Kosher Cop Canned

The New York Post reports:

The cockroaches in one of Montefiore Medical Center’s cafeterias were definitely not kosher.

But the Bronx hospital denies the charges of a food supervisor who has raised holy hell about the creepy crawlers, plus alleged nonkosher foods and other taboo practices in the kitchen at the Weiler Division.

The hospital fired Robert Frank, a mashgiach, or kosher-food supervisor, this month for badmouthing and “spreading false and/or misleading information” about the cafeteria.

Frank, one of three mash giachs at the Eastchester Road center, claims he was booted for doing his $18.55-an-hour job.

Robert calls me Sunday. “They haven’t given me any unemployment yet. I’ve got food stamps. I’m waiting on Medicaid. I haven’t found another job yet because they are not giving me a reference. Everybody I go to in the kosher industry somehow found out about what is going on. [Perhaps] they call up the OU and I get a bad reference. That’s it. I’m finished in that business.”

I hear a woman say, “So am I.”

Robert: “If I want to be in that business anyway. It’s a corrupt, crooked business.”

Woman: “What about me?”

Robert: “My wife too is working under the auspices of the OU in a place next door. They haven’t called her since this happened a month ago.

“She was a mashgiach in the Kosher Lunching club at YU, which is also under the Orthodox Union.”

Luke: “It sounds like you have been blackballed.”

Robert: “Absolutely.”

“I filed a complaint with the state of New York to get my job back. I’ll just take money if they don’t want to give me my job back.

“They don’t understand that I am willing to keep telling people about this until something happens. I’m not giving up. I have nothing else to do right now.

“The OU and the hospital is very clever at covering up their tracks. They thought that by getting rid of me, they would just silence me. That I would just go commit suicide. I don’t do things like that. I want the truth to be known. I want to go to all the newspapers. Some newspapers don’t want to run the story.”

“My termination notice says that I told people false claims about the hospital. How can they be false claims when I have the documentation to prove it? Everything I’m saying, I’ve got documents to prove it. I’ve got videos. Recordings. The notice about the cockroaches was issued by one of their exterminators. I dug it out of the trash.”

Using Sex To Sell Torah

I was doing some research on Rabbi Simcha Weinberg and found some interesting comments about his late uncle Noah Weinberg, the founder of Aish HaTorah.

I did not realize there was so much venom towards him.

I researched these attacks and heard this: You are quoting from a Lubavitch site who hated Reb Noach Weinberg, they think they have a monopoly on kiruv (outreach).

By the way how learned is the average Chabad shaliach (emissary)?

Here is the background. Rabbi and Mrs. Weinberg separated around a year before he got sick. They were not on the same wavelength for many years, she is very firmly right wing ULTRA orthodox, and he was too modern for her taste.

The separation was generally kept quiet, but certain people heard about and assumed that the “truth” must be sordid, and, depending on the version, had remarried. The rest is very silly, but all that had happened is that at first he moved out of the bedroom, into a different apartment in the same building and they were together for Shabbat, eventually he moved in with one of his children, but some evil people have decided that this would be a good excuse to accuse him of immorality.

In his own classes, he barely ever spoke about sex, and would not allow the word sex to be used in any publicity for a lecture, he wouldn’t let people sell sex even for outreach. He was once asked him if we could write S-X, he laughed and said no.

Rav Elya Svei was against anything slightly modern. That he attacked someone or something is of little meaning. If you don’t believe me, research what he said about YU, Rabbi Soloveitchik, Rabbi Norman Lamm.

Here’s one typical comment from this Chabad site:

Rabbi Weinberg’s work towards the goal of Kiruv was often accompanied by ziyyuf haTorah, the falsification of Torah which our sages teach is yehareg veAl yaavor. The teachings in the discovery seminar on the so called “Torah Code” which was at most the idiosyncratic and unproven idea of one prominent scholar (R’ Heme”d) given without context as a “proof.” Similarly, the discovery seminar promotes a false view of the textual perfection of the Torah (we do not know plene and defective spellings) which contradicts the Talmud and other sources up to our own time. Another damning example of ziyyuf haTorah is the minimization of dissenting views practiced by Kiruv people in general. The aforementioned examples all involve glossing over the words of many scholars, how much worse is this when, in order to secure funding, Aish promotes itself as a Zionistic yeshiva, which still hews to Haredi ideals? Worse yet is the idea that Rabbi Weinberg is famous for, the different levels of pleasure, which takes the Torah haKedosha and puts it in the tumahdikke keilim of pop psychology. This is worse than any distortion of the Torah UMadda camp, who never dared to equate RamHal with professional satisfaction or the Koach of Hiddush in Maharal with creative solutions in ones job as a computer programmer. I cannot imagine the punishment meted out to someone who rode roughshod over our Torah in such a manner for such questionable goals and monetary gain. When Rabbanim of old criticized Hildesheimer, JTS and even RIETS as being a factory for Rabbanim, they never imagined Aish, which puts out barely literate amei Haaretz as Rabbis in various communities. Honestly, this is worse than TT or YCT, as anyone who has met their respective musmakhim can attest to. Putting such people in Jewish communities in any capacity was a flabbergasting attempt at empire building at the expense of Torah; but all such mushmakhim need to know is the Aish.com pablum of Artscroll halacha and the five levels of pleasure. Those who criticize the mushrooms like Shmuely and others who do so much to make Judaism look like the Trash culture of America should realize that Aish was the original dark moist pile of excrement where these fungi sprung from. We should hope that with the passing of their leader, this blot on kelal yisroel will break into various warring factions and hopefully leave us all alone.

CHAIM BERLIN TRAGEDY POSTS:

Shlomo Carlebach (the singing rabbi) was also a pioneer of the kiruv movement and over time the complexity of his personality and approach has been put into greater perspective and has even been seriously questioned.

…Rav Noach and Aish spend a good part of their time talking about the levels of the “pleasures” of Judaism that sound more like the pleasures of sex and seduction? “Below the belt” indeed.

This was a factor that resulted in Rav Elya Svei, Rosh Yeshiva of the Philadelphia yeshiva and head of the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah of Agudah in America constantly criticising and attacking Rav Noach and Aish’s derech quite openly many times. Everyone in the Agudah Torah world knows that Rav Elya Svei kept up a constant barrage of criticism against Rav Noach and even blockaded and blocked Rav Yaakov Weinberg from sitting on the illustreous Moetzes GeDolei HaTorah because he (Rav Elya Svei) was totally disgusted and opposed to Rav Noach’s and Aish’s casual attitude and open willingness to discuss (and use?) sex to sell Yiddishkeit.

There MUST have been alot more that Rav Elya Svei was privy too about Rav Noach, Rav Yaakov, and Aish, if he kept up a constant barrage against them at any opportunity and a few times attacking Aish in public for their non-Torahdikke approach to teaching Torah using non-tzeniusdikke sexual material and innuendo that came right from the top, Rav Noach himself blessed and defended by his older brother Rav Yaakov Weinberg the son-in-law of Rav Ruderman. Rav Yaakov succeeded Rav Ruderman as Rosh Yeshiva of the Ner Israel yeshiva of Baltimore, but Rav Elya Svei still blocked and vetoed him from joining the Moetzes which Rav Yaakov never attained until his death because of Rav Elya Svei adamant opposition to the whole Rav Yaakov-Rav Noach-Aish HaTorah axis of wrong haskofas and sexual hashpo’es used to seduce in and mekarev unsuspecting freie young Jews who don’t know any better that goes against the very basic Torah notions of kedoshim tiheyu.

This entire subject is actually a huge rift in the Anerican Agudah world between the Weinberg brothers and Rav Yaakov Weinberg’s controversial sons (like Rabbi Simcha and Rabbi Matis who use explict sexual talk to do kiruv and who was forced to resign for his own sexual advances against students in his yeshivas) and the many allegations of sexual wrong-doing that led to the doors of Ner Israel that have wracked the Baltimore frum community for years now.

Rav Yaakov and Rav Noach were geniuses, no doubt about it, and they were able to create walls of silence around their peculiar personal predelictions, but they never managed to fool Rav Elya Svei who never ceased his war against them, their habits and their non-Torahdikke hashkofas in order to win over devotees to Aish, that Rav Noach ran more like a cult than as an educational institution

…When a rabbi goes to offices, campuses, synagogues and private homes to give talks and shiurim and to “counsel” he can’t take his wife along like Adam had Chava on his back and it’s not even women’s work.

The rebbetzins of the kiruv rabbis still have homes to runs and Yiddisher kinderlach to raise. So by and large kiruv is still a man’s job.

“I limit my interactions with women at work for obvious reasons, and I don’t see how the yetzer horo is less just because one is teaching hebrew.”

Good. But it’s not easy. If kiruv workers can’t control their “urge to merge” they should leave the field instead of causing inevitable havoc and shame.

“V’Or Someach b’South Africa Yochiach.”

This is very funny because Ohr Somayach and Aish HaTorah are actually two horns of one bull stemming from the Ner Israel yeshiva to which both were tied. rabbi Nota Schiller of Ohr Somayach is a Ner Israel (and Chaim Berlin) product, just like Rav Noach of Aish was. In fact Rav Noach founded Ohr Somayach in the first place and hired Nota Schiller to be a fundraiser and then Nota Schiller ousted Rav Noach. But that is all not to the point. The episode of Ohr Somayach in South Africa that you bring up here was done by a non-Ohr Somayach educated rabbi, the Religious Zionist Rabbi Lewis Furman, who was hired to help develop an Ohr Somayach branch and later it was found that he was seducing women along the way. He was let go but the question was never answered why the Ohr Somayach leaders never did anything about him earlier when they surely knew what he was doing by seducing lady congregants in his study (the same thing that Rabbi Mordechai Tendler was accused of doing and was expelled for from the RCA for that).

But one thing has nothing to do with the other. Over-all Ohr Somayach is a pretty boring and staid place while Aish has taken off and become much more successful and and its heart stood none other than Rav Noach, backed up by his brother Rav Yaakov, and the two of them were evidently up to no good the way Rav Elya Svei saw it otherwise he would not have been so vehement and adamant in his attacks and criticism of the Rav Yaakov-Rav Noach-Aish HaTorah axis of bad hashpo’es covered up by tens of millions of dollars from students and celebrities who sucked up the Aish version of hip Judaism laced with pleasure/mild sex-talk, sexual innuendo and soft core themes to get Jewish singles of the ignorant masses to pucker up and fall in love with Aish.

It might be a good way to sell romance novels or ladies perfume but not a way to sell Yiddishkeit.

‘Passionate Marriage: Keeping Love & Intimacy Alive In Committed Relationships’

This is the best psychology book I’ve read all year.

And it is the book I most need to read.

When I have love in my life, I put most of my emotions (providing that everything else in my life is in order) into that and I bob up and down depending on the success of my love life.

I don’t have a strong sense of self. I depend on the success of my love life to feel good about myself.

I’m up to page 151. Here’s an excerpt: “One property of marital systems is the vulnerability of increasing importance of one’s partner: your partner’s increasing importance over time naturally increases your vulnerability, which in turn fosters sexual boredom and low desire.”

Dr. Schnarch begins the book with this point — nobody is ready for marriage. Marriage makes you ready for marriage.

Agunah Hysteria?

Gadi Pickholz (of the Israel Fathers Rights Advocacy Council) emails:

Rabbi Eli Ben Dahan, Chairman of the Rabbinical Batei Din of Israel (official government Batei Din) contradicts assertions of Aguna hysteria and absurdly inflated numbers of claimed Agunot, as well as
reasons for delays in divorce proceedings.

A hearty kol hakavod to Rabbi Ben Dahan, who has championed bringing some reason and statistical accuracy to the Aguna situation.

Divorce has become a true Big Business and source of significant profit for the Rabbinate, even more so in America than Israel. The community has still not come to terms with the realities of multi-million dollar
fundraising within the Jewish community. One need look no further than Rabbi Steven Riskin’s multimillion dollar fundraising for his Aguna legal advocacy center, or the new fundraising initiatives of the Young Israel Rabbis.

Pointing out the reality of these statistics by no means suggests one is somehow “opposed” to assisting true agunot cases, any more than arguing that 35% of all women in NY have not, in fact, been raped –as
was asserted in the press by various American rape advocacy groups last year.

This is particularly alarming in the United States. In a nation of 7 million Jews there are 200 legitimate cases of Aguna. The suggestion that a population of less than 1.5 million religious Jews in the United States are suffering a “crisis” of thousands of Agunot is simply impossible, save as a key fundraising strategy.

We deeply regret, however, Rav Ben Dahan dodging in this all-female talk show forum discussing the FACT that according to the government’s statistics bureau there are now actually more MEN being denied a Get by their wives than women presently denied a Get by their husbands — unfortunately a very basic tactic of financial negotiations in both Israel and America.

Anyway, you can listen for yourself. Click here for the podcast.

Did I Forget Anything?

Helpful writes: Lukeford.net recognizes that many of our readers are (unlike our webmaster) employed productive members of society with both families and friends and thus precious little time to dedicate to watching the Moral Leader Cam live feed and so the following highlights of yesterday’s broadcast have been summarized for you go-getters. Enjoy.

6:32 pm A rather bedraggled looking man with a graying beard eats a bowl of gruel as he stares at a computer screen.

6:35 pm The hermit then goes into a doorway in the back of a dank apartment and returns with a foamy tooth brush and brushes his teeth for an interminable amount of time.

6:42 pm The elderly gentleman returns with dental floss and proceeds to floss for the camera.

6:45 pm Lights out.

The Other Side Of The Rabbi Leib Tropper Story

ST emails: Dear Luke, you have given much attention to the Tropper scandal, and rightfully so I think it would be nice to at least show a little of the other side of the story. From the blogs it would seem as is there is no other side, but in fact in the chareidi world, and I’m referring to the Chareidi world that in principle does not have Internet (Yes they do exist in large numbers!) there is a view that by many is assumed as the obvious. That view is not the view being shown on any blog that I have come across. So being that I have always found you to be someone which frequently shows other views even though it may not be yours, I’d like to request that you post this message.

An OPEN LETTER to Rabbi Daniel Eidenson of Har Nof Jerusalem. Rabbi Eidenson has in recent years been in the forefront in trying to bring down Rabbi Tropper. He has been doing this through his blog which for the past few years has primarily been focusing on reporting anything negative on Rabbi Tropper. Rabbi Eidenson through his blog was one of the first to report and spread the word about the current scandal regarding Rabbi Tropper. His negative statement’s regarding Rabbi Tropper have recently been quoted on many other blogs. He is very much ‘on top’ of the current scandal, and is very often the one to come up with new negative information for other blogs to post.

Dear Rabbi Eidenson,
A few questions for you:
1. Do you know for a fact that the voice on the audio is Tropper’s voice? If yes, can you tell how you know this.
2. Even if it is his voice, who said these are not cut n paste sentences from months of recorded conversations with various people put together as a frame (listen to the audio W/O the woman’s voice, its not half as bad)?
3. Does you realise that there is no dispute as to who released these tapes. And A) that person has a very strong hate for R’ Tropper. B) He has been accused of threatening to kill him. C) He has been accused of threatening to throw him out of a 9 story bldg. D) He has claimed that he is Mashiach. This has been documented. E) His wife is a non Jew with a very shaky geirus at best. F) Many in his family claim that he is not stable and is on drugs. G) There is a million dollar lawsuit to which Tropper has been called to testify against this person.
4. Do you realize that the above said person by the name of Guma Aguiar is a billionaire who has unlimited amount of funds to bring down Tropper, and could have easily paid good money to someone to talk on the tapes, or paid big money to bug the phones and do a cut n paste job with this women talking as if Tropper was talking to her. Or a combination of both tactics in making these tapes? Lets not forget that Hollywood movies are totally made like that from beginning to end. Cut and paste, impersonations, etc. nothing a BILLIONAIRE couldn’t get done if he hated someone as much as Guma hates Tropper.
5….[It was a slam on Shannon Orand deleted by Luke Ford.]
6.DO YOU REALISE THAT THIS WOMEN IS AN OLD FRIEND OF GUMAS?
Its not so hard to connect the dots.
Although Rabbi Tropper did release a statement today regarding the scandal, it was a very “pareve” statement, and he did not admit to anything other than violating issues of modesty. Now, of course one can try and derive from the statement that he is in fact admitting guilt by not denying the allegations, and by in fact actually admitting to ‘partial wrong doing’. The fact of the matter is that after the statement was released Rabbi Tropper has openly said the accusations are totally false and were fabricated to smear him. Therefore claiming that he admits that he did wrong to answer the above questions is is a non answer, since as of now he is denying it. In addition to this he has many reputable Rabonim and Roshei Yeshiva standing on his side. I highly doubt they would do that if: A. they thought he was guilty, and B. He was admitting his guilt.
It is known that that there are many believing that the allegations on Tropper (which you in your great Tzidkus had a hand in spreading) are false…even after hearing the tapes. In addition you yourself have raised some points in your post “the case for Rabbi Troppers defense” which leave room for many to believe that he may NOT be guilty of all the Lashon Horah/ Motzi Shem Rah being spread by Balei Lashon Horah.
There are many who have questioned this blog, here and elsewhere, as being full of Lashon Horah.
I see you quote R’ Shternbuch as saying “there is no problem to say that Tropper is a menuval or a sheigitz (Megila 25) and in fact it should be publicized that he is a menuval.” Although I have not heard him say this myself, and frankly I find this hard to believe that he would give you such a heter (I plan on asking him if he really said that as soon as I can), I will assume for the sake of this letter that you are not lying. So if that is case, the question is: how can someone Pasken give a heter to say lashon Horah and/or Motzi Shem Rah, both of which are life and death (clearly that is the case with Tropper- if people will except this gossip, he is finished) based on a Gemara (megila 25, as you said) when the mefarshim (see Chofetz Chaim Klal 7, #4, and Be’er Mayim Chaim #8) there speak at length what the gemarah means. And by no means in anyone’s rational interpretation does this Tropper story come close to the criteria!
I also see that you took the liberty to pasken on your own based on you’re convenient interpretation of other gemarah’s etc., CONTRARY to what is ruled by the Chofetz Chaim in his sefer on Lashon Horah very explicitly.
Now there are 2 possibilities. 1) R’ Shterbuch never said this, and you made this up. And you twisted the Gemara completly avoiding the poskim to fit your needs. Just as the reform and conservative do with the Bible. And just as you have accused others of doing, rendering you a total hypocrite. On top of that, this renders you a fraud in portraying yourself as one who is very zealous for the Torah, and on the other hand you have no regard for the terrible sin of Lashon Horah etc. which is unquestionably far worse then anything you are accusing Tropper of.
2) R’ Shternbuch did say this based on fabricated facts that you fed him out of your obssesive hate for Tropper.
I find it hard to believe that R’ Shternbuch would not know what the mefarshim say on that Gemarah and Pasken against the Chofetz Chaim who is the unquestionable Posik Achron when it comes to laws pertaining to Lashon Horah.
As for you, it might be worthwhile to actually LEARN the Sugyas Hagemarah before you use it for distorted purposes, and showing everyone your lack of ability to learn a Gemarah.
So if the whole story was indeed a set-up, you had a hand in ruining someones life. You had a hand in ruining the life of his wife and children (who I’m sure are suffering very much). And although you might be giddy now at seeing the downfall of someone who you have made your enemy (Your happiness is evident…). Shlomo Hamelech said: Do not be happy when your enemy falls…For G-D will be upset with you and will turn his anger away from him [and put onto you, (mefarshim)]. (Proverbs24 17-18) I believe Shlomo Hamelech. Maybe you will end up being another proof to his wisdom.

What Would A Rabbi Need To Do To Conquer Ramat Zion?

John emails: Hi Luke,

I appreciated your revealing piece on Ramat Zion. A friend was thinking of applying to them (as a rabbinic candidate) through the Conservative movement, and your piece raised some red flags for me, given their treatment of the previous rabbi. (Funny thing is, in their advertisement for a rabbi, they just say they are “without rabbinic leadership”–they don’t mention they fired the guy less than half way through his contract!) Do you think a rabbi coming in stands a chance of success? What would s/he have to do to be successful?

A Walk On The Wild Side

It was April 1, 1894 when a man with no name walked into Dodge.

Yes, he walked in. He didn’t ride in. But he was no April Fool’s joke.

He didn’t have a gun. Only a water pistol. And he looked so lost that everyone shunned him except a whore named KJ.

He thought she was a gift from God, and he kept believing that all of his life, even when the preachers told him she was from the Devil.

She felt that he was an outcast like her, and so she took him in hand, marched him up to her quarters, brought him food and water, then put him in a tub and washed him like a momma. She even let him play with a rubber ducky. He was so happy. His momma had died when he was an infant and even at age 27, he was still desperate for nurturing.

He stood naked before her in the tub and she dried him off, took him to bed, and anointed his feet with oil, wiping them with her hair. She made him whole, if only for a night.

The next day, she got him a job at the whorehouse. He mopped floors, scrubbed tubs, washed sheets, served drinks, and made everyone feel good by his abjectness. He was so low that you could only feel high by comparison.

In his early years in Dodge, he wanted so badly to be accepted that it was pathetic. He just radiated neediness. It repelled people. The only ones who accepted him were the whores and the evangelicals (whose headquarters were called “The Fire of Christ”).

Dodge was a rough city in these days. There were two warring camps — those who loved whores and those who hated whores.

In his spare time, he liked to write. He wrote stories about the whores. He got them printed up and sold them for a penny each at the bar.

The madam liked him and gave him a job performing with the girls, pretending to deflower them while the customers watched.

For the first few weeks, he felt like a man. More of a man than he had ever felt before. He stopped writing and devoted himself to ****ing.

Then one day, KJ said to him after a session, “You’re better than this.”

He thought about that for a while, and then told the madam he was done performing. He preferred to dust and to clean and to write his stories, which he now published in a weekly newsletter sold around town. He called it, “Your Moral Leader”.

If there was one advantage he had, it was that everybody underestimated him (except for KJ). When they bumped into him, they didn’t even say I’m sorry. When they saw him in the street, they didn’t nod. They just looked through him as though he didn’t exist. They didn’t even bother talking about him behind his back. He wasn’t a threat to anyone so he wasn’t worthy of gossip.

He didn’t get invited to the cool parties and he wasn’t welcome in any of the fashionable homes. He was welcome, for a while, at “The Fire of Christ” church.

They were the only church in town truly interested in helping sinners. They were the only church that gave step-by-step instructions on how to lead a good life. Their most famous pamphlet was called “The Five Levels of Pleasure”.

The Fire cleaned people up for a living. Even whores and gunslingers. They got them married. They got them mortgages. They got them to send their children to Christian schools.

One day the pastor pulled him aside for a private chat. “You need to stop working at that whorehouse,” said the pastor. “You need to stop writing about whores. You’re a smart man. You can find something else to do. If you don’t mend your ways, you’ll have to stop coming around here. You have a choice. Leave the whores behind or leave us behind.

“Who’s publishing your book, by the way?”

“Prometheus Books,” he said. “They’re an atheist press.”

The two of them enjoyed a knowing smile about the foolishness of atheism.

“I’ll clean up my life,” he promised. “Honest injun.”

The days went by and he found he couldn’t leave the whores behind. His bond with KJ was too tight. So he stopped going to church.

A couple of months later, the pastor called him in. “You need to choose right now between whores and Christ,” said the pastor.

“I guess I’ll choose the whores,” he said and walked outside feeling very alone. He didn’t know why he had chosen as he had. He just knew that being who he was, he couldn’t do anything else.

He loved KJ. Every morning after her shift was finished, they would get together and write stories and read them aloud to each other. She told him the secrets of the leaders of the town. He loved this.

Even though he had a very low social status, he yearned to climb. He yearned to do something magnificent for God. He yearned for greatness. He yearned to rub shoulders with the elite.

He had a problem. He only wanted to hang out with those who were above him in social status. He didn’t like playing tennis with anyone who was at his level, or, God forbid, below him. He only wanted to play with those who were better. They pushed him to be more than he was and he loved reaching for the stars, even while mucking out the stables.

He stumbled into gossip as a great social equalizer. KJ taught him how the town really worked.

At first, he didn’t know what to do with the information. He just stored it up. Then he started slipping hints of the things he knew into his stories and they started selling better.

Soon he was able to quit work and concentrate on his writing.

Whenever anyone threatened him for what he wrote, he explained it was purely fiction. And he looked so dumb, so pathetic and low, it was hard to feel angry at him.

As the months went by, he learned who he could write about obliquely and who he had to leave completely alone. He learned that if he wrote about people who were generally loathed, he’d get so much support that it would more than counterbalance the heat he’d receive from his victims.

And nobody could challenge him to a duel because he only had a water pistol. And a bad case of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

One day he ran into his former pastor at the post office. “I’m mad, bad and dangerous to know,” he said with a leer.

The pastor took offense. “Let’s get down to cases, Sunny Jim. Your description of yourself is laughable. For the sake of accuracy, ‘Fey, gay and worthless to know’ is much better. You’re a fair-dinkum fraud, and one of these days I’ll gut you from stem to sternum, mate. Don’t think it won’t happen, you bloody ponce.”

He walked away feeling good. Feeling powerful. He had made the man of Christ lose his temper and use some words that were very un-Christian.

“This is power,” he thought. “Words are power. Information is power. There’s going to be a new sheriff in town, and he’s going to get all the girls.”

As the months went by, he grew bolder in his writing. He exposed more hypocrites. He presented it as doing God’s will. He cited the Talmudic tractate of Yoma 86B.

He began getting advertising from the major stores in Dodge. He at first subtly, and then not so subtly, let all the big shots in town know that they were either a target or a source.

He began publishing every day and sold his sheets for a dime each. He learned to locate all the disputes in town and then told each side in successive days, stirring the cauldron and putting the witches brew into print.

He was careful to only publish what he could get away with. He was careful to maintain alliances and he didn’t mind slipping away from town for a few days when things got really hot. He made sure to present himself in print as only the most humble servant of the truth, as God’s messenger delivering divine karma, and he was never happier than when he got his former pastor tarred, feathered and run out of town for a sexual indiscretion with an underage girl.

When the clergy of Dodge organized regular marches outside the home of a man who wouldn’t grant his wife a divorce through their Christian law court (the man was willing to give a divorce through a pastor in the next town), he protested in his daily newsletter. He asked how would the clergy like it if their home addresses were publicized when they made unpopular decisions?

When the clergy wanted to certify business ethics at every establishment in Dodge, he protested that the clergy had no expertise in determining business ethics. While simply abiding by the law of the land was enough for the clergy to grant an ethics badge, he pointed out that business ethics were far more complicated, and that one could sometimes do more good not following the law of the land than by always following the law of the land.

The certification drive fizzled.

When a bishop of the largest church in Dodge lost his temper, struck a congregant and called him a “f—er”, he publicized the affair in his newsletter and the bishop was transferred to another parish.

It was only gradually and over the course of years that the people of Dodge came to realize that there was a new sheriff in town. And the little blighter carried a water pistol.

‘Got A Phone #?’

That was the header on one email I got today.

And what was in the body of the email? Nothing.

Here are some etiquette tips for when you email strangers asking for things. First of all, introduce yourself. Then say something about how you came to be sending this email. Then state what you want.

Here is a sample email that might work on me and others like me:

Dear Mr. Ford,

I came across your blog last week when I was researching American Jewish literature.

I read several of your interviews with some of my favorite novelists and I had some questions for you.

I am a third year student at Yeshiva University majoring in English. I plan to become a lawyer one day.

This subject of Jewish literature is a passion of mine. I am going to be in Los Angeles next week. I wondered if I could take you to a kosher lunch?

Yours sincerely,

Shlomo Goldberg
