What Do I Need To Do To Get Back Into Young Israel of Century City/Beth Jacob?

I’m sick and when I’m sick I tend to write more honestly than normal. Less bravado and more heart.

Not a day goes by without my longing to return to the shuls I used to haunt. Particularly I want to go to Daf Yomi (a page of Talmud a day) and attend lectures. I love to learn.

So why did I get kicked out of Beth Jacob and Young Israel of Century City and Aish HaTorah? Because I was writing on the porn industry and it creeped people out. Also, because of my behavior more than a decade ago (I chased chicks aggressively).

So is my behavior today completely congruent with my stated wish to return to the fold? No. I’d say about one in five of my blog posts would creep out the average member of YICC/Beth Jacob.

I want to return to the fold but I also want to be a free on my website (and elsewhere, but let’s not get into that right now).

I want to get married and have kids. I want to form close bonds with people I respect but I also want to be free to blog my heart out. I yearn for intimacy and when I get it, I sometimes want to retreat from it. I fear that if I returned to the fold, my freedom to write would be considerably constricted.

So I live on the edge. On the margins, I make choices to move towards Orthodoxy by not allowing myself to do things I want to do and other times I choose to do things that take me away from that goal.

It’s like a relationship with a woman. Is it just for fun? Do you split when things are no longer fun? Are you just friends or are you exploring a permanent commitment?

Since I quit writing on porn last October, I’ve started to form more bonds with Orthodox Jews. They’re bringing me into their lives and giving me a chance and giving me work.

I’m on the right path.

People Who Are Infectious Shouldn’t Go Out In Public

I came down with some nasty cold or flu yesterday and couldn’t go to shul today.

I went to shul to daven Wednesday evening and ran into a friend. He wouldn’t shake my hand because he was sick. So he sat down next to me and davened with me for half an hour. Twenty four hours later, I’d come down with the same thing he had.

I hate it when people go to shul sick and spread their dirty little diseases. Why do they do it? Does God want them to spread illness? I hate that. It’s not erotic for me to daven at shul next to guys wheezing and hacking and spitting and spraying their mucuous everywhere.

For the first two days of a cold, you’re infectious. So stay home.

Bush Aide Tim Goeglein Resigns Over Plagiarism

Goeglein, who says he never did anything without Karl Rove’s permission, made the calls that got journalist Evan Gahr fired.

From the Washington Post:

WACO, Tex, Feb. 29 — An aide to President Bush responsible for outreach to conservative and Christian groups resigned Friday after acknowledging that he had plagiarized material for a column he wrote for his hometown paper in Fort Wayne, Ind.

Special assistant Tim Goeglein admitted lifting material from an essay about college education by former Dartmouth professor Jeffrey L. Hart and presenting it as his own in a guest column Thursday for the Fort Wayne News-Sentinel. Other allegations of plagiarism quickly surfaced after Goeglein informed White House officials of the situation Friday morning, and by day’s end he said he would step down.

On its Web site Friday, the newspaper said 20 of 38 Goeglein columns between 2000 and 2008 contained "portions copied from other sources without attribution." News-Sentinel Editor Kerry Hubartt said Goeglein had written 80 or 90 columns for the newspaper in a relationship that began more than 20 years ago.

Among the writers whose work was allegedly plagiarized were Washington Post book critic Jonathan Yardley, Wall Street Journal Deputy Editor George Melloan and New York Times reporter James Sterngold, according to Hubartt.

"Today, Tim accepted responsibility for the columns published under his name in his local newspaper, and has apologized for not upholding the standards expected by the President," White House press secretary Dana Perino said in a statement. "The President was disappointed to learn of the matter, and he was saddened for Tim and his family. He has long appreciated Tim’s service, and he knows him to be a good person who is committed to his country."

Good Fences Make Good Neighbors

Mickey Kaus writes:

1) Border control advocates want an actual physical fence.

2) Respectable Bush comprehensivist types like Chertoff want to substitute a sophisticated hi-tech "virtual fence" for the crude actual physical fence.

3) Border control types say the "virtual fence" won’t work.

4) Respectable Bush comprehensivists like Chertoff in fact cut back on actual fencing, choosing the "virtual fence."

5) Where it’s installed, the actual fence works.

6) Where it’s installed, the "virtual fence" doesn’t work .

7) Chertoff feels sorry for himself ("I thought I heard myself getting roundly criticized … as squishy and soft").

Harkham Hillel Hebrew Academy Update

Joe emails: "Morey Levovitz, Rabbi Baruch Sufrin and now Terry Moore (consultant hired by Morey) hold secret meetings in cooperation with the current school president Michael Fallas. Terry Moore is the consultant who infuriated the parents at the town hall meeting to explain his plan to change the bylaws. His Starbucks comment was: If you do not like it do not shop here. That really won over the parent body to the point that all the parents realized he was Morey’s man sent in to do his work while Morey was conspicuously absent and unable to be questioned by the parent body. The parents remember all too well Morey’s meltdown when challenged and questioned at the last townhall meeting."

Orthodox Rabbis Of Pico/Robertson: Don’t Stop Believing!

I’ve made a tribute video.

It’s the least I could for those who have given us so much.

Many of you must wonder how I make such amazing multi-media creations. I use camstudio.org. It’s free. It’s awesome. It’s easy. It’s just like my aishet chayil (woman of valor).

Teresa Strasser Engaged!

Teresa Strasser writes:

There’s nothing more smug and insidious than a girl who has finally fallen in love and thinks she now has all the answers. She can save you from your sad, pathetic, damaged love life and cure you of your nasty man-repellant habits. No matter what condescending tip she’s giving you, it always drips with the self-satisfied knowledge that the spinster bullet she so artfully dodged is headed straight for you.

I hate that girl.

I can’t turn into her, and maybe that’s why I haven’t written for the past nine months, since I met and fell in love with the first man I’ve ever been sure about. When it finally happened, it felt much more like dumb luck than brilliant man maneuvering. More dice than poker. I can’t be gloating all the way to the altar because the fact is, I’m just a girl who left the house one Saturday night to have dinner with her girlfriends, saw a cute guy across the room and hit the jackpot.

The only magical insight I can share with you has to do with the leaving the house part. Even Eli Manning can’t throw a touchdown if he doesn’t break out of the huddle. That’s really all I can tell you for sure.

There’s always been a special place in my grudge greenhouse for those who peddle the idea that finding love is a skill that can be graphed, taught and sold. Books about love seem like a whole lot of mess to me, written largely by groovy grifters.

Teresa is the first female Jewish Journal singles columnist to get engaged.

From this week’s Jewish Journal:

Heroic parents, we salute you!
By Bruce Powell

Yes, you will get the "eye roll"; yes, you will get the "I don’t believe you are actually doing this to me"; yes, your teen might be upset.

But, in a private moment years hence, when reflecting on his or her teenage years, your child might say, "Well, yes, my parents embarrassed me at the time, but I certainly knew they cared about my well-being. My friends’ parents didn’t check up on them; they thought I was the lucky one."

L.A.’s Jewish high schools are all over the map
By Julie Gruenbaum Fax

In 1987, enrollment at the seven Jewish high schools in Los Angeles covered just 720 kids, about 100 of them in one non-Orthodox school, a predecessor to Milken.

Today, more than 2,600 teens attend 14 Jewish high schools in the Los Angeles area, with 1,000 students in two community schools. In addition to those in the Los Angeles area, a Chabad yeshiva in Long Beach has 55 students, and the trans-denominational Tarbut V’Torah in Irvine has 155 students.

More teens in Los Angeles are now enrolled in full-time Jewish education than in supplementary Jewish education.

Moderates Win Out In Pico/Robertson Kashrut Battle?

A Modern Orthodox bloke says: "A Yasher Koach to the 3 Rabbis involved for keeping our area free of the right wing radicals.

Pico/Robertson’s rabbis at the three major Modern Orthodox shuls email:

Dear Friends,

We are pleased to inform you that as of Monday, March 3, 2008, the RCC Hashgacha for Doheny Kosher will be fully reinstated. Thank G-d, we are able to state, with the fullest confidence, that the meat at Doheny Kosher is at the highest level of Kashrut possible for non-glatt meat.

We are very grateful to the RCC for going to great efforts to clarify all of the pertinent issues and instituting new measures and safeguards to assure our community that it’s Kashrut needs are being met. We would like to thank all our friends for your patience while this matter was being resolved.

Please note that in order to avoid any consumer confusion between glatt and non-glatt meats (there have been such cases in the past), the non-glatt meats will carry a new label, "Prime Kosher non- glatt". The new label will of course state that the Kashrut is under the supervision of the RCC.

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Elazar Muskin
Rabbi Yosef Kanefsky
Rabbi Steven Weil

Open Season On Jews

The Jewish Press blogs:

You think what’s happening in Sderot, where Jews are being torn apart by crudely designed rockets on an HOURLY basis, isn’t lighting a fuse under anti-Semites all over the globe, including within the two "great democracies"–UK and USA?

Exhibit A: Russian-Jewish oligarch Roman Abramovich who spends most of his time in London, owns and operates one of England’s top soccer teams-CHELSEA FC. In late 2007, Abramovich fired his high-priced Portuguese coach and brought in, Avraham Grant, one of Israel’s top coaches. The initial anti-Semitic firestorm that was in part stoked by the British media, died down the minute Grant’s team started winning consecutive matches. In fact, Chelsea is having a very good season and at press time was in 3rd place in the UK’s top division. However, in recent days Grant and his actress wife Tzofit have been verbally and physically threatened by a hard core group of anti-Semitic Chelsea fans. When Chelsea lost a relatively unimportant local match to rival Tottenham Spurs (a team whose fans ironically call themselves "Jews", because of the veteran Jewish ownership of the team and large Jewish fan base) last week, Grant received an envelope with a mysterious powder, threatening letter attached. While Scotland Yard might be investigating this incident, no one in the British political and security hiearchy seems to be in a rush to arrest people even though these rabidly anti-Semitic fans aren’t exactly running from the authorities.

Exhibit B: It’s been said that "white men" can’t dunk a basketball. Perish the thought that an all-Jewish boys high school basketball squad has been beating the tar off of public and Christian high school teams across Colorado. However, there are miracles in metro Denver. Now, just as the Herzl/Rocky Mt. Hebrew Academy is thisclose to qualifying for a regional championship, the Colorado High School Athletic Association refuses to change the playoff schedule to accommodate Herzl Academy’s Sabbath (non-playing) needs. The acrimony has gotten so bad that state politicians are looking to step into the picture and help the Herzl squad. If anything, Coloradon politicians don’t want the moniker-‘We’re Rocky Mountain High On Anti-Semitism.’
