‘The Sex.Com Chronicles: A White-Hat Lawyer’s Journey to the Dark Side of the Internet’ by Charles Carreon

We talk by phone March 25, 2009.

Luke: "Charles, why did you write this book?"

Charles: "I’ve always wanted to be a writer. It was the first thing that happened to me that I thought a large number of people would be interested in hearing about."

Luke: "Tell me about the journey to writing this."

Charles: "The whole time Kremen vs. Cohen was happening, I was well aware it was not an ordinary event. There were just too many weird things happening. In the first place, there was no reason why I would end up representing a person with a case as important as sex.com except that no other lawyer wanted to work on it.

"Fate chose me to work with Gary on recovering the domain.

"As a lawyer, you are usually billing as you go along… You end up with detailed notes on all the events…

"I ended up writing the book as a result of my partnership with Gary [Kremen] not working out and I found myself fired about two months after I had won the case. I ended up litigating with Gary and every time I worked on my case, I had to think about him. It wasn’t particularly pleasant.

"After I had written up a few chapters, I decided to seek an agent and ended up with Theron Raines, who had represented Bruno Bettelheim, Winston Broom (author of Forest Gump), James Dickey (Deliverance)… I was thrilled. I wrote what turned out to be the first 36 chapters to see if Theron could get me a book contract, which he was pretty optimistic about. He sent it around. He got a nice stack of great rejection letters and he called it the best book he couldn’t sell.

"I laid off it for a while. Two years elapsed.

"It took three years to resolve the case with Gary. We settled. I had more time on my hands. I had money in my bank account and I had this huge experience I needed to process. I went back to it. The end of the book was much harder to write than the beginning. It was like doing surgery on myself."

"I wanted to show how a lawsuit to recover stolen assets works."

Luke: "I’m thinking back to my involvement with this story."

Charles laughs. "No kidding."

Luke: "I met Stephen Michael Cohen in January 1999. He gave me his business card which read sex.com. I said, how long have you had sex.com? He said since 1979. I said, have domain names been around that long? He gave me some smooth information that left me befuddled. I interviewed him in May of 1999 and got his unbelievable story. Then I interviewed Ron Levi (most powerful man in online porn). Then [Carreon’s assistant attorney] Sue Whatley came my way. We became best friends… Sue was the pipeline to what was going on."

Charles: "I never spoke with you until after the case happened…after the whole debacle with Gary."

"Sue found her metier. For a person born in Sweetholm, Oregon, and who weighed about 130 pounds more than your average sex kitten, she did a pretty good job of working the industry for all it was worth. She definitely gave us the line on what was going on.

"I read everything you wrote about it and commented on it in the book."

Luke: "We’ve been acquainted for a decade but only met in person twice and spoken on the phone a handful of times."

"I can’t believe you and Gary gave sex.com to this guy [Yishai Habari] who was mobbed up."

Charles: "I was the classic case of the guy who lands a fish so big that it sinks his boat. I had no idea what I was doing. I was simply focused on it from a technical point of view, to wrest the domain away from the man who stole it. I left it to Gary and Sue to figure out what we would do with it. I had not the first idea about what the industry had as its first profit model. When we finally had control of the domain, the power shifted entirely to people who had knowledge such as Gary. He said, let’s just have Yishai Habari do it.

"According to Steve Cohen, he was already in business with Yishai. To stay with Steve Cohen’s partner… Yishai was instantly making 15%. That was my share. I had to work for 20 months and take a big flyer on the whole thing."

"After a day spent with Yishai and his partners, I felt terrible. And it did not let up. There was something I couldn’t get over and I just went into an obsessive spiral about getting out of business Yishai Habari."

Luke: "I was writing this on my website at the time that this guy is mobbed up. I wasn’t just whispering it to people."

Charles: "I actually was not informed about it. I did not find out until two years later when his partner Richard Martino was convicted of looting that phone company in the Midwest. It was not until then that I had hard knowledge about the mob connections of the people we had just been in bed with."

"After Gary and I settled our case, I was walking around with him at his new facility in the Castro district [of San Francisco], and I said, ‘Gary, did you know that Yishai was working with the Mafia? If you did, you could’ve told me. It might have made a big difference in our relationship.’ And he just looked at me with gentle disdain… If you don’t know something that important, you’ve violated Yogi Berra’s rule of not getting involved in a game where you don’t know the rules.

"It became clear to me that he knew a heckuva lot more about what was going on with Yishai and Richard Martino and Crescent Communications than I ever had.

"I just had an instinct to get out and I haven’t regretted it.

"A lot of time I’ve thought, all you had to do was keep your mouth shut, go to Tahiti, collected your $50,000 a month, and just stop. I couldn’t do it. I did not want that role in life. I did not want to be harvesting money in that way.

"I’ve kept working for people in the industry but over time entirely with people I like and respect. I work for BrandiLove.com. She’s a really decent person. They have the whole swinger lifestyle. I’m not a swinger but I totally respect it. I’ve seen many other models for generating money in Adult that I can’t respect. Those operators know that about me and so I never get any work from them."

Luke: "You represented Steve Sweet. You were with him visiting Max Hardcore when Steve got a call that made him turn pale. His whole operation had been raided.

"And then it says [in the book] that you got out of Adult. What happened?"

Charles: "When it came to the criminal matter, I was in no position to help him. He needed a Canadian lawyer. He got one who eventually got him a complete acquittal."

"To be there agenting a deal between Steve and Paul F. Little [Max Hardcore] was something that gave me pause. I asked myself, ‘Can money be this important?’ The answer just hung in the air. No, it isn’t. Steve’s phone rang and it was clear that my 15 minutes of shame was about to come to an end."

Luke: "One thing I love about the book is that you display zero agenda in it beyond telling the story. This is not a book to exculpate Charles Carreon from any mistakes he’s made. It’s not a book to praise or damn [anyone]."

Charles: "The hardest part was not to come out the victor. See, I can’t even say, ‘The Loser!’ And I won’t. The experience was, ‘I am a loser.’ That’s what it felt like. Like, damn, I’ve just ruined the whole book. Why couldn’t I have just sat on top and grinned? Then the book could be all positive and end on a high note.

"And then as I worked on it, I realized, there are no good books like that. Those are bad books. Those are crumby Hollywood movies. Real life involves getting too full of yourself and making an ass of yourself, scraping your knee, and then getting up and saying, well, that’s my knee. I’m fine.

"I used my viewpoint but tried not to impose my prejudices.

"One of my favorite times is when I write about how I am in Vancouver and Ben Pipkin (from Wired Solutions) is blazing on E! and he’s raving about how he’s going to testify.

"I’m standing there and I’m sober enough to realize that this does not bode well for me. When your best friend is a rave drug addict swearing eternal loyalty, you’ve got problems.

"Going through a dark patch in your life, you say, ‘How did I end up here?’ And the answer was, I thought money was the answer to everything. I thought that if you had enough gold, you would have no problems.

"And the universe was kind enough to take me to a place where I could meet people who have plenty of money and if money was going to give security, they should feel secure, but they just had a whole new set of problems. One of the biggest problems they had was that nobody was really honest with them… You’re not going to tell yourself the truth. That is not in the nature of human beings. We need other people to tell us the unpleasant truths about ourselves. As it happened, the world came and it told me."

Luke: "Where is Stephen Michael Cohen today?"

Charles: "To the best of my knowledge, the last email I got from Steve, and it was very pleasant, he’s always very pleasant, he said he was in Mazatlan. That he still owned his place down the street from President Fox.

"I absolutely do not know if anything Stephen has ever told me was true."

Luke: "Did Gary recover any money from Cohen aside from his house in San Diego?"

Charles: "Not to my knowledge. I like to be idealistic, but that stops at doing useless things. There are a couple of things I’ve never seen in my career. I’ve never had somebody come up to me and say, ‘I got a great libel verdict.’ And I’ve never had anybody come up to me and say, ‘I’m rich, man. I got my recovery from the bank in Lichtenstein.’ Or, ‘I found the accounts in the Isle of Mann and they’re stuffed and they’re all coming my way.’

"It just doesn’t happen. These offshore scams really work. Right now the United States government is armwrestling with UBS in Switzerland.

"Steve Cohen sat in prison for about 18 months. He had the keys to get out. The person who is in prison for contempt always has the keys for the jail cell. All they have to do is say, ‘I’m ready to talk.’ He never once said, ‘I’m ready to talk.’

"How many people have managed to jail their adversary for well over a year and have the person sit there and say, ‘Screw you!’

"That is one tough dude."

"Cohen was partners with Yishai. When we got sex.com, Ron Levi was buying at least $50,000 a month in traffic from sex.com through a strawman, it seemed highly likely to me that Cohen, being the clever guy he is, said to Ron Levi and Seth Warshavsky (no paragon of virtue), ‘Let’s show this Kremen guy how we screw people over. You go and promise you will hire lawyers for him. You hire lawyers who will throw the fight. I will give you all the traffic you need to pay the legal fees you pay to those lawyers.’

"That’s my theory for why Ron paid for Gary’s representation. As I said in the book, I have never seen anyone give up a case who didn’t have a drug problem like Katie Diemer was doing. It was at that point that I stepped into the case. There was a motion to dismiss pending. If you don’t file an opposition to a motion to dismiss, you lose.

"Katie Diemer appeared to be a rational, intelligent, capable lawyer. I did not understand why she was throwing the fight.

"Ron was amazingly accommodating. The story had always been that he had put $150,000 into the defense and if Gary won, he was going to come around and try to collect. In no way did he do so. Gary was always afraid of it but it didn’t happen.

"Ron put a great deal on the table, not the best deal available, but $450,000 a month and 40% of the additional revenue to be generated."

Luke: "And the great thing about Ron Levi is if he offers you that deal, he’s a man of his word."

Charles: "Yeah. He had it all written up in a three-page contract and handed it to us. It all looked fine to me.

"There wasn’t any hope of doing it. Sex.com exerted a fascination like the one ring in The Lord of the Rings.

"There’s a deep deep myth about a word that will make you incalculably wealthy. That’s what captured me and Gary.

"When we started out, I thought Gary shared my ideal that w would get hold of the word and we would transform its energy and make it into something decent. I thought there was more money in it. I was disappointed when Gary showed no interest in pursuing that avenue of commerce."

"We could’ve had an appointment with anyone we wanted to in the world of publishing. We had an appointment with Benedikt Taschen. There’s a guy who made a fortune who has a real passion for erotic art. I felt that avenue of decent reasonable erotic expression had a lot of potential.

"What did Ron Levi have? They called him Fantasy Man. He may not be a man of tremendous style, but he did know how to weave that out. His sites took advantage of the visual power of the medium. During Gary’s tenure at sex.com, it was possibly one of the least interesting adult sites on the web."

Did I Join A Cult And Not Even Know It?

For the past three months, I have been 100% enthusiastic about Kundilini Yoga.

Don’t think my emotions had no foundation in fact. I read the Wikipedia entry on Yogi Bhajan and at the time it only contained neutral or positive descriptions of his life.

This afternoon, however, I read some devastating reports on Kundilini Yoga.

I feel like I joined a cult and did not even known it. (Yogi Bhajan and Shlomo Carlebach taught together.)

Wait, ten days ago I felt uncomfortable with all the celebrations for Guru Singh‘s 64th birthday.

The room was packed even before class was to begin.

OK, not so creepy.

There were streamers and balloons to celebrate the Guru’s birthday.

As a straight man, I am not into this.

Before the Guru entered the room, a teacher led us in a warm-up meditation and had us practice a song to sing when the Guru walked in.

Now I’m starting to feel uncomfortable. After all, a manly man does not celebrate another man’s birthday. A manly man only celebrates the birthday of the woman he’s sleeping with.

But this is LA and maybe the mores are different.

So the Guru walked in just after 7pm and the room went wild.

This is a little creepy because he’s just a bloke having a birthday and who cares about a bloke having a birthday except his mommy and his sisters and the woman he’s doing. Only these women should care about his birthday.

So we had a wonderful class of yoga. I was surrounded by beautiful women. All good.

Then after class, a bunch of people went to hug the Guru and the Guru takes care to only hug wives when he hugs them together with their husbands, after all he’s a Guru and very holy, and then the Guru danced with us and he had such a happy pure smile on his face and he’s just so full of love that even a manly man such as myself was not unmoved.

Then there were cake and cookies even though it was all vegetarian, I abstained because my standards of kashrut are just that high, bitch.

This woman (Kamlapadi Kaur Khalsa) was a member of Yogi Bhajan’s group for 20 years. Then she left and eventually wrote this devastating essay:

Yogi [Bhajan] was a master of Tantric Yoga, which is another way to say that he was a master of sex. Within the Tantric tradition of India and Tibet, it is recognized that sexual energy, is in fact, the same substance as spiritual energy. Yogi [Bhajan’s] students were encouraged to marry and explore this energy within the boundaries of monogamous relationships. Extra-marital sex and pre-marital sex were taboo within our cult. When affairs did happen among us the whole cult community was deeply shocked and strongly titillated. Had Yogi [Bhajan’s] harem ever come fully to light over the years, the cult would have instantly blown up and destroyed itself. Such is the power of sex. No other misconduct that Yogi [Bhajan] pursued was anywhere near as threatening to [his] position and lifestyle as his sexual activities. Yogi [Bhajan’s] greatest challenge, therefore, was not only to seduce supposedly spiritually committed women into his bed (not all that difficult perhaps), but to keep them quiet about it for over twenty years. Now that takes some pretty strong magic indeed!

Yogi [Bhajan] kept his affairs secret from the cult-at-large by hiding them right out in the open, under our noses. This was, in fact, how he concealed all his unrighteous activities. He was always telling us that he was a crook and not to be trusted, but in light of all the fantastic yoga sets and mind blowing meditations he was teaching us, we just didn’t believe him. As for sex, it was part of the mythology that swirled around him that Yogi [Bhajan] needed very little sleep. Therefore, somehow, it didn’t seem strange to us that he would lock himself into a bedroom each night with one of his many "secretaries". After all, who knew when he might need to give a bit of dictation?

Once when Yogi [Bhajan] was visiting one of the ashrams that I lived in, I was up and awake in the middle of the night nursing my newborn baby. Right over my head, in Yogi [Bhajan’s] bedroom upstairs, I clearly heard the rather unmistakable sounds of heavy breathing and bed pounding copulation, but I interpreted the sounds to mean that Yogi [Bhajan] was doing a strenuous yoga set. At that time the implications of what I was hearing were just too intense and devastating for me to compute, so my mind simply fogged over.

The ways in which Yogi [Bhajan] controlled his mistresses were the same time-honored ways that men have been attempting to control women throughout history. As long as they played their roles devotedly, Yogi [Bhajan’s] women were given a great deal of status, political power within the organization, financial security and lots of cool jewelry. If they stepped out of line, however, they were shamed and their life support systems were threatened. At the most mundane level, Yogi [Bhajan’s] secretaries all signed secrecy contracts before they took their jobs and if they left the cult they knew that they were in potential danger from [his] goons–were they to spill the beans. In truth most of Yogi [Bhajan’s] women loved being part of the elite few, the inner circle, who knew all the powerful secrets that they believed we average, more stupid students would not have understood or have been capable of handling.

As well as all these normal methods of coercion, Yogi [Bhajan] was a master at keeping those around him completely stressed out and busy running around dealing with one manufactured crisis after another. Yogi [Bhajan’s] women, as well as the men in the inner circle, never knew when [his] wrath might fall about their heads for no reason at all. The fact that the content of Yogi [Bhajan’s] public humiliation sessions usually focused on the deep seated, real or fabricated, psychological problems of his victims, made [his] inner circle a rather desperate bunch of Yogi pleasers. Needless to add, [his] secretaries were also extremely competitive towards each other and unlike the women in the rest of the cult they did not bond well with others of their sex.

A FORMER MEMBER OF 3HO WRITES:

"Everybody who is in 3HO is going to be a [yoga] teacher, period. Whether you like it or you don’t. Either you will ultimately end up a teacher or you will leave us". Yogi Bhajan, Winter Solstice–1973

The 1998 Gal Research Group listed 3HO’s description of themselves as follows:

"Students and teachers of Kundalini Yoga, which includes all types of yoga, who practice the 3HO way of lifestyle as taught by Yogi Bhajan".

Kundalini Yoga teacher training is the flagship of recruitment and product for the 3HO ("Happy, Healthy, Holy Organization"). The organizational publication "The Science of Keeping Up" (Vol.1) Editor Shakti Parwha Khalsa states that–"3HO is a teacher training organization".

RECRUITMENT–Step One (It’s the classes stupid)

3HO recruiting begins with people taking Kundalini Yoga classes at centers or ashrams. Charismatic ashram teachers influence the students. These teachers advise–practice Kundalini Yoga daily, chant to still the mind, and use the teachings of Yogi Bhajan as a means to become more positive and have more energy. They are urged to feel the "experience" and use the "technology" of Kundalini Yoga.

Kundalini Yoga teachers may make claims, like these posted on the Internet and attributed to Ravi Singh Khalsa–"Introduction to Kundalini Yoga". This includes a "…list of the general benefits of Kundalini Yoga not only to wet your appetite, but to get you thinking along certain lines". He concludes–"You may never have considered that any exercise or self-help system could be so comprehensive or profound".

Such claims begin 3HO’s "thinking along certain lines" to mold the minds of many unsuspecting Yoga students that come to classes.

Khunrum emails me from Cambodia: "My thought is the article is too long to read right now. Do you feel like a cult person? Do you bang a drum and hand out leaflets at the airport?"

Chaim Amalek emails: "You joined a cult years ago and didn’t even know it."

Fred emails: "On the bright side, if you did join a cult, at least you had no money for the cult leader to steal. BTW, if you did join a cult, who is the cult leader? Who are the other cult members? Is there a cult leader to whom you are slavishly devoted?"

When Alexander Technique Clashes With Kundalini Yoga

I just completed my twelfth week of training to become a teacher of Alexander Technique (AT). I am one-ninth of my way through the program.

I heard today from a great AT guru that I have "sensitive kinesthesia."

My knowledge of the Technique and my knowledge of yoga are shallow, which is why I have not seen serious clashes between these two practices.

Until today.

I met a woman this week whose neck was not her own. She’s had multiple surgeries and had stuff implanted into her neck and as a result she has to be very careful not to strain it.

Prior to surgery, she was an avid practicioner of Kundalini Yoga. After the surgery, she said she had to cut it out because it put too much strain on the neck.

I didn’t think much when she said this. I was a little miffed that she couldn’t join me at yoga class but I moved on with my life.

This was stupid of me because one of the main precepts of Alexander Technique is avoiding strain to the neck. Anything forbidden to this woman because of the strain it places on her neck is forbidden to me too.

I have my priorities. I have 20 years and most of my sense of self invested in Orthodox Judaism so it comes first in my life. I have about $5,000 invested in Alexander Technique, so it comes second in my life. I have $1,000 invested in yoga, which is about one-fifth of what I have spent on my car in the past year, so it comes fourth (being a kind and good person is in my top ten!).

So when yoga and the Technique clash, I side with the Technique because I spend more money on it.

Can’t get fairer than that.

Today at Alexander Technique training, I asked my teachers what they thought of "Breath of Fire" — a rapid breathing technique in Kundalini Yoga. Breath work is a big part of this discipline.

The teachers had me sit on the floor and do some "breath of fire."

They noticed that when I did it, I constricted my neck and hunched my shoulders and did other things completely against the teachings of F.M. Alexander.

One teacher mentioned a famous Alexander Technique instructor who recommended against all forms of breath work.

I did a couple of yoga poses that troubled me and my A.T. teachers pointed out how these poses tightened my neck and constricted my back and chest (very bad things in the Alexander world).

One teacher said that when I have better use, I might be able to do more yoga stuff without hurting myself, but at my current level of Alexander Technique expertise, such yoga meant trouble for me.

I found this shocking. After twelve weeks of three hours a day of rigorous performance of the Technique, sometimes I feel like I’m going to burst I’m pushing so hard, I was appalled to find that I am not yet regarded as a master.

This useism is just the latest example of white male cultural imperialism. It damaged my self-esteem which in turn shortened my neck and back and caused me to narrow my shoulders and gulp for air like the most primitive Aboriginee.

When I went to yoga class today, I skipped all the breath work. I skipped the poses that weren’t kosher according to F.M. Alexander. And I skipped all the stuff that was forbidden by Orthodox Judaism.

As a result, I lay on my mat for an hour and listened to the gongs inside and outside of my head.

That is all that’s left to me after I pay complete obeisance to Moses and Alexander (and give ol’ Yogi Bhajan the short stick).

A Beautiful Gift You Can Give Those You Care About

One trait about many people in my life that I have hated was their closedness to learning anything from me.

I love it when people I love share my interests. It makes me feel closer to them.

I want to develop this ability of mine to join other people in their interests.

It is a powerful feeling when you open yourself up to others and sharing in their joys.

I read this great blog post on Slate:

I was struck by a phrase in a description of Nabatov, a hero in Resurrection.

Nabatov is a peasant who got a high-school education because of his exceptional talents. He didn’t go to the university, however, because he wanted to “go among the people and enlighten his neglected brethren.” He took up various positions, and each time was arrested for trying to organize the peasants, and ultimately he was exiled. Tolstoy extols his virtues:

As a peasant he was industrious, observant, and clever at his work; he was also naturally self-controlled, polite without any effort, and attentive not only to the wishes but also to the opinions of others. His widowed mother, an illiterate, superstitious old peasant woman, was still living, and Nabatov helped her, and used to visit her when he was free. During the time he spent at home he entered into all the interests of his mother’s life, helped her in her work, continued his intercourse with former playfellows, smoking in their company cheap tobacco in ‘dog’s-foot cigarettes,’ took part in their fisticuffs, and explained to them how they were all being deceived by the State and how they ought to disentangle themselves from the deception they were kept in.

The phrase that caught my attention in this description is that Nabatov “entered into all the interest of his mother’s life.” It occurs to me that when you think of people getting along harmoniouslywhether in a family, or among friends, or in an officepeople make an effort to enter into the interests of each other’s lives.

Presumably Nabatov wasn’t much interested in the things that interested his “illiterate, superstitious old peasant” mother. I’m not much interested in Hannah Montana, which interests my older daughter. My husband isn’t much interested in why I think all biographers of St. Therese of Lisieux have profoundly misunderstood her.

Not only do people find it difficult to enter into each other’s interests, people also have a strong impulse to be judgmental about other people’s interests. I think someone’s interest in wine is boring. Someone thinks my interest in children’s literature is childish.

When you’re trying to be happier, one issue that frequently arises is: “If I do this, am I being fake? Doesn’t happiness depend on being authentic? If I don’t naturally feel optimistic/positive/interested, why should I pretend?” (See, e.g., whether you should unenthusiastically play your part in a tradition.)

JOE EMAILS: "That’s the beauty of passionate journalism– you can enter other peoples’ interests out of pure curiosity, and not fuss over whether you "like" it or not, which is so boring. And when that curiosity has to do with your own people, it goes that much deeper. Keep entering…your people need you."

Is Yoga Kosher?

Report: Jerusalem – Aware that many observant Jews prefer to stay away from a Hindu-based practice that might smell like idol worship, California native Aviva Schmidt opened what she says is Israel’s "first kosher power yoga studio."

"Yoga is very controversial and it should be," the 31-year old told Anglo File in her Jerusalem studio, sitting on an exercise ball and playing soothing oriental music in the background. "Yoga is based on Eastern tradition and focuses a lot on meditation. Different positions are worshipping different idols, which goes against Judaism. So I keep it very pareve: for example, I don’t say the names of the positions, there is no chanting, no ohming. I do focus on the breathing, as this is very important in yoga, but any kind of eastern philosophy stays outside."

As there are countless variations of yoga – just as there are many different streams of Judaism – there is no easy answer to the question whether yoga needs to be purged of its spiritual elements to be considered "kosher."

Chaim Amalek emails: You want to do yoga because it makes you happy. You also want to be regarded as a Torah Jew, which (especially given your status as a convert with dubious bona fides) is not doable if you are chanting the names of various Hindu idols whilst contorting yourself into a pretzel (that being forbidden under rabbinical Judaism because it could lead to mixed dancing). The solution? Borrow from the Hasidim, and substitute the names of the various great Hasidic Rabbis of old for those of your new yoga idols. That way, not only would you be better able to pretend to be a Jew, you would be positioning yourself to open up a chain of yoga studios that even Hasidic women would be comfortable in, places where a man (yes, there will be a barrier between the sexes) could be a torah Jew even while secretly pining for the world of the Hindu Sex Goddesses of your new faith.

Remember, in Judaism it is what you do, not what you believe, that counts.

Looking For Love

I was telling a friend about this great woman I met and the plans I was drawing up for our lives.

"Gonna make her wear a blonde wig and pretend she’s dying?" he asks.

Will Immigration Policy Change Under Obama?

FROM CIS.org: WASHINGTON (March 26, 2009) – The current administration has begun work on re-shaping the way the Department of Homeland Security will carry out its mission. Various programs, such as REAL ID, E-Verify, and the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, will be affected by the decisions made by President Obama and Secretary Napolitano. Whatever direction they set for these programs will inevitably build on the foundations laid by the previous administration.

Janice Kephart, the Center for Immigration Studies’ Director of National Security Policy, looks at these foundations in a new blog posting, “The Shift in U.S. Leadership.” It includes video interviews with former top DHS officials offering insights and predictions on secure IDs. Former DHS Secretary Michael Chertoff, Former DHS Assistant Secretary for Policy Stewart Baker, and DHS Deputy Assistant Secretary for Policy Kathy Kraninger explain how their department safeguarded the nation through various ID programs.

EmpowerTech – A Door To The World For People With Disabilities

When I walked in Wednesday afternoon, they immediately wanted to help me.

HIV is not a death sentence.

Aspergers can be managed.

Being gay is not a choice.

Using the wonders of modern assistive technology, this organization could help me bridge the barriers of normal social interaction and help me achieve a better quality of life, including the ability to communicate, work and participate in recreation.

After much shouting and waving of arms on my part, I finally convinced the staff that while indeed they could help me achieve a semblance of normality, my mission this day was to tell their story to the world.

"Luke Carey Ford," one woman muses, "were you born Jewish?"

"Dress like you’re going to Cathy Seipp’s funeral," a friend advises so before leaving I put on some nice daks, my cleanest tzitzit and the long-sleeved striped beige shirt I wear thrice-a-week to Alexander Technique.

I was just out of two intense hours of therapy where I discovered that I’ve been depressed all my life and fending off my sunken state with yoga, meaningless sex and Orthodox Judaism.

But enough about me, let me tell you about how EmpowerTech offers a broad array of programs that bring modern technology into the lives of people with disabilities.

Jesus knows I’d be pushing a shopping cart down Santa Monica Blvd if it weren’t for the wonders of the personal computer.

Before I stop talking about myself, I’d just like to say that I found EmpowerTech to be just the kind of place where a personality such as mine can bloom.

I talk to Joan Anderson, EmpowerTech‘s executive director. "We have open access on Wednesdays from 3:30 to 6pm. We open up the computer lab to anyone with a disability. They can either come in and check out what we do. They can check out the technology. If they have homework or just want to email. We’re doing a training session on how to blog."

Joan has been on the job for two months. She comes from a background in corporate work. Then after 9/11, she went into non-profits, starting with a small jazz radio station back East.

Joan: "Assistive technology was completely new to me. I don’t have any form of disability."

EmpowerTech was started in 1986 by Mary Ann Glicksman who had a son who had cerebral palsy. She kept encountering roadblocks with the technology. She knew it was out there. With a group of families, she started a computer access center. It blossomed from there.

Every day, EmpowerTech trains students (on Microsoft Office Suite) with all forms of disabilities ranging from autism to blindness, low vision, cerebral palsy, down syndrome, quadriplegics, to people who’ve lost the use of their arms or fingers. After completing the course, the students walking away with a certificate that can help them find work (though many forms of disability are just too much for them to hold down a job).

"We have kids here who are high-functioning autistic and their Excel spreadsheets blow mine away," says Joan. "Their powerpoint presentations are amazing. But they are very comfortable in our situation. There are a few who do work, but it is as stockboys instead of database management which these kids can definitely do.

"We have a fabulous program for the blind and low-vision. There’s assistive technology out there with screenreaders and large print and that kind of stuff. We have Tom here who  is completely blind and Bruce who is partially blind. They teach Microsoft Office, email, the whole suite.

"We go into schools all over LA County. We do assessments for students who need help learning. It can be anything from how they hold their pencils or they need a different environment, i.e., computers. We’re in six immersion schools now in Santa Monica, meaning schools with ‘normal’ kids and kids who need help learning. We’re in there three days a week and go through 350 children a year who we teach assistive technology to."

"There’s nothing like helping a stroke survivor send and receive their first email to their kids back East.

"We also have the Head Mouse. If you’re a quadraplegic and you can’t use your hands, it’s a little dot you put on your forehead and there’s a camera on top of the computer screen and just a movement of the head moves the cursor up and down. We have a couple of kids who come in and use that on Wednesday."

I tried it out and found my neck became exhausted in less than 60 seconds. Before I quit, however, I typed out the words "No way."

Joan used to be the executive director for the American Heart Association and was the chief development officer for another non-profit.  "I wanted to get away from funding for research," says Joan. "It’s very difficult. it’s not tangible. I swore I would never go back.

"Let’s say I’m looking for volunteers or board members or sponsorship, and if somebody is on the fence, I can bring them in here and they can see where their money is going."

Luke: "What does your typical work day consist of?"

Joan: "Everything you can possibly imagine. The nice thing about EmpowerTech is that the program directors know what they’re doing. I don’t need to be involved. I’m not a micromanager.

"You must meet my staff. I can’t brag about them enough because what they do is very difficult. It’s not teaching or training you or I… With their body language and their tone of voice, what they get these kids to accomplish is just amazing. You wish that every school had teachers like my teachers.

"Many many calls for corporate sponsorship, in kind media partnerships, all the marketing and PR is done by me with the help of a couple of volunteers. All the fundraising is done by a development department, which is myself and a grant writer. We get out monthly between ten to twenty grant requests. I go on two meetings a day. Particularly right now, you have to be out there.

"We just started a blog. Tom is blogging.

"We’re part of an AT (Assistive Technology) network. There are about 40 of us, but we were the first assistive technology lab. In the network, we all communicate about what’s out there and what’s coming down the pike. What is the government going to be doing with the tech act. We do have a fee-for-service. Most of our students come from either Westside Regional Center or the Department of Rehab. Due to government cutbacks, they’re also cutting back.

"It makes my job that much more intense. We’re getting creative. I’m used to doing the six figure asks and creating strategic partnerships. I now ask the corporate VPs, how can we help you? What do you need? And vice versa. We’re breaking down some doors but it is very tough."

Which Fictional Characters Does S.E. Cupp Most Identify With?

SE tells me Monday: "That’s a great question. Hmm. This is probably going to sound horrible but I really love Harry Angstrom in Rabbit, Run by John Updike. It’s always been my favorite book. I just identify with his, I think everyone can identify with him in that everyone wants to check out once in a while and just say, ‘I’ve had it with my responsibilities. I’m walking away.’

"No one really has the guts to do it. I certainly don’t. I don’t know that everyone would agree that that’s a brave thing to do, but I thought it was really brave. He made a lot of mistakes but I just identified with him.

"Another one is Meursault in Camus’ The Stranger, another character who has the guts to live the way he wants to live, regardless of society’s disgust at his behavior, at his lack of empathy, his lack of compassion."

Is S.E. Cupp’s Life One Long Episode Of ‘Sex and the City’?

From my Monday interview:

Luke: "Did you watch ‘Sex and the City’ and do you have an opinion on the show?"

SE: "Watched it. Still watch reruns. Love it. Totally love it because it is pure escapism. I can check out. I don’t know how much of it rings true. That’s not why I watch. I’m not one of those people who say, ‘Oh, it’s just like my life’ or, ‘I’ve been in those situations.’ Those situations, I’m proud to say, I have not been in. I don’t think those are women you want to necessarily be like or would you welcome their situations. It’s just fun. I love watching the city in places that I’ve been."
