‘Got A Phone #?’

That was the header on one email I got today.

And what was in the body of the email? Nothing.

Here are some etiquette tips for when you email strangers asking for things. First of all, introduce yourself. Then say something about how you came to be sending this email. Then state what you want.

Here is a sample email that might work on me and others like me:

Dear Mr. Ford,

I came across your blog last week when I was researching American Jewish literature.

I read several of your interviews with some of my favorite novelists and I had some questions for you.

I am a third year student at Yeshiva University majoring in English. I plan to become a lawyer one day.

This subject of Jewish literature is a passion of mine. I am going to be in Los Angeles next week. I wondered if I could take you to a kosher lunch?

Yours sincerely,

Shlomo Goldberg

Holiday Greetings From the Staff of Lukeford.net

Gentle Readers,

It is easy to lose sight of the true meaning of the season in the tidal wave of crass commercialism that surrounds this holiest time of year. The staff of lukeford.net wishes all of our readers the gifts of love , joy , peace , brotherhood and health this holiday and in the new year.

Shalom.

PS. The author of the initial draft of this post ignored my book “The Producers: Profiles in Frustration“. When I asked him why, he replied that “it was not anti-Semitic enough.”

Why Do I Have My Live Cam On All The Time?

It is to stop myself from watching porn.

Yeah, I’m a bit of a hound dog.

I wish it wasn’t true, but Rabbi Union, as always, is right about me.

I wish I could say I have my live cam on all day because I hold myself accountable. I wish I could say it was a symptom of my Narcissistic Personality Disorder.

The truth is much more shameful.

Let the healing begin!

RabbiTopper: I am here to defend my honor.
RabbiTopper: In my defense I must say this: Shiksas are for practice.
RabbiTopper: And that’s all they were before I converted them over to the derech Torah – shiksas.

Shannon Orand Worked For Tovia Singer Before Leib Tropper

Rabbi Tovia Singer has lived on the edge for decades. He speaks from the heart, confesses his foibles, turns hundreds of people on to Judaism, and makes some powerful enemies in the process. He is one Orthodox rabbi who’s not afraid to do outreach among Jews who’ve converted to Christianity. He’s not afraid to do outreach period.

Tovia has always seemed aware of not crossing the line that would end his career as an outreach rabbi.

Rabbi Tovia Singer and Shannon Orand had a close working relationship for years. They had a close personal relationship.

I emailed Rabbi Tovia Singer for comment about whether or not he ever had a physical relationship with Shannon Orand and he told me they did not.

Rabbi Tovia Singer, 49, has been divorced twice. He lives in Jerusalem. His father, Shlomo Singer, has a yeshiva for older baalei teshuva (returnees to Orthodox Judaism) in New Jersey called Yeshiva Passaic Torah Institute. He has a cult following, much like his son.

From PTIWeb.org:

Rabbi Shlomo Singer was born in the state of Pennsylvania. During his Yeshiva years he had the privilege to know and study under the close tutelage of HaGaon Rav Rabbi Moshe Feinstein, HaGaon Rav Aharon Kotler and HaGaon Rav Yaakov Kamenetzky. From them, Rabbi Singer internalized the absolute need that every single Jew belongs in a Yeshiva. He developed a unique and enthusiastic approach to his Shiurim, that combines the strength and character to expose Torah learning, and the sensitivity to deal with those newly exposed to learning.

Starting in his own living room, Yeshiva Bnei Torah was built up and now has its own building located at 441 Passaic Avenue, in Passaic New Jersey. There, in-depth learning of Gemara and many different Shiurim are provided every single day!

Rabbi Tovia Singer is a mesmerizing speaker. He has piercing blue eyes. He’s active in helping Jews leave Christianity. He’s a caring man and he devotes enormous amounts of time to help people. When he connects with you, he surrounds you with love and creates intimate bonds through his outreach work. Many women have been crazy about him, including, apparently, Shannon Orand.

Tovia Singer has a B.A. in Social Work and a low-level semicha (rabbinic ordination).

Israel National News.com reported Jan. 28, 2009 about Israeli billionaire Guma Aguiar:

Despite having been born Jewish, Aguiar was raised as an Evangelical Christian, encouraged to participate in Christian youth groups and church events throughout his young life. At the age of 26, Aguiar moved to Houston, Texas with the determination to find oil beneath the soil. Seeking out a Christian congregation to join, he encountered Rabbi Tovia Singer who has devoted his life to helping Jews in the church return back to the truth and beauty of the Jewish faith. Rabbi Singer is the founder of Outreach Judaism and popular talk show host on Israel National Radio.

“Initially, when I first heard about Rabbi Singer’s efforts I thought that he must be some sort of anti-Christ, and I was really upset about his mission. So I decided to call him and argue with him. As a devout Christian, I couldn’t fathom why he was doing this work! I asked him “What are you doing? You’re trying to pull Jews out of the church? That’s the worst thing you could possibly do,” I argued. “Within 5 minutes of talking to Tovia, he entirely disassembled my entire belief system, and all the pieces of the puzzle came together within that first conversation. I repented during that first conversation, and I returned immediately to my true heritage, the Jewish faith.”

I blogged Dec. 20:

When you look at Guma Aguilar’s (Israeli billionaire who’s suing Rabbi Leib Tropper) profile, you see that though born Jewish, he was raised Christian, and in Houston he sought out a Christian congregation but met Rabbi Tuvia Singer and became turned on to his Jewish identity.

Shannon Orand lives in Houston. She used to work for Rabbi Tuvia Singer. Her domain name, Shannonorand.com promotes Rabbi Tuvia Singer.

Guma has a big fight with Leib Tropper.

From FailedMessiah:

Although not the first person to do so, Guma Aguiar, a billionaire former backer of EJF who has been in a long running dispute with Tropper, sent some of those tapes to FailedMessiah.com. Aguiar has long contended that Tropper has embezzled money from EJF, and launched a court case against Tropper in Israel over the summer in an attempt to recoup money he says he personally gave Tropper to distribute to various Israeli charities. It is unclear how Aguiar got the tapes.

This woman goes to work for Leib Tropper and has this affair and tapes the calls and disgraces Rabbi Tropper.

Would You Get Spiritual Counseling From A Rabbi Who Had An Affair With A Congregant?

Around 2002, Rabbi Simcha Weinberg (brother of Rabbi Matis Weinberg) lost his job with Lincoln Square Synagogue for having an affair with a congregant.

He was caught in the act.

He was subsequently divorced (and I believe he married the congregant). He lost contact with his kids. He went into a tailspin for two years. He claimed he was paralyzed. He had all these people praying for him.

After about two years, he publicly announced there had been a great miracle and he’d been healed and he returned to his rabbinic work.

Simcha Weinberg was the only major rabbi who wrote a denunciation of Rabbi Wosner’s psak against Mordecai Tendler.

Rabbi Simcha Weinberg speaks annually in Pico-Robertson at places such as Bnai David-Judea and Aish HaTorah.

I Googled “Simcha Weinberg” today. The first result? http://www.thefoundationstone.org

The tagline reads: “Rabbi Simcha Weinberg / The Foundation Stone / Torah / Judaism / Hebrew Bible”

OK. This made me queasy. I understand screwing around. I’ve done a lot of it myself. But I don’t present myself to the world as a teacher of Torah. I’m just your run-of-the-mill Moral Leader who bothers no one and no one is bothered by.

What disturbed me most about this operation was the third link down on the left: “Spiritual Counseling

I’m not sure that rabbis who screw around should offer spiritual counseling. Even if Rabbi Simcha Weinberg does not do the counseling, I’m not sure he should have his name on a website and an organization that offers spiritual counseling.

It’s gross.

Rabbi Simcha Weinberg’s affair and firing has been widely known for years. The man seemed very broken by it. Nobody wanted to do a story on him.

Then, about three years ago, I found he was speaking on Torah at Bnai David-Judea where I was attending Shalosh Sheudos.

I let it go.

Then last night I started thinking about it again and I thought I’d just raise the question on my blog about rabbis who philander, should they teach Torah?

Then today I Googled “Simcha Weinberg” and found out he’s offering spiritual counseling.

It just seems like he’s pleading to be stopped.

Why can’t he be quiet? Why does he want to be the front of a Torah organization? Why can’t he sell insurance? Why does he have to offer spiritual counseling?

The day I offer spiritual counseling, I want Yeshiva University to revoke my semicha (rabbinic ordination).

From The Jewish Survivors blog: “Rabbi Simcha Weinberg is Matis Weinberg and Aviva Weisbord’s younger brother. His father was Rabbi Yaakov Weinberg, and his mother is Chana Weinberg.”

“You should list Simcha Weinberg too. He’s the brother of Matis Weinberg. He didn’t molest children, but he did loose a rabbinical post for allegedly having relations with women he provided counseling to. He also has a Ner Israel connection. His father was a past head of the yeshvia.”

“Rabbi Simcha Weinberg was married to a niece of Rabbi Norman Lamm.”

If Simcha Weinberg did not have such illustrious yichus (lineage), do you think places such as Aish Ha Torah invite him to speak?

You can get away with a lot if you have the right yichus. Look at the cases of Rabbi Aron Tendler and Rabbi Mordecai Tendler and Rabbi Matis Weinberg.

PS. I get asked a lot about rabbis like Simcha Weinberg — what if they stopped counseling and stopped teaching Torah? Would that be ground to remove my posts on them?

I think it would probably be grounds to remove such posts. I’d have to talk to a rabbi about it.

PPS. In the Jul-Sep 1990 edition of Ultimate Issues, Dennis Prager wrote to Rabbi Simcha Weinberg: “As I regard you as a model of living Judaism…”

Attacking Jews?

Nathan Cohen emails:

Dear Luke Ford,

You never say anything positive about Jews or Rabbis. You only attack them all the time.

There is nothing unique about using the internet to attack Jews. It is being done by: Neo-Nazis, KKK members, Hezbollah, Hamas, the Taliban, Pakistani Americans, European Jew-haters, and more lunatics and villains than any person can count.

If you have real complaints against Jews, then the internet is not the correct place to talk about them.

The American Dream Vs. The American Promise

A caller to Dennis Prager’s radio show yesterday pointed out that Barack Obama does not talk about the “American Dream” as much as about the “American Promise.”

Dennis: “The American dream is how can I use these opportunities to make a good life for me, my loved ones and my community. The American promise is how can the state give me more. After all, it’s a right. The very claim that health insurance is a right means what can they do for me.”

Are There That Many Racists Out There?

Yes, I believe there are. I believe that about a quarter of non-black Americans do not like black people and that most of these people vote Republican.

I think a significant reason for the amount of racist vitriol online is that any comments remotely smacking of racism is such a huge social sin. Saying anything racist is about the worst thing you can say in middle-class polite society.

Report from the Chicago Sun-Times:

“Lock this monkey up in a cage next to Bubba. Go get the other monkeys in his gang and lock them up as well.”

“Blacks are far too lazy and co-dependent on whites to ever change — if they did who’d pay for their babies and food?”

“If it happened on Mars, I’d say he was a Martian. But it happened in Logan Square, so I said he was an illegal. Wanna bet?”

Who would write something like this? Some of our faithful, foul-mouthed readers, that’s who.

One of my jobs as a Web editor at the Sun-Times is to moderate the reader comments on every article — and man is it a messy job. Are there really that many racist people out there? Would they really say such appalling things in everyday conversation?

Handicapped Hatzalah Members

Jack emails: Would you want a person who is so disabled that they need a handicap permit responding to your emergency?

Isn’t the point of Hatzalah (Jewish ambulance service) to be able to respond quickly? How can a person who is so disabled that he needs a handicap parking tag able to respond quickly to an emergency?

I drove by the Ness Center on Whitworth and saw a Camry with Hatzalah
decals all over the car and a handicap parking tag hanging from the
mirror. I think you should investigate. Walk over there and see for yourself and then email Hatzalah and ask if they care to comment.

Unless this can all be explained by some one who is just trying to
park where ever he wants so he got a handicap card. You would think that the Spinka ordeal would have taught us to know better!

LOU EMAILS: “Luke, I know of one Hatzalah member who drives a Camry and recently had reconstructive surgery on both of his knees. I even know his name, but would rather not have it published because his selflessness should not cause him to be scrutinized. The man remains devoted to, and active in, Hatzalah. In the middle of minyan, this man gets Hatzalah alerts, and literally hobbles out of the shul to save peoples’ lives, always with a smile.”

Rabbi Tropper Is Back!

One of the signs of a successful penitent, our tradition teaches us, is that he is able to forgive himself.

By this standard, Rabbi Leib Tropper is a tzaddik!

Rabbi Daniel Eidensohn blogs:

Contrary to those who claim that Tropper is finished, he has been busy organizing his Maimonides Retreat progam this week in Monsey.

Horizons

Recognizing the potential of exciting campus programs like Maimonides and Heritage Scholars to attract students with a genuine interest in Jewish learning, we’ve created a second tier of programming. The goal: to provide young men [we hope to develop a program for women as interest grows] with the opportunity to deepen their exploration of the vibrancy and intellectual stimulation of classical Judaism in a fun and enriching atmosphere.
