Open Season On Jews

The Jewish Press blogs:

You think what’s happening in Sderot, where Jews are being torn apart by crudely designed rockets on an HOURLY basis, isn’t lighting a fuse under anti-Semites all over the globe, including within the two "great democracies"–UK and USA?

Exhibit A: Russian-Jewish oligarch Roman Abramovich who spends most of his time in London, owns and operates one of England’s top soccer teams-CHELSEA FC. In late 2007, Abramovich fired his high-priced Portuguese coach and brought in, Avraham Grant, one of Israel’s top coaches. The initial anti-Semitic firestorm that was in part stoked by the British media, died down the minute Grant’s team started winning consecutive matches. In fact, Chelsea is having a very good season and at press time was in 3rd place in the UK’s top division. However, in recent days Grant and his actress wife Tzofit have been verbally and physically threatened by a hard core group of anti-Semitic Chelsea fans. When Chelsea lost a relatively unimportant local match to rival Tottenham Spurs (a team whose fans ironically call themselves "Jews", because of the veteran Jewish ownership of the team and large Jewish fan base) last week, Grant received an envelope with a mysterious powder, threatening letter attached. While Scotland Yard might be investigating this incident, no one in the British political and security hiearchy seems to be in a rush to arrest people even though these rabidly anti-Semitic fans aren’t exactly running from the authorities.

Exhibit B: It’s been said that "white men" can’t dunk a basketball. Perish the thought that an all-Jewish boys high school basketball squad has been beating the tar off of public and Christian high school teams across Colorado. However, there are miracles in metro Denver. Now, just as the Herzl/Rocky Mt. Hebrew Academy is thisclose to qualifying for a regional championship, the Colorado High School Athletic Association refuses to change the playoff schedule to accommodate Herzl Academy’s Sabbath (non-playing) needs. The acrimony has gotten so bad that state politicians are looking to step into the picture and help the Herzl squad. If anything, Coloradon politicians don’t want the moniker-‘We’re Rocky Mountain High On Anti-Semitism.’

Hovel-Side Chats

Khunrum emails: " Luke needs to have the occasional Hovel Side Chat like President Franklin Roosevelt of yore. May I suggest a cheap fire place mock up with fake logs for that cozy look. A steady stream of our boy talking on the phone, typing and occasionally picking his nose ain’t making it."

Chaim Amalek emails: "Man oh man, some of this stuff is really creepy.  And it will be the creepy stuff that will get you what thou seekest."

Jewish boys hoops team won’t play on Saturday

DENVER (AP) — State senators have taken up the cause of a Jewish boys basketball team whose playoff run may be halted because its players can’t play on the Jewish Sabbath.

The Herzl/Rocky Mountain Hebrew Academy team could be headed for a regional championship on Saturday, March 8, if it wins one more game. But the Denver team’s religious beliefs prohibit students from playing on the Jewish Sabbath between sundown Friday and sundown Saturday.

If Herzl/RMHA makes it to the regional championship and refuses to play a Saturday game, another school would be chosen to take its place, CHSAA commissioner Bill Reader said.

Earlier this month, the Colorado High School Activities Association, which governs sports and other high school activities, rejected the team’s request for a schedule change.

At the end of morning debate in the state Senate on Wednesday, Majority Leader Ken Gordon, D-Denver, called on the CHSAA to be more flexible.

Nearer My God To Thee

My two favorite hymns are Nearer My God To Thee and Abide With Me.

I’m noticing a theme here — the closeness of God.

It’s so much easier to feel close to God in Christianity because you have Jesus and the whole religion is about dissolving yourself in Him and throwing yourself on Him and pleading for His love and mercy.

Maybe that’s why I’m such a pathetic lover and the opposite of the Alpha male.

I’ve rarely felt close to God. Most people relate to God like they do to their father and I have a distant but respectful relationship with both my dad and my God.

Yet this wounded child within me yearns to be closer to both God and dad and that’s why I listen to Air Supply and hymns and blog about my feelings.

Paul Tournier wrote a book called "A Place For You." I didn’t particularly enjoy the book but I understood the theme — the human desire for a home.

I’ve found my home in shul.

Three RCC Rabbis Accused Of Feminism

Needless to say, I’m not worthy to carry the tzitzit of any of these guys.

The RCC is the Rabbinical Council of California. It is the most powerful Orthodox authority on the West Coast.

A few months ago, a friend asked me about her friend’s dispute with the RCC. "You’ll never beat the RCC," I said.

Kishke posts: "The Beis Din of Agudas HaRabbonim is a bad joke. “Prominent Beis Din” indeed."

The case revolves around a divorcing woman who went to a secular court for a financial settlement on her divorce. This is a no-no in Orthodox life. Religious Jews aren’t supposed to go to secular court against each other. They’re supposed to settle things with a Jewish religious court (Beit Din).

I don’t know much here, but it seems that divorcing women are more likely to go to a secular court because they believe that the Beit Din is patriarchal and biased against them. The following blog alleges the opposite:

RCC RABBIS PLACED IN CHEIREM

ONCE AGAIN THE RCC AND ITS RABBIS ARE IN "HOTWATER" FOR ACTS OF CORRUPTION. A REPUTABLE BAIS DIN IN MONSEY HAS PLACED RABBI UNION,RABBI BEIRISH GOLDENBERG,RABBI SAUER IN CHEIREM FOR ISSUING A FALSE SEIRUV AGAINST AN INNOCENT MAN IN LOS ANGELES. HERE IS THE HEBREW AND ENGLISH LINKS CONDEMNING THEIR ACTIONS:

Live For Sdorot

Joe emails:

Luke! what is up man I can’t believe you missed the ‘Live for Sderot‘ benefit last night! It was truly an amazing production.I was so excited and wired after I could hardly sleep when i got home finally at 1am! There were abt 400 ppl at the Wilshire theatre, possibly the first ever event like this that so many Jewish and Israeli organizations came together to support such an important cause. Was certainly the first time I had been in the same room as John Voight,Rabbi Yemini, Kabbalah Center homies, the Israeli crowd, and folk from the La Brea and Pico/Robertson shuls. I called you from there but missed you again…You really should have been there to cover it,and if I’m being honest…kinda pisses me off that you weren’t.

>>>Give me a heads up on these things.

Shan’t! This event was publicised widely over the past few weeks in all Jewish/Israeli local papers.. and the Jewish Journal took out a full page back cover ad..yes,the same edition that had the Limud experince on the cover. So,lets say you managed to miss all that, well there are times reporters need to act spontaneously and get down there… I called two of my other friends from the event who live in your area and each one of them arrived there within 20 mins. And if I may…I suggest you spend less time posting random IM’s about pornographers and more time staying current on events of value. Sorry if this sounds harsh, but don’t you understand? You are so much better than that Luke and your readers deserve better too.

Yesterday’s News Tomorrow

Check out this blog post by Brad A. Greenberg. Note how he’s already written the article that will appear in Thursday’s Jewish Journal but the Journal, in its infinite wisdom, won’t publish it until tomorrow. Why isn’t the Journal publishing its pieces as soon as they are edited and fit for publication? Because it is a lazy monopoly newspaper that still doesn’t get the web. I guess they fear cannibalizing their print readership if they give stuff away online in advance of the print run.

When I look out at Jewish Los Angeles, I see thousands of Jews who want their news when it happens.

By the waters of the Los Angeles River, there we sat down and wept when we remembered the news. On the willows there we hung up our lyres. For there they that carried us away captive required of us a song; and they that wasted us required of us mirth, saying, Sing us one of the songs of Zion. How shall we sing the LORD’s song in a strange land?

If I forget thee, O news, let my right hand wither, let my tongue cleave to my palate if I do not remember you, if I do not set you above my highest joy. Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem! Praise your God, O Zion!

Greenberg writes:

Karl Rove and the politics of religion

Last spring, Karl Rove was outed by atheist superstar Christopher Hitchens as a fellow nonbeliever.

"He doesn’t shout it from the rooftops, but when asked, he answers quite honestly. I think the way he puts it is, "I’m not fortunate enough to be a person of faith."

But last night Rove told me he is in fact a religious person, though he didn’t specify how his Christian roots manifest themselves in his life.

Rove was in Los Angeles to speak at the Gibson Ampitheatre, one of a number of distinguished voices in this year’s Public Lecture Series by American Jewish University. His invitation had caused a bit of consternation in the Jewish community, but he quickly won over many of his skeptics, which I wrote about in an article that will be online Thursday.

"I spent part of my childhood in Utah," Rove said at a VIP dinner before the lecture. "I went to a high school that is 95 percent Mormon, and only in Utah could a Presbyterian and a Jew both be gentiles."

Regardless of his own beliefs, Rove, who left his post as chief adviser to President Bush in August, was instrumental in helping Bush monopolize the support of evangelical voters and making religious rhetoric an essential part of presidential campaigns, something we are seeing plenty of this year.

You’re Not A Member Of A Community Until People Gossip About You

I was studying the Holiness Code in Leviticus 19 this week through the 18th? Century work Sefer Ha Chinuch (Book of Education).

It argues against gossip because it destroys communal bonds and social peace.

Yet a sociologist would argue you are not regarded as a member of the community until people gossip about you. I’m gossiped about in Pico/Robertson because I am a member of this Orthodox community, whether I’m wanted or not.

If you tell me there’s a member of your shul who nobody gossips about, I’ll say it is 100x more likely that the person is not a member of the community than that the person is truly righteous and beyond gossip.

At the shuls I’ve belonged to, nobody has gossiped about the Mexican help because they are not regarded as interesting or as members of the community. People don’t gossip about those below them in social status.
