Shalhevet Could’ve Had Dr. Gil Perl

Here’s a copy of attorney Marc Rohatiner’s resignation letter from the Shalhevet school board. He protested the way school founder and longtime CEO Jerry Friedman made sure that Gil Perl didn’t get a serious interview at the school.

Gil Perl is a superstar in Orthodox Jewish education.

Rabbi Avi Greene was hired instead to run religious education at Shalhevet. He was only 27 at the time. He lasted the term of his contract — three years. Now he has plans for Jewish education that seem ideally suited for difficult economic times.

His time has come.

Shalhevet could’ve had Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz as head of school. They chose Rabbi Elchanan Weinbach instead. He’s there every day. Rabbi Steinsaltz would’ve appointed a representative and flown in to give lectures every couple of months.

Shalhevet is the only Orthodox day school I am aware of where boys and girls hug each routinely in the hallways. Every other school, including the liberal Ramaz in Manhattan (with atrocious Jewish education and superb secular education) and Ida Crown Jewish Academy in Chicago (with weak Jewish education, but the strongest that the parents will put up with), discourages this. It’s not the Orthodox way.

The best critique of the type of Lawrence Kohlberg-inspired moral thinking taught at Shalhevet was in the satirical newspaper The Burning Joint, which came out more than two years ago. It had a cogent well-argued three pages on the topic. More than 90% of the contents of this paper was dead-on accurate, according to my sources.

That there has been no follow-up issue is a serious loss to Jewish journalism.

“There are certain things that an Orthodox school can not have a discussion about,” says an Orthodox dissenter with Shalhevet. “You can’t have a discussion about whether to keep Shabbos or not. You keep Shabbos or don’t keep Shabbos, but you don’t have a townhall discussion over it at an Orthodox school. What kind of Orthodox school allows secular teachers the same vote as rabbis? How are they allowed to speak with as much authority?

“Shalhevet had a townhall meeting on Proposition Eight (against same-sex marriage), with secular teachers speaking with as much authority as religious teachers. In the Talmudic tractate Chullin 92A-B, it says there were three good things about the Romans, and one of them was that they did not marry two men. The Jewish tradition is clear about same-sex marriage though whether religious views on the sanctity of marriage should be enforced through secular law is an open question, you can make a case against that.”

At least that’s the story they tell there.

I have also heard complaints from some women in Boston about this Mechitza.

It is also worth noting that when I davened there weekday mornings in the early 2000’s, The Rebbe zt”l used to do much of his davening in the late Rebbetzin’s seat in the front of the ezras nashim. He this even though there were occasionaly women sitting right behind him!

    Sex and the Sages

I have a girl who took this course. It’s really paid off for us. She often pauses and says, “Rabbi Lookstein teaches…” Or, “I wonder what Rabbi Lookstein would say about this?” Or, “I remember in Rabbi Lookstein’s class, I learned that…”

    Very helpful.

    Good ol’ Rabbi Lookstein.

    From The New York Times:

Nearing his ninth decade, formal in vested suit and cufflinks, Rabbi Haskel Lookstein strode purposefully into a classroom of Ramaz High School on Manhattan

What Do I Want A Girl For?

First, I want a girl to save my life. Remember when we were driving north on the Pacific Coast Highway Nov. 8? I passed a car and was steaming ahead, not realizing I was in the lane for the southbound traffic. A car was approaching and I did not think about it. You tapped the dashboard on the right and said, “Move over right now.”

And I did. And then I realized what had happened. You had saved my life.

I’m blind in a lot of ways. I say and do a lot of risky and self-defeating and dangerous things. I need help.

Imagine you’re in Commanche country and dozens of Commanches have surrounded you and they want to take your scalp and rape you and leave you dead. If you are one person, you’re always going to have your back turned on some Commanches. But if there are two of you, each one of you can cover 180 degrees of Commanches.

That’s what a relationship is about. You each take 180 degrees of Commanches and protect each other from getting scalped and raped.

Also, once you’re a twosome, it’s easier to bond with others and with a community. Once you have a girl, people assume you have higher value, that you’ve proven your worth to someone, and so they take you more seriously. You bond with others and they can help you with blind spots that neither of you can see.

I have a lot of self-destructive tendencies. I do an average job of taking care of myself. Before you came into my life, my life was not a total mess. My hovel was not a total mess. It was moderately clean. But now things are better.

You have self-destructive tendencies. I can help you with those. A couple has each other to mitigate self-destructive tendencies.

Girlies are good social proof. They prove to others you have value. Nothing like having a hot chick on your arm when you go to shul. And HaShem takes your prayers more seriously when you gots a sheila. He says, “Whenever two people cry out my name, I dwell among them.”

Girlies are good for cooking and cleaning and general maintenance. You helped me clean up the hovel.

Girlies take you places. You took me to the opera and to that play about the Los Angeles river. You introduced me to a dozen of your friends and they were really cool. Girlies show me more of life.

Girlies point out things that I would otherwise miss. Particularly in social interactions. I miss a lot. A girl can fill you in on what is really going on.

Girlies take the world you have and they make it deeper and richer and more exciting. They point out nuances and shades and things you’re missing.

Girlies bring out stuff inside of you that you’re barely conscious of. They make you grow.

Girlies challenge you. They help you get your game together and take it to the next level.

Girlies are good for inspiring your writing.

Girlies smell good. They’re cute and cuddly. They’re softer than guys. They dress better. Girlies are like visiting a foreign country. They speak a different language.

Girlies are delicious when they’re not being all moody. Moody is fine except for when you become the object of their wrath.

None Of The Stimulus Helps Me

I’m tired of all these government bailouts of other people. Extending unemployment benefits? Doesn’t help me. I’ve worked for myself the past 12 years.

I don’t want a bailout. I’m just sick of people lining up at the government trough to get some.

I don’t work for the government. I don’t get to average the $71,000 a year that federal employees get.

I’ve not found government employees to be happy people. It seems to be work that generally sucks the soul.

I pay for my own health insurance — $340 a month to Kaiser. Then I go outside of Kaiser to get superb physical therapy at $200 a session and I get acupuncture ($35 a session from interns, the herbs cost about $40 extra a week).

Women Don’t Like Jokes About Getting Married

I’ve never known a girlfriend who enjoyed me making jokes about marrying her, making pretend offers to marry her. They never laughed. They never found it funny.

As soon as you can laugh about something, it means it’s not a big deal. As soon as a society starts making jokes about adultery, it means that adultery is not such a big deal.

Jewish humor didn’t develop until the Enlightenment and it chiefly developed among secular Jews. Orthodox Jews who are funny do it, I think, out of an internalization of our society’s secular-religious split (that there is a place for religion and a place to keep religion out such as the public square). The more religious the Jew, in my experience, the least likely he is to be funny. The funniest Jews are overwhelmingly the most secular. They are the most fearless. They don’t have whole swathes of life that are off-limits to humor because of holiness concerns.

I think the Talmud says something about everyone knows what happens on a wedding night between the newly married couple, but anyone who makes jokes about it does not go to the world to come.

I think the more secular I am, the funnier my writing is. The more religious I am, the less funny. It is much harder for me to make jokes about Judaism when I’m taking it most seriously.

When I’ve talked about marriage with my girlfriends, they’ve usually said something like, “I don’t believe in marriage.”

I believe they’re publicly denying the one thing they want most because their desire for it is so painfully strong, they can’t face it, so they have to deny it.

I told this girl recently that at my reading: “Is it OK if I get down on my knees tonight at the Workmen’s Circle and ask you to make me the happiest man in the world?”

She replied: “You want me to ‘make you happy’ in front of all those people? I didn’t think this was performance art.”

Beth: You’re right about women who claim not to want to marry. I think at least 80% of them are completely full of it. I was with my ex boyfriend for 9 years. He said he didn’t know if we would ever want to get married, so I said I didn’t, either. So after spending my entire 20’s with him, he dumps me for a teenager and marries her. Lesson learned. After that fiasco I determined that the next guy was going to be marriage-minded.

    Merry Christmas Goyim!

    I’m live on my cam:

    YourMoralLeader: merry xmas
    YourMoralLeader: goyim
    Emma: Happy hanukkah?
YourMoralLeader: what does Xmas mean to you M and Beth?
    Emma: Family getting together
Emma: The day Jesus was born
Beth: I had to step away and Luke laid the smack down on some guy.
YourMoralLeader: does your family get together and celebrate the day I was born M?
YourMoralLeader: i banned a bloke hassling beth
YourMoralLeader: what are the rituals for Luke’s Bday in M’s home?
Beth: Christmas means family, giving and receiving, good food and bad traffic.
YourMoralLeader: study selections from my blog
YourMoralLeader: sing songs in praise of the Leader
Emma: We sit around the table and study your books.
    Emma: laughing quietly.
Beth: Really? Luke’s books make me cry loudly.

Chaim Amalek emails: I’m not a big fan of it because:
    1. Few fertile females show up these days. (For many months Emma was all that kept it going.)
    2. A web cam in which you merely sit there, typing or reading is insulting to everyone who shows up. I mean, what’s the point of calling readers to that?
    3. It depresses me because it reminds me of the time you used to have interviews with interesting fertile females online or appear with D-list celebs doing/being interviewed on internet radio (remember internet radio?). It is simply pointless.

1999 closed with lots more promise for Luke Ford than does 2009. You have so little to lose at this point that I suggest you make a play for Sandra Tsing Loh in the hope that she starts writing about you, no matter the context.

The Awareness Center’s First Annual Dreidel Challenge

    Vicki Polin emails:

Many Jewish survivors of childhood sexual abuse have a difficult time over holidays, just like Hanukkah. Unfortunately, in some homes abuse gets worst when tensions mount. For some Hanukkah can be a mixture of both good and bad memories of family gatherings. Being an incest survivor, years ago I realized I needed years I needed to create new traditions, since being with my family was out of the question. It was a difficult task and one that I have to work at each year that a holiday comes up.

This year I was playing around on Youtube and came up with the idea of a “Driedel Challenge”. I know many of you out there are pretty creative. Instead of focusing in on what we don’t have, painful memories and losses, I was thinking how about it might be healing to focus on something that can be both fun and silly. How about coming up with a better video better then the link I’m providing below and submitting it to the “Driedel Challenge” contest?

The rule of the “Driedel Challenge” is that your video has to be an original, be empowering and healing — and have the song “I had a little dreidel” in it. Once you come up with a video, post it to youtube and send the link to [email protected]. The Awareness Center is currently putting together a panel of judges. The top 10 dreidel video’s will be featured on The Awareness Center’s web page.

The deadline for entries is Noon – Friday, December 18, 2009. The winner will be announced motzi Shabbos on December 19, 2009.

Here’s a helpful article for Jewish survivors and those who care about them.
