The Time Dennis Prager Invited The Cruise Girl To His Cabin To Interview Her

Dennis Prager on his first radio hour today: For about 30 years, people have been subscribing to tapes and CDs of my lectures. One that I sent a few years ago, it was a young Swedish woman in her twenties who we met on one our listener cruises. She was working on board the ship. A lot of European young people work on these ships. As soon as I heard she was from Sweden and she had gone to graduate school in Sweden, I said, oh fantastic, I’d like to interview you. Would you come to my cabin so I could interview you? And I’m smiling because it sounds a little suspicious if you have a dirty mind like Sean [Prager’s engineer].

She Wanted To Give Me Her Heart!

When a woman offers me her body, I know how to respond. I say no because the Torah forbids me.

But when a woman I don’t even know offers me a "Heart!" on Facebook  — and the woman appears in her 40s, has two kids and is in a relationship — what do I do? I’m supposed to accept the "Heart!" and send one back. But I’m shy. I’m not sure I’m ready for this. I’m sure this is forbidden in the Oral Law if not the Written Law. I’m going back to the Torah. I can no longer deal with this fallen world.

‘How Could He Have Gotten With That Cow?’

She was sick about her boyfriend’s taste in women. "How could he have ever gotten with that cow? Those big fat legs. Eww!"

She proceeded to rip to shreds the looks of a 40-plus woman who on my scale was well above average.

I’ve found that women — when they are being honest — are far harsher about the looks of other women than men are. I’ve found that women tend to have little clue about what looks in a woman turn on a guy.

I’ve found ex-girlfriends who have not been shy in critiquing — for good and for ill — the looks of other women I’m interested in. They seem happier when I’ve moved on to someone better looking than them and they seem disgusted when I’ve gone down.

Women also tend to hate the looks of women who seem to communicate, "I’ll let you do anything to me." Guys love women like that, but other women hate them.

I remember Cathy Seipp saying to me about one of my girlfriends, "She looks like she’d let you do anything to her."

Cathy hated that. I guess other women prefer women who are quite strict and selective about what they will do with a guy. That makes other women feel more secure, that they won’t have to stretch themselves to accommodate their guy’s desires. If other women aren’t doing certain acts, then they won’t have to either, but if other women are doing things, then they feel pressed to compete. They don’t want their guy to feel ripped off and resentful and then to wander to accommodate his deepest darkest desires.

Until the movie Deep Throat, most wives did not feel obliged to give their husbands oral — a violation of the Torah!

I was going out with a girl I’ll call Jane (Jewish). She told me about her friend Penny* (not Jewish) who was proud of her ——- technique and taught it to Jane (to Jane’s undeniable benefit, and to the benefit of her male partners) — it’s important to use the cupped fist to stroke up and then reverse the direction of the fist on the downstroke. Penny even offered to show Jane how she performed on her boyfriend, offered to let her be in the room and watch while she did this.

"Men are simple creatures," say many women. "All they want is for you to get naked and to cook for them."

"I used to give my boyfriend a —— every morning," said one girlfriend. "It kept him happy."

Sex does tend to take the edge off many a woman’s bad mood. It’s really hard to hate someone you’re connecting with sexually. The good sex leads to intimate feelings which leads to more good sex. Bad feelings lead to less sex which leads to more bad feelings.

But I can recall one relationship where we were communicating, emotionally close, and having great sex, and she still cheated on me with another girl. That was shocking. I couldn’t believe it. She had gone from my bed that morning to sharing her bed that night with an ex-girlfriend. I’d been giving her orgasms — I thought! — just a few hours before and then bam!

She said it was just a casual hook-up. A booty call. How did I feel about that?

I felt sick.

I was just reading Masters & Johnson and they said that a woman’s most intense orgasms tend to come when she is by herself. Ouch!

Women are capable of so many orgasms and so much pleasure and can open so wide and can so easily enjoy partners of either sex, it’s frightening. Oy, the horror! The horror!

I prefer Orthodoxy where we have lots of rules and it is easier to feel safe. You know what’s expected of you. It’s all written down and you do it.

Mary emails:

You know what I hate? That whole "above average" label that men who have a lot going for them (whether physically, intellectually, professionally, etc) slap on women who are, frankly, gross–because these are men who could do SO MUCH better. Can you tell me what "average" is? What does that mean? Give me an example of a woman who is average. Jeff and I had an argument about this once–he called an ex-girlfriend of his (she had a stupid name) "above average" when I said she looked like a linebacker with rosacea and stringy hair. Men are so confusing. This one would take it in the ass, though. Maybe that raised her stock.

You are right about one thing, though–women are much happier to have their exes go off to beautiful women rather than less attractive ones. I take it one step further by working backward as well–if the person I’m with dated ugly (or dumb) women, it bothers me because it makes me feel as if he might see me in that same league. Preposterous.

When I lose a woman who’s opened herself to me totally, that always hurts a lot more than the loss of some prissy bitch. It just does. So don’t diss women who are willing to be vulnerable. It’s a beautiful thing. It says, "I love you totally."

It says in the Torah that we are supposed to love God with all of our being, with our heart and soul and might. Well, shouldn’t a husband and wife love each other with their heart and soul and might?

Not Allowed To Leave The House

Walking to the library late yesterday afternoon, I overheard some boys talking to each other.

"I’m only in fourth grade," said one, "and I’m not allowed to leave the house, yet I know my way around this city."

He’s not allowed to leave the house without supervision? Wow.

Before I entered school in second grade in Cooranbong, Australia, I wandered around the bush chopping down trees and blazing trails. By fifth grade, I was leaving the house early every morning for a two mile run. Then it was two-mile bike ride to school.

By seventh grade, I was running more than six miles a day. On Sundays, I’d take off early in the morning with a little money in my pocket and just run and walk most of the day and stop into stores and buy lemonade and candy.

I spent the summer between eight and ninth grade in Washington D.C. where again I’d just take off and spend the day walking around the city.

When my brother was 14, he’d hitchhike 60 miles each way on a Sunday to go to these races.

In high school on many Friday nights in winter, I’d tell my parents I was going to a Bible study and then I’d run and walk the two miles into town and cover basketball games for the Auburn Journal.

I grew up with a lot of space. At home, I made sure to play by the rules. Outside of the home, I collected Playboy and Penthouse magazines and stashed them in the woods for after-school inspiration before returning to the cold Christ-centered tyranny of evangelical Christianity.

Once at an Orthodox Jewish home in the Aish HaTorah community, I heard the mother say she’d given her son a Penthouse magazine and a jar of vaseline for his bar mitzvah.

With such goodies, the boy will never want to leave the house.

The Uninvited

"You should call your memoir ‘The Uninvited’," his therapist had said.

That came back to him early Friday morning as he tossed and turned on his bed by the toilet.

Oy, the shame!

He’d signed up August 15 for the August 27 shul banquet. It was now August 21 and he did not know the location for the banquet.

They did not want him! He was sure of it. He felt sick.

He lowered himself — him, the greatest writer of his generation! — to emailing the shul to find out where it would be and now he’d received an email back shocked and appalled that he had not receive that information and promising that it would come quickly.

"Just tell me the damn location!" he thought. "Don’t tell me how shocked and appalled you are. Just tell me where it’s going to be. I feel like I am trying to break into Fort Knox and all I want is go to the banquet on my $180 ticket that I paid for with Paypal. I’m one of you."

He pictured all of his friends one by one saying how shocked and appalled they were that he did not have the location of the banquet and how he’d be receiving that information any moment but that moment would never come and then the banquet would pass him by and the pretty girls would always be out of reach.

He remembered second grade. Gavin Brown’s birthday party. He was not invited. His best friend’s mom had to intervene to secure him admission. And then as he was bicycling along at the party being his usual witty and cutting self — oh, how funny he’d been cracking on others! — his classmates reminded him that he had not been invited, that they were forced by the grown-ups to endure his presence.

Endure his presence. How many thousands of people over the course of his lifetime had felt like they were "enduring" his presence. Oy, why couldn’t he be cool? Why did he have to live in shame? Yet, there was something strangely comforting about it all. He always knew he’d grow up to be a martyr, to live his life on a cross like Jesus H. Christ. He would suffer for the sins of the world because he was an artist and his insights into life were too penetrating for the masses to handle so they’d have to crucify him.

He knew he would never find out where the banquet was and that would be OK because it would mean he could cling to his story of unjust persecution. He could cling to his image of himself as a martyr. He wouldn’t have to let go of his shame and engage people at shul with an open heart. He could just tell himself, "They all hate me!" And then he could despise them and tell himself that he was special. That he was truly God’s suffering servant.

He put on Debbie Friedman’s "In The Beginning" CD three and waited for the paranoia to leach from his system. "Childhood was for fantasies, for nursery ryhmes and toys. The world was much too busy to understand small girls and boys. As I grew up, I came to learn that life was not a game, that heroes were just people that we called another name. And the old shall dream dreams and the youth shall see visions and our hopes shall rise up to the sky. We must live for today, we must live for tomorrow, give us time, give us strength, give us life."

Amen.

PS. I got the address Friday afternoon, the same time as everyone else who bought a ticket. I’m ready to party!

What A Great Country!

From The New York Times:

In 2007, the top one ten-thousandth of households took home 6 percent of the nation’s income, up from 0.9 percent in 1977. It was the highest such level since at least 1913, the first year for which the I.R.S. has data.

The top 1 percent of earners took home 23.5 percent of income, up from 9 percent three decades earlier.

The Times buried the above information at the bottom of a long article on the economic problems of the super-rich.

The rich, as a group, are no longer getting richer. Over the last two years, they have become poorer. And many may not return to their old levels of wealth and income anytime soon.

Doctors Battle Disease

But the rules of engagement are set by politicians and lawyers. (From Dennis Prager’s show today)

Every helping hand is a controlling hand. The more government controls medicine, the more doctor’s efforts will be circumscribed by bureaucrats.

The Libyan terrorist recently released by Scotland served 28 days for every person he murdered in the Lockerbie bombing. That’s why many of us support capital punishment for murderers.

The Scottish politician said: "We will show compassion no matter the atrocity."

British families of those murdered lobbied for the terrorist’s release (because many of them believe the CIA blew up the plane). American families tended to have a different attitude.

The Feminist Sexual Ethics Project

Gail Labovitz writes for Brandeis University:

There are several rabbinic passages which take up, or very likely take up, the subject of same-sex marital unions – always negatively. In each case, homosexual marriage (particularly male homosexual marriage) is rhetorically stigmatized as the practice of non-Jewish (or pre-Israelite) societies, and is presented as an outstanding marker of the depravity of those societies; homosexual marriage is thus clearly associated with the Other. The first three of the four rabbinic texts presented here also associate homosexual marriage with bestiality. These texts also employ a rhetoric of fear: societal recognition of such homosexual relationships will bring upon that society extreme forms of Divine punishment – the destruction of the generation of the Flood, the utter defeat of the Egyptians at the Exodus, the wiping out of native Canaanite peoples in favor of the Israelites.

The earliest source on this topic is in the tannaitic midrash to the book of Leviticus. Like a number of passages in Leviticus, including chapter 18 to which it is a commentary, the midrashic passage links sexual sin and idolatry to the Egyptians (whom the Israelites defeated in the Exodus) and the Canaanites (whom the Israelites will displace when they come into their land). The idea that among the sins of these peoples was the recognition of same-sex marriages is not found in the biblical text, but is read in by the rabbis…

GAIL LABOVITZ ALSO TACKLES ONE OF MY FAVORITE TOPICS – FEMALE HOMOEROTIC SEXUAL ACTIVITY:

The sources addressing female homoerotic sexual activity in rabbinic literature (link to glossary) are very few, and far less clear than those regarding sexual activity between men. There is a great deal of ambiguity in these texts as to what activities are forbidden, the consequences for women who engage in them, and the nature (that is, the source and/or the authority) of whatever prohibition does exist. Reading these sources suggests several potential reasons why rabbinic thinking on female homoerotic sexual activity is less developed than regarding male homoeroticism; these possibilities will be discussed in the course of the analysis of the texts below.

There is no direct prohibition on female homoerotic sexual activity in the Hebrew bible, indeed, no explicit discussion of such activity at all. Biblical laws of forbidden sexual couplings (notably Leviticus 18 and 20) are generally addressed to male listeners/readers. With the exception of the prohibition against bestiality (Leviticus 18:23 and 20:15-16), in which the prohibition against women committing this act follows on the prohibition to men,1 sexual acts which do not involve male participants are not discussed. Nor do the Mishnah (link to glossary) or the Tosefta (link to glossary) discuss sexual acts between women in any way. Only one midrashic (link to glossary) text from this period addresses any form of homoeroticism between women. As midrash, that is, as a form of exegesis of scriptural text, to Leviticus 18:3, this passage thus invokes the authority of scripture for its discourse on female homoeroticism; it links marriage between two women to the practices of the Canaanites and Egyptians, which this verse and numerous others explicitly forbid, as well as to a number of other sexual/marital connections explicitly or implicitly forbidden in scripture

While Gail Labovitz is undeniably correct about the paucity of coverage of female homoerotic sexual activity in the Talmud, I have found through my diligent research many references to female homoerotic sexual activity in other forms of literature. For instance, I was first informed about female homoerotic sexual activity in the "Letters" section of Penthouse magazine.

This literature invariably portrayed female homoerotic sexual activity in a positive light, particularly when this female homoerotic sexual activity led to  male-female hetero-erotic sexual activity, the staple of the Penthouse genre and often captured in high quality color photos of the most stimulating kind.

Perhaps we Jews should broaden our understanding of what constitutes sacred text so that we can include and not exclude Penthouse magazine? Shouldn’t we Jews who’ve known the pain of exclusion and gas chambers be ready to open ourselves to alternative points of view on female homoerotic sexual activity be it of the oral, digital or dildo variety?

The literature of Penthouse provided me in childhood with a level of understanding of female homoerotic sexual activity that has not been surpassed by the weightiest of academic tomes. Still, all this learning has been of little comfort to the poor guy who’s girlfriend cheats on him with another girl. Oy, the shame! Oy, the humiliation! Oy and woe to female homoerotic sexual activity! It is my enemy!
