Cathy Seipp Died A Year Ago Today

Stupid bitch. My social life has collapsed since then. I can no longer go to the LA Press Club with any feeling of belonging. I’m just a stray dog again. I need my owner. I want my special doggy bowl and doggy pillow and I want to go for a walk.

Cathy was one of the few people who enjoyed my grotesque sense of humor. We were like soulmates. She got me. I loved her. People thought we lived together. "That’s a big compliment to you!" she said when I told her that rumor.

As I walked around yesterday, I kept thought I was running into her. There was a woman with that spiky platinum blonde hair. Another chick looked like Cathy in her twenties. But in the end I was just on a long lonely walk to nowhere.

Lewis Fein says: "Sandra Tsingh Loh’s working on a customized motorola phone so we can make contact with Cathy. Sandra soldered some wires and bought a chip from kyoto to activate the phone."

From my live cam chat (it’s had 6,000 visits since its launch two weeks ago):

Guest777minus7:  In his humility, he calls himself "Your Moral Leader" instead of "The Moral Leader."
Guest777minus7:  He personalizes it.
YourMoralLeader:  What is the appropriate age to cam with someone and what sort of relationship should you have? Should one be married before one cams?
guest21:  ha,
Guest777minus7:  Jesus compared himself to look prophetically……….

aviva:  ding ding he gets the prize
YourMoralLeader:  it’s a small world after all
Guest777minus7:  That’s a great line Luke.

Guest777minus7:  Guest 21 are you a fellow monotheist in the Christian faith?
guest21:  i’m a christian, yes

Jewish Spirituality

I have close to zero interest in spirituality, prayer and developing a relationship with G-d (if I want to feel the transcendent, I just listen to a good pop song). About the only rabbi who made any sense to me on these matters was Mordecai Finley. Now I’ve discovered Aryeh Ben David and his latest book The Godfile: 10 Approaches to Personalizing Prayer.

I fear rereading this book because I might start to implement some of his suggestions and then I might really get something out of prayer and then I might take on some of the qualities I’m putatively asking for and then I’d have to become less cynical and just finer and frankly, I don’t want to be bothered. I just want to, well, you know what I just want to do (aside from studying Torah)…

By Aryeh Ben David

There are two widespread stereotypes of spirituality: 1) of spiritual behavior, and 2) of the goal of spirituality.

Often I ask a group of students, "What does a spiritual person do? What does a spiritual person look like?" I inevitably receive answers like: "they are mellow, they meditate a lot, or do yoga, they sing, they dance, they’re probably vegetarian or vegan, they wear flowing clothes, etc." Then I ask the group "how many of you fit into these categories?" and rarely a hand goes up.

Then I ask the students, "What is the goal of becoming more spiritual?" Again, the answers usually revolve around the stereotype of "being at peace with oneself, achieving nirvana, calm and serenity."

Unfortunately, maybe tragically, these pervasive characterizations are terribly limiting. They cause, consciously or subconsciously, most of the people I meet to conclude that because they do not fit into these stereotypes, they are simply not spiritual beings. These prevailing stereotypes exclude most of them, perhaps most of us. I cannot count the number of times that people have said to me, "I’m just not a spiritual person."

Finally, I ask the participants, "Do you think that you have a soul? Virtually all of them respond affirmatively. "Well," I ask them, "what does this soul do? What does it occupy itself with? Does it ‘just sit there,’ or is it active in any manner? Does it ever, did it ever, communicate, somehow, to you?" Inevitably, the same people who had commented previously that they were not spiritual beings are now talking profusely about an experience that they’ve had which they attribute to their soul.

Jewish spirituality involves listening to the voice of our soul. Jewish spirituality does not culminate with personal inner peace, rather it gives inner clarity to understand how to act and contribute to the community and the world.

Jewish spirituality understands that every human being is a spiritual person, and that this spirituality should be the motivating force of his or her life and action.

I’m A Righteous Man Because I Don’t Hate People In My Heart, I Hate Them On My Blog!

I have some reflections on the Torah’s injunction not to hate your neighbor in your heart.

I’ve been studying Sefer HaChinuch (the 14th? century book of Jewish education) on Leviticus 19 (the Holiness Code).

Which Jews are we allowed to hate these days? In the Bible, G-d seems to hate the Jews (as well as the goyim) much of the time and He goes around smiting them.

Aren’t we supposed to emulate G-d?

Then the rabbis took the fun out of hating our fellow Jews. They severely restricted the Jews we’re allowed to hate and how we’re allowed to hate them.

What’s the point in being Jewish if you can’t hate on your fellow Jews?

Here’s my "Everything’s Going Wrong" whinge on video.

From my live cam chat:

guest110:  oh a shirt with a collar, what’s the special occasion?
guest110:  the picture is looking much better btw
guest110:  still, the quality is a little like the videos in Myst
YourMoralLeader:  thank you!
YourMoralLeader:  it’s cold
guest110:  you’re cold?
guest110:  oh is that why the extra shirt?
guest110:  got it
guest160:  is this a chat about clothing?
guest110:  so do you know how many of the hits to this site are unique?
guest162:  Why am I always 162? And what am I hearing?
guest110:  are you hearing the mind worms?
guest162:  No, it was Luke. Drawling
guest110:  drawling?
guest162:  And listening to himself, apparently
guest110:  I’m not getting that audio
guest162:  It’s a conversation about heretics
guest162:  and an angry God
guest110:  that’s always exciting
guest162:  If you’re Moses
guest110:  lots of interesting death involving heretics and an angry God
guest162:  but probably not interesting video
guest110:  I prefer to read about it than watch it
YourMoralLeader:  Which Jews are we allowed to hate these days?
guest162:  Now there’s "music" – does no one else hear it?
guest110:  the ones who publicly humiliate us
YourMoralLeader:  like me?
guest162:  Is this Air Stream:
guest110:  hmmmm
guest110:  good question
guest110:  I’m sure there are those that do think that way
guest110:  do you see yourself as someone who humiliates  other people?
guest162:  Don’t get me started on the Bad Luke who humiliates people
guest110:  or do you justify what you do by saying they did the humiliating thing and you’re just pointing it out
guest110:  and how does that jive with the way you’d like to be?
YourMoralLeader:  Good questions, I don’t have an answer except that I want to do more good than harm with my life and blogging.
guest162:  Great good? Or greated Adsense?
guest110:  ah, it’s about the $$
guest164:  hey whats up?
YourMoralLeader:  hi

Words Don’t Come Easy To Me

I’m just a music man, melodies for my best friend.

To better express my feelings and to placate my narcissism, I’ve made new video slideshows about my favorite person set to my favorite songs:

Words by F.R. David.

Drive by The Cars.

The Captain of her Heart by Double.

I made these videos at 1 a.m. I was listening to some good songs and I couldn’t sleep and I felt all emotional…

I bought a new cam that arrived today — the $130 Logitech QuickCam Ultravision. It took me half an hour, but I hooked it up and got it running. It was horrible. Both the sound and picture was worse than my $50 Quick cam. I’m sending it back.

From my live cam chat:

palestine4ever:  Luke, are the anti-war protests Good For the Jews?
User guest113 left the room.
palestine4ever:  I think they are, and I’ll explain why to you Zionists
palestine4ever:  These declasses and hippies could right now be storming city halls across the land to strike a blow at Jewish power
palestine4ever:  Instead, they’re in carefully cordoned areas, chanting god knows what in Spanish and won’t be seen again until the next Critical Mass bike ride
palestine4ever:  Anything which fortifies the status quo is Good For the Jews, in my semitic opinion
palestine4ever:  This is the kind of cutting edge content you need
palestine4ever:  ugh
palestine4ever:  BUY CUPS LUCAS
palestine4ever:  Although you have kind of a cleaned-up Noel Coward vibe going on now
palestine4ever:  it fits you better than the whole Too Poor for a Haircut and Shave vibe
palestine4ever:  he’s watching video
palestine4ever:  Luke, was the SDA convert’s attempt to bring you back into the fold wholly unsuccessful?
palestine4ever:  Well, I’m going to sit quietly and wait for Amalek
palestine4ever:  When I see a group of hasids angrily shouting and running in the streets, I’m frightened
palestine4ever:  call it genetic memory if you will
palestine4ever:  Luke, here’s a fascinating SEO story for you
palestine4ever:  http://www.financialpost.com/magazine/story.html?id=324817
palestine4ever:  it’s about "search arbitrage"
palestine4ever:  and how a company got (and then lost) $160 million in a week
palestine4ever:  it’s greek to me, but apparently they stuck a penny in Google AdSense and they drew out a dollar
palestine4ever:  and that Chris Perillo guy that was here
palestine4ever:  there’s a post on techcrunch mocking him for wasting dozens of hours on Pay to Click ads
palestine4ever:  and never getting paid from the scam
palestine4ever:  some of the most bizarre hucksters are gathered around this web 2.0 thing

palestine4ever:  We Must Create an Income For Luke Ford and Secure a Future For His Unborn Children
palestine4ever:  that is my new motto
YourMoralLeader:  yes please
YourMoralLeader:  I’m making no progress, just sinking deeper in debt
User guest115 left the room.
palestine4ever:  from what I can gather, VCs are tossing money everywhere these days
YourMoralLeader:  Everywhere i walked today, I saw women who looked like Cathy Seipp. Some had the platinum blonde thing going, others looked like a younger Cathy. She died a year ago tomorrow.
palestine4ever:  Do you miss her, Luke?
YourMoralLeader:  I was all prepared to make a touching video about my feelings on this, but I get so angry at my new cam
YourMoralLeader:  that I’m emotionally blocked.
palestine4ever:  or are you at peace with this?
YourMoralLeader:  Forget missing her, I’m just totally lost without her
YourMoralLeader:  socially lost
YourMoralLeader:  She was my social connection, she brought me in from out of the cold. I was a stray dog she adopted.

Street Kings – Riveting New Crime Drama Starring Keanu Reeves

I just caught an advanced screening. Here’s my video review.

The movie’s about an alcoholic. Normally I hate movies about alcoholics. I can’t stand alcoholics. I don’t know why, but it is one weakness (along with drug abuse) that I find particularly loathsome and I have no compassion. Drug and alcohol abuse just seem to me like an unhealthy way to escape your problems. Why do people become drunks and drug addicts? Because they are bored and their lives are empty.

Anyway, this alcoholic can still shoot straight and he kills a lot of bad guys and I think that’s cool. Then he takes on some rogue cops and the movie hurtles to the finish.

It kept my attention throughout. There’s plenty of action and humor and the plot doesn’t dawdle.

Here’s the plot outline on IMDB: "Tom Ludlow is a veteran LAPD cop who finds life difficult to navigate after the death of his wife. When evidence implicates him in the execution of a fellow officer, he is forced to go up against the cop culture he’s been a part of his entire career, ultimately leading him to question the loyalties of everyone around him."

Rabbi Steven Weil’s OU Appointment To Be Approved Next Week?

I hear that the Orthodox Union will confirm Rabbi Weil‘s appointment as executive vice-president (CEO) at its next Executive Meeting which takes place next week. OU president Steve Savitsky should pack the committee with supporters of the motion – and it is expected to pass easily. Effective date for the appointment is 2009.

Beth Jacob will seek a new rabbi to take his place.

I’m A Shark With The Ladies

I’d like to think of myself as a ruthless exploiter of the fairer sex.

It helps my self-esteem and my street cred in Pico/Robertson.

Sheesh, whenever I speak to a damsel for five minutes in a public place, the poor lass gets warned about me.

I’m a shark!

Anyway, I’m a shark with his car in the shop. Anyone in Pico/Robertson who wants to give me a ride for two miles west on Pico Blvd Wednesday 10:30 am to Fox, let me know. I’ll give you a souvenir tooth and a place in the world to come.

I learned a new prayer in chat this morning: "May salvation arise from heaven — grace, kindness, compassion, long life, abundant sustenance, heavenly assistance, physical health, lofty vision, living and surviving offspring, offspring who will neither interrupt nor cease from the words of the Torah."

I’ll let you know how it works for me.

Has Hillary Clinton’s Menopause Rendered her Catatonic?

Joe emails: Barack Obama, a U.S. Senator, is a member of a church with a pastor who goes after the state of Israel like he is a hamas jugend. Said pastor goes after the US with all the conspiracy theories of Oliver Stone. Said pastor basically gives free reign to black nationalist anger.

The damage done to the "clean" image of Barack Obama is per se totally fatal. Any member of that church is guilty by association for statements made ex cathedra by that rabbi. How Barack Obama as a US Senator can simply say, well, I may have heard some of this but I condemn it, is a complete joke. He is not some church member with a job at the local Walmart. He is a US Senator. He has obligations regarding political discourse and religious tolerance.

That he can get away with this, without being required to shame Wright completely and to apologize for ever being a member of that church (which he won’t do, you do not apologize for what you do freely if you are the forthright person that Obama is supposed to be), is a complete failure by Hillary Clinton.

One speech by her saying, in essence, my competitor tolerates hate which is intolerable and associates with words that cannot be associated with, and Obama is over. I just do not get it.

Creating A Relationship With God

Over Shabbat, I read a good book The Godfile: 10 Approaches to Personalizing Prayer by Aryeh Ben David.

He writes on page nine:

Many of us walk into a synagogue with the expectation that a spiritual experience will descend upon us, regardless of how much or how little we have written in our personal Godfile. We expect that the setting, prayer book, or maybe even the singing, will elicit spiritual feelings. But in truth, neither the synagogue nor the prayerbook can create a spiritual connection.

During the time of formal prayer, it is practically impossible to create a relationship with God. The synagogue can only serve to create a relationship with God. The synagogue can only serve to remind you of a relationship that already exists. Praying in a synagogue can certainly eclipse many of life’s distractions, and help focus a relationship with God, but it is very unlikely that it will actually create the relationship.
