Based on the overwhelming response to the "influentials" list last year, Lynton, Ginsberg and Sanderson put together a list of the best pulpit rabbis in the country. The most powerful people, it turns out, are not always the most inspirational. Here are the criteria for pulpit rabbis:

· Ability to inspire congregation through scholarship and oratory
· Success in growing and expanding congregation

I Plan, Sherre Laughs

So a couple of weeks ago, the publicist for Rabbi Sherre Hirsch’s first book, We Plan, God Laughs, invited me to email in questions for the rabbi.

I did.

Five days later, the publicist emails me to say that the rabbi will not be doing any more interviews because of family stuff.

I was able to derive a sublime spiritual lesson from the experience, more profound than any I read in Rabbi Hirsch’s book on Shabbos.

So here are my questions that the rabbi won’t be answering:

For Rabbi Hirsch. Please only answer the questions you find interesting.

* So why did you leave Temple Sinai? Do you prefer what you are doing now, being a media superstar et al?

* How has being a wife and mother affected your work as a rabbi, counselor and writer?

* What inspires you and what depresses you about the state of Conservative Judaism today?

* If you could change one or two things about Conservative Judaism, what would you change? Why aren’t you Orthodox? Do you get religiously lonely as a Conservative rabbi (as there aren’t many observant Conservative laity)?

* I suspect that you’re not able to help everyone you counsel etc… How do you deal with that?

* How do you reconcile your desire to be compassionate with your religion’s stringent standards? Do you tell people, ‘You can’t do that. It’s a sin."

* Do you believe in and talk about sin and divine punishment for sins?

* Do you think there’s life after death?

* What are the advantages and disadvantages of having women in the rabbinate?

* What have you learned about the news media from your first-hand experiences?

* How has your interfaith work affected your Judaism? Is it easier or more difficult to spiritually counsel Gentiles? How do you counsel someone who believes Jesus is G-d?

‘All The Sad Young Literary Men’

The New York Times writes about this new novel:

Then there’s Sam, who wants to write “the great Zionist novel.” Talia, Sam’s Israeli girlfriend, tells him he doesn’t love the land enough to write the great Zionist novel. There are other girls — “was he a small-souled coward, not simply to have two girlfriends?” — and other causes, but basically Sam is on a not untypical journey for a sad literary young man: a journey toward never writing his great epic, even though, in Sam’s case, he happily took a publisher’s advance. In some senses, Sam is the least unlovable of the trio. His bad character is the more comical and his shallowness seems connected, in a deep way, to the shallowness of the surrounding culture, which at once appears to promise him the world and throttle him to death. “The living writers of the world were Sam’s enemies, Sam’s nemeses,” Gessen writes. The best scene in the book arrives when Sam decides to call Google:

“‘Look,’ he said. ‘My Google is shrinking.’

“‘Excuse me?’

“‘My Google. I Google myself and every time it gets lower.’

“‘Right. Pages often go off-line and then they no longer show up on searches.’

“‘Yes, I understand that, but this is getting out of hand. I was in the mid-300s before. Now I’m at, like, 40,’ Sam lied.”

User guest68 left the room.
OldAbraham:  Also Luke, it looks like the sort of tremor a Parkinson’s victim has (May G-d provide our doctors with the wisdom to cure this disease)
guest28:  because i told you before i am all women…the whole geshefeft…how can i prove this to you ?
OldAbraham:  Only etrannies declare themselves to be "all women [sic]".  Real women can be judged that at a remove
OldAbraham:  Send me a photo

User guest56 changed their name to Sarah.
OldAbraham:  Describe your yicchus

OldAbraham:  Breeding, not playing
User Sarah left the room.
guest28:  who is under the desk gina ?
OldAbraham:  Like overeducated women elsewhere, too many Jewish women use their vaginas as toys while Palestinian women use theirs as cannon.
guest28:  i couldn’t have said it better myself
OldAbraham:  The Muslims are breeding an army of world beaters.
OldAbraham:  While Jewish women are watching "Sex in the City"
guest28:  that is why the state of israel is in big trouble
guest28:  are you mr. big ??
OldAbraham:  So you Jewish women who are able, whether you are married or single, PROCREATE NOW
guest28:  as we speak or blog
OldAbraham:  I am not able to give birth to a baby
OldAbraham:  In fact, this is what I want you to do
guest28:  it does not matter machshave kemaseh
OldAbraham:  Resolve that your next bit of ovulation does not go to waste like the sperm of a man who masturbates, casting his seed on the ground
guest28:  what shall i do oh great avraham ?
OldAbraham:  You must find a suitable man and have DANGER SEX with him
OldAbraham:  Safe sex = no increase
guest28:  i am all for danger sex
OldAbraham:  Real sex = DANGER SEX = Pregnant with the possibility of life
guest28:  mit vaimen???
OldAbraham:  Porn = condoms = birth control = population control for the wrong people = death
OldAbraham:  I am willing to air-ship my frozen sperm to any fertile woman who wants some
guest28:  luke spills his seed in vain like there’s no tommorow
OldAbraham:  So long as she is the right sort
guest28:  bring it over its local in brooklyn
OldAbraham:  I am afraid your family would not approve
OldAbraham:  and then your yichhus would diminish
OldAbraham:  But there must be many yeshiva boys around for you to use for this purpose
guest28:  my family is ok with you as you are one of our forefathers
OldAbraham:  Gina, you too
guest28:  i like a man with years of experience
Gina:  plumber crack alert
OldAbraham:  Otherwise, what we now see on the screen will be the fate of the Jewish people

OldAbraham:  The Arab woman understands this.
guest28:  tuchie crack has been seen !!
OldAbraham:  Not for her the diaphram or the pill
Gina:  whats the good vort?
OldAbraham:  BREED
OldAbraham:  It feels good, and it is good for your people
Sarah:  mm what is this stream about
OldAbraham:  It is about the demographic peril the Western world is in
Gina:  its a stream about nothing
OldAbraham:  Luke and I are renegade offshoots from theNational Alliance
Gina:  its going downstream

guest28:  i am going to shoprite NOW
Gina:  no yolk
OldAbraham:  Then buy some that are not, and turn them into babies
guest28:  men…they are not what they are cracked up to be
Sarah:  so he is a breeder, i see no kids
OldAbraham:  Use Craigslist if you must (as some frum women do)
Gina:  I want to adopt you
OldAbraham:  Men are sources of semen without which there can be no babies
guest28:  no i get him first
OldAbraham:  I am available to be adopted by anyone who can afford the experience
guest28:  i am a rich b**ch
Sarah:  so now i understand why homeless people procreate
OldAbraham:  The Torah has forseen this struggle, and provides for numerous forms of polygamy
guest28:  how old are you abraham?
Sarah:  to bring forth more homeless people
OldAbraham:  Thus, you may be my wife, pelegesh, or other
Gina:  how old is your semen, more importantly

Gina:  you’re right Welchs would not do
Gina:  stick with Kedem
OldAbraham:  18 is perfect time to start as you can then have many
Gina:  right grip

User guest69  entered the room.

User guest69 left the room.

OldAbraham:  But what is the ratio
OldAbraham:  That business of a woman’s hips alone indicating fertility is false, it is the ratio

OldAbraham:  I know women wiht narrow hips with many young
Sarah:  aha

guest28:  do not stray…your semen is too precious
OlderAbraham:  My advice to all of you is this.  If you want to meet someone (as for semen), then turn off your computers and walk out the front door
OlderAbraham:  The internet is but another tool of social isolation
OlderAbraham:  Sarah, go to church.  You too, guest28
Gina:  but if you stay here long enough, you will either kill yourself or desperately seek human interaction
Gina:  tough choices
OlderAbraham:  Guest28, I think you should hook up with a strapping red-haired Irish fireman named Shaumus
Gina:  28 is davening now
Gina:  leave her be
Gina:  she needs kavanah
OlderAbraham:  Gina, if you are not married, you too should head out and smile at a man today

Gina:  OK, I will and be thinking of you as I do
Gina:  will smiling get me knocked up?
OlderAbraham:  And for Luke there is Emma.  Already he is preparing his tiny home for her visit, as by excavating a crawlspace beneath his feet
Sarah:  do you enter the conversation luke?
OlderAbraham:  He is aloof.
Gina:  enter gently please
OlderAbraham:  I speak for him
OlderAbraham:  I am the voice of Luke Ford

OlderAbraham:  I am the Alpha and Omega
Sarah:  will we see that on cam
OlderAbraham:  Yes
OlderAbraham:  One day
Gina:  pay per view

Feeling My Age

So three women in their twenties call me Saturday night and invite me to go out with them.

I dress up in my Saturday night finest and after an hour or so of chit chat, they’re ready to hit the bar scene.

"Why are you so quiet?" a friend keeps asking me.

I keep saying I’m fine, but during that hour, I went through the five stages of grief for my youth and concluded that I am almost 42 and bars and clubs are not my scene. I hated them when I was 18 and I hate them even more now.

I hate drugs and I hate alcohol and I hate the pursuit of fun.

It’s not fun for me.

For a few minutes, I had pushed myself to expand my horizons and to party like a blog star, but my heart just wasn’t in it.

"Levi, you’ve got to shave your beard," the girls say when we make our goodbyes. "You look so hot without it. You’ll get much more ass if you shave your beard. All girls except yeshiva girls will prefer you unshaven and yeshiva girls aren’t going to give you ass anyway."

About two months ago, I stopped shaving and I stopped using Grecian Formula.

About 23 years ago, I stopped going to bars (I only went on and off for a few months when I lived in Australia in 1984 after graduating high school, even then I did not drink).

Rabbi Steven Weil To Lead Orthodox Union

Amy Klein writes for the Jewish Journal:

Rabbi Steven Weil, Senior Rabbi of Beth Jacob Congregation in Beverly Hills, has been named executive vice president of the Orthodox Union, which serves as the education, outreach and social service organization for Orthodox synagogues.

The O.U. has been engaged in a year-long search to replace Rabbi Tzvi Weinreb, the current executive vice president, who will finish his term in June 2009.  (He will stay on at the O.U. for three more years).  Weinreb is 68 years old.

The O.U. executive committee considered 150 condidates and on Wednesday evening, April 9, approved Weil, 42, whose  Orthodox synagogue is the largest outside the New York region.  According to an O.U. official, who asked to remain anonymous, Weil is expected to come to the O.U. as early as January 2009; the official said Weil insisted on having enough time to help his synagogue search for a new senior rabbi.

Weil would neither confirm nor deny the reports.

Weil is expected to send out an announcement on the move this weekend to his congregation, which numbers 750 families. The O.U. is expected to officially announce the post on Monday.

The Jewish Press broke this story in its Dec. 8, 2006 edition. From the bima on Saturday morning, Dec. 9, 2006, Rabbi Steven Weil publicly denied its completely accurate report. Luckily for Beth Jacob, people didn’t believe him and the informal search for a new rabbi began.

One thing that is keeping Rabbi Weil in town is that he is being sued by Aaron Biston for battery. SC093458 is the case number in Los Angeles Superior Court. The jury trial is expected to begin Sept. 2 and to last five days.

Should be fun for the whole family.

Who’s The Yossi Sharashefsky Who Provided A Jet For ‘Rescuing’ Isaac Hersh?

He’s a guy who’s withheld a get (Jewish divorce) from his wife for more than a decade. He also married off his daughter while she was still a child.

Here’s more on the Isaac Hersh saga.

Rabbi Sharashefky worked with Rabbi Abraham J. Twerski, Rabbi Dovid Feinstein, and Rabbi Shmuel Kamenetsky on the Isaac Hersh case.

A rabbi writes:

Levi, Not sure how you get the best scoops on these stories (Mordechai Gafni, Isaac Hersh), but your info seems the most complete.

Regarding "Sherry", what we called Yossi as a teenager, here’s the other side of the story that I got from him: He claims that his wife wouldn’t accept the Get, held out for money, and regularly defamed him – including the charge that he was claiming to have had "married off" his under-age daughter – to cover her own perfidy. He says that he was outside the Orthodox "fold" for a couple of years. When he "returned", he married a sweet Orthodox woman (that’s MY assessment after spending a Shabbat with them), moved to a smaller Orthodox community on the East Coast, where he successfully buys, develops and manages real estate. He’s also been involved in building up that community, including helping bring in a kollel (also based on personal knowledge).

I found his story to be very credible, I saw no tell-tale signs of lying, found no contradictions. (The fact that, as the article you reprinted mentioned, "Yossi Sharashefsky…did not have his act validated by a religious court, as Israel Goldstein did", would also seem to indicate that he either never claimed to have married off his daughter, or only claimed it privately to his ex-wife and/or her family to cause them pain during the bitter divorce.)

Either way, he seems to have straightened his life out – he would say because he was always innocent, others might view this as a "whitewash" – and it would seem unfair to spin this as a story of "a rogue helping other rogues," barring other information that establishes a pattern of roguish behavior for Yossi that extends to this decade.

Debra Nussbaum Cohen writes June 30, 1995 for the Jewish Telegraphic Agency:

NEW YORK — In a dramatic ruling seemingly from beyond the grave, one of the world’s foremost experts on Jewish law has declared that a young girl whose father secretly married her off is free from the vows her father made.

Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Auerbach, one of the few halachic leaders who could claim authority in almost every corner of the Orthodox Jewish world, died in February 1995.

But in August, several months before he died, he ruled that Sarah Leah Goldstein is not bound by her marriage, and therefore doesn’t need a Jewish divorce, because her father had not produced the witnesses necessary to legitimize his vow.

Sarah’s father, Israel Goldstein, of the Borough Park section of Brooklyn, N.Y., had in 1993 revived a long-unused practice called kedusha ketana, in which a man acts as his minor daughter’s proxy and marries her off.

Goldstein’s act, believed to be the first malevolent use of kedusha ketana, was an effort to punish his estranged wife, sources say. His wife has been trying to obtain a get, or Jewish divorce decree, from Goldstein for five years.

Goldstein, who married off his daughter when she was 11, has refused to name the groom and the two male witnesses required to make a marriage legal.

Word of Auerbach’s ruling comes as other Orthodox authorities, including the Council of Torah Sages of the ultra-religious Agudath Israel of America, have been issuing statements strongly condemning the practice.

At the same time, Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes is considering whether to bring charges against Israel Goldstein for endangering the welfare of a minor. Gita Goldstein, Sarah’s mother, is also considering filing a civil case against him.

In all the outcry, Auerbach was the first widely respected authority to have found a way within halachah, or Jewish law, to invalidate such unions.

His decision is expected to nullify the acts of any men similarly marrying off their daughters and to deter those considering such a step.

"It’s a terrible, terrible weapon that’s been destroyed" with the Auerbach ruling, said Rabbi Eliahu Rominek of Queens, N.Y., a Torah scholar who brought the Goldstein case to Auerbach’s attention last August and authored the legal response that Auerbach approved.

"There are a lot of men waiting in the wings, waiting to see how this plays out, to decide if they’ll do it to their daughters," said Rominek in a telephone interview from his yeshiva in Far Rockaway.

"If Goldstein would be successful" in making his young daughter a married woman, "you’d have an avalanche here" of similar cases, he said.

A representative of a secretive group that calls itself the Sholom Bayis Organization said the group has distributed hundreds of copies of a booklet called "The Kedusha Ketana Handbook," explaining how fathers can marry off their daughters.

The group intends to distribute a total of 10,000 copies, said the representative, a man named Yossi who refused to give his last name.

So far, besides Goldstein’s, there is only one other publicly known case of kedusha ketana in the last few years — that of Suri and Yossi Sharashefsky’s daughter in Brooklyn. Yossi Sharashefsky, however, did not have his act validated by a religious court, as Israel Goldstein did. Several Orthodox rabbis, therefore, have said they do not consider it to be as serious a concern as the Goldstein case.

Other such marriages are rumored to have taken place, though no names have been connected to them.

Gita Goldstein, who learned of the Auerbach ruling through a reporter this week, said, "I am relieved, so relieved. This is like an enormous weight is off me." She added, however, "It’s not finished, because people could still question the validity."

A. David Stern, a New York attorney representing Goldstein in two efforts to bring charges against her husband, shared her concerns. "It’s a wonderful step forward," he said, "but I don’t know whether it will be accepted by the whole Jewish world."

Added Stern, who is Orthodox: "I’m concerned that premature elation could be damaging because someone could say, `It looks like it’s solved, let’s not get involved,’ and all of it will fall through."

Goldstein said her daughter is also happy that the whole thing is over, though "it’s very hard for her to understand this. I try not to go into it too much with her because it’s so strange and painful."

Goldstein has sole custody of both her daughter and her son, David Aron, who is 10, because her husband did not ask for custody or visitation or show up for any of their custody hearings, she said.

Attempts to reach Israel Goldstein were unsuccessful.

It was Gita Goldstein’s efforts to free her daughter from the marriage that prompted Auerbach’s ruling. Goldstein contacted two Montreal rabbis, who turned to Torah scholar Rominek for help in May 1994.

Rominek researched the issue, wrote up a teshuvah, or Jewish legal response, then asked leading rabbinic authorities in Jerusalem to rule on the issue. "I realized that the only way this could have significance was if I had their backing," said Rominek.

All but Auerbach declined to address the issue, he said. The posek, or decider of Jewish law, studied for a week and, according to Rominek, told him on Aug. 7, 1994 that the girl is not bound to the marriage.

Auerbach told Rominek to inform the Montreal community about his decision and to have anyone who questioned it call him in Jerusalem. Rominek said he told the Montreal rabbis but they did not spread the word. Several months later Auerbach died.

When the issue of kedusha ketana became a widespread concern in the Orthodox world, after the Jewish Telegraphic Agency reported on it May 16, Rominek began again checking into the matter. He found that Auerbach had not put the decision in writing, nor signed Rominek’s response. Concerned that some in the Orthodox world would question the validity of the sage’s position, he lined up other prominent authorities to verify Auerbach’s position.

Auerbach’s secretary, Rabbi Elimelech Cooperman, and son, Rabbi Baruch Auerbach, are publicly attesting to Auerbach’s position, according to Rabbi Gedalia Dov Schwartz, who is publicizing the teshuvah.

Schwartz is the head of the religious court connected to the Rabbinical Council of America, the largest Orthodox rabbinical association in America.

Two other prominent rabbis — Zalman Nehemia Goldberg, Auerbach’s son-in-law and a judge on the Jerusalem Beit Din (religious court), and Moshe Sternbuch, a member of the ultra-religious community — concurred with Auerbach’s halachic position about kedusha ketana.

They have written their own treatises on the topic, Schwartz said.

Rominek said he feels confident that Auerbach’s decision will not only free Sarah Leah Goldstein from a life of misery, but that it will also deter other men from trying the same thing.

"I expect it to be authoritative throughout the frum [religious] world," he said. "You’ll always have some people griping, but overwhelmingly, it will be received with great joy and confidence."

Neither A Pupil Nor A Friend

That’s going to be the title of my next memoir.

If you want the back story to this phrase from Dennis Prager, read this.

Sorry, Dennis, but I’m making a withdrawal from my moral bank account.

No ATM fees!

Let the healing begin!

A friend calls and intones "Neither a friend nor a pupil. We should make a Hard Rock song of that and perform it at the kibbutz room at Cantor’s Deli. You’ll play drums. Another song — The Nine Questions People Ask About Judaism. We’ll go through a whole list of questions. Is your cock cut or not? I’ve got eight more questions, motherf——! Is treasure buried under your bed, you Jew? I’ve got seven more questions."

Luke: "How about, ‘Why the Jews? The Reason for Anti-Semitism.’"

Friend: "That’ll be another one. That’ll be our love song like on Lite FM. ‘Why the Jews? They said you poisoned the well. The only thing you ever poisoned was my heart.’

"He’ll be like the Barry Gordie (the founder Motown Records) of our little empire. We’ll be the Supremes to his Barry Gordie."

"I see the headline: ‘Neither a pupil nor a friend accused of check kiting in moral bank account scandal!’"
