I’ve Been Reborn In The Spirit

Over much of my life, I was lost in sin. I was a slave to my wicked desires. But now I think I have conquered my unhealthy proclivities.

I’ve finally seen the light and surrendered my life to my Heavenly Father.

For much of my life, I’ve been tortured by my knowledge of so many females I wanted to know better. Girls I knew in my youth. The ones who got away. Unmolested.

So I’ve been friending them on Facebook and I realize that I have overcome my nasty nudges. Now that they are in their 40s, I no longer look at them as objects.

Victory over Sin!

The Beth Am Library Minyan

Joe emails: I always wondered why no orthodox shul can come up with a substitute for this type of experience. The Beth Am Library Minyan was at a level of spiritual “truthiness” akin to a Hasidic service – the people who were there (save for one small issue to be noted in a minute) were into it. They wanted to pray, they wanted to learn, they wanted to participate, and you had to buy in to that to be there. There was really no opportunity to stare off into some three month old copy of some Jewish Action magazine, you had to be there.

The one issue is that a lot of single guys and gals were there stalking their mates with an extreme sense of urgency, but that is really not against any torah law that i am aware of, provided you had separate seating in the orthodox version – maybe the orthodox version would have to include some long distance peering.

The obvious modifications would have to be separate seating and no women leadership/participation in the rituals. However, I do not see why there could be some “Carlebach” style singing, a more discussion type torah service led by the laity, and more audience participation as part of such service. The happy minyan is a place for people who do not fit in, not those who are particularly looking for an intellectual feast, and is not appropriate for the task of making people who fit in to other places have a better time.

There is no reason that one designated person should read the entire portion – open that job up in pieces. Each person should have a revolving responsibility to discuss the text.

After there could be a kiddush at which the young singles could canoodle. I just think that most orthodox services are too by rote and boring, and turn off a beginner – think of the difference if someone came in to this minyan and…

Abide With Me

Abide With Me” and “Nearer My God To Thee” are my two favorite Christian hymns.

I wonder why. I guess one reason is that there is nothing explicitly or uniquely Christian about them.

I identify with being on the Titanic and the ship going down and there aren’t enough lifeboats and you realize that it is all about to end and that all your desires and strivings will no longer count for much. It is in these times that I turn to God and want to feel connected to Him.

I want to die thinking about God.

Now living for God, that’s a much more difficult challenge.

Christianity is much more focused on the next world than this one. It is a romantic religion while Judaism is much more prosaic. This makes it easier for Christians to get all spiritual. They have such an appealing story — salvation descends from above. You just have to accept it.

I have zero doubts about the wisdom of my conversion to Judaism. I don’t think there is anything new in Christianity that is true and I don’t think there is anything true in Christianity that is new, I just get wistful sometimes for the tunes and people I left behind. Sometimes I’ll play these hymns 20 times in a row and get all teary.

According to Wikipedia: Abide with Me is a Christian hymn written by Henry Francis Lyte.

He wrote it in 1847 while he lay dying from tuberculosis; he survived only a further three weeks after its completion.

The hymn is a prayer for God to remain present with the speaker throughout life, through trials, and through death. The first verse is probably the most well-known:

Abide with me; fast falls the eventide; the darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide. When other helpers fail and comforts flee, Help of the helpless, O abide with me.

ACCORDING TO WIKIPEDIA: “Nearer, My God, to Thee” is a 19th century Christian hymn by Sarah Flower Adams, based loosely on Genesis 28:11.

Lawrence Hoffman says Reform Judaism had an early preference for Christian hymns with the particularly Christian verses removed.

“Abide With Me” was sung at Temple Israel in St. Louis.

I’m sure the last stanza was omitted:

Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes;
Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies.
Heaven’s morning breaks, and earth’s vain shadows flee;
In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.

The Life Of Malcolm Hoenlein

Here is my humble effort from many years ago when my hair was still thick and my face smooth and my twinkiness shone brightly around many Los Angeles shuls.

The Cure For My Dennis Prager Fixation?

A friend — married with kids — emails: “I think welbutrin could help with the Dennis Prager fixation.”

Have there been chemical trials for this?

“I think so; lab rats were subjected to his image and radio show and those on welbutrin did not drink from the “Vote For Prager:” water bottle eventhough no other water was offered. Additionally, none were threatened with restraining orders.”

Do You Want To Talk About It?

No, I don’t want to talk about it.

I don’t mind blogging about it, but no, I definitely do not want to talk about it.

I hate that question, “Do you want to talk about it?”

Do you know what type of people ask me that question? Hot chicks who realize I’m into them but they’ll never want to sleep with me, not if I’m the last man on earth, but they know they’ll still have to run into me, so they turn away my advances and then say, “Do you want to talk about it?”

Why would I want to talk about it? To talk about it would be to discuss why I feel like a loser. Less than. A zero. A wanker. Defeated. Ashamed. Humiliated. I desire you but you don’t like me in that way. I can’t bear to sit in this shame and to talk about it. I hate this place of infamy. It’s just so low and humiliating. I know you’re going to tell all your friends that I hit on you and how you refused me and then none of them will want to sleep with me.

I measure my self-worth by the hotness of the women who sleep with me (or at least I did until I came to understand the profundity of the Torah and the need for adherence to God’s immutable — God I love that word — moral law).

There’s a sentence that I hate ten times more than “Do you want to talk about it?” That sentence is — “We need to talk.”

I can’t run away when someone important to me says, “We need to talk.”

The scary thing is that I will live in fear until we have that conversation. So if you really want to mess with me say, “Luke, we need to talk. Let’s get together in a year.”

That way I will live in fear for a year.

I guess I’m afraid of having to have an intimate conversation. I guess I’m afraid of intimacy.

When I hear, “We need to talk,” I get chills up and down my spine. I start pumping with adrenalin. I immediately try to guess what the conversation will be about and how I can answer the person’s concerns. If I see that I have done something wrong, I start thinking about how effectively I could lie my way out of this problem and what would be the best way of shading the lies so that I can later defend them as truths.

I don’t think normally healthy people experience such fright when they hear, “We need to talk.”

I think there’s something wrong with me. It’s not my degree of fright when I hear these words, it’s my realization that I’m walking around with this fear all the time, but only in moments of crisis am I conscious of it.

You can’t experience fear or any negative emotion or thought without needlessly tightening your body. Similarly, you can’t experience a positive feeling or thought without experiencing a release of tension.

That’s why getting an Alexander Technique lesson makes me smile. I feel myself letting go of needless tensions and fears and I become happy. It’s great when you can let go of emotional baggage with the needless physical tension.

Life Is Less Lonely With God

More

Wonder emails: I just watched one of your videos when you described how you marginalize yourself and are afraid to be open to others along with other things such as missing out on a “normal” life etc. I hope you had a wonderful Shabbat by the way. But the single most important reality for being a Jew is that G-d is One, and we are supposed to emulate and act in G-dly ways therefore we need to unify all aspects of our self or else we come to the state of marginalization. By coming to realize that G-d loves us we can build the strength to love and totally accept ourselves(as long as we still yearn to learn and grow). We are not rewarded for what we achieve but how much effort we put into realizing the Oneness of G-d and bringing that revelation to this world through our thoughts, emotions, and actions. Anything else is hevel. Have you studied Tanya, chassidus, or any meditative kabbalah? With joy, meditation, and mitzvot we can over come all barriers. Have you learned any of Rabbi Nachman‘s teachings? Shalom may G-d Al-mighty bless you in all you do and guide you in the path of the righteous.

Global Warming Blunder

From DennisPrager.com: “Dennis talk to Roy Spencer, Principal Research Scientist at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. His new book is The Great Global Warming Blunder: How Mother Nature Fooled the World’s Top Climate Scientists.”

Roy Spencer says that funding for study about global warming runs 99-1 in favor of those who believe that man-made carbon dioxide is ruining the planet.

The leaders of the global warming movement (such as Al Gore) refuse to debate.

Mother’s Day Without A Mother

On his radio show May 7, 2010, Dennis Prager said it was eery to contemplate mother’s day without a mother. “I feel like I have nothing to do.”

“My mother got a lot of pleasure from me. I have to say. Allen [Estrin] is nodding. Why wouldn’t she? I was a good son. I’m fun. I’m even somewhat famous, which brought her immense pleasure, I have to admit. I’d call her up before I’d go on national TV. It was like a ritual. I’d say, ‘Ma, I’ll be on CNN in five minutes.’ Or, ‘I’ll be on Fox’, or I’ll be on whatever. She just went nuts. She went crazy. She loved it. Till the end of her life.

“I’ve literally given over 2,000 lectures. To the end, she would ask, where are you? Because I’m always on the road. I’d say wherever I am. What are you doing? I gave a speech. The next question — did they applaud? Till the last day, she was just tickled pink that they applauded her son. I would always answer, ‘No, they booed, ma.’ We had these rituals. I don’t think she ever heard me.

“I moved out of my parent’s house at 21 and [every conversation] she would always ask me if I needed anything. That too became a joke in our lives. She meant it seriously. And I’d say, ‘Yeah, ma, I need cue tips.’ But she never sent them. I don’t think she heard me.”

British Contempt For The Jewish State

Larry Miller writes: Touted as the fresh face of British politics after his strong performances in televised debates with Labor leader Gordon Brown and Conservative David Cameron, the Cambridge-educated Clegg is also the face of an increasingly undiplomatic British disdain for Israeli policies that often crosses the line into open incitement against the Jewish state.

In at least two parliamentary districts with a high concentration of Islamic voters Liberal Democrat candidates distributed leaflets calling for Britain to
