Reason & Religion

Jeff emails: The Litvaks were not more “rational” than the Chassidim, in fact, the Gra and R. Haim were major league Kabbalists, the Gra wrote more on Kabbala than he did on Talmud, and we have R. Haim Brisker’s kavvanot hatefila extant. In fact, there’s a famous story about the time the Alter Rebbe was to meet the Gra, and he famously said that he wasn’t afraid of the Gra on halacha, but on sod (Kabbala). It was the Gra who brought back Luzzatto, for example, still strong in Litvak circles, and a more heavy duty mystic than that we do not have in the Jewish tradition.

The Rambam also is not more “rational”, rather, he was a Rationalist, which means a different thing, it means that he believed one could understand Gd by use of the mind. The idea of Judaism as “rational” in the common usage comes from Mendelsohnn, in his polemic in favor of Judaism in Germany.

Tough Times For European Jews

BERLIN (JTA) — European leaders must intervene to save small Jewish communities from an anti-Semitic onslaught, the head of the European Jewish Congress said.

In a statement issued Thursday, Moshe Kantor said European Jewish communities are in “grave danger” from the anti-Semitism, some of it officially sanctioned, as made clear by recent sensational anti-Semitic incidents in Belgium and Sweden.

Kantor, who is hosting a conference in Dubrovnik, Croatia, later this month on best practices for combating racism and xenophobia, said European Union and European leaders should “launch a campaign against intolerance and anti-Semitism to remind European citizens that the new Europe was established after the Second World War on the concept of ‘Never Again.”’

DAVID DEUTSCH EMAILS: But why aren’t you speaking out about real issues, Kelsey–like the PC Armageddon against this New Zealand tv host who had the misfortune of laughing at Indian politician Sheila Dikshit’s last name.

You’re off the hook, Luke, since I don’t expect you to defend a Kiwi. Incidentally, I had a bunch of Aussie Chabadniks over l’chaims on Simchas Torah, lovely fellows.

LUKE SAYS: “What are you guys doing to help suicidal gay teens?”

DAVID KELSEY: “I was figuring that for the girls, you would offer reparative therapy.”

DAVID DEUTSCH: “I think that the best I can do for them is present an image of heterosexual masculinity so grotesque that they’ll embrace their sexual identity as a blessing.”

Kudos to Obama’s Brother

Chaim Amalek emails: Subject: Coming soon to America (Once Again, Islam Shows the Way)

Kudos to the President’s 52 year old muslim brother in Kenya. I’ll bet you can’t get away with that in Thailand.

From AP: NAIROBI, Kenya – President Barack Obama’s polygamist half brother in Kenya has married a woman who is more than 30 years younger than him.

The 19-year-old’s mother told The Associated Press on Friday she is furious that her daughter quit high school and married the 52-year-old.

Mary Aoko Ouma says her daughter tried to marry Malik Obama two years ago, but the mother says she wouldn’t give permission.

Malik Obama, who is Muslim, has two other wives. Polygamy is legal in Kenya if it falls under religious or cultural traditions.

In an interview broadcast by Kenya’s NTV that was filmed without his knowledge, Malik Obama says he married the 19-year-old but didn’t say when.

H1: Walk Out
Prager H1: Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Behar walk out on their own show when Bill O’Reilly has the temerity to assert that Muslims perpetrated the 9/11 terror attack… Dennis talks Ruth McClung, a real life rocket scientist who decided to enter politics and run for Congress in the 7th district of Arizona against one of the most liberals members in the House. Can Sarkozy pull a Thatcher?

Friday, October 15, 2010 Radio Show
H2: Happiness Hour: In the Wilderness
Prager H2: The nature of life is to wander in the proverbial wilderness. That “wilderness” can take many forms – career, spiritual, relationships. Sometimes we find a way out; sometimes we don’t. Even Moses didn’t make it to the Promised Land. But how we come to terms with this idea is a key to living a happier life.

Friday, October 15, 2010 Radio Show
H3: Open Lines
Prager H3: Per usual, callers set the agenda. Issues raised include: are people on the Left brainwashed; does Dennis prefer New York City or Los Angeles: is it harder to raise children now than it was 20 years ago; is peace possible in the Middle East; should a couple take government money so that the mother can stay home to raise their child.

Rocket Scientist Runs for Congress

Dennis talks to Ruth McClung. She’s running for Congress in the 7th district of Arizona. The woman is literally a rocket scientist. Her opponent is one of the most liberal members of Congress, a man who actually asked people to boycott his own state. You can help her here.

Transgender (Transexual) Golfer Sues LPGA

The LPGA rule is that you only compete in their events if you were born a woman. Ms. Lawless says this is bigoted. But if you follow PC logic, how can she be wrong?

Joe Miller for Senate, Alaska

Dennis talks to Joe Miller, Republican candidate for Senate in Alaska. He’s in a tough race with the woman he beat in the Republican primary, Lisa Murkowski. She’s running a sour grapes write-in campaign. You can help Joe here. We can’t let this man lose. He’s too good.

Even the Mighty Washington Post Is Cowed

Another “Mohammed” cartoon is pulled. Wimps!

Kyl: Straightforward Economic Reform

The party of no? No, the party of low taxes, fewer regulations. Dennis talks to Arizona Senator Kyl, the Minority Whip, who has written a clear explanation of the Republican position in today’s Wall Street Journal.

It’s A Beautiful World

I’ve been feeling pretty crook the past week.

The last time I left the house was Friday afternoon for my much-needed psycho-therapy.

Thursday afternoon Joey Kurtzman came over for some Torah talk and then he took me to dinner at Nana.

I felt overwhelmed by the variety of colors and female specimens. I sat quietly at my table modestly munching on my avocado and feta cheese sandwich and all around me were these amazing female creatures. I felt happy. I had forgotten what a beautiful world it is.

That’s easy to do when my Dallas Cowboys — Super Bowl favorites — are 1-3.

First, Craigslist Came For The Prostitutes

And I remained silent. I was not a prostitute..

When Craigslist came for the hate speech,
I remained silent;
I wasn’t a hater.

Then Craigslist flagged and removed my posting in Gigs for “Wanted: “Hot Chix For Torah Talk!”

There was no one left to speak out.

I do a lot of Torah Talks with blokes but my heart really lies with talking Torah with hot chicks, preferably hot chicks who don’t have boyfriends. Knowledge of Torah is preferred for this position but not necessary. Please email me and include your credentials (as far as hotness). [email protected]

Luke Again Named “The Los Angeles Orthodox Community’s Most Eligible Bachelor”

AP Wire – For the second consecutive year lukeford.net has named its own webmaster, Luke Ford, as “The Los Angeles Orthodox Community’s Most Eligible Bachelor”.

News of the award reached Ford as he finished his pm shift at the Starbucks on La Cienega. “I am truly humbled by this great honor. I praise the selection committee’s wisdom and bravery in granting me this title, not once, but twice,” said a tearful Ford.

Luke Ford’s previous awards include Hustler Magazine’s Asshole of the Month for December 1999 and aljazeera.net’s Most Blasphemous Book of 2005.

Rabbi Shifren Endorsed by Sharron Angle

The Jewish Chronicle of London reports:

An American rabbi will join an extreme right-wing anti-Islamic-fundamentalist group in a protest outside the Israeli Embassy in London next week.

Rabbi Nachum Shifren, from California, said he was supporting the English Defence League because he opposed multiculturalism, and promised to act with “full force” against shariah law.

But his plans have been roundly criticised by Jewish community organisations. The Community Security Trust said that Jews who believed they could shape the EDL, or find shelter in the group, were “utterly deluded”.

Board of Deputies chief executive Jon Benjamin said: “Rabbi Shifren displays breathtaking naivety and ignorance in associating himself with the EDL and in the way he characterises the British Jewish community.

“Whatever the dangers of radicalisation in the UK, they apply just as much to the right as to the left and to Islamism.”

Rabbi Shifren emails:

“Hello Pasadena Patriots:
Last night at our strategy meeting at the Green Hotel, we had the pleasure of listening to a passionate American Patriot, Rabbi Nachum Shifren, speak to us briefly about his candidacy for the California State Senate Seat – 26th District. After his talk, he received a rousing standing ovation by everyone in attendance. He is a model of the values and goals of Pasadena Patriots TEA PAC.

The good Rabbi left no doubt about his passion and love for America and its traditional values, freedom and liberty. He is a true American warrior and the only California public office candidate who is speaking-out publicly about the danger of Shariah Law being imposed on America by the Muslim Brotherhood, whose long-term objective is to abrogate / usurp the U.S. Constitution.

I would like to ask everyone who reads this blog help Rabbi Shifren anyway you can. If you know anyone who lives in his LA-area District (Hancock Park, Culver City, West LA areas) please let them know about his candidacy and his website below, following the article from “The Iconoclast”.
Thank you!”

Is Rabbi Nachum Shifren an “extremist”? – by Jerry Gordon

Rabbi Nachum Shifren, known as the ‘surfing Rabbi’, is a candidate for a California Senate Seat in District 26 in West Los Angeles. He is an Orthodox Rabbi, a product of the Chabad Movement that captured his attention at UC Santa Barbara and lead to his spiritual conversion. He ran away from his San Fernando home at age 12 to Malibu and became enamored of watching the strength and grace of surfers. He ultimately became a Los Angeles County lifeguard, surfer and an accomplished triathelete.

As he told us in a recent interview, he is the only declared California State Senate candidate who has come out against Sharia. He has spoken at Tea Party and Republican conventions. He considers members of the Tea Party movement and other Republicans as “the salt of the earth”. They are concerned about the direction in which the country is heading in under the Obama Administration. Among his admirers is Nevada GOP US Senate candidate, Sharron Angle who heard him speak at a national GOP meeting in Reno.

But in the midst of the final weeks of his California Senate campaign he is traveling to the UK to show solidarity with the anti-Islamic English Defense League. This has caused The U.K. Guardian to portray Shifren as part of an international web involving the US Tea Party Movement and the anti-Sharia cause. That in turn has made the British Jewish establishment uneasy about Rabbi Shifren’s appearances and speeches in Britain. But privately that is Shifren’s objective in making this trip to the UK.

He said as much in this quote from The Guardian Observer ‘investigation’:
Shifren, a Californian senate candidate, said Britain’s Jewish community should rally behind the EDL: “The Jewish community is paralyzed with fear, exactly what most radical Muslim agitators want. The people of England are in the forefront of this war – and it is a war. One of the purposes of this visit is to put the kibosh on the notion in the Jewish community that they cannot co-operate with the EDL, which is rubbish.”

This is far from his origins as a surfing San Fernando Valley guy who worked in the McGovern campaign in 1972. He frequently quotes Churchill about the transformation of liberal youth to conservative adulthood: “If you’re not a liberal at twenty you have no heart, if you’re not a conservative at forty you have no brain.”

In 1991 he was able to secure teaching credentials in the Los Angeles school system because of his special skill, he could speak Spanish. That lead to a 22 year stint in what he characterized as a dysfunctional Los Angeles school system contending with Hispanic and African American gangs. Among his supporters in the California State Senate race are African American pastors who recognize his valued contributions during his career as an educator.

So is Rabbi Shifren an ‘extremist’. I think the answer can be found in the famed quote from the late Conservative and Libertarian Sen. Barry Goldwater in his 1964 GOP Convention Presidential nomination acceptance speech: “I would remind you that extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice! And let me remind you also that moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue!”
Why is Sharia Law relevant to voters in my district?

If we lose our freedom and individual liberties, if our culture becomes deleted and transformed into an alien apparition where our lives hearken back to a Middle Age darkness, all the great jobs and opportunities in the world are for naught. REMEMBER: Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and Iran have FULL EMPLOYMENT, WITH PLENTY OF BENEFITS!!

The video below will show my dedication to our Constitution and my fight to keep California, and America, free and safe:

Anti-Children?

From DennisPrager.com:

Thursday, October 14, 2010 Radio Show
H1: Anti-Children
Prager H1: Joy Behar accuses Congressman Michele Bachmann of being anti-children because she opposes legislation that provides health care for poor children. Never mind that Bachmann has five children and has foster-parented 23 others. She opposes a policy that Behar supports, therefore she’s anti-children. This is how the Left argues… Dennis talks to Joe Miller, Republican candidate for Senate in Alaska. He’s in a tough race with sour grapes, write-in candidate, Lisa Murkowski.

Thursday, October 14, 2010 Radio Show
H2: Big Off the Tee
Prager H2: Should a man who has had a sex change operation and is now a woman be allowed to compete in LPGA events?… The President rails against Republicans accusing them of being against everything good. So much for being the Great Uniter. You expect him to be a cheerleader for his team, but has a president ever been as a partisan as this one?
