Pat Buchanan’s New Book Argues The Second World War Was Unnecessary

Adam Kirsch writes for the NY Sun:

Churchill, of course, was the one British statesman who recognized that a Europe dominated by Hitler could never be at peace, and who never wavered from the consequences of this insight. Here lies his greatness — here, and not in every act and pronouncement of his long, checkered career, which Mr. Buchanan maliciously combs through. Perhaps those who only know Churchill as a name or a bulldog profile will be surprised by Mr. Buchanan’s disclosures — that Churchill was impetuous, a bad military strategist, an unregenerate imperialist. It is rather nauseating, however, to see Mr. Buchanan, of all people, impugning Churchill for racism. He devotes a section of his book to Churchill’s anti-immigration stand in the 1950s: Churchill believed that "Keep England White" was "a good slogan," while Mr. Buchanan calls it "an astonishing slogan in a day when Dr. Martin Luther King … was starting out in Montgomery." He is even brazen enough to write that, had Churchill prevailed, England would not have become "the multiracial, multicultural nation of today."

When one remembers that if there is one cause Mr. Buchanan himself cherishes it is immigration restriction — when one recalls his words on "national suicide" and the "invasion" of America by nonwhites, and his constant inveighing against multiculturalism — when one remembers that the first pages of this very book lament that "as a share of world population, peoples of European ancestry have been shrinking for three generations," that "we are slowly disappearing from the earth" — Mr. Buchanan’s feline criticism of Churchill stands as a piece of truly shameless hypocrisy.

In any case, everything that was weak in Churchill’s character and objectionable in his politics was well-known during his lifetime. In the mid-1930s, indeed, he was one of the most unpopular politicians in Britain. The reason why he came back from exile to be named prime minister in May 1940, England’s darkest hour, was not because he was a perfect statesman but because he was indomitable: "We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender." Pity the nation that reaches a point where it needs a Churchill to save it; but pity even more a nation that, needing a Churchill, fails to find one.

Product Description
Were World Wars I and II—which can now be seen as a thirty-year paroxysm of slaughter and destruction—inevitable? Were they necessary wars? Were the bloodiest and most devastating conflicts ever suffered by mankind fated by forces beyond men’s control? Or were they products of calamitous failures of judgment? In this monumental and provocative history, Patrick Buchanan makes the case that, if not for the blunders of British statesmen—Winston Churchill first among them—the horrors of two world wars and the Holocaust might have been avoided and the British Empire might never have collapsed into ruins. Half a century of murderous oppression of scores of millions under the iron boot of Communist tyranny might never have happened, and Europe’s central role in world affairs might have been sustained for many generations.

Among the British and Churchillian blunders were:

• The secret decision of a tiny cabal in the inner Cabinet in 1906 to take Britain straight to war against Germany, should she invade France
• The vengeful Treaty of Versailles that muti- lated Germany, leaving her bitter, betrayed, and receptive to the appeal of Adolf Hitler
• Britain’s capitulation, at Churchill’s urging, to American pressure to sever the Anglo- Japanese alliance, insulting and isolating Japan, pushing her onto the path of militarism and conquest
• The 1935 sanctions that drove Italy straight into the Axis with Hitler
• The greatest blunder in British history: the unsolicited war guarantee to Poland of March 1939—that guaranteed the Second World War
• Churchill’s astonishing blindness to Stalin’s true ambitions.

Certain to create controversy and spirited argument, Churchill, Hitler, and “The Unnecessary War” is a grand and bold insight into the historic failures of judgment that ended centuries of European rule and guaranteed a future no one who lived in that vanished world could ever have envisioned.

From a review on amazon.com:

Patrick Buchanan has never been shy about taking positions that defy conventional wisdom. He does so again in this extremely well-written and well-documented book (there are over 1300 endnotes). Buchanan argues that both world wars, which constituted a "Civil War of the West", were not necessary and would not have taken place had unwise diplomatic decisions not been made by the major European powers.

In the opening decade of the twentieth century, Germany had a chance to form an alliance with Britain, but let the opportunity pass, as the Kaiser did not believe that England would ever reconcile with France. However, Britain did reconcile with its longtime adversaries, France and Russia, and in 1906 the British secretly agreed to back France should Germany attack. Had the Kaiser known that war with France meant war with Britain, he would have been more conciliatory, as he never wanted war with Britain. On the other hand, had Britain not been pledged to help the French when World War I did come, and had they stayed out of the war, Germany would have defeated France as they had in 1870, but there would have been no Nazi Germany and no Soviet Union as a result the war.

In the interwar years, Britain alienated longtime allies Japan and Italy, who eventually formed an alliance with Nazi Germany.

The Second World War came about, Buchanan believes, as a result of Britain’s disastrous guarantee to protect Poland (which it was incapable of doing anyway). Hitler did not want war with Britain, as evidenced by the fact that he never attempted to build a strong navy. If Germany had moved east and had the democracies not intervened, Buchanan opines, Germany would have run into the Soviet Union and the result would have been a Nazi-Soviet war that the democracies would have watched from the sidelines. The totalitarian nations would have pounded each other to death, while the democracies would have had a chance to rearm and become stronger relative to a decimated Germany and a decimated Russia (and China might not have gone Communist, meaning that millions might not have been murdered there). As it worked out in real life, however, America and Britain had to push all the way eastward through France and only then into the western half of Germany. By the time that they did, the Soviets had clamped down on Eastern Europe. Buchanan judges Churchill harshly–Britain was bankrupt and lost its empire shortly after WWII.

The book is a stark assertion that history could have turned out much differently. And while Buchanan’s thesis is certainly debatable, and while you may not agree with Buchanan’s isolationism concerning today’s world, this book is worth reading since it forces one to reexamine many previous assumptions held by most people (especially those who were born well after World War II and never have heard how history might have turned out differently) concerning the two world wars, and the book is sure to ignite debate on cable news shows and on the talk radio circuit.

A Rabbi For Pat Buchanan

Nachum Shifren has written a couple of compelling books, The Surfing Rabbi and Kill Your Teacher.

He writes:

As you know from reading my horrific expose of racism and corruption in L.A public schools, I was forcibly removed after 18 years of service as an educator to our children.

The reason was simple: In the face of unbearable hostility and confrontation, I insisted on academic standards and minimum levels of conduct.

The raging fire of "multi-culturalism" threatens to decimate the values we Americans hold dear.

The time to act is now!

I am taking my book, "Kill Your Teacher" (KillYourTeacher.com) on a nation-wide tour, letting Americans know the penalty for silence and indifference toward the young citizens of our country.

Because of my activism, I’ve been put on an administrative "black list" in school districts. I am more than willing to pay this price if it means exposing the malevolent, un-American "leaders" who seek to bring about their one-world-order as they rip from us every last vestige of freedom and morality.

I therefore turn to you in asking that I may use your home/business as a venue where I can address concerned citizens. At that opportunity, I will be signing copies of my new book.

An educational organization has been kind enough to let me use their tax-exempt status to enlist support as I cross this great land.

As always, I will donate a tithe to a charitable cause that you designate.

G-d bless you for all your work on behalf of our country.

The Rebbe & Ronald Reagan

From Chabad.org:

The Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, of righteous memory and President Ronald Reagan enjoyed a deep relationship for many years.

Mr. Reagan displayed a profound respect toward the Rebbe and his teachings. The President was an early and enthusiastic adherent of the Rebbe’s call to make all people aware of the Seven Universal Laws, based on the belief in a Supreme Being. The Rebbe’s call for a moment of silence in the public schools, and his persistent belief that America must export to the world faith-based moral values, were among the themes that found a welcoming ear in President Reagan.

Behind the scenes the President also acted upon the Rebbe’s specific requests to help Israel and Soviet Jews in ways that are still coming to light.

Below we bring you little windows into the relationship; we hope that the additional documents, videotapes and anecdotes come to light soon.

Our thanks to Rabbi Abraham Shemtov, national director of American Friends of Lubavitch and the Rebbe’s ambassador to the White House, for supplying us with these priceless documents so that we may share them with the public.

National Day of Reflection

By the President of the United States of America

A Proclamation

Amid the distractions and concerns of our daily existence, it is appropriate that Americans pause to reflect upon the ancient ethical principles and moral values which are the foundation of our character as a nation.

We seek, and steadfastly pursue, the benefits of education. But education must be more than factual enlightenment-it must enrich the character as well as the mind.

One shining example for people of all faiths of what education ought to be…

Frightened By The Conversion Controversy

Frightened posts to Cross-Currents:

Again, there is an issue in that the court abolished ALL of the giyur done by R. Druckman and R. Avi-Or. The apologeticists and attackers keep framing this debate in terms of extremes, in which a case here or there may not have meant to have a real giyur. A case by case review when there is some kind of safek, may be worthwhile.

However, the fact remains that not all of the converts in Druckman’s bet din were these controversial cases. Many fine frum dati leumi yeshiva types went to Druckman and Avi-Or because the local Rosh Yeshiva sent them, whether its to adopt a child from overseas or to marry a giyoret who had settled in Israel. I know for a fact, since I’m one of these, a yeshiva student who married a giyoret, sent to this bet din, with the best intentions, by a well known rosh yeshiva in Israel.

My kids have been in yeshiva their whole lives. Will Rabbi Adlerstein come and tell my kids, innocent bright children who spent their whole lives in yeshivot, raised frum their whole lives, and explain to them that suddenly they are not Jewish?

While its fun to debate frumkeit and knock this party or that one, does anyone have any idea how real world horrible this is for many of us?

Rav Adlerstein responds:

I won’t, because I don’t believe that this will be the bottom line. If you read my piece again, perhaps you will see where I was heading. I don’t believe that when the halachic dust settles, very many conversions (if any) will be seen as completely invalid after the fact. Those will only be conversions (if they exist at all) in which there was no change in behavior from before the conversion to after. Some cases will be treated as safek, with people who care about what other communities think quietly undergoing a second immersion, without fanfare. (No I don’t know what will happen in the case of a female offspring who has by now wedded a Kohen. My guess is that on a case by case basis, such questions will be dealt with with the same gravity as agunah questions, and top-notch poskim will be meikal in appropriate instances.) I have no idea what will happen in cases in which R Druckman himself was one of the three dayanim in actual attendance, since no one I know of has stepped forth to offer a halachic argument as to why that would not invalidate him. Again, there may never have been such cases. I know that it is easy for me to say, but I would not lose any sleep over this. I will be happy to explain all of this to your children – in person, or by phone.

Israeli Cinema Is Painful

Nine out of ten times I rent an Israeli film, I regret it.

They’re horribly boring.

I just checked out "Sallah." It’s billed as "Israel’s all-time classic" and it is supposedly the highest grossing movie in the history of Israeli cinema.

It’s the quality of an American high school production.

It’s excruciatingly amateurish.

If this is the best Israeli cinema has to offer, then I’m going Iranian. At least they know how to make good movies (and atomic bombs).

I watched Sallah last night and thank the good Lord it put me to sleep.

What is my idea of a great movie? The D-Day landing near the opening of Saving Private Ryan. That’s about as exciting a 15 minutes of cinema as I’ve seen.

I went to the acupuncturist yesterday. He said I had a strong pulse. Normally it is weak.

"I was just watching Saving Private Ryan," I said. "It got my adrenalin pumping."

Man, what I wouldn’t give to kill some Nazis right now.

Rational Reasons For Staying Faithful

Dennis Prager devoted an hour to this topic on his radio show yesterday.

He offered three main reasons:

* Infidelity won’t work. It won’t cure your urge to stray. "The next day or the next week, you’ll yearn for another female body as much as you yearned for one last week."
* You’re hiding a large part of yourself from your spouse
* Peace of mind

"Most men can conquer their emotions with a good argument. I don’t think you could make this generalization — a woman hears a good argument and that ends her feelings about an issue."

"Most women aren’t going to stray so that they can have the excitement of another male body. Women stray for love."

There are two reasons why men stray — for sex and for love. If he’s in an unhappy marriage, he may seek solace and comfort in another woman’s arms.

"Men are born yearning for sexual variety. It’s as true for homosexual men as heterosexual men… That’s the way men are built, including your husband. If he denies that, he’s either not in touch with himself or he’s lying."

Prager says Eliot Spitzer is proof that screwing around doesn’t satisfy. He had to keep ordering in prostitutes.

Prager doesn’t mention Spitzer by name, not wanting to further shame him.

A caller says Spitzer shows that some screwing around does work. It helped Spitzer stay married.

Prager: "It didn’t fill his sexual desire needs. He went to have another female body, a prostitute, and just wanted more."

Isn’t eating like that? It’s a temporary solace. All forms of solace are temporary.

Caller: "An occasional liason kept him in a sexually unfulfilled marriage. I assume he really loves his wife."

Dennis: "What kind of marriage is it when you have this large dark room that your spouse can’t enter."

"The more you hide, the less close you are. There’s no exception. If you hide one thing, you are one thing less close. You hide two things, you are two things less close. To any person in your life. That is why I believe in absolute openness to your best friend and to your spouse who should be your best friend. To think that you are sleeping with other women and have a terrific relationship with your spouse? I don’t get it. It’s not a terrific relationship."

"I don’t like the mockery of women who stand by their husbands after adultery. It’s mean. You’ll have to answer for your meanness to God. The hardest part is not the sex but the double life. I thought I knew you."

Joe emails:

Infidelity has been handled quite extensively in Kundera’s fiction. He argues that infidelity comes not out of a need for sex, a rather mechanical and repetitive function, but the need for excitement. (Nowadays, of course, this is attained through blogging!) I found a nice essay on a blog here: http://teksterogtaler.blogspot.com/2007/03/swimming-pools-in-milan-kunderas-novels.html

For the world-weary hedonist Jan in The Book of Laughter and Forgetting, no matter what he does sexually, he suffers from bouts of meaninglessness, which he alternately experiences as tedious or absurd. His amorous relations are reduced to little more than mechanized routine, resembling "the long, frenzied motions of setting an empty reel spinning, a reel with no film on it." His "silent copulations" have about them an inevitable quality, "as inevitable as a man standing at attention when he hears his national anthem though neither he nor his country derives any benefit from it." To bring some excitement back into his erotic life, Jan seeks to cross a new border between desire and taboo and so he accepts an invitation to a party where the hostess is known for orchestrating group sex. While Jan allows himself to be seduced, he cannot help noticing another couple doing exactly the same things as he and his partner and that the other man has also noticed. In this moment of extreme detachment, Jan finds himself suddenly on the other side of the border. This most intimate of unions is viewed from too great a distance and the two men dissolve into laughter: "They look at each other and at the same time tried not to let their eyes meet. They knew that laughter in this context was as much a sacrilege as laughter in church when the priest raises the host. But as soon as that image went through their heads, they laughed even more."

Narcissistic Brilliance

From New Scientist:

Narcissistic people do not make pleasant colleagues, but they perform better than average at tasks that would daunt others, according to new US research.

"Narcissists will leave everyone else to do the drudgery and come in at the end to take all the credit, or show up when there’s some opportunity to be admired," says Roy Baumeister of Case Western Reserve University, Ohio, who led the research.

"But if you need someone to make a crucial presentation or to do something spectacular, they could be good to have around," he adds.

The study is the first to find that narcissistic people perform better on tasks that give them the opportunity for glory, Baumeister says.

In the mirror

The team studied 248 people, who completed questionnaires assessing the degree to which they agreed with statements such as: I am an extraordinary person, I like to look at myself in the mirror, the world would be a better place if I ruled it.

They then took part in four tests: the children’s board game Operation (a test of manual skill), darts, and measures of arithmetic and creativity.

People who scored higher on the narcissism measure performed on average about 20 per cent better on the tests when they were given the chance to shine, says Baumeister.

"For example, we’d have an audience present or not present. Or we’d tell them that to do well, they’d have to outperform 95 per cent of other people, or only 50 per cent. Being better than average isn’t much incentive to a narcissist, but 95 per cent was something they could really shoot for," he says.

Noxious self esteem

When given a high or public target to aim for, the more narcissistic people also performed better than those with lower narcissism scores.

But the trait is poorly understood, Baumeister says: "We are at a fairly early stage of finding out about these people and what makes them tick."

Most people have a degree of narcissism, but at its extreme it is characterised by a "noxious sense of self esteem," he says. "But why people grow up to be narcissists is a really important question and we do not have enough data on that."

Bad Boys Running Wild

Neil Strauss says it is not true that women prefer bad boys. They prefer strong men.

From New Scientist:

NICE guys knew it, now two studies have confirmed it: bad boys get the most girls. The finding may help explain why a nasty suite of antisocial personality traits known as the "dark triad" persists in the human population, despite their potentially grave cultural costs.

The traits are the self-obsession of narcissism; the impulsive, thrill-seeking and callous behaviour of psychopaths; and the deceitful and exploitative nature of Machiavellianism. At their extreme, these traits would be highly detrimental for life in traditional human societies. People with these personalities risk being shunned by others and shut out of relationships, leaving them without a mate, hungry and vulnerable to predators.

But being just slightly evil could have an upside: a prolific sex life, says Peter Jonason at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces. "We have some evidence that the three traits are really the same thing and may represent a successful evolutionary strategy."

Jonason and his colleagues subjected 200 college students to personality tests designed to rank them for each of the dark triad traits. They also asked about their attitudes to sexual relationships and about their sex lives, including how many partners they’d had and whether they were seeking brief affairs.

High ‘dark triad’ scorers are more likely to try to poach other people’s partners for a brief affair”

The study found that those who scored higher on the dark triad personality traits tended to have more partners and more desire for short-term relationships, Jonason reported at the Human Behavior and Evolution Society meeting in Kyoto, Japan, earlier this month. But the correlation only held in males.

James Bond epitomises this set of traits, Jonason says. "He’s clearly disagreeable, very extroverted and likes trying new things – killing people, new women." Just as Bond seduces woman after woman, people with dark triad traits may be more successful with a quantity-style or shotgun approach to reproduction, even if they don’t stick around for parenting. "The strategy seems to have worked. We still have these traits," Jonason says.

This observation seems to hold across cultures. David Schmitt of Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois, presented preliminary results at the same meeting from a survey of more than 35,000 people in 57 countries. He found a similar link between the dark triad and reproductive success in men. "It is universal across cultures for high dark triad scorers to be more active in short-term mating," Schmitt says. "They are more likely to try and poach other people’s partners for a brief affair."

Barbara Oakley of Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan, says that the studies "verify something a lot of people have conjectured about".

Christopher von Rueden of the University of California at Santa Barbara says that the studies are important because they confirm that personality variation has direct fitness consequences.

"They still have to explain why it hasn’t spread to everyone," says Matthew Keller of the University of Colorado in Boulder. "There must be some cost of the traits." One possibility, both Keller and Jonason suggest, is that the strategy is most successful when dark triad personalities are rare. Otherwise, others would become more wary and guarded.

Valley Village Orthodox Jew & Former Boeing Scientist Abraham Lesnik Charged With Not Securing Military Secrets

From ERSNews.com:

e

FORMER BOEING SCIENTIST

In Los Angeles federal court yesterday, Abraham Lesnik, a former Boeing defense scientist was charged with improperly retaining sensitive security information by Federal prosecutors.

His attorney Marc Harris accompanied Lesnik who was present for his arraignment.  He was given a trial date of August 12th and processed by US Marshals at the courthouse.

ABCNews.com’s “The Blotter” first reported the federal investigation of Lesnik.
”The Enterprise Report” has also covered the case extensively.

e

Mr. Lesnik sat quietly in a Los Angeles federal courtroom yesterday as a parade of other cases went before a federal judge.  When asked by this reporter if he was "Abraham", he politely responded, "what is your interest" with an undetermined accent.  When he was told, "I am a reporter" he refused to continue the conversation and turned away.

Lesnik has been the subject of around the clock FBI surveillance at his suburban Los Angeles home for more than a year and a half.

e

When Lesnik later left the federal courthouse, after a few hours, he again refused to comment. He tried his best to avoid this reporter and a cameraman who attempted to ask him questions about his case.
