 days uncontested, with 99% of all claims closed within 2 years time. These results are slightly better than the published averages for New York
and California. Including mandatory legal separation in certain American states prior to divorce filings, these time periods are significantly faster than many American alternatives.

* 71% of cases were contested and required adjudication, 29% were agreements by mutual consent of parties to pre-negotiated terms.

* There was a significant reduction in the number of Aguna cases declared by the Bet Din, dropping to only 44 legitimate claims from 73 in 2008, representing less than one half of one percent of the divorce cases.

* Of these 44 cases, only 10 cases required actual ruling of financial sanction by the court to secure resolution.

* The Bet Din continued to impose its “No Fault Divorce Does Not Mean No Try Marriage” posture when the marriage exceeds ten years or children are involved, usually insisting on a minimum 90 days of couples therapy before accepting the petition for divorce. Many American states have now imposed similar minimum hurdles.

* The total number of active Aguna cases remains steady at 180; the total number of cases of women refusing to accept a written Get as a strategy to secure improved financial and visitation terms from the husband (Agun, the male equivlent of an Aguna), rose to at least 201 indentified cases. This marks the fourth consecutive year that cases of women refusing to accept a written Get as a financial strategy exceeded the number of women denied a Get by the husband.

* As noted in both HaAretz and the Jerusalem Post, the multi-million dollar Aguna Industry continues to lack any and all explanation for their public relations assertions. Attorney Batya Kahana-Dror, Director of the organization Mavoi Setum, is quoted again in today’s HaAretz (p.4, Jan 27,2010) insisting that ” in contradiction to natural justice, law and halacha….thousands of women are barred from leaving failed marriages”. It is important to note, on the eve of the JOFA Conference and multi-million dollar fund raising event, the significant gap between the public relations hysteria designed to generate donations and the statistical facts of the Chief Rabbinate and the Israeli Government Central Bureau of Statistics. The gap between 44 cases nationally in a Jewish population of 5.5 million, and thousands of cases as claimed by the Aguna Industry money machine, screams for teshuva from every Rabbi who ever misrepresented these facts from his pulpit.

* While not stated by Ben Dahan, IFRAC again asserts that the suggestion that thousands of such cases exist in America and Europe, with a traditional Jewish population of only 1 million maximum, when only 44 exist in a statistical population of 5.5 million, is simply nonsensical. We hold the Diaspora Batei Din and Rabbinate in far higher regard than to suggest their incompetence exceeds the Israeli system by factors measured in the thousands. Most of the major communities are managed to minimal professional standards, and in the US and UK in particular withholding a Get is an actionable offense within the civil divorce proceedings. The statistical reality, if it could ever be measured, should be a significantly lower percentage given the power and authority of the civil courts to intervene in addition to the local Rabbinate.

* Nevertheless, both the National Council of Young Israel as well as the Orthodox Union websites, among others, gladly permit you to contribute to their coffers in the interests of helping end the Aguna Crisis. Not simply Shameful; but likely actionable.

Shabbat Unplugged

Ellis Kirschenbaum, executive director of Temple Emanuel in Beverly Hills, emails:

Luke,

Thank you to you and the committee that included Temple Emanuel in your ratings. Ratings are subjective and we can’t really quarrel with your consensus opinion with one exception – we think our worship services are extraordinary and are curious if your committee attended the ones we like the best.

On the third Friday of each month (but because of an unusual schedule change, this month on January 29) we are having our Shabbat B’Yachad service. This is an upbeat, contemporary musical service featuring our live Bayit Band led by Roy Zu-Arets, renowned Israeli composer and Cantor Yonah Kliger.

On the first Friday of each month, we have our Shabbat Unplugged service – an uplifting, spiritual musical service in the round. It is our most popular service (and my personal favorite.) The next Shabbat Unplugged is February 5.

Both services begin at 7:30 p.m.

Every Shabbat morning, we have a somewhat more traditional service we call the New Emanuel Minyan. It too features a great deal of music but is more contemplative in tone. We are having a guest Scholar on January 30, Rabbi Shelia Peltz Weinberg. She is the founder of the Institute for Jewish Spirituality. Services normally begin at 10:00 a.m. but because of Rabbi Weinberg’s presentation at 11, the service begins at 9:30.

On February 27, Anat Hoffman, the Director of the Israel Religious Action Center, working to create pluralism in Israel and the Chair of Women at the Wall, challenging discrimination against women at Jerusalem’s holiest place, the Kotel (Western Wall) will be speaking at the New Emanuel Minyan.

We invite you and your committee to join us at any or all of these compelling worship services.

Her Father Is Finally Dying

I was wondering where a friend was. I was told, “This sounds horrible, but her father is finally dying.”

I guess the old codger had been in poor health for years but he kept hanging on.

Now it appears he’s ready to kick the bucket.

Now my friend can get on with her life.

How Does Men Marrying Men Go Over In Orthodox Communities?

I expect that most of the left-wing American Modern Orthodox embrace same-sex marriage.

A Modern Orthodox source says: a male member of our community was recently outed as a homosexual. he married another dude and posted up pictures of the nuptials on a his website. we’re a sephardic community, not all religious, but all traditional, so it’s been pretty tough to absorb. i feel for the guy, i think he regrets posting the pictures. he seems like a good guy and had no intention to air our community’s dirty laundry. the community is pretty torn up about it. no one would spit at him, but many will ostracize and ignore him if he comes to shul. it amazes me how we welcome jews with open arms into our shuls who have committed crimes ben adam l’havero, but we reject jews who have committed crimes ben adam l’makom. i think we shouldn’t turn these people away from our shuls. we sure as hell don’t turn away the thieves and embezzlers who ruin peoples’ lives.

Luke says: i gotta admit, about a decade ago, a guy in my MO shul came out to me, and I stopped sitting next to him for a couple of weeks and then I calmed down and went back to sitting next to him and being his friend. It was a shock to me. It was hard to deal with at first. Men-on-men sex is hard for me to picture and to accept with equanimity. In the abstract, fine, but when I start picturing the mechanics, when I see men kissing men, it’s not a turn-on for me.

Have You Noticed My Change In Tone?

From my live cam:

Josh: wow luke, the beard has gotten really long. i haven’t been on your webcam in maybe 6 months. you look like you lost weight too
Josh: so i hear you’re officially a member of the tribe
Josh: now that you’re officially in, i’ll send you your own copy of the “protocols of the elders of zion”
Josh: but you gotta keep it on the down low, we don’t want any goyim knowing about it
YourMoralLeader: Reticence is my middle name
Josh: now that you’re a yid, have you become any less bitter
YourMoralLeader: hmm maybe, you’ll have to judge
Josh: i’ve noticed a change
YourMoralLeader: interesting
Josh: in your postings
Josh: you’re less angry
Josh: more optimistic
Josh: it’s a good thing
Josh: how’re the b**ches treating you
YourMoralLeader: with respect

Josh: dude, all kidding aside, you look 10 years younger, keep it up
YourMoralLeader: thanks matey, it’s the Alex Tech and the yoga
Josh: you need a little bit of “just for men” combed into your beard and you could pass for a 25 year old chabadnik

Josh: if you can’t stomach the site of two guys hooking up, stay away from “Big Love”
Josh: i’ve been watching that show for a few years now and it’s gotten very gay-graphic
Josh: i figured you would, coming from the background that you do
Josh: i’m sure there are some sda fringe groups out there that resemble juniper creek
YourMoralLeader: and you’re sephardi so you can relate to bigamy

guest5: Sinkers or floaters today, boy?
guest5: SPEAK UP!
YourMoralLeader: hi dad!
YourMoralLeader: sinkers pops
guest5: i might’ve guessed.

guest5: Is that you, gill?
YourMoralLeader: hi mom
guest6: yes, desmond, it’s me. i just dropped a fair-dinkum clanger using this bloody keyboard. my hormones are quite out of control today.
guest5: A fair-dinkum shame and a disgrace, that’s what you are, Sunny Jim!
guest5: “Look, Dad! Thanks to my Alexander Technique, I’m standing straight and tall now!” Bloody ponce!
guest5: Gill, I’m afraid your questionable theories about hormones have confused the boy.
guest6: now, des, if luke wants to place his faith in archaic 19th century charlantry, who are we to try to stop him? it does seem foolish .. even to me.
JOSHUA: They are as Jewish as The Shah of Persia#
guest5: Listen to this bloody ponce…he buys into my son’s feeble efforts to masquerade as an Orthodox Jew.
guest6: that’s what i’m saying, des.
JOSHUA: Their language is from the goy gutter
JOSHUA: UK I would say
guest5: Ask Rabbi Union about that one, mate!

guest6: and notice how he tries to insult us

The Seven Principles For Making Marriage Work

I love this book by John Gottman.

I didn’t realize that by age seven, boys almost never play with girls. While a third of preschool friendships are between sexes, by age seven, there are almost no best friendships between boys and girls.

Read On

I’ve been on this huge kick lately reading about marriage.

Well, I’ve been on a huge kick reading about marriage for the past 20 years.

I’ve never been married but I am fascinated by marriage. By jove, I’m gonna be prepared when I marry.

I also loved the book “Passionate Marriage” by Dr. David Schnarch.

It’s all about differentiation. Great word, great concept.

Here’s some info on Dr. John Gottman:

Dr. John Gottman is world renowned for his work on marital stability and divorce prediction, involving the study of emotions, physiology, and communication. He was recently voted as one of the Top 10 Most Influential Therapists of the past quarter-century by the PsychoTherapy Networker publication. Dr. Gottman
