I Have More Friends In Porn Than In Torah

Whenever I wanted to catch a ride to Las Vegas for the Adult Entertainment Expo, it was never a problem. I always had several rides to choose from. There were always people I could stay with at various hotels on the strip for the convention. There were even attractive young women who wanted to sleep with me.

But I can’t find anyone who wants to give me a ride to LimmudLA.

I am truly a loser.

I have a bad case of Premature LimmudLA Anxiety.

Make it a crime to be lonely or sad.

One-Itis

Neil Strauss writes: "It’s a disease AFCs (Average Frustrated Chumps) get: They become obsessed with a girl they’re neither dating nor sleeping with, and then start acting so needy and nervous around her that htey end up driving her away. The cure for one-itis, PUAs (Pick-Up Artists) like to say, is to go out and have sex with a dozen other girls — and then see if this flower is still so special."

That sounds horrible but it is true. Whenever I fall in love with a girl, it never ends well. Just witness all my mooning over Danielle Berrin!

I drove around the Museum of Tolerance today and checked out the angry signs.

Orit Arfa: They

Orit Arfa writes this singles column for the Feb. 14, 2008 issue of the Jewish Journal:

Note to men: Flattery always works. He got my full attention. He introduced himself as Guy, and, with my full blessing, began to psychoanalyze me. He told me that I looked out of place and that my demeanor was unapproachable, intimidating, even condescending. I agreed that at times I can be snobby, so he advised me to start giving people a chance, to stop judging people superficially. He announced that he has special intuitive powers — it runs in his Tunisian family — and that he could foresee that if I didn’t lower my dating standards, I’d end up very alone. He took his forecast a step further by telling me that if he were to take me out to dinner, he’d have to put on "boxing gloves" — for I’m not easy — but he’s ready for the challenge. I’m not necessarily his physical type, but I intrigued him.

Hmm, maybe I should put on a disguise and fly to Jerusalem and rescue Orit Arfa from spinsterhood.

I think my only chance with Orit is to cozy up to her parents, loyal Luke Ford readers (Carmalith Arfa worked at Harkham Hillel for 25 years).

Many rabbis wonder how I can make love to so many different women on my website.

Well, the Torah helped me overcome my fears of intimacy to the point where I can now court two women at once, Baruch HaShem!

Thank You Leon Merker!

I sometimes despair at ever finding a woman to love.

Well, on the second to last page of this week’s Jewish Journal, a bloke named Leon Merker, who’s no looker, has a gorgeous bird on his arm (Abby Firstenberg).

They’re engaged.

If Leon can do it, I can do it!

The Wonderful Reality Of Mogen David

The worst singles events I’ve ever attended were at Mogen David more than a decade ago.

I can’t complain. Some good people were trying to do good things.

It was our failure as lonely pathetic single Jews.

Daniel Langburn, a Mogen David member, writes the Jewish Journal:

David Suissa has artfully told the story of Congregation Mogen David’s "Saturday Night Live" learning experience for fathers and sons ("Detail of the Week," Feb. 8).

Yet there is even another powerful story behind this remarkable gathering. This synagogue founded by Rabbi Abram I. Maron has been a traditional Ashkenazic congregation since its beginnings more than 100 years ago. When Rabbi Gabriel Elias, its associate rabbi and executive director for 19 years, became the principal rabbi six years ago, he realized that this institution needed an infusion of new families if it was to grow and regain its former vibrant self after a number of years of declining membership. He had a significant vision that Sephardic and Askenazic Jews could coexist at this spacious though underused building. He brought Sephardic Jews to the shul.

This harmonious mixture indicates that what divides us, as Jews from different parts of the world with divergent customs, is insignificant to the fact that we are all one people. The great experiment that Rabbi Elias started, and that many said would not work, has become a wonderful reality.

Chai Center rabbi explains ‘off the handle’ e-mails

I’ve known of Schwartzie for about 20 years from Dennis Prager’s lectures.

When I came to L.A., I was excited to meet Rabbi Shlomo Schwartz and he was everything Prager promised and more.

Schwartzie loves Judaism and he reaches out to lonely misfits such as myself and steers us towards a Jewish refuge.

Thus, I was shocked when a couple of friends of mine reported horrible exchanges they had with Schwartzie.

One friend wanted to bring his non-Jewish girlfriend (who was considering conversion to Orthodox Judaism, she eventually did) to a Passover seder hosted by Schwartzie. The rabbi told my friend that he didn’t want any shiksas at his seder.

My friend was appalled.

Another friend was getting divorced. He reports that Schwartzie told him, "You might as well take your kids outside and shoot them. It will destroy them."

The Jewish Journal reports this week:

At 62, Schwartzie is enormously popular and beloved. A defiantly independent and off-beat character, he can schmooze it up with Hollywood types or go green with millennial do-gooders. His long white beard gives him a look that is both rabbinic and grandfatherly; his untethered vernacular and quirky style make it clear he fits no mold.

His hallmark event is Dinner for 60 Strangers, which he and his wife, Olivia, host every Friday night in their home.

And it was that Shabbat event that attracted Jamie Katz (not her real name), a 42-year-old paralegal and entrepreneur.

Katz was on an emotional mission to deepen her Jewish identity. When her mother was dying a year ago, she had a last request for her daughter: Go explore your Jewish heritage. Join a temple, find a Jewish man.

Jamie’s mother, who was Japanese, had converted to Judaism some 45 years before, when she married Jamie’s father. Katz and her two brothers had studied at Temple Emanuel religious school in Beverly Hills, and while she says she never felt like she completely fit in as a Japanese Jew, she never considered herself anything but Jewish.

A few weeks ago a friend told her about the Chai Center, so she went online and registered for the Shabbat dinner at the Schwartzes’ home. The food was great, the atmosphere was warm and inviting, and Katz felt as if she belonged.

The following Sunday, however, she received an e-mail from Schwartzie that felt like a verbal punch in the gut:

"Altho yr surname is [Katz] & U spk Yiddish, thts still does not make yr mother’s NON Orthodox ‘conversion’ kosher [valid]," he wrote to her. "Tht means tht if U ever met a Jewish man who’s family Rabbi was Orthodox or, who wanted 2 get married in Israel, U could NOT! … I appreciate tht U were ‘brought up’ as a Jew (even tho yr father ‘married’ out of the faith ), but U may not come 2 any more Chai Center events…. We consider INTERMARRAIGE a grt tragedy for the Jewish ppl, even if the non Jewish person in the equation thinks & feels Jewish…. In the eyes of Al-mighty G*d, it’s important 4 U NOT 2 date Jewish men. The result of which could, G-d forbid, end in grt tragedy, 4 both of U."

Shocked and pained, Katz wrote back to Schwartzie, reiterating her commitment to Judaism. In the escalating exchange, Schwartzie castigated Katz’s late father for choosing to marry a non-Jew, and about Katz’s recently deceased mother, he wrote: "She might have been agrt mother, but as a ‘Jewish’ mother she was a miserable failure! In truth she really was not a FAILURE as a Jew; since, in the eyes of G-d (where it COUNTS) she wasn’t!"

Katz was crushed.

In addition to Katz, two other women independently sent to the Jewish Journal samples of Schwartzie’s letters — rambling e-mails in large print, heavy with text-message shorthand punctuated with varied text colors, point sizes and fonts. One recipient, who is not Jewish, attended his Rosh Hashanah services last fall with a Jewish friend and followed up by sending the rabbi a question about her Jewish ex-boyfriend. Another woman, who is Jewish, brought a non-Jewish man to Schwartzie’s seder in 2005. Filled with foul language and content that can easily be construed as bigoted, sexist and threatening, the e-mails seem to contradict the rabbi’s aura of openness and non-judgmental warmth.

In a face-to-face interview, Schwartzie stood his ground when first confronted with the letters. He said that while he regretted language that may have been perceived as a personal attack, he stood by his goal of sounding an intentionally vicious warning to ward off non-Jews who might infiltrate his events in the hopes of ensnaring a Jewish partner and eventually intermarrying.

Jackie Campbell (not her real name), who is not Jewish, was invited by her Jewish neighbor to attend Schwartzie’s Rosh Hashanah services last fall at the Writers Guild Theater.

A graduate of Berkeley who has published research on breast cancer and Eastern medicine and now produces children’s health and exercise videos, Campbell wrote to Schwartzie to follow up on a comment he had made about Jewish astrology. In her e-mail, she told Schwartzie that her father’s father was Jewish, and she also asked the rabbi for "words of wisdom" about her Jewish ex-boyfriend, whom she had recently broken up with when she realized he wouldn’t marry a non-Jew.

Schwartzie wrote back:

"A paternal grandpapy does not make U a Jew. Get used 2 it & get used 2 the program; its called the Reality of truth, even if it disturbs yr comfort zone. It is really low space morally & ethically of you 2 cast aspersions on Jews & their religion bcz they tell the truth. U R not a Jew even if tht means tht U lose yr boy toy," read part of his long tirade to her.

Campbell said the e-mails deeply disturbed her and embarrassed her Jewish friends, who assured her he did not represent Judaism. She wrote that to Schwartzie in answer to his e-mail.

Schwartzie responded:

"How dare U B so nervy as 2 criticize me when U r the brazen hussy slut chasing after Jewish men (even when they R Orthodox & you KNOW tht it is against their G-d & religion). Shame on U 4 yr disgusting unpaid whoring ways 2 try & take Jewish men away from Jewish women. Hitler murdered Jews & U R also trying 2 exterminate Jews."

If you believe that God gave the Torah, you can argue with the way Schwartzie expressed himself, but the gist of what he said and did is totally congruent with Torah. Orthodox Judaism has standards that are more important for Orthodox Jews than being nice to goyim.

Fred emails: "I don’t see why this guy just doesn’t advocate an orthodox conversion instead of going off the deep end? Clearly that should suffice."

Khunrum emails: "Have any of the Advisory Committee seen that show "Marrying a Millionaire" (something like that). There’s the head Yiddisha Yenta who matches (alleged) High Rollers with (alleged) Desirable Women. Most of the chicks are canines. Most of the "millionaires" seem to be as well positioned as Luke. The show is hilarious, check it out!"

Jewish school accused on admissions

From JTA:

A prestigious Jewish school in London was accused of discrimination for refusing to accept the daughter of a convert.

The JFS, formerly known as the Jewish Free School, rejected the application of a girl whose mother is a convert to Judaism and a teacher in the school, the Times of London reported Tuesday. Her father is an Orthodox Jew.

The office of the chief rabbi, which acts as the school’s religious authority, does not recognize the mother’s conversion, which took place more than 20 years ago under the auspices of the same office.

The parents, David and Kate Lightman, say the north London school has violated British race laws and have requested a judicial review in the High Court regarding the admissions policy of the school, the largest Orthodox Jewish school in Europe with about 2,000 students.

The Times reported that children from two other families were refused admission based on questions about conversions. The school, which receives government funding, says the refusals were based on religion, not race.

The Lightmans have been battling for admission on behalf of their daughter, now 13, for four years.

The Jewish Journal Has Passed Its Quota On ‘Silencing The Left’ Cover Stories

This week it is crafted thus: "The L.A. Battle For Israel’s Survival. Hawks seize the limelight as the Doves fight to be heard."

On Sept. 27, 2002, it read: "The Silencing of the Left? How the quest for a united front may quash the debate on Israel."

Maybe the only thing silencing the Left in Jewish life is reality? The Left doesn’t like the facts of life. One fact of life is that Israel is a beautiful country surrounded barbaric countries. Another fact of life is that Jews who observe Judaism tend not to be liberal and tend to have a much higher quality of life than everyone else. They have more solid marriages, less drug and alcohol abuse, less violent crime and child delinquency, more education and are more charitable with one another.

The less rooted people are, the fewer bonds they have with others, the more likely they are to vote Democract. Republicans tend to be married, to have kids, to go to church or synagogue regularly. The success of the Democractic party depends on destroying marriages and community (because voters for the Democrats are far less likely to be married, to belong to close-knit religious communities, etc). Women who don’t have husbands for Democrats so the state can be their proxy husband and keep them safe.

When Rob Eshman’s paper complains that the Left has "fight to be heard," what he really means is that he often has to fight to be heard and he gets tired and wonders if it is all worth it.

What Are You Doing To Celebrate Black History Month?

Khunrum emails: "Booger Black History month….I’m fuming that Spielberg has dropped out of the Olympics because of the "suffering in Darfur" without mentioning the suffering in Burma where military thugs have been repressing Democracy for years. The missus, (Ms. SOpee) and I visited Myanmar last year only to find ramped misery. After we returned, there was the wholesale massacre of democracy protestors and Buddhist monks. So we should feel bad about Africans but not Asians?. I’m appalled. Free Aung San Suu Kyi from house arrest. Free Burma ….Only Sly Stallone has taken an interest in this outrage…check the latest installment of RAMBO."

Holly Randall Goes To Shul

Since our fling in late 2005 and early 2006, I’ve often hoped that erotic photographer Holly Randall would give up her profession and become my Jewish wife. We just fit together so well. (Don’t have a dirty mind!)

Thursday afternoon, we had this:

HollyRandall: I want to do a portrait of you
HollyRandall: though not sure when
Luke: I would be greatly honored
Luke: you know i’d love it
HollyRandall: even if i shot it in your hovel
Luke: i’d love to get your help with my photography too
HollyRandall: ?
HollyRandall: when is the light coming through your window the strongest?
Luke: if you could look at some of my pics and tell me what I’m doing wrong and how better to crop.edit them
HollyRandall: why would i do that?
HollyRandall: i thought your identity lies with the COD
HollyRandall: and i’m also embarking on a new project where i have to write more
HollyRandall: would you allow me to attend shul with you and write about it?
HollyRandall: i won’t tell anyone at shul what i do
Luke: sure, a shul, not my shul.
HollyRandall: hmm
HollyRandall: well let’s talk about that later
Luke: ok
HollyRandall: that project isn’t coming up especially soon
Luke: this will be fun
Luke: you know i’ll love it
HollyRandall: the photo?
HollyRandall: hehe
HollyRandall: lol i hope so
Luke: squiring you around jewish life
HollyRandall: i suddenly want to shoot some independent photo projects
Luke: maybe we’ll go to a gay shul?
HollyRandall: really?
HollyRandall: they have those?
Luke: yes
HollyRandall: that would be awesome
HollyRandall: what about a cross dressing shul?
Luke: ok
HollyRandall: and you can wear a dress
HollyRandall: that would be awesome
HollyRandall: story of the century
Luke: hmm, I wont do that, there aren’t cross-dressing shuls as far as I know, but there are surely cross-dressing events thrown by liberal jews
Luke: but I wont cross-dress
Luke: read that
HollyRandall: aww c’mon
HollyRandall: where’s the fun cross-dressing Luke i used to know?
Luke: lol
Luke: to think all the time i was with you, i was trying to get you to shul… now my dreams have come true!
Luke: this is better than a blowjob
Luke: i’m going to a weekend of non-stop jewish classes at costa mesa hilton
Luke: it’s like the AEE but jewish, will pack my levitra
HollyRandall: ahahah
HollyRandall: i’m reading that article you read me
HollyRandall: wow, is the jewish community the last place where "racism" is allowed?
Luke: do you understand it is a clash of tradition and other values? it’s beautiful.
HollyRandall: but you’re not a "real Jew" according to this guy
Luke: yes, in traditional judaism, because other values are more important…though a black or yellow jew is as much a member of the tribe as a white one
Luke: yes I am if I am Orthodox
Luke: it means you can’t do a cheapie conversion and immediately expect all the benefits of being a member
HollyRandall: how did she do a "cheapie" conversion?
HollyRandall: she was raised jewish
Luke: we should have a nice kosher dinner or lunch and talk about all this
HollyRandall: right
Luke: her mom did
Luke: Orthodox conversion — difficult. Other types of Jewish conversions = easy.
HollyRandall: but her mom converted
Luke: but not orthodox, she did a cheapie
HollyRandall: christ
Luke: you can’t take the easy way out and expect respect and no consequences
HollyRandall: so in order for someone to convert to judaism and be accepted, they would HAVE to convert to orthodox judaism?
Luke: yes, if they want respect and acceptance from the Orthodox. If you want to join a group…
HollyRandall: and don’t you struggle with being accepted as a jew, even though you converted to orthodox?
Luke: yes, but my struggles are almost entirely because I have chosen to publicly and flagrantly violate the norms of Orthodoxy.
Luke: no group will accept that
Luke: I did the same thing in porn.
HollyRandall: but Schwartzie’s center advocates: "All our activities are for Conservative, Reform, nonaffiliates, & any Jew that moves! They require no prior background for your total enjoyment," the center’s tagline reads.
HollyRandall: it seems that he contradicts that
Luke: yes, but that is for Jews. If you did not convert Orthodox, you are not a Jew in Orthodox eyes.
Luke: it’s complex.
Luke: you can’t intuit judaism.
Luke: it’s the opposite of modernity in many ways.
Luke: that’s what makes it fascinating.
Luke: it’s not cuddly and easy to like
