‘My God Is A Radio Talkshow Host’

A friend calls. “How is your moral bank account?”

“Overdrawn,” I say.

“There’s a bizarro Luke Ford out there who wants to be an Orthodox Jew but all the synagogues reject him,” he says.

“We should do a Shabbos dinner with Fran Prager,” he says. “That would be amazing if you started dating Fran Prager.”

“She’s 20 years older than me,” I say.

“That would be amazing,” he says. “Age doesn’t matter. You want to be close to Dennis Prager. So you date his ex-wife. Either one of them. You could say to Dennis, ‘I’m dating your ex-wife.’ And then when his kids were over, you’d be the step-father. We’re family now.”

“You’re a bad man,” I say.

“Would you legally change your name to Luke Prager?” he asks. “I see it now. Your van would be parked there. ‘My God is a Radio Talkshow Host.’ That would be the bumper sticker.

“I can’t wait.

“Michael Medved will be at the reception. Hugh Hewitt. Rabbi Hier.”

“Reception for what?” I say.

“The wedding reception,” he says. “We’ll have an incredible collection of people walking with you to shul that day for the wedding. Your followers. We’ll be like that ‘I want to teach the world to sing’ Coke ad but we’ll all be walking behind you. I’ll have a drum.

“Oh no, you’ll be riding a donkey to the synagogue for the wedding. On the donkey, beard down to your knees, talis, giant bra-cup yarmulke, and the donkey neighing. Min Ho chasing the donkey.

“The wedding will be officiated by Rabbi Bobby Fischer.

“This would be the ultimate collection of misfits.”

Resentment of the Rich Never Employed Anyone

That was Dennis Prager’s great line on his radio show today. “Resentment of the rich does not help the poor. It just hurts the country.”

Prager’s solution for our unemployment problem? Cut taxes.

I think the solution is for Obama to give more speeches and to hold more summit. That will really generate job growth.

Prager said that the reason that we got into this recession was the government intervening in who should get home loans. All the loans that had to be given to people who lenders did not want to lend to because the odds of getting paid back were low.

All these government manipulations inflated home prices and then set us up for this crash. The government distorted the economy. The government can do anything it wants. It does not have to answer to the free spending and saving of people.

Dennis said his own son worked in finance (perhaps Wall Street). I assume he’s talking about David, who’s in his mid twenties. I thought David was becoming an Orthodox rabbi?

More.

My Fantasy Girl

Thursday night at Workmen’s Circle, I read this story:

I met Jane at UCLA in the fall of 1988. I was an atheistic communist at the time, lost in the early stages of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. I spent most of that school year in bed with what felt like the flu. I only finished three classes.
Jane was a compact, busty Christian from Korea. I wanted to be her missionary of love and baptize her into my cult.
Jane was the sweetest girl. She had this shy retiring smile that would make her eyes disappear into slits. I often felt that she wanted to reveal more to me, but as she sensibly pointed out when I started flirting with her, ‘You have a girlfriend.’
Many times when I was with my atheist girlfriend, I imagined I was with Jane.
I feared it would never happen, but a man can dream, can’t he? That voluptuousness. That snugness. That innocence. That Christianity. I wanted in.
Jane represented the goodness of the Christian home I’d grown up in and plooking her would be a simultaneous exploration of my parents’ values and a return to a paradise lost.
When Chronic Fatigue Syndrome forced me to leave UCLA, I moved back home with my Christian parents, embraced Judaism on my own terms, grew a beard, answered the phone ‘Shalom’, and fantasized about Jane.
I wrote her a couple of times a year and on average she wrote me back once a year.
I became really religious. I abstained from masturbation for 14 months straight, the longest stretch of my adulthood. I refused to shake hands with women. I was going to be the real deal.
Then I met a Jewish girl with amazing qualities. My resolve faded before such abundance, before such a bountiful playground for my wicked desires.
I plooked her constantly in my mother’s old bed until I met someone hotter and then I plooked her until she gave me the boot and then I kept plooking women until partially recovering my health and moving to Los Angeles in March 1994 to work for my hero, the conservative talk show host and Jewish theologian Dennis Prager.
One day in April, Jane came to visit me. I had a friend’s place in Westwood all to myself. I felt as triumphant as Douglas MacArthur returning to the Philippines. I had proven it was not all psychological. I was a warrior and I had returned home for my prize.
Jane wasn’t as hot as she used to be at 18 but she was still my fantasy.
We sat outside on the deck. The sun shone upon us. I turned the conversation to sex. Jane looked at me, leaned over and kissed me.
I kissed her back. Then I gathered her in my arms and walked her to the bedroom. I took off her clothes. Everything seemed possible. I could resume a grand life, an even better life than I had before illness. I finally had what I wanted but when it came time for the ultimate deed, it was awful. It was the worst of my life.
It was all so new to her that she couldn’t relax into it. With time and love and commitment, it might’ve worked out.
‘This is what I’ve been fantasizing about for all these years?’ I thought. ‘I’m sure the Torah has something to say about this.’
After a string of failures, I told her, ‘You’ll have other lovers and it will be better for you as you go along.’
Our communication was excellent. I told her I’d been fantasizing about her since the day we met. She was confused. How could I feel that way when I had a girlfriend?
I told her that the heart has reasons of its own that the mind will never understand.
One night my former girlfriend from UCLA came over with a bag of potatoes. It didn’t take much effort to get together with her.
Afterwards, she asked me, ‘How many girls have you been with since me?’
‘About ten,’ I said. ‘How many guys have you been with?’
‘One,’ she said. ‘Those other girls, they taught you well. You used to be really awkward.’
I felt good. I had come of age. I was smooth. I was a man. I was creating my own life. I was combining Judaism with hedonism. I was taking my values out of the dusty shul and into the shiny world, offering ethical monotheism and enlightened pleasure to all who would listen. I had the master’s touch. I was Guru Luke. I was Dr. Ford. I was Rabbi Levi. I was having the best of both worlds, the best of my parents’ world, and the best of Dennis Prager’s world, and I was combining them with the best of the hot young stuff at university.
The next day Jane came over. In the morning while I was shaving, I thought about how easily I could fulfill Jane’s fantasy. She was sitting on the bed looking at me.
Then she asked me, ‘What are we?’
‘We’re daytime friends and nighttime lovers,’ I said.
‘Have there been other lovers?’ she asked.
‘Yes,’ I said.
The next time she came over, she said she couldn’t see me any more.
And indeed I never saw her again.
I kicked myself for years afterwards for telling her the truth about my infidelity and thus losing access to her body and soul, to her sweetness and light, to the best antidotes for my darkness and homelessness within.
Ten years passed since that Spring of ’94 and I Googled her name and emailed her. She made a short reply, mystified about why I would contact her. I wrote back. She did not answer.
A few more years passed and I emailed her again. I wanted to make things right. I wanted to apologize. I wanted to be with her again. And again. And again, until it was good. Until it was evening and it was morning, and Luke said it was very good.
She did not reply.
According to Google, Jane has not married.

D. emails: “The shame I feel today, Sunny Jim, is boundless. How your dear old dad wishes he had throttled the life out of you when you were but a little joey thus sparing that audience the awful spectacle of you flailing about trying to be “controversial.” The stony silence of the attendees is a good indication of how badly you failed as an entertainer and “writer.” A story as boring and pointless as the one you told cannot be saved by any amount of shouting, arm waiving and table pounding. Hang your head in shame, mate. You not only embarrassed yourself, but your family as well. Know that on some moonless night I’ll gut you and strangle you with your own intestines, you attention-seeking ponce.”

Demonizing Those Against Illegal Immigration

Stephen Steinlight emails:

Hi, Friends,

I’ve written to several of you over the last months about the rampant McCarthyism employed by my opponents in the immigration debate (NCLR, SPLC, HIAS, LCCR, etc) who have turned the act of disagreeing with them in a policy dispute into sufficient cause to label them nativists, bigots, racists, haters — take your pick. These accusations are knowingly based on lies and are, therefore in the first instance, slander, and therefore a violation of the Ten Commandment’s injunction “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.” By seeking to vilify, marginalize and silence their opponents this is also an assault on the First Amendment and the democratic process. Finally, it is incitement to violence.

It’s not news to many of you that I was blacklisted by Hadassah on the basis of fabricated and patently absurd allegations without ever having a chance to refute them– a source of real anguish because I love the organization and have spoken to rave reviews to some 20+ chapters. I should underscore that this action was taken by the national office, not the local chapters. It is indicative of the lack of anything remotely resembling democratic” decision-making in such organizations that none of my hosts were even aware that Hadassah has a position on the immigration debate. (The same is true, I’ve discovered, of B’nai B’rith.) That the Anti-Defamation League defamed me based on lies whose veracity they never bothered to check — such is their belief in truth and justice — bothers me a great deal less. I consider it a point of honor to be “defamed” by an organization that sought to deny the Armenian Genocide to curry favor with the Turks — a source of shame to all Holocaust survivors and to every living Jew with a conscience.

I’m passing along a thoughtful even eloquent brief history/analysis of when and why our opponents decided to launch this campaign of vilification. I hope you find it compelling reading. It is written by my executive director and dear friend, Mark Krikorian. On another occasion I’ll send you a report on the Southern Poverty Law Center that has been the target of exposes and intense criticism for its slimy, unethical operations — and these attacks on its credibility do not come from right wing publications but by such journals as The Nation, Harper’s, etc.

I hope you find Mark’s piece an important contribution to knowledge and understanding of what is going on.

I’ll conclude by saying none of the foul machinations of these organizations could succeed except for the silence of the “good people.” I’m saddened, at times appalled, by the lack of outrage in the Jewish community that has shown itself too lazy or indifferent to investigate preposterous and outrageous charges — or has failed to do so because it is more politically convenient to live with lies. Rather than outrage — what I would have expected — I have witnessed either silent acquiessence or active endorsement. It is sad and shameful.

Actress Meredith Baxter Comes Out As A Lesbian

Dennis Prager said on his radio show today: “The LGBT crowd and its defenders tell us that sexual orientation is fixed. Are you worried we are going to make kids gay? That’s the argument and it is largely accurate with regard to the male, but it is not accurate with regard to the female.

“There’s a simplistic view of sexual orientation on the Left because they want to do about sexual orientation what they have done with the data about global warming. Cite what they want to push their agenda, not to tell the truth. The truth is that gay men do not choose to be gay but gay women is a more complex question. Meredith Baxter proves my point.”

“Given that she has been married three times [to a man] and had five children, what was she all these years? One of the phony claims of LGBT advocates is that sexual orientation is fixed. What was she doing all these years? Fooling her husbands? Talk about being a great actress. Nothing she did on TV comes close to what she must’ve done in bed.”

Meredith says it was in the last seven years. Prager buys that. “I’m not knocking her. I’m knocking the fraudulent claim that it is all fixed.”

The Boston Globe says:

“I am a lesbian and it was a later-in-life recognition,” Meredith Baxter told Matt Lauer this morning on “Today.”

How Much Hingeing Should A Person Have Before I Publicize Them?

I have never allowed the degree of a person’s hingeing to effect how much I publicize them. Frankly, the more unhinged, the better. This may not be moral, but it is a lot of fun.

The Kashrut Whistleblower

Lou emails: Hi, Luke. I’m sure Mr. Frank appreciates that you and other Jewish bloggers are helping him blow the whistle on the O.U. But has it occurred to you that the man is at least slightly unhinged? Even a man of your piety would agree that if hundreds of roaches are found in a hospital kitchen, kashrut is not the foremost concern.

I supposed we are all entitled to our 15 minutes of fame. Perhaps Mr. Frank should show up at the White House Hanukkah dinner and claim that he is the mashgiach — but he lost his invitation. Can’t wait to see the photos of him and the Obamas scarfin’ down dem latkes.

The Consequences Of Sexting

On his radio show today, Dennis Prager tackled sexting (the sending of explicit images via cell phones).

“What happens to people who are thrust into a world of pure sex at an early age? My prediction? Vast numbers of females will not enjoy sex in their marriage…based on talking to women on the radio precisely about this. The earlier and the more extensive the sexual behavior of the female, the less she identifies sex with joy and more she identifies it with being used, which she is. Whatever feminism has taught about male and female being the same and sex is as meaninglessly joyful to a female as to a male, the victims of that feminist idiocy have been female. The guys are scratching their heads about how lucky they got that a generation of females was raised to believe that they could enjoy sex without commitment like guys can. I don’t think this is good for the guys either. One of the great joys of growing up is to work your way into sex and romance. To win over a female is the biggest single reason men achieve. If you can win over females by doing nothing, which is what is done when you are 15, you will not be ambitious. That will be one of the never-mentioned bad consequences to boys. When I was in high school, I believed I had to become something to get a pretty girl. I had to be a man in some way. I recall very vividly as much as I love music, I wanted to be good at piano to get a girl. Anything that made a girl go wow, I pursued. That’s been true since caveman. Look at me, I killed lion better. And he got the women. The klutz who couldn’t kill a lion engaged in auto-eroticism.”

“There’s a massive loss here to a generation with the staggering sexualization of their lives, the reduction of young people into rabits. Hugh Hefner chose the rabbit as the symbol of Playboy because rabbits have a lot of sex and reproduce a lot… When humans become rabbits, you have sex more but enjoy it less. Much of the enjoyment of sex is earning it, particularly for the man. Earning it is half the fun…

“The female of the species wants to have some sense of commitment from the male she sleeps with. This has been shattered by the feminist indoctrination that sex is the same for both sexes.

“This is a generation that has no thrill from the things that thrilled generations passed… If I got a telescope or electric trains, I was tremendously excited. Or a stereo. Or got a chance to go to a restaurant. That was a big deal when I was a kid. Or to go to a baseball game. Big deal. It’s not such a big deal anymore.

“What is a thrill? Adrenalin production. Adrenalin production today is sex because nothing produces adrenalin like sex, but it’s not even sex. Now it is I will send naked photos to you because that is risque.”

“Women have told me about how promiscuous sex when they were young deprived them of later joy of having sex in their marriage or simply as an adult. Whenever anything is in abundance, it loses some of its meaning.”

“I am very aware of how I come across at any given moment… I was realizing as I said it that I sounded like one of these adults, not with it, you’re just hung up about sex.

“Anybody who knows, who has read me, who has heard me, who has my four CDs on male sexuality, if there is anybody who is not hung up about that subject is yours truly. What I am hung about is protecting kids’ innocence. I think it stymies the growth of kids to sexualize them so early.

“The hyper-sophisticated will say that even five year olds according to Freud play with themselves and explore and have sexual feelings. I’m talking about a consciousness in the mind. When I looked up girls skirts when I walked up the steps in kindergarten, I was not thinking about sex. I was thinking what’s under that skirt. It was as innocent as it gets. Obviously it has sexual overtones but I didn’t know that and that’s what matters. The thought that when I was 14, a girl in my class would send me a naked picture of her, it’s a new world, and it’s not a better world for it.”

Report:

WASHINGTON (AP) — Think your kid is not ”sexting”? Think again. Sexting — sharing sexually explicit photos, videos and chat by cell phone or online — is fairly commonplace among young people, despite sometimes grim consequences for those who do it.

More than a quarter of young people have been involved in sexting in some form, an Associated Press-MTV poll found.

That includes Sammy, a 16-year-old from the San Francisco Bay Area who asked that his last name not be used.

Sammy said he had shared naked pictures of himself with girlfriends. He also shared naked pictures of someone else that a friend had sent him.

What he didn’t realize at the time was that young people across the country — in Florida, Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania — have faced charges, in some cases felony charges, for sending nude pictures.

”That’s why I probably wouldn’t do it again,” Sammy said.

Yet, ”I just don’t see it as that big of a problem, personally.”

That was the view of nearly half of those surveyed who have been involved in sexting. The other half said it’s a serious problem — and did it anyway. Knowing there might be consequences hasn’t stopped them.

”There’s definitely the invincibility factor that young people feel,” said Kathleen Bogle, a sociology professor at La Salle University in Philadelphia and author of the book ”Hooking Up: Sex, Dating and Relationships on Campus.”

”That’s part of the reason why they have a high rate of car accidents and things like that, is they think, `Oh, well, that will never happen to me,”’ Bogle said.

When Did I Reject My Shuls?

I must confess I never thought about this perspective from a friend:

So before I emailed you I wanted to know how you are doing. Instead of just asking you, I went to the best location there is: lukeford.net. I read your post about how your father might view you. It was great, intense. I was really hoping for a whole history of how the hell you became a Cowboys fan and joined the “dark side” but it never came…And I read that part about your breakup with some chick, I’m sorry about that dude.

Also, I didnt know that you aren’t in [shul]…anymore. I’m sorry man, that must suck.

But reading your blog led me to a thought or a question that sparked my intuition, and although I’m sure you might have asked yourself this a million times, I never thought of it to ask you:

You often write about all the shuls that have rejected you, or that have thrown you out. Which leads me to believe that you really feel like they have rejected you, which hurts. But do you think that somewhere in your subconscious you are really rejected them? Perhaps in the back of your mind you think, “I am who I am and I’m just being me” which is cool. At the same time when the Rabbi came to see you and said, “Let’s think strategically,” you had a choice to think that way and instead you shunned him. In a sense, you rejected him. You rejected [them]. So perhaps maybe in the beginning it was somewhat of shuls rejecting you, but perhaps at this point you are rejecting them. Have you ever thought about it that way? Do you ever think about it that way? Does it even matter?
