Not That Muslim!

A Lukeford.net correspondent reports that at an Orthodox shul in Los Angeles on Shabbos morning, when the time came to say a prayer for the American government and the president, one Jew loudly said, “Not that Muslim!”

My friend says: “I’ve never heard anything like that before. Not that anybody in shul would take Obama’s life… Orthodox Jews didn’t like Bill Clinton but supporting Clinton was not viewed as betraying your Jewishenss as it is now with Obama. It’s the peace process in the mid-90s in Israel. Reasonable minds could not differ. If you were for the process, you were out to destroy Israel from within. That led to the shooting of Prime Minister Yitzchak Rabin. There’s going to be a come to Jesus moment for the Jewish community in 2012.”

New Valley Village Shul

Joe emails: This is the new (well, it is more than a year old) quasi black hat shul in the valley for those valley-ites who wish they could be in La Brea but cannot afford the cost of a house on June Street.

This website stands in stark contrast to Bnai David. There is nothing about helping the psychotic homeless in the area or anything about a women’s prayer group.

The news letter under news has an archetypal orthodox old school diatribe of the right wing against same sex relationships (that should be as repulsive as eating blood, FTW!!). The photos are bereft of any women. The content is basic but the message is clear. We are not tolerant, we are authentic. If you have a problem with that, hit the bricks.

Seriously, you should do an analysis of shul websites and how they reflect the essence of a shul. Websites are great because they are meant to appeal to the outside world, but they are never edited by the outside world. It is how movies used to be made – do you think 2001 could ever be made today – no way, a focus group full of minorities would not appreciate the lack of fart jokes and the production would never take off. A shul website is sort of a film noir view of a shul.

I just took a look at Bnai David’s website and Rabbi K had spoken about the “controversy” over ordination of Women Rabbis. Give me a break – at a regular black hat orthodox shul if a rabbi got up and mentioned that there was such a controversy they would open the door with his head. I really think Bnai David needs to consider going back to some basic normative form of Orthodoxy and not opening the shul to every crackpot controversy just to show how cool it is. It is like there is some massive form of cognitive dissonance there that is forcing them to be super-tolerant, are they really that guilt ridden that they have a mechitza and only men can lead services. Jeez, it is called tradition. Maybe they should get on a bus and see Fiddler on the Roof.

The Bottom Line

Joe emails: Obama must be gotten rid of in 2012. His continued presence is bad for the Jews, Israel and America. The Republicans have no credible candidate with any appeal to minorities and youth, and their votes matter. The question is, which candidate would be the best president for the Jews? The answer, after this weekend’s nuptials, is obvious. Hillary Rodham Clinton.

She should resign her post after the November election and announce her candidacy. She is the mother in law of a jew, and will quickly soak up tons of jewish money.

Because you have so much pull with Prager, get him on board.

Luke says: How about Dennis Prager for president?

Joe emails: the guy appeals to minorities about as much as pat boone. First off, you have to deal with being against a minority candidate from a generation in the late baby boom. You cannot go back in age beyond, i would say, someone born after 1956. Prager was born in 1948. Second, the guy has more divorces than obama has muslim parents. forget about it. Prager has a glass ceiling made of his own foibles. He pisses off those who are close to him, and only his listeners dig him. Remember his TV show – laughable.

CHARLES EMAILS: Hillary Clinton is the one that started this mess.

First, she was the first US administration official ever to support a Palestinian state.

Then, she kissed Suha Arafat after Mrs. Arafat made a speech denying the existence of the gas chambers

Torah Weirdo

A few years ago in the Jewish Journal of Los Angeles, Aish HaTorah rabbi Aryeh Markman called me a “Torah weirdo.”

I felt hurt at first but then Chaim Amalek told me he loved the phrase and so I learned initially to make peace with it and then finally to use it to my advantage (even when the goyim don’t like it).

I met someone in yoga the other day and ever since then I’ve found myself repeatedly explaining to her that the only explanation for my behavior is that I’m weirdo.

Hey, in my book, any date that doesn’t end in a cloud of pepper spray is a good date.

Yaakov Brawer writes for Chabad:

“Can’t you do anything normal?” The first time I heard this question actually voiced was 15 years ago. I was a newly appointed member of the staff of the Royal Victoria Hospital and of McGill University. I had walked out in the middle of an important departmental budget meeting because the sun was low, it was Tu B’Shevat (the 15th of the Jewish month of Shevat, celebrated as the “New Year for Trees”), and I had yet to eat any fruit.

I ran down Peel Street to Chabad House, ate a couple of figs, and ran back to the hospital, where I was confronted by several concerned colleagues who naturally assumed that my abrupt exit from such an urgent meeting betokened the onset of serious illness. I put their minds at rest and told them about Tu B’Shevat, the sun and the figs. They looked at me in frustrated disbelief, and one of them, a Jew, sputtered the question that had probably been gnawing at him since my arrival at McGill: “Can’t you do anything normal?”

Aside from the grammar, it was an excellent question. It encompassed absences from important professional activities on Shabbat and Jewish Holidays, unwillingness to attend obligatory social events such as the rash of holiday parties in late December, the beard, tzitzit, dietary restrictions, etc. The answer is, of course, No. I can’t do anything normal. Jewish life is simply not normal. The Torah demands abnormality.

Narcissism, Revisited

From DennisPrager.com: “Dennis and Dr. Stephen Marmer, member of the clinical faculty of the UCLA medical school and practicing psychiatrist in Brentwood, CA revisit a key issue to your happiness – narcissism.”

Stephen Marmer: “Narcissism in common terms is grandiosity — thinking that you are the greatest ever. Narcissism is seeing things only from your perspective. Anyone else’s perspective is either wrong or irrelevant. Only your perspective counts. Only your thoughts are correct. Only your emotions are justified. Only your hurts are legitimate hurts. Only your innocent actions should be interpreted as innocent by everybody else, even if it hurts them. Everything in your life is for you. Self-referential. Your world beginning and end.”

Dennis: “The moment you can say, maybe they’re right, you’re undoing narcissism.”

Stephen: “Yes! I can see your point of view. Or, I understand how that felt for you. Or, your claim right now has more merit than mine. All those are signs that the narcissism is changing. Nowhere is this more clear than in the difference between narcissistic love and real love.”

“Most narcissistic people don’t bother to see things from an outsider perspective. If you only see things from your point of view, you won’t get to the point where you notice. Mostly people learn that they are narcissistic when people they care about tell them they are narcissistic.”

“A narcissistic person can’t be happy unless they’re constantly fed by other people meeting their needs. They don’t get a lot of satisfaction meeting someone else’s needs. They can’t stand being alone. They get no lasting fulfillment. It’s like eating junk food.

“Someone who is not narcissistic gets great happiness from things they do for others. Generosity. Kindness. Watching someone else’s back. That you can do all the time. You don’t depend upon others. You depend on yourself to do those things. If you are not narcissistic, this is a great happiness generator.”

“A narcissist can have pleasure but not fulfillment and happiness.”

“Sometimes they can keep friends because they can be clever making their friend feel like the most valuable person in the world. When you are with a narcissist, you have their undivided attention, but not because they want you, they want you to accommodate them. Like a wolf loves a sheep and wants to make the sheep feel good so they can eat it.”

I was diagnosed with Narcissistic Personality Disorder in 2000.

Greg Leake emails: Hi Luke,
Look, if you’re running in the fast lane in LaLa Land, you’d better be a narcissist.

Luke, you may be a narcissist, or Beezlebub, or the sorcerer’s apprentice, but there may be some mitigating factors.

In show biz in LaLa Land, everyone is trying to do self-promotion 24 hours a day. Capturing attention is the coinage of upward mobility. Whether you’re Brittney shaving her head and intentionally not wearing underwear in public, or Paris drunk and disorderly at the clubs, or Lindsey Lohan crashing your car into someone, you’re in the never ending pursuit of publicity.

Used to know a girl that hung out in the Viper Room back in the old days. All the young actors and actresses hoping that they would be discovered. In LaLa Land people try to hit the street where they can be offended by a TMZ cameraman. Attention, attention, attention.

All these people willing to sell their souls in order to appear on a reality show. And if by some miraculous happenstance someone manages to climb halfway up the mountain, there is the constant and never ending attempt to grab attention away from competitors who might be a fit for the series you want.

Luke, my boy, you were running with this crowd being a reporter on the porn industry. And had you been less aggressive in your techniques and procedures you would have never carved out the place for yourself that you had during those days. You might have been a bit unethical sometimes, but look who you were dealing with. I don’t imagine that reporters always worry about higher ethics when they try to get stories on the mafia.

And lest people forget, your public posture was always one of disapproval for the porn industry. I invite your readers to check out your appearances and interviews. I never once recall you being in favor of the porn industry.

This apparently got you in trouble with some fairly nasty characters. I remember, years ago, seeing your pictures with the gun. (It looked to me to be a .38 or .357… possibly a Python… hard to recall.) Well, you were being attacked as I understand it, physically, by some associates in the porn industry, because of your disapproval. Honestly, Luke, and down here in Texas everyone has guns. And it is understood that if someone attacks you and you have to threaten them or shoot them, this is simply part of the natural proclivities involved in self-protection. Sure, the pictures were screwy, but I understood you were trying to send a message. A warning that you were armed and crazy enough to use it. Who knows? You may have prevented having to shoot someone by letting them know that you were prepared to defend yourself.

So my view is that if you are a narcissist, then everyone in show business, legitimate or porn, is a narcissist in LaLa Land. You don’t achieve success in devolutionary LA without being a shameless self-promoter.

As for your biography of Dennis Prager, I love Dennis and I know you do too. And it was a bad thing to reveal his personal life after he befriended you.

However, you didn’t reveal anything bad or scandalous about him. You may have caused people to see him in a somewhat more human light, perhaps with his own innocuous set of foibles, but there was nothing in your writing to change his image as an absolutely upright, moral, wise and wonderful person. Frankly, had you really known something deleterious about him, you very well might have excluded it. So I’m going to have to give you passing marks on that one. It was not a good thing you did, but it was not a Kitty Kelly. There were no snakes to bring out of the woodwork.

A lot of people are really screwed up in various ways when they are young. Sometimes as they grow older they mellow out and their youthful problems diminish along the way. Now you have yourself strapped in to the demands of Orthodox Judaism, and you really have bound yourself from most possibilities of misdeeds. A lot of your critics were ex-girlfriends, deeply religious family members, and their perception of you might be somewhat different than the healthy care professionals’ who looked into your problems.

And you know, you really have the ability to answer all these questions yourself. Do you really care about other people in a heartfelt way, at least the ones you’re close to, or not?

Socially isolated people are more likely to kick the bucket, push up the daisies, go thru the final check-out, and do the Big Sleep.

A new Brigham Young University study adds our social relationships to the “short list” of factors that predict a person’s odds of living or dying.

In the journal PLoS Medicine, BYU professors Julianne Holt-Lunstad and Timothy Smith report that social connections – friends, family, neighbors or colleagues – improve our odds of survival by 50 percent. Here is how low social interaction compares to more well-known risk factors:

– Equivalent to smoking 15 cigarettes a day

– Equivalent to being an alcoholic

– More harmful than not exercising

– Twice as harmful as obesity

“The idea that a lack of social relationships is a risk factor for death is still not widely recognized by health organizations and the public,” write the PLoS Medicine editors in a summary of the BYU study and why it was done.

No More Barriers For Women, Blacks, Hispanics

On his radio show today, Dennis Prager says: “President Obama appointed two women to the U.S. Supreme Court. So what? At what point will the liberal shut up on this issue and realize that there are no barriers to women in this society. There are no barriers to blacks either. There are no barriers to hispanics either. I’m not sure there ever were. What American ever cared his last name was Gonzales?”

Prager said he did not expect Elena Kagan to have a distinguished record. “Her life experience is so spectacularly limited, I don’t know where she will get any wisdom from. You could not serve on the Sanhedrin if you were not married and had a child.”

“She has the most limited background of any Supreme Court nominee I have studied.”

From DennisPrager.com: “The University of Illinois fired a religious studies instructor who defended the Catholic position on homosexuality. They said it violated the University’s policy of “inclusivity.” Another college in Illinois canceled a planned appearance by Karl Rove. They gave a weak cheese excuse, but the real reason is painfully obvious.”

Dennis: “If there is same-sex marriage, it will be forbidden to teach Jewish and Christian views of homosexuality.”

New Hugh Hefner Documentary

The Washington Post says: Hugh Hefner is an American hero. And not just to 14-year-old boys.

That’s the message of “Hugh Hefner: Playboy, Activist and Rebel.” Part hagiography and part history of the girlie-magazine-turned-literary-journal known as Playboy, the documentary by Brigitte Berman takes a mostly uncritical look at the man known almost universally as Hef. In the movie’s view — and in the views of the vast majority of its talking heads — the now-84-year-old publisher should be remembered not for his iconic skin mag, but as a tireless champion of gay and civil rights, free speech and liberty, and as a ferocious opponent of censorship, violence, war and religious persecution.

Those few unlucky souls who appear on camera badmouthing him — mainly feminist Susan Brownmiller, singer Pat Boone and conservative talk-radio host Dennis Prager — end up sounding like humorless nerds at best, and puritanical killjoys at worst. “Without some suppression of the sexual genie,” Prager sniffs, “happiness is not possible.”

ON HIS RADIO SHOW TODAY, DENNIS PRAGER SAYS: “For the left, any suggestion that we should in any way suppress our sexual desires drives the cultural left into a fit. The left is undermining of liberty but there is one area where if you suggest you not act out every sexual desire, the cultural left goes bonkers. He could’ve chosen any line.”
