Why Be Skeptical Of Global Warming?

Dennis Prager writes: In the belief that there are people on the left who are more interested in understanding the right rather than in simply dismissing its decency, I would like to briefly explain why many thoughtful people are skeptical of the claims made on behalf of global warming. By “global warming” I am referring to the claims of Al Gore that man-made carbon dioxide emissions are causing dramatic increases in the Earth’s temperatures; increases that will devastate much of the Earth.

Many of us don’t believe the Al Gore thesis for three primary reasons:

1. There are thousands of scientists in climate science and other scientific fields — some of them among the most distinguished in the world — who do not agree with the Al Gore thesis. One is Richard Lindzen, the atmospheric physicist and Alfred P. Sloan Professor of Meteorology at MIT, widely regarded as America’s leading climatologist. Lindzen has written that “It is generally accepted that a doubling of CO2 will only produce a change of about two degrees Fahrenheit if all else is held constant. This is unlikely to be much to worry about” and “The basis for the weak [Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change] argument for anthropogenic climate change was shown to be false.”

Another is Freeman Dyson, one the world’s most admired physicists, who in 2009 told The New York Times Magazine, “The climate-studies people who work with models always tend to overestimate their models. … They come to believe models are real and forget they are only models.”

2. They, and many others, point out the obvious fact that throughout the history of the Earth, far more dramatic climate changes have taken place. Greenland was once green, and Iceland was once ice. At one point, the Earth had an ice age and has since warmed considerably — all without one human being living on it, let alone emitting carbon dioxide.

3. We see this doomsday scenario as only the latest in a long line of left-wing hysterias — every one of which turned out to be either fraudulent or wildly exaggerated, and propagated for reasons having little to do with science, but labeled as “science.” When you are wrong 12 out of 12 times, others are not inclined to radically change America’s and the world’s economies by betting that you are right on the 13th.

Here are the three of 12 other left-wing hysterias that have proven false. (Because of space limitations, I have divided this column into two parts, the second of which will appear in these pages on Nov. 11):

1. Nuclear Power

Though strongly opposing fossil-based energy, the left has also opposed clean nuclear energy. The stated reasons? Nuclear energy is not safe because it can leak radiation and because we do not know how to safely dispose of nuclear waste.

This became hysteria more than 30 years ago when the left made the 1979 nuclear meltdown at Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania synonymous with terrible danger from nuclear reactors. Yet, not one person died as a result of Three Mile Island, and exposure to radiation was next to zero.

Even the worst nuclear power disaster in history, the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear reactor disaster, which was entirely a result of Soviet incompetence and lack of concern for its citizens, was far less injurious than the drama around it suggested. As of 2006, 20 years after the disaster, according to the United Nations: “Only 56 people have died as a direct result of the radiation released at Chernobyl … .”

For the left, such numbers are unacceptably small. Thus, the environmentalist group Greenpeace rejected the United Nations numbers and released a report at the same time declaring that many tens of thousands of people will have died from Chernobyl.

Domestic Violence In Beverly Hills

Around 3 p.m., I was walking down Corning near Olympic in 90035 and noticed a police helicopter circling over head and three police cars with their lights flashing. They were tracking a domestic violence call. Some blonde woman had gone running down the street away from some guy with a ponytail.

My friend said that he had a friend on the Beverly Hills police force and every time he went out on a domestic violence call, it was usually to the home of Persian Jews.

I’m friends with many Persian Jews in Pico-Robertson. They tend to be louder and more expressive of their emotions than Americans born here. They’ll yell and scream like you and I would carry on a normal conversation.

They tend to have close families and they tend to fight a lot. By contrast with the natives, they tend to be more dramatic and more expressive and more bonded with their families. Persians are more likely to drive up to an apartment and start honking for their friends or family to come out.

I once had a Persian-Jewish therapist. When she asked about my family, I said we were average close for white people. I meant that the white people I knew tended to not have families as tight as the Persian ones I knew.

How Tiring Are Alexander Lessons?

I felt great leaving my first Alexander Technique lessons. I felt free and light and happy.

Then I noticed myself getting very tired a few hours later.

This is normal. You’re relearning how to do everything. You’re relearning how to be. To be more precise, you’re learning to let go of interfering tension patterns that cause you to shorten and contract your musculature.

I found my first two years of Alexander Technique teacher training to be intermittently exhausting. During much of that time, I did not accomplish anything else significant in my life.

By my third year, however, I found my training to no longer tire me. I’ve reprogrammed how I respond to stimuli and I tend to walk around now with ease. All the routine tasks of life are now more fun. I can do more of life. I can lift and bend and carry and I don’t get so tired any more.

It used to be I’d go to a library or a museum and my back would start hurting after a couple of hours. My shoulders would ache. I’d need to lie down. Now I can go somewhere all day and I’m just fine. I no longer needlessly compress my shoulders and tighten my lower back. Instead, I use myself more efficiently. I go through life with my head floating up, leading my body into length.

Men And Women From Broken Homes

I’ve never forgotten when pick-up artist Neil Strauss told me he wouldn’t date women from broken homes. They had too much psychological baggage.

I was struck by that and thought back over my relationships and I remembered all the turbulence I had trying to relate to women from broken homes and I contrasted that with the more easy-going relationships with women from good families.

So I’m listening to Dennis Prager’s radio show today. “Dennis talks to CNN political analyst and fellow talk show host, Bill Bennett, about his new book, The Book of Man: Readings on the Path to Manhood.”

And Bill Bennett quotes an admission officer at Yale who says that if they admitted solely on merit, women would get about 70% of the new admissions.

Bennett says that in a turbulent society filled with social dysfunction, women do better and men fall apart.

So I thought about women I know from dysfunctional upbringings and it is true. Most of them are successful with their careers. But try to have a relationship with one and that’s when the dysfunction comes out.

So I think that in general, a smart woman from a broken home will more often than not be successful in her career and unsuccessful in her relationships. A man from a broken home will likely be a failure in both categories.

I’m thinking about one woman in particular who I dated. Her parents were swingers. She used to live part-time in apartments with her dad who’d always be bringing home shiksas and banging them. “Hell is listening to your dad ****ing,” she told me.

This woman is high-achieving in the world. She’s smart and funny and articulate. And impossible to have a relationship with. Due to the horror of her childhood, she’s filled with contempt for men. And who wants to have a relationship with somebody who has contempt for you?

I kept asking myself during our time going out, “Why does she have so much contempt for me? No other woman I’ve dated has had this much contempt for me. Hmm, it must not be me. This is her baggage.”

Do Journalists Work Only For The Reader?

Here’s a pious blog post by Hamilton Nolan at Gawker, who should know better:

One basic characteristic of journalism is this: its content is not bought and paid for and directed by an advertiser. It might be vapid. It might be poorly written. It might be damn near worthless. But it’s not an advertisement.
It’s the job of journalists themselves to protect this standard, because advertisers won’t. Advertisers want to advertise. They don’t particularly care about ethical journalism; it’s not their job. So when an advertiser wants to destroy the fundamental (this is a corny and dramatic word, but accurate) sanctity of honest writing in exchange for money, it’s the writer’s job not to let them do it. Because if we do, the advertiser wins exposure, and the writer wins money, but the reader loses. And we work for the reader.

I agree that journalists work for the reader, but they don’t only work for the reader. They also work for themselves. They work for their editors. They work for their employers. They work for their peers. They work for their sources. They work for their subjects. They work for society and for humanity. They work to get laid and to get drunk and to get high and to get famous and to get swag.

There are many reasons to write.

Journalists have so many conflicting obligations (to themselves, to their readers, to their advertisers, to their editors and bosses and peers and to society) that a code of ethics is almost rendered meaningless.

When the advertiser wins exposure in a blog post, the reader is sometimes a loser and sometimes a winner. When would a reader be a winner? If such blog posts were not written because there would be an inadequate financial return to writing them except for the advertisers money.

Somebody has to pay for good writing. Much of it will not be published without somebody paying. I don’t really care if it is paid for by paid inserts into the article or by regular advertising or by charging to read the piece. No one method is morally superior to the others (as long as there’s full disclosure).

Rabbi Rabbs Unhappy With The Happy Minyan

Rabbi Rabbs does not go to shul much. He stays at home typically on the Sabbath and Jewish holidays. But for a while, he would go to the Happy Minyan once a month for their big kiddush because he knew many people there. He feels that they pretended to be his friends but then ignored him when it came time to choose a comic for a big fundraiser.

Rampant Disregard Of Common Courtesies In Traditional Orthodox Judaism

Luke Ford does not see this vulgar behavior in Reform, Conservative or Modern Orthodox Judaism but in traditional Orthodox Judaism, he sees it all the time — a total disregard for common decency. People coming to shul sick and infecting everyone. People sneezing without covering their mouth. People handling food and then putting it back.
