Season’s Greetings

Just before every major Jewish holiday, you find in Jewish publications such as The Jewish Week and the Jewish Journal of Los Angeles various forms of "Season’s Greetings" aka "Rosh Hashanah Greetings" aka "Chanukkah Greetings" aka "Passover Greetings" from numerous politicians and businesses and non-profits with money to burn.

Dr. Marc B. Shapiro noted that a non-Orthodox synagogue in an edition of The Jewish Week just before Chanukkah takes out an ad for "Chanukkah Greetings." This whole notion of "Season’s Greetings" is a Gentile one. And this one non-Orthodox synagogue wishes people "a healthy and peaceful Chanukkah." As if Chanukkah has nothing to do with the fighting strength of the Maccabees and we’re instead celebrating the Prince of Peace aka Jesus.

(From Dr. Shapiro’s second lecture on David Zvi Hoffman for Torah in Motion.)

Bizarre Profile Of FrumSatire

On Tabletmag.com, Hadara Graubert writes the strangest thing I’ve read online all week. Here’s an excerpt: "As someone who straddles the line between the Orthodox and secular worlds, Fried catches flak from all sides. The website Jewschool.com refuses to publish him; an editor there found his work offensive to women rabbis. (In truth, Fried supports the ordination of Orthodox women, one of the few bloggers from the Orthodox world willing to engage with the topic openly.) He’s also been blacklisted by The Jewish Press after a piece of his gently mocking the custom of Kiddush (a light meal and wine following the morning Shabbat service) generated 50 letters calling him a heretic. Plus, an editor’s daughter found sexually suggestive content on Frum Satire. “Dude, you publish Shmuley Boteach every week!” he responded. “Give me a break.”"

There’s been no blacklist of Heshy Fried on the part of The Jewish Press. The bit about Jewschool.com refusing to publish him sounds bizarre. Jewschool is a collection of bloggers. I suppose it refuses to publish millions of people. It’s just one small blog of like-minded leftists. It’s not really congruent with what Heshy Fried does.

Which Orthodox bloggers fear engaging the topic of the ordination of women? Nobody I know of. Most Orthodox bloggers don’t engage in the topic for the same reason that most Dallas Cowboy bloggers don’t touch the topic — it is outside of their chosen topic of interest. Most Orthodox bloggers don’t engage openly in reviews of non-kosher restaurants either. It’s just not something they’re into.

Does anyone fact-check or edit the things Hadara writes? This one on Heshy Fried seems to have been published with a reckless disregard for the truth.

I Googled Hadara and could find no way to send her an email. If I were going to publish this recklessly, I too would see to it that people could not email me.

Jason Maoz, Editor of The Jewish Press, replies to my inquiry Monday morning: "This morning, some 72 hours after I first alerted Alana Newhouse and Hadara Graubart as to the inaccuracies in the piece, the original text was finally amended and now claims that Mr. Fried has been having problems with The Jewish Press since his article appeared. This is a curious choice of words since — as is obvious from my January e-mail to Mr. Fried — he was not "blacklisted," as the article originally claimed, nor has he been in trouble with us, as the revised version of Ms. Graubart’s piece would have it. In fact, he was invited to submit new material despite the fact that we received some complaints. Ms. Graubart apologized for not having called me while she was preparing the piece. She seemed sincerely contrite. I still don’t know, however, whether she misquoted Mr. Fried or mischaractarized what he said — or whether Mr. Fried has a problem with the truth."

On January 28, 2009, Jason emailed Heshy Fried: "I’ve got a bit of a dilemma. While there hasn’t exactly been a flood of negative responses to your first piece, there have been a number along the lines of a note someone sent to the publisher last week saying: "My 14-year-old daughter read Heshy Fried’s article on Kiddushes and she went to his website per the URL given at the bottom of the piece. The very first thing she saw was an article whose first sentence contained the word ‘horny.’ Is this kind of website/writer something The Jewish Press should be publicizing?" I’m not sure what to do at this point. Maybe I’ll run another piece in the next couple of weeks and see if a real backlash develops. Meanwhile, how about sending an original piece rather than a recycled old post?"

A quick search of the Hirhurim blog came up with 9 posts on the subject of ordaining women, including one that has the Forward quoting the blog!

Why Does Adultery Get Quicker Condemnation Than Any Other Sin?

The number one news story this week has been the affair by the South Carolina governor.

Why? Are we quicker to condemn adulterers than other sinners?

I think we are. Why? I suspect that most people in a committed relationship, particularly in a marriage, have high anxiety about adultery and other violations of sexual norms. Therefore, we’re quick to condemn those who do things that we would find devastating (or that we could easily do and devastate ourselves and others).

I’ve been listening to Dennis Prager’s radio show from yesterday. Here is how his website DennisPrager.com describes them:

Prager H1: Is there no moral conflict to publishing Gov. Sanford’s stolen private emails? Dennis is angered by the deflection of attention from the more important topics of the day: Iran, North Korea, Nationalizing Healthcare, and a 1000pg Cap and Trade Bill. Dennis talks about the terror in Teheran… Axis of Evil, does anyone remember that?! He is then joined by Debbie Lee of Move America Forward… to discuss their 2nd annual ‘Troop-A-Thon” www.troopathon.org Which will hurt America more: Gov. Sanford’s Affair or the publishing of his stolen emails? Farrah Fawcett dies at the age of 62 after a long battle with cancer.

Prager H3: Dennis poses the question: Why is adultery treated differently than other sins? Is adultery less forgivable by religious people, Christians in particular? Why are we quicker to judge the character of an individual for adultery than other sins? He discusses the topic with callers.

Luke says: I’m sympathetic to Prager’s point of view, but I am even more interested in why society reacts as it does. I think it is a self-protective mechanism. All societies have sexual norms and the violation of some of these norms tend to create a more visceral response than any other type of violation. That’s why a man or woman who catches his/her spouse having sex with someone else and then kills the spouse tends to get off with a much lighter sentence than other forms of murder. We instinctively understand that the violation of certain sexual taboos is something that many people kill over.

I can’t imagine that there is anyone who values his marriage who does not have anxiety over adultery. This anxiety accounts for society’s trigger-happy response to adulterers.

Michael Jackson Is Dead

In 2007,I interviewed true crime author Aphrodite Jones about Michael Jackson:

Luke: "Why is it important to present this other side to Michael Jackson?"

Aphrodite: "There is another side to him and the press is like a consortium that no one knows about. Once they make a decision, that’s it. In his case, they’ve made their decision. It’s like they’ve made a business of making fun of him and they don’t want to do anything else but that.

"I went to a bookstore looking for books on Michael Jackson and I only found two."

Luke: "Could you give me an insight into the other Michael Jackson?"

Aphrodite: "The other Michael Jackson doesn’t even know what is going on with his own finances. The other Michael Jackson is really a twelve year old living in a 43-year old’s body. That’s why he’s hanging around with twelve year olds.

"I have studied this guy. I have tapes that nobody has seen. I can’t release them because they belong to him.

"He’s sitting on a pillow. From the waist up, it’s a nice shirt. From the waist down, it’s pajama pants. He’s sitting with his make-up artist who’s doing his hair and he’s talking for hours on end. He lives in his own little dreamworld. He’s still this tormented soul. It’s like he lived and died at the age of twelve and he’s still alive."

Luke: "Is he a threat to children?"

Aphrodite: "No. He spent so many years trying to do good for children and to make it OK for him to spend time with children."

"He’s a case of arrested development. He’s like an elf."

Luke: "What’s with his sleepovers with boys? Are they sleeping in the same bed as him?"

Aphrodite: "Yes. That’s weird."

Luke: "Is that entirely non-sexual?"

Aphrodite: "So he claims."

Luke: "What’s your sense?"

Aphrodite: "In the Santa Maria case brought by Gavin Arvizo, the prosecution brought up every piece of dirty laundry they had, the end result was that this did not happen. He was set up to be taken down.

"He was helping that kid. He let the kid stay in his room from day one but the kid had cancer. He wasn’t sexually interested in that kid."

"The media is not going to want my Michael Jackson book because they get exposed. They didn’t tell the whole story when they reported the Jordy Chandler trial. None of us did. I was part of it. We only told the prosecution’s story. So that’s all the public knows."

"I don’t know what happened with Jordy Chandler."

Luke: "Why do you think the media so often acts as a pack? I think they are afraid to go out on their own and look ridiculous to their peers."

Aphrodite: "Let me give you an example. I was covering the BTK killer’s sentencing for Fox News. This man tormented people in Wichita for 30 years. I had an interview scheduled with the prosecutor. That morning one of the news trucks was leaving. I asked where they were going and I was told that a girl was eaten by a tiger. She was posing for a picture with a tiger and the tiger ate her.

"Next thing you know, the next news truck leaves. And so on. The next thing I know, I get the call from Fox New York that our truck is leaving. You don’t need to stay for the interview."

Luke: "Do you think true crime books feed an unhealthy appetite?"

Aphrodite: "I hope not but I know that some of them do."

Luke: "I know people who say that they love to read books on serial killers."

Aphrodite: "I hope not. I don’t write about serial killers. I had that opportunity when I covered BTK and I chose not to because it was too disturbing to me. I find it dark and detrimental to the human spirit. But when it’s a case of a crime of passion or of domestic violence, when there’s a societal issue behind it that we can learn from, a hate crime, things that I’ve delved into, a societal issue that is more important than the crime. Always. That’s where I’m coming from and that’s what I hope to reveal to the reader. What they take from it is out of my control. I hope that I’m not fueling anything demonic out there."

Identity Theft & Illegal Employment

From CIS.org:

WASHINGTON (JUNE 25, 2009) – In May of this year, a Supreme Court decision severely impeded the use of identity theft charges as an immigration enforcement tool. In June, several people were arrested after a fraud scheme was uncovered at a Florida driver’s license bureau. In July, a new Utah law targeting illegal aliens and document fraud will take effect. As these examples show, illegal immigration is inherently tied to document fraud and identity theft. As states continue to search for answers, it is apparent that the Federal government has not yet found a working legislative solution to deter these crimes.

A new Backgrounder by the Center for Immigration Studies considers how illegal aliens perpetrate document fraud and identity theft, the effects on the victims of this crime, as well as some proposals to deter it. “Illegal, but Not Undocumented: Identity Theft, Document Fraud and Illegal Employment,” is written by Ronald Mortensen, PhD, a retired career U.S. Foreign Service Officer and former Society for Human Resource Management senior executive. The Backgrounder is available online at: http://www.cis.org/identitytheft.

The findings include:

  • Illegal immigrants are not “undocumented.” They have fraudulent documents such as counterfeit Social Security cards, forged drivers licenses, fake “green cards,” and phony birth certificates. Experts suggest that approximately 75 percent of working-age illegal aliens use fraudulent Social Security cards to obtain employment.

  • Most (98 percent) Social Security number (SSN) thieves use their own names with stolen numbers. The federal E-Verify program, now mandated in only 14 states, can detect this fraud. Universal, mandatory use of E-Verify would curb this and stop virtually 100 percent of child identity theft.

  • Illegal immigration and high levels of identity theft go hand-in-hand. States with the most illegal immigration also have high levels of job-related identity theft. In Arizona, 33 percent or all identity theft is job-related (as opposed to identity theft motivated simply by profit). In Texas it is 27 percent; in New Mexico, 23 percent; in Colorado, 22 percent; California, 20 percent; and in Nevada, 16 percent. Eight of the 10 states with the highest percentage of illegal aliens in their total population are among the top 10 states in identity theft (Arizona, California, Florida, Texas, Nevada, New York, Georgia, and Colorado).

  • Children are prime targets. In Arizona, it is estimated that over one million children are victims of identity theft. In Utah, 1,626 companies were found to be paying wages to the SSNs of children on public assistance under the age of 13. These individuals suffer very real and very serious consequences in their lives.

  • Illegal aliens commit felonies in order to get jobs. Illegal aliens, who use fraudulent documents, perjure themselves on I-9 forms, and commit identity theft in order to get jobs are committing serious offenses and are not “law abiding.”

  • Illegally employed aliens send billions of dollars annually to their home countries, rather than spending it in the United States and helping stimulate the American economy. In October 2008 alone, $2.4 billion was transferred to Mexico.

  • Tolerance of corruption erodes the rule of law. Corruption is a serious problem in most illegal aliens’ home countries. Allowing it to flourish here paves the way for additional criminal activity and increased corruption throughout society.

  • Leaders support perpetrators and ignore victims. Political, civic, religious, business, education, and media leaders blame Americans for “forcing” illegal aliens to commit document fraud and identity theft. No similar concern is expressed for the American men, women, and children whose lives are destroyed in the process.

  • The Social Security Administration and Internal Revenue Service facilitate illegal immigrant-driven identity theft. Both turn a blind eye to massive SSN fraud and take no action to stop it. The Social Security Administration assigns SSNs to new-born infants that are being used illegally. The IRS demands that victims pay taxes on wages earned by illegal aliens using their stolen SSNs, while taking no action to stop the identity theft.

  • State and local governments need to adopt tougher laws to supplement federal efforts. The Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is targeting large document fraud rings and the most egregious employers, but their resources are limited and stretched across multiple priorities. In 2007, identity theft cases represented only 7 percent of the total ICE case load.

  • Employers must do their part. They can ensure that they have a legal workforce by using a combination of the federal government’s E-Verify and Social Security Number Verification Service systems and by signing up for the federal government’s IMAGE program or privately conducted audits.

Dennis Prager: ‘Maybe I Should Run For President’

That was Dennis Prager’s reaction to Governor Sanford’s confession of an affair.

"I’m only half kidding," said Dennis. "While the Democrats are transforming America, Republicans are engaging in these libidinious explorations."

"These things are a disaster."

Prager notes that Obama says we can’t afford Medicare and Medicaid but supposedly we can afford for the government to take over all our healthcare?

RebMoshe.com!

In heretofore secret documents now finally unveiled by the Leader, Reb Moshe lays out his plans for his very own website (grammatical and spelling mistakes are in the original):

Through the gift of ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit), HaShem showed me the internet many years before its invention. While HaShem never allowed me into this promised land, I’m leaving behind the type of website that will serve as a source of inspiration for generations to come.

Welcome to RebMoshe.com!

Thank you for visiting my website. A very successful, New York-based decider of Jewish law, Reb Moshe has personally struggled through difficult economic, spiritual and political downturns in the past, and now wishes to help eliminate the problems that all Americans are experiencing presently. Reb Moshe has a number of intriguing ideas that he believes — if implemented — would help bring America back to its standard as the greatest country on the planet. He also wants to work to prevent future economic downturns, and help completely eliminate America’s entire national debt, so that we do not pass it down to future generations. This website will regularly update Reb Moshe’s proposals for the nation, and will also include U.S. Government and Media responses to his thought-provoking and, some might say, radical, ideas.

Who is Reb Moshe?

Reb Moshe is the number one posek in the world.

The purpose of this website is to share the teachings of Reb Moshe. Reb Moshe has been a beloved and sometimes controversial spiritual teacher on the cutting edge for many years.

He has inspired many, comforted the afflicted, and afflicted the comfortable. He reflects back to people their most gorgeous selves, shares teachings of love, pricks egos, and calls others, by his very being, to truth and integrity. For some Reb Moshe is a teacher, for others a spiritual friend, for still others a spiritual artist, and for still others a revolutionary catalyst of social change and evolution.

In the words of one leading American spiritual teacher and second wave feminist, “Reb Moshe combines radical brilliance with a willingness to be vulnerable, and radical kindness with an ability to probe deeply into texts?liberating the light and challenging the shadows of the human heart.”

In his self-description, published several years ago in both his Hebrew and English books, Reb Moshe writes, “I, like every person, am a flawed yet ever evolving human being. I seek purification and healing, even as I delight in realization. I am a passionate lover of God, of people, of wisdom, and of all being. I am called to realize and help others to realize our potential for being the most gorgeous and unique manifestations of the divine, which is our true nature.” At this stage in his evolution, Reb Moshe seeks to merge the artistic sharing of wisdom with direct social action.

The purpose of all of Reb Moshe’s creative endeavors and teachings is two-fold:

  • To help individuals live better lives
  • To contribute to the spiritual and ethical evolution of reality as we know it

Reb Moshe is one of the most sought-after speaker in the Jewish world. He regularly answers questions from people in the UK, United States, South Africa, South America and Australia.

Reb Moshe is a regular on the Howard Stern show and is one of Richard Nixon’s five spiritual advisors.

Rebbenzen Tzipproh Heller says: "Listen to Reb Moshe speak is fun. The demarcation between one of his lectures and entertainment is that it is impossible for his words to force all but the most unwilling listener to thinking deeply."

Rabbi Berl Wein says: "Reb Moshe is an outstanding, provocative, informative and entertaining speaker. He always has something to say and says it well. He is a fascinating person with a sense of humor and a gift for reachings peoples minds and souls."

In his spare time, Reb Moshe is the rosh yeshiva of Mesivta Tifereth Jerusalem. Reb Moshe says: "We’re the 15th best yeshiva in the United States, so we try harder! We’re not arrogant like those bochers in Lakewood!"

Reb Moshe enjoys studying Torah and playing ping-pong with the teens in his yeshiva, dancing the hora with the pre-schoolers at their Shabbat program, joining with the Yankee fans during their hakafah on Simhat Torah and, most of all, spending time with his wife and kids.

I Was A Talmid Of The Rav!

Only now can the truth be told!

I know every rabbi claims to have been a talmid of the Rav, but I really was. I studded under the Rav for three years when he was still teaching in Yiddish.

The Rav never felt secure in English. He was a broken man by the time he started teaching in English so those other rabbis, the Steven Weils of the world, who claim to be talmidim of the Rav, well, they’re pretenders.

I’m the real deal.

The Rav always loved me best. Every time he saw me, he got a twinkle in his eye and he asked me, "Who are you fighting with now?"

By contrast, the Rav never liked these other rabbis. I remember once one asked him a question about Aristotle, and the Rav drew himself up to his full height and said, "Come back to me when you’ve learned to read Aristotle in the original."

Whew! What a put down!

I loved the Rav because he made you feel like you were part of the elect. That you were modern and Orthodox. The way he did it was so neat. He completely ignored all the challenges to Orthodox Judaism posed by modernity, but instead immersed us in the Brisker Method of studying Talmud, which felt very modern but really was just a fancy intellectual exercise that absented one from real life and the real challenges posed by Biblical criticism, archeology, etc.

God, we felt so smug! I loved it.

The Rav told us that everyone else was only kissing Torah through a veil, but we were doing it not only smack on the lips, we were actually French-kissing the Torah thanks to the technique of his grandfather Chaim. Bliss was it in that dawn to be alive, but to be young and Brisking was very heaven!

The only way I can make it with my woman — when forced to by the Torah on Friday nights — is to imagine I’m locked in a musty YU Beit Midrash with just the Rav and 68 folio volumes of Gemara exploring the mouth of God.

Yum!

I’ll never forget my final conversation with the Rav. He was on his death bed and he turned to me and said, "I can die happy knowing that you’ll be around to carry on the work."

I know a recent book came out quoting private conversations of the Rav. Supposedly JB said this about me: “He was neither a pupil nor a friend. I think I appealed to something good in him at some point, and I hope I did. But I don’t know.“

An authorized biography of the Rav claims he ejected me from the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary for “deceit and deception."

And yet another rabbi claims: “He was one of the Torah weirdos. You get all sorts of people showing up in shul and we bust them. ‘I’m happy you’re looking for a place to daven. But this isn’t one of them.‘ And you throw them out."

I won’t dignify these put-downs with a response.

Suffice to say, the Rav and I knew what we had between us. And his work continues on this here website.

Thank you and God bless America!

Vote Republican!

Between the Yeshiva World and Modern Orthodoxy: The Life and Works of Rabbi Jehiel Jacob Weinberg, 1884-1966

I’m listening to Professor Marc B. Shapiro‘s lecture on the Srida Aish (Rabbi Jehiel Jacob Weinberg) for Torah in Motion (Movers and Shakers of Modern Orthodoxy 2).

Marc says that if World War II ended in 1942, instead of talking about the Holocaust, we’d be talking about the three million Soviet POWs who were murdered by the Nazis.

The Nazis kept many important Jews alive, including the former French prime minister Leon Blum. Rabbi Weinberg was kept at a prison camp along with elite Soviet military leaders who were captured when they were on German soil when Germany invaded the Soviet Union by surprise in 1941.

After he was kept alive by the Nazis in WWII, Rabbi Jehiel Jacob Weinberg had to decide where he wanted to live. Although there were a lot of tentative invites from the United States, there were no firm invites from established Orthodox institutions. Why not? Because of ego.

Rav Soloveitchik did not want Rabbi Jehiel Jacob Weinberg at Yeshiva University because of ego. Rav Soloveitchik wanted to be the man at YU. That was vitally important to the Rav. He needed to feel like the most important man there and if Rabbi Jehiel Jacob Weinberg came, the Rav would be number two.

The Rav sent a letter to Rabbi Jehiel Jacob Weinberg, saying if you want to come, we’ll find something for you, Rabbi Jehiel Jacob Weinberg was able to read between the lines that the Rav did not want him to come to YU.

Saul Lieberman did not want Rabbi Jehiel Jacob Weinberg to come to the Jewish Theological Seminary because Saul Lieberman wanted to be the man at JTS.

The same held for other American institutions of Jewish learning.

On the other hand, Rabbi Jehiel Jacob Weinberg did not want to come to any institution where he would be number two. It was important to Rabbi Jehiel Jacob Weinberg that he be the man.

So Rabbi Jehiel Jacob Weinberg went to live in Montreux, Switzerland, a town with about 20 Orthodox families. Rabbi Jehiel Jacob Weinberg was the man in Montreux.

"I don’t chase after kavod (honor)," Rabbi Jehiel Jacob Weinberg said to a friend, "but if it is put on my plate, I take it."
