Shaking Hands With Women

Many Orthodox Jewish men will not touch women (outside of their spouse and immediate family).

I shake hands with women but I don’t enjoy it.

Reuven posts:

Around 2003 there was that "Ethicist" (Randy Cohen) article about that woman who wanted to void some business dealings with a frum Jew because he explained that he does not shake women’s hands. I remember Rav Schachter suggesting the "dead fish" appraoch when asked after shiur.

A few days later another member of the shiur told me that Rav Schachter paskined for him that it was assur to shake hands. It turned out that he was a member of the YU Bowl team, and customarily after games the two teams shake hands. In that case Rav Schachter felt that the hand shake wa in no way casual, and in fact when asked further he explained that the bachur represented YU, an orthodox institution, and it would send the wrong message if the bochur would shake hands with girls on the other team.

Also, Rav Schachter does state when certain rules fall under "common sense", and I don’t think that he felt this issue to be simply that. He doesn’t quote Teshuvos just for the sake of it.

Tzvee posts: This surely is common sense. There is no way that a handshake in a business situation, as gil has set it forth, has any romantic or sexual aspect. To interfere with normal transactions in a corporate office by interjecting an opinion here is a disruption to an individual’s ability to conduct normal commercial life, something that the halakhah does not have any business or interest interfering with.

Meir posts: Rav Schachter told me that Rav Soloveitchik shook women’s hands. He said nothing to me about the "dead fish" tactic.

Anon posts: I heard from the posek R. David Cohen of NY that if a woman sticks out her hand one should shake it. He rejected the possibility of trying to explain to her that you don’t do it. He also mentioned R. Hutner saying that one should "take it like a hot potato".
He did however say that one should not initiate a handshake even though it would be technically permissible.
He did however say that R. SR Hirsch did initiate handshakes with women.
I heard from a talmid of R. JB Solovetchik that he initiated handshakes with women. In one instance the women did not shake his hand and he said something like, "If you aren’t shaking my hand because you are angry with me, OK. But, if you aren’t because you think it is assur then do it."

As for the "dead fish" shake– the Rav, zt"l, gave everyone, including men, such a handshake.

Bathroom Sex Scandal Ruined Her Life

Let this be a warning to the young people.

Oy, this does not make Jews look good. "Feldman" is a Jewish name right?

I can only imagine how I would’ve reacted if the police caught my wife in such a position.

Maven emails: "What in the world makes you think that woman in Des Moines with a husband named Kelly is Jewish? Because she has a German last name? The theorist of Hitler’s race laws was named Alfred Rosenberg. I’ve been callerd by people with my last name who are apparently Mormons originally from Germany, never Jewish. You are like some kind of old school "antisemite" some times: The Jews sank the Titanic! What are you talking about, an iceberg sank the Titanic?! Iceberg, Goldberg, what’s the difference?"

My bad. Here’s a picture of Lois Feldman next to a Christmas tree:

Here’s the guy, Ross, kissing another woman:

From the Des Moines Register:

A Carroll woman who was caught having sex in the men’s room at an Iowa Hawkeye football game in Minneapolis last weekend says she’d had so much wine before kickoff that she doesn’t remember walking into the restroom, the man she had sex with in a stall, or when the police opened the door.

What Lois Feldman, 38, will remember is the humiliation afterward.

“It’s ruined my life,” she said through tears today. “Not just the incident but the press.”

Feldman, a married mother of three, has been the target of Internet jokes and prank telephone calls today. She was fired this morning from an assisted living center, where she had been an administrator.

Feldman said her husband, Kelly, has been supportive. She said he faults himself for not going with her when she left her seat to use the restroom before halftime.

“I don’t know what happened,” Lois Feldman said. “But I don’t deny that it did happen because obviously there are police reports.”

Police ticketed Feldman, 38, and Ross Walsh, 26, of Linden for indecent conduct Saturday night.

A security guard who said he saw the two having sex through a gap in a men’s restroom stall flagged down campus police, according to the police report.

By the time an officer arrived, about a dozen people were cheering and laughing in the bathroom while Feldman and Walsh were inside the stall, the report said.

The officer pushed his way through the crowd, opened the door and separated Feldman and Walsh, the report said.

Police described both Feldman and Walsh as upset, drunk and uncooperative.

Chuck Miner, deputy chief of the University of Minnesota police department, said officers tracked down Feldman’s husband.

“I’m not sure how they made contact with her husband, but they needed her husband to help identify her” because she’d given the wrong middle name.

Miner said police didn’t measure the blood-alcohol level of Feldman or Walsh. Asked to respond to Feldman’s claim that she was too drunk to recall the incident, Miner said: “That’s probably an accurate statement.”

Feldman said she’d never met Walsh.

“I don’t know who this man is,” she said today. “I just found out his name in the paper last night.”

Swinging Hasidim

Dan Gambiera writes:

People have sex. They don’t always do it the way that social mores dictate. It’s been that way forever. The only thing you can do is make choices you can live with.

One of the big culprits here is the increasing rigidity of marriage customs in 21st Century Haredi enclaves. In small town or village life young people meet and interact. It’s absolutely inevitable. When they do they’re prone to make their own choices. They won’t always make good ones, but that as they say is life.

It’s only in the modern disconnected urban world that you can even have practical separation of the sexes. It only really started in Af-frickin’-ghanistan with the destruction of the country after the Soviet invasion. It’s much more of a problem in the oil-rich Arab states that can afford to keep women economically dependent and absorb the costs of separation.

What you have here is a combination several things.

The first is neurosis. When you can not control the world around you the neurotic response is to obsessively clamp down on what you think you can. In this case, the outside world is frightening and alien. So the community exerts an extreme degree of influence on marriage. Step out of line, wear a red blouse, talk to boys if you are a girl, report crimes to the police, fail to eat cholent or allow the tiniest smidgen of doubt as to the date of your mother’s ritual ablutions and or choose a mate based on our own standards, and you will lose all societally-sanctioned breeding rights. By any objective standard it’s absolutely insane.

We have elaborate mechanisms for determining the suitability of sex and breeding partners from the ability to determine complex immunologic profiles by smell (true fact, that) to visually determining from photographs whether a man likes babies (also verified) or a woman’s basic capacity to survive pregnancy. The frum ghetto system of mate selection does away with all of these.

When your mate is forced upon you, Tevya’s Daughters notwithstanding you get marriage without love. Yes, there may be all sorts of other deep attachment, especially over time. The passion that supports those later deep bonds? The deck is stacked against it if you eliminate that initial attraction.

The ineluctable corollary is nicely stated by Benjamin Franklin:

Where there is marriage without love, there will be love without marriage

The increasingly strict standards designed to isolate the community from the real world and perpetuate its customs will erode those stated standards. When people can not live happily under a set of customs they will violate them. When they violate these customs privately they may redouble their efforts to appear to comply so as not to suffer community sanctions. The beards will get longer. The hats will get blacker. The butcher will have to sell only Hyper Mega Glatt Kosher brisket. But they will abandon them in their hearts.

The presence of alternatives causes even more problems. If the whole world were frum there would be nowhere to go. You would have to comply or die. But there is an alternative – secular society. The destruction of Reform, Conservative and increasingly Modern Orthodox as alternatives to ultra-Orthodox hegemony makes the choice between compliance and complete abandonment of Jewish identity very stark.

This is why Haredi taboos concerning education and access to information are so important to the community. A secular education allows a person to understand the real world. More than that, it makes it possible to survive economically. A Haredi education stresses the minutia of dogma and every more elaborate taboos – laws which can not be questioned, authorities who are beyond reproach. Obedience, albeit a trained and intelligent obedience, is the key to status, control of resources, acceptance and survival.

Even access to independent information is dangerous. If a person sees that people who do not follow his tribal peculiarities lead happy fulfilling lives he is apt to stop thinking of outsiders as the Hated Other and adopt those customs which seem best to him. This, not pornography, is the real reason most of the Haredi reject modern information technology.

Comply or die. Make alternatives quite literally unthinkable. Obedience is valued above everything. Outsiders aren’t even human the same way as members of the tribe. Strict control is exercised over the most basic needs such as food and sex.

In the end it’s like bailing the sea with a sieve. It’s already failing. The question is will it take Judaism down with it or will we have a new reformist movement that will not be hijacked by refugees romanticizing a Talibanesque past that never was.

Children are not capable of giving consent. A pedophilic sexual relationship is not even close to being between equals. The child will almost certainly take serious damage and doesn’t even fully understand what is happening and what it means. Sexual activity carries the risk of pregnancy and serious diseases. The child/victim is not capable of making a rational adult choice about these things.

It’s even worse with animals. A child will grow up to be a competent adult some day unless, G-d forbid, there’s some sort of brain irregularity. The animal never will. It is a dumb beast not endowed with reason.

But let’s get back to the molesters for a moment, shall we? You’ve been enraged at Shmarya for bringing up rabbinical sexual abuse. But you’re quick to condemn Sarah for tolerating consensual sexual relations between adult men. You’re certainly against pedophilia. No doubt about it. And I’ll defend you tooth and nail against anyone who says you support baby-rapers.

Why the disconnect? I’ll tell you.

It comes back to authority. If rabbis and teachers have illicit sexual relations with children or teenagers that’s bad. But exposing them and punishing them for their crimes undermines the authority of people you respect. The urge to protect children is at odds with the even stronger urge to protect the community which gives you your identity. Shaming them reflects on good people like yourself. It makes you angry. So you lash out at the messenger.

To someone like Shamarya or Sarah or me that makes the sin much worse. The diddling rabbis compound the crime of pedophile rape with the abuse of authority.

You see disobedience to authority and damage to the reputation of the community as the greatest sins. I reserve that for harm done to innocents, particularly when those entrusted with power exploit it to facilitate crimes against the powerless.

There are homosexual Hassidim. That’s just the way they are. All the praying and trips to the mikveh in the world won’t change them no matter how much they want it. Marriage is the preferred state in Judaism, and certain male sex acts are completely taboo. They will not be happy trying to live with their essential natures and the rules. Many will look for happiness on the down low. If they do, better they protect themselves and their spouses. What’s worse, a guy sucking dick or a guy sucking dick, dying of a horrible disease and giving it to his wife and their unborn child?

ED WRITES: I am reminded of the joke about a randy woman who approaches a hasidic man in hotel lobby. She tells him that "I have always wanted to have sex with a hasidic man. I want to run my hands through your peyot. I want to twirl you gartel and roll around in your beckishe. Please come up to my room with me." The hasidic man looks at her and in a Brooklyn-Yiddish infelcetd accent says "and vat’s in it for me?"

MAVEN WRITES:

One can guess that had Karaitism become the dominant normative faith, we’d have blogs complaining about the strictures they enforce. No matter what system is set up outside of the individual’s decision, there will be resistance, this is the old heteronomy vs autonomy battle going back to Kant. Yochanan is already there, nostalgic for "old school" practice, so even if the current conservative practice became the norm there would be complaints on various issues.
The same holds true about sexual practice, the range of human desires is so vast that no matter where you draw the line, there will be those beyond the pale. But lines must be drawn for society to function, or we’d have lots of Bundys and Dahmers, and I think all functioning societies accept this. However, historically often the lines drawn are too tight, leading to reaction, as has happened in many societies (cf the victorian era and its aftermath). Often there is a responsive re-drawing of certain lines, which is what is happening today, which then provokes resistance from those who are more comfortable with the previous policies. The sad part is when the same people policing the restrictive lines are the most blatant violators of these rules, and that is clearly the case in many of the more colorful stories, from Spitzer and Lanner and Sobel, etc on to various participants on tznious patrols who get their own S&M fulfillment through harrassing so-called wayward women (and good old Dr. Freud was on the mark in this regard).

To some degree are not the specifically religious violators and the frum world in agreement? The frum say that these things are assur because Hashem said so, and those on the fringes say, if its only about Hashem’s word, well, we think Hashem thought otherwise or doesn’t care so much, and we are "OK". The only response from the frum world would be, like Archie’s, to threaten punishment in the next world. That is clearly inadequate to control certain offenders who have desires but are "learned", and have in their own mind made deals with Gd or figure perhaps Gd is so busy with Nazis, etc, that he won’t bother with a rebbi abusing talmidim, etc, or that caning teen girls is really for their own good, etc, or at the very least, we’ll deal with it in the next world but have fun now (this is a well known reaction to Hindu concepts of punishment through reincarnation- let that guy in the next rebirth deal with it, I’m having fun now…) These cases are where Law and other forms of conscience must step in, and "thank Gd" for this blog and those like it where a voice can be given to those who have suffered.

That being said, I think the chassidic "swinger" issue as presented is just too funny (having grown up around Boro Park, and not being able to even visualize it), and the movie titles submitted here are too funny (no one for Nights of Vaise Zocken?). The Jewish way was always to be able to laugh at these kinds of things. May Yochanan write many more songs!

Hasid Who Allegedly Molested Elderly Man In Hospital Asks Victim, “Are You Jewish?” Before Molesting Him

Report:

The NY Daily News reports:
Accused molestor asked senior his religion before assault BY RICH SCHAPIRO AND SIMONE WEICHSELBAUM

A Torah scholar accused of fondling an elderly man lying in a Manhattan hospital bed first asked his frail victim whether he was Jewish before grabbing his genitals, prosecutors said Thursday.
When the 72-year-old senior replied that he was an atheist, Yakov Kramer allegedly lifted the man’s gown and molested him Wednesday afternoon at New York-Presbyterian Hospital Columbia, prosecutors said.

For the rest of it go to Failed Messiah

UnOrthodox writes: The Haredim seem to be all over the place in major hospitals in NY&NJ.

I was in one of them for a while several years back and it seemed like every time I came out of sedation there was another one of them asking if I wanted a kosher meal or needed help getting the right doctor. My roommate had one of those names that only show up in good Irish neighberhoods yet every time they looked in on me (my family and given names are so Jewish I didn’t need a bris to mark me as Jewish) they went over to see if he or his (noisy) family members visiting with him needed anything too.

Can’t say the same for my Modern Orthodox or Conservative friends. Seems the rest of us have abandoned bikur holim to the Hassidim.

I’m Happy With Everything I’ve Seen From Obama Since The Election

I feared he would be a disaster. Instead, everything he has said and done since the election has been responsible and moderate. He chooses centrists to the most important posts in his cabinet. He’s likely to ask Robert Gates to stay on for at least a year as Defense Secretary. He’s governing to be a president to all Americans, not just those who voted for him.

I certainly prefer watching and listening to Obama than the old-as-death John McCain.

FischelXTeitelbaum:  This Obama’s cabinet picks to date seem pretty reasonable to me
FischelXTeitelbaum:  Not what I would expect from a friend of Bill Ayers
FischelXTeitelbaum:  Now imagine who Sarah Palin might have selected
FischelXTeitelbaum:  What if in two years time the Negro sours on Obama, and comes to realize that he is as white as he is black , no , more so once you take his upbringing into account?

Michael Powell writes:

Faces of the Past:

By its very nature, conservatism looks towards the past and engages in nostalgia. However, this has become a fatal flaw of modern conservativism.

If you take a listen to the talk show of religious conservative Dennis Prager, you will hear an intelligent man reliving cultural battles of a bygone era. In many episodes of his show, Prager will rant on and on about the feminism of 60s radicals like Gloria Steinem, which argued that men and women are inherently the same and are only different in behavior due to cultural conditioning. To hear Prager talk, you would think that this was still the gospel preached at today’s universities.

Prager still talks about how he was opposed to the lowering of the voting age to 18, because 18-year-olds “don’t know anything.” The twenty-sixth amendment, which granted this right, was adopted in 1971.

Prager still rants constantly about the 60s and 70s era phrase that said “Don’t Trust Anyone Over 30” and his outrage over radicals who seized control of Columbia’s campus in 1968. To listen to Prager, you would think that America was still undergoing Woodstock, the Vietnam Era and Watergate, because that is still where he is mentally.

It’s Not A Free Country – eHarmony Forced To Match Gays

Men can no longer gather with men to do good works (through groups such as the Rotary Club). Women sued to be allowed in. Men don’t sue to get into female-only groups. So this destroyed service clubs.

The only place that men can gather with men are religious places and strip clubs.

From HumanEvents.com:

When news broke last week that the homosexual lobby in New Jersey had won a decision against online dating service eHarmony, we were once again reminded that the pursuit of “equal rights” for homosexuals is often an attempt to impose their agenda. It would behoove us to learn from this that the Left, and particularly the militant homosexual wing of the Left, will not stop until they have defiled all that we hold dear and have corrupted all we hold incorruptible.

In what proved to be another case of discrimination victim (gay Eric McKinley) vs. business owner and “bigot” (Neil Clark Warren, founder eHarmony), we learned that McKinley had gotten his little feelings hurt when he learned that eHarmony had no options for men to meet men on their website. According to USA Today, when McKinley saw that only straight couples could meet on eHarmony he found it “very frustrating… very humiliating to think that other people can do it and I can’t."

McKinley filed suit in 2005, and with the help of the New Jersey Civil Rights Division, reached a settlement which resulted in eHarmony paying $5,000 to McKinley, $50,000 to the New Jersey Civil Rights Division, and opening a sister site for gays which will “include photos of same-sex couples, as well as individual same-sex users, in advertising materials used to promote its same-sex matching services.”

Dennis Prager said on his radio show Friday: "It’s not gays, it’s the Left. The Left wants you to attack the gays, that way they’re not attacked. There’s the Left in every group — Jews, Christians, Hispanics… The Left wants you to attack gays so they can say the public is anti-gay. It’s not. It’s anti-Left. Many gays think this is crazy. That if you want to meet gays, you go to a separate website."

Prager applauded eHarmony for fighting for three years to not match gays. "Companies do not have unlimited funds. The state has unlimited funds [to sue]."

"Those conservatives who are angry at eHarmony. What should they have done? Gone out of business?"

"At least it is a separate website but that will be challenged. Separate but equal will be challenged. This is what you get for electing Democrats. They run New Jersey. They put up the Attorney General. They have trial lawyers as one of their two biggest constituencies for giving money.

"They’re smart. They send up smokescreens. It’s the Right taking our liberty. The Patriot Act…

"A viable company can’t say they only want to match men and women anymore. What if a company just wants to match Christians? Or African-Americans? Or Jews to meet Jews?"

"God forbid a golf club is only for men. It is might as well be Jim Crow. Everything is compared to Jim Crow.

"I remember when I first moved to California [circa 1977] and I joined the Simi Valley Rotary Club. It was all men. It was a place for men to do good works. That was all they did. I was blown away at the goodness of the Rotary Club. Do you know what macho was? Setting up a scholarship for retarded kids in your neighborhood. Guys would compete to do good works.

"Don’t blame women. The Left argued it’s not fair that the Rotary Clubs were for men. Same thing with the Boy Scouts. You do as we say or we destroy you. That’s the Left. And they can thanks to lawyers and the Democratic Party.

Dennis Prager writes:

That the news media were biased in the 2008 presidential election is now acknowledged by fair-minded people, left or right

As Time Magazine’s Mark Halperin said this weekend at a Politico/USC Conference on the 2008 election: “It’s the most disgusting failure of people in our business. … It was extreme bias, extreme pro-Obama coverage."

Given how obvious this bias is, the question is not whether liberals in the media tend to offer biased reporting. The question is why? Why can’t liberal news people report the news without any slant?

The answer is that for people on the left, all — I repeat, all — professions are a means to an end, not ends in themselves. That end is the social transformation of society, meaning the promoting of “social justice” as the left understands that term.

For most liberal news reporters, therefore, the purpose of news reporting is not to report news as objectively as possible. The purpose of the media in general and of reporting specifically is to promote social justice and the social transformation of society.

For most liberal judges, the primary purpose of being a judge is to promote social justice and transform society. That is why liberal judges are so much more likely to be judicial activists than conservative judges. Most liberal judges do not see their roles as merely adjudicating a dispute according to the law. They see their role primarily as using the law and their power to rule on the law to promote social justice.

For most university professors — and many high school teachers, as well — outside of the natural sciences and math, the same holds true. The task of a teacher is to teach, i.e., to convey the most important information as honestly as possible. But, again, this conflicts with the social justice goal of the left. History teachers who merely teach history are of little use to the left. History — and English and political science, and sociology and other liberal arts — teachers must use their classroom to produce young people who will wish to engage in society-transforming work for social justice.

For most liberals in the arts (there are very few conservatives in the arts) there is no denial of their having an agenda. They state quite candidly that the purpose of the arts is to challenge the (conservative) status quo, to raise political and social consciousness by advancing a “progressive” political and social agenda. The artist whose agenda is merely to produce beautiful art is looked upon as a reactionary buffoon, and is not likely to be taken seriously — no matter how talented — in the worlds of music, dance, painting, and sculpture.

Even the natural sciences are increasingly subject to being rendered a means to a “progressive” end. There was the pseudo-threat of heterosexual AIDS in America — science manipulated in order to de-stigmatize AIDS as primarily a gay man’s disease and to increase funding for AIDS research. There are the exaggerated secondhand smoke data popularized so as to decrease smoking and fight “Big Tobacco.” And now we have the scientifically questionable belief in man-made carbon emissions causing global warming leading to natural catastrophe — and recommended “solutions” many of which, if adopted, will serve the goal of undermining corporate capitalism.

The best analogy of the directing of all human endeavors toward a left-wing purpose would be those early medieval centuries of European life when just about everything man made was supposed to reflect a religious consciousness. Virtually nothing stood apart from the Church. The arts were religious, the sciences were handmaidens of theology, and schools were religious in nature.

Most moderns look upon that period as a dark age — perhaps a bit unfairly at times. But the people who most scorn what they deem the religious “Dark Ages” are trying to building a secular-left dark age in our time. Because the left is a religion, a substitute for the Christianity it seeks to displace.

Does True Love Wait?

Moe writes on Slate.com: True love does not wait. True love necks, cops a feel. True love tries to put off the inevitable and distracts itself giving a blow job. True love gags a little bit, momentarily forgets it is true love, re-evaluates itself—if this does not feel particularly loving, does my selfless dedication to this higher purpose at least underscore its truth?—oh crap here come the Park Police … Now, I speak as an avowed nonbeliever in the sacredness of sex. I have committed the act hundreds of times, not always under the influence of alcohol, and never once felt the presence of the Holy Spirit.

A Woman’s Most Important Quality Is Her Beauty

If the Torah says it, it must be true!

If you hate this teaching, you hate the Torah!

Don’t blame me, blame God!

Rabbi Ari Enkin writes:

There’s a widespread misconception that a religious Jewish woman is not permitted to expose her beauty. Such a concept, however, does not seems to exist anywhere in Torah literature. In fact, both the Torah and Talmud teach that a woman is to make herself attractive in the eyes of her husband whenever possible.[1] A woman who is sensitive to her appearance and cleanliness, not to mention prudent with the household budget, is regarded by our sages as the perfect wife.[2] So too, a married man must take pride in his own appearance as well.[3] Make no mistake, making oneself "attractive" is a requirement, though making oneself "attracting" is in fact a prohibition and contrary to the spirit of the Torah. Both men and women[4] must ensure that their appearance and conduct not lead to sin. One should not overly compliment a woman on her beauty.[5]

One will notice that throughout the Tanach women are often introduced by means of a description of their physical appearance.[6] It is likely from such precedents that our sages teach that a woman’s most important quality is her beauty.[7] Rabbi Yishmael himself would personally tend to and finance the beauty needs of women, especially the poorer ones, in order to better their chances of finding a suitable mate. Consistent with his commitment to proper grooming and appearance, his concern for women extended even to their dental needs. Rabbi Yishmael’s efforts made such an impression and were so effective in saving marriages that we are told that all the women of Israel wept when he passed away.[8]

We are taught that a beautiful wife adds significantly to the thrill and delight of a marriage.[9] As such, it is considered completely legitimate to marry a woman based foremost on her looks.[10] One should also bear in mind that one’s wife should be attractive in order to better one’s chances that one’s children will be attractive, as well.[11]

..There are many rabbis who try and counsel their students away from these "obvious" attributes when seeking a wife, arguing that they are not things that a "Ben Torah" should be thinking about. I say — TIYUVTA.

Yid posts: "That "a beautiful wife adds significantly to the thrill of a marriage, and it is considered completely legitimate to marry a woman based foremost on her looks" is both obvious & human nature. It’s like saying that eating is enjoyable, and it is OK to enjoy a good dinner."

Tzurah writes: It took me years to even admit to myself (not to mention a shadchan) that looks was important to me. I would continue dating with some women that I had very little attraction to because I just felt so terribly guilty about ending the match. I just wonder how many guys are out there in a non-ideal match because they were trying to be too much of a tzadik.

Another perspective that my wife told me about is that among many frum girls, looking good is never discussed, and the art of wearing clothes well and applying makeup is shunned while growing up until suddenly, girls *have* to care about it for shidduchim. Then, since it’s now something of great importance that they have no control over (they never learned how to present themselves well), it gains a magical, orverarching status.

Kishke posts: This is a load of hogwash. Who are these "many rabbis?" How about naming a few? Where’d you get this supposed "widespread misconception that a religious Jewish woman is not permitted to expose her beauty." Please, come to Flatbush, Boro Park, Lakewood, and tell me that women there do not "expose their beauty." There is no such "widespread misconception"; there are no “many rabbis.” I’ve been a part of the "charedi" community all my life and have never heard tell of any who say that it’s not important for a ben Torah to find his prospective wife attractive. You’ve set up a straw man and are vigorously knocking it down. It’s all nonsense.

Doda posts: Google Sarah Palin. Throughout the campaign, she basically dressed like a frum woman. Based on what men say about her, I guess she was attracting.

I agree most rabbis seem to push their students in the opposite direction. I think part of the problem is that when a lot of boys start looking, they have not been around women and so they have a very narrow view of beauty. They do not necessarily know how many types they could like, and they are impressionable. So when the community tells them to ask what size the girl is, they decide any woman above a certain size is pasul. What’s called attractive is often cookie-cutter. I once heard a shiur by Rav Shechter given to YU boys about how neat a girl must look. But I happen to know many guys don’t always or only want a girl to look perfect with nothing out of place.

Another problem is that since women are people, they can’t be important only or mainly for their looks. If we are also created in God’s image, and are endowed with intelligence, there should be other things to give us value. And what about unattractive women? God created them, they must have a purpose.

Also, why only discuss Hazal’s assigning importance to looks? There are also gemaras that talk about the importance of money in shiddukhim. For instance, Rashi brings the midrash that Abraham gave Eliezer a sh’tar of his property so everyone would chase after Isaac. Should money also be the basis for marriages? Should we encourage this?

But if you want to address a problem, you should look at what women have to deal with if they are not attracted to a man. When I was dating, if I rejected a boy because of his looks, I would be told that my priorities are messed up. I needed to look at his neshama. I needed to talk to a rebbetzin. But you don’t go to bed with a neshama. I know the gemara does not emphasize male beauty; in fact, a woman may marry a man without seeing him. But I’ll tell you, it is important and no woman should be made guilty for being human.

Also I think it’s unrealistic to expect women to be makhavven their beauty. Even if a woman is not married, she knows how her looks are appreciated. It’s only natural for her to want to get men to look at her. And yes there are gemaras against this. Nevertheless.

I don’t even buy that there is a difference between attractive and sexy. Sarah Palin is attractive. She behaves and dresses in a classy manner. Men find her sexy. It’s part of the sexy librarian phenomenon. And obvioously when we’re talking about men dating women, and being attracted to them, we mean sexually. If a man is dating a woman and has no hirhrim about her, either he’s a big zaddik or he’s not attracted to her. In either event, they should probably break up. If he’s that big of a zaddik, he won’t please her.

The Secret Lives Of Hasidic Jews

From WCBSTV.com:

NEW YORK (CBS) ? The overwhelming majority of men and women in New York’s Hasidic Jewish community are strictly pious and scrupulous in their religious observances. But in the course of a three-month investigation CBS 2 HD found something hidden — secrets kept not only from the outside world, but from each other.

Some Hasidic men and women are straying far from their beliefs and breaking their marital vows. CBS 2 HD gained exclusive access into this rigid, ultra religious world, and spoke to Hasidic men and women who broke the rules by sneaking on to the Internet. They betrayed Jewish law and their spouses.

On the Internet there are postings in chat rooms and on Craigslist. One posting advertises a husband and wife, who describe themselves as "frum" or observant. They claim to be from Flatbush and want another Orthodox Jewish woman to join them for sex.

"I know of swingers in the ultra orthodox community, which shocked me to hear it … just the way it would shock anybody else," said "Yossi" of Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Yossi said he knows adultery is taking place because he said he had affairs with several Hasidic women.

YOSSI:

The 36-year-old was raised strictly Hasidic and was in his teens when a bride was chosen for him.

"I met my wife for just very brief period and then months later we got married and we hadn’t seen each other. I never felt committed to her in any way," Yossi said.

He was not physically attracted to my wife, "But given the culture I was raised in I did not think it an appropriate response to say I don’t want this marriage arrangement because I do not like the way she looks. I did not think that would be an acceptable thing to say."

He said he only had a vague idea what sex was until his wedding night.

"I didn’t know what sex was until the day I got married. There is someone who teaches you the specifics. They teach you the basic function of sex, the nuts and bolts, what goes where," Yossi said.

As the years went on Yossi said he felt trapped with a woman he did not love, with five children and a job he hated. He went on the Internet, looking for answers and for people who felt as alone as he did.

FROM MY LIVE CAM CHAT:

FischelXTeitelbaum:  Craigslist is to the frum what alcohol is to the Irish
FischelXTeitelbaum:  I mean the frum are using the Craigslist to do all kinds of sinning
Roflcopter:  no, the frum are using "xtube" for all kinds of sinning.
FischelXTeitelbaum:  If they had no craigslist they would be living frum lives, just as the Irish would be writing their stories and poems if they were but sober
