Reform Responsa

Orthodox rabbi Gil Student writes:

When you think of Reform responsa, you automatically think of Reform Rabbi Solomon Freehof, who published some eight volumes of responsa (on Freehof, see the article in Wikipedia – link – and listen to the lecture by R. Adam Mintz – link). Now there is another name that will be added to the short list of Reform responsa authors. Baruch J. Cohon recently published his father Reform Rabbi Samuel S. Cohon’s rabbinic correspondence from 1917-1957 under the title Faithfully Yours, along with the son’s comments about the significance of various letters.

Cohon was a longtime professor of Jewish Theology at Hebrew Union College and taught generations of Reform Rabbis. When these rabbis went out into the field, they often contacted their professor with questions of both theology and practice. This was at a time when Reform Judaism was developing in America and Prof. Cohon played a significant role in the changes.

The book is fascinating for many reasons. For one thing, there are a large number of theological issues addressed, to rabbis, educators, laypeople and Christian clergy. Cohon responded, sometimes briefly but often with detailed citation of relevant passages in rabbinic and occasionally Christian literature (there is one letter where he corrects a minister’s understanding of the Christian Bible). Some questions are very complex and others are exceedingly simple. Sometimes people asked for Cohon’s opinion on curricula and other times about proofs for the existence of God (he accepts the argument from design). Surprisingly, the most frequent theological question he seems to address is that of the afterlife. Questioner after questioner asked about it. Cohon was a specialist in theology and was able to answer all of these questions expertly (although I found a scathing critique of one of Cohon’s theological works by Emil Fackenheim in a Sep. 1949 issue of Commentary magazine – link).

Firsty posts: Orthodox rabbis do the same thing. Everyone decides everything on the basis of his own personal judgment. The only diffrence is, orthodox rabbis feel the need to contrast, distinguish, and often ignore, sources that point to a diffrent conclusion than the one they want to get to. Reform rabbis simply dont bother to go through that exercise.

Judges do the same thing. They have an automatic preconceived notion of what the law should be, based on their political makeup, and then make the precedent fit the way they want it to fit.

There are exceptions, of course, and sometimes you will find someone saying it should be X, but the law is Y, and I’m stuck. But mostly people just make the law/halacha do what they want it to do. It’s just the way it is.

EFREX POSTS: Equally fascinating is a topic that R’ Mintz only briefly brings up in his lecture: the interdenominational "response committee" of CANRA (the Jewish Welfare Board’s organization to support chaplains in WWII) comprised of Rabbis Freehof, Milton Steinberg ("As a Driven Leaf"), and Leo Jung. To be a fly on the wall at those discussions…

Subprime Blogger Casey Serin Returns

From Wikipedia: Casey Konstantin Serin (born September 10, 1982) is a former real estate speculator and blogger. In a newspaper article, USA Today called him the "poster child for everything that went wrong in the real estate boom".[1] Born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, Serin immigrated to the United States in 1994. After graduating from high school, Serin bounced from job to job, generally working in website design. In his early twenties, however, Serin decided to quit working full-time in order to pursue house flipping as a means of generating income. Beginning in October 2005 and continuing through the following year, Serin purchased eight houses in four southwest U.S. states, and then began blogging about the foreclosure[2] process on the properties he was unable to resell. In time, five of the eight properties foreclosed.[3] The dubious nature of Serin’s real estate transactions, coupled with his subsequent blogging about the affair, have led to Serin’s name becoming strongly associated with the subprime mortgage crisis.

On 8/16/2009, Serin launched Island2012.com. The goal of Island2012.com is to get people to pay to join a community and advertise on that community under the promise of being allowed to live on an island that Serin intends to purchase.

From my live cam:

palestine4ever:  casey serin is back online
YourMoralLeader:  what is eye-patch underwear?
palestine4ever:  the guy is instant page views
YourMoralLeader:  awesome
palestine4ever:  island2012.com
palestine4ever:  his new scheme, to be shortlived no doubt, is to have people send him money to buy an island
palestine4ever:  his own brother started a blog to condemn him at steveserin.com
YourMoralLeader:  awesome
palestine4ever:  he’s desperate for media attention since he thinks it’ll somehow magically lead to profit
YourMoralLeader:  what is eye-patch underwear?
palestine4ever:  you got me
palestine4ever:  a g-string?
palestine4ever:  kinda looks like an eyepatch
palestine4ever:  but you know me, anything less than leggings and a onesy is obscene in the eyes of Allah
YourMoralLeader:  yes
palestine4ever:  casey serin, man
palestine4ever:  instant page views
palestine4ever:  declan mccullough from CNET/CBS is the only guy of your stature to ever really take him on
palestine4ever:  the trick is, he has this huge online community of people who hate his guts
palestine4ever:  they immediately flood the comments of anywhere that writes about him
palestine4ever:  because the guy is such a train wreck, it’s utterly fascinating to watch
YourMoralLeader:  but you said he reminds you of me?
palestine4ever:  haha, not quite
palestine4ever:  you actually work
palestine4ever:  but having luke and casey exist in the same plane of the universe is some kind of unholy magic
palestine4ever:  http://www.caseypedia.com/wiki/Main_Page
palestine4ever:  there’s an entire site dedicated to him

Steve Serin writes:

So in your opinion what real steps should be taken towards the long restoration road to Casey getting better?  Here are a few issues right off the bat.  No matter what you tell Casey, his automatic response every time is “Well… Im sorry you feel that way” Or “I value your opinion and will take it into consideration”  In other words, I really dont care what you have to say unless what you are saying is parallel with what I want to do.  See posting online is simple because he simply does not approve anything, but trying to talk to the guy in person is so frustrating you dont even know !

Oh and by the way, according to Casey he still does not have his money yet, therefor he has not spent it yet.

What Is Eye-Patch Underwear?

Apparently it helped cause the moral breakdown of a conservative Republican state assemblyman.

One source says: "It is underwear made from an eyepatch. It is typically worn with a parrot on the shoulder and a prosthetic leg."

Comte says: "I’m guessing it refers to mini thong-type panties that have about the same amount of coverage area as a typical pirate’s eye patch."

Feel free to discuss on my live cam.

Charles Dore: looks good on her, but looks better on YOU!

Minne posts: "Think of a patch of fabric, about 2" triangle, with three strings on it."

Whatever eye-patch underwear is, I think it’s disgusting and I hope the RCC bans it. There’s no place in Orthodox Judaism — or any God-fearing home — for eye-patch underwear.

Diogenes writes: "I think it’s underwear that is so tiny that you lift your eyepatch to stare at it with BOTH eyes."

Donald writes: "This is merely the logical result of years of unhealthy sexual self-repression, as aging, holier-than-thou Republicans hit mid-life and suddenly realize what they’ve been missing, tap into their inner teenaged slutpuppy, and seek to make up for lost time by humping anything that moves."

A source says: "A string bikini where there is only a little patch of fabric to cover up the actual lips of the…"

Family Values CA Assemblyman Resigns

From OC Weekly:

[Michael] Duvall, speaking to a relatively mum Republican colleague seated to his left, apparently had no idea his dais microphone became live beginning about a minute before the start of a cable-televised committee hearing. He was captured in the middle of recounting portions of an affair.?

"She wears little eye-patch underwear," said Duvall, who is married with two children. "So, the other day she came here with her underwear, Thursday. And? so, we had made love Wednesday–a lot! And so she’ll, she’s all, ‘I am going ?up and down the stairs, and you’re dripping out of me!’ So messy!"

…Duvall–who was twice a president of the Yorba Linda Chamber of Commerce, served two terms as mayor of Yorba Linda before entering the assembly in? 2006, and is the owner of an insurance agency–continues his tale: "So, I am getting into spanking her. Yeah, I like it. I like spanking her. She goes, ‘I know you like spanking me.’ I said, ‘Yeah! Because you’re such a bad girl!’"

He then laughed.?

The assemblyman representing Anaheim, Fullerton, Placentia, Orange, Brea, La? Habra and Yorba Linda then offered clues to the identity of his sex partner.?

"And so her birthday was Monday," he said at the Wednesday, July 8 committee hearing. "I was 54 on June 14, so for a month, she was 19 years younger than ?me. I said, ‘Now, you’re getting old. I am going to have to trade you in.’ And she goes, ‘[I’m] 36.’ She is 18 years younger than me. And so I keep? teasing her, and she goes, ‘I know you French men. You divide your age by ?two and add seven, and if you’re older than that, you dump us.’"

According to voter-registration records reviewed by the Weekly, veteran Sacramento-based lobbyist Heidi DeJong Barsuglia turned 36 years old on Monday, July 6.

…"Their relationship is the worst-kept secret in Sacramento," a capitol staffer recently told me. "He’s old and fat. She’s hot, blonde and about 20? years younger. He could have never gotten a woman like that before he got? this job.’"

…But Duvall wasn’t content to just share one adulterous tale at the July 8 committee hearing. He referenced a second, simultaneous affair with another woman. He seemed amused that he was cheating on both his wife and a mistress.

"Oh, yeah, Sher, Shar, Shar," Duvall said. "Oh, she is hot! I talked to her yesterday. She goes, ‘So are we finished?’ I go, ‘No, we’re not finished.’ I go, ‘You know about the other one [Barsuglia], but she doesn’t know about you!’"

Luke says: I visited the state capitol in 1999 and 2000 to cover the Free Speech Coalition’s lobbying efforts. Yes, both days, I walked around with a bunch of porn stars as they energetically lobbied the body politic. Frankly, the secretaries and lobbyists and assorted hangers-on surrounding the politicians were often hotter than the porn stars. Only a strongly moral or timid man could stay faithful in that atmosphere. I think of myself as very moral, but even I got weak in the knees with all the knock-out secretaries with their sleek and sexy power outfits taking dictation and seeing to their bosses every need.

Oy, this whole story is so tawdry and shocking, I can barely bring myself to post about it. Think about some fat old conservative with two kids. He’s probably been married for more than 20 years. He gets to Sacramento. He’s an elected state Assemblyman and for the first time in his life he can achieve the "Ass" in Assemblyman. I bet in high school he wasn’t getting any. I doubt that his life insurance business was a hot way of meeting babes. Finally, he gets to live the dream. And just because he shared a few juicy details with a colleague, wham bam thank you mam, the poor bloke’s resigned, his political career over, and I can’t imagine his marriage is doing too well either.

Sheesh, throwing it all away for a few hours of wanton and irresponsible pleasure, the blissful friction that is not sanctified by God or state, the bountiful pressures released but not in a way that glorifies our humanity or our faith or our conservative politics. It’s just so sad. If only he had listened to some David Deida CDs and learned to use beautiful women only for inspiration for achieving your deepest purpose, and not for blowing off steam.

Oy, the humanity! This leaves me with so much to ponder before Rosh Hashanah. I can imagine that there could be certain situations where I would be vulnerable to these very sins.

I’m sure it gets very lonely in Sacramento. I lived in its vicinity from 1980 – 1988, and from 1990-1993. I got very lonely. There were times when I sought out solace in members of the opposite sex. When I was at my most desperate, I would not have minded if they were lobbyists with business before my committee. Frankly, I fear that I would have found that all the more enticing. So much of politics is accomplished behind closed doors. So much of life is accomplished behind closed doors.

Often one can feel like a fragmentary atom whirling through space and you just want to attach to another human being and leave a deep impression. It makes you feel young and alive. That you matter. That you are powerful. That you can overcome all the humiliation that life gives you by spanking some lobbyist. Yes, if I stretch my mind, I can understand the attraction.

If I really work hard, I can imagine some perky blonde lobbyist on my lap wearing eye-patch underwear and my right hand spanking her for her sins. After all, lobbyist is not a nice job. Lobbyists deserve a little punishment and humiliation.

Oy, but afterwards, I would feel so dirty and ashamed. I’d feel I had taken advantage of my position. And to think of all the people I had let down. How could I get up in shul on Shabbos and give a Torah derasha after spanking some young lobbyist?

I’ve never been a guy to spank girls. I’m pretty vanilla. I’m a simple man. I like to live my life by the precepts of the Talmud. I try to be shomer negiya. The prospect of sex outside of marriage just feels so fleeting and sinful to me. It just does not compare to the pleasure of being close to God.

I wonder what my yoga teacher would say about this? He gave a very moving 20-minute lecture last night about the joys of conscious living. I can hardly believe that tawdry spanking affairs with lobbyists constitute conscious living. I strongly doubt that Yogi Bhajan would approve of such behavior. I feel that yoga is a far healthier way of burning off lustful thoughts than spanking lobbyists. I feel very serene and peaceful when I am in yoga, sitting in the back, watching the rest of the class go into downward dog while I mutter to myself, ong namo guru dev namo. This is the peace that passeth understanding.

By contrast, think of the older man who is running around on his wife having tawdry sex with younger women. Think of the constant tension he must be under. Think of the skulking around. Think of the compressed liasons by the copy machine and in the car and the constant sex talk and the cooing in each other’s ear and the sharing of fantasies and dreams and your deepest emotions as you feel like you have finally found someone who accepts all of you. How does this frantic fornicating compare with the contentment that comes with spending seven hours in shul Rosh Hashanah morning?

When I have fantasies about spanking lobbyists with business before my committee, I like to lie down and listen to Torah lectures by Rabbi Ari Kahn until my lustful thoughts go away. Often it is eight hours or so before I get up and go on my way, purified by the wellsprings of wisdom.

Chaim emails: "Holy crap – so you mean I have to get myself into politics to get laid? And by the way, this story makes Eliot Spitzer seem even dumber than I had thought. What was he doing paying big bucks for hookers when it was there for the taking for free?"

I don’t feel comfortable discussing the details of this case on my blog or live cam. It’s a private matter.

Why Women Really Have Sex

This story rings true to me.

From the Daily Telegraph in Australia:

FOR every woman expecting the earth to move, there are two with more practical motives.

From relieving boredom, to keeping the peace or curing a headache, women have sex for many reasons but romance and passion come rather low on the list, a new book has revealed.

One woman even admitted to having sex just so her husband would put the rubbish out.

"Research has shown most men find most women at least somewhat sexually attractive, whereas most women do not find most men sexually attractive at all," Why Women Have Sex authors Cindy Meston and David Buss said.

Having apparently discounted physical attraction, the 1000 women interviewed by the Texas University professors gave a huge range of reasons for sleeping with a man.

One said she did it for a spiritual experience, proclaiming: "It’s the closest thing to God."

But mostly the explanations were far more mundane, with 84 per cent admitting to having sex just to ensure a quiet life or to bargain for household chores. One woman said: "I have sex to relieve the boredom because it’s easier than fighting. Plus it gives me something to do."

Are People Basically Good?

Dennis Prager:

On his radio show today, Dennis said: The founders of this country had a very skeptical view of human nature. They understood that people have selfish desires. That’s why they didn’t trust power. Liberals trust power because they trust people more than conservatives. Conservatives don’t believe people are basically good, liberals do.

That’s why this is not a democracy. It’s a republic. Only one branch of government (legislature) and only one half of that branch was decided by public vote.

The founders did not even trust the people. "Power to the people" is a leftist belief based on the belief that people are basically good and so you give them as much power as possible.

The general American belief has been that non-governmental bodies — generally religion — stop us from our worst behavior. That’s where we will keep a check on ourselves.

Sex In Jerusalem

"Nobody ***** in Jerusalem," says my friend Josh*. "They bring redemption.

"You’ve heard of Jerusalem Complex? People go to the Wall and they think they’re the Messiah? They go to Israel and they think they’re some Biblical character. Everything has such huge overtones when it is done in Jerusalem.

"There was this whole pick-up scene after davening on Friday night. People would hang out on the streets and then they’d go to Shabbat dinners and then they’d get carried away by the holiness of the Shabbat and they’d hook up. But they didn’t think of it sex. It was messianic. It was healing the shattered vessels. It was connection with cosmic consequences.

"There were all these American LUGs – Lesbian Until Graduation. A lot of them became Conservative rabbis.

"There was something in the air in Jerusalem. The holiness was tangible. A girl would be giving me a handjob and she’d start meditating. You don’t find that in Los Angeles.

"Things that seemed impossible anywhere else seemed possible in Jerusalem. You’d hook up with people, you’d marry people, you’d never do anywhere else because you got caught up in Jerusalem fever. It’s easy to destroy your life if you are not grounded."

"I used to hit the alternative scene in my kipa. And it was totally accepted because everyone in that world was tattooed and pierced. They accepted it as like a piercing. And I’d hook up with people while wearing my kipa. It wasn’t that I went down to "hook up", I was involved in the scene there so despite the kippa I had regular friends and even lovers despite the kippa. I was meaning something very benign, in most of those cases it was never intended to be sexual, just that it was welcoming there. "
