I agree with Robert J. Avrech here. I’ve never seen a woman’s figure flattered by a pantsuit.
Pants Suits.
Ladies, if I may. Heidi Klum looks okay in a pants suit. But she’s got no hips, no bosom and legs that go on forever. She can get away with it. Sorta.
Marlene Dietrich looks, um, exotic in a men’s tux. But then she was bisexual so the vibe fits. Sorta.
But normal women with normal bodies—hip, thigh, and bosom—look, um, not so great.
Republican women are at their best best in skirts and dresses. Y’know, feminine attire.
Look, I’ve been working in the film business for over twenty-five years and in all that time I have never heard a costume designer suggest we put an actress in a pants suit because it’s glamorous, flattering or slimming. Usually they do it to make the actress look tough and masculine. In short: butch.
So. Leave the pants suits to Hillary Clinton and Debbie Wasserman-Schultz who look remarkably like West Hollywood female impersonators.
Rabbi Boteach writes for the Jewish Journal:
…Weiner needs help to overcome self-destructive tendencies that border on a death wish and that will consume him if he ignores them. Any elected official who tweets his swollen male appendage to a complete stranger and takes pictures virtually naked in the congressional gym is throwing his life and career in the air with no knowledge of where it will land. This is the behavior of someone with a subliminal desire for total self-annihilation. And no doubt it is the degree of his self-destructive tendencies that is giving his wife pause about staying with him much more than any bizarre sexual fetish.
Bill Clinton exhibited the same inclination to self-immolation when he had sex in the Oval Office, the single most watched and guarded place on earth. He knew full well what his staff and Secret Service must have thought when a young intern – with no official business with the President – went in repeatedly to claim so much time of the busiest man on earth. But Clinton didn’t care. He shared the same self-destructive tendencies that were also demonstrated by Arnold Schwarzenegger in having sex with a woman that worked in his house and was around his wife day and night, even keeping her on staff for a dozen years after she had his child. These are the marks of men who have become so deeply cynical about life that the only adrenaline rush that will satisfy is one where they their lives off a cliff. These are all men who live with an unending craving for love and incessant need for attention, forever proving themselves, and therefore despising their very existence which involves an eternal feeling of inadequacy and unworthiness. Men who hate themselves this much and strive eternally for the validation of others harbor a secret wish that, in way or another, the inner torment will cease. That’s why they play Russian Roulette with their lives. Anything to dull the pain.
To say that Weiner has a death-wish sounds serious but is actually quite common to the Broken American Male. They are looking for anything that will deaden the never-ending inner ache. That’s where numbing agents like alcohol, workaholism, and drugs come in, with sex being the anaesthetizing drug of choice. Sexual climax brings a feeling of emotionlessness, detachment, and numbness which quiets the feeling of anxiety and nervousness, however briefly. Here is also why sex becomes so deeply addictive, as it’s being pursued for the instant ‘hit’ it provides. But since it involves no deep connection to another human being, it is insubstantive in nature and thus the hit can only be sustained in ever-increasing doses.
Anthony Weiner will not resign. They’ll have to push him out, pry his cold hands from the door of his Congressional office. In his mind this seat is all he has. It defines him. Take it away and in his mind he becomes the proverbial tree in the forest that falls without anyone witnessing or hearing it. Without the bells and whistles of success Weiner sees himself as non-existent. No doubt he fears that his wife will leave him as well, convinced as he is that she only married him because of his office.
I am of a serious mind to run against Congressman Weiner to highlight the broken state of American manhood and how we must finally address it rather than watch more decent men combust.
This is going to be my most painful blog post ever.
I believe that the primary reason I’m not married is because of flaws in my character.
* My lack of regard for others. I’m so intent on doing my own thing and on imposing my will on the world that I think too little about the feelings and welfare of others. I’m not married for this same reason that I was not invited to my classmate Gavin Brown’s birthday party in second grade and I was not invited to the Sabbath home of any of my classmates at Pacific Union College until a mother forced her son Andy to invite me midway through eighth grade.
* My 12 years writing on the porn industry combined with my conversion to Orthodox Judaism. Both choices severely restrict the pool of available wives.
* My Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
* My poverty (primarily a reflection of my lack of character rather than a reflection of circumstance).
* My tendencies to isolate myself from whatever community I join.
* My narcissism and my fantasies of grandiosity. “I’d hate to see you lose your life in delusion,” said my therapist. My constant attention seeking. My need for mirroring. My history of exhausting people and pushing their boundaries.
* My fears of abandonment and of commitment. My inability to hold on to myself when in relationship with those I value aka my lack of differentiation.
* My low-grade chronic depression.
* My sex and love addictions. My overwhelming shame. The hole in my soul that I’ve tried to fill with excitement rather than intimacy, intensity rather than connection. It’s hard to stay on the Torah farm when you’ve seen Paris.
* My lack of emotional maturity.
* My betrayals.
Khunrum emails: “Do you really need 45 reasons to explain why you’re not married Luke? I’d say that “poverty” reason is enough, NO? I mean what kind of woman wants to get hitched to a broke guy living in a shoebox? But hey, when that Alexander cash comes rolling in things might change.”
Gavin Brown emails:
If you mean painful to read for its sheer banality, you’re right about that, mate!
Always the fair-dinkum whinger. Cry me a bloody river!
“Boo-hoo. I didn’t get invited to Gavin Brown’s birthday party.” I recall that you DID end up there — much to the dismay of all the children in attendance — thanks to Wayne Cherry’s mum pleading on your behalf to my mum.
And then a similar intercession occurred when you were in 8th grade.
You’re a boring, dishonest, useless little cunt, mate, and normal people don’t want you around.
The world doesn’t revolve around you, you know. Stop complaining that you suffered a lifelong hurt being snubbed at my party. Have you ever considered that I — and the other children — suffered even more because we had to countenance your presence?
You were a pathetic little creep then, and, apparently, you haven’t changed.
No wonder nobody wants you around. I’d suggest you go out and get a sheila, but they’re too smart for that. Who — except a therapist who’s paid to listen to your swill — wants to put up with your rot?
I throw quite the wing-ding every year on my birthday, mate. You’ll never see the likes of it … BECAUSE YOU’RE NOT INVITED!!!!!

Hi Luke,
you know, my friend, there is another way to look at this. All you have done is bypass the first couple of divorces. And had you participated in those divorces, you would still be as poverty-stricken as you may be now.
Had you been married earlier in life, her foibles and your foibles would have inevitably led to a breakup. Whereupon she would have taken you for most of what you had accumulated thus far. This would have caused you and probably some woman to connect on the rebound (you’re supposed to wait at least 3 years after a divorce before getting into a serious relationship). The rebound effect would have, of course, set up the billiards shot for the next divorce.
I know a number of guys who once were very successful and on top of their game. Married, kids, house in the suburbs. Well, after the missus finished with them, they lived in some garage apartment, essentially work to pay alimony and child support, and maybe own a couple of nice suits that are beginning to fray around the cuffs. Their lives look bleaker than yours.
So actually I think you should be patting yourself on the back, and breathing great sighs of relief, because where so many of your colleagues in La-La Land are living under the specter of being divested of all their assets, you’re still working hard at getting yourself emotionally put together so that when you do hook up with a suitable woman you may just have the requisite maturity between the two of you to make a nice go of it.
And by the way, if that is really your friend from Australia, and he still has such powerful feelings surrounding something from your teenage years, he has more problems than you do.

I just read a great essay against vegetarianism.
I’m a life-long vegetarian. Not from conviction but from habit. It increasingly looks to me like vegetarianism is not healthy.
There are some things I was raised with that I just don’t want to let go. For instance, I don’t drink or smoke or lend my bum to other blokes.
That’s the result of my Seventh-Day Adventist heritage.
If I was stuck in a place where the only available food was meat, I’d rather starve for several days than eat it. I fear my gag reflex would kick in if I were to ever try meat.
I’ll drink a mouthful or two of wine for kiddush but that’s about it. I don’t like the taste of alcohol. And I don’t like the behavior of most people after they’ve had a couple of drinks.
People all around me are suffering. They are doubled-up in pain because of their addictions to drugs, alcohol, debt, over-eating, sex, porn, and the like. I’m not immune to some of these things, but luckily my behavior and my finances are under control these days.
I can’t remember when I was last doubled-up in pain and feeling out of control. I think it might’ve been in September of 2008 when I was booted for my blogging from my Orthodox shul of the time (an expulsion since reversed). That’s when I re-entered therapy and started getting my head on straight. At the same time, I took my first Alexander Technique lessons and steadily reduced over the months my tendencies to react habitually to stimuli in ways that did not serve me.
I had some passionate and volatile dating experiences in 2009 and 2010, and however much they stung, they never interfered with my life. I never isolated because of them. I was never immobilized. The pain was clean and sweet. I never felt out of control. I just felt alive.
Feeling out of control frightens me. It’s happened to me a few times, particularly in the intimate realm where I let myself be led around by my hormones and by my desperation to connect to try to fill a hole in my soul.
I have most of the emotional tendencies of the addict but a combination of 12-step programs, psycho-therapy, Orthodox Judaism, friends, and Alexander Technique keeps me under control.
I have the same compulsions of the old days but they’re thinner. Attenuated. I feel a longer gap of inhibition between my impulses and my behavior.
I’m still troubled by depressive tendencies and by rampant anxiety. As I start to face up to more of myself and the devastating consequences of many of my isolating decisions (usually made in the name of the integrity of my blogging), the anxiety builds. Still, I know I’m on the right track. I’m rarely desperate.
When I am quiet and still, Mr. Fix It takes over my brain. He says I should do this and that and abstain from doing certain things I like and that come naturally. He says I need to work harder and smarter. I need to reach higher. I need to be finer, kinder, more moral.
Whose voice is this? It is the voice of my father. Dad’s a self-made man. A striver and achiever. I walk around with his voice in my head.
Dad’s keen on improving people. He holds himself to a high standard and pushes those around him.
I remember dad on cold winter mornings covered with blankets and the windows wide open for the fresh air. There’s frost on his chin. His hands hurt from the cold. But he’s healthy.
I see him eating food that nobody else in the family will touch and bitterly calling himself “Garbage Can Dad.” For me, the bananas are over-ripe. For dad, they’re fine. He was born in the depression and he doesn’t take food for granted. By comparison with him, I’m spoiled. I’ve never lacked.
It’s up to me to replace his voice in my head with one more amenable to my values. I’d like to do less lashing of myself and to hear instead an attitude of gratitude.
I discuss the weekly Torah portion with Rabbi Rabbs every Monday at 7pm PST on my live cam and on YouTube.
This week we study Parashat Shelach (Numbers 13:1-15:41).
* How are Rabbi Rabbs’s criticisms of the land of Israel different from the spies criticisms?
* This changing name thing happens a lot in Judaism. It rarely happened in goyish life. In this parsha, Moshe changes Hosea’s name to Joshua.
* Note that the spies brought back a juicy bunch of grapes, not a juicy shiksa. Speaking of shiksas, at 7:30 pm PDT June 19 I will deliver a talk on the Shiksa Menace 1.0 (the blonde WASP) to the Torah Man and also cover the Shiksa Menace 2.0 (the Oriental) and the Shiksa Menace 3.0 (the sultry latina). Beyond Baroque at 681 Venice Blvd, 90291.
* What will the goyim think? That’s Moshe’s argument to God when God wants to wipe out Israel. (Numbers 14:13–16.) What the goyim think about Jews is important. The whole purpose of Jews is to witness to God. I believe God was serious about killing off the Jews. The only purpose of Jews is to carry ethical monotheism to the world. If the Jews won’t do this, there’s no reason for them. God holds adults responsible for their behavior, even though they were once slaves.
* Sabbath violator (picking up sticks on Shabbat) is stoned to death. Judaism is a hardcore religion. (Numbers 15:32–34.)
* I wonder if part of Israel’s reluctance to conquer and take possession of the land of Israel is that it would mean getting off divine welfare and earning their own living. (Artscroll, p. 805)
Greg Leake emails: Hi Luke,
A few days ago you posted a piece entitled “What do you notice“? in reference to the Alexander Technique.
I couldn’t help but be struck by the similarities I encountered describing the Zen Buddhist practice of zazen. Often, I believe, zazen is thought of as meditation. Actually, though I may be mistaken, I think a closer translation would be “sitting just to sit.” Or as a friend who is a Zen Buddhist once said to me, “Just being aware of whatever a human being can be aware of.”
The instructions were roughly:
1) Sit comfortably so that the body can be at ease.
2) Allow the mind to be at ease.
3) Be aware of anything that disturbs that ease.
So as you can see, one could just as easily have said, “So that one can notice anything that disturbs that ease.” And I have noticed much about the Alexander Technique involves the focus of awareness at ease. I plan to get around to trying out a few lessons.
At the end of Torah Talks, Rabbs told a [fictional] story that involved a goy family moving into his neighborhood. Isolated, they apparently reached out to be participants [in an Orthodox synagogue, getting synagogue honors restricted to Jews by Jewish law]. This created a lot of trouble for both them and the Jewish community. This story doesn’t mean a lot to me, as I see it as kind of a man-bites-dog scenario.
However, what it does bring up is the more normal case of a neighborhood composed of a mixture of Orthodox Jews and citizens who are not Jewish.
I know all about this, because I am a normal Texan who lives in a neighborhood composed of normal Texans like myself and Orthodox Jews. (Many of them from the east coast.) My neighborhood is rather upscale. Perhaps upper middle class could describe the socio-economic tenor. On any given block one might find, in general, half normal Texans and the other half Orthodox Jews. (Primarily modern Orthodox.)
A sort of uneasy truce looms over the neighborhood. Rabbs’s man-bites-dog story really can’t apply on a street where half of your immediate neighbors are ordinary Texans. It is troubling the way the Orthodox community does everything that it can to ignore the rest of the citizens. This is an unusual posture for Texas and other states in the South that are traditionally known for their friendliness and their hospitality.
The other day I ran into an elderly Jewish lady on her way Israel with her husband. We fell into an interesting conversation about the phenomenology of esoteric traditions and higher states of consciousness. At one point I asked her if she were Orthodox. And when she replied that she was, I explained that I was a bit surprised, as most of the Orthodox I have met would regard some of her passions as being dubious in respect to the Torah.
She looked at me an made a circular gesture with her arms and said, “They create a bubble around themselves, and they don’t let anything out and they don’t let anything in,” and then she looked me in the eye and endeared herself to me for all time when she said, “but I am not that way.”
Some of the Orthodox friends I have managed to make actually complain about the lack of friendliness themselves. Once I replied, “Well I guess they’re not always friendly to non-Jews.” My friend said, “Hey! They’re not even friendly to me.”
so I have run into a few people, including rabbis, who find this lack of friendship and neighborliness troublesome themselves, even while they try to observe the dynamics that exclude the outside world. I am sure in New York City and other places where multicultural neighborhoods exist block by block and people all know their place, everyone has long since become accustomed to this claustrophobic, alienated way of dealing with neighbors. However, this is all still fairly new to the deep South, and frankly, we are very courteous about people’s preferences, but too much exclusivity arouses a measure of distrust. My hope is that as the decades wear on, a more cordial spirit can come to pass between the community and normal Southerners.
On the other hand, this may be as much a product of northern migration as it is specifically of Orthodox Judaism. I explained all this to one Jewish guy from New York who came here to go to dental school. He said to me, “Hey, all these unfriendly people are from New York City. I came down here to get away from all that. I want to work on a ranch.” I thought to myself, you know, that kid just might work out.
