Luke Ford Needs A Wife

Chaim Amalek emails:

Nothing more compellingly chastises a man for not being married than being sick.  (Of course, not having real health insurance, and trying to sleep in a room that’s 16 degrees above freezing do not help matters any.)

So here I sit/groan, trapped in the netherworld between contemplating the task of vomiting out my brains and otherwise disposing of everything I ate in the last 48 hours.

Luke, find yourself a good woman (how is it that Holly is still single?) to care for you.  Otherwise, my plight may be your future.

Perhaps you should resurrect Lukefordneedsawife blog.

Spinka Scandal

The blogger Orthodonomics posts to Cross-Currents:

I might be one of the few bloggers who has the tax notes sitting on my nightstand. I would not use insularity as the description to describe the basis for this scheme, but arrogance. The sheer span, depth, and width of this scheme, which evolved as it became more widespread and there were more tracks to cover, involved perpetrators from different subgroups of the Orthodox community, from lawyers to the Spinka Rebbe himself. I believe I have enough of a background with fraud to say that insularity combined with ignorance can bring out the yetzer hara for small crimes, but arrogance combined with desperation is the brainchild behind such complicated schemes as we have been continually witnessing for at least 20 years.

In addition, to the poster who suggested Choshen Mishapat should become standard for men and especially women, I would also like to point out that we as parents need to make sure our daughters believe they are equal partners in the financial dealings of the household. No one should sign on the line of their next 1040 without knowing where the income and where the deductions came from. Every single one of the “victimless crimes” leaves a wife and children as the victims when their families are torn apart.

Evan Sayet’s Right To Laugh Dinner Jan. 27 at HaHa Cafe In North Hollywood

Evan Sayet (read our interview) emails:

It’s been a while (I’ve been busy writing the book), so I’ve decided to hold a Right to Laugh night of conservative comedy.  It’s going to be Sunday, January 27th (there’s no football that day) at the Ha Ha Cafe in North Hollywood.

I’m doing it a little differently this time, an early dinner (buffet)/show package.  Doors open at five for dinner and schmoozing (and those of you who have attended before know it’s the best Republican/conservative gathering in Southern California) with the show itself (see reviews below), kicking off at around six.

Dinner and the show are just thirty dollars (tickets sold at the door), with free parking in the B of A lot across the street.

Please try to join us and, if you’re a member of a Republican or conservative group let your members know about this great event.

Hope to see you all on the 27th.

Evan

Here’s the info:

The Ha Ha Cafe

Here’s what the critics are saying about me:

"Evan Sayet explodes pernicious stereotypes with refreshing humor that is simultaneously thought-provoking and hilarious…" — Michael Medved,
nationally syndicated radio talk show host.

"Evan Sayet is simply the best political comedian working in America today" — David Horowitz, author of the NY Times best seller, "The Professors — the 101 Most Dangerous Academics in America."

"Evan Sayet is one of my favorite cultural commentators," Tammy Bruce, nationally syndicated radio talk show host and best selling author.

"At last I can delight in a show that is genuinely funny.  My thanks to Evan Sayet," – Larry Elder, nationally syndicated radio talk show host.

"Evan has crossed that line from funny to important," Michael Barone, US News and World Report.

"Evan is HILARIOUS!!!" Ann Coulter, best selling author, "If Democrats Had Brains They’d Be Republicans."

Even the enemy can’t help but offer praise:

"(Evan Sayet’s) a funny guy…he had the crowd howling." — Marc Cooper, LA Weekly (Los Angeles’ Ultra-Liberal "alternative weekly").

Why didn’t TMZ mock the deaths of Suzanne Pleshette & Bobby Fischer?

Tabloid Baby reports:

So why did the scat queens at the corporate porn-pushing gossip site TMZ.com back off on the flip cruelty when reporting on the painful death of lovely actress Suzanne Pleshette this morning? The giddy boys and dull copywriters at the Time Warner/AOL operation had been on a real roll when it came to making light and making fun of the passings of the accomplished when it suddenly switched gears, playing it as straight as might be possible in the towel-snapping West Hollywood clubhouse. Was it Ms. Pleshette’s perceived classiness? Does one of the TMZ gang assume her identity in the Halloween Parade? Or was it something else?

In any case, something put the brakes on the crude cruelty, the most recent cycle of which began on Friday when the site that’s brought entertainment coverage to uncharted Danteesque circles offended many beyond their comfort zone when sports fans caught wind that TMZ had announced the death of former NFL team owner Georgia Frontiere’s death with the pithy headline:

Frontiere Kicks It

That posting followed the report on her hospitalization and turn for the worse:

NFL Owner Gets Two-Minute Warning

While sports radio commentators were expressing disgust at the lack of taste and compassion, the TMZ boys topped themselves the next day with a headline about the death of Brentwood resident Allan Melvin, who played Sam The Butcher on The Brady Bunch:

Sam the Butcher to the Deep Freeze

The indifference and lack of compassion must have so impressed the AOL Time Warner executives that word apparently went out later in the day to find some other elderly celebrity death to make fun of. So yesterday afternoon, TMZ reached back more than a week, to the death of Carl’s Jr founder Carl Karcher on January 11th– all for the headline

Carl at God’s Big Drive Thru

So it is puzzling why this morning, the death of Suzanne Pleshette got the comparatively tame pun:

It’s Not a Bad Dream: Suzanne Pleshette Dies

What? No "From The Birds to The Vultures"? Why not "Pleshette could have used use a ‘new heart’– and lungs"? Why’d Harvey wimp out?

Then again, maybe we’re missing the big story here. Like why did the death of chess genius-turned virulent anti-Semite rate only a

Bobby Fischer dies

headline, and a description of the mad Jew-hating lunatic as "chess prodigy-turned enigma"? Typical lack of historic knowledge, context and smarts?

Or is it a bit of self-hatred?

Harvey?

60 Minutes, Charlie Rose & the racial slur

Tabloid Baby reports:

New York city socialite and PBS celebrity apple polisher Charlie Rose is the latest entertainer to win one of the plum jobs at CBS News, joining heavyweights Katie Couric and Anderson Cooper as a storyfronter on 60 Minutes.

It’s a grand return to network news for the suave North Carolinian, and in a time of racial sensitivity in the media– think Imus, Obama, Bob Grant, Al Sharpton and that chick from the Golf Channel– proof that forgiveness still has a place.

Charlie is beloved by many for his intelligent, probing obsequiousness, and until now had made it as far as 60 Minutes II back in 1999. But we recall the morning when his career almost went up in the flames of racial intolerance.

Although it appears that the Media Ministry of Truth has erased any mention of it from history, the incident took place in the mid 1980s, when Charlie was making his first splash at CBS News as one of the hosts of Nightwatch, the news show that ran from 2 to 6 a.m., five mornings a week (see Tabloid Baby— its author was a Nightwatch newswriter). Charlie was interviewing a member of the Negro Ensemble Company, when in his distinct Southern drawl, Charlie referred to the group as the "N-gger Ensemble Company,"

There was a great uproar in the media. But it was defused after Charlie gathered the news staff and made an impasioned, teary, "I worked for Bill Moyers" apology in the newsroom. He was forgiven and his career went on.

Nena Cherry Is Dead

I frequently tangled with Nena in 1998 and 1999 due to my reporting that she was HIV-positive. Despite her diagnosis, she continued to do sex work and I thought it was a mitzva to report on her. I hate it when you order a hooker and she turns out to have AIDS. Therefore I wanted to treat my neighbor as myself and remove the stumbling block before the blind.

Gary Smith emailed me last week from Texas. He told me that Nena was dead.

Her real name was Dawn Marie Anderson.

I call Gary and ask him how he knew Nena.

Gary: "I met her at a little club I frequented. She was a bartender. It had to have been 1998.

"She had a couple of websites here in Houston. She’d either come to your place or you could go to hers. For about a year, I was a bodyguard for her. I went to various places with her to keep her out of trouble.

"I lost track of her for six months. Then she showed up at my door and stayed here for a few days. She had a boyfriend who lived round the corner. He used to beat the hell out of her.

"Then I lost track of her again for a while. She came back. She stayed for a few more days. She went to work at a couple of bars. She got real sick. In 2005, she died of AIDS."

Luke: "When did you find out she had AIDS?"

Gary: "About six months after I met her. It was in general conversation. I was at her place having a beer, doing some things for her, and she told me."

Luke: "How did you feel about her working as an escort while she had AIDS?"

Gary: "While I was with her, she never had any sexual contact or even touching them… It was a strictly a visual thing."

Luke: "Are you sure?"

Gary: "Oh yeah. I was there three nights a week for a year."

Luke: "In the room with her and the client?"

Gary: "Just outside the room."

Luke: "How sick was she in her final years?"

Gary: "She got real sick. She got down to skin and bones. She looked very old. She did the best she could. I was not around when she died. I didn’t find out for several months. She did one of her disappearing acts. She was a very pleasant woman to be around. She never asked for anything…

"She claimed people were after her trying to kill her. I never knew that. She hung around bikers…

"I met her husband once or twice at the club. Nice guy. Well dressed."

Luke: "When was the last time you saw her?"

Gary: "It was 2004. Her boyfriend had beat the hell out of her and she’d come over here to talk to me. She called him and he came over. They had it out right here and got back together and left. That was the last time I saw her."

"I asked her why she didn’t leave him and she said she was afraid to."

"She tended to clam up if you asked her too many questions."

"She was in good shape then. When she started going down, she went down fast.

"She didn’t look bad. She talked about getting another breast enlargement. She looked real healthy. She looked tired."

"I read about drugs but the only thing I saw her take was SOMA, a muscle relaxer."

"She was an alcoholic. She had one of those breathalizer things hooked to her truck. Most of the time she’d get someone to blow into it. She was always drinking. When she got to drinking, she could be vicious with her mouth. That probably got her into a lot of trouble with the guys. Even her boyfriend knew that she had AIDS. They sat right here and discussed it."

"A few weeks ago, I asked somebody who knew her as well as I did and they said, ‘Oh, Dawn died a couple of years ago.’"

Judging women based on how they cover their hair

From FrumSatire:

Women in the frum community are judged by many things, how well they can make a kugel, how many children they can have while they are still teenagers, how fast they can roll one of those huge strollers, to shull on shabbos morning or to the last industrial sized can of chrayonaise at the kollel store or even how rude they can be while triple parking on Coney Island Avenue, but there is no way better to judge frum women then by her hair covering or lack of it- in which case she may be considered a member of the tribe in some communities and a heretic in others. The frummer the women is the less hair shows, in the frummest circles they decided to get rid of this problem by shaving their heads and giving them the Pakistani cab driver look with the use of turbans. These ultra frummies have eradicated hair from their heads, synthetic hair and real hair is gone, I have no idea if they shave their other hair- but I wont go there, judging from the way they smell when you get within 10 feet of them- I am confident that no one reading this blog will ever venture down below in the underground world of Hasidic pubic hair customs.

I have wondered a lot about the whole turban concept, especially how they stay upright in the rain. Do they make them with Teflon coating so that they are water resistant, or do they have windproof fleece liners to keep the cold out- since hair usually acts as a natural cold weather protector. Do the settlers in Israel have bullet proof turbans made out of Kevlar? Why don’t I ever see the shaved head ladies wearing shower caps in the rain, they are way more comfy and they are very good when running and we know how much frummies love to run everywhere.

The all inclusive guide to judging and labeling every orthodox Jewish sect

From FrumSatire:

Charedi– You are clutching a stone in your hand while screaming shabbos at the top of your lungs on shimon hatzadik street at kikar shabbos. The first movie you saw was ushpizim, your bakery has separate lines for men and women. The women in Saudi Arabia are treated better then in your neighborhood. You cross the street and avoiud eye contact with any women. You have friends that are part of the Niturei Carta. You think all gays should be burned at the stake. Boro Park and Lakewood is for the modern orthodox.

Modern Chasidish– You have a blog and a frumster account and regularly check up on your yeshivish friends on only simchas who are getting married. You secretly have the internet and let your children see Lipa Shmeltzer movies once in a while. TV is still assur even though you have one behind the mirror in your bedroom that you smuggled into your house in an air conditioner box. You don’t cross the street when you see women and sometimes may look them in the eye if it’s for business. You drive the same cars as other Chasidim but secretly long for a sports car. Your wife may own a real sheitle and not always wear those stupid looking hats, she might even let her hair grow in a little bit.

Flexidish– You post ads on craigslist looking for other Chasidism to partake in a gang bang or for frum married women looking for same. You have a blog devoted to bashing Chasidim but, you retain your identity through your garb as one of them. You go to strip clubs, you cheat in money matters, you know every free porn site on the net. You have the internet, you have a TV and you watch movies. You may even eat non chasidishe shechite like or gasp Lubavitch shechite. You do not keep kosher or shabbos but still consider yourself frum since you have the look!

Modern Orthodox Liberal
– You tend to wear pants, not plan on covering your hair and the mikvah sounds like a nightmare. Guys tend to wear baseball caps and no set type of yarmulke. You commonly refer to yourself as open minded. Kosher in the house, but in Cancun you may be hungry and eat a tuna sandwich or salad out. Tznius is un-womanly, and prohibitive in your mind. There is absolutely nothing wrong with all sorts of entertainment live and un-live. Even a bachelor party with strippers is fine. Jewish music makes your grind your teeth and a mechitza at a wedding pisses you off, mixed dancing tends to be ok. But this is a big category so no making judgments. You tend to be democrats and bush haters. You went to an Ivy league school and went on to persue your masters. You went to any number of schools for high school. Ramaz, local coed Hebrew academy, Yeshiva Flatbush, Frisch, of which you consider to be yeshiva. Tefilin dates are not unheard of, and you call the upper Westside home if you are single. Rabbi Berman and Avi Weiss are your halachic authorities and many a time you will banish certain things as being for the ultra-orthodox. You read the Jewish Week and hang out in Barnes and Nobles on Friday night after dinner. Shull on shabbos is normal but other days is another story.

Carlebachian– Dreads, long hair, nose rings, 420, learning kabbalah and anything Breslov, moshav moddiin, The Dead, Moshav Band, long flowy flower dresses, no makeup, big white wrap around pants, tichalis in your tzitzis, rainbow yarmulkes, tapestries adorn your walls and your succah. Spiritual and crazy at the same time. You tend to want to live in Israel, Boulder- Colorado or Sedona-Arizona. Things like Rainbow gatherings, burning man festival, phish shows, and the gefilte fish crew make your stomach warm and fuzzy. You tend to be from modern orthodox homes and somehow in Israel wind up spending a shabbos in Bat Ayin or Mashav Modiin and you are love stricken with all the dread locks and free weed and learning of chassidus. You tend to be a cross between a Breslover and a Lubavitcher with a little Alan Ginsburg thrown in the mix. You tend to keep halacha mostly besides hugging the opposite sex and drugs.

Conservadox– You are conservative but do not support the recent decision to ordain gay rabbis. You keep a kosher home, you eat Hebrew National, you probably eat milk and veggie out of the house. Your shull has no mechitza but every one sits separately. You speak Yiddish and half a bunch of orthodox relatives. You grew up religious but drifted away. Your children will probably intermarry and will either love or hate you and your old school ways. You vote Democratic unless you are from the south. You look at the ingredients to decide if its kosher. Ratners and 2nd avenue deli bring back fond childhood memories.

Flexidox– One week you are frum the next you are seen at McDonalds eating a cheeseburger. You were one of those kids who was labeled as a kid at risk by the 1996 Jewish Observer article. You used to be a big fan of Metallica and hang out on avenue J in Flatbush trying to pick up girls. You have your highs and lows, you may attend those shmuzim given by Rabbi Shafier from theshmuz.com to get inspired. You tend to have only Jewish friends and go to Jewish parties. Kosher meat is anything with split hooves and chewing of cud. Keeping kosher is hard in New York for you. Modern orthodoxy is against the way you were brought up. You are a product of priority one and Niveh or Ner Jake. Oxy cotton and zanax are all the rage. You play a lot of online poker and tend to download tons of movies.

612 Mitzvahdox 612er for short– You are frum, you go to shachris, you learn every day bchavrusa, and you keep 100% kosher. You tend to wear a yarmulke wherever you go and rarely watch movies or TV. You just can’t give up sexual contact with the opposite sex. You love sex and you have tons of it. I know tons of people like this by the way. They are frum yidden besides for active sex lives. You know tefilin dates. What’s a guy/girl to do?

Homodox
You admire Isaac Mizrahi, You have no intention of marriage. For a bachelor, you have a really clean apartment! You admire “Rabbi” Steve Goldstein. Your favorite film is “Trembling Before G-D” You’re having an online betting on when YCT will follow JTS’s lead and become inclusive to gays. Your favorite director is Eytan Fox. You took your mother to “Fiddler on the Roof” on Broadway because you admire Harvey Fierstein. You were disappointed he played Tevye, not Goldie. You place ads on craigslist looking for “hot YU guys” and you know how to cook and talk about wine. You love queer eye for the straight guy and wish that sex in the city was with guy characters. Got this idea from the maze artist
