‘If You Really Want To Do Kindness, You Should Sleep With Me’

I’m getting ready for the Days of Awe by listening to Torah talks by Rabbi Ari Kahn.

Here’s a groovy lecture on the evolving shofar.

Rabbi Kahn: "Kindness is something we need to be careful about."

"We’re told that Avraham’s son Ishmael represented a fake kind of chesed (kindness). He tried to pass himself as the true son of Avraham but chazal (rabbis of the Talmud) tell us that Ishmael would go around and try to pick up women.

"The verse says he was full of laughter. The implication of laughter in the text is one of sexual impropriety, according to chazal.

"Ishmael would use his father’s wonderful teachings of chesed as a pick-up line. He’d go around to women and say, ‘Didn’t Avraham teach us about the wonders of chesed? Well, if you really want to do chesed, you should sleep with me.’

"We believe in love your neighbor as yourself. We don’t believe in loving your neighbor’s spouse as yourself."

Would You Like To Shake My Lulav?

When I came to Los Angeles in 1994, I was hosted several times for Shabbat and holiday meals by a nice Orthodox family in Pico-Robertson.

Then, due to the raunchy nature of my blogging, the invites ceased.

In the summer of 2001, the Jewish Journal had Sheldon Teitelbaum write a cover story on me. He read it to this woman who freaked out and called me and asked, "Do you want to commit suicide?"

She suggested that I offer the Journal $10,000 not to publish the piece.

Well, I did not try to stop the piece (it was never published, in 2007, Brad Greenberg wrote this profile of me for the Jewish Journal), but I was shaken up by her call, and two days later I decided to sell my website lukeford.com and resolved to lead an honorable life.

A couple of months later, the family had me over for Succoth (and this woman set me up for another holiday meal with another family).

It was my first time at their home in more than three years.

It felt great to be back in their good graces.

That night, there were several single women in the Succah. One was a fresh-faced innocent looking blonde who was becoming interested in Judaism. She was seated right next to me.

She said she worked at a hospital. I think she was a doctor.

I know she could’ve healed me.

Over dinner, we talked about the lulav and etrog. She said she had never performed this mitzvah.

Like a good Jew, I leaned over to her and — I don’t care what anybody says, I did not put my hand on her knee — said, "Would you like to shake my lulav?"

"Oh, I can’t believe you said that," she replied.

I think she complained to the host who promptly wrote me out of her life.

I would keep passing them on the mean streets of Pico-Robertson but we simply exchanged cursory greetings. Still, it hurt to see their pain, disappointment and disgust.

A few years later, the host died.

I never saw the blonde again.

Lustful Thoughts Are A Sin

I got some very bad news this afternoon.

I was lying on my bed of nails listening to Torah talks by Rabbi Ari Kahn.

In his second lecture on Rosh Hashanah, he says that lustful thoughts are a sin. Most other thoughts about doing a sin are not a sin, only the deed, but when it comes to dreaming of immoral deeds of an explicitly sexual nature, the thought itself is a sin.

Oy vey! I am sunk in iniquity. All I do all day long is think lustful thoughts.

Rabbi Kahn cited a verse from Job, "I have made a covenant with my eyes, how can I look upon a maid?"

Sheesh, I might as well be a Christian. Jesus said that if you look with lust upon a woman (even your own wife according to the last pope), you have committed adultery with your heart. Dennis Prager often says that Judaism holds that you can commit adultery with only one organ of your body and it’s not your heart.

I’ve never heard Dennis Prager say that Judaism considers lustful thoughts a sin.

Oy, Dennis sold me a bill of goods. I thought I had a lot more room for my fantasy life if I converted to Judaism.

David Deida is my new hero. He says you can overcome your desire for various women by connecting to your deepest purpose — the primary reason for your life — and then using the inspiring women that you come across in daily life as impetuses for living your deepest purpose (without schtupping them).

I’m totally gonna try that.

"Feel what you want to give most as a gift, to your woman and to the world, and do what you can to give it today. Every moment waited is a moment wasted, and each wasted moment degrades your clarity of purpose."

From The Way of the Superior Man, a book by David Deida

“The Way of the Superior Man lays out a challenge before all men to fulfill their true purpose and to be authentically masculine. It will guide you on your journey to a successful and spiritually complete way of life. I invite you to live in the moment, to love openly, and to step up to the plate with this book in your hand.” –TONY ROBBINS Author of Awaken the Giant Within and Unlimited Power

Never Let A Crackhead Sing At Your Funeral

Respect!

Hot Shiksa calls.

I squeal: "You poked me on Facebook! This is a whole new direction for our relationship. We’re finally making our feelings concrete. It’s not just words. Now it’s down to poking. We’re making things holy."

Hot Shiksa: "I logged in to Facebook in a different way and saw that you had poked me. So I poked back.

"They don’t have pokes on the iPhone.

"Hey, if you’re going to write about me on your site, please do me the respect of capitalizing my name — Hot Shiksa.

"If I let you poke me for real, you’d be overcome by guilt. That’s why I don’t want to have sex with you. What happened to chivalry? All these guys in my life want to have sex with me. It’s so boring."

"How many guys is that?"

"How many girls do you want to sleep with? Twenty? —–"

"You think I want to poke ——?"

"Yes. And half the girls in yoga."

"I’m not like that. Yoga is sacred space for me. It’s not pick-up territory. I’m 43. I’m not looking to hook up. I’m looking to get married and to have kids and to live out a relationship sanctified by God and state. I want a wife so I can perform more mitzvahs.

"Do you seriously think I’d treat you with more respect if you were Jewish?"

"Yes."

"You’re wrong. You’re paranoid."

"And if I were ten years younger."

"That’s a low blow. There’s so much wisdom that a woman gains as she grows older and gets more wrinkles and packs on the weight and loses her desire to have sex. It’s a beautiful thing. It’s more spiritual than all the tawdry poking that the young are obsessed with. You’ve helped me overcome all my lustful desires. Now I just want to live in peace with God."

Girls Don’t Dig Sarcasm

I was being sarcastic about gays today to this hot shiksa and she warned me that if I didn’t cut it out, I would "lose my conversation privileges."

Dinner With My Best Friend From High School

Shannon shows up at 8:20 pm, twenty minutes late.

I met him in the fall of 1982. We lived a mile from each other, a mile outside of Auburn, CA.

I used to get rides to school with him. Shannon ran with the cool kids and I ran with Shannon.

He got married in 1986.

He’s with his wife Tammy tonight.

I haven’t seen them since 1991.

I last talked to Shannon in July of last year. He’s a prosecutor in Casa Grande, Arizona and his first name is now Rockne. (His brother Shawn, one year older, operates ExtraMileAmerica.com.)

In high school, Shannon was 6’3 and I was barely 6′. Now I’m over 6’1 and just an inch or so shorter than him.

"Hey, hey, hey, what’s up?" I say.

We shake hands. Shannon hugs me.

"Look at you buddy," he says.

I shake hands with Tammy and then we hug.

"How are you doing, man?" Shannon says.

"Good. How are you?"

"I could tell by his walk," says Shannon.

"What happened? You’re so tall," says Tammy.

"Yeah," I say. "I’ve been studying Alexander Technique.

"What’s the difference between us?"

Shannon and I line up.

"A couple of inches," says Tammy.

"It used to be four inches," I say.

"That’s amazing," says Shannon.

"Let me show you," I say.

"Are you going to crack my neck?" asks Shannon.

"No, it’s very gentle," I say. "You tend to slump and tip your head back."

We walk towards Pico Blvd.

"You always were 20 minutes late," I say.

"No," he says. "We hit all red lights."

"I’ve lived in this neighborhood for 12 years," I say. "I live in just enough space to park a car."

Shannon and Tammy note I have a lot of hair.

"I’m cutting it myself these days, trying to save money," I say. "I’ve always loved the mullet. I love 80s music and I love the mullet.

"You were into politics. You wanted to run for political office."

"That’s before I learned how abrupt it is," says Shannon.

"I Googled your name a lot over the years. I found this prosecutor in Washington State. That was you."

Shannon graduated from Gonzaga Law School in Spokane, Washington.

We eat dinner at Haifa restaurant. It’s their first time in a kosher restaurant. They get the chicken shish kabob and side orders of Israeli salad and vegetables. I get the falafal pita sandwich.

"You seem really happy," says Shannon. "You’re always smiling."

"You seem very peaceful," says Tammy.

"I went to yoga twice today," I say.

Tammy and Shannon do yoga regularly too. They have a DVD they work out to.

They order Diet Cokes. I order water.

I talk about the past year. My misadventures with women.

"I was with a girl. She was bi. She cheated on me with another woman. I didn’t think it would bother me and then I found out and I felt sick."

"In high school, we would’ve thought that was schwang," says….

"It’s not just the sex," I say. "It’s the things they talked about afterwards. During and after sex, you’re very intimate. You let down your guard and you speak from the heart. You’re willing to share everything. What was she talking about when she was hooking up with N.?

"I got off the phone pretty quick. I talked about it with my therapist. A couple of weeks later, I sent her an email saying I never wanted to talk to her again. I haven’t seen her or heard from her since."

After dinner (they pay!), we walk home past my yoga center and past the ashram.

"Are you ever going to settle down?" asks Tammy.

Connecting To God

I was just looking at a new book: "Jewish meditation practices for everyday life: awakening your heart, connecting with God"

What if these practices actually worked and you did connect to God? I can’t imagine it would be too pleasant. Sounds bloody terrifying to me. I think I’d prefer to stay disconnected, thank you very much.

If I ever attain the qualities I pray for — fear of God, love of God, humility, love of Torah, etc — I’d have to change my life.

Doesn’t sound too comfortable.

No, thank you. I’m really very happy as I am. Don’t want to change. Moderation in all things. That’s my motto.

Bob’s your uncle.
