This group was a fringe militant group that ran afoul of the law and all common sense a few years ago when they tried to blow up the Mosque. They have no Orthodox or other religious backing. It is a collection of psychopaths claiming to be "Breslov", which is a convenient label since anyone can claim to be "Breslov" as it was a non-dynastic chassidut, and the name once had some "alternative" chic cache (amazing how easy it is to destroy the reputation of a great thinker, no matter what these folks do I will love Likutei Moharan and the stories).
These guys are goons, the police has had to come in to their "yeshiva" more than once.
I pointed out the possible link to the mosque maniacs some time ago, by the way…
Any link these psychos have to Judaism, Torah, Jewish thought or history is accidental at best (and you folks out there know I am not a reflexive defender of anything in a kippa). They need to be arrested and thrown into a locked prison psychiatric unit like Son of Sam or other criminal schizophrenics no matter what outfit they wear. This was true of Uzi Meshulam as well, and surprisingly, he still has defenders!
As many readers have pointed out, this problem is compounded in Israel due to popularity of opposition to "refuah conventionalit", science, education, and the economic situation that causes people to prey on others for profit (so that even properly trained doctors, to make money "under the table" will sell homeopathic and "alternativi" drugs in a cynical manner to the willing-deluded to make ends meet).
SephardiMan posts: "Breslov is an evil Ukrainian Jewish cult founded by a deluded but brilliant self proclaimed Messiah. No one who calls themselves ‘Sephardi’ has any business being involved in this nonsense."
Dave posts: "Kabbalah is a refuge for weak minds and idle minds. It was an aberration developed at a time of extreme persecution. If someone thinks they’re bored with studying Tanach and Talmud, the answer is not to start studying Kabbalah, but to get a job!"
PureSphardic posts:
Rabbi Benayahu Shmueli,
I used to hang around his place a lot, in the Nahlaot neighborhood of Jerusalem.
He is not considered Head of the Mekubalim, though his students might refer to him as such.
The "Yeshiva" is a mixture of American Breslov druggies, and heavy style Baale Teshuva, I learned there several times, the guys there read Zohar like Tehillim.
Rabbi Shmueli only has his stature by taking over Rabbi Mordechai Sharaby’s Position, who was known as really knowing his stuff.
Rabbi Shmueli is known for being good with bringing back to religion ex-convicts and learned several Masechtot Gemara with President Katzav.
Structure at this Yeshiva is very loose, and very unlikely that any specific thoughts were spread out between the students, though it is a communal ground for wackos.
…According to Israeli media reports citing friends of Mr. Chen, he began studying Kabbalah Judaism at the age of 11. He left his yeshiva in Jerusalem because he considered it too “open” and began studying the writings of extremely conservative rabbis. Eventually, he became the spiritual leader of a group of ultraconservative students, who called themselves “Pitzuei HaNachal,” or “the wounded of the river.”
In 2005, members of Pitzuei HaNachal were arrested in relation to a plot by Jewish extremists to attack Jerusalem’s Temple Mount, site of Islam’s holy Dome of the Rock, to protest against Israel’s decision to withdraw its soldiers and settlers from the Gaza Strip. Police alleged that Mr. Chen urged the plotters to take a loan from the bank to buy explosives, and promised to introduce them to army veterans who would train them to use the devices.
Police searched Mr. Chen’s apartment [in Beitar Illit, an extremist haredi town] on Thursday, and discovered journals documenting the violence.
Israel’s Yediot Aharonot newspaper said the raid uncovered 30 notebooks of correspondence between Mr. Chen and his followers, in which he explicitly spelled out how the children should be tortured.…
In the correspondence Mr. Chen’s followers never refer to him by name, calling him instead “His Honor the King of the Messiah.” The writings are conversational, as if Mr. Chen’s followers did not speak to him and were only allowed to communicate in writing.…
The Globe and Mail report by Mark MacKinnon is an excellent overview of the case so far.
Meanwhile, according to Ha’aretz, two at least two of the men involved, Shimon Gabai and Avraham Masklatchi, study at Yeshivat Nahar HaShalom.
What is Yeshivat Nahar HaShalom?
It is a Sefardic kabbalists’ yeshiva located just off the Machane Yehuda market in Jerusalem.
Last time I checked, it was headed by Rav Shemueli, who is considered to be the Rosh HaMekubalim, the head of the Sefardic kabbalists in Israel. (By contrast, Rav Kaduri, when he was alive, was considered to be the Zaken, the elder, of the Sefardi kabbalists.
In fairness to Nahar Shalom, it had ba’alei teshuva and less-than-stellar students integrated in the yeshiva, which I believe also had a high school.
Rav Shemueli is a very nice, kind man who I met on two or three occasions 14 years ago and I highly doubt anything taught or practiced by this cult comes from him.
And it is still unclear where Rabbi Elior Chen studied and and what he bases his ‘teachings’ on, although it would seem he, too, studied once at Nahar HaShalom.
Isaac Hersh was being held at Tranquility Bay, a boot camp in Jamaica, which was known for using severe corporal punishment on the children. Allegations have been made that Isaac’s parents (Miriam and Michael Hersh) and Rabbi Aharon Schechter were aware of the schools reputation prior to sending him there.
At around 7:00 AM Isaac Hersh arrived in New York City on a private plane. He will return to the custody of his foster family.
Another boy was released from Tranquility Bay a few weeks ago and stated he witnessed Isaac Hersh being abused. Yesterday during a meeting with US Embassy officials Isaac confirmed the abuse. At the time the other boy was released he begged rabbinical figures to help free Isaac because he is being beaten in the camp and his mental health was deteriorating quickly.
Those involved with freeing Isaac Hersh include, Joshua Ambush, Attorney; Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe, executive director of the Torah Outreach Research Center of Houston and who is also one of the foster parents for Isaac twin brother; Rabbi Avraham Wolbe, Monsey, NY, David Pelcovitz, Phd of Yeshiva University, Mr. Zvi Gluck, Hatzalah, New York, NY; Isaac Klein, Far Rockaway NY and Senator Hillary Clinton.
A huge thank you goes to Rabbi Yosef Shereshevsky from Norfolk Virginia, COO of Wextrust Capital, for financing this operation and providing his private Jet. Also Rabbi Dr. Abraham J. Twerski, Rabbi Dovid Feinstein, Rabbi Shmuel Kamenetsky were involved in the rescue.
As of today Michael Hersh who was the president of Hatzaloh Ambulance Service in New York, is on a leave of absence from his position.
Given this great news about Isaac, we cannot forget about all the other children who are still incarcerated at Tranquility Bay. Please keep them in your prayers over shabbos. As a people we need to make sure all of the children are freed from this torture chamber they call a school.
The Rabbi Yosef Shereshevsky above is famous for denying his wife a get (Jewish divorce) for about 11 years.
A source writes: "A shul that has a group that protests outside the home of people that do not give a get should not glorify the jet donated by someone who left his wife an agunah for years."
Protocol Regarding Certain Recalcitrant Husbands of AgunotThe Supreme Rabbinic Court of America, founded in 5735 (1974) by disciples of the Moetzet Gdolai HaTorah (Council of Sages); to consider and adjudicate extraordinary Jewish problems and issues, has also addressed itself since 5739 (1979) to cases involving recalcitrant husbands who refuse to grant divorces to their wives, when Jewish law has clearly dictated that they must be coerced. The Court’s Chief Justice has written a definitive legal text dealing with the Court’shalachic resolution of such matters, entitled "Lifdot Mechakai Gait" (To Release Those Awaiting a Divorce, Second Edition, Yaron Golan) Tel Aviv5754 (1994) 416pp 8.5 x 11). In addition he has just completed, his soon to be published "The Great Agunah Debate" in English.
During the past year the Court has dealt with a new situation which arose in a case where parties had previously sought our advise, namely the attempt by a husband to arrange "kidushai ktana" ie betroth a minoras a further act of extortion against his oppressed Aguna wife. While that case is formally before a Rabbinic Court; and the husband ignored the decrees of said Court, our Court decided to invoke extraordinary halachic measures if there is a clear and present danger to the Jewish Community, as when "kiddushai ktana" appeared to be adopted by other unscrupulous recalcitrant husbands as a nefarious addition to their crimes.
Accordingly, our Bet Din has gleaned from its rank and file a "Sanhedrin Ktana" being a body of 23 justices comprising Rabbanin and Dayanim, to deal with all cases of "kidushai ktana" in general and two husbands in particular who attempted to implement it. Furthermore, we are also addressing the case of one recalcitrant husband, whose aggravated treatment of his Aguna wife has been barbaric and a burden to the Jewish community. We invoke, by edict "universal jurisdiction where igun is involved (Rashbash 46)".
Applying the principle of "Even though the Sanhedrin was discontinued, its four capital punishments still persist (Sanhedrin 37b)," our minor Sanhedrin acting under the rubric of Horaat Shaah -emergency measures – as articulated in the Shulchan Aruch Choshen Ha Mishpat (Title 2) and its enabling statues to execute capital punishment in extenuating circumstances; hereby: 1.Serves warning that our Court is prepared to sentence to death any husband who within the next 30 days fails to release his Aguna wife voluntarily with a "gait", who has been involved directly, or indirectly by threat, in actuality and/or innuendo in kidushai ktana. More specifically, we identify two such husbands, Israel Goldstein and Yosef Shereshevsky. The latter has been in contempt of the Gedolai Torah Bet Din since Sivan 5753 (1993).
Seattle-headquartered Washington Mutual, which recently entered into definitive agreements to raise an aggregate $7 billion through direct sale of equity securities to an investment vehicle managed by TPG Capital, says that its business plans include closing all of its freestanding home loan offices and its wholesale lending channel.
These closures are expected to be completed by the end of the second quarter. The firm also reported a net loss of approximately $1.1 billion, or $1.40 per diluted share, for the first quarter of 2008.
"This substantial new capital – along with the other steps we are announcing today – will position us for a return to profitability as these elevated credit costs subside," states Kerry Killinger, chairman and CEO of WaMu. "With the support of these investors, we have every confidence in our ability to deal with today’s market conditions and restore shareholder value."
I’ve been cutting my own hair for the past three months. I just gave myself a severe trim this morning. Come into my cam and give me some feedback. Perhaps I have a future in the beauty profession?
A Jew emails: "u look great i am sure all of Hollywood will use u as a barber your hair is nicer than that faggot who ran for president because his wife got cancer."
You know how strippers say they’re using the money from their tawdry work to pay for college? Well, my story is that I’m using my money on sacred texts such as the masechta Bava Kama Sutra.
If I were a rich man, I’d sit in the synagogue seven hours a day and discuss the holy books.
I’m getting a lot of linky love these days from the DailyYid, which gives the Jew everything he needs to know in Yiddish each day to serve his Maker.

It seems strange that Rabbi Yona Metzger would be making the following statement, especially since he was accused of sexual misconduct/clergy sexual abuse (with four men) several years ago.
I strongly disagree with the statement Rabbi Metzger made regarding excommunicating the parents of the children who were so horrendously abused. Even though the actions came from their own hands, I believe that they were being manipulated and were acting under the explicit directions of their spiritual leader/cult leader, Rabbi Elior Chen.
Many individuals who get involved with cults, often have histories of child abuse and or neglect. From past experience in working with ex-cult members, I found that women who have left abusive relationships are also more susceptible to getting involved in cult like groups.
The basic issue is that adult survivors of child abuse (emotional, physical and sexual abuse) and those battered as adults are looking for unconditional love. What happens is they get manipulated in believing that their leader represents "the truth." They no longer are able to access their ability to use deductive reasoning / critical thinking.
Though I do believe these parents should no longer have custody of their children, I do not believe that we should make blanket statements stating they should all be excommunicated. We need to look at each situation on a case by case basis. I also have mixed feelings about the parents and the criminal cases that will be brought up against them. If these parents were unable to access their critical thinking, would they then be considered mentally ill? Were they at the time of each act unable to discern right from wrong? I’m not trying to make excuses for their behavior, it’s just that I think there is much more to the story then what we are reading in the newspapers. The parents psychiatric help and exit counseling. This can occur either in a prison or a psychiatric facility. I believe that the parents are most likely individuals who most likely have the potential for rehabilitation.
I do not believe this is true when talking about Rabbi Elior Chen. I do agree with Rabbi Metzger that Chen should loose his rabbinical title and believe he should spend the rest of his life in a prison. I do not believe he will ever be safe to be out with the rest of our society.
Below is the article that was in the Jerusalem Post, below that is information on Destructive Cults.
Following a spate of allegations of child abuse in the religious community, Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi Yona Metzger called on rabbis to "unhesitatingly renounce" such violent acts.
In a statement released Tuesday night, Metzger said that abusive parents and rabbis must be "condemned" and "excommunicated."
He told community rabbis to express their disapproval and the disapproval of the Torah for such "acts of brutality."

Most people who brainwash…use methods similar to those of prison guards who recognize that physical control is never easily accomplished without the cooperation of the prisoner. The most effective way to gain that cooperation is through subversive manipulation of the mind and feelings of the victim, who then becomes a psychological, as well as a physical, prisoner. (from an Amnesty International publication, "Report on Torture", which depicts the brainwashing of prisoners of war.
Isolation
• Deprives individual of social support, effectively rendering him unable to resist
• Makes individual dependent upon interrogator
• Develops an intense concern with self.
Once a person is away from longstanding emotional support and thus reality checks, it is fairly easy to set a stage for brainwashing. Spiritually abusive groups work to isolate individuals from friends and family, whether directly, by requiring the individuals to forsake friends and family for the sake of the "Kingdom" (group membership), or indirectly, by preaching the necessity to demonstrate one’s love for God by "hating" one’s father, mother, family, friends.
Abusive groups are not outward-looking, but inward-looking, insisting that members find all comfort and support and a replacement family within the group. Cut off from friends, relatives, previous relationships, abusive groups surround the recruits and hammer rigid ideologies into their consciousness, saturating their senses with specific doctrines and requirements of the group.
Isolated from everyone but those within the group, recruits become dependent upon group members and leaders and find it difficult if not impossible to offer resistance to group teachings. They become self-interested and hyper-vigilant, very fearful should they incur the disapproval of the group, which now offers the only support available to them which has group approval.
Warning signs
The seed of extremism exists wherever a group demands all the free time of a member, insisting he be in church every time the doors are open and calling him to account if he isn’t, is critical or disapproving of involvements with friends and family outside the group, encourages secrecy by asking that members not share what they have seen or heard in meetings or about church affairs with outsiders, is openly, publicly, and repeatedly critical of other churches or groups (especially if the group claims to be the only one which speaks for God), is critical when members attend conferences, workshops or services at other churches, checks up on members in any way, i.e., to determine that the reason they gave for missing a meeting was valid, or makes attendance at all church functions mandatory for participating in church ministry or enjoying other benefits of church fellowship.
Once a member stops interacting openly with others, the group’s influence is all that matters. He is bombarded with group values and information and there is no one outside the group with whom to share thoughts or who will offer reinforcement or affirmation if the member disagrees with or doubts the values of the group. The process of isolation and the self-doubt it creates allow the group and its leaders to gain power over the members. Leaders may criticize major and minor flaws of members, sometimes publicly, or remind them of present or past sins. They may call members names, insult them or ignore them, or practice a combination of ignoring members at some times and receiving them warmly at others, thus maintaining a position of power (i.e., the leaders call the shots.)
The sense of humiliation makes members feel they deserve the poor treatment they are receiving and may cause them to allow themselves to be subjected to any and all indignities out of gratefulness that one as unworthy as they feel is allowed to participate in the group at all. When leaders treat the member well occasionally, they accept any and all crumbs gratefully. Eventually, awareness of how dependent they are on the group and gratitude for the smallest attention contributes to an increasing sense of shame and degradation on the part of the members, who begin to abuse themselves with "litanies of self-blame," i.e., "No matter what they do to me, I deserve it, as sinful and wretched as I am. I deserve no better. I have no rights but to go to hell. I should be grateful for everything I receive, even punishment."
Monopolization of Perception
• Fixes attention upon immediate predicament; fosters introspection
• Eliminates stimuli competing with those controlled by captor
• Frustrates all actions not consistent with compliance
Abusive groups insist on compliance with trivial demands related to all facets of life: food, clothing, money, household arrangements, children, conversation. They monitor members’ appearances, criticize language and child care practices. They insist on precise schedules and routines, which may change and be contradictory from day to day or moment to moment, depending on the whims of group leaders.
At first, new members may think these expectations are unreasonable and may dispute them, but later, either because they want to be at peace or because they are afraid, or because everyone else is complying, they attempt to comply. After all, what real difference does it make if a member is not allowed to wear a certain color, or to wear his hair in a certain way, to eat certain foods, or say certain words, to go certain places, watch certain things, or associate with certain individuals. In the overall scheme of things, does it really matter? In fact, in the long run, the member begins to reason, it is probably good to learn these disciplines, and after all, as they have frequently been reminded, they are to submit to spiritual authority as unto the Lord.. Soon it becomes apparent that the demands will be unending, and increasing time and energy are focused on avoiding group disapproval by doing something "wrong." There is a feeling of walking on eggs. Everything becomes important in terms of how the group or its leaders will respond, and members’ desires, feelings and ideas become insignificant. Eventually, members may no longer even know what they want, feel or think. The group has so monopolized all of the members’ perceptions with trivial demands that members lose their perspective as to the enormity of the situation they are in.
The leaders may also persuade the members that they have the inside track with God and therefore know how everything should be done. When their behavior results in disastrous consequences, as it often does, the members are blamed. Sometimes the leaders may have moments, especially after abusive episodes, when they appear to humble themselves and confess their faults, and the contrast of these moments of vulnerability with their usual pose of being all-powerful endears them to members and gives hope for some open communication.
Threats sometimes accompany all of these methods. Members are told they will be under God’s judgment, under a curse, punished, chastised, chastened if they leave the group or disobey group leaders. Sometimes the leaders, themselves, punish the members, and so members can never be sure when leaders will make good on the threats which they say are God’s idea. The members begin to focus on what they can do to meet any and all group demands and how to preserve peace in the short run. Abusive groups may remove children from their parents, control all the money in the group, arrange marriages, destroy personal items of members or hide personal items.
Warning signs: Preoccupation with trivial demands of daily life, demanding strict compliance with standards of appearance, dress codes, what foods are or are not to be eaten and when, schedules, threats of God’s wrath if group rules are not obeyed, a feeling of being monitored, watched constantly by those in the group or by leaders. In other words, what the church wants, believes and thinks its members should do becomes everything, and you feel preoccupied with making sure you are meeting the standards. It no longer matters whether you agree that the standards are correct, only that you follow them and thus keep the peace and in the good graces of leaders.
Induced Debility and Exhaustion
People subjected to this type of spiritual abuse become worn out by tension, fear and continual rushing about in an effort to meet group standards. They must often avoid displays of fear, sorrow or rage, since these may result in ridicule or punishment. Rigid ministry demands and requirements that members attend unreasonable numbers of meetings and events makes the exhaustion and ability to resist group pressure even worse.
Warning Signs:
Feelings of being overwhelmed by demands, close to tears, guilty if one says no to a request or goes against a church standards. Being intimidated or pressured into volunteering for church duties and subjected to scorn or ridicule when one does not "volunteer." Being rebuked or reproved when family or work responsibilities intrude on church responsibilities.
Occasional Indulgences
• Provides motivation for compliance
Leaders of abusive groups often sense when members are making plans to leave and may suddenly offer some kind of indulgence, perhaps just love or affection, attention where there was none before, a note or a gesture of concern. Hope that the situation in the church will change or self doubt ("Maybe I’m just imagining it’s this bad,") then replace fear or despair and the members decide to stay a while longer. Other groups practice sporadic demonstrations of compassion or affection right in the middle of desperate conflict or abusive episodes. This keeps members off guard and doubting their own perceptions of what is happening.
Some of the brainwashing techniques described are extreme, some groups may use them in a disciplined, regular manner while others use them more sporadically. But even mild, occasional use of these techniques is effective in gaining power.
Warning Signs:
Be concerned if you have had an ongoing desire to leave a church or group you believe may be abusive, but find yourself repeatedly drawn back in just at the moment you are ready to leave, by a call, a comment or moment of compassion. These moments, infrequent as they may be, are enough to keep hope in change alive and thus you sacrifice years and years to an abusive group.
Devaluing the Individual
• Creates fear of freedom and dependence upon captors
• Creates feelings of helplessness
• Develops lack of faith in individual capabilities
Abusive leaders are frequently uncannily able to pick out traits church members are proud of and to use those very traits against the members. Those with natural gifts in the areas of music may be told they are proud or puffed up or "anxious to be up front" if they want to use their talents and denied that opportunity. Those with discernment are called judgmental or critical, the merciful are lacking in holiness or good judgment, the peacemakers are reminded the Lord came to bring a sword, not peace. Sometimes efforts are made to convince members that they really are not gifted teachers or musically talented or prophetically inclined as they believed they were. When members begin to doubt the one or two special gifts they possess which they have always been sure were God-given, they begin to doubt everything else they have ever believed about themselves, to feel dependent upon church leaders and afraid to leave the group. ("If I’ve been wrong about even *that*, how can I ever trust myself to make right decisions ever again?").
Warning Signs:
Unwillingness to allow members to use their gifts. Establishing rigid boot camp-like requirements for the sake of proving commitment to the group before gifts may be exercised. Repeatedly criticizing natural giftedness by reminding members they must die to their natural gifts, that Paul, after all, said, "When I’m weak, I’m strong," and that they should expect God to use them in areas other than their areas of giftedness. Emphasizing helps or service to the group as a prerequisite to church ministry. This might take the form of requiring that anyone wanting to serve in any way first have the responsibility of cleaning toilets or cleaning the church for a specified time, that anyone wanting to sing in the worship band must first sing to the children in Sunday School, or that before exercising any gifts at all, members must demonstrate loyalty to the group by faithful attendance at all functions and such things as tithing. No consideration is given to the length of time a new member has been a Christian or to his age or station in life or his unique talents or abilities. The rules apply to everyone alike. This has the effect of reducing everyone to some kind of lowest common denominator where no one’s gifts or natural abilities are valued or appreciated, where the individual is not cherished for the unique blessing he or she is to the body of Christ, where what is most highly valued is service, obedience, submission to authority, and performance without regard to gifts or abilities or, for that matter, individual limitations.
—————————- Characteristics of a Destructive Cult
reFOCUS
What is a Cult?
A cult is a group or movement exhibiting a great or excessive devotion or dedication to some person, idea, or thing and employing unethically manipulative techniques of persuasion and control (e.g., isolation from former friends and family, debilitation, use of special methods to heighten suggestibility and subservience, powerful group pressures, information management, suspension of individuality or critical judgment, promotion of total dependency on the group and fear of leaving it, etc.) designed to advance the goals of the group’s leaders to the actual or possible detriment of members, their families, or the community. (West & Langone, 1986)
Characteristics of a Destructive Cult
1. Authoritarian pyramid structure with authority at the top
2. Charismatic or messianic leader(s) (Messianic meaning they either say they are God OR that they alone can interpret the scriptures the way God intended…..the leaders are self-appointed.
3. Deception in recruitment and/or fund raising
4. Isolation from society — not necessarily physical isolation like on some compound in Waco, but this can be psychological isolation — the rest of the world is not saved, not Christian, not transformed (whatever) — the only valid source of feedback and information is the group.
5. Use of mind control techniques (we use Dr. Robert Jay Lifton’s criteria from chapter 22 of his book Thought Reform & the Psychology of Totalism to compare whether the eight psychological and social methods he lists are present in the group at question)
• Milieu Control: Control of the environment and communication within the environment
• Mystical Manipulation: Seeks to promote specific patterns of behavior and emotion in such a way that it appears to have arisen spontaneously from within the environment, while it actually has been orchestrated totalist leaders claim to be agents chosen by God, history, or some supernatural force, to carry out the mystical imperative the "principles" (God-centered or otherwise) can be put forcibly and claimed exclusively, so that the cult and its beliefs become the only true path to salvation (or enlightenment)
• Demand for Purity: The world becomes sharply divided into the pure and the impure, the absolutely good (the group/ideology) and the absolutely evil (everything outside the group) one must continually change or conform to the group "norm"; tendencies towards guilt and shame are used as emotional levers for the group’s controlling and manipulative influences
• Confession: Cultic confession is carried beyond its ordinary religious, legal and therapeutic expressions to the point of becoming a cult in itself sessions in which one confesses to one’s sin are accompanied by patterns of criticism and self-criticism, generally transpiring within small groups with an active and dynamic thrust toward personal change
• Sacred Science: The totalist milieu maintains an aura of sacredness around its basic doctrine or ideology, holding it as an ultimate moral vision for the ordering of human existence questioning or criticizing those basic assumptions is prohibited a reverence is demanded for the ideology/doctrine, the originators of the ideology/doctrine, the present bearers of the ideology/doctrine offers considerable security to young people because it greatly simplifies the world and answers a contemporary need to combine a sacred set of dogmatic principles with a claim to a science embodying the truth about human behavior and human psychology
• Loading the Language: Words are given new meanings — the outside world does not use the words or phrases in the same way — it becomes a "group" word or phrase
• Doctrine Over Person: If one questions the beliefs of the group or the leaders of the group, one is made to feel that there is something inherently wrong with them to even question — it is always "turned around" on them and the questioner/criticizer is questioned rather than the questions answered directly the underlying assumption is that doctrine/ideology is ultimately more valid, true and real than any aspect of actual human character or human experience and one must subject one’s experience to that "truth" the experience of contradiction can be immediately associated with guilt one is made to feel that doubts are reflections of one’s own evil when doubt arises, conflicts become intense.
• Dispensing of Existence: Since the group has an absolute or totalist vision of truth, those who are not in the group are bound up in evil, are not enlightened, are not saved, and do not have the right to exist; impediments to legitimate being must be pushed away or destroyed one outside the group may always receive their right of existence by joining the group; fear manipulation — if one leaves this group, one leaves God or loses their salvation/transformation, or something bad will happen to them; the group is the "elite", outsiders are "of the world", "evil", "unenlightened", etc.
People from shuls I attend have been coming into my chat room. They know me but I don’t know them.
"Doesn’t that drive you crazy?" asked one. "I know who you are but you don’t know who I am."
"That’s the life I chose," I responded.
"Most people at shul like and respect you," said one chatter.
That’s good. I often feel like a nuclear bomb could land on me in shul and nobody else would be effected — such is the distance between me and others.
Maybe it’s just the psychic distance I feel. After all, as Rabbi Joseph Telushkin said, when you gossip about people, it increases your psychic distance from others.
But I don’t gossip about people I daven with. I don’t like tension in my own home. I’m all for shalom bayit. And when I do gossip, it is all publicly on my blog and for the sake of Heaven and I’m always in my chat room to discuss it.
Says a chatter: "Well, obviously those people who "hate" you, haven’t had to privilege to have the fascinating conversations I’ve had with you."
The David Karnes (not the one who helped find two cops amid the wreckage of 9/11 at ground zero) who wrote this heartbreaking op/ed in the Los Angeles Times is the gay disco queen Millie behind discosound.com.

On March 6, as one investigator later put it, I was the "unluckiest person in the world." That morning, someone bombed the military recruiting station in New York’s Times Square, and 3,000 miles away, the fallout landed on me.
A 64-page pamphlet and a 20-page memo I wrote to Capitol Hill Democrats had reached lawmakers the very day the bomb went off. Knowing the odds against anyone actually reading what I sent, I had included a photograph to grab their attention. It shows me in a victory pose in front of that Times Square recruiting station’s neon flag, with the caption "We Did It!" To the authorities, it was a smoking gun. My explanation is only found at the end of the memo: "I have enclosed the Holiday card I sent out to family and friends after the 2006 election. I hope and fully expect to have reason to send out an equally jubilant card after this November’s results."
On arriving home that evening, I was met by FBI agents, dogs and a bomb squad. After consenting to thorough questioning and a search of my home, I was greatly relieved to learn the next morning that the FBI publicly cleared me of any connection to the bombing.
As it turned out, my relief was a little premature. I began surfing the Internet and realized just how stridently fingers had pointed in my direction. The tabloid headlines left little room for doubt: "Letters Claim Responsibility for Times Square Blast" (the New York Post); " ‘We Did It’ Taunts Sicko’s Manifesto" (the New York Daily News).
Also striking was how the media, without any firsthand information, had adopted stock descriptions of both me and my writings: an "antiwar activist" (Fox News and USA Today); an "anarchist manifesto" (cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com); "a political manifesto railing against the Iraq war" (CBS News); and an "anti-Iraq war screed" (michellemalkin.com).
In fact, my "activism" rarely leaves my keyboard, and I have never opposed any U.S. military action before 2003. As for Iraq, it is only one of many topics addressed in my congressional mailings, and my message was that "there is no easy way out" and that instead of debating "withdrawal," Democrats should offer "compelling and alternative" positions on "unilateralist foreign policy, preemptive war, effective counter-terrorism [and] genuine ‘pro-Israel’ policies."
The only ones to get it right were the law enforcement personnel who read what I actually wrote. One investigator told me (correctly) that many of my views sounded "conservative," and New York Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly fairly characterized the mailings as "innocuous": "It’s really advice to the Democratic Party as to how to win the 2008 election."
I hoped my clearance by the FBI would keep me out of the spotlight, but the focus simply shifted to what one official described as an "incredibly unbelievable coincidence." New York Democratic Rep. Gary Ackerman calculated the odds at "a million-to-one times a million-to-one."
Given those odds, much of the right-wing blogosphere insisted that Democrats, the congressional "antiwar caucus," the post office or the FBI must be engaged in a cover-up: "I do not believe in ‘incredibly unbelievable coincidence[s]" (freerepublic.com); "I just can’t believe there’s no connection" (littlegreenfootballs.com); "There’s only one way we can know for sure. Waterboard him!" (weeklystandard.com)
Then my name surfaced, and I became, as one friend told me, "the talk of the town," as well as a media stereotype: a 50-year-old, single, gay entertainment lawyer coming home from the gym to the Hollywood Hills.
Reporters next located my 82-year-old mother. She lives alone, and with the television news blaring and the phone ringing, anxiety got the best of her. She tried to defend me as "the most gifted, creative person. … He’s been writing letters since he was 13 years old." She then called me and burst out crying: "I hope I did the right thing."
In 1981, a new Republican President, elected with the most reactionary base imaginable, came to power, just as we began facing an Epidemic. It was not a fortuitous combination of events. In the year 2001, a new Republican President, elected with the most reactionary base imaginable, has come to power, just as the evidence is mounting that we are facing a Revival of that Epidemic. I have always felt very secure in my well developed Gay sense of Irony. Yet I am quite sure that I will be at a complete loss to find any elements of Farce if we now make the same mistakes a second time around. Never mind what our very formidable enemies will think. Or do.
I’m not quite sure who is speaking here but it sounds like David Karnes:
“Yes, this awful War. I don’t know if we should disarm Iraq. Or if we should start policing the Middle East or the whole damn World. Maybe we should. All I know is that this whole Administration, the entire GOP, the military crowd, the oil crowd, the Christian Right and all the rest, are completely insane. And this whole country has suddenly used 9/11 as an excuse to turn power over to the most disgusting fascist forces in America. I just can’t believe it! It’s totally1984! Circuit boys are all on crystal and Middle America is all on mood drugs, everyone’s totally sedated, while the most vicious hateful elements in this society are taking over and hatching their plots to dominate the World. Everything put out by the so-called “news media” is total propaganda. I really can’t believe this is happening. And for me it’s all connected. I mean, you know the Saint-at-Large Black Party is my Holiest of Holies. But I don’t see how, with all of these War Drums banging, I can put on a black leather harness and fly 3,000 miles to go dance to some pounding music while my government is bombing yet more countries back to the ‘Stone Age.’ Jesus! WE are the Stone Age! Bush is like that big baboon swinging his club at the beginning of Kubrick’s 2001! What is going on in this country?”
“Are you done?”
“No, I am not! Why don’t people wake up and see this danger. Right here! Right now! Right at home! This Right Wing is totally out of control. They are attacking everything – feminism, environmentalism, civil rights, separation of church and state, fundamental privacy, basic freedoms. Hillary Clinton had it exactly right when she spoke out against the vast right-wing conspiracy. Well, guess what? Now they’re running the country! I just don’t see any hope unless people wake up very quickly. But even if they do, all the Bush Crowd will need is one more terrorist attack, hell, one every 6 months, just what the doctor ordered, and Americans will just cower, clutch their Bibles and follow George Bush and Karl Rove and all the rest into whatever Hellhole they take us! It’s just totally horrifying. I genuinely feel like everything I’ve ever believed in is totally threatened: Humanism. Liberalism. Pluralism. And suddenly it’s just become so clear that a pack of very rich, powerful reactionary men in Washington and New York pretty much decide and control everything. I can’t believe that nobody– except the crazy Left, who are completely ineffectual and capable of speaking only to each other – challenges this set-up! Or sees how dangerous it is for the World. My God! I can barely even stand to read the paper anymore! And everyone, including you, is just out shopping or obsessed with some ridiculously fake “reality” program on TV!”
Here’s a picture of the Jerusalem woman (Michal Schwartz Shenbaum) accused of abusing her kids:
According to two independent sources, the mother of the daughter with the abused children is Naomi Klass Mauer, the founder of The Jewish Press — Rabbi Shalom Klass. Naomi had the bitterest of divorces from her husband Yehuda Schwartz. It was written up in New York magazine (circa 1990) where it strongly hinted she had played around.
Naomi Klass was an agunah — a chained woman because he would not give her a divorce. She says he tried to extort vast amounts of money from her in exchange for a divorce.
She became a champion of the agunot in The Jewish Press, which features a seruv section for men who won’t listen to a Beit Din and won’t give their wives gittim (Jewish divorces).
Moshe Dovid Tendler was the lead rabbi and guru for Rabbi Shalom Klass when he was fighting for his daughter’s Get without offering a significant financial settlement to Yehuda Schwartz. Older Tendler and, yes, Mordechai Tendler, took her and her father in and became near-family for years. Michal and Naomi were constant in both Tendler homes for years. That is a reason why many bloggers complained that the Jewish Press was not only whitewashing the Mordechai Tendler affair but defending him to the bitter end.
A source writes:
Naomi’s claim about her ex husbands abuse and turning her into an agunah is a lot of one-sided bs. Her husband Judah demanded a share for his building up of the newspaper which he did a great job of. She had use of the newspaper to badmouth him. Also many of her so called agunah cases are stories of women who don’t want to take a get because they are trying to get money out of their husbands and will only take a get on their terms. Basically financial disputes. When you turn these cases into ‘Agunah’ cases you cheapen the real chained women.
Btw, apparently her ex husband Judah had sympathy for Dr Ivan Mauer who was a widower at the time and allowed him and his kids to move in with his family, unfortunately his wife went with the Doctor and he got the boot. I don’t think there was infidelity involved and you never know the real story, but it was a pretty strange story.
I am not connected to the Jewish Press in any way shape or form, but admit to being very biased against it.It is just so dumb and silly and so freakin’ rightwing especially when it comes to many people I personally disagree with vehemently such as the rightwing settlers who are stirring up trouble all the time and one of the few newspapers to allow moronic ads about the Lubavitcher Rebbe being alive and the Messiah, when he was alive AND when he passed away! They also lack any real spine, for example years ago when Meir Kahane was banned from the Knesset they stopped his weakly column! Now I think that Kahane was a crazy nut, but if you allowed his rantings before have the balls to print them afterwords too!
Naomi eventually married Dr. Ivan Mauer. They lived in Manhattan Beach, Brooklyn. Michal went to the Shulamit yeshiva.
Michal and her future husband David Shenbaum (a Beth Jacob boy with the nicest parents) moved to Israel and became West Bank Gush Kutif type frum (I am not saying they lived there but that type) and then they moved to the old city of Jerusalem and became Breslaver Hasidim. They were introduced to some characters among the Breslavers who do drugs. These guys got nvolved in their marriage and some of them moved into the home.
YULA graduate (1986?) David Shenbaum (made aliyah in 1993) claims that once these guys moved in, he couldn’t see his children. So why didn’t he go see the police?
Anyone have any information on why these Modern Orthodox types would go on such a dark and deviant path?
How could their kids be so severely abused in the Old City of Jerusalem where everybody lives on top of each other?
According to the charge sheet, the woman’s relationship with her husband broke down last year, and she expressed her desire to divorce her husband, who subsequently left their Jerusalem home, leaving his eight children in the care of his wife and two men who were charged with educating her children.
The men, who allegedly carried out the abuse with the mother, received instruction from Chen on how to "fix" the children’s behavior, and "cleanse" them of their Satanic possession, the indictment says.
…During a search of Chen’s Betar Illit home, police found evidence that appears to link the rabbi to the abuse, including notebooks that document the violence, police said.
"Put stones on a [Shabbat] hot plate . . . when they are boiling, put them on the bodies of the children and then they will be cleansed," the instructions read.
Chen also instructs his followers how to tie up the children, and to prepare alcoholic drinks made of salt water and turpentine, which, he writes, should be given to the children in order to "vomit out the devil from themselves." Among the items police discovered at Chen’s home were hammers, iron bars, turpentine, sticks, and handcuffs.
…One of the woman’s eight children identified him as taking part in the abuse as well, the police representative testified in court.
The charge sheet in the gruesome child abuse case recounts that the mother allegedly forced her children to eat feces, locked them in a suitcase for three days – letting them out only for brief periods of time – repeatedly beat, whipped, and shook them, burned their hands with a lighter and a heater, and gave them freezing showers.
The abusive mother and "educators" are also suspected of pouring salt on the burn wounds of the child, stuffing his mouth with a skullcap and sealing his mouth with masking tape, and giving the children alcoholic drinks until they vomited.
The woman remains in police custody.
Since her arrest last month, the mother was repeatedly shown pictures of her children’s injuries, but on most of the days she was in remand, she did not inquire about the children nor did she ask who was taking care of them, the police said.
Naomi Klass Mauer is associate editor of The Jewish Press and editor of the “Family Issues” section of the newspaper. She is also a frequent contributor of articles to the paper.
Aside from her work at The Jewish Press, Mrs. Mauer spends countless hours helping abused women throughout Brooklyn’s many communities. She also assists women who are denied a religious Jewish divorce from their husbands.
Mrs. Mauer is married to Dr. Ivan Mauer, and is a proud mother and grandmother of a large family, who mostly reside in Israel. Mrs. Mauer is also the daughter of the late Rabbi Sholom Klass and of Mrs. Irene Klass, founders of The Jewish Press.
Naomi Klass is one of the scheduled speakers for this 2008 Pesach event in Arizona (along with Malcolm Hoenlein, Rebbitzen Esther Jungreis etc):
Naomi Klass Mauer: In her role as Associate Publisher of the Jewish Press–the voice of America’s Jewish community for almost half a century, Naomi Mauer has kept this publication true to the principles of its founder-her father, Rabbi Sholom Klass., ZT’L.More than ‘required reading” for thousands of Jews coast to coast and abroad, it is also an undisputed destination for countless political hopefuls and activists seeking a meaningful forum with the Jewish community. The fact that they are judged by performances rather than mere promises, is testimony to Naomi and her family’s unwavering adherence to Rabbi Klass’s original vision Despite the demands of this ever expanding publication, Naomi still finds time to involve herself with countless groups and organizations.

"A Mother, Plaintiff,
-against-
David Kedmi, Defendant.
1. On February 25, 2007, in Kings County, New York, Rabbi Kedmi conducted a ritual circumcision ("bris") and baby naming ceremony for the mother of infant twin children.
2. The woman and her husband were especially excited about the aforementioned bris and baby naming ceremony of their infant twins as they had extremely difficult conceiving and further, the twins were prematurely born approximately eight weeks early and remained in the hospital after birth for at least one month.
3. That in view of the difficulty in conception and premature birth, facts known to the Defendant, the aforementioned bris and baby naming ceremony was to be a joyous celebration of their twins who were now finally healthy enough for the same.
4. At this ceremony however, as is set forth herein, Rabbi Kedmi demand and inappropriately touched "the mother " and made lewd, flirtatious comments to her.
5. More specifically, on the date in question, Rabbi Kedmi touched "the mother’s" buttocks.
6. Further, on the date in question, Rabbi Kedmi suggestively touched "the mother’s" shoulder.
7. That "the mother" did not consent to Rabbi Kedmi touching either her buttocks or shoulder and that such touching was done for no lawful purpose.
8. That on the date in question, Rabbi Kedmi stated to "the mother," by saying, in sum and substance, among other things, that she "looked 17."
9. That on the date in question, Rabbi Kedmi stated to "the mother," by saying in sum and substance, among other things, that she "must have been a beauty queen."
10. That the aforementioned demeaning behavior, including offensive sexual touching and lewd and sexual comments took place in the presence of one or more witnesses, including Rabbi David Kedmi’s wife.
11. Upon information and belief, Rabbi Kedmi’s lewd comments, demeaning behavior and unwanted inappropriate touching of "the mother" is part of a pattern of similar conduct that Rabbi Kedmi has engaged in toward women, including toward other women during similar ceremonies he performed for other children.
12. That after experiencing Rabbi Kedmi’s unlawful behavior as described above, and after later hearing about his alleged similar conduct toward other women, "the mother" reported Rabbi Kedmi to Mr. Jacob Rubinstein, employed at the Young Israel of Scarsdale synagogue "The mother" had utilized Rabbi Kedmi’s services based upon a referral from Mr. Rubinstein.
13. During several conversations with Mr. Rubinstein, "the mother" was repeatedly assured that Mr. Kedmi had been referred for evaluation and treatment to Rabbi Mark Dratch, who, upon information and belief, is employed by an organization known as "JSAFE," and that action would be taken to address and correct Rabbi Kedmi’s behavior.
14. That JSAFE’s mission statement on their website purports that their goal is "to create an environment in which every institution and organization across the spectrum of the Jewish community conducts itself responsibly and effectively in addressing the wrongs of domestic violence, child abuse and professional improprieties — whenever and by whomever they are perpetrated."
15. That "the mother" was assured that Rabbi Kedmi was undergoing treatment and that steps would be taken to protect other women from Rabbi Kedmi’s predatory conduct, but that Rabbi Rubinstein and Rabbi Dratch would not provide details as to any "treatment plan," though "the mother" was assured that "treatment," "counseling" and additional "measures" were all put in place in an effort to correct "Rabbi Kedmi’s behavior and protect women from his unlawful conduct.
16. That "the mother" later learned, in fact, contrary to the assurances provided by Rabbis Rubinstein and Dratch, no meaningful measures were taken to provide treatment to Rabbi Kedmi, to correct his behavior or to protect women from him.
17. That "the mother" later learned that the alleged "measures" implemented were that Rabbi Kedmi was not to be alone with a woman at a bris and that his wife must accompany him when he performs a bris.
18. That, when Mr. Kedmi inappropriately touched "the mother" and made lewd comments to her, there were, in fact, witnesses present, including Rabbi Kedmi’s wife. Therefore, the "measures," were meaningless.
19. That "the mother" and her husband endured great hurdles to make it to what was supposed to be a the joyous occasion of their infant twin’s bris and naming ceremony and instead, the day now evokes anger, pain and sullied memories.
20. As a result of the foregoing, "the mother" has suffered the permanent mark that Rabbi Kedmi has made on a momentous occasion from which "the mother" and her family can never fully recover.
21. That, prior to the filing this lawsuit to hold Rabbi Kedmi accountable for his actions, "the mother", and/or her attorneys: a) had several telephone conversations with rabbis Rubinstein and Dratch; and also b) sent two letters to Rabbi Kedmi and/or his lawyers, and also to rabbis’ Rubinstein and Dratch, request that Rabbi Kedmi be made to undergo appropriate counseling and that steps be taken to protect women from Rabbi Kedmi.
22. And that, in spite of "the mother’s" numerous correspondence, upon information and belief, rabbis’ Kedmi, Rubinstein and Dratch each refused to take any meaningful steps to address "the mother’s" concerns.
23. And that, upon learning "the mother" therefore planned to proceed with this lawsuit, Rabbi Kedmi’s response, relayed via his counsel, was to among other things, threaten "the mother" that he would file a claim for slander against her.
24. That any such claim for slander would be patently frivolous and that threat was clearly made in an effort to intimidate "the mother" into not seeking to hold Rabbi Kedmi accountable for his unlawful conduct.
25. That further, upon information and belief, Rabbi Rubinstein and other members of the clergy continue to recommend Rabbi Kedmi to perform circumcisions notwithstanding their full knowledge of his pattern of unlawful and outrageous conduct and continue therefor to knowingly and willfully place women and families in harm’s way.
AS AND FOR A FIRST CAUSE OF ACTION

27. That Rabbi Kedmi’s aforementioned touching of "the mother"was down without her consent and was intentional, offensive and wrongful, and therefore constitutes an intentional wrongful physical contact with her person without consent and was otherwise unlawful.
28. That "the mother" has suffered as a result of Rabbi Kedmi’s wrongful physical contact and battery that was committed against her person.

54-year-old, Bruria Keren, was arrested on charges of child sexual abuse and physical abuse of her twelve children. She has also been accused of cult like practices. Police suspect that the children were violently abused over the course of many years, including whippings with belts and electric cables. According to the Jerusalem Post, Keren is "the leader of a fringe sect of Jewish women with a Taliban-like dress code. . . The women who adhere to a dress code more stringent than that of the most extreme Muslim sects and a rigorous health food diet.
The followers of this sect/cult number as many as 50 in Beit Shemesh and are also scattered around Safed and Jerusalem. According to reports the women do not speak with men, even by telephone. The vast majority of the women who belong to the sect have secular backgrounds.
According to a Jerusalem Post article "Even in Beit Shemesh, made up of some of the most religiously extreme sects in Orthodoxy, such as Satmar, Toldot Aharon and Shomrei Hachomot, this group of women was considered ridiculously – even psychotically – zealous. .. The women who belong to the sect lack any recognized rabbinic backing. They rarely leave their homes. When they do, their female children, dressed in long robes, accompany them. The women’s extensive face coverings make it dangerous for them to cross the street unattended."
"This guy knows all the gossip, the ins and outs, the lashon hara of the Orthodox world. He’s an [expert] in... all the inner workings of the Orthodox world." (Rabbi Aaron Rakeffet-Rothkoff)
