Are There That Many Racists Out There?

Yes, I believe there are. I believe that about a quarter of non-black Americans do not like black people and that most of these people vote Republican.

I think a significant reason for the amount of racist vitriol online is that any comments remotely smacking of racism is such a huge social sin. Saying anything racist is about the worst thing you can say in middle-class polite society.

Report from the Chicago Sun-Times:

“Lock this monkey up in a cage next to Bubba. Go get the other monkeys in his gang and lock them up as well.”

“Blacks are far too lazy and co-dependent on whites to ever change — if they did who’d pay for their babies and food?”

“If it happened on Mars, I’d say he was a Martian. But it happened in Logan Square, so I said he was an illegal. Wanna bet?”

Who would write something like this? Some of our faithful, foul-mouthed readers, that’s who.

One of my jobs as a Web editor at the Sun-Times is to moderate the reader comments on every article — and man is it a messy job. Are there really that many racist people out there? Would they really say such appalling things in everyday conversation?

Handicapped Hatzalah Members

Jack emails: Would you want a person who is so disabled that they need a handicap permit responding to your emergency?

Isn’t the point of Hatzalah (Jewish ambulance service) to be able to respond quickly? How can a person who is so disabled that he needs a handicap parking tag able to respond quickly to an emergency?

I drove by the Ness Center on Whitworth and saw a Camry with Hatzalah
decals all over the car and a handicap parking tag hanging from the
mirror. I think you should investigate. Walk over there and see for yourself and then email Hatzalah and ask if they care to comment.

Unless this can all be explained by some one who is just trying to
park where ever he wants so he got a handicap card. You would think that the Spinka ordeal would have taught us to know better!

LOU EMAILS: “Luke, I know of one Hatzalah member who drives a Camry and recently had reconstructive surgery on both of his knees. I even know his name, but would rather not have it published because his selflessness should not cause him to be scrutinized. The man remains devoted to, and active in, Hatzalah. In the middle of minyan, this man gets Hatzalah alerts, and literally hobbles out of the shul to save peoples’ lives, always with a smile.”

Rabbi Tropper Is Back!

One of the signs of a successful penitent, our tradition teaches us, is that he is able to forgive himself.

By this standard, Rabbi Leib Tropper is a tzaddik!

Rabbi Daniel Eidensohn blogs:

Contrary to those who claim that Tropper is finished, he has been busy organizing his Maimonides Retreat progam this week in Monsey.

Horizons

Recognizing the potential of exciting campus programs like Maimonides and Heritage Scholars to attract students with a genuine interest in Jewish learning, we’ve created a second tier of programming. The goal: to provide young men [we hope to develop a program for women as interest grows] with the opportunity to deepen their exploration of the vibrancy and intellectual stimulation of classical Judaism in a fun and enriching atmosphere.

Shut Down Tropper’s Eternal Jewish Fraud organization?

Here’s the petition:

I the undersigned as well as all my fellow sane Jews urge to shut down EJFit’s doors which was founded and headed by “Rabbi” Tropper, who for many years has allegedly been misappropriating funds allocated for poor people, and lining his pockets with it. He has also allegedly used that money to bribe countless politicians and Rabbi’s and last but not least, he has abused the very people he claims to help.. namely baal tshuva’s and geirim who depend on him for guidance.

Most recently he was caught red handed on tape http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KlacLILZ5Kw pressuring a woman who trusted him as her Rabbi, to engage in sexual acts for his own satisfaction, and as if this was not enough, he pressured her against her will to sleep with other men for payment. This is known as prostitution! telling her “if you fulfill my needs, I will fulfill your needs, and you need a conversion”

See: http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/tal_mood_for_love_6f0OJMppsB6fGSrhG5vq7M

A man who engages in such behavior should not be allowed to have any leadership position, and his organizations should be shut down and not allowed to remain opened. EJF and Tropper have already done more than enough damage. Damage to every Jew and damage to Jewish reputations worldwide, causing a chillul hashem that we have not been exposed to in recent memory.

This is an opportune time for us to make our fellow Jews, aware of the reprehensible nature of Rabbi’s who practice such blackmail cover ups.
Gedolei Hador have said is a mitzvah to expose and publicize the evil acts of this person.
We will no longer stick our heads in the sand. We will be heard!

Also let us help the victim of his crimes. A person who trusted him for guidance in Judaism, instead he took advantage of her, now he made sure she cannot ever become a Jew , her geirus has been denied. Now her community being naive to the situation have ostracized her and her children. She was subject to unspeakable crimes by Tropper, and there are many other victims out there. She broke free from of Tropper while risking her life and her court case against a child moleter. Hasn’t she suffered enough? To donate and help her legally please paypal [email protected]

Looking For A Sephardic Cantor?

Yisroel Kituv ([email protected]) emails:

Hey!

First I’ll present myself. My name is Yisroel Elituv, and I’m an agent of a group of students who learn at a Sephardic cantorship school in Israel.

The school exists about seven years already. Our school is basically similar to a regular musical school but different. Our students are very expert and qualified.

First, our students learn the based material of the music theory, everything from simple notes reading, up to beautiful and authentic tunes of the Moroccan prayers.

How all of that deals with you!? So..

I read your article “Synagogue Ratings”. I was very impressed and excited.

I have a vision of setting our graduate student as cantors all over the Diaspora.

I thought to myself how I’m going to do that, until I found you.

When I saw your particular description, I immediately knew that you

How Many Plooks Before You’re Out?

I know this rabbi who was caught with child pornography on his computer and he lost his job. And whenever we’re together, he gives me divrei Torah.

In fact, every rabbi I know who has been convicted of a sex crime or has lost his job for sexual misbehavior feels perfectly entitled to lecture me (and anyone who will listen) about Torah.

I need to know how many sexual scandals an Orthodox rabbi can have before he can no longer deliver divrei Torah from the pulpit of Aish HaTorah or any other Orthodox shul? I need to have this information before I become an Orthodox rabbi (the dues are low and the spiritual benefits unbounded). I want to be clear about how much plooking outside of the bounds of propriety and Jewish law I can do before I can no longer lecture people about right and wrong.

I realize this is not a particularly spiritual inquiry, but I am not a particularly spiritual guy. I’m just your average convert to Orthodox Judaism who has heard all the Torah and read all the Artscroll books about holiness but still wants to know the facts on the ground.

I’m thinking about one rabbi connected to Aish HaTorah (but not an employee) who seems to come into Pico-Robertson annually and delivers Torah lectures at Aish and Bnai David-Judea and other holy places. He’s a famous rabbi. He speaks eloquently about holy subjects. And he got fired from his prominent position at a holy Jewish job a few years back for getting caught en flagrante delicto with his secretary.

Exactly how many secretaries can he plook before he can no longer stand up at Aish HaTorah on Shuvuot and lecture people about Torah?

Please understand that I do not have a position here. I don’t want this guy exiled from the pulpit. I don’t want him exiled from anywhere. I believe in compassion and forgiveness as much as Barack Obama does.

Perhaps you should know a little about my history so you know where I’m coming from. I marched with Martin Luther King in Selma, Alabama, so African-Americans could have the right to vote. As a kipa-wearing Orthodox Jew, I participated in the Stonewall riots in New York for the glory of God and the dignity of all of His children. I marched with Harvey Milk so that gays could no longer be denied housing simply because of their different way of expressing love. Nobody did more than I did to try to prevent the passing of Proposition 8 in California. I was standing on stage with Barack Obama when he accepted the Democratic nomination and he thanked me in his acceptance speech.

I don’t have any agenda here except to understand how much plooking out of bounds a rabbi can do and still deliver Torah lectures.

I am not a man lacking in bonhomie. I can appreciate how a powerful rabbi can see his secretary as a perquisite of his position. I have found numerous secretaries quite attractive over the years and there but for the grace of God go I, but I don’t get up in shul and lecture people about God and His moral demands. Instead I lead a quiet life. I bother nobody and nobody bothers me.

I am a simple Jew with simple needs. All I want is clarity.

I don’t judge a rabbi for porking his secretary, but I do get the giggles when he stands up in shul to preach about Torah. There he goes tying together obscure rabbinic commentaries and all I think about is him shuckeling with his secretary. Perhaps other Jews are more elevated than me. Perhaps they are on a higher madrega.

PS. How many marriages do you get before you’re out as a moral leader? To lose one wife may be regarded as a misfortune; to lose both looks like carelessness.

Lou emails:

A true classic. One of your best. “Im just your average convert to Orthodox Judaism who . . . wants to know about the facts on the ground.” What a great line.

About the rabbi who was caught plooking his secretary — I heard it was a divorcee who attended his illustrious house of worship and sought rabbinic counsel, but maybe she worked there as a secretary too.

Gary emails:

Luke:

If you want to be a real cowboy you need speak like a cowboy not
simply go out and purchase a cowboy suit

The proper term is to shtup. Yiddish really is such a marvelous
language. You can often hear the sin as you say the word, as in how
many members wives did the rabbi shtup this year?

Didn’t your parents always speak yiddish at home when the children
weren’t supposed to understand?it is marvelous incentive to master a
language quickly in youth.

“Plook” is just as Jewish a term as “shtup.” “Plook” is Ladino.

P.P.S. You can make a compelling case that sexual misconduct in the rabbinate should be one-strike-and-you’re-out. I find it hard to listen to the Torah lectures of a rabbi who’s fallen in this way. Perhaps such rabbis should find another line of work. Perhaps sell insurance?

One rabbi in this category told me that there is no precedence in the Jewish tradition for such a harsh penalty. Well, there’s no precedence in the Jewish tradition for removing someone from the rabbinate for having sex with his mother or with his dog.

How much congregational sex can an Orthodox rabbi have before he’s no longer invited to speak in Orthodox shuls? An increasing number of Orthodox rabbis I talk to about this say one-strike-and-you’re-out.

Let’s say you run a Jewish school and you have girls complaining that a teacher makes sexual come-ons and lets his hands brush against them.

Do you take action and let the teacher go? Or do you wait until he sexually penetrates a student?

I see significant degrees of distinction between a rabbi having sex with someone who he wields power over (he’s converting her, she wants a divorce, she’s come for counseling, she’s a congregant, she’s not a congregant but she attends many of his lectures) and someone he has no power over.

Yet, a rabbi is a rabbi to anybody. If you present yourself to the world as a rabbi, then you have to take responsibility if you fall into forbidden sex (I don’t include masturbation in this).

Are sexual sins different? Well, people are much more interested in sexual sins. They talk about it more. I think this represents a reality that every community has sexual mores and when you violate them, people talk about it more than violation of most other mores.

Most males’ attachment to monogamy is fragile. Men by nature do not sexually seclude themselves to one woman and stand by her and help support their offspring. Men by nature screw around.

When there are threats to family security through adultery, it is a big deal and the community has every reason to be alarmed.

I Sometimes Look At Women With Lust

Not all women, God forbid, just the hotties.

It’s a struggle. I know it is against the Torah.

Here’s what I do to minimize my looking at women with lust:

* I take several cold showers a day
* I daven three times a day
* I say 100 blessings a day
* I study Torah
* I surround myself with Orthodox Jews
* I do yoga
* I keep busy
* I focus on my noble goals of Alexander Technique, investigative journalism, finding a wife, financial abundance
* I immerse myself in literature and think about its lofty ideas
* I don’t look at porn
* I try not to walk behind women or walk between them or shake their unclean hands
* I watch very little TV

Report:

OPINIONS: The Gemara quotes a Beraisa that relates that once, when Raban Shimon ben Gamliel saw an idolatrous woman who was beautiful, he exclaimed, “How abundant are Your works, Hashem!” (Tehilim 104:24). The Gemara later asks how was it permitted for him to look at her? The Torah commands, “v’Nishmarta mi’Kol Davar Ra” — “You shall guard yourself from any evil thing” (Devarim 23:10); this verse requires a person to protect himself from seeing things (“Mistakel”) which later might cause him to have forbidden thoughts. The Gemara answers that the case of Raban Shimon ben Gamliel was different, because it was a case of “Keren Zavis,” a corner. RASHI explains that when a person turns a corner, exiting one alley and entering another, he might suddenly cross paths with another person (who is turning the opposite way) and he will not have time to close his eyes. Raban Shimon ben Gamliel did not see the woman approaching and did not have a chance to close his eyes.

What are the parameters of the prohibition against looking at a woman? (See also Insights to Shabbos 149:2, Bava Basra 168:1.)

(a) The S’MA (CM 154:14) explains that there is also difference between the act of “Histaklus” and the act of “Re’iyah.” “Histaklus” refers to seeing by chance, without intention to look at the person or thing. “Re’iyah” refers to intentionally looking at a person or thing. According to the S’ma, it seems that it is prohibited even to briefly glance at a woman, and one should be careful to avoid situations in which he might need to glance at a woman.

(b) Many others dispute this view. The BEIS YOSEF (OC 229) writes that the definitions of “Histaklus” and “Re’iyah” are the opposite of what the S’ma writes. The Gemara in Chagigah (16a) explains, according to one opinion, that when the Mishnah there (11b) says that “anyone who does not have compassion for the honor of his Creator is better off having not been created,” it is referring to one who looks at a rainbow. The TUR (ibid.) rules that it is prohibited to “gaze profusely at a rainbow” (“Mistakel Bo Harbei”). The Beis Yosef quotes the AVUDRAHAM who writes that the ROSH was asked how is it permitted to look at a rainbow in order to recite the special blessing for a rainbow if one is not supposed to look at it? The Rosh replied that “Ro’eh” (seeing) is not the same as “Mistakel” (gazing, which is prohibited). He describes “Mistakel” as an act of continuously and intently looking at the object. According to this, the Gemara here, too, is prohibiting only gazing (“Mistakel”) at a woman, but not glancing or looking in passing.

The MAGEN AVRAHAM (OC 225:20) discusses a similar question regarding looking at an evildoer. The Gemara says that it is prohibited to gaze (“Mistakel”) at the face of a Rasha. What does this mean? The Magen Avraham explains that this means that one is not allowed to take a long look, concentrating on his image and figure. One is allowed to “look” (“Ro’eh”) in passing at a Rasha, though.

From my live cam:

Khunrum emails: Luke:

Although I don’t like to preach, this is a special time of the year for Christian and Jew alike. I am appalled at your insensitivity during these, the Holiest dates on the calendar. All we ever hear from you is ME! ME! ME!…What have you done to cheer up your fellow man this Holiday Season?. My dear wife, a Buddhist, spent a day wrapping presents at Covenant House for those less fortunate than ourselves. Friends will be carving turkeys for the homeless on Christmas day. I’ve been handing out a few bucks here and there to downtrodden guys I pass whilst riding my bike around town.

Frankly Luke, when I read “I am back in the spotlight!” I want to shout “WHO GIVES A %$#&.

A federal investigation started 18 months ago after the first victims started to complain. The heads of the family are still free but the loop is closed and very soon the victims will be able to start suing.

Meanwhile the victims are welcome to join the community and use its support.

The Shalhevet Graduate

A worried Jewish mother emails:

I am wondering what is it about the Shalhevet students groomed by Dr. Jerry Friedman. They remind me of cult. Most of them are:

– Not Frum. The kippot are off totally. Naked heads even when they walk with the parents into a Jewish place.
– Tolerant to drug use.
– Dating non-Jewish girls. Includes bring them home for family gathering including sleep overs. Parents are upset and don’t know what to do as they don’t want to break ties with their kids.
– Stay in close ties with other Shalhevet graduates and make few new friends in college. It serves as a support group.
– Remain very loyal to Jerry Friedman. Talk about how rich he is and don’t really care about his financial misconduct at the school. So much for Lawrence Kohlberg’s moral education.
