The Back Story On Daniel Arnall’s Rabbinic Ordination

Daniel has money because he’s the son of the godfather of subprime — Roland Arnall.

Around 1999, Daniel decided that he wanted to be known as a rabbi. He was davening at Young Israel of Century City at the time and so he went to Rabbi Elazar Muskin and asked for ordination.

Rabbi Muskin said no. He didn’t give rabbinic ordination.

Daniel went semicha (ordination) shopping. He eventually got one from Rabbi Abner Weiss who insisted that it was only symbolic and that Daniel was not authorized to decide questions of Jewish law.

Daniel said F U to Rabbi Muskin and started davening at Beth Jacob.

Rabbi Weiss went on to divorce the wife of his youth and marry her good friend, a congregant of his for many years. "He has balls to come back to town," is a common response.

The Jewish Press Protests The Hijacking Of Language

From its editorial board:

Sometimes it is hard enough to follow the logic of arguments that follow conventional forms. It becomes a near impossibility when arguments take on a distinct Alice-in-Wonderland quality.

A lawsuit was filed last week in Jerusalem by a civil rights group that challenged as racism the government’s practice of ethnic profiling which singles out Arabs for special security measures. According to the group, the Association for Civil Rights In Israel, the policy is illegal discrimination under Israeli law and urged that the U.S. policy of random security checks be followed.

The group called as a complaining witness one Hanna Swaid, now an Arab MK. Mr. Swaid recalled being strip-searched by security guards and having his luggage taken apart piece by piece 20 years ago before he flew from Israel to London, where he was a post-doctoral student. He said he now regularly receives complaints from Arab citizens of Israel about similar treatment.

Of course, anyone traveling to or from Israel knows that Arab passengers are accorded dramatically different treatment. Indeed, experts told the Associated Press that the ethnic screening process on the ground has been a key factor in the extraordinary safety record of Israeli airliners over the years despite their being considered a prime target for terrorists.

Mr. Swaid understands the need for security checks. “It’s in my interest and that of all other travelers,” he said. But the screening should be done equally for both Arabs and Jews, he added.

But the experts told the AP that checking all passengers equally would require manpower and resources many times greater than are needed today and would needlessly extend the time passengers spend waiting for flights.

Ariel Merari, an Israeli terrorism expert who has written about aviation security, told the AP that ethnic profiling is both effective and unavoidable.

“It’s foolishness not to use profiles when you know that most terrorists come from certain ethnic groups and certain age groups,” Mr. Merari said. “A bomber on a plane is likely to be Muslim and young, not an elderly Holocaust survivor. We’re talking about preventing a lot of casualties, and that justifies inconveniencing a certain ethnic group.”

So Mr. Swaid may be technically correct, but he is surely not right in the real world.

Consider also the following report from the March 19 issue of the Jerusalem Post:

In a solution to a decidedly postmodern Jewish dilemma, a group of pluralistic, secular rabbis ruled this week that when standing under the huppa in a same-sex marriage ceremony, both partners can be given the honor of “breaking the glass.”

“The breaking of the glass, a staple of every Jewish wedding, is used to remember the egregious hatred that led to the destruction of the Second Temple,” said Ofer Korenfeld, chairman of Havayah, an organization that arranges “Jewish-inspired” lifecycle events.

“This message is particularly pertinent to the [homosexual]-lesbian community, which is the target of so much hatred,” added Kornfeld….

Havayah belongs to a growing movement in Israel known informally as Jewish Renewal, which encourages secular Israelis not to give up their ties to Jewish culture, pushing yiddishkeit without God.

We are at a loss to understand what is meant by a ruling by “secular rabbis” or how the halachic “huppa” pertains to the decidedly non-halachic “same sex marriage ceremony.” But these days, someone says something and there it is.

Consider also the news report that a national tour featuring decorated veterans from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan won’t be stopping as planned at Minneapolis’s Forest Lake Area High School. School leaders abruptly canceled the visit. According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, the school principal said the decision to cancel was prompted by concerns that the event was becoming political rather than educational and therefore not suitable for a public school. The principal also said that the school had received several phone calls from parents and others, some of whom indicated that they might stage a protest if the event took place.

      The principal explained,

The event was structured to be an academic classroom discussion around military service. We thought we’d provide an opportunity for kids to learn about service in the context of our history classes. As the day progressed, it became clear that this was becoming a political event … which would be inappropriate in a public setting.

Are we really at the point in America that it is a political event to focus on the service of members of our military in a war mounted by the government of the United States simply because some oppose that war?

In sum, we urge our readers to look behind the importuning of those who would hijack our language and values in order to pursue partisan agendas.

Four Torah Sages Died This Month

Shlomo Greenwald writes for The Jewish Press:

The Orthodox Jewish world mourns the loss of four prominent figures who passed away in recent days, Rabbi Eli Teitelbaum, Mr. Bentzion Dunner, Rabbi Moshe Fuller, and Rabbi Yitzchok Chinn, each of whom left a lasting contribution to the Jewish community at large.

Rabbi Eli Teitelbaum, director of Torah Communications Network and Camp S’dei Chemed International, brought the letter and spirit of Torah to hundreds of thousands of Jews during his lifetime, which was cut short at age 67 on Sunday.

Rabbi Eli Teitelbaum

He created Dial-a-Daf in 1981, a call-in service which offers recorded classes on every page of the Talmud. The service has received millions of calls over the years.

Always a fan of using technology for Torah, Rabbi Teitelbaum wrote in 1997, "We’re not far from the day when laptop computers will be in every classroom as well as in every Bais Medrash." He acknowledged, "Yes, there are many pitfalls…grave dangers…. but one must learn to use every invention in order to better serve his Creator."

Rabbi Teitelbaum taught in Brooklyn’s Yeshiva Torah Temimah for four decades. His students "were fascinated and mesmerized by his lessons," his principal, Rabbi Eliezer Rapaport, recalled. "He had inimitable control of a class."

He played trumpet, clarinet, violin, and guitar, and sometimes brought these instruments to the classroom. Storytelling was another pastime of his. He authored several books, including the children’s book A Living Nightmare.

In the 1960’s Rabbi Teitelbaum helped start the national siyumei mishnayos for children. The ever innovative rabbi also filled a gap by producing traditional Jewish music records and organizing a Pirchei boy’s choir.

"There was no word ‘can’t,’ " a family member said. "He might not have been the most brilliant song writer but he did everything because he felt that he should…. and he never ever took money."

"He was a legendary individual, multi, multi-multifaceted," Rabbi Rapaport said. "His achievements are legion."

His wife, two children, and several grandchildren survive him.

Bentzion Dunner, 45, who died of a heart attack Saturday night in England, was known by thousands as one of the most generous baalei tzedakah of his generation. Just this Purim, according to several published reports, he gave out what may have amounted to over a million dollars to poor individuals who approached him.

Mr. Dunner descended from a prominent rabbinic family in London. His grandfather was Rabbi Yosef Tzvi Dunner, the head of the Union of Orthodox Hebrew Congregations in London and head of its beis din. His father is Rabbi Abba Dunner, executive director of the Conference of European Rabbis.

Mr. Dunner, who made his fortune mostly in real estate, had strong connections to both chassidic and non-chassidic yeshivas, and gave millions of dollars to Bobov and Skver organizations, as well as to several yeshivas, including the Mirrer Yeshiva in Jerusalem.

The Bobover Rebbe, Rabbi Modche Dovid Unger, delivered a hesped, and the Skverer Rabbi, Rabbi Dovid Twersky, attended the funeral.

He is survived by his wife and children.

Rabbi Moshe Fuller, who was in his early 40’s, was the founder of Ohr HaNer, an outreach organization that brought Jewish children from Central and South America to the United States to learn about Torah – the boys studying at the Yeshivas Ner Israel campus in Baltimore, where Rabbi Fuller lived, while the girls study at a separate location.

Rabbi Yitzchok Chinn, 78, was the beloved and longtime rav of Gemilas Chesed Synagogue of McKeesport, Pa., and a community leader. He was the rabbi of the synagogue for 50 years, and was honored along with his wife at the shul’s banquet last November.

Rabbi Chinn also served as head of the Vaad Harabonim of Pittsburgh. He was a close student of Rabbi Shraga Feivel Mendlowitz and of the Klausenberger Rebbe.

He is survived by his three children and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

"He was a parent not just to his three children," said Cindy Guttman, chairperson of the banquet, "but to many in the shul and around the world."

A Reader Just Sent Me A $1,000 Paypal Donation To Further My Ministry

So I’m on my live cam after a hard night learning Talmud, and I’m chatting on the phone and swigging my green tea and doing countless tasks while paying part-time attention to my chat, and after Guest 117 left, he donated to me $1,000 via paypal.

I’m stunned.

That’s only my second donation from paypal. The other $30 came from the Luke Ford Fan Blogger and he made me drop my trowsers.

This new man in my life, however, is straight. He’s a white bloke in China and a fellow sufferer of yellow fever.

I must form a non-profit foundation so I can get more of these donations.

How about a charter for the promotion of Torah journalism, Biblical prophecy and Talmudic humor?

I want to make my non-profit bigger than my father’s Good News Unlimited and Dennis Prager’s Micah Center and Dinners with a Difference.

I want to host meals at my hovel where Torah Jews have to interact with shvartzes and little yellow women.

I fear that we are living in the End of Days. I may not get to the mountain with you but I have seen the promised land where hot chicks are as likely to date bloggers as investment bankers.

Here’s the chat:

guest117:  Gentiles want to know
guest117:  So who are you talking to? Is he more important than your "followers?"
Darth:  Luke, whom to you prefer, Hillary or Obama?
Darth:  don’t ignore me
guest117:  We come here for guidance and you ignore us.
guest117:  Oy, some leader!
YourMoralLeader:  yo
YourMoralLeader:  prefer obama
YourMoralLeader:  i like him
guest117:  Obama may be "cool" but his wife is black to the bone

guest117:  Make us feel that we matter to you, that we are important
guest117:  Some of our parents ignored us, so we are a bit sensitive

User guest120 left the room.
guest117:  Ever read Potok’s "The Chosen" or "The Promise"
guest117:  Remember the boy could not understand the way his Father raised him in silence?
TimeToPutClothesInDryer:  How are you?
guest117:  His Father, weeping over him, explained that because the boy was so intelligent, he was concerned that he might grow up "without a soul."
guest117:  So he basically entrusted him to Hashem to teach his son the lessons that would make him truly great
YourMoralLeader:  yes
YourMoralLeader:  that’s how i was raised
guest117:  So there you have it
TimeToPutClothesInDryer:  You do.
TimeToPutClothesInDryer:  You really do.
TimeToPutClothesInDryer:  I also seek freedom from legalism as you do.
TimeToPutClothesInDryer:  What is new with you?
guest117:  Luke, Do you get many donations?
DanielLA:  In all ways…….
YourMoralLeader:  I got one
guest117:  One donation?
guest117:  Seems like you should get more
guest117:  Any tax deduction connected with donations?
DanielLA:  Are donations made to you tax deductable?
User QuixoticLass entered the room.
YourMoralLeader:  hi boss
QuixoticLass:  good evening
QuixoticLass:  I’ve got no audio so if you want me to know what you’re saying you’ll have to type
guest117:  Have you considered forming a corporation that could legitimately provide tax deductions?
YourMoralLeader:  hmm, not yet
guest117:  Lots of money around there
DanielLA:  Luke, when was the last time you were in Australia?
guest117:  As a vegetarian, have you eaten bitter melon?

Luke Melting Down Live On Cam

Fatman the Terrible writes on XPT about my live cam:

Yesterday Luke was very upset about these 2 rabbis and something called the RCC. He was rather incoherent. Talking oddly in a sing-song way to the camera.

I fear he’s melting down. The beard he claims for Judaism may be just lack of self-care. His place is a mess. He’s obsessed with being watched. This is not good.

Maybe its a mental collapse. Maybe it’s spiritual quandary. Maybe he’s tiring of the whole Jew thing as he did with the porn blogging. Maybe this ranting is just him looking for a "loophole" to get out of his conversion with some moral justification.

And, where would that leave him?

Got Any Gay Medieval Hebrew Poetry, Mate?

Marc B. Shapiro writes:

I was asked if there are any medieval poems in which there is explicit homosexuality. I am unaware of any, and it is precisely because they are ambiguous that there has been controversy about their meanings. This poem by Moses Ibn Ezra is as explicit as I could find:

Desire of my heart and delight of my eyes –

A fawn beside me and a cup in my hand!

Many admonish me, but I do not heed;

Come, O gazelle, and I will subdue them.

Time will destroy them and death shepherd them.

Come, O gazelle, rise and feed me

With the honey of your lips, and satisfy me.

Why do they hold back my heart, why?

If because of sin and guilt,

I will be ravished by your beauty – God is there!

Pay no attention to the words of my oppressor,

A perverse man – come and try me!

He was enticed and we went up to his mother’s house,

And he gave his shoulder to my burden.

Night and day I was only with him.

I undressed him, and he undressed me;

I sucked his lips and he sucked mine.

When I left my heart as a pledge in his eyes,

The burden of my guilt was also weighted in his hand.

He sought enmity, and inflicted his anger,

And angrily cried, “Enough; leave me!

Do not force me, and do not entice me.”

Do not be angry with me, gazelle, to destruction –

Extraordinary is your will, my dear, extraordinary!

Kiss your beloved and fulfill his desire.

If it is in your soul to give life, revive me –

Or if your desire is to kill, kill me!

Was The Rav Modern Orthodox?

Marc B. Shapiro blogs:

Since I mentioned some stories from Halakhic Man that show that the Rav did not have a Modern Orthodox ethos, I will also say something about the following story, which some have wondered about.

Once my father entered the synagogue on Rosh Ha-Shanah, late in the afternoon, after the regular prayers were over, and found me reciting Psalms with the congregation. He took away my Psalm book and handed me a copy of the tractate Rosh Ha-Shanah. “If you wish to serve the Creator at this moment, better study the laws pertaining to the Festival.”

I understand that some people are very troubled by this story, as it bespeaks a real intellectual elitism. Yet, to use an expression popular among the younger generation, I can only say “get over it” (or become an adherent of one of the non-intellectual branches of Hasidism). For better or worse, traditional Judaism has always been a fundamentally elitist religion, dividing the haves (i.e., those who have knowledge) from the have-nots. (Although today we are accustomed to think in terms of bringing Torah study to all, in a future post at the Seforim blog I hope to mention some sources that speak of the danger of allowing the ignorant access to Torah knowledge.) Precisely because we have a notion of ein am ha-aretz hasid we can understand why, in contrast to Christianity, we don’t have women “saints” in our history. Since women have (until recent times) been kept ignorant of Talmud and halakhah, there was no way they could achieve any renown in the area of saintliness.

How A Former Model Helped The FBI Nail Anthony Pellicano

ERSNews.com reports:

Her name: Erin Finn and she’s tall and blonde.  She’s also unknown, until now. Finn will most likely be a key witness in the federal wiretapping and racketeering case against Anthony Pellicano, former private investigator to Hollywood actors, directors, moguls and Hollywood high powered lawyers and their law firms.  His client and target list reads like a who’s who of Hollywood with names like Michael Jackson, Sylvester Stallone, Chris Rock, Gary Shandling and many, many more.

Pellicano is scheduled to stand trial in early February on federal charges of wiretapping and racketeering.  The charges laid out in a 68-page Federal indictment that include paying law enforcement sources for confidential information.  A federal judge cleared the way for Pellicano to act as his own attorney.  That decision could ultimately mean Finn will have to face in court the man she came to fear and loathe.

Erin Finn’s involvement in the federal case against Anthony Pellicano is a story, as the cliché’ saying goes “right out of Hollywood”.

Finn no longer lives in Los Angeles and says she was forced to leave Southern California because the threats, pressure and fear became too much to bear.  Finn called LA home for over many years and at one point was the girlfriend of Robert Pfeifer. Pfeifer, a former rock musician and Disney record executive, who has already pled guilty to federal charges related to hiring Pellicano to wiretap Erin Finn.   He was released on 1.2 million-dollar bond pending sentencing in early 2006.  He is expected to be a key witness against Pellicano and is believed to be cooperating with federal authorities on the case.

Finn assisted the FBI by working directly with lead FBI agent Stanley Ornellas. ERS News requested an interview with Ornella’s prior to publication of this story.  FBI Los Angeles spokesman Laura Eimiller told ERS News  “the investigation / prosecution of Mr. Pellicano and others charged in connection with the wiretapping conspiracy is ongoing, therefore, Mr. Ornellas is prohibited from commenting, as are any FBI personnel”.

Finn’s resume runs the gamut from model, to escort, house sitter, and Internet tech geek with her own web presence; with a site for guys who like their web woman techno savy and attractive. She currently runs her own website…  She also has friends like former super-hacker Kevin Mitnik.

Erin Finn got to know Anthony Pellicano, more than she ever expected or wanted too.  In a series of extensive in-depth and exclusive interviews conducted with “The Enterprise Report” over the past year and half, Finn detailed how she went from the ex-girlfriend of a little known record executive, to a key witness in the federal case against Anthony Pellicano.  Her story is revealed here for the first time.

How Erin Finn met Robert Pfeifer isn’t entirely clear.  What is clear is Finn became his girlfriend and the two dated and began an intimate relationship. Pfeifer became embroiled in a series of civil legal matters surrounding his employment in the entertainment industry. Pfeifer had been involved in a sexual harassment lawsuit in which Finn was required to give a deposition about Pfeifer and his alleged drug use and other matters.  According to Finn, she testified honestly and truthfully in the case and Pfeifer was not pleased about what she had to say about him.  That was the beginning of Erin Finn’s problems.

Pfeifer was so upset with Finn and her testimony against him that he hired Anthony Pellicano and others to dig up the dirt on his former girlfriend. Pfeifer and Pellicano had known each other for years. Pfeifer’s ex-wife even claimed he looked up to Pellicano as his “godfather”.  Digging up dirt on Finn, according to federal prosecutors, meant Pellicano wiretapped Finn’s phones.  It also meant, if necessary, obtaining confidential law enforcement information. His sources included an LAPD cop and a member of the Beverly Hills Police Dept according to federal prosecutors.

Finn testified before a secret Los Angeles federal grand jury about what Robert Pfeifer and Anthony Pellicano were doing to her phones and her psyche.  Neither one was very comforting or reassuring to Erin Finn.  When the FBI came knocking on Finn’s door they found someone who was willing to help them.  She had wondered what had taken them so long. She knew someone was wiretapping her, and she came to believe it was Pellicano because of his intimate knowledge of her private conversations.  Finn says Pellicano knew details about her mother that only she and her mother had discussed on the phone.  She took to playing radio broadcasts over her telephone calls in an attempt to make it harder for anyone to listen in.

As the case against Pellicano and others moved forward Finn developed an affinity for her FBI friend agent Ornellas.   She had become so entangled in the Pellicano case that the pressure caused her to leave Los Angeles.  She now lives out of state, far from Hollywood.

While Finn doesn’t relish her role as a key witness against Pellicano in his upcoming trial, she does know that that FBI knows that she is crucial to the government’s case.  So crucial is her testimony that although Finn did speak candidly to this reporter in extensive interviews about her involvement in the case, she is still is afraid to speak entirely openly without the approval of the FBI.

In early 2006 Finn agreed to on camera TV interview with this reporter. The time and location set, the airline tickets purchased and the out of state location was to be kept secret at Finn’s request. Her Los Angeles based civil attorney, Byron Ball, also had given the O-K for the interview. Ball a well-respected civil litigator, is representing Finn along with other plaintiffs in a pending lawsuit in relation to some phone company employees assisting Pellicano in placing wiretaps on her and other victims.  After all was set, Erin wanted to make one last phone call to Ornellas to make sure all was right with her FBI protector. The call would change Finn’s mind about doing the TV interview with this reporter and it would put fear back in the mind of Erin Finn.

According to Finn, Ornellas’ told her not to talk to this reporter or any other until after the case came to trial.  He said that case and her role in it had changed since her former boyfriend Robert Pfeifer had pleaded guilty to charges related to wiretapping her.  All this meant that her testimony would be even more crucial than ever against Pellicano.  Ornellas told her that talking to reporters would harm the case.

Finn says what Ornellas told her next is what changed her mind.  Ornellas told her that Pfeifer has been released on bail pending his sentencing after posting a million-dollar bond.  He was out on the street. Ornellas told Finn that if she went on camera for an interview that neither Ornellas nor the FBI could protect her from Pfeifer. The only problem was Agent Ornella knew then that Phiifer was prohibited from leaving California or traveling anywhere with out his FBI handlers knowing where he was. Along with a host of other restrictions placed on him by the Judge in the case as a condition of his release. Pfeifer was now “their” witness. If he went anywhere near Finn, who was now living out of state, he would be in even more trouble than he already was.   Nonetheless, Finn changed her mind at the last minute about doing an on camera interview. Finn says she wants to tell her story and is even presently writing a book about how she got caught up in the Pellicano case.

Finn told ERS News she doesn’t want to get on the wrong side of the FBI and Stanley Ornellas who have been “nothing but good to her” since this all began over 5 years ago.   Now Finn says she has turned a new leaf in her life and has moved on.

In the meantime she waits to play her part in the biggest case to hit Hollywood in decades: the United States government vs. Anthony Pellicano. When the trial starts she will get the chance to the tell her story to a jury. She may not be famous or a celebrity as are many in this twisted Hollywood tale, but she will no doubt be a key figure in whether or not the government will prove its case against Anthony Pellicano and send him to prison.  Pellicano who will be representing himself will get a chance to question Finn directly.  It’s likely that Erin Finn is not looking forward to that day at all.
