Finding Relief From Back Pain With Alexander Technique

NPR reports:

Research suggests an alternative therapy called Alexander Technique may be an effective way to treat back pain.

Rodriguez first tried massage, chiropractic, and powerful pain killers. But finding a remedy for back pain can be a lot like a guessing game.

He says it was only through Alexander Technique lessons that he trained his body to move in a way that eased his aching back. Alexander Technique is a series of posture lessons, devised by a 19th century Australian actor named F.M. Alexander who had troubles with chronic laryngitis whenever he performed.

“It’s a feeling of working with yourself from the inside out,” says Rodriguez. “If you know you’re twisting a certain way and using too much force, it’s easy enough to know, Let that go.”

In particular, Joe now holds himself differently during his solos because of Alexander Technique.

“I know that I can just sort of be on my sits bones, instead of a funny arch with my stomach pushed out or my back arched in some strange way,” says Rodriguez.

The New York Times Starts Its Paywall

I’ve used the NYTimes.com as my home page since I got my first real computer in July 1997.

Today I switched my home page to DrudgeReport.com.

I subscribed to the Wall Street Journal online until 2002. Other than that, I can’t imagine paying for news online when there are so many free choices available.

This Week’s Torah Portion Is Parashat Tazria (Leviticus 12:1-13:59)

I discuss the weekly Torah portion with Rabbi Rabbs every Monday at 7pm PST on my live cam and on YouTube.

This week’s we study Parashat Tazria (Leviticus 12:1-13:59).

Watch the videos.

* After a woman has a baby girl, she is tame (impure) for two weeks but only for one week after a baby boy. Are all male-female differences in the Torah anti-woman? Does the Torah look down on the birth of girls? Do Jews?

* Seven days after a boy so she can attend the bris.

* How long do married folks wait to get it on again after the wife gives birth? Does it ever feel tight again after she’s been all ripped up in there? Once a woman gives birth, does her husband get as much love?

* Clothing and houses can not get sick. Chapter 13 is not a medicinal chapter. This is ritual, not pathology. The scale disease is not leprosy, in fact it is no known skin disease.

* The Torah puts the community before the individual. Folks with scale disease are removed from the community until they’re cured.

* So are these cures for skin diseases? Do you think they might work today?

* The only bodily emissions that pollute are semen and menstrual blood. Making a poo is not impure.

* What are the best ways to avoid wet dreams? Is it true that every sperm is sacred, every sperm is good, every sperm is needed in your neighborhood? Let the pagans waste theirs on the dusty soil, God will make them pay for each sperm that can’t be found.

* The entire corpus of rituals is out in the open so the priest can never say, slip me some gold or sleep with me and then I’ll cleanse you. Spiritual seekers don’t have to sleep with me to get my awesome insights. All of the details of my life and thought are on my blog. Clergy who’ve done terrible things to kids have said to them, this is how you will come closer to God. It is a good line and it kills me I can’t use it (on adults).

* What are the conjugal obligations of Torah scholars such as ourselves to our future wives?

* It’s rare in the Torah that it says this is a law for all time. One example is with Yom Kippur. Perhaps many of the laws were just meant to be temporary. Perhaps the Reform are right?

Greg Leake emails: Hi Luke, ching-chong ling-long!

Here is a list of questions that I hope you and Rabbs will think about answering on your show. Possibly this will not fit into your venue, which I completely understand. However, i would find your answers interesting, and I think other listeners would find your answers interesting as well.

1) If you had the money and could live any place in the world you wished to, where would you live? What kind of housing would you live in at this location?
2) If you could sleep with any actress in her prime who has been on the silver screen in the last 50 years, who would it be? (I think I would have to go with Grace Kelly.)
3) If you could work in any profession or role that exists, what kind of profession would it be?
4) a) Luke, if you had not come down with chronic fatigue syndrome, what do you think you would be doing by now?
b) Rabbs, when you chose between medication that would alleviate your condition and Judaism, what do you think would have happened had you chosen to alleviate your condition?
5) Does either one of you feel that there was a girl in your past who qualifies for “the one who got away?” .. the girl you look back on and feel she was the one you should have married and did not?
6) When you look into your past, do you ever see something that looms in your mind as a conspicuous mistake or misjudgment, and if you had not taken the road you did, your life would have been very different?
7) When you look back, is there some opportunity that you didn’t follow up on and now believe that it may have been your big chance that slipped through your fingers?
8) If you could change one major national policy in the US, what would it be, and what would you change it to?
9) If you could completely do away with and dismiss a personal characteristic that you find does not serve you and yet you cannot shake it, what would that characteristic be?
10) If there were a couple of Jewish thinkers of the last 50 years that you could have had conversations with and enjoyed being friends with and learned from, who would those thinkers be? Likewise, who would be two non-Jewish thinkers of the last 50 years that you that you could have had conversations with and enjoyed being friends with and learned from?

If you don’t wish to include the questions, then just kick them out. If for whatever reason some questions have to to do with things you don’t want to go into, find and dandy. These are the kinds of things I sometimes ask myself, and I imagine your viewer would be curious about your thoughts on these matters.

Prager H1: In Wisconsin, the public service unions, having lost the electoral and legislative battles, have turned to the courts. They are working to unseat a conservative Wisconsin judge. If they succeed, they may still win. The Left never stops. We can’t… Protests are raging in a very unlikely place – Syria. Could Assad, a thug who is the son of a thug, really be in trouble? One can hope… In Egypt, freedom-loving, Facebook/Twitter revolutionaries have been muscled out of by the Muslim Brotherhood. That didn’t take long. What do you say now, Mr. Friedman?

How To Spot The Orthodox From Birth

We’re talking FFBs (Frum From Birth).

Heshy Fried writes about how he spots FFBs in the San Francisco Bay Area:

They come into shul late and immediately daven mincha without a siddur or saying ashrei first.

They go through a whole shabbos lunch without touching their napkin, let alone placing it on their lap right after washing.

If entering shul during kedusha, they stop right in their tracks rather than walking to their seat

They mutter ya’ale vayavo out loud to remind everyone around them to say it

They jump for joy at the sight of moscato diasti in a blue bottle (especially in the Bay where everyone is into wine and it’s hard to eat a table with cruddy stuff)

They say something non-politically correct out loud (BT’s are hush-hush about stuff like eating non-organically grown rice)

They serve soda at their meals.

They call junk food – nosh!

They are talking during shul, learning during laining and always looking at whoever comes in. (they are bored)

They are comfortable enough to pace back forth in the back of the shul during davening (such a hocker thing to do)

They say things like “our minhag is”

They don’t have PhD’s (it seems like everyone else does)

They don’t eat vegetables – beyond potatoes (unless they are modern orthodox or something).

They serve cake at the main meal and call it kugel.

They never say chavorai when benching with a mezumen. (it’s very un-PC not to include the ladies you know)

They clop the bimah when something extra needs to be said (In some of the BT filled shuls no one does it)

Should Dennis Prager Run For President?

Dennis says he’s already written 150,000 of his next book (the case for America). “And I write tersely.”

The Chevy Volt has sold 928 cars and the Nissan Leaf 173. “More people have bought my entire Bible commentary series than have bought these cars. They should subsidize my Bible commentary series. Would do a lot more good for humanity than the Nissan Leaf and the Chevy Volt.”

Rent-A-Friend

David Deutsch emails: “I had a great idea in shul today–you should rent yourself out as a “long-time Jewish friend” for celebrities who get in hot water after anti-semitic remarks. “According to long-time friend Luke Ford, Sheen is far from antisemitic–‘If Charlie’s an antisemite, he certainly did a good job of hiding it at at all our shabbos dinners together…””

Beit Din Of Beverly Hills Award Vacated By Los Angeles Superior Court

On July 21, 2005, the Los Angeles Superior Court vacated the award of the Bet Din of Beverly Hills (the psak of R. Gavriel Cohen).

The dispute is within a family over the ownership of the synagogue Yad Avraham (12426 Burbank Blvd., Valley Village, CA 91607).

Around 2004, Rabbi David Addato went to the Bet Din of Beverly Hills and claimed the shul Yad Avraham was his. The Bet Din by a vote of two rabbis to one ruled against him.

The dissenting rabbi, Moshe Benzaquen, sided with David Addato and made a declaration that helped to cause the Los Angeles Superior Court to vacate the Bet Din of Beverly Hills ruling in July of 2005. R. David Addato’s side accused the Bet Din of Beverly Hills of corruption.

R. Gavriel Cohen tells me this accusation has no basis in fact and it is an old and tired accusation brought frequently against Battei Din (Jewish law courts) when they rule against you.

“We had no benefit from the ruling,” says R. Gavriel Cohen. “We were asked a question and we poskened (ruled).”

Rabbi David Addato declined to comment to me on the case.

It is rare that a dissenting Orthodox rabbi on a Beit Din will assist in taking a case to a secular court.

In a dispute such as this, each side gets to choose a dayan (rabbi judge) and then agree on a neutral third judge (dayan). When two of the three rabbis agree on a ruling, that is the psak (ruling) and normally, the dissenting rabbi does not even tell his side that he ruled for them and disagreed with the majority ruling. Normally the dissenting rabbi just says, “This is the psak.”

To then make a declaration for a secular court to vacate a bet din ruling is unusual.

I hear this July 2005 motion alleging corruption on the part of the Bet Din is a great read but I don’t have a copy of it and there is no electronic copy of the filings available online.

It’s not every day you hear about bet din awards vacated for allegations of corruption.

Now the case has a hearing on April 28 in LA Superior Court Glendale. Apparently the court in Glendale wants to make sure that the case goes to arbitration. There’s a motion to the court to appoint a neutral arbitrator.

The Israel Father’s Rights Advocacy Council (Gadi Pickholz) emails:

Your comment re corrupt or incompetent bet din is unfair and inaccurate.

Over 32% of rulings of the Bet Din in Israel are overturned on appeal (almost identical percentages to the secular courts). There is one tribunal in Jerusalem, now disbanded, in which they ruled all decisions in all cases over a certain period of time may be appealed and restarted, and the three dayanim involved banned from any further judicial roles.

This is in a statistical pool of more than 7 million citizens.

What occurs in the States is not a true bet din process, particularly the bizarre insistence on no right to appeal, generally a prerequisite demand. That is simply shtetl vestiges still at play in the 21 century.

Logic dictates that 30+% of the rulings are wrong– higher, as the dayanim in most cases are not professional jurists and have constant community and congregational conflicts of interest — the entire structure of the RCA Bet Din of America is invalid under both Halacha and Israeli civil law, in but one example.

The morass of the bet din system in the USA continues only because the population tolerates it, either out of ignorance or fear. But never confuse that with actual bet din and a proper judicial system.
