Monthly Attendance Award

I drove my last mile home today behind a beat-up Nissan Pathfinder driven by a fat Latina woman. The back of the car had two bumperstickers that said: "My child won the Monthly Attendance Award at Martin Luther King Elementary School."

I can only imagine the pride of such a parent and the life trajectory of such a child burdened with such unduly high expectations.

Dot Indian

When asked to explain the symbolism of the bindi (the colored dot worn on the forehead of Indian women), V.S. Naipaul said: "The dot means: my head is empty." (Pg. 387)

I got into a discussion last night of young female artists on the prowl for a man to take care of them.

"Isn’t it the same for male artists (freelance writers in particular, my group)?" I was asked.

Well, no. I know very few men, if any, who are looking for a woman to financially provide for them. Most men would feel emasculated by that. A woman doesn’t feel defeminized when she seeks out a man to provide for her.

A man’s manliness is largely determined by his work. A woman’s femininity is not determined by her work.

In the late 1970s, Naipaul became obsessed with Islamic fundamentalism. He said it was a growing threat to the world, that the Iranian Islamic radicals did not want a revolution so much as an opportunity to kill their opponents and start a theocratic state.

He was right.

Naipaul wrote the book, "Among the Believers." "His thesis…was [that Islam was] innately imperialist, requiring its followers to diminish their native culture."

Quentin writes: "I can’t find the quote online, but if I can trust my memory, it was from a V.S. Naipaul interview. The author was asked how he thought the situation in the Middle East would end, and he said that it would end with "victory for one side and defeat for the other". The interviewer thought this sounded a bit harsh, to which Naipaul replied that he was not condoning the situation, that was simply what he saw."

I’m Starting To Find People Abrasive

Yes, even a rude crude bloke like me can find other people abrasive.

I must’ve changed. It must be all the Alexander Technique and yoga I’m doing. I feel different. I’m not as flip and as cynical. I no longer find the cynical pose as amusing as I once did.

Align The Heavenly Forces In Your Life

I don’t believe in astrology but I don’t deny its relevance either. I’m agnostic.

But one can’t be agnostic in the way one lives. You either live as God matters or you live as if God does not matter. You either live as if astrology matters or you live as if it does not.

I live as if it did not.

But my new rebbe Guru Singh says:

We are Mercury retrograde and in the midst of an extreme period between two eclipses. This is a time for only conscious action. Here is the subtler score: the New Moon Solar Eclipse of January 25-26, 2009 and the Full Moon Lunar Eclipse of February 9, 2009 connects with a Mars/ Saturn /Uranus link within the Moon and Jupiter locked on the 8th and 11th of February. Those two days do NOTHING but meditate and relax.

As this is a binary universe–for every action there is an equal reaction–the two weeks we are reviewing here are not only a time to watch out for, but also a moment of unique opportunity. It can greatly empower anything you truly focus your attention on.

Vishnu:  Visit me in India.

My Dad Turned 80 Today

He’s had a good innings. Three kids, two grandkids, thousands of people who adore him. He’s the subject of a flattering new biography.

I saw him a couple of months ago at Loma Linda University.

I haven’t been back to Australia since 2000 to see the rest of my family.

Is It Abuse When There’s Consent?

David Deutsch emails:

Luke, I’m flattered by what you said about preferring to be abused by me than praised by a milquetoast, but really, I love you as much as ever.

The only truly objectionable passage was your reference to how his mistresses must have accepted his abuse because he was a great writer. I think it fair to say that the vast majority of women being abused don’t stay with their abusers because the latter are brilliant, or clever or artistic, and I presume most of them are not. That Naipaul was a great writer doesn’t mean that in the comfort and privacy of his own abusive relationships he was tossing off bon mots as opposed to simply telling his current masturbation tool that her breasts were getting saggy and that a great man such as himself deserved a perkier pair. I’d have a lot more to say about all of this, but the best part of the posting was:

"I often say outrageous things, but I do this to start conversations, not to end them. If I am talking to someone I don’t care for, I usually won’t go to the bother of saying something outrageous."

Thus, I’m going to presume I don’t actually have to rant about how screwed up abusers and abusees are, because you doubtlessly already know (and nobody is more adept at self-abuse in all its forms as Luke Ford), and that this, to borrow from Elvis, is the wonder, the wonder of you.

I liked the thing about Trinidadian trash talking–I think you need to reclaim your black heritage. The next time people object to something you say, just speak authoritatively about how "In Trinidad, that’s just the way people" and let them fill in the blanks.

But the highest praise I can offer is that I’ve reached the age of 39 without either reading or wanting to read Naipaul, and now I want to.

Shane Warne The Musical II

I sat next to an Aussie in shul on Shabbos.

He’s seen "Shane Warne The Musical." He said it was shmutzy.

"What do you expect?" I said.

He said he was at a breakfast a few years ago where Shane Warne came in after partying all night and with a cigarette in one hand, gave an amusing speech. Then that day at the MCG, Shane took seven wickets!

Shame that propriety kept Warne from captaining Australia.

Without His Mistress Margaret, There Would’ve Been No Great Naipaul Novels After 1970

Was Naipaul’s great writing worth the sin of his passionate illicit relationship with Margaret of Argentina?

Perhaps what I need to spark my writing is a good affair. Such a shame I am so moral, so corralled by the Holy Torah.

Naipaul says about meeting Margaret when he was 40: "I was passionately looking for sensual fulfillment, but passionately, and when it came it was wonderful, and I will never run it down. All the later books in a way to some extent depend on her. They stopped being dry… The books stopped being dry after Margaret, and it was a great liberation… Nothing was missing. The world was complete for me."

I’m reading the latest triumph by Patrick French: "The World is What it is: The Authorized Biography of V.S. Naipaul"

The vice of the English working class is fornication, of the middle class it is adultery and of the upper class, it is incest.

As for my life, it is but grim duty. I buy the meanest kisses at famine prices. (Thomas Hardy)

Naipaul said about his affair that it killed his wife: "I was liberated. She was destroyed. It was inevitable."

"Margaret was Vidia’s ideal woman, a woman of a kind who had existed previously only in his fantasy life: he could string her along and mistreat her, with her abject consent."

An Italian friend, Marisa Masters, told Vidia not to leave his wife. To have an affair instead. "I tell him I understand a writer needs to get a bit of knowledge."

"Margaret gave him sensual fulfillment, Pat the cerebral equivalent. Like Graham Greene and Catherine Watson, they would meet in unlikely locations around the world for sex and excitement while the travelling writer went about his business."

"She said he should not think she would be willing to hop over to England every few months to satisfy his carnal desires, although she rued the fact that only he seemed to be capable of satisfying hers."

"No other man could give her the sensations he gave her. She said she had done things to Vido that would have made her sick with anybody else, and yet she still longed for the time when she could do them again."
