The College Sophome Who Put Sarah Palin On The Political Map

Timothy Noah writes for Slate:

Adam Brickley.

According to both the Aug. 29 Anchorage Daily News and the June 13 Colorado Springs Gazette, Sarah Palin became John McCain’s vice presidential candidate largely through the machinations of someone even younger and less experienced than herself. From the Anchorage Daily News:

The hype can probably be traced to the Web site of a 21-year-old college senior majoring in political science at the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs. Adam Brickley, a political buff who will graduate in May, started a "Draft Sarah Palin for Vice President" blog last year and has relentlessly promoted the idea ever since.

Brickley has never been to Alaska or met Palin. But while researching potential vice presidents, he stumbled on Palin and thought she would be a good No. 2 to just about all of the major Republican candidates in the race at the time. …The "Draft Palin" movement picked up momentum in more mainstream media, including a column last summer by Fred Barnes of the Weekly Standard. Others followed, including talk over the past couple weeks from conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh. [Actually, Limbaugh’s been chatting up Palin since February 2008; Brickley created his blog in February 2007, during his sophomore year, a mere two months after Palin assumed the governorship. Click here to see him talk up Palin this past May on YouTube.]

Brickley (aka "Elephantman") supported Rudy Giuliani in the primaries, according to his blog. According to his "Blogger" profile, Brickley’s interests include politics, Zionism, and "fighting socialism." ZoomInfo adds that he’s a leader in University of Colorado-Colorado Springs College Republicans and the founder of a political blog called ConservaGlobe; that he made dean’s list; and that he receives a $7,500 Ronald Reagan College Leaders scholarship annually from the conservative Phillips Foundation. At the moment, he appears to be interning for a young conservative commentator on TownHall.com named Matt Lewis. "WE DID IT!!!!!!" crows Brickley’s latest entry on the Draft Sarah Palin blog. "I’ll have a lot more later, but needless to say I am positively elated."

On Sept. 3, 2007, I got this email after running a laudatory article on Sarah Palin:

Luke, loved the piece you wrote on Sarah Palin.  There are various sites where you can learn more about Sarah and her candidacy for V-P.  My own site sometimes turns into "all Sarah all the time."  You can find it at: http://camp2008victorya.blogspot.com.

The person who founded the movement, Adam [Brickley], blogs at: http://palinforvp.blogspot.com.

I hope you’ll join our effort to get Sarah a spot on the GOP ticket.  There are now dozens of bloggers listed on my blogroll, and I’d love to have your blog there.

Sarah Palin’s Sportcast Video

From deadspin:

Sorry to barge in on your holiday weekend — for God’s sake, put on some pants — but I just got back from he movies and found this great video in a basket on my doorstep. It’s the one we’ve all been waiting for, a gift from the cold, desolate North: A sportscast featuring presumptive Republican Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin! Boom goes the dynamite, following the jump.

The year was 1988. The Redskins beat the Broncos 42-10 in the Super Bowl. The film Gorillas in the Mist teaches us how to love once again. George H.W. Bush chooses Dan Quayle as his Vice Presidential running mate. And at KTUU-TV in Anchorage, Alaska, a plucky 24-year-old sports broadcaster named Sarah Heath is giving Knicks highlights and making snide remarks about Tommy Lasorda. Do not be frightened by her large hair: Everyone was wearing it like that then. Even the men.

Who would have thought that the young lass would grow up to run the great state of Alaska, and then be asked to the Big Dance by John McCain? Certainly not the news anchor guy shown in this clip, who appears to be a weird amalgam of Ron Burgundy and Carl Monday. Just think: If McCain wins, we will have the only Vice President who has once given Iditarod highlights.

Sarah Palin Is The Real Deal

Mark Steyn writes:

What other country in the developed world produces beauty queens who hunt caribou and serve up a terrific moose stew? As an immigrant, I’m not saying I came to the United States purely to meet chicks like that, but it was certainly high on my list of priorities. And for the gun-totin’ Miss Wasilla then to go on to become Governor while having five kids makes it an even more uniquely American story. Next to her resume, a guy who’s done nothing but serve in the phony-baloney job of "community organizer" and write multiple autobiographies looks like just another creepily self-absorbed lifelong member of the full-time political class that infests every advanced democracy.

Second, it can’t be in Senator Obama’s interest for the punditocracy to spends its time arguing about whether the Republicans’ vice-presidential pick is "even more" inexperienced than the Democrats’ presidential one.

Third, real people don’t define "experience" as appearing on unwatched Sunday-morning talk shows every week for 35 years and having been around long enough to have got both the War on Terror and the Cold War wrong. (On the first point, at the Gun Owners of New Hampshire dinner in the 2000 campaign, I remember Orrin Hatch telling me sadly that he was stunned to discover how few Granite State voters knew who he was.) Sarah Palin and Barack Obama are more or less the same age, but Governor Palin has run a state and a town and a commercial fishing operation, whereas (to reprise a famous line on the Rev Jackson) Senator Obama ain’t run nothin’ but his mouth. She’s done the stuff he’s merely a poseur about. Post-partisan? She took on her own party’s corrupt political culture directly while Obama was sucking up to Wright and Ayers and being just another get-along Chicago machine pol (see his campaign’s thuggish attempt to throttle Stanley Kurtz and Milt Rosenberg on WGN the other night).

Fourth, Governor Palin has what the British Labour Party politician Denis Healy likes to call a "hinterland" – a life beyond politics. Whenever Senator Obama attempts anything non-political (such as bowling), he comes over like a visiting dignitary to a foreign country getting shanghaied into some impenetrable local folk ritual.

Holiness Does Not Require Perfection

Rabbi Dan Fink writes:

Because I was the rabbi’s son, I learned that holy vessels are made from the same mud and clay as everything else.

Clergy kids rarely share the attitude of reverence that most people of faith bring to religious life; that sort of sanctity is sustained by a strong measure of hushed, respectful distance – and distance is the one thing that clergy kids don’t have.

As a child, I often felt like Dorothy Gale, peaking behind the curtain and discovering that the great and powerful Wizard of Oz is, in fact, an ordinary guy.

Throughout my boyhood, our family dinner conversations often turned to Dad’s day at the office. His work-day recollections taught me a great deal about human foibles and the fallibility of the synagogue community.

A highly respected cantor was having an affair. Wealthy donors complained about Dad’s anti-war activism and threatened to withhold their pledges if he continued to speak out about Vietnam. A much-beloved rabbi at the nearby Conservative synagogue was an alcoholic. The families of my Hebrew school classmates – and teachers – suffered their fair share of dysfunction.

Our own rabbinic household posed challenges, too. It’s hard to think of the rabbi as a symbol of holiness when you are 15 and he is your father.

It wasn’t just people. I knew the jewels on the Torah covers were cheap plastic imitations, and I’d seen the janitor turn off the Eternal Light when closing up the synagogue building.

Even our congregational prayer book was revealed to me as flawed: in its opening pages, where it acknowledged the rabbis who had contributed to it, I found Dad’s name – spelled with the wrong middle initial.

Thus I lost my innocence early. For the rabbi’s kids, synagogues are like hot dogs: It doesn’t help to know too much about what goes into them. I knew too much, and my knowledge left me jaded.

A Woman Leads Kiddish At Bnai David

Reb Mimi Feigelson, who some say was the first woman ordained an Orthodox rabbi (99% of Orthodox Jews would not recognize any woman as a rabbi), led the shul kiddish one Shabbos morning three weeks back.

Leading the kiddish has been a ritual traditionally left to men.

This is the first time I know of a woman leading the kiddish (for an audience of men and women) at an Orthodox shul.

When Reb Mimi took to the bima, there was a huge cheer from the women’s section.

From JewishSF.com, March 8, 2002:

Mimi Feigelson considers herself a rabbi. And in the Reform, Conservative, Reconstructionist or Renewal communities, no one would question that. Certainly she is learned enough, has studied enough, has the proper credentials. And those who have studied with her can’t say enough about her — she definitely has that rabbinic aura.

But she won’t use the title. Because in her world — which is Orthodox — things are not so simple.

Although she received smicha (rabbinic ordination) in 1994 from Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach, she kept it a secret from most people. And it remained that way until a reporter from the Jewish Week in New York followed up on a rumor. Feigelson was outed as having Orthodox smicha in December of 2000, shortly after an Orthodox rabbi granted smicha to Eveline Goodman-Thau.

"I live within the Orthodox world," said Feigelson, 39, in a telephone interview from Los Angeles. "That is my spiritual community."

According to her reading of the sources, Feigelson believes a woman can be a rabbi. But her community does not agree. "I did not want to be marginalized for something that is halachically permissible. So in order to honor the community I live within, this is the choice I made."

The Jerusalem-based Feigelson, who has a two-year teaching appointment at the University of Judaism in Los Angeles, will be a scholar in residence at San Francisco’s Congregation Beth Sholom today and tomorrow.

For an Orthodox woman, Feigelson has made some rather unorthodox choices. Her personal style is one; she wears her long hair in a ponytail — except for one thin braid on the opposite side — and can often be seen in a tie-dyed dress.

Her position at the University of Judaism, a seminary for Conservative rabbis, is another, as is her upcoming weekend at the Conservative Beth Sholom. Feigelson is known by some Bay Area Jews who studied with her during Passover last year in Dharamsala, India. This will be the first year in four she won’t be leading a seder in the home of the Dalai Lama.

Feigelson, who specializes not only in Torah, but also in Chassidic literature and thought, strongly believes in teaching to those who want to learn, whether they be the students at Yakar, the Orthodox yeshiva in Jerusalem that she co-founded, or the completely secular Israelis traipsing through India. This also puts her at odds with the Orthodox establishment, whose teachers, for the most part, offer instruction only within the Orthodox community.

When approached to participate in the seders and seminars in Dharamsala, "I felt it was an amazing opportunity to bring God to a place where God already is," said Feigelson.

Meeting secular Israelis who are open to learning Torah in Israel is next to impossible, she said.

"To come into contact with them would take weeks and months of building trust," she said. "In India they’re open; they’re there. When we’re on a journey, everyone we meet is a teacher. When we’re in our homes, that’s when our skepticism and doubt and fear come in."

Sarah Palin Heats Half Of The Homes In Alaska

Jeff Taylor writes that Sarah is so hot that

  • Bob Dole threw his Viagra away after seeing her on Glenn Beck’s show.
  • Bill Clinton just offered her an internship.
  • Half of all homes in Alaska are heated by her.
  • Palin was once sued by Roy Cooper for contributing to global warming.
  • Her pinned-up hairdo is mandated by the Alaskan Wildlife Commission because when she wears it down, the state’s ice caps melt and polar bears drown.
  • She was banned from Abercrombie & Fitch after making employees feel unattractive while shopping for her kids.
