Ten Reasons I Am A Jew

Dennis Prager writes in Moment (link from Rabbi Gil Student):

  1. The Jews are the Chosen People.
  2. Just as people need an instruction manual for a camera, they need an instruction manual on how to lead a good, holy and meaningful life. Judaism provides the best one ever written: the Torah.
  3. The Torah is a divine document.
  4. Judaism is a religion of moderation.
  5. Judaism provides immense joy. No religion provides such continuous joy-filled moments as Judaism. I am referring to the weekly celebration of Shabbat and the frequent holidays. Every week I look forward to Shabbat in a way unknowable to non-Jews or Jews who do not celebrate the Sabbath.
  6. Judaism provides meaning.
  7. Judaism provides community. Whether on Shabbat or on holidays, whether in joy—the birth of a child, a wedding—or in crisis or mourning, our religion does not allow us to be alone.
  8. Judaism is uniquely preoccupied with good and evil.
  9. Judaism is concerned with the present world.
  10. Judaism allows, even encourages, a Jew to argue with God.

Cardinal Lustiger Would Say Kaddish For His Mother

From Haaretz.com:

One day Rabbi Rene-Samuel Sirat was invited to attend a lecture on the Holocaust, held in the amphitheater of the Sorbonne University in Paris. The speaker, a member of the Academie Francaise, moved the audience when he spoke of a Jewish girl who missed out on a golden opportunity to escape a concentration camp to remain near her parents. Eventually, she was sent to her death along with them.

"Next to me sat Cardinal Lustiger," the former chief rabbi of France recalled. "I glanced at his face and saw tears running down his cheeks. At that moment I knew he was remembering his mother, who suffered a similar fate at the Auschwitz death camp."

Lustiger passed away Monday aged 80. Born Aaron Lustiger, he converted to Catholicism when his Jewish German parents sent him to live with a French Catholic family during the Holocaust. He was ultimately appointed to the Church’s most senior positions, and served as archbishop of Paris from 1981 until 2005.

On more than one occasion, Sirat met the cardinal entering Paris’ main synagogue. "He would come to say kaddish for his mother," he said.

Joe writes: "Contrast and compare to what would occur at YICC or Beth Jacob."

I Want To Speak To College Kids At $5K A Pop

Joe emails:

Luke, I’ve been enjoying your blogs for years.

I went to Ner Israel [high school in Baltimore]. There were a few guys who got kicked out of school for homo activities. I remember one guy in particular who was in the beit medrash. Very good looking guy, like Robert Redford. Apparently he was molesting a few of the high school kids he was tutoring.

Looking back on my experience in the orthodox community, it seems like they were not that different than their cousins in the taliban, or the islamic schools (which apparently have massive faggotry going on – it would make the British navy blush).

You should get on the college speaking circuit. You’ll make an easy $5k per gig for starters. Just talk about porn, religion, etc. Most importantly you will be getting some prime vagina. Send me 15% as a consulting fee after your first gig.

If you put together a compelling documentary along the lines of your Rob Spallone videos, you will have a "calling card". Pretentious college kids are always interested in this type of stuff.

You show your "film" then do a chat. $5k. ka-ching! 4 shows a month, and you make your way across the country sampling various young beaver. Of course your expenses are minimal since you are traveling in serial killer bangbus, and sleeping and eating in chabad houses, and dorm rooms of nubile fangirls. Easy $200K + 20-30 fresh, young, vaginas.

I will be your Don King and pimp you out. I will manage all the money "we" take in, very prudently in a sure-fire casino blackjack, and horse racing strategy.

You won’t have to worry about anything because I will keep you well supplied with pharmaceuticals, Mrs. Adler Gefilte Fish, happy pills, and impressionable young jewesses who want to rebell against their bouregois family by banging a semi-jew, aging, aussie porn fiend.

Let me know when you’re ready to get started!

Luke, Have you wondered why judaism does not want converts? Its because of guys like you. Anyway, you know the ship is going down when luke ford joins the party. Seriously, you are very, very bad for the jews. Please go back to paganism, or worshiping sand paintings, or whatever goes on in the aussie bush. We are supposedly a holy, pure people….

Whenever I’m in a whorehouse, underground stripclub, or korean "spa" I cringe when frumaks walk in. of course, they are the worst customers since they don’t tip well, and always hondel. If any of your readers are looking for a maariv minyan following their handjob, they can go to the "lapdance party" on west 36st, or the korean joint on 28st and 8th ave, in Manhattan. Wednesday nights.

The Book That Launched Me Into Journalism

I read it thoroughly during the first few months of 1980 (the end of eighth grade) — Melvin Mencher‘s "News Reporting and Writing."

I was relieved that this was a profession that did not require me to get good grades.

(At the time I was distressed that I could not become president of the United States due to being born in Australia and that I could not become a great marathoner because of my bumb knees.)

Tuesday evening I read about Mencher in a dull corporate history of Columbia University’s School of Journalism.

The memories of Melvin’s book flooded back (I couldn’t forget the unfortunate name Melvin).

I’m sure Mel’s very proud of me.

Mayor’s Troubles

Bill Farr comments:

— The mayor’s press staff should have anticipated the press scrum at the port and never allowed the incident to happen.

— Unger must of have trained with the NBA. She was looking for a technical.

— Laurel Erickson of KNBC is clearly over compensating for the fact that Salinas worked for a sister station — and it’s hard for Erickson to over compensate.

— The mayor should be happy that Linda Breakstone is no longer on the air.

— The mayor needs to develop a strategy and stick to it. He’s clearly flailing. His marriage was dissolving and he had an affair. Now he’s getting a divorce. It’s not at all unusual.

— Telemundo did a disservice to everyone involved by doing a shitty investigation. If Salinas actually had a habit of bedding sources, she should have been fired. If her bosses knew about it and even exploited those relationships, they should have been fired. Then they should have made the investigation public.

— Salinas needs to find a job in another market, or resign. Her position in the LA press corps — such as it is — is untenable.

Death Threats

After I reported that a leading pornographer (Lenny Friedlander) died at his own hand Sunday, I got some threatening phone calls, including this one at noon:

Man: "What are you doing?"

Luke: "What do you mean?"

Man: "Are you looking to get yourself hurt?"

Luke: "No."

Man: "You’re gonna. There’s nothing that anyone can do to help you. You’re gonna have a big problem. A lot bigger than you’ve ever had.

"For what you put up there this morning, you will not go to any conventions without getting hurt. And I mean really hurt. You should’ve thought about that before you put that up there. You know you’re out of the porn business. I’m dead serious. You’re going to go to a convention or something and something’s gonna happen."

"This is somebody’s life. He has family. There’s a lot of people he knew. You put up that story, true or not, you should’ve thought about it. You’re not talking about these little douchebags who shoot movies…. This is one of the biggest guys in the industry. He has a lot of friends. You are not safe."

"This is a tragedy and that is something that should not be put up there."

Mikey emails:

Mr. Friedlander’s Family deserved a lot more tact than that headline ["Lenny Friedlander Shot Himself"]. I am not sure if you went school for Journalism, but I assume you did not. I can send you my book from my Ethics in Journalism class, but then again your not a real Journalist.

This was a great man that commanded respect from everyone that ever worked for with or even with him. Speaking as someone that worked for him for a number of years I hope the unidentified “Man” makes good on his promise. I owe Mr. Friedlander the life I currently have.

Three Breaking Stories On ERSNews.com

Eric Longabardi reports:

ERSNews.com has exclusively obtained a photo of Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa issuing then Telemundo General Manager Manual Abud KVEA-TV52 in Los Angeles an official City proclamation honoring the Telemundo station on November 9th, 2005.

Abud was removed from his position as General Manager just last week. At the same time Mirthala Salinas was suspended for two months without pay, along with other Telemundo employees who were “disciplined” for violating the NBC/Universal (owners of the station) Standards and Practices in relation to Salinas’ affair and coverage of Mayor Villariagosa from late 2005 through June of 2006.

Mayor Villaraigosa was on hand in 2005 for the Telemundo proclamation ceremony. According to a published report at the time Mayor Villaraigosa “thanked KVEA for its dedication and accurate reporting of local, national and world news, which is worthy of public appreciation and recognition”.

And Now Comes The Crash…

For a decade, I’ve fantasized about appearing on the cover of the Jewish Journal.

I’ve spent more time thinking about what I’ll say in that ultimate interview than I’ve spent trying to pick up chicks.

(I have a far richer inner life than social life.)

I always thought this article would come at the hands of Amy Klein. I pictured us over lunch and how I would whip out my tape recorder when she started the on-the-record part of our conversation and all the brilliant justifications I’d give her for my abominable behavior. (Some people use their intelligence to make the world a better place. I use mine to rationalize my sins.)

But then my time came at the hands of 25-year-old Christian Brad A. Greenberg. Brad’s a good reporter but he’s no Amy Klein. And when he started asking me questions, well, I just answered them. The whole thing didn’t run anything like my fantasies. We didn’t even hook up afterwards because that would’ve been against the Torah.

In case you’re wondering, I think I am a very important person who deserves to be on the cover of the Jewish Journal.

Other people have lives. I have my blogging and I want recognition for it.

In Orthodoxy, you’re supposed to be self-abnegating and to flee from honor. I suspect my Orthodox friends (and anybody who knows me) see me as an attention-seeking clown.

They’re not wrong. I am a clown.

I might as well embrace who I am and make the most of it.

For the nights leading up to and coming down from my appearance on the Journal cover, I couldn’t sleep.

On Shabbos, people kept asking me how I was doing and I’d reply I was fine. They’d ask me what was new and I’d say nothing. And then they’d mention the cover story.

"What’s it like to be a celebrity?" some would ask and I’d mutter something about my small world…

And now it’s Monday night I haven’t even gotten a date from the whole thing. So what’s the point? It used to be that when I had this sort of media triumph, good things would result from it with the opposite sex. But no such luck. Danielle Berrin didn’t even answer my email.

(At Starbucks Sunday, a friend gave me $20 and said, "Maybe use it to take Danielle to drinks.")

(No wonder my ex-mates at YICC regard me as an internet terrorist.)

I’ve gone from my manic high to a crashing low. Nothing excites me anymore. Aside from writing vicious things about people who’ve died, I spend my time at Starbucks sipping sugary drinks and reading books on writing creative non-fiction. The homeless and mentally ill approach me. I’ve always been huge with the retarded and the marginal. They recognize a kindred soul.

Now the drinks are gone and I have a bad taste in my mouth.

Ten years ago, I looked good in my pictures. Maybe the ladies didn’t swoon, but some of the skanks went down.

I suppose I should go back on my lithium but I’m already 20 pounds above my normal weight. If I take it every day as prescribed I go up 50 pounds and start to drool.

P.S. I’ve gone back on the lithium.

Brad Greenberg blogs that other Jewish journalists are appalled I was put on the cover.

Chaim Amalek writes: "There comes a time in every man’s life when his youthful twinkdom vanishes, and he is too old to appeal to any fertile woman’s maternal instincts. You’ve had a nice long run of it, but looking forward, you are going to need money to get anywhere with sane, sexually desirable women, few of whom want to share their lives with you on the floor of a converted garage."

Yori Yanover posts:

A guy sits in beis medrash learning and a bunch of kids hover around him, bothering him, so he tells them there’s a man giving away free candy two blocks away and they run off, finally leaving him alone. A minute later he gets up and starts running after them, because you never know, they might really be giving away free candy over there.

How could you possibly buy the line that there’s any connection between your face appearing anywhere and getting laid, making money, getting reservations to really hot restaurants? It’s media jocks like you pumping out this nareshkeit, which is fine as blog fodder when real things aren’t happening at the moment, but to trust that the event has any meaning outside a brief, personal drop of egotistical pleasure?

In early 1994 I made the cover page of the Jerusalem Post Magazine and my wife framed a few copies. I sent one frame to my dad, who had a lot of naches from it and put it on top of the TV. I look at it occasionally (like once every 2 years). It’s a nice image. There’s absolutely no other value attached.

But you already know all that.

I read the interview and was very upset by it. It was shallow and uneducated and missed all the serious points about you and the phenomenon associated with your name. In that it was reminiscent of one of your own profile jobs: Boy turns on tape, boy transcribes tape, boy publishes tape. Except in this case boy made more than one phone call. So little insight, so little sense of Net history.

Joe emails:

Been there, done that. I had a full page picture in a major news magazine, with a big article, but after three days its old news; the trick is to start planning for the next one. Or get a steady performing gig where you get used to a big high on performance night, two days of post performance fetal position sulking, then when the next performance starts coming around, you come alive again. Those huge ups and downs are part of the performing package, which is why tmz.com has so many stories. I know the feeling well, which is why I have to keep up all my public speaking gigs. And its an illusion to think that marriage, kids, sex, drugs or other kinds of happiness will supplant it. Fame is the most addictive drug there is, and it doesn’t matter if its being a rock star, a rabbi, or an exhibitionist (or all three at once).

Anyway, even if you do five more covers, when one day you are the most desired person in the world, and then you are told that you are not in fashion anymore, you either reinvent yourself or go down hard. So choose your path – Bruce Springsteen or Britney Spears? Figure out your next gig now.
