My Dialogue With Rabbi Mordecai Gafni

I spent today in Salt Lake City talking to Dr. Gafni. Audio

I hope to have the full transcript posted in the next few days.

Afterwards, I walked around the outside of the Mormon Temple.

It was my first visit to Salt Lake. I loved it there. The place was clean and the people were nice. It had a good vibe.

I want to go back back.

Dr. Gafni and I did our dialogue and shot these pictures at the headquarters of Catalyst magazine, which prints 25,000 copies each month.

Editor and Publisher Greta deJong (nice Catholic girl) hosted us and snapped these photos.

She kept the mint tea and mango green tea coming all day as Mordecai and I talked ourselves dry.

The Awareness Center this week sent out a release saying that Gafni has changed his name to "Marc Israel" and married a fourth time. Dr. Gafni says this is not true.

Dennis Prager To Wives: ‘If You Don’t Give Him Sex, He Doesn’t Know You Love Him’

Prager says on his radio show that sex is the primary way men feel loved by their wives.

You may think that is simplistic but it is either true or not true.

Prager notes some study that says women are in the mood for sex about eight hours a month.

Prager reads a letter from a woman who thought her husband was a pervert because he was constantly desiring her. Then she listened to Dennis and realized her husband was not a pervert but a healthy male.

Celebrating The Fourth Of July Chinese Style

A friend calls. "What are you doing for the fourth?"

Luke: "No plans."

Friend: "You and Ming Ho aren’t going to sell state secrets to the Chinese? It’d be the time to do it. Empty parking lot in Monterey Park.

"A Chinese communist spy comes up to you: ‘What’s your name?’

"You say, ‘Jumping Kangaroo.’

"Aww, very good.

"You’re going to shove in the state secrets like an egg roll."

"Aww, we’ll take this straight to the chairman. Very pleased."

"I can’t believe you’re dating a spy. You know those braces have radio transmitters that are going right to Beijing."

The Frightening Similarities Between Marc Gafni And Me

Joe emails: His site is pathetic. The only worse writing I’ve seen was Moish Geller’s, but he’s at least sort of lovable. Though I’d take issue with your comment that "jews use many names". I think the denominator here is not Jews but criminals. I worked at the prison ward and everyone had multiple aliases, Levi aka Luke. Hey, with your new beard you guys look alike. Hey, I’m getting it- you ARE him!

Check out Luke’s new "Velma Magnet"!

Mordecai Gafni Returns

Here’s the funniest response I’ve read: "What a let down. Those of us who have known him for years, and have been following his exploits (his xxxploits) through his multiple reincarnations from right wing orthodoxy to New Age guru, can only be disappointed that after his disappearance in Salt Lake all he can do is whine. We were hoping he’d reemerge in Toldos Aharon, or as a Zen Roshi, or a Mormon elder, but I guess he’s out of ideas… Luckily for us, of course. "

Shmarya Rosenberg reports:

He’s playing the victim, claims to have been set up and railroaded, and he has a whole new set of defenders – many of them non-Jews. The defense rests primarily on what his defenders call consensual sexual affairs with women he taught and counseled during the last years of his career and on a bizarre conspiracy theory that only holds together, to the little extent that it does, if you believe Gafni’s personal account of events and take his paid consultants’ word as truth.

What these defenders do not deal with is the long, clear record of abuse, manipulation, lies and deceit carried out by Gafni over his entire career.

Hanging out with shamans and practitioners of the "magik arts," Gafni has again found a group of people naive enough to believe his lies.

Catalyst Magazine, a Salt Lake City-based new age publication, has a laughable "exoneration" of Gafni in its July issue that focuses on the personalities of The Awareness Center’s Vicki Polin and blogger Luke Ford.

No accuser of Gafni is spoken to. No victim is contacted. Indeed, no one critical of Gafni is quoted and exposé’s on Gafni abuse – like Ma’ariv’s and the New York Jewish Week – are ignored. In the business, this is what is known as a love letter, a piece that your very own PR person could have written.

Perhaps that is because for the past year, Gafni has been a columnist for Catalyst Magazine, writing under a pseudonym but with his true identity known to the editors. That Catalyst would allow someone like Gafni to write anonymously speaks to the magazine’s lack of credibility and ethics.

Two examples:

1. Catalyst claims that Gafni passed lie detector tests administered by Gordon Barland. But Catalyst does not quote Barland or tell us what questions were asked.

2. Catalyst also claims "even by Israel’s strict standard, in no way did [Gafni] break the law." This is false. Gafni fled Israel as soon as the story about his clergy abuse broke. Israel rarely indicts non-violent criminals who have already fled the country. If Gafni tried to return to Israel, the legal process will restart.

Here is Gafni’s explanation of his latest actions as quoted by Catalyst, notable for its disingenuousness:

“Of course, I regret with all my heart that anyone experienced hurt through their relationship with me. And, remember what Bono sings? ‘We hurt each other and we do it again.’ The key is what we do with our hurt,” Gafni says. “But what I most deeply regret is that I allowed myself to jeopardize the work we were doing by engaging in these relationships. I believed that what we were doing was sharing love, and that therefore there was nothing ethically, and certainly not legally, wrong. I still believe that. But I also recognize that a spiritual teacher has to hold strong boundaries around his personal life. Even mutual relationships with powerful and autonomous women are a problem for a public teacher. Moreover, in retrospect, our relationship did not serve the highest growth of these women; it endangered our movement and let down my supporters, friends and partners. In that sense—although I was unconscious of it at the time—they were unethical relationships and I regret that deeply.”

That’s right. An Orthodox-ordained rabbi sleeping with multiple women (sometimes at the same time, each without the other’s knowledge) he counsels and teaches views his actions as "sharing love" and sees "nothing ethically, and certainly not legally, wrong." All he sees is the damage the exposure of these "love-sharing" episodes had on his income and power. Like most abusers, it is all about me. It is never, ever about the people he hurt and the lives he ruined.

I met Mordechai Gafni on Purim in Jerusalem in 1994 or 1995. As I wrote previously, my reaction – which was shared by the Chabad rabbi whose home we were in, and by all the others present – was that Gafni was a con man and a fraud.

None of us knew then about Gafni’s history of abuse. But his fundamental dishonesty was strikingly clear.

Israeli Ethiopians Conned By Rabbis

Rabbi Lev Brackman writes for YNETNEWS:

The phenomenon, as it turned out, is not unique: Yedioth Ahronoth received testimonies from other Ethiopian couples who encountered a similar experience; shortly before the wedding, and after having made all the arrangements, Rabbi Yosef Hadana, chief rabbi of the Ethiopian community in Israel, informed them there was a problem with the Jewish status of one of them, meaning the wedding could not be officiated on the appointed date.

After causing the couples such severe distress, Rabbi Hadana then referred to acquire a speedy conversion, simultaneously telling them to seek Rabbi Shalom Tsadok, of the local council Bnei Ayish. Tsadok on his part offered the couple a quick fix: A fake wedding attended by an authentic rabbi, so that at least the guests believe they are witnessing a real Jewish wedding.

He also referrered the couples to a rabbi who officiates such ceremonies – Rabbi Shilo Tsadok, a rabbi from Kiryat Ata, also known as “Rabbi Shaul” or “Rabbi Shauli” – who just happens to be his son.

“Three and a half months before the wedding, I came to Rabbi Hadana who told me everything was in place and that I should return just before the wedding,” said D., one of the grooms “wedded” by Rabbi Tsadok.

Having no choice, A. returned to Rabbi Hadana who then referred him to Rabbi Tsadok, who in turn sent him to Rabbi Shilo. “A wedding with a rabbi has a price,” Rabbi Tsadok told him. The final price paid for the wedding was NIS 3,000 (about $900.)

Rabbi Hadana told the “problematic” couples that after the sham-wedding and proper conversion are over, he will hold another ceremony in his office for an additional fee.

A Yedioth Ahronoth reporter approached Rabbi Shalom Tsadok with a “similar case,” in a bid to verify the couples’ complaints.

When asked by the reporter whether he could ask Rabbi Hadana about Rabbi Shilo, or tell him that the wedding was not a real one, Rabbi Tsadok said: “You can, but no one should know it was make-believe… Rabbi Hadana probably knows everything…it’s for your own good.”

The Rabbinate, added Rabbi Tsadok, will not recognize the marriage. The reporter than asked the rabbi whether NIS 3,000 ($900) would be enough. “He will only want cash,” said Rabbi Tsadok. The wedding, explained the rabbi, is invalid: "It doesn’t count, just a make-believe… Rabbi Shalom Tsadok said that "we are doing the Ethiopian community a favor and I intend to stop it. The Chief Rabbinate said that following the information presented by Yedioth Ahronoth it will summon Rabbi Shilo Tsadok to a hearing before the wedding officiators’ committee, and is considering revoking their officiators’ permits.

Is This Guy Jewish?

I heard Dennis Prager say once that when you hear a murderer is named "Cohen," you’re shocked. When you hear a guy convicted of a white collar crime is named "Cohen," you’re not as surprised.

NEW YORK (AP) — A fugitive hedge-fund swindler who had been on the lam for nearly a month since a faked suicide on a Hudson River bridge surrendered Wednesday in Massachusetts, the U.S. attorney’s office said.

Samuel Israel turned himself into Southwick, Mass., police between 9:15 and 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, said Suzanne Anderson, police Chief Mark Krynicki’s assistant. She said he was being processed at Southwick Police headquarters and referred all further questions to federal authorities.

Southwick is 95 miles from the federal prison in Ayer, Mass., where Israel was to report last month to serve his sentence.

Israel disappeared June 9 on the day he was supposed to report to prison. His car was found on a bridge over the Hudson River with the words "Suicide is Painless" — the title of the theme song for the "MASH" television show — scrawled in dust on the hood.

Because no body was found beneath the 150-foot-high bridge where his car was abandoned, authorities believed from the start that he faked his disappearance.

The 48-year-old Israel, a co-founder and chief executive of the now-collapsed Bayou hedge funds, was sentenced in April to 20 years in federal prison for conspiracy and fraud. He was also ordered to pay $300 million to his victims.

Prosecutors said he and two other men persuaded investors to put $450 million into the Stamford, Conn.-based company by announcing nonexistent profits and providing fake audits.

TMZ Videographer Josh Levine Vs. Actor Woody Harrelson

From TMZ:

Woody Harrelson choked TMZ cameraman Josh Levine late Thursday night as he left a Hollywood nightclub, and the LAPD is conducting a criminal investigation.

The incident occurred at approximately 11:30 p.m. outside Element, a club frequented by celebrities. As Harrelson left with three women and two men, Levine and other photogs began shooting. Harrelson became irritated and asked Levine to stop shooting. Harrelson then walked over to Levine, put his hand on the camera and asked Levine to stop. Levine said "All I’m doing is my job." Harrelson, who appears in "A Prairie Home Companion," then said, "I’ve asked you to stop, are you going to stop?" and Levine replied, "Not when you ask me like that." The video then shows Harrelson break the camera and the picture goes dead.

TMZ obtained a second video, shot by another photog, showing the altercation. The photographer began shooting just as Harrelson grabbed Levine’s neck. There is no audio in this portion of the tape.

After the incident, Levine was visibly agitated and argued with a man who appeared to be Harrelson’s security guard. Then Levine flagged down an LAPD patrol car and told the two officers inside, "Hey bro, I just got assaulted by Woody Harrelson. He choked me out right now." A man standing near Levine added, "Yeah, I’m a witness." The police did not acknowledge Levine and simply drove away.
