Danielle Berrin: Germany’s moral courage

Danielle Berrin writes:

While the rest of Europe fretted over what to do about a crisis that is being called “the largest wave of emigration since World War II,” Germany, led by its courageous and moral Chancellor Angela Merkel, signaled its willingness to heed the call of millions of desperate refugees, many of whom have been rendered stateless by the war in Syria and other Middle East crises.
While the United States has sat idly by, draped in its aggrandizing values of justice and liberty for all, its political passivity partly responsible for the refugee crisis to begin with, Germany steps forward with leadership and humanity.
While the Gulf States of Qatar, Kuwait, Saudia Arabia and the United Arab Emirates defend themselves against charges of apathy and indifference, Germany opens its arms. “You can’t welcome people who come from a different atmosphere, from a different place, who suffer from psychological problems, from trauma, and enter them into societies,” Kuwaiti commentator Fahad Al-Shelaimi, chairman of the Gulf Forum for Peace and Security, said last March during a televised address on France24’s Arabic channel.
The Gulf States – and the United States – have a few things in common: Both have opened their checkbooks (Saudi Arabia: $18.4 million; Kuwait: $304 million; U.S.: $1.1 billion), while refusing to open their borders. Instead Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan, whose per capita incomes are but a fraction of those in the Gulf States, have absorbed the largest number of refugees (Turkey: 2 million; Lebanon: 1.2 million; Jordan: 630,000). The U.S. has agreed to a paltry 1,500.
So far, only Germany, and her neighboring Austria, have risked their own stability and security to absorb these fleeing refugees, with Germany expecting to receive 800,000 this year alone.
The country’s compassion moved the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to praise Germany, Austria and “civil society” itself for their “remarkable” response to the crisis. “This is political leadership based on humanitarian values,” said a UNHCR statement issued on Sept. 5. Newsweek declared Germany’s Chancellor Merkel “Europe’s Conscience.”

The comments on the article are funny:

* The children of these “migrants” will not assimilate. They will become Islamist fanatics.

* And, payback for the 6 million Jews. Danielle, I suggest that your quote from our rosh hashana prayer, i.e. “haras” (ashkenazic pronunciation) which means “pregnant”, if spelled with a “samech”(last letter of the word) instead of a “tav” would mean “destruction”. It’s payback time.

* There are so many young men among the refugees. They should be organized into military units, trained and certainly in part commanded by western cadre to return home and fight for their country. Those who won’t take up arms in their own defense do not deserve sanctuary.

* Europe will rue the day that they allowed these Muslim savages into their country. Even now you don’t dare publish a cartoon of their precious Mohamed without an attempt on your life . You stupid fools; your not practicing humanity, your embracing cold hard suicide. Europeans will die from what you are doing today. Tomorrow SHARIA LAW!!!

JJ: Historian Timothy Snyder presents a provocative, new take on the Holocaust

Danielle Berrin conducts this interview:

Yale historian Timothy Snyder is among the world’s leading scholars of Eastern Europe. Educated at Oxford, he is the author of five award-winning books, including the acclaimed “Bloodlands: Europe Between Hitler and Stalin,” about Nazi and Soviet mass killings in the 20th century. The book received the Leipzig Prize for European Understanding, the Ralph Waldo Emerson Award in the Humanities and has been translated into more than 20 languages. Snyder’s latest work, “Black Earth: The Holocaust as History and Warning,” explores the events, ideology and political machinery that made mass extermination possible.

DB: What has the world most misunderstood or not understood well enough about Hitler and his thinking?

TS: Hitler’s anti-Semitism is not really about Jews so much as it is about making sense of the world. So when we say that he’s an anti-Semite, that’s true, of course, but in some sense it’s not sufficient. He placed the responsibility on the Jews for all ideas of ethics, all ideas of science, anything that got in the way of making the world the bloody, competitive place that he thought it always was and should be in the future. His anti-Semitism is the matter of a complete worldview; he sees the world as a terrain with finite resources and life as a bloody, racial competition for those resources. He was a kind of anarchic thinker; he wasn’t concerned with making the German state big, strong, precise, bureaucratic and administrative — all these stereotypes we have in our heads — his view is that the state is secondary; the race is what matters.

DB: How was Hitler able to sell this primitive race ideology — that basically ascribed all of humanity to a dog-eat-dog competition for resources — to a modern, civilized nation such as Germany? Was it his political genius or a more deeply rooted malaise in German society?

TS: Hitler was a very gifted politician. He was good at not revealing the extremity of his views when it wasn’t necessary to do so; it’s all there in the book [“Mein Kampf”], but in his public speeches, he would often be much less radical. Part of his idea is that German patriotism is a force that one has to manipulate in order to [compel] the Germans into the racial war. The second thing is, although Germany in the 1930s was a modern society, there was a very real and legitimate concern about food supplies. The country had been blockaded during the first world war, suffered during the Great Depression and was dependent upon international freight and food. [So] it’s a scenario where a functioning state has a population which is used to a certain standard of living and which is afraid of losing it.

DB: You claim that the breakdown of states and institutions is what, on a practical level, enabled the mass extermination of Jews. Does that mean part of the answer is to shore up the nation-state system? Because in many parts of the world today, the nation-state is under attack.

TS: If we look at it statistically, we see that in places where the state was destroyed, Jews had a 1 in 20 chance of surviving. In places where the state wasn’t destroyed, it was about 1 in 2. Whenever you wipe out states, it is always ethnic minorities who end up getting treated the worst. I come to the conclusion that it’s important that states — even imperfect states — stand, because the process of destruction is harmful for everyone, but especially for minorities.

DB: Any thoughts on why Jews, in particular, are subjected to history’s hatreds and persecutions repeatedly?

TS: The Jewish international conspiracy, although it is ridiculous as a factual matter, is a way of making a globalized world make sense. You have to think in planetary terms. Hitler’s anti-Semitism is not so much about the Jews in Germany, because there aren’t that many Jews in Germany — and they’re basically all assimilated — it’s about turning these individuals into a symbol of a world plot that one has to fight against. And that is characteristic of certain moments in world history.

DB: The Soviet Union plays an ambivalent role in the book. On the one hand, you write that the USSR “taught” the Nazis a lot about mass murder. But, on the other hand, the Red Army ultimately did more than any other force to stop them. How should we understand its role?

TS: …Before the war, the Soviets had a policy of eliminating anti-Semitism and all other forms of ethnic discrimination. [But] when Germany actually invades the Soviet Union, it turns out that Soviet citizens are willing to collaborate in large enough numbers that the Holocaust can take place as a major shooting campaign [there]. Then it turns out that the major force resisting Hitler is the Red Army, and that [it] actually wins the war in large measure. It’s complicated.

….One thing that I would like to get across is that even the most horrible events do have explanations that we can understand. And it’s not always comfortable for us to understand, because in order to understand, we have to see how we’re not so far away from the people in question. For me, it’s very important that we have a sense in human history how these things arise, because without that sense, we’re going to be vulnerable in the future.

…What the 1930s show is that a developed, competent, modern, educated society can get into a situation where worries about standards of living can justify horrifying bloodshed. And we are now drifting toward a world where that kind of thing can very well become likely again, as [we see] poor societies becoming richer societies. The second trend is the state. Everyone seems to take the state for granted. In 2003, we casually did away with the Iraqi state, without really having anything to replace it with, and look how wonderful things are now. And Russia is nihilistically casual with the Ukrainian state, thinking it’s not really a real place. And if you look at our political dialogue in the U.S., there isn’t very much respect for the state either. And [all this] worries me. There is an atmosphere of dread, wherever you go almost — whether it’s Beijing or Tokyo or Kiev or Moscow or Berlin — there is this sense that things are making a turn in the wrong direction.

The Myth Of Black Criminality?

Comments to Steve Sailer:

* West Virginia is the 2nd poorest state in the nation by median income. It ranks 32nd in homicide rate (i.e. only 18 states are safer). It’s homicide rate of 3.0 per 100,000 is only barely above that of Norway (2.2). 3.5% of West Virginia’s population is black.

Maryland is the richest state in the nation by median income. It has the 3rd highest murder rate in the nation. It’s homicide rate of 7.3 per 100,000 ranks it alongside countries like Pakistan (7.7) and Chad (7.3). Maryland has 3rd highest percentage of blacks in the nation at 29.4%.

* I wish White privilege really did exist in real life. I am talking about the kind of White privilege seen in the SNL parody video featuring Eddie Murphy in White face. I wish random White people on the streets and in banks would just come up to me to hand me free money and free stuff in general simply because we are of the same race. I wish random attractive White women on public buses would sit on my lap and flirt with me simply because I am White.

* Attacking TNC is like picking on a special needs kid. The real question is why did the Atlantic hire him and why do white Liberals love him so much. From a conservative perspective, his dumbness is actually useful. In fact, a bunch of racist liberals – resentful that they had to give a job to a affirmative action black – couldn’t have picked a worse black spokesman.

* Frankly, I don’t care very much about what the “premiere” American intellectual Ta-Nehisi Coates thinks about anything. Everyone knows he is a joke.

I do care very much what Jeffrey Goldberg and Yoni Appelbaum who “oversee” TNC think. Jeffrey and Yoni are extremely intelligent and have incredible political influence. TNC is just a sock puppet that will be tossed to the side once he utters the word “Palestine” in the presence of his financial benefactors.

Germany Abolishes Itself

Comments to Steve Sailer:

* “Syria’s richer Gulf neighbours have been accused of not doing their fair share in the humanitarian crisis, with Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman and the UAE also keeping their doors firmly shut to asylum-seekers.”

Gulf Arabs are a lot more street smart and have a lot more common sense than Northwest Europeans. Northwest Europeans like the Swedes and the Germans have about as much street smarts as a SWPL person who goes midnight jogging in the streets of Detroit.

Swedes and Germans live in such sheltered little worlds. But their utopia is going to come crashing down hard. They have no clue what they have gotten themselves into.

* How abundantly clear do the Arabs have to be? If it isn’t obvious to our elites by now that they are being had, then a) they are too stupid to be in control, or b) they really are hostile and intend to destroy us. In either case they must go, and people truly concerned about Western Civilization need to be running the show.

* Germany voted for Merkel, but they didn’t vote at all for mass immigration. Much of regular countryside Germans are absolutely horrified.

Those that resist this are being demonized.

England clearly voted against mass non-white immigration. The ethnic French and Italians are too. Many Europeans are horrified. Hungary is obviously doing what they can to resist. Their avenues of resisted are being fought and limited.

In the 20th century, US whites voted passionately for “school choice” which meant voluntary segregation and other segregation measures. The popular vote was overturned on constitutional grounds. Those that didn’t smile widely enough were vilified.

* Well, at least Germany will be culturally enriched with radical and fundamentalist Wahabism! Perhaps, Merkel should import some radical Shiites to further the enrichment!

* Mosques built overseas by the Saudis serve as Wahabi magnets, drawing Muslims to their version of Islamic fundamentalism through the obligation of gratitude to their benefactors. There might appear to be no strings attached, but psychological and cultural strings there are, nevertheless.

Many mosques in the U.S. built for black muslims breaking with the Nation of Islam were built by the Saudis, or so I have heard. Given that the Saudis have been among those financing the ISIS mess in Syria, which has led to many of the ‘refugees’ swarming to Europe, offering to fund mosques in Europe is the second part of the one-two punch.

I’d suggest that Germany turn down the offer of Saudi-built mosques. Let the migrants raise funds to build their own, if they wants mosques. In Islam, there is nothing wrong with saying one’s prayers at home. Mosques tend to serve as centers for extremist Imams to preach extremism to the faithful in languages that the host countries can’t understand. Not ideal.

* Can we sign you and your family up to host five or ten enterprising young arab men who think that you are a pig and that your wife and daughters are whores? I knew we could count on you.

* Is Islam really and truly worse than the new secular religion of ‘egalitarianism’ ie all that stinky identity politics, feminista tyranny, black grievance domination, LBGT histrionics, AA, New Labour, the Democrat Party, immigrationism, open borders etc etc, that seems to be the dominant cult in the modern west, and which is being pushed by some very aggressive American forces?

At least Islam is a manly religion.

* I admire the Saudis for this. They aren’t confused about whether they are on their own side or not.

* I don’t know the situation in Germany, but in the US both parties for quite some time have not given us a true choice on immigration. They either ignore the issue or push amnesty, expanded work visas, etc. There is never discussion about going back to something like the immigration levels of 1924. There is never discussion about whether demographic change is anything except an unqualified good.

Granted there has been a Pat Buchanan or Tom Tancredo here or there. But they didn’t have the financial backing to weather the storm of media attacks that were frequently coordinated by party elders. And they were easily branded as crackpots because the narrative was arrayed against them, and the average Joe on the street got all their information about them through the media’s lens.

But now with Trump, assuming he doesn’t pull a Ross Perot, Americans have a chance to show that reducing immigration is an important issue to them. Since Trump is rich, he needs no financial backing. Since Trump is famous, the media can’t create a negative narrative on him because his skeletons have already been emptied from the closet. Despite the rest of the GOP wanting to ignore immigration or push amnesty, Trump has shown already that the GOP base is interested in slowing it down. I hope he stays in long enough for the lion’s share of this nation, not just the GOP base, to express this view too.

Steve Sailer: How’d the Last German Experiment with Importing Muslim Workers Turn Out?

Comments to Steve Sailer:

* Universities and open borders crowd argue that mass immigration is supposed to deliver an economic boon and reduce crime. But we often see the opposite. The open borders types don’t even believe they are telling the truth, they know they are being dishonest, they are just so committed to arguing and winning that the ends justify the means.

The immigrant banlieues in France are very high crime, poverty stricken, social service sponges. They were supposed to reduce crime and provide economic benefit and seem to do the exact opposite. Will the open borders crowd admit that this isn’t working.

US is supposed to be the success story of multi-racial integration, but it really doesn’t feel that way.

* It takes a lot of work to shift the zietgeist. The guys causing the problems love it when you can try something without the modern social mob at your back. You are isolated, ridiculed, and squashed like a grape. Obviously just another crazy fool. Nothing to see here.

An import part of the solution is to actually prove your case. To illustrate your point. To show, not tell. And not just once, but every time. Every time you hear some PC BS, call them on it. Show the whole story. Every time you see something idiotic, point it out. Dwell on it. Rub everyone’s collective faces in it. When they attempt to shout you down, just keep on doing it. Don’t even bother addressing them. Address the rest of the world. Every time one of their thought-leaders makes happy-happy silly-silly, remind everyone that there’s more to the world than the sound bite. Tell the back story. Yeah, a lot won’t get it. But some will. And all this build up over time. Especially today, when everything lives forever on computers.

Slow, steady, smooth. A lot of lies have to be killed first.

* Sailer is wildly entertaining, he’s anything but boring, he’s extremely insightful, he has built a devoted following, but he’s just a fringe writer. He doesn’t have any influence beyond that.

Your action ideas are agitate for policy.

My favorite action ideas:

– Humor and entertainment. No one listens to angry miserable people no matter how strong their logical arguments are. People listen to those that entertain.

– Genetics. Develop better understanding of human genetics and what traits/genes we want and which we don’t. We often think that politicians change the world, but often major structural social changes come from technology. Better human genetics understanding would help this crowd’s goals.

* I think you underestimate the hold that politically correct thinking and the religion of diversity has on the West. Many of the opinions expressed on iSteve are Orwellian Thoughtcrimes against the prevailing approved beliefs in the infinite malleability of all peoples, the notion that freedom requires absolute uniformity and the jest that nothing really important happened prior to today.

Steve and others provide a space where ideas that are considered perfectly reasonable in most of the world but are often considered literally unthinkable in the West can be raised. Liberalism’s quasi-religious death-grip (cf. James Burnham) cannot be shaken off until more people realize that its shibboleths are chimera. The first thing step towards release is to realize that liberal rule is neither inevitable nor normative.

* Before the events of this summer there were less than 1/10 as many Arabs in Germany compared to Turks. Yet in criminal gangs, street crime etc. there are more Arabs than Turks. Also the Hip Hop culture is dominated by Arabs, which shows that Arabs are seen as the toughest. Arabs are clearly the most problematic group in Germany. Now that Arabs rise from a tiny minority to a substantial fraction of the population funny times are coming

Steve Sailer: FBI: Top Ten Most Wanted of America’s White Collar Criminals Not Too White American

Comments to Steve Sailer:

* Immigrants are doing the white collar crimes that Americans are simply too lazy to do anymore. Even the Black guy on that list has a Nigerian or other West African sounding name and not a homegrown African American name like Jamal Andre Jackson.

* Russians have been slandered a long time by New York media especially. New York media are quick to point out the knavery of Russian immigrants when indicted for crime but stop short of noting that most Russian criminals are in fact Jewish.

* Violent criminals or white collar criminals? Because there is no way most violent Russian thugs are Jewish. Jews are not responsible for why Russia has the highest per capita murder rate in all of Europe. Russian Gentiles as a group have always been a very violent people. Also bat shit crazy Chechen Muslims help drive up the murder rate in Russia.

If Jews were the main ones responsible for violent street crimes in Russia, than Israel would have a similar per capita murder as Russia but they don’t. The per capita murder rate in Israel is way closer to Western European levels than they are to Slavic Russian levels.

Russian Gentiles are not as law abiding as Vermont and North Dakota Whites for example, that’s just a fact.

Counterpoint: U.S. is wrong place for Europe’s refugees

Roy Beck writes: The United States should not be resettling what would be only a tiny fraction of the current flow of refugees and migrants from the other side of the world. Instead, we should join other nations in providing for the greatest comfort to the greatest number of people fleeing their destabilized countries. By long experience, the United Nations has primarily recommended safe, internationally supervised camps in adjoining countries, or at least the same region, so refugees can eventually more easily move back home.

Offers of resettlement on other continents might at first seem the humanitarian response. But that can easily cause far more suffering, both to migrants themselves and to receiving communities which risk their own destabilization. The United States certainly should not add to the enticements for people to risk their lives and those of their children through dangerous travel to obtain what only a few can be offered.

Here at home, nearly 500,000 refugees have been placed into local American communities through federal resettlement programs since 2009. We have been taking about 70 percent of all the refugees resettled by the United Nations each year. There has been little to assure us that these programs are capable of screening out present and future criminals and terrorists who often exploit the chaos of emergency migrations. And the programs show little regard for the multiple long-term fiscal costs imposed on the local receiving communities that already are suffering from the same depressed wages and low labor force participation rates as the rest of the United States.

Rather than taking in a new wave of refugees, our government should be considering enacting the Resettlement Accountability National Security Act (H.R. 3314) introduced by U.S. Rep. Brian Babin (R-Texas). It would place an immediate suspension on the resettlement programs until the Government Accountability Office completes a thorough examination of the full costs on local, state and federal governments. And as Babin said introducing the bill last month, the suspension “gives an opportunity to examine potential national security issues related to entry and resettlement, particularly as federal law enforcement officials are increasingly concerned about home-grown terrorists.”

Mass Legal Immigration Will Finish Conservatism

Mark Krikorian writes: Conservative luminaries have been warning that Donald Trump poses a threat to the Republican party and to the political future of conservativism. Charles Krauthammer has called him “political poison.” Fred Barnes says Trump has “made the GOP’s future dicey.” George Will thunders characteristically that “every sulfurous belch from the molten interior of the volcanic Trump phenomenon injures the chances of a Republican presidency.”

All this may be true. Trump is indeed a braggart who goes out of his way to antagonize people — not a winning approach in electoral politics. And he’s shown little real commitment to conservative principles — or principles of any other kind, for that matter.

But Trump is not the long-term problem faced by the Right. Ramesh Ponnuru’s assurance regarding Trump that “this too shall pass” may be underestimating Trump’s staying power, but at some point he will pass.

But if mass legal immigration is permitted to continue, the Right is finished regardless of what Trump does or says.

If the federal immigration program continues to operate at its current pace — about 1 million green cards issued per year — it will create nearly 15 million potential new voters over the next two decades, disproportionately liberal, as I will explain below. If Senator Rubio and the rest of the Republican establishment had gotten its way and the House had passed Chuck Schumer’s bill, the number of these potential new voters minted by mass immigration by 2036 would have been more than double that, over 32 million.

What are the likely political leanings of these millions of voters imported by Congress and the president? Conservative immigration romantics imagine them to be natural Republicans, having a right-winger inside just waiting to burst out, if only they’re welcomed with open arms.

Unfortunately, a mountain of survey research gives us no reason to believe that to be the case. Put simply, immigrants and their adult children are disproportionately big-government liberals who vote heavily Democrat because that party’s policies accord with their own views and interests.

This conclusion isn’t based on tendentious survey questions or a one-off poll that doesn’t reflect true views. Rather, survey after survey after survey after survey hammers the point home: Immigration increases the electoral power of the Left.

Immigrants are disproportionately big-government liberals who vote heavily Democrat because that party’s policies accord with their own views and interests.

Let’s look at just a sprinkling of the findings (examine them in more detail in a comprehensive review of immigrant policy preferences published by Eagle Forum). The 2008 National Annenberg Election Survey found that 62 percent of immigrants supported government health insurance, as opposed to 45 percent of the native-born. The 2010 Cooperative Congressional Election Study found 58 percent of immigrants supported affirmative action, versus 35 percent of natives.

The Pew Research Center found in 2011 that Hispanics (mainly immigrants or the children of immigrants) had the most negative view of capitalism of any group polled — more negative even than self-identified supporters of Occupy Wall Street.

Pew also found that 75 percent of Hispanics preferred a larger government providing more services to a small one providing fewer; the figure for the public at large was just 41 percent. It’s true that support for bigger government is lower among the adult grandchildren of Hispanic immigrants, at “only” 58 percent. But not only is even this figure disturbingly high, it’s not clear that it tells us anything about the grandchildren of today’s immigrants — their grandparents arrived at least half a century ago in a very different America.

WP: Marine experiment finds women get injured more frequently, shoot less accurately than men

Women in combat is a terrible idea.

NYT: As a Boom Fades, Brazilians Wonder How It All Went Wrong

New York Times: “Highlighting the strain, Standard & Poor’s downgraded Brazil’s credit rating to junk status on Wednesday, igniting a broad sell-off of Brazilian financial assets on Thursday. The blow is expected to increase Brazil’s borrowing costs while focusing even more scrutiny on the government’s inability to rein in public spending.”

The average IQ in Brazil is 87, just two points above American blacks, so of course it is going to be a basketcase.
