I read it thoroughly during the first few months of 1980 (the end of eighth grade) — Melvin Mencher‘s "News Reporting and Writing."
I was relieved that this was a profession that did not require me to get good grades.
(At the time I was distressed that I could not become president of the United States due to being born in Australia and that I could not become a great marathoner because of my bumb knees.)
Tuesday evening I read about Mencher in a dull corporate history of Columbia University’s School of Journalism.
The memories of Melvin’s book flooded back (I couldn’t forget the unfortunate name Melvin).
I’m sure Mel’s very proud of me.
