Do You Add Joy?

On his happiness hour Friday, Dennis Prager asked if you bring joy to people’s lives.

We all know people who bring gloom.

I’m thinking of one person. I can spot him from far away. He is that deformed by his own bad habits. He’s all slumped over and he’s a wreck.

Have you noticed that people with deformed habits of use tend to be unpleasant? And that people who are free flexible and limber in their bodies tend to be good company?

My deformed friend has no interest in examining his habits. He just stalks around, barely able to perform the necessary tasks of daily life. To get through an ordinary day takes great effort. He brings gloom wherever he goes. Nobody wants to hang out with him.

And get this — almost all of his problems are solvable. He does’t have to walk around stooped. He doesn’t need to compress his neck and spine and torso. He doesn’t need to gasp for breath when he speaks. He doesn’t need to live in an ever-tightening strait-jacket of bad habits.

With 30 Alexander Technique lessons, he’d let go of many of his deformed habits of compression that so debauch his kinesthesia and his dealings with himself and with others.

When you’re feeling bad in your body, you’re less likely to give joy to others.

It’s not happy people who do the most harm in the world. And it’s not people who are happy in their bodies who generally wreak doom and gloom. If you enjoy walking down the street, you’re not likely to greet people with a gloomy countenance.

If you can’t comfortably reach into the back of your refrigerator to pull out a drink and if you can’t reach down to the floor to pick up a sock and if you have a hard time driving a car for longer than 20 minutes, you’re unlikely to bring joy to yourself or to anyone else.

You’re a dead weight on the world. You bring little joy to others. You inflict misery on those who have to be in your presence.

Hey buddy, your complaining bugs me! Get a life. Get some Alexander Technique lessons. Get some therapy. Go to a 12-step meeting. Go to church or synagogue. Read a book and get out of your own way.

12-Step Meetings Were My Idea

I’ve never had a therapist recommend I go to 12-step meetings. They’ve been my idea.

Yes, I saw Fight Club, but that didn’t spur me to go to 12-step meetings.

I never considered it until about two months ago when my psycho-therapist said that my fantasies sounded like “eroticized rage.”

I went home and Googled the topic and read essays by Patrick Carnes with fascination.

I then went to lapl.org and checked out all of his books. They’re on sex addiction.

I’ve had various people over the years suggest to me that I’m a sex addict, but none of them were professionals, and I did not take their comments seriously.

After learning that my fantasies were 100% rage, that I was still dreaming on a daily basis about attaining a control with women I lost in my earliest years, and that I had many of the characteristics of sex addiction (without the behaviors, I haven’t done much acting out in this department in more than 15 years), I thought I would benefit from going to 12-step meetings for sex addiction.

It used to be that something had to make complete sense to me for me to do it. It was that way for me in my earliest years in Judaism. Then, sometime between 1994-2000, I became fascinated by the practice of Orthodox Judaism and making sense became less important. Love is like that.

I got asked on Tuesday why do Jews eat dairy on Shuvuot and I replied, “There are reasons, but I’ve forgotten them.”

I’ve forgotten the reasons because they are no long important to me.

I say this a lot in response to questions put to me about Orthodox Jewish practice — “there are reasons, but I’ve forgotten them.”

Until the last year or so, I would never have considered going to a 12-step meeting unless I was convinced I was an addict. Now I go to meetings because I think they can help me. I have no concern about whether or not I’m an addict.

I’m more flexible these days. It’s largely the result of psycho-therapy and Alexander Technique.

I just want to know what can help my life. That’s true for religion and for recovery groups and for pretty much anything else. It doesn’t have to make complete sense and it doesn’t have to be congruent with my other commitments. If it might be worth trying, I’m open.

I get asked how much courage did it take you to go to your first 12-step meeting? The answer is almost none.

The first thing I do every morning is to take a 60-second cold shower. It’s a rare day that anything else I do is that painful. Going to my first 12-step meeting was about one-tenth as painful as my daily cold shower.

I dream a lot about women. I fantasize that this or that particular woman might be the missing piece in my puzzle. I think that if I could only attain her, then I’ll be happy.

But once I get to know a woman, all these fantasies start dying quickly. Once she becomes flesh and blood to me and this can happen in a matter of seconds, I react to her as a human being.

I remember how clearly this happened with porn stars I interviewed. Once I got to know them, their status as sex objects quickly disappeared. I didn’t want to look at their work because I knew them as real people.

Too much reality can be a bad thing. I was early into a relationship with perhaps the most beautiful woman I’ve ever dated, we ended up seeing each other for about a year, but in our first week together, I noticed that she perspired a little too conspicuously. She dripped with sweat after a little walking on a sunny day and she smelt sweaty too. And she was about five pounds overweight.

I was turned off, even talked about it with a friend, but I never noticed this problem again. I guess we got close and my concerns disappeared. I doubt that she stopped sweating. I think I just started caring.

Tinnitus – Constant Ringing In The Ears

I was sitting around with some friends the other day. They’d all had back surgery and they still suffered from having a bad back.

They talked about their aches and pains. They talked about the trauma of surgery. They talked about problems with their spine.

And they all had zero interest at looking at their own habits of compression that were causing their problems. They had no interest in working on themselves. All they wanted was to get fixed. They wanted some doctor to come in and cut them up and fix their problem. They wanted a chiropractor to adjust them and to crack them and to fix their problem.

I was sitting around with some friends the other day who were complaining about tinnitus — a constant ringing in the ears.

They stated definitively that there was no cure and that anyone who said there was a cure was running a scam. They commiserated over the misery of the problem. They talked about somebody who committed suicide because of the problem.

All these people complaining about tinnitus? They were all dramatically compressing their necks and their spines. They had trouble for sitting long. They had debauched their kinesthesia. And they had zero interest in working on themselves to diminish their problems. They were sure tinnitus could not be fixed. And they had no interest at looking at their own habits of compression that were causing their problems.

For every hundred people who complain about health problems they’ve created through their own habits, only one person is interested in examining their own destructive habits.

PS. Alexander Technique is an excellent way to relieve back ache and tinnitus.

With both groups of people, I said that Alexander Technique helps many people with these problems, but nobody had any interest, so I shut up. Most people would rather suffer from their own bad choices than to examine themselves and to take responsibility for their lives.

The Taliban Shuffle: Strange Days In Afghanistan And Pakistan

I’m enjoying this new book by journalist Kim Barker.

One page 157, she writes:

I sipped my sweet milky tea and decided to cut through the conspiracy drama. I asked my test question, the one that I had started using in Pakistan regularly.

“So…do you think any Jews were killed in the World Trade Center?”

He looked at me. The switch in topic was dramatic.

“Well, I don’t know,” he said. “I don’t think so.”

I stood up. “I’m out of here. You’ve lost all credibility.”

Is Hillary Clinton Aide Huma Abedin A Security Risk?

Jane emails: This about Huma Abedin went off like a red flag for me too. I didn’t know Hillary was running around with God knows who, compromising security like that.

I’m a paralegal who worked with security clearances, there’s a whole area of security clearance law – there are people who are honest, no problem, having their security clearances taken away because they have a dual citizen problem with Canada or the UK –

They have a security clearance review board over in Encino, nobody even knows about it – it’s sitting just off Ventura Blvd, in this creepy building. All this Brass from the Pentagon and the DoD, are running in and out all day long – dragging defense contractors to their doom over some tiny infraction

I’m thinking of challenging Hillary’s security clearance over this – Huma is in violation of the security clearance laws right now, and I know which directives she’s violating – if she was working for Cal Tech, or Jet Propulsion Lab, or Lockheed, etc, she would be out of a job and back to Saudi Arabia having her visa revoked.

And she’s running around the White House with that cow? I am the same age as Hillary – to the date and year – I used to work for the Carter white house in an office in downtown Los Angeles – I was at Haight Ashbury in 1967, I was a hippie – and these FAKE HIPPIES Bill and HIllary- have been sucking the lifeblood out of the hippies – we were never like these people –

And if Obama was a real hip liberal guy, he would have been at Berkeley – not Occidental. Occidental was a cheesy political good old boys college – My husband worked for the very same community organization he worked for in Chicago – and it’s not a community organization – its a front for the mob – my husband quit after they pulled a gun on him

So listen, you can look at the security clearance laws, by pulling up a copy of DoD Directive 5220.6 – and you can read how many security clearance laws Hillary and Huma are in violation of – if you can’t find it, I’ll get you a link. It’s pretty hard to miss.

Yisroel Pensack: Heat From Ex-Porn Star Connection May Cook Weiner

Celebrity news website TMZ.com is running a story which, if true, could put Rep. Anthony Weiner’s (D-NY) political career to bed for awhile.

In an article headlined “Weiner Told Porn Star to Lie, Offered PR Help,” TMZ says “Weiner and former porn star Ginger Lee exchanged scores of sexual emails over a long period of time. When the underwear scandal broke on May 28, Lee began receiving calls from the media, and Weiner was more than happy to help her control the situation … by lying.”

The article says Weiner told Lee in a June 2 email that he “can have someone on my team call” to give her professional PR advice.

“It’s unclear if Weiner’s PR team is from his Congressional staff,” the site added, noting “If so, Weiner could run afoul of House Ethics Rules as well as the law.”

TMZ says Weiner urged Lee “to lie about their relationship” and sent her “a proposed statement she could give to the press.”

Who Is Huma Abedin?

Huma Abedin – international woman of mystery!

I’ve had 11,000 visits to my blog already today and 90% of them are looking for information about Hillary Clinton aide Huma Abedin.

The New York Post reports:

When the wife’s away, Weiner will play.
Kinky Congressman Anthony Weiner conducted several of his steamy online sessions while his better half was out of the country, records show.
As the “body woman” to Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, Huma Abedin is tasked with accompanying the former first lady on diplomatic globetrotting missions.
Weiner, it seems, uses the timing of her foreign affairs to pursue domestic ones online.
For instance, last month, while Abedin and Clinton were in Rome meeting with Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, Weiner was chatting up Texas nursing student Meagan Broussard.

Torah Talk – Parashat Beha’alotekha (Numbers 8:1-12:16)

I discuss the weekly Torah portion with Rabbi Rabbs every Monday at 7pm PST on my live cam and on YouTube.

This week we study Parashat Beha’alotekha (Numbers 8:1-12:16).

Do Blacks Find It Difficult To Get Driver’s Licenses?

Dennis Prager writes: While dining out last week, I periodically looked up at one of the television monitors to see the score of the first game of the NBA finals. As there was no sound on, the monitor was in caption mode: One could read rather than hear the words spoken. At the conclusion of the game, an announcer was interviewing a member of the victorious Miami Heat. I saw from the captions the player saying the words “they isn’t.”

Closed captions display the words spoken. They don’t correct for poor grammar.

All I could think was: How can a grown man in America today say “they isn’t” rather than “they aren’t”?

First, how is it possible for anyone to graduate an American elementary school or, more incredibly, attend college, and still be unable to conjugate the verb “to be”?
Second, has anyone — a parent or another relative, a teacher, a friend, a coach — in that player’s life ever corrected his grammar?

I assume that the answer to the second question is, “No.”

And I assume that the answers to both questions are related: The Left, which dominates our culture and educational institutions, has too often lowered standards for black Americans. Even worse, it has declared that if you are black, “they isn’t” is not only not to be corrected but, according to many in academia, an acceptable form of English, i.e., Ebonics, or Black English.

It doesn’t end.

I saw “they isn’t” the same week the Democrats and others on the Left virtually unanimously condemned all Republican attempts in state legislatures to pass legislation requiring voters to show a photo ID. The Democrats labeled it a means of “disenfranchising” blacks. Many Democrats compared it to Jim Crow laws. “Jim Crow move over, the Wisconsin Republicans have taken your place,” charged Wisconsin Democratic state senator Bob Jauch, referring to his state’s new voter-ID law.

It is hard to imagine a more demeaning statement about black America than labeling demands that all voters show a photo ID anti-black.

This is easily demonstrated. Imagine if some Democratic politician had announced that demanding a photo ID at the voting booth was an attempt to keep Jewish Americans from voting. No one would understand what the person was talking about. But why not? Jews vote almost as lopsidedly Democrat as do blacks. So why weren’t Jews included in liberal objections to voter ID laws?

We all know the answer. Jews are generally considered intelligent and therefore no one would assume that obtaining a photo ID was demanding too much of even poor Jews (yes, there are poor Jews). Therefore, one can only infer that the argument that demanding photo ID for voting will disenfranchise many blacks suggests that many blacks lack the capacity to obtain a photo ID.

If that is not a legitimate inference, then only one other inference is possible: The argument is made solely in order to score political points by portraying black Americans as victims of Republican racism. Of course, that argument simply takes us back to the original question: Why does requiring a photo ID to vote prevent blacks from voting?

It is, however, effective. Calling Republicans racist has worked for half a century, and will not be abandoned until it is universally recognized as the libel that it is.

What we have in both instances — the poor grammar that too many blacks use and the argument that demanding a photo ID is too hard on blacks — is not Republican racism. What we have are two more examples of the destructive consequences of leftist policies on black America.

It is difficult to overstate the negative impact making lesser demands on individuals, especially members of select groups, has on them. The message is as clear as day: We expect less of you. Why? Because we think less of you.

Do most of those on the Left really think less of black Americans?
