They have it in spades. They see me as this adorable nerdy self-doubting nebbish. We get along so well because I don’t expect them to act white.

Comment: Didn’t Kevin MacDonald say that guru-ism is a bigger thing among Jews than among wasps and whites?
Guru-ism is about loyal admiration and worship of a great man of learning and spirituality in Jewish tradition. The man is seen as superior to others around him. Indeed, he is so great and amazing that he expects devotion from those around him.
Guru-ism is a form of super-individualism that works against democratic individualism. It says there is this great prophet, seer, genius, or whatever whose individual worth is so superior that others cannot equal him. Never. So, they must suppress their own inferior individualism in honor of the great individualist. There was some of this in Marxism where Marx was not to be questioned. There is some of this in Ayn Rand philosophy where some individuals are deemed to be so great that they should never compromise whereas others should submit to the great man’s will. Though some people think Rand was for the common individual, she was only for the super-individual. At the end of FOUNTAINHEAD (the movie), the the rich guy submits his will to that of Howard Roark. He gives his woman and money to Roark so that the tallest skyscraper will be built exactly as Roark envisions it. And Rand certainly didn’t see others as equals. She saw herself as a great prophet and expected those around her to agree with her. And Freud was the same way with his followers. Though Susan Sontag didn’t have acolytes and devotees, she was also a very difficult person who acted like she knew everything, and she had no time to disagree with those less brilliant than her.
Thus, the cult of ultra-individualism (of the great guru) is anti-democratic-individualist and anti-middle-individualist. It simply won’t recognize other individuals as equal or equally worthy.
Jewish individualism is a blend of both ancient tribalism and radical modernism. There is the element of the devotion to the Great Prophets. It also has the element of the cult of the towering visionary genius who sees farther than others and plays the role of Prometheus.
In contrast, the most prevalent kind of American individualism was middle-individualism if not mass-individualism. It tended to be suspicious of ‘great thinkers’ who seemed to know everything and ‘great artists’ whose vision and passion were so great that they had every right to violate all social and communal norms.
So, American individualism was said to be conformist, philistine, and anti-intellectual. But it was democratic in the sense that every person’s individualism was respected as equally valid and worthy as anyone else’s. For all individualisms to count as equal, a culture must be wary of ultra-individualism that says a certain guru is so very great that others should suppress their ‘lame and square individual’ and look to him for answers and guidance.
For American middle-individualism to sustain itself, it had to rely on manners (though this was bigger in UK) and community standards. Manners and social values are something that can bind everyone from rich to poor, smart to dumb. And Bob Hope represented this kind of middle-individualism. He could be goofy but he was always mindful not to offend or go against the prevailing stands of what was considered tasteful and decent.
But with the rise of Jewish influence, guru-individualism took over. It claimed to present new views, new visions, and new concepts that were so startling that they simply could not conform to the common standards of white-gentile-dominant society. The new expressions could be intellectually bolder than anything that came before, sensually more erotic than any that came before, humorously more outrageous and funny than anything that came before, and etc.
As much as people pretend to love ‘equality’, they also want to worship something that is deemed super-astounding and great. Cinephiles prefer to study Kubrick than John Sayles. Rock fans find Dylan more fascinating than Gordon Lightfoot.
In a way, Jews and homos have come to monopolize a kind of group-guru-ism whereby they are seen as so great that the rest of us should get on our knees and worship at their feet.
There was some of this guru-ism in German culture too, what with the cult of Beethoven, Wagner, and Nietzsche, later leading to worship of Hitler.
Ironically, though Jewish-ism and German-ism went head to head in a bad way in the 20th century (USSR was influenced by Marxism), both tended to indulge in guru-ism that was so much at odds with the more moderate middle-individualism of Anglos and Anglo-America.
Guru-ism can be useful in supporting geniuses, but it can also foster mindless cultist worship of individuals as gods. And that is always dangerous.
Many people ask converts to Judaism if they feel accepted by other Jews and some converts complain about a lack of acceptance. I’ve found that most Jews I’ve known accept me 100% as Jewish and treat me indistinguishably from others Jews. I’ve long been counted in the minyan and called to the Torah for an aliyah. I may be fooling myself, but it sure feels like acceptance to me. They’ve brought me into their homes for meals, they’ve set me up on dates with Jewesses born into the tribe (usually the dregs, but hey, no rabbis daughters have come my way), they’ve offered me jobs, they’ve rented apartments to me, sold me cars, etc. Most of the Jews who don’t accept me don’t accept me on my own demerits and they do accept other converts who have gotten with the program.

If I look for rejection from Jews, I can find it. If I look for acceptance, I can find that too. I guess it is up to me to decide what to concentrate on.

JCW: Los Angeles/Sherman Oaks Community Alert: Sholom (Dovber) Levitansky has been added to the Wall of Shame due to his alleged sexual abuse of a number of female minors.
Multiple victims have testified to JCW that they have been abused by Levitansky. After an investigation by JCW’s investigative team that spanned 18 months and following a review by JCW’s board, it was determined that public exposure was warranted and necessary.
Levitansky, aged 38, is from the Los Angeles area and is the director of Jewish Hospitality/Congregation Bais Avraham.
Who helped cover up for the abuser in the following story? According to 27yo Sima Yumash, it was Rabbi Avraham Union, Rabbi Gershon Bess, R. Berish Goldenberg (all of the RCC), R. Yosef Shusterman, and social worker Debbie Fox.
Sima Yarmush is the daughter of Rabbi Boruch Rabinowitz, a Chabad shaliach (emissary of the rebbe) at the Living Torah Center at 1130 Wilshire Blvd, Santa Monica, CA 90401. Rabbi Sholom Dovber Levitansky (I don’t think Sholom Dovber is actually a rabbi, I believe he flunked out of yeshiva, but in deference to his prominent Levitansky family, people called him “rabbi”) worked as an assistant at the center. When Sima Yarmush told her father about what Sholom Levitansky had done to her, Rabbi Rabinowitz asked Sholom who admitted what he had done. Rabbi Rabinowitz immediately fired him and told the wider Los Angeles community about the predator.

Apparently, Sima was not the only girl that Sholom Levitansky abused. After he was fired from working in Santa Monica, Sholom Dovbear Levitansky went to work in a rabbinic capacity in Florida, then Palm Springs before ending up in Sherman Oaks.
Here are some highlights from Sima Yarmush’s talk about her childhood in the Santa Monica Chabad community of the Living Torah Center and how Rabbi Sholom Dovber Levitansky, the son of Rabbi Levitansky of the Chabad in Simcha Monica at 1428 17th St
Santa Monica, CA, groomed her and then abused her, starting at age 14 and ending when she was 17 and able to get away:
My parents [Chabad shluchim aka emissaries] were told about a social worker [Debbie Fox] who at the time was working at Aleinu Family Services at the Jewish Federation building on Wilshire Blvd. I met with the social worker Debbie and told her everything. She promised me and my parents that she would help us and she would get four rabbis from the halachic [Jewish law] advisory board involved. Four Los Angeles rabbis were assigned to my case. Rabbi Yosef Shusterman of Chabad of North Beverly Hills, Rabbi Berish Goldenberg of Toras Emes, rabbis Gershon Bess and Avrohom Union of the RCC. A hearing was scheduled.
You might be wondering why I didn’t go to the police and press charges. I didn’t go for many reasons. I’ll share a few. I was 18, unmarried, and terrified of the public finding out I was sexually abused. The idea of fighting a legal battle with a man who repulsed me was terrifying. For some reason, I had this very strong… faith that these prestigious Los Angeles rabbis would certainly help me notify the public about the dangerous man. Wrong.
The meeting with the rabbis was very emotional for me. It was the first time I was openly talking about the sexual abuse I had endured. The social worker, Debbie, and I sat down with the rabbis. There was a mehitza between us and the rabbis… I told them everything…
The rabbis then told my family that everything will be taken care of and that we should not mix in. That we should leave all matters of the story of my abuse to them. They will take care of everything.
To make a long story short, my family got absolutely no backing nor support to show our community that the allegations were true. I was not offered any help or support. Until this day, not one of those rabbis has called me to ask me how I am doing. They simply sent me off that night with random blessings that I should heal and be well…
At one point after the meeting, being that we were shluchim, my parents had a private meeting with the Chabad rabbi who was at the meeting [R. Yosef Shusterman]. We had this huge community that was about to fall apart. He told my parents that they had absolutely no moral, legal, ethical or halachic reason to say anything about the abuse to anybody. He also told my parents numerous times to tell our community that this rabbi would be leaving for personal reasons and not to disclose the real reason.
I later learned that my abuser was sent to therapy by the rabbis, and that one rabbi in particular [R. Berish Goldenberg] took him under his wing to guide him. My abuser told everybody he is resigning from his position at our shul and went on to live in a different community, becoming a serious danger to the people around him there. The community that he moved to was not informed and had no idea about any of this. The rabbis who knew about the abuse did not warn the community…
My parents began telling my beloved shul members that my abuser was indeed fired and had to go because serious allegations of sexual abuse had come to their attention. They told everyone the truth — that the rabbi molested girls. Yes, we found out it was not only me.
My family got a whole variety of reactions from my community. Some families didn’t believe my parents. Some families blamed my parents… Some families boycotted our shul. Some families even went to the California Chabad headquarters to try to get my parents fired as Chabad shluchim [emissaries].
Meanwhile, as soon as my molester’s family heard that my parents were telling people that their son was fired from our shul because serious allegations of child sexual abuse had come to their attention, they called my parents liars.
One of the other shluchos called my mother to tell her that she is no longer welcome to bring other women to the only women’s mikveh in Santa Monica.
It was my parents who were warning others about a sexual predator who people were getting upset at…
I don’t cry because I was sexually abused. I cry because the people from my childhood who I cherished the most were not there to support me. I cry because important rabbis did not support me. I cry because I stood up for the truth and all I received in return, for the most part, was ambiguity and silence. So almost ten years have passed since I came forward to the rabbis, and I refuse to remain silent any longer.
After my abuser moved to another city, he opened up an organization and a website, offering a whole variety of rabbinic services including tutoring, counseling, Shabbat dinners, holiday parties, which provided him with access to children and teens. He recreated the perfect environment for himself to continue [molesting].
Meyer Seewald called my abuser asking him about the allegations. Meyer asked him if he ever apologized to any of his victims. The conversation was short. He denied everything. My abuser called [R. Berish Goldenberg], the one who took him under his wing, who in turn called Meyer, perturbed at the possibility of JCW exposing my abuser. For a short while, my abuser’s website was down and when it was back up again, it was updated with the word ‘Adult’ strewn all over the place.
Sholom Levitansky’s family’s Santa Monica Chabad (1428 17th) was the site of many child molestations. An older kid would recruit younger vulnerable kids into playing what he called “the privacy game.”
This older kid was never charged with any crime and he’s now an adult and still at large in the Los Angeles Jewish community (though not a rabbi and not in any position of authority).
A. asks: “Why is Debbie Fox still allowed to practice as a social worker? She’s a mandated reporter.”
Comment: “Because the victim is above 18. Legally, the adult is on her own. A mandated reporter is for children. There is nothing anyone can do if the victims themselves don’t come forward. The social worker has her hands tied in the back.”
Here is a common reaction I hear around Orthodox Los Angeles: “So angry that after so many years, the same people continue to victimize people in the community they allegedly lead.”
In the past, I often burned out covering these rabbinic sex abuse stories.
A Jew tells me: “I completely understand. I hate to think about the bad guys anymore at this point. I spoke with someone very involved in this case, though. And I basically realized that this issue – sexual abuse of children – is the tipping point. Screwing over righteous (would be) converts and agunot is upsetting, but has never been quite enough to get people to revolt. This, though, this is bad. It’s time for some change, in my opinion. Or as Meyer Seewald so eloquently pointed out, it is appalling that people here have shown more outrage at the prospect that they were given some questionable / not kosher meat (allusion to Doheny Meats) than that their own children are being molested and abused.”

The Catholic Church sold a LOT of property to pay for reparations to the children its priests sexually abused. Isn’t it time Cunin’s SoCalChabad Empire does same? There’s a Jewish boys school on 3rd street West of LaBrea that used to belong to the Catholic Church. It’s one of the properties they sold to free up cash for reparations. Every time I drive past it I think, “this Cheder made possible by the Catholic Diocese; this is the Cheder that Catholic Abuse Built”.

It is extremely sad & scary how many survivors have been and are currently being shunned by those they have turned to for support/help – as well as those who have had their experiences ignored/belittled.
As someone who grew up & currently live in a religious community in NJ it scares me how sexual abuse is ignored/ barely acknowledged as something that occurs on a daily basis -let alone exists. I can only hope that the JCW-JCW events makes its way down to NJ to raise awareness and tell survivors the importance of coming forward and telling their stories as well as, not to be ashamed for they are the true heroes/heroines.

The Journal is not printing the rabbi’s name because he has not been charged with these allegations in court, but among the Los Angeles audience during Seewald’s recent visit, the rabbi’s name was well known — so it goes in the close-knit Los Angeles Orthodox community.
Sima Yarmush, now 27, gave her own testimony to the community at the event, accusing this rabbi of numerous acts of molestation. She was 14 at the time.
Yarmush began by telling her story about growing up in Chabad, her bubbe (an Auschwitz survivor), her stifling shyness as a little girl and then about that aforementioned rabbi — how he took her under his wing, charming her and the whole community before, she alleged, abusing her sexually.
When she was 18, after coming home from a year in Israel to attend seminary, she said she decided to speak out and take action. Yarmush was assigned four rabbis who conducted a beit din (rabbinical court) and, for the first time in her life, she recounted the events in explicit detail; the rabbis, separated by a mechitzah, listened to her story with clasped hands. Finally, one of the rabbis asked her, “Who did this to you?”
That incriminating question with only one answer.
Finally, she thought to herself, after four years, the moment has come. And as she opened her mouth to answer the question, a Chabad rabbi interjected, “Let’s hold off on saying the name.” Furious and voiceless — yet again — Yarmush said she disobeyed the rabbi and spoke up.
“They simply sent me off that night,” she recalled. Her alleged molester got off scot-free, was sent to therapy and relocated to a nearby Chabad community in the Los Angeles area, she said…
Although JCW has not been sued for libel or defamation, it isn’t without flaw. In August 2012, Seewald immediately responded to an allegation made by an autistic boy, who falsely accused a Crown Heights special education teacher of sexual abuse. As a result of his entry into the JCW database, the man lost his job and was publicly shunned — before Seewald repealed the entry. But by then, the damage had been done and JCW’s integrity was compromised.
How did this event damage JCW’s integrity? How does the Jewish Journal know that the allegation was false? The Jewish Journal sides with the powers that be.
As for not naming Rabbi Sholom Dovber Levitansky because he has not been charged in court, the Jewish Journal has no problem publishing all sorts of negative things about people who are not charged in court. One example, Rabbi Shlomo Schwartz in 2008.
Sholom Dovbear Levitansky is the son of the pioneering Chabad shalich Avraham Levitansky, who died in May of 2007:
Jewish Journal: Rabbi Avraham Levitansky, one of Chabad’s first West Coast shlichim, or emissaries, died in his home on May 27, following a long, undisclosed illness. He was 67.
Levitansky headed Santa Monica’s Chabad for 23 years. He was the first shliach brought to the West Coast in the mid-1960s by Rabbi Boruch Shlomo Cunin. Cunin, the director of Chabad on the West Coast, was the first person the Lubavitcher Rebbe selected to appoint other emissaries.
Levitansky was originally brought to California to help launch Chabad’s Talmud Torah. He also helped launch Chabad’s first Gan Israel day camp and helped establish a program to help children in public school receive a Jewish education.
In 1970, when Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson asked for 70 new Chabad centers to be built for his birthday, Cunin committed to opening 12. He appointed Levitansky to open one in Santa Monica, or “Simcha Monica,” using the Hebrew word for happiness instead of the Spanish word for saint.
“Rabbi Avraham Levitansky was a dear, personal friend of mine for more than 50 years. He was my schoolmate, my comrade in arms, and more than anything else, he was a real brother to me,” Rabbi Cunin wrote in a statement to The Journal.
Levitansky’s synagogue was the first Chabad in Santa Monica and he later brought in Rabbi Boruch Rabinowitz to help. Fifteen years ago Rabinowitz opened another center, The Living Torah Center, which now operates a pre-school.
Rav Adlerstein said that about a decade ago in Fairfax, an Orthodox woman repeatedly left and returned to her abusive non-observant husband. Finally, he murdered her.
Rav Adlerstein did not mention any names or further details, but I will.
Six years ago, the Orthodox Counseling Program (OCP) of Jewish Family Service of Los Angeles began a hot line to help women such as Ilana. But at the time, OCP’s Dr. Michael Held staunchly refused to talk about the hot line. “If something is difficult to accept and you splash it all over the front page,” he said, “people will clam up, and you’ll find yourself farther away from the people you want to help.”
Instead, Held and his staff quietly worked behind the scenes, meeting with many of the more than 100 practicing Orthodox rabbis in Los Angeles, and their efforts have paid off.
…What opened the community’s eyes, sources say, was the 1993 murder of Rita Parizer, 36, an Orthodox wife and motherwhose strangled body was found wrapped in a sleeping bag in a garageowned by her husband, Shalom, at 325 N. Orange Grove Ave. Rita previously had reported a marital rape but refused to press charges, LAPD Det. David Lambkin said. In August 1994, her husband was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to 15 years to lifein prison.
“More than anything, the Parizer case brokethrough the community’s denial,” said Shirley Lebovics, a licensed clinical social worker who is observant and a domestic-violence expert. “It made rabbis stop and say, ‘This can happen. This is frightening. This is real.’”
…Rabbi Aron Tendler of Shaarey Zedek, however, said, “Abuse has nothing to do with one’s moral upbringing, but with the [generational] cycle of violence.” Tendler speaks about the phenomenon in a new videotape produced for the Jewish community by the National Center for the Prevention of Sexual and Domestic Violence.
“When I counsel couples, I tell the woman, in front of her intended husband, that if he ever raises a hand to her, she should pick herself up and leave until the problem is resolved,” Tendler said. “And if a woman is unsafe, it is incumbent upon every rabbi to pull out all the stops, including saying from the bimah that a man is not welcome in the community, because he abuses his wife.”
Rita Parizer went for help to the Orthodox Hotline and was seen by Dr. Michael Held and Mrs. Shirley Lebovic who did not report to the authorities the abuse Rita suffered at her husband’s hands.
Dr. Held worked as a psychologist at YULA. Later he was hired by Shirley’s husband as the director of a home for orthodox children with developmental problems called Etta Israel. As for Shirley Lebovic, she’s in social work.

Sam Vaknin: Narcissists invariably react with narcissistic rage to narcissistic injury. Narcissists see themselves as perfect and entitled to special recognition, regardless of his accomplishments. Any threat to this perception is a narcissistic injury. A narcissistic wound is a repeated threat to the narcissist’s false self. A narcissistic scar is a recurrent defense against a narcissistic wound, intended to preserve the narcissist’s grandiose self-perception, to preserve the narcissist’s false self.
The narcissist actively solicits narcissistic supply, admiration, attention, compliments, or fear. He solicits this to sustain his fragile ego. Thus the narcissist constantly courts possible rejection, criticism, disagreement, or mockery. The narcissist is therefore dependent on other people. He is aware of the risks associated with such dependence. He resents this dependence. He dreads disruption of the flow of his drug, narcissistic supply. He’s caught between the rock of his addiction and his feeling of superiority. No wonder that the narcissist is prone to raging and envy.
The narcissist’s thinking is magical. He views himself as perfect. Compliments that accord with this false self are taken for granted. Having anticipated the praise as fully justified, he feels that he has made the kudos happen. He annexes positive input. He feels that the source of this input is internal. He feels that he generated it. He is responsible for it. The narcissist takes positive narcissistic supply for granted. But the narcissist treats disharmonious input differently. He accords a far greater weight to this destabilizing information because they are felt to him to be more real. He takes any slight as more real. The narcissist is constantly on the lookout for slights. He is hyper-vigilant. He perceives every critical remark as complete and humiliating rejection of his entire false self. His mind turns into a battlefield of paranoia. Most narcissists react defensively. They become aggressive and cold. They detach emotionally for fear of yet another narcissistic injury. They give you the silent treatment. They devalue the person who made the unflattering observation.

7. Poverty, low wages, and lack of accumulated property.
8. Lack of thrift and prevalence of the gambling spirit.

Comment: Commentary…at this point is just forum for justifying whatever the government of Israel is doing today, plus endless and thinly veiled ethnic cheerleading. I mean, the relatively small readership of Commentary (33 K per month) is almost certainly comprised of older Jewish folks who like to read articles that flatter them with how great Jews are. It’s the Jewish equivalent of Ebony or Jet.
This publication, like other similar pubs (e.g., New Republic) are tanking because the readership and the mentality just isn’t there. Thus Jewish Americans will follow German Americans, Irish Americans, and Italian Americans in the Self-Approbation sequence, to be followed (probably) by Asian Americans, South Asian Americans, and Latin Americans.

* Bob Hope: “I’ve just flown in from California, where they’ve made homosexuality legal. I thought I’d get out before they make it mandatory.”
* This reminds of [Lawrence] Auster talking about the Jewish dilemma when faced with a gentile icon. It’s a giant hairy ball of “…how can this be? WE are the CHOSEN!”
Intelligent, assimilated types recognize that the gentiles produce giants and that is just the way it is in the real world. While the unassimilated bunker mentality Jews (type you find at Commentary) do not acknowledge that there have ever been any iconic gentiles. It just doesn’t compute.
* In any comedy competition, I’d pit WASPs against Jews any day. Just about any British comedy is vastly better than anything American, i.e., Jewish. In fact, probably a majority of the Comedy shows since WW2 in the United States are British derivative. A recent, blatant example is the British Office compared to the American Office. One is brilliant, the other rather not. One is unpredictable and riveting, the other is typical and yawn inspiring.
Monty Python of course is the ultimate in British comedy and nothing compared in the US. Even watching goofy BBC shows like Top Gear today gives you a hint at the glory of WASPish humor.
In terms of stand-up–nothing was funnier than the least Jewish comedian I can think of–Sam Kinison. And of course which Jew can touch Jackie Gleason?
The only good, Jewish comedy I can think of derive almost all of their humor from an honest introspective about how sad Jews are–I’m thinking Larry David or the Coen Brothers. These guys are a lot of things, but they don’t shirk from looking at Jews with an honest eye.
* Is Commentary TRYING to produce antisemitism?
I am not naturally inclined to what Derb calls “The Jew Thing,” but this is enough to make me want to buy the complete works of Kevin MacDonald.
* That Teachout article is amazingly offensive. Hope wasn’t a nice guy, but in addition to inventing stand up comedy, he was the first comedian to break the fourth wall, and long before Carson was making jokes about his jokes falling flat. And his verbal humor was exceptional, even if it was put to use in films that today are quite silly. Much of his humor only seems old hat because everyone copied and improved on the original–which they could only do because he did it first.
It’s like watching the 1933 movie 42nd Street, when the director tells Ruby Keeler that she’s going out as a chorus girl, but coming back a STAR. Yeah, it’s been done to death. AFTER. Not before.
* To be funny you have to be an outsider, but not too far out. You have to able to mock yourself so that you can mock others without seeming arrogant. British are brilliant at humor because of the class system. The best British humor often comes from the upper middle class who have to be both deferent to the aristocracy, but also loathe them. This creates that tension between mocking others and mocking yourself that works. Canadian WASPs have a similar advantage because they are permanent underdogs to the US. People who want to climb up the social ladder, like educated middle class Brits or Jewish immigrants, tend to notice things more because they spend time trying to figure out how the system works. Jewish humor had this in spades as long as Jews were underdogs. I think it is becoming increasingly difficult to be a funny Jew in modern America. While British right wing humor is generally hilarious, American right-wing humor tends to fail because American conservatives can’t grasp the concept of being self-deprecating, they often just come off as mean and arrogant. Steve Sailer, btw, gets this and is one of the most consistently entertaining writers on the political Right because he is able to strike just the right tone of underdog nostalgia and self awareness of his own shortcomings. Most continental humor, whether based in left or right wing, tends to be awful, because most Europeans take themselves too seriously. German humor, I have noticed, tends to just be very mean, whether it is left wing elites mocking Bavarian rustics, or right wingers mocking Turks. Italian and French humor is rooted in clowning around and slapstick, the humor of the peasant marketplace. Unlike a British or Jewish comedian who make you think he is really mocking himself, the Italian or French comedian puts a real or symbolic mask on before he plays the fool.
* The outstanding traits of the Jewish people (compared to other European groups), tend to be:
– Intelligent
– Neurotic
– Talkative / Attention Loving
– Success and Power Oriented
They’re also very urban, as a consequence of their personality.
Once you get into the idea of doing comedy as a thing – and there are some cultures where this is “not done, old boy, simply not done”, the English professional classes from the 1930s or even the 1960s, or a Chinese American recent immigrant background – to a certain degree I guess, if you are just fairly smart and willing to stand in the middle of a room full of people and talk and talk until you find what works and gives you the success and power you crave, you will succeed through persistance (and the sheer relative numbers of your group trying that sort of thing).
And if you do this in large urban centres where tastemakers gather (New York), then you’ll become more notable to society at large.
With the neuroses, I can think of comics, and people, who are very neurotic and irritable and funny and those who aren’t really neurotic or irritable at all and are very funny. So that’s not really a benefit or hindrance as such.
As a Brit, Americans often seem to vacillate a lot between sincere and venal, and between idealistic and cynical. Other countries don’t really get that super-wholesome “Mormon” type and the ultra-venal cynical success seeking individualist as often, nor do individuals move between each of these modes as often. I wonder if that affects the ability of Americans to produce comedy.
* I had a guy who worked for me in the 1980s that I got handed off to me because none of the other managers wanted him because if you were talking to him and he didn’t understand something, a look of total stupidity would wash over him. It took me awhile to figure out he was a solid 115 IQ problem-solver, he just had incredibly transparent facial expressions. Most people fake confidence for a few seconds when they’re trying to figure out what you are talking about but have lost the thread, but he couldn’t fake it.
Once I figured that out, we made an excellent team because I’d just immediately pick up that he’d lost track and back up and go over what I wanted him to do again, but slower. It’s really much more efficient for a boss-report relationship if the report doesn’t hide his incomprehension from the boss, but it’s rare.
* Nobody can be as funny as Eddie Murphy was in the 1980s (or Hope in the 1940s) for more than a decade or so because audiences start to pick up on the meta-joke. Humor depends a lot upon surprise, but there’s both specific surprise and meta-surprise. After awhile people start getting bored with any individual personality’s jokes. They can’t necessarily anticipate the punchlines, but they can, post hoc, see where the punchline was coming from: “I see what you did there” is not a promising reaction.
* I’ve met people who were involved in the ValuJet cleanup. (There wasn’t much to pick up after that one – the plane disintegrated on impact.) Those aboard suffered horribly before they died, all because some workers at an aircraft-maintenance company wanted to clean out the mail room.
(OT: A company called SabreTech was hired to renovate a few old planes that ValuJet had purchased from Europe. As part of the routine overhaul, the mechanics removed the old planes’ highly-flammable chemical oxygen generators. The generators sat around the warehouse for a while, and finally ended up in the mail room. One day, a supervisor ordered the guy on duty to “get rid of all this crap that’s lying around.” That guy put the generators in boxes and sent them to the airport. They were loaded onto a ValuJet DC-9 bound for the airline’s home base of Atlanta. At some point during takeoff or shortly thereafter, the generators fired and sparked a raging inferno that must have seemed like a literal incarnation of hell to the passengers and crew. The NTSB determined that the proximate cause of the crash was the unconscious – or dead – pilots’ slumping onto the control yokes, sending the plane into a nosedive.)
One of the guys who worked on the ValuJet disaster told me that the government disposed of hundreds if not thousands of bodies after Hurricane Andrew. Many such stories abound in the Miami area. (I’ve spent some time down there – lots of weird shit goes on.) It wouldn’t surprise me in the least.
Some of the salvaged components from Flight 401 were used in other Eastern L-1011s.
Over the next few years, there were numerous “ghost sightings” on planes that used those components. At one point, a flight attendant claimed to have seen the dead captain of Flight 401 telling her to check the oven in the galley – an oven that had been rescued from the wreckage in the Everglades. Supposedly the woman discovered that there was a short in the wiring and that the oven was about to burst into flames.
There was a book about the “ghosts” of 401.
* The Flying Circus (TV) is hit and miss, the hits being very funny and even the misses a bit unsettling, but I’ll grant that the misses far outweigh the hits. I’d say 25%/75% ration, which is ok for comedy. Some of the best skits from Flying Circus are redone nicely in the compilation movie Completely Different.
The movies? Still hold up wonderfully. Little dates them. The first time I saw them, I was laughing uncontrollably. To get into the specifics would be to write for pages. Even now I watch them and smile. And they hold up nicely. I’ve introduced kids who’ve grown up on South Park and John Stewart to Monty Python and almost all of them find the movies hilarious. There’s nothing small or smug about Monty Python.
In very broad strokes (ignoring the creative brilliance and collaboration of the Cambridge and Oxford educated members) two reasons why Monty Python is funny, why for that matter someone like George Frazier’s Flashman stuff is funny. They’re about something, beautiful fables of absurdity. There’s nothing navel gazing about it, the self-references are handled very deftly. Second, mechanics and execution. The British are fantastic impersonators, no one does it better, whether it’s accent, attitude, you name it. I think it has everything to do with traversing the stark class markers the British grow up with. It’s very important to know with whom you’re dealing and how to detect the genuine article from a fake. This capacity to be mentally quick on your feet–we Americans are hopeless. Just consider how awful our Congressional performances are compared to the British Parliament.
* Cavett and Allen. Wasp and Jewish.
Cavett was very funny, sharp, and witty.
But his waspy style of comedy was snip-snip. It worked like a pair of scissors. It kept things neat and trimmed.
Allen’s Jewish humor works more like a rope. It goes around and round ties different strands together and Allen puts himself in an impossible knot… and then he squirms out if it with zany-brilliant dexterity, like how Houdini roped or chained himself and then freed himself.
So, I think wasp humor tends to work in sparks and spurts whereas Jewish humor is more like a theory, worldview, or narrative. It’s fifty shades of humor than just a rib in the chest. So, the Jewish style of comedy tends to be memorable.
* The best British humor is ultra dry. Jewish humor can be very dry but it’s never quite as dry as British humor. Jews tend to be too expressive and extroverted in their comedy to be as dry as the Brits. They’ll be doing very dry stuff but there’s always a giveaway with loud exclamations, certain gestures and mannerism – it’s like a big wink to the audience. Larry David for example will be doing very dry comedy but will have that smart aleck look on his face the whole time acknowledging that it’s dry stuff. While the Brits seem to revel in maintaining the stiff upper lip.
German humor is not really humor as we understand it. Germans have no sense of irony and the idea of ordinary people or ordinary situations being funny is alien to them. To them, being funny means wearing a funny hat and saying silly things. It’s like you have to wear a funny hat or costume and behave and speak in exaggerated ways to be funny. That and screaming insults or falling down the stairs gives you an idea of what German humor is like.
* A measure of how funny Monty Python was is how much the guys from South Park copy them. A typical Monty Python sketch will start out “ordinary” (a meeting of a club … for putting things on top of other things, “This year we have put more things on top of other things than ever before!”) and then veer off into ridiculous stuff. “Gentlemen, I regret to inform you that we are surrounded by film!” Ending up with a ridiculous ending “If we are on film, someone must be filming us.”
The Njorl’s saga (where a commercial for business in North Malden keeps cropping up) and Tudor Jobs agency are classic, and form the basis for most South Park episodes, structurally. Something seems ordinary and just gets stupider and stupider in the most ridiculous fashion.
But comedy is hard work. It has basically, zero barriers to entry. It is the most darwninian of fields, and most Jews from the middle and upper class won’t go into Comedy unless they have basically failed at everything else or have a driving need to be funny. Comedy requires churning out joke after joke, or doing something weird (like the original South Park episode that took months to film and was a cult video tape passed around by Hollywood elites until the guys got their Comedy Central gig) and risky, or doing standup all around the country flying coach.
Compared to a nice safe, renumerative gig at some law firm or government office, comedy sucks. So as Jews move up to the Middle/Upper class, far fewer are going into comedy. Think, what was the last funny Jewish guy you ever saw? Seinfeld, maybe?
The meta joke about the Pythons is that they all turned into the characters they made fun of in their youth.

If there is white privilege, what is Jewish privilege? Is it a bad thing? If it is bad that whites are more affluent, educated and powerful than non-whites, how horrible is it that Jews are so much more affluent, educated and powerful than whites?
A friend says: “It’s a combination of Jewish hostility, the ability to hide behind minority status while being provisionally white and also powerful class privilege aka contempt for the poor while hiding behind the disadvantaged. It’s very common in the post-denominational crowd. Jews are daring for people to call them out and Steve Sailer has nailed them and he’s educating the goyim on how Jews are disenfranchising them. One of the things that your kid would learn to help him compete in 21st Century New York City in return for your annual $40k check is to talk a lot about “white privilege,” but never, ever talk about “white Jewish privilege.”
A Google search for “white privilege” reveals 833,000 results while a Google search for “Jewish privilege” reveals 24,100 results.
Nearly a half-century ago, Milton Himmelfarb famously observed, “Jews earn like Episcopalians and vote like Puerto Ricans.” Even more so now, we Jews resemble the WASP elite of yore. We are now the ones with trust funds, family foundations, legacy admission to elite universities. It is not that we don’t work hard, but we start work with a foundation of benefits earned not by ourselves but by our forebears.
So if you are able to grow up in New Rochelle, and if you are able to attend the S.A.R. day-school, both of which Fortgang did, and if just maybe you also had tutoring or test-prep classes, and at the least had the proximate example of college-educated parents, none of that means you did not toil. It just meant you started your toil with assets not available to the children of less prosperous, less educated families.
How, then, can we live as Jews in modern America with an honest admission that we are both Samson and the nebbish, the mighty and the vulnerable, the comfortable offspring of a hated, hunted people?

* Do these people realize that up through 1965, America was around 88 percent white? If schools and institutions back then did not cater to whites, they’d more than likely not remain in business. There weren’t enough non-whites to go around to make each school or institution diverse. Do they even realize this? Probably not. Just like Steve posts articles about liberals today wanting more white kids to diversify minority-majority schools, but not realizing that the supply of such kids is not what it used to be. But they can’t do the math and don’t understand that you cannot spread out what you do not have.
PS. This whole white privilege thing is fascinating to watch. The progs pick a theme and run with it. At first you think it’s ridiculous. Then you are surprised that a few people are actually discussing it like it has merit. Finally it becomes accepted discourse and any disagreement is considered out of bounds.
Our side can’t even get the ‘cultural marxist’ label to stick. The progs can seemingly get anything they want to stick, even the rape culture that in reality doesn’t exist, but in effect does.
* Yes, you have correctly pointed out (for the 1000th time) that anti-white multiculturalism is the dominant ideology of the upper class and, not coincidentally, that anti-white multiculturalism is also the dominant ideology of the media, of academia, of government, Hollywood etc.
But once again you avoid asking “Cui Bono?”. Who benefits?

I look around this world of ours, and I ask questions. That is what I do.
Why does the arctic fox have long white fur, whereas the southern fox has short red fur? Why?
Why did anti-white multiculturalism pass through the filter and become the dominant ideology? Why did it out-compete all the other ideologies?
* I think one thing that must be taken into consideration is that many of these “white couples” are actually Jewish and therefore don’t see themselves as being white anymore than they see themselves as being WASPs. For many Jews being white is a gentile thing. That is why none of these schools are running seminars on combating Jewish privilege.
* For various reasons, Jewish people are really overrepresented at the heights of American society.
For other reasons, this is especially the case when it comes to the media.
So he’s making a snarky comment about how in no way can you point out that say 50% of the elite media are Jewish people when only 3% of the population are.
So if having any white people involved at all in your thing is a sign of ‘privilege’ (and thus evil and wrong and icky), SURELY having Jews be overrepresented by a factor of 17 is also a sign of ‘privilege’. But you can’t say that.
* I am genuinely impressed with how Steve always maintains good-natured amusement when writing about our ruling class, with its gross hypocrisy and passive-aggressive displays of piety and contrition. Lesser men would have become deeply embittered a long time ago.
* Whatever his true feelings may or may not be is secondary. The fact that he elicits such barely concealed rage in his critics tells me he is getting the tone just right. He’d be a fool to change tack now.
* When I attended a private high school in Massachusetts, I had, on several occasions, the distinct displeasure of interacting with students from Philips Andover Academy, the nation’s most prestigious prep school, where the students are taught to maintain a downright sociopathic* fixation on getting into the Ivy League, to which 90% of them do in fact matriculate.
*(That is, amongst other things, treating friendly competitions between high schoolers like they’re Bolsheviks jockeying for position during one of Stalin’s purges).
A few months ago, on a whim, I decided to look up the latest issue of the Andover school newspaper. Virtually the entire thing was one screed after another. “How I Experienced Racism at Andover as an Asian-American.” “How I Experienced Racism at Andover as a Latino.” “How I Experienced Racism at Andover as an African-American.” “How I Experienced Sexism at Andover.” “How I Experienced Sexism and Racism at Andover as a Woman of Color.” “How I Experienced Classism at Andover.” etc. etc.
Andover is apparently a hotbed of every “-ism” under the sun. Each article was virtually the same in content as all the others; “People treat me like I’m an ‘affirmative action case,’” “People ask me ‘where are you from?’” “I’m held to a higher standard than everyone else,” “Andover needs to increase enrollment of students of color and from low-income backgrounds,” “teachers don’t give me the same encouragement they would to a white/male student,” “I experience microaggressions daily from students and teachers.”
My personal favorite was a report on a “symposium on ableism” that had been held at the school. A picture was provided: The four students holding said “symposium” on “how they experienced ableism as Andover students,” all white males, were seated behind a wooden desk with little name placards and microphones and water bottles, as if they were testifying before Congress. Their disabilities? (Clutch your pearls if they’re handy, you may start crying). One had ADHD, one had dyslexia, one had ADHD and dyslexia, and one had injured his back while playing basketball and temporarily had to wear a back brace.
On and on like that, going on for page after page. Unlike your typical school newspaper, which has only a few student contributors per issue, this one had dozens, all writing virtually the same article. What’s more, it had virtually none of the normal school newspaper type-stories about the upcoming Spring Formal or editorials about why pizza should be served more often in the Cafeteria or three months’ out-of-date movie reviews. I realized that the Andover school newspaper was not a “normal” one, but rather the students submitted “articles” to it to send clippings demonstrating they think all the most correct thoughts with their college applications.
Like all things at that school, everything is ultra-cynically boiled down to “how does it help me get into Harvard?” What’s more, it works! Needless to say, one is not exactly speaking the language of the powerless and “marginalized” if one is a Harvard-bound Andover tyke, soon to be tearing up an elite law firm near you.
* David Frum had an interesting Tom Wolfe analogy the other day: he was comparing “Mau-mauing the Flak Catchers” to the seemingly permanent canvass for “moderate Muslim leaders” — i.e. the theory that we gotta track down the local gang bosses and negotiate with them on items of rabble management (I think on the very day of that piece Marie Harf veered into her amusing discussion of ISIS job training centers on TV).
* But sincere kids who take this stuff seriously are weak, and clearly don’t have the right stuff to make it to the top at Morgan anyway.
* I think I read once that Quakers were the second largest non-black religious group (after Jews) represented in the famous Civil Rights era marches. They were certainly on the far left of the political spectrum, but even as radical as they were, Quakers weren’t fully on board when it came to the ultimate goals of the Civil Right movement, judging by the policies of their Earlham College in the 1950s.
Ever heard of the Communist NYC high school teacher, Abel Meeropol? He wrote the lyrics to Strange Fruit, the song about lynching; it was first published in New Masses, a Communist magazine. He also wrote The House I Live In, a song promoting racial integration made famous by Frank Sinatra. After fellow commies Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were executed for treason, Meerepol and his wife adopted the two young Rosenberg sons. When the younger one graduated high school and went off to college, he chose to go to Earlham (before transferring to the University of Michigan).
I mention all this just to show that Earlham was a pretty far left college, long before nearly all colleges had been taken over by “progressives”. But even at Earlham, interracial relationships were verboten in the 1950s. In 1952, they kicked out a white male student, Robert McAllester, for getting engaged to a black female student, Grace Cunningham. The president of the college stated:
The policy of the college has been to discourage hasty, youthful interracial marriages because they present problems which may be almost insurmountable in present day civilization.
Nearly two years later, in December of 1953, they removed the editor of the school newspaper (one Stephen Wersan of NYC) from his position for writing editorials in favor of interracial dating.
So even the radical left-wing white Quakers who were marching in Selma for Civil Rights were opposed to interracial marriage.
* When it comes to micro-aggressions, highly civilized white people are the masters. It’s unacceptable to settle your beefs with your neighbor ghetto style with knives, guns, fists, etc. so words are the main weapon used. Brits will cut each other to shreds with even raising their voices.
* I think our minorities should also be required to take a sensitivity class, entitled:

* I’ve noticed an increasing uneasiness on the part of Jews that the SJW hate machine has no scruples about denouncing them for their whiteness (see, the recent and uncharacteristic pushback against the Justine Sacco case in the NYT), and has fully embraced the Palestinians’ cause. It used to be the unspoken rule that Jews were off-limits, now, as the hard-left has diversified, no longer.
* Here’s the plot to the movie The Social Network: Two arrogant Harvard WASP jocks come up with the idea for Facebook, then make the mistake of hiring a conniving Jew nerd to program the site for them. The Jew screws the WASPs and steals their idea. They appeal to the (Jewish) president of the university, who tells them to go fuck themselves.

This obvious link between IQ and health outcomes does not get mentioned in the Washington Post story:
The island nation of Madagascar and the landlocked Himalayan nation of Bhutan might seem like charming tourist attractions. Travelers might want to think twice before visiting them, though. A recent Health Risk index by International SOS urges caution for visitors to those two countries, among other places.
The world map reprinted here is a reflection of more than 300,000 medical incidents which were reported in 2014 by companies to International SOS, which specializes in health care and emergency services to clients with business travelers overseas. Based on that data, a panel took into account threats of infectious disease, hygiene and sanitation, frequency of accidents and the availability and quality of the local health infrastructure to determine how risky a trip to a particular country might be.
Despite their pristine natural beauty, Bhutan and Madagascar pose an array of risks: from the difficulty of finding adequate hospitals in remote areas to poor sanitation in others.
Some classifications made in this index ought to be questioned, though. Cuba, for instance — a country whose doctors are internationally renowned — was classified as a “high risk” country in the Americas.

Whatever Happened To Commentary Magazine?
Comment: Commentary…at this point is just forum for justifying whatever the government of Israel is doing today, plus endless and thinly veiled ethnic cheerleading. I mean, the relatively small readership of Commentary (33 K per month) is almost certainly comprised of older Jewish folks who like to read articles that flatter them with how great Jews are. It’s the Jewish equivalent of Ebony or Jet.
This publication, like other similar pubs (e.g., New Republic) are tanking because the readership and the mentality just isn’t there. Thus Jewish Americans will follow German Americans, Irish Americans, and Italian Americans in the Self-Approbation sequence, to be followed (probably) by Asian Americans, South Asian Americans, and Latin Americans.
Comments to Steve Sailer:
* Bob Hope: “I’ve just flown in from California, where they’ve made homosexuality legal. I thought I’d get out before they make it mandatory.”
* This reminds of [Lawrence] Auster talking about the Jewish dilemma when faced with a gentile icon. It’s a giant hairy ball of “…how can this be? WE are the CHOSEN!”
Intelligent, assimilated types recognize that the gentiles produce giants and that is just the way it is in the real world. While the unassimilated bunker mentality Jews (type you find at Commentary) do not acknowledge that there have ever been any iconic gentiles. It just doesn’t compute.
* In any comedy competition, I’d pit WASPs against Jews any day. Just about any British comedy is vastly better than anything American, i.e., Jewish. In fact, probably a majority of the Comedy shows since WW2 in the United States are British derivative. A recent, blatant example is the British Office compared to the American Office. One is brilliant, the other rather not. One is unpredictable and riveting, the other is typical and yawn inspiring.
Monty Python of course is the ultimate in British comedy and nothing compared in the US. Even watching goofy BBC shows like Top Gear today gives you a hint at the glory of WASPish humor.
In terms of stand-up–nothing was funnier than the least Jewish comedian I can think of–Sam Kinison. And of course which Jew can touch Jackie Gleason?
The only good, Jewish comedy I can think of derive almost all of their humor from an honest introspective about how sad Jews are–I’m thinking Larry David or the Coen Brothers. These guys are a lot of things, but they don’t shirk from looking at Jews with an honest eye.
* Is Commentary TRYING to produce antisemitism?
I am not naturally inclined to what Derb calls “The Jew Thing,” but this is enough to make me want to buy the complete works of Kevin MacDonald.
* That Teachout article is amazingly offensive. Hope wasn’t a nice guy, but in addition to inventing stand up comedy, he was the first comedian to break the fourth wall, and long before Carson was making jokes about his jokes falling flat. And his verbal humor was exceptional, even if it was put to use in films that today are quite silly. Much of his humor only seems old hat because everyone copied and improved on the original–which they could only do because he did it first.
It’s like watching the 1933 movie 42nd Street, when the director tells Ruby Keeler that she’s going out as a chorus girl, but coming back a STAR. Yeah, it’s been done to death. AFTER. Not before.
* To be funny you have to be an outsider, but not too far out. You have to able to mock yourself so that you can mock others without seeming arrogant. British are brilliant at humor because of the class system. The best British humor often comes from the upper middle class who have to be both deferent to the aristocracy, but also loathe them. This creates that tension between mocking others and mocking yourself that works. Canadian WASPs have a similar advantage because they are permanent underdogs to the US. People who want to climb up the social ladder, like educated middle class Brits or Jewish immigrants, tend to notice things more because they spend time trying to figure out how the system works. Jewish humor had this in spades as long as Jews were underdogs. I think it is becoming increasingly difficult to be a funny Jew in modern America. While British right wing humor is generally hilarious, American right-wing humor tends to fail because American conservatives can’t grasp the concept of being self-deprecating, they often just come off as mean and arrogant. Steve Sailer, btw, gets this and is one of the most consistently entertaining writers on the political Right because he is able to strike just the right tone of underdog nostalgia and self awareness of his own shortcomings. Most continental humor, whether based in left or right wing, tends to be awful, because most Europeans take themselves too seriously. German humor, I have noticed, tends to just be very mean, whether it is left wing elites mocking Bavarian rustics, or right wingers mocking Turks. Italian and French humor is rooted in clowning around and slapstick, the humor of the peasant marketplace. Unlike a British or Jewish comedian who make you think he is really mocking himself, the Italian or French comedian puts a real or symbolic mask on before he plays the fool.
* The outstanding traits of the Jewish people (compared to other European groups), tend to be:
– Intelligent
– Neurotic
– Talkative / Attention Loving
– Success and Power Oriented
They’re also very urban, as a consequence of their personality.
Once you get into the idea of doing comedy as a thing – and there are some cultures where this is “not done, old boy, simply not done”, the English professional classes from the 1930s or even the 1960s, or a Chinese American recent immigrant background – to a certain degree I guess, if you are just fairly smart and willing to stand in the middle of a room full of people and talk and talk until you find what works and gives you the success and power you crave, you will succeed through persistance (and the sheer relative numbers of your group trying that sort of thing).
And if you do this in large urban centres where tastemakers gather (New York), then you’ll become more notable to society at large.
With the neuroses, I can think of comics, and people, who are very neurotic and irritable and funny and those who aren’t really neurotic or irritable at all and are very funny. So that’s not really a benefit or hindrance as such.
As a Brit, Americans often seem to vacillate a lot between sincere and venal, and between idealistic and cynical. Other countries don’t really get that super-wholesome “Mormon” type and the ultra-venal cynical success seeking individualist as often, nor do individuals move between each of these modes as often. I wonder if that affects the ability of Americans to produce comedy.
* I had a guy who worked for me in the 1980s that I got handed off to me because none of the other managers wanted him because if you were talking to him and he didn’t understand something, a look of total stupidity would wash over him. It took me awhile to figure out he was a solid 115 IQ problem-solver, he just had incredibly transparent facial expressions. Most people fake confidence for a few seconds when they’re trying to figure out what you are talking about but have lost the thread, but he couldn’t fake it.
Once I figured that out, we made an excellent team because I’d just immediately pick up that he’d lost track and back up and go over what I wanted him to do again, but slower. It’s really much more efficient for a boss-report relationship if the report doesn’t hide his incomprehension from the boss, but it’s rare.
* Nobody can be as funny as Eddie Murphy was in the 1980s (or Hope in the 1940s) for more than a decade or so because audiences start to pick up on the meta-joke. Humor depends a lot upon surprise, but there’s both specific surprise and meta-surprise. After awhile people start getting bored with any individual personality’s jokes. They can’t necessarily anticipate the punchlines, but they can, post hoc, see where the punchline was coming from: “I see what you did there” is not a promising reaction.
* I’ve met people who were involved in the ValuJet cleanup. (There wasn’t much to pick up after that one – the plane disintegrated on impact.) Those aboard suffered horribly before they died, all because some workers at an aircraft-maintenance company wanted to clean out the mail room.
(OT: A company called SabreTech was hired to renovate a few old planes that ValuJet had purchased from Europe. As part of the routine overhaul, the mechanics removed the old planes’ highly-flammable chemical oxygen generators. The generators sat around the warehouse for a while, and finally ended up in the mail room. One day, a supervisor ordered the guy on duty to “get rid of all this crap that’s lying around.” That guy put the generators in boxes and sent them to the airport. They were loaded onto a ValuJet DC-9 bound for the airline’s home base of Atlanta. At some point during takeoff or shortly thereafter, the generators fired and sparked a raging inferno that must have seemed like a literal incarnation of hell to the passengers and crew. The NTSB determined that the proximate cause of the crash was the unconscious – or dead – pilots’ slumping onto the control yokes, sending the plane into a nosedive.)
One of the guys who worked on the ValuJet disaster told me that the government disposed of hundreds if not thousands of bodies after Hurricane Andrew. Many such stories abound in the Miami area. (I’ve spent some time down there – lots of weird shit goes on.) It wouldn’t surprise me in the least.
Some of the salvaged components from Flight 401 were used in other Eastern L-1011s.
Over the next few years, there were numerous “ghost sightings” on planes that used those components. At one point, a flight attendant claimed to have seen the dead captain of Flight 401 telling her to check the oven in the galley – an oven that had been rescued from the wreckage in the Everglades. Supposedly the woman discovered that there was a short in the wiring and that the oven was about to burst into flames.
There was a book about the “ghosts” of 401.
* The Flying Circus (TV) is hit and miss, the hits being very funny and even the misses a bit unsettling, but I’ll grant that the misses far outweigh the hits. I’d say 25%/75% ration, which is ok for comedy. Some of the best skits from Flying Circus are redone nicely in the compilation movie Completely Different.
The movies? Still hold up wonderfully. Little dates them. The first time I saw them, I was laughing uncontrollably. To get into the specifics would be to write for pages. Even now I watch them and smile. And they hold up nicely. I’ve introduced kids who’ve grown up on South Park and John Stewart to Monty Python and almost all of them find the movies hilarious. There’s nothing small or smug about Monty Python.
In very broad strokes (ignoring the creative brilliance and collaboration of the Cambridge and Oxford educated members) two reasons why Monty Python is funny, why for that matter someone like George Frazier’s Flashman stuff is funny. They’re about something, beautiful fables of absurdity. There’s nothing navel gazing about it, the self-references are handled very deftly. Second, mechanics and execution. The British are fantastic impersonators, no one does it better, whether it’s accent, attitude, you name it. I think it has everything to do with traversing the stark class markers the British grow up with. It’s very important to know with whom you’re dealing and how to detect the genuine article from a fake. This capacity to be mentally quick on your feet–we Americans are hopeless. Just consider how awful our Congressional performances are compared to the British Parliament.
* Cavett and Allen. Wasp and Jewish.
Cavett was very funny, sharp, and witty.
But his waspy style of comedy was snip-snip. It worked like a pair of scissors. It kept things neat and trimmed.
Allen’s Jewish humor works more like a rope. It goes around and round ties different strands together and Allen puts himself in an impossible knot… and then he squirms out if it with zany-brilliant dexterity, like how Houdini roped or chained himself and then freed himself.
So, I think wasp humor tends to work in sparks and spurts whereas Jewish humor is more like a theory, worldview, or narrative. It’s fifty shades of humor than just a rib in the chest. So, the Jewish style of comedy tends to be memorable.
* The best British humor is ultra dry. Jewish humor can be very dry but it’s never quite as dry as British humor. Jews tend to be too expressive and extroverted in their comedy to be as dry as the Brits. They’ll be doing very dry stuff but there’s always a giveaway with loud exclamations, certain gestures and mannerism – it’s like a big wink to the audience. Larry David for example will be doing very dry comedy but will have that smart aleck look on his face the whole time acknowledging that it’s dry stuff. While the Brits seem to revel in maintaining the stiff upper lip.
German humor is not really humor as we understand it. Germans have no sense of irony and the idea of ordinary people or ordinary situations being funny is alien to them. To them, being funny means wearing a funny hat and saying silly things. It’s like you have to wear a funny hat or costume and behave and speak in exaggerated ways to be funny. That and screaming insults or falling down the stairs gives you an idea of what German humor is like.
* A measure of how funny Monty Python was is how much the guys from South Park copy them. A typical Monty Python sketch will start out “ordinary” (a meeting of a club … for putting things on top of other things, “This year we have put more things on top of other things than ever before!”) and then veer off into ridiculous stuff. “Gentlemen, I regret to inform you that we are surrounded by film!” Ending up with a ridiculous ending “If we are on film, someone must be filming us.”
The Njorl’s saga (where a commercial for business in North Malden keeps cropping up) and Tudor Jobs agency are classic, and form the basis for most South Park episodes, structurally. Something seems ordinary and just gets stupider and stupider in the most ridiculous fashion.
But comedy is hard work. It has basically, zero barriers to entry. It is the most darwninian of fields, and most Jews from the middle and upper class won’t go into Comedy unless they have basically failed at everything else or have a driving need to be funny. Comedy requires churning out joke after joke, or doing something weird (like the original South Park episode that took months to film and was a cult video tape passed around by Hollywood elites until the guys got their Comedy Central gig) and risky, or doing standup all around the country flying coach.
Compared to a nice safe, renumerative gig at some law firm or government office, comedy sucks. So as Jews move up to the Middle/Upper class, far fewer are going into comedy. Think, what was the last funny Jewish guy you ever saw? Seinfeld, maybe?
The meta joke about the Pythons is that they all turned into the characters they made fun of in their youth.
