Tom Wolfe’s Female Characters
Steve Sailer writes: In the 1960s Wolfe wrote with great zest and insight about New York and London young women trying to break into or not fall out of cafe society in a manner that marked him out as worthy descendant of Evelyn Waugh.
But then in the late 1960s, he got himself embedded on an aircraft carrier off North Vietnam to write “The Truest Sport: Jousting with Sam and Charlie.” This led to an obsession with masculine bravery that culminated in The Right Stuff in 1979. He seemed to lose some of his interest in female characters and the accompanying rather fey style he had used to successfully depict them in essays like “The Woman Who Has Everything “ and Radical Chic. In the 1970s, Wolfe’s output gets more butch and he seems to be losing interest in writing about women.
If anybody out there is writing Wolfe’s biography, a question I’d be interested in understanding more about is: What were his exercise regimens during different parts of his literary career? And did they have any effect on changes in his literary interests and tastes?
COMMENTS TO STEVE SAILER:
* I am working on a Wolfe bio. He is cooperating. But I have yet to ask him about exercise. (Michael Anton)
“In the 1970s, Wolfe’s output gets more butch and he seems to be losing interest in writing about women.”
I would, by the way, dispute this, at least in part. See, for example, the very long essay “The Me Decade and the Third Great Awakening” (1976), which has many insights on women but which I did not have the space in that essay to explore. Also, as I noted, The Right Stuff spends a good deal of time on the astronauts’ wives. Women grow in importance in his novels, with Charlotte being a sustained meditation on modern girlhood and the transition to young womanhood. Womanhood as a theme then recedes a bit in Back to Blood but remains important in the character of Magdalena.
As for the “fey” style of “The Woman Who Has Everything” and “Radical Chic,” I think Wolfe would describe that as his using the “downstage narrator” device. That is, when narrating–as opposed to giving quotes or direct point-of-view interior monologues, but describing the scene in the third person–he sometimes mimics the speech patterns of his subjects. So, for the former, it’s Helene’s voice that he’s aping. For the latter, sometimes it’s Lenny’s, but sometimes–for the stuff about hiring maids and what appetizers to serve and so forth–it’s Felicia’s, or else Amanda Burden’s or someone like that.
He does this from a male perspective in “Last America Hero” (Junior Johnson’s voice), “Mau-Mauing the Flak Catchers” (black street radicals), and “Truest Sport” (the fighter pilots). It’s the same device every time, but the effect is completely different because the voices are so different. I don’t think his style moved from fey to butch. Rather, Wolfe was just being a chameleon and adapting to his writing to his subjects.
* Hypergamy crops up in some very weird places. In the post-bellum South many attractive, young, ex-slave mulatto and octoroon women would shack up with bottom-of-the-heap white males. The men got the advantage of a wife they would otherwise never have had; the women the advantage of children who could cross the color line.
* Right, but my impression is that the sex ratio of downstage narrators shifted slightly away from women as he got older, until I Am Charlotte Simmons in his 70s. This is a little unusual in that you would normally expect the ratio to move the opposite way as a social satirist matures and develops a better grasp of more aspects of humanity. Instead with Wolfe, as he gets older he dials down the number of profiles of a London society girl or a Carnaby Street dolly, like was doing in the 1960s. My vague recollection from studying up on Wolfe to write a long review of The Right Stuff for the Rice Thresher in 1979 was that his time on board the aircraft carrier during the Vietnam War had a major impact on the direction of his career. It kind of liberated his inherent Southern gentleman High Tide of the Confederacy nature to write about masculine courage in The Right Stuff.
But it also, it seems to me, got in the way of his earlier talent for writing about society women. Thus, the female characters in The Bonfire of the Vanities don’t seem as well developed as you would have expected based on the magazine profiles of similar women he was writing 20 years before.
A lot of it is no doubt just opportunity cost: it would have been easy and profitable to continue writing about rich women, and no doubt he would have gotten very, very good at it. But Wolfe chose to invest his time and emotions in writing about pilots and the like, so he chose to miss his window of opportunity to become outstanding at writing about rich ladies.
These kind of choices come up a lot in the careers of literary journalists: do you leave the metropolis in search of fresh material? For example, there was something a bit heroic about Truman Capote leaving Manhattan cafe society to spend long periods in a small town in Kansas to write “In Cold Blood.”
Waugh was always looking for some kind of exotic expedition he could mine for articles, travels books, and eventually novels. The two trips to Ethiopia paid off, while the South American won provided the bizarre ending to A Handful of Dust, but Waugh’s trip to Spitsbergen was a total bust.
I think an overlooked aspect of Wolfe is that he’s so acute about the effects of physical differences upon characters’ personalities. In my review of I Am Charlotte Simmons, I asserted you could pretty much guess with some confidence each character’s body fat percentage.
Critic James Wood was extremely peeved in The New Yorker at Wolfe’s book Back to Blood. Novelists aren’t supposed to notice how people look! What kind of characters think about how other characters look? Vulgar characters, that’s who!
Wood wants you to know that he much prefers Thomas Mann’s The Magic Mountain, in which the characters sit around at a luxury health clinic thinking Deep Thoughts for 1,000 pages.
Wolfe’s “Mau-Mauing the Flak Catchers” pretty much introduced to American consciousness how huge Samoans are. This was a few years before Samoans started showing up in college football.
* Regarding Bonfire, what happened there is a little complicated by the two versions. Remember that version 1 appeared in Rolling Stone serially first. For that, Wolfe did a lot of original research on the police, the DAs, the courts and so on, but he felt that he knew society well enough that he could draw on his own prior reporting and knowledge.
He made the crucial mistake of making Sherman a writer initially and was so unhappy with that decision that, after the RS version was done, he spent two years re-writing and re-reporting to make Sherman a bond salesman. But in all that time, Wolfe didn’t do any new reporting on society. Hence Judy McCoy and Maria Ruskin are not great characters. Although the two dinner party scenes–and especially the first one–are among the great set-pieces by this greatest writer of set-pieces.
With Man In Full, he’s already implicitly acknowledged the deficiency of Maria and Judy and he made Martha Croker into a much greater character. I think they cut this from my piece, but that’s only the third time he used the famed “New Journalism” interior-point-of-view device for a woman, and the first time in fiction. Even with the earlier stuff about Helene and Baby Jane, he didn’t do that but stuck with downstage narrator. The only two times he had done it prior, IIRC, were “The Life & Hard Times of a Teenage London Society Girl” and “Me Decade.”
Martha is a fully realized character. Even Serena is better than Judy or Maria (though Elizabeth is more of a McGuffin than a character). Wolfe recycles a bit for Martha–e.g., “The Invisible Wife” from one of those 1970s Harper’s vignettes–but she’s still very three dimensional.
* Before the heart issue, Wolfe had a major crisis of confidence about the book’s setting. Basically, he had all the business action taking place in NYC while Charlie would visit his plantation in South Georgia. After getting about halfway finished, he felt that this wasn’t working and he wanted to set the whole book in Atlanta. But that required moving down there for a while and doing a ton more reporting. So it was a major delay and also forced him to rewrite tons of stuff that had already been written.
Then he had all these subplots, including one on Japan, one on the art world, and one on TV news, that he never was able to work in to his satisfaction. So he completely ditched on the one on Japan. He used part of the art world one, and saved the rest for Back to Blood. And the TV news one he re-wrote into a short story called “Ambush at Fort Bragg.”
I had a clever theory about how the earthquake in MiF was symbolic of the deus ex machine, a tie-in between Greek drama and Greek philosophy (Epictetus). I thought it was rather clever but when I asked him about the meaning and purpose of the earthquake he said “I had to get Conrad out of there!” I think he tried to do too much, wrote himself into cul-de-sacs and corners, and wasn’t able to resolve all of them.
That said, I think the endings of Bonfire and Charlotte are perfect.
* Weak characters is a Wolfe weakness in general, but his characters serve their purpose admirably. For example, a minor but consistent theme throughout his novels is our insecurity over the often startling extent of our ignorance, all of which is rooted in our concern over social status. Maria is perfectly serviceable as a social-climbing pretty young thing who feels humiliated and indignant after a British ‘snob’ shows up her ignorance of who Christopher Marlowe was.
In the same scene Sherman feels some small degree of elation because he has heard of Marlowe. Both characters sense that people of their station probably should know who Marlowe was, so Sherman, although he scarcely knows anything more about Marlowe than Maria, has a social edge on her and consequently experiences that small degree of elation. The really interesting thing is that in Wolfe’s novels, petty though we might call it, we can no more will ourselves not to feel that elation – or that insecurity – than we can will the sun’s rays to not warm our skin; the workings of social status carry on in ruthless disregard of our volition – or our outcries.
We can also shift from elation to anxiety with alarming swiftness. Sherman has barely had time to bask in his Marlowe triumph when Maria relates the story of the flight she just took, when she was sitting next to the ‘Brit’ and flipping through a catalogue of ‘Reiner Fetting,’ a designer whose show she had just attended in ‘Milano.’ Sherman is bothered by Maria’s use of the Italian rather than English name for the city, not least, we’re told, because he has no idea of who Reiner Fetting is – it’s Sherman’s turn to find himself on unfamiliar turf – but we may also speculate whether Sherman’s annoyance isn’t compounded by the knowledge that an Italian artist has recently gifted Maria one of his paintings, to her obvious delight and to Sherman’s unease. (Sherman thought the painting trash, but it ” gave off the sanctimonious odor of serious art” and, said Maria, the painter had been featured in the NYT, so he felt forced to supply a considered opinion on it, but all he found himself capable of was contriving something about its “directness.”)
Not all us can hope to be art critics, of course, but we can sometimes find ourselves unexpectedly woefully ignorant. In Charlotte Simmons Jojo is left reeling after being unable to comply with his professor’s impromptu request to define – or even pronounce – certain words used in the term paper he has fraudulently submitted as his own work. Whatever elation we as readers might feel at the expense of the oafish jock dissipates when a still hot and bothered Jojo demands that his tutor, Adam, who wrote the paper, define those same words himself. Surprisingly, Adam is able to do so at once. Whether we find that plausible or not, I’m sure we know of someone in our lives whom we suspect would be able to do it with Adam’s aplomb, and that suspicion may produce disquiet about our own abilities.
* I naturally tend toward the mesomorphic physique, so I used to jog a lot to balance it out when I was in my 20s. With an American diet weightlifting just made me beefy and thick. Wolfe is totally on the mark about the psychological effect of different exercise regimes. Weightlifting makes you bigger, more confident and gives you a more “imposing” attitude (I wouldn’t call it aggressive — it’s more like a subtly menacing self-assuredness). Jogging makes you a little more flighty and skittish.
This might be saying a bit too much here, but hey, what do I care:
Once, after I’d been weightlifting a lot, doing squats and deadlifts and such and was up to around a fairly lean 220 lbs at my 6’1″, I attracted the attention of a black neighbor who invited me over on some pretext. I walked in and he (yes, he was a gay, although I didn’t know it when I walked in his apartment) locked the door behind us. Turned out the guy was an ex-con, and he wanted to get it on. So he whipped out a crack pipe, took a hit and then tried to get all cozy with me, and when I objected he gave me a “hard” look like he was going to get what he wanted no matter what I thought of it. Frankly, objectively speaking, it should have been a terrifying situation. However, In the subsequent adrenaline rush, and probably the crack cocaine contact high, I immediately noticed his scarred and thick knuckles (indicates fighting experience), and thought to myself in a rational, calm manner “OK, I’ve got to grab this guy because he knows how to box, and I’m probably stronger than he is, so I can toss him clean out the window if it comes to that.” It was kind of an insane way to think, but he saw me thinking it and backed off. He even opened the door when I commanded him to do so. This is the mentality you get when you’re pumping iron. That’s why inmates lift whenever they can. It works.
However, it’s telling that boxers train with both weightlifting and jogging, because being too confident and “set” in the ring could get you surprised in a bad way, even if you’re aerobically in great shape.
Devlin, BTW, is a real gem. The guy is totally independent, low-profile and sharp as a knife. I wish I could read more from him. Tom Wolfe has been more honest than most about sex reality, but that isn’t saying all that much since the 70s or so. When I watch old films from the 1950s such as The Third Man I’m shocked by how honest and realistic the portrayal of female nature is compared to today. Wolfe never makes it quite so blunt as that excellent film. I feel that having grown up mostly in the 1980s I was robbed of a decent cultural education, and I’ve paid for it dearly. Although, as Devlin has suggested, perhaps it’s best for young men not to know too much about women. I probably wouldn’t have my several beautiful kids if I’d been such a cynic. But then if it weren’t for the sexual revolution they’d probably all be living with me full-time.
* Long distance running lowers testosterone (at least 30 miles a week). Strength training raises testosterone. Man is not a horse. He was never meant to run marathons. He was meant to lift rocks, use his whole strength to kill an enemy in a hand-to-hand fight, and hurl projectiles at his foes. Be the man you were supposed to be and lift.
Seriously. I used to run marathons. I was depressed, I would gain weight, I had no aggression, and I couldn’t focus on anything. Now I just lift. It’s a world of difference. Turns out I never was an effete, passive dweeb. That was just a lack of T.
* F Roger Devlin is the shit. His work, particularly this one linked below is posted as canonical writing all over websites in the manosphere. He explains your marriage better than anyone else. And while I could have gotten links from all over the place to the article, I picked this one from dontmarry.com from the list of stuff that site thinks you should read “if’n” you get the bug to get married (disclosure. I am married and probably because of Roger Devlin but that is a very long story. But when I first started conversing with with my wife, I called her “Pollyandra” and rubbed the Devlin Writing in her face. )
Rotating Polyandry—and its Enforcers
https://dontmarry.files.wordpress.com/2009/03/rotating.pdf
The essence of the writing is a review of a book “Women’s Infidelity-Living in Limbo” by Michelle Langley. The author had noticed that for nothing she started hating her husband and becoming attracted to other men. She did 1000 interviews with other woman and found this pattern of polyandry, meaning multiple men, typically in serial relationships.
The pattern is thus, woman meets man, is attracted to man, mates with man, has child with man, aaaaaaannnnnnnnddd, after 4 years, that’s right, 4 years after, she suddenly finds herself attracted to other men.
So at first she figures, especially since All Women Are Like That, that there is nothing wrong with her, she is an angelic woman, and women never cheat, that’s what men do. So then if there is nothing wrong with her and she wants to get nailed by other men…
Then there is something wrong with that loser husband that fate has imposed on her. (Sound familiar)
Women go a couple of directions. They can act on this attraction and screw around. Some leave only to start the whole cycle over.
Often they don’t leave the husband but stay and have the affair. Many reported the sense of anger at coming back to their husbands after a tryst and expressing anger at him. Yes, coming back home after a business trip, walking around the house inspecting as if wearing a white glove, finding fault with everything, ripping the skin off of him for the crime of being the husband. If the paramour dumps them then the women “experienced extreme grief, became deeply depressed and expressed tremendous anger toward their husbands.” (towards their husbands!!).
Others may not act on the attraction but do act on the loss of attraction to the husband especially when ovulating. Some begin to pick pick pick at him, to rip the skin off of him, to push him, to even bait him into domestic violence in hope he’ll leave her.
Consider this bit from the essay linked above “A Woman in Full”:
“Consider the 1965 essay “The Woman Who Has Everything.” Helene is a rich young divorcée of 25. (Today she would be closer to 40. At 25 our metro-gals haven’t even begun to think about, much less actually married, their “starter husband.”) Helene has divorced Kurt because…well, for no discernable reason, although full custody of her son and “a great deal of alimony” no doubt helped smooth the passage.”
Polyandry.
The interesting thing to me is what is happening right now with this “Female Viagra” pill, flibanserin controversy. The FDA recently approved it. I wrote about this in 2013 when the FDA had rejected it. The pill claims to solve “low female libido”. The original writeup said it targeted women who literally had no sexual thoughts during the day as compared to men who typically have them all the time. In a doctor’s review after the 2013 rejection it was written “It is ineffective in solving a problem that does not exist.”
And feminists went crazy. Those men have viagra. It’s sexist that the FDA won’t approve a drug that will work for women. The pharma company Sprout bought the rights to the drug from the developer after the 2013 FDA rejection. And there formed this “group”, actually a network of 24 nonprofit and for-profit groups and companies that have come together to advocate for drugs addressing female sexual dysfunction. And these non-profits are getting paid by the “profits” for participation this “grass roots” campaign to approve this drug to help women with “Low Sexual Libido”.
This shows the nonsense of women, how far removed they are from the reality of their own sexuality and the trap that they have built themselves. They refused to address the dimorphism of human sexuality and their need for masculine males. They have no libido because they are not attracted to their partner. They have gone through the 4 years and come out the other side. I would be many of these “Low Libido” women are probably HB4-5, and are repulsed by the man that wants them. Hypergamy. Others are in relationships with men that play the Dr Phil rules for marriage and have become Low T males as function of their relationship with their wives and their roles at non-physical work.
I you have a “Low Libido” woman here’s what you do.
First you immediately begin to lift weights, heavy weight. It is the thing that comes up first when googling for “Building Testosterone”.
And second you deploy Dread.
https://heartiste.wordpress.com/2008/03/27/dread/
The first better describes the whats and hows of dread game; the second describes the “whys”, the psychology of it.
And read the Devlin essay linked above. It will explain your wife’s behavior to you, or even better, it will explain your ex-wives behavior.
This is an obscure little paper about Animal Polyandry. Don’t get hung up on some idea of polygamy when thinking of polyandry. This isn’t some woman living with more than one men. This is better though of as “Mr Right Now and what can he do for me.” Polyandry, after researching it, to me is the natural sexual order of women. Devlin writes about the effect of serial polyandry, what the reality of modern marriage is serial polyandry. This paper describes the benefits of it to the female.
http://www.liv.ac.uk/mbe/pdf/03_Hosken.pdf
The only male defense against it is Dread.
* …hypergamy if allowed to run riot generally encourages men to take short cuts to Alpha: ever greater doses of violence. Ever wonder WHY Black neighborhoods have much greater amounts of violence than White, Asian, even Mexican neighborhoods? Or why during Segregation Black violence was still higher than White neighborhoods but much lower than today?
Black women don’t need to self-moderate (or have it done for them) hypergamy to select a provider who will stick with them and their kids for a lifetime. Thus, selection for thugs and thuggish behavior. Read Jill Leovy’s account of murder in South Central (“Ghettoside: A True Story of Murder in America”) and you will see an astonishing amount of the murders are committed simply to increase the status and thus chance of sex for the perpetrator.
Anti-colonialists and Black Nationalists both made the point that no society can be stable with great masses of people outside any interest and ownership. Female hypergamy unrestrained means a few Big Men monopolizing all the women and every other man a serf/slave/peasant. A female paradise to be sure, but one marked by violence at every turn since the quickest way and often only way for men on the bottom to have sex and children is a bloody peasant revolt, pillage, plunder, etc. Mohammedism is a good example of that — Mohammed took the tribes of Arabia, disunited, and united them in killing other men and taking their women as sex slaves.
The Western Way of Life has been to leave women mostly free, but also responsible. If a woman chose badly because some bad boy made her tingle down there but said bad boy ended up on the gallows, her children would starve and so would she. She might have resentfully chosen instead some dutiful “boring” but nice man who would only work himself to death providing for her and children, hating every minute. But that society moved ever forwards into more peace and greater prosperity.
And there is another critical aspect. The Western Way of War, as noted by Victor Davis Hanson, has been shock infantry battles often lasting hours or even a day, sometimes more. [Much longer in modern wars.] This means a premium on not slaves in battle, but free men fighting on their own account in slaughter as what amounts to one long harvest. Initiative, resilience, staying in line with one’s fellows not being a “warrior” prone to heady advances and panicked retreats mattered most. Men with their own wives secure will fight like that; men simply drone slaves turn and run at the first opportunity.
But hey, wars have been abolished forever along with violence because Obama! or something.
* “I’m not sure how women wanting to upgrade their men is a bad thing”
It hinges on whether they are open to short term relationships. If a girl takes the attitude that she will have sex with the most desirable man who is willing to sleep with her, regardless of long-term commitment, what will normally happen is that she will have a series of short term relationships in her twenties and early 30s until men lose interest in her.
All along the way, she will complain that “men only want one thing” and fruitlessly read Cosmo articles on “how to get your man to commit.” Ultimately she will wonder “why are there no good men left?”
Why is this? It’s the simple mathematics of hypergamy. If 80% of girls want the top 5% of men, most of the girls will get laid (there are plenty of men happy to oblige them), but it’s not mathematically possible for even a majority of those girls to end up married to the man who was willing to have sex with them.
On the other hand, if girls hold out for marriage, it’s not a big deal but at the same time it’s much more difficult in such a situation for anyone to “marry up.” Not without polygamy. Again, it’s just the mathematics of the situation.
LAT: San Bernardino: Broken City
I’ve seen this story promoted on the LATimes.com for a few days but until now I’ve avoided reading it because I’m assuming that the fall of San Bernadino is largely a matter of changed racial demographics.
For instance, there’s nothing wrong with schools in the United States. By race, Americans do better than their fellow racial groups around the world. America’s lower test scores and higher drop-out rate are simply a function of America’s changed racial demographics.
In his book Bad Students, Not Bad Schools, Robert Weissberg writes: “America’s educational woes just reflect our current demographic mix of students.”
Without having read the Los Angeles Times article, but simply by looking at this Wikipedia graph, I am going to assume that when San Bernadino was 97.8% white in 1940, it was a pleasant city, but now that it is 60% Latino, 15% black and only 19% non-hispanic white, it is hell aka a lot like Mexico, Central America and most of South America aka it reflects its changed racial demographics.
I begin the Times article with the subhead:
San Bernardino, once a sturdy, middle class “All-America City,” is now bankrupt, the poorest city of its size in California, and a symbol of the nation’s worst urban woes.
Well, yeah, that’s just what I would expect from its change in racial demographics.
From the Times:
Four decades ago, this motel boasted a cheery coffee shop, a heated pool, valet parking and palm trees that swayed in the hard wind coming over the Cajon Pass.
Now it’s a way station for broken people in a broken city.
As other California cities lift themselves out of the recession, San Bernardino, once a blue-collar town with a solid middle class, has become the poorest city of its size in the state and a distillation of America’s urban woes.
* Monterey Park is also predominantly Nonwhite just like San Bernardino, the difference is Monterey Park’s Nonwhites are of a higher IQ stock than San Bernardino’s Nonwhites. Monterey Park has a lot of Tiger Moms while San Bernardino has a lot of low IQ Vato Cholos who say HEY HOMES a lot.
* To me the most interesting aspect of this post is the fact that from 2000-2013 California’s median household income declined from ~$70,000 to ~$60,000. It certainly wasn’t losing any billionaires over that period.
People are going to look around this country one day and wonder what the hell happened. In the late 20th and early 21st Centuries, political correctness, self-righteousness and greed colluded to utterly and completely destroy the richest, most powerful country in the world. The speed of that destruction is stupefying. To see a country, in the space of a single lifetime, altered so completely and irrevocably is a sight rare in history. And in our lifetimes it will not be one country destroyed, but the entirety of the West.
In the blink of an eye. Gone.
* My family and I had a house in Lake Arrowhead from the 70′s thru the 80′s. When we arrived, you could rent a sailboat, ski boat, fishing boat, or a canoe, and traverse the entire lake to your heart’s content. If you were 18 or over, you could rent out what you wanted.
As San Bernardino changed, so did Lake Arrowhead. Now the lake is on an economic/social “lockdown.” No boat rentals allowed. I’m guessing it has something to do with the new “tourists” from San Bernadino–would you really want to rent a boat to a bunch of gang members? Also, it’s likely boat owners don’t want gang members floating by on a rental boat to survey properties for potential “visits.” There was no way around renting to cholos, so they just eliminated the whole enterprise. Nobody allowed on the lake except property owners. You can rent out a ski instructor who will pull you with his boat, or go on a paddle-wheel boat, but nothing unaccompanied. They also closed down the public beach.
It’s frightening to think that hiking deep into the forest, as I liked to do, could bring you some serious grief if you happened upon a Mexican pot grove. To me, that issue changed that place forever. I’d never let a kid go hiking alone up there. They’ve had swat teams dropping from helicopters up there to challenge the Mexican drug farmers. I used to hike up there as a kid. I wouldn’t let kids hike up there now. Stumbling upon a pot farm up there would lead to unpleasant outcomes.
It’s a shame. Lake Arrowhead used to be called “Little Switzerland,” and it really was. I went up there a year ago. It wasn’t pleasant. Once a vibrant community, a little shangri la, now pretty depressing.
RIP Lake Arrowhead.
* It’s hard for an easterner to keep track but didn’t Vallejo make the news a couple of years ago for the transcendent corruption of its political leadership. It was certainly a city of similar vibrant diversity many of whose political class are now in the slammer. The issue of corruption and race/ethnicity is pretty much a taboo topic away from sites like this but wherever you find serious corruption and malfeasance in the public sector it seems to be almost a natural law that elements of our non-white population are playing a major role.
* Civilizations seem to change in a manner similar to punctuated equilibrium in evolution. Things seem stable for a while and then Bam! something changes in the environment and the organism changes so rapidly that we can’t find intermediary iterations in the fossil record. In our case the Bam! was the year 1965 and the evolution is a devolution.
* The vast majority of the Hispanic population in bankrupt San Bernardino, California do not look like the Spain national football team, if they did than San Bernardino would not have filed for bankruptcy.
Also in another thread I was talking about how 18 million Jews have produced more successful high IQ individuals than the world’s 154 million Mexicans.
Mexicans have always represented quantity (their huge numbers) but Mexicans have never represented quality. There is a reason why Americans who work in a career field that requires having a high IQ do not see Mexicans as a threat to their jobs. American doctors and American engineers do not see Mexicans as a threat to their jobs.
Jewish Guilt
I often hear Jews talking about “Jewish guilt” but I don’t remember meeting a guilt-ridden Jew (though I knew a lot of Christians like that). Guilt carries a pretty clear mark on someone. What am I missing? Jews, in general, seem to carry around far less guilt than goyim, particularly about sex, money and self-assertion. What Jew feels guilty about banging shiksas, making money through dodgy means, and running after the spotlight? I’ve never meet such a Jew. I only see “guilt” when they get caught and publicly shamed, and then the “guilt” is for making Jews look bad and consequently getting ostracized in the Jewish community, not for the sins in themselves.
Call Me Black
If Luke Ford and Jenna Jameson can convert to Judaism, why can’t a white woman call herself black and lead the NAACP?
You Don’t Exist

* An Orthodox Jewish friend the other day told me, “You know Aussies. They hate everyone who isn’t Aussie.” Well, that’s largely how it goes for all strongly identifying in-groups. * “Haredi writers of history claim to know better than the great rabbis of the past how the latter should have behaved. Those great rabbis do not serve as models for the present. Instead, the present and its ideology serve as models for the great rabbis. Haredi historiography becomes a tale of what observant Jews, and especially great rabbis, did, but only provided that these actions accord with, or can be made to accord with, current Haredi doctrine. The historians do not try to understand the gedolim; they stand over the gedolim. Haredi ideology of fealty to the great rabbis works at cross purposes with the sanitized history of those rabbis.”

Rabbis: An Anti-Semitic Incident Adds to Austria’s Shame
Rabbis Abraham Cooper and Yitzchok Adlerstein of the Simon Wiesenthal Center write for Newsweek:
Now comes word that a landlord in Vienna is “offended” by the display of an Israeli flag inside a window of an apartment first placed there in celebration of Israel’s participation in the Eurovision songfest. The landlord also informed the Jewish tenant that to avoid eviction he must not only take down the flag but also remove his mezuzah (the small case holding Biblical verses) affixed his doorposts.
Balancing the rights of one person in a democracy to display his pride in a member state of the U.N. with another citizen’s right to hate ought to be fairly easy to sort out for the authorities. But this is 2015 Europe, where the rights of Jewish citizens are not always protected.
Please correct me if I am wrong, but I don’t recall the Simon Wiesenthal Center protesting Jews chanting “Death to the Arabs!”
Did these rabbis publicly protest Jews spitting on Christians in Jerusalem?
In their Jewish nationalism op-eds against Gentile nationalisms, do these rabbis ever note that Torah makes no provision for non-Jewish citizenship in a Torah state of Israel?
There is no mitzvah in Judaism to fight anti-Semitism. This bullying of Austria by these rabbis has no precedence in our sacred texts.
Why should a landlord not have the right to make the rules for the use of his own property? Why would any nation want its citizens flying the flag of a foreign power? Do these rabbis seriously think that Israelis would be more tolerant of a Palestinian flag waving in a Jewish-owned home rented to Arabs?
It seems like chutzpa to me that these rabbis can get an op/ed in Newsweek protesting a solitary guy in Austria exercising his property rights.
Jerusalem Post reporter Melanie Lidman tweeted pictures of two members of the Israeli Knesset, Aryeh Eldad and Michael Ben Ari, taking shots of vodka and attempting to burn a Palestinian flag outside the U.N. headquarters in Jerusalem. Police tore the flag away before it could be lit up, reportedly worried that such an act would incite riots, Lidman tweeted. Another group of protesters began chanting “There will never be a Palestinian state!”
I take it for granted that Esau (sometimes) hates Jacob just as Jacob sometimes hates Esau. Jews will always have different interests from non-Jews. It seems to me like an impossibility for any other group to have identical interests with Jews (or blacks or Muslims or Chinese, etc). Therefore, it is inevitable that will always be conflict to varying degrees between Jews and non-Jews.
The two rabbis write:
But Austria has never come to terms with its role in the Holocaust, leaving it with a trifecta of Jew hatred: traditional anti-Semitism, the new virulent anti-Israelism and the so-called secondary anti-Semitism caused by the Holocaust itself.
Jews have never come to terms with their role as Stalin’s willing executioners. Jews have never come to terms with their roles in the Soviet Union’s genocides. This is not weird or peculiar to Jews or Austrians. No group likes to come to terms with its defects.
Have Jews come to terms with the million Jews in America prior to 1950 who were communists and socialists? (Nathan Glaser, 1967) Have Jews come to terms with all the American scientists who passed nuclear secrets to Joseph Stalin were Jewish? Have Jews come to terms with a Jewish spy (Jonathan Pollard) stealing the crown jewels of America’s nuclear secrets and giving them to Israel which then traded them to America’s arch-enemy, the Soviet Union, for the release of Soviet Jews?
Do you think the direction of America’s culture is positive? If so, you can thank Jews. If you think the sum of America’s entertainment industry is positive, you can again thank Jews. If you think Hollywood is destructive, you can blame Jews. If you think the disproportionate role that Jews have played in promoting minority rights (blacks, gays, trannies, Muslims, etc) in the West at the expense of the white Christian majority is a good thing, you can thank Jews. If you think America becoming more multicultural and more divided is a good thing, you can, in part, thank Jews. If you think these trends are bad, you can blame Jews.
A tiny number of influential Jews will represent all Jews in the non-Jewish mind in the same way that the tiny number of Muslim terrorists represent Muslims in non-Muslim minds. Few Jews are radical but many radicals are Jews and this will shape how non-Jews regard Jews. Few Jews were communists but many communists were Jews. Few Jews are big capitalists but many big capitalists are Jews. Few Jews are important in Hollywood but of the important people in Hollywood, about half are Jews. Ergo, what these tiny numbers of Jews in important positions do that affects the world will shape how Jews are treated akin to the way Muslim terrorists affect the way Muslims are treated.
Only a tiny number of Nazis executed the Holocaust, yet that genocide profoundly shaped how Germany was viewed post 1945 because the media and academia focused on it as history’s greatest crime. Only a tiny number of Jews carried out Stalin’s genocides, but because this is never mentioned in the media and rarely in academia, it has had little effect on how Jews are viewed.
Jews are no more eager than any other group to come to terms with the bad things they’ve done.
There is nothing in being a rabbi that makes them expert in Austrian politics, property rights, and culture.
Jews want to be a separate nation and simultaneously enjoy all the privileges of belonging to any nation where they choose to take up residence just like many powerful men want to get married but still play the field. This approach will inevitably cause conflict and tragedy (both in the world and in the home). In a free country, Jews will dominate because of their superior intelligence, industry and cohesiveness. Non-Jews, however, do not like to be dominated by superior Jewish intelligence, industry and cohesiveness, so they preserve their Gentile lands and their Gentile cultures by all means necessary, including the persecution of Jews.
The two rabbis conclude:
One landlord does not a nation make, but its leaders’ failure to denounce another outrageous attempt to drive Jewish identity underground will only add another sordid chapter to a nation’s unresolved anti-Jewish legacy.
So unless the state interferes with the landlord’s right to the use of his own property in the way he sees fit, then Hitler has won? This tiny choice by a landlord in the use of his own property is “outrageous”? How is Austria’s “unresolved anti-Jewish legacy” any different from Judaism “unresolved anti-Gentile legacy”? Different groups have different interests. Jews see themselves as a separate people. All strong in-group identity, including the Jewish identity, creates suspicion of and hostility towards outsiders. The stronger the Austrian in his uniquely Austrian identity, the more likely he is to have negative feelings towards Jews just as the stronger the Jew in his Jewish identity, the more likely he is to have negative views of non-Jews. Haredi Jews tend to have more negative views of Gentiles than do Modern Orthodox Jews who in turn have more negative views that Reform Jews who in turn have more negative views than completely secular Jews.
How would Jewish landlords in Jerusalem react to non-Jewish Jerusalem tenants posting Christian or Palestinian symbols on their doors? Do you think Jewish landlords might have a problem with a goy tenant posting of a cross or a PLO or Hamas flag above a door? If I were a landlord in Israel, I would not want my non-Jewish tenants publicly displaying the flags and symbols of other countries and religions. The Torah makes no provision for non-Jewish citizenship in the Jewish state of Israel. The Torah makes no provision for the free practice of any religion in Israel but Judaism. Yet these rabbis feel free to demand that the goyim not act in the same way that the Torah commands Jews to act in the Jewish state.
The story of Purim celebrates Jews’ escaping from destruction at the hands of their enemies. Near the end of the Purim story, 75,000 enemies of the Jews are slaughtered. Purim is a joyous Jewish holiday. Not many Jews feel bad about the slaughter of their enemies. So why should Jews expect Austrians to feel bad about the slaughter of their enemies?
Different groups have different interests. The interests of Jews and the interests of Austrians frequently clash. It is probably in the Jewish interest for Gentile countries to be multicultural and tolerant of separatist minorities such as Jews. It is in the interest of Gentile countries, however, to be cohesive. I can’t think of any example in history where Jews exceeded 5% of the population of a Gentile country and there wasn’t tremendous hatred of Jews.
Douglas Rushkoff, a proud Jew and the author of Nothing Sacred: The Truth About Judaism, says: “The thing that makes Judaism dangerous to everybody, to every race, to every nation, to every idea, is that we smash things that aren’t true. We don’t believe in the boundaries of nation states, we don’t believe in these ideas of individual gods that protect individual people, these are all artificial constructions and Judaism really teaches us how to see that. In a sense, our detractors have us right in that we are a corrosive force, we’re breaking down the false gods of all nations and all people because they’re not real and that’s very upsetting to people.”
It doesn’t bother me that some Jews don’t want to come to terms with their past. No group does. Not even Austrians. Every group, except pathological whites, puts their group interest first. Every group views itself as the center of the world.
In a 2006 lecture, Tom Wolfe said: “Each individual adopts a set of values which, if truly absolute in the world – so ordained by some almighty force – would make not that individual but his group…the best of all possible groups, the best of all inner circles.”
Every strong group identity brings with it, as a general rule with many individual exceptions, lessened concern about outsiders.
These two rabbis from the Simon Wiesenthal Center abuse the language of universal morality to try to get an unfair tribal advantage by keeping the goyim on the defensive and uniting Jews with a message that much of the world hates them. Pre-Traumatic Syndrome is what much of American Judaism consists of these days (but this finds little basis in Torah). The religion of the Holocaust is a great living (but finds no basis in Torah). There’s no business like Shoah business.
The only honorable forms of argument are to contest an opponent’s facts or logic. The two rabbis don’t bother with honorable forms of argument, however. They just heap on the “anti-Semitic” slur against Austria without ever considering similar anti-Gentile currents in Jewish life.
“Rabbi Abraham Cooper is associate dean of the Simon Wiesenthal Center. Rabbi Yitzchok Adlerstein is director of interfaith affairs for the Simon Wiesenthal Center.”
The headline on this Newsweek essays is: “An Anti-Semitic Incident Adds to Austria’s Shame”
Do the authors regard negative views and acts by Jews against non-Jews as adding to Judaism’s shame? To Jews’ shame? To Israel’s shame? What limits on property rights do the rabbis propose? The inference from this essay is that anything anti-Jewish should be crushed but the rabbis apparently have no concern about anti-Gentile acts and attitudes among Jews.
Michael Medved (1996, 37) writes that “it makes no sense at all to try to deny the reality of Jewish power and prominence in popular culture. Any list of the most influential production executives at each of the major movie studios will produce a heavy majority of recognizably Jewish names. This prominent Jewish role is obvious to anyone who follows news reports from Tinsel Town or even bothers to read the credits on major movies or television shows.”
The name of Medved’s book here was Hollywood vs America. In other words, Jewish Hollywood vs America. How much effort have these two rabbis given to combating Jewish Hollywood’s frequently hostile attitude to Gentile America?
All nationalisms require discrimination. If you love your group, it means you put other groups second. Jews are no exception to these rules.
From The American Interest:
Will there ever be a TV show that portrays Christians as normal, decent, struggling and complicated human beings? Certainly not in ABC’s new line-up. Reviewing the premiere of “GCB” for the Washington Post, Elizabeth Tenety describes what passes today for serious, empathetic programming about people of faith:
After mom Amanda Vaughn loses her Ponzi-scheming husband in a sexual rendezvous-induced car accident, the former “mean girl” moves with her two children from California to her “God-often-speaks-to-me-through-Gucci” mother’s house in Dallas…
[The show] is one part Church Lady, one part Desperate Dallas Housewives.
Carlene Cockburn, played by Kristin Chenoweth, is Vaughn’s high school nemesis and the show’s faith-filled antagonist, delivering witty one-liners…and Dallas diva-ness in a series that alludes to the excesses of Christian culture and depicts how religion is used, at least in some circles, to justify immoral behavior.
Any racial or ethnic group in this country as negatively portrayed on primetime TV would be up in arms–and rightly so. To be clear, Via Meadia does not object to the depiction of religious hypocrisy, an all-too-common phenomenon that is certainly worthy of dramatic treatment. Rather, we take exception to the fact that Christians in the media are almost uniformly shown as hypocrites, idiots, bigots and so on. As Tenety rightly asks of “GCB” (by now, you can guess the acronym), “where is the Christian love?”
Contemporary television and film producers go out of their way to paint moving, sympathetic portraits of everyone from bullied gay teenagers to sex addicts and Mafia wives, but somehow run up a massive empathy deficit when it comes to men and women of faith. And the occasional show that attempts to seriously grapple with religious themes, like NBC’s excellent “Kings” — which brilliantly retold the biblical story of King David in a modern setting — are poorly promoted and quickly canceled.
Christians, like other groups, will have to organize and work to get fair treatment from the media. Respect isn’t something they give you out of pity or a sense of justice. It is something you earn by thoughtful and effective organization and action, both political and cultural.
And if you want something done right, it’s often best to do it yourself. Christians and other faith groups maligned by the entertainment industry might look to the example of Israeli productions like Srugim. The show, a dramedy which realistically and sympathetically portrayed the lives of young religious Jews, was produced by filmmakers trained in the religious Ma’aleh film school and won the Israeli equivalent of the Emmys.
The vicious denigration of people of faith by so many cheap television programs and cheesy films is not and should not be something religious people take for granted or ignore. Other groups have changed the way they are portrayed in the media by a combination of shrewdly applied pressure and by promoting and developing talent within the community that can replace prejudice and schlock with compelling drama and true to life work.
If Christians don’t do this for ourselves, nobody will do it for us. It is time to stand up.
“I’m not scared of you ‘cause I got God by my side. And He told me that you ain’t worth nothin’… and He wants me to smite you. She-devil…that’s what you are. You’re the devil and I’m the angel of God …’cause God loves me. He don’t love you. ‘Cause you ain’t worthy of God’s love. You ain’t worthy of nobody’s love.”
This bit of dialogue was spat during the last three minutes of Orange is the New Black’s season 1 finale as antagonist Tiffany “Pennsatucky” Doggett tried to stab protagonist Piper Chapman with a wooden cross that had been sharpened to a point.
Yeah…
It’s a hard scene to digest and an even more difficult one to fathom actually happening. And while this is certainly an extreme example, it’s the type of behavior the writers of scripted television and films seem to assign any Christian characters they deem worthy of screen time.
Judgmental, ruthless, ignorant, empty of understanding or grace and with a heavy Southern accent—this is how the entertainment industry chooses to portray a large majority of Christians. Whether it’s a comedy such as Community, a “dramedy” like Orange is the New Black or an off-the-deep-end drama like Scandal, it just does not matter. If there’s a Christian character bouncing around, more than likely they’re going to viciously judge, ridicule, argue with or straight up murder the faithless, more secular characters, all while sporting a straight-from-the-trailer-park Southern accent.
But why?
Why is it that a very large majority of fictional Christian characters fed to us by mainstream media are so completely and insanely dogmatic?
Why is it that a very large majority of fictional Christian characters fed to us by mainstream media are so completely and insanely dogmatic? There is no grace, no understanding, no forgiveness in these characters.
Even on a show with lighter fare like Community, where the singular Christian character isn’t as rigid or downright mean (or Southern) as other shows, Shirley Bennett’s faith is still frequently played as a flaw.
Why are these types of character models accepted as the norm when representing today’s Christian?
REPORT: The 5 Worst Portrayals of Christians in Films
Gee, why does Hollywood portray Christians so negatively? I can’t figure that out. Why the anti-Christian bigotry? Is there a nation putting out entertainment with an unresolved anti-Christian legacy?
Dennis Prager writes May 14, 2014:
On May 5, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 5-4 in “Town of Greece v. Galloway” that the town’s practice of beginning legislative sessions with prayers does not violate the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment.
As summarized in the opening words of the ruling:
“Since 1999, the monthly town board meetings in Greece, New York, have opened with a roll call, a recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance, and a prayer given by clergy selected from the congregations listed in a local directory. While the prayer program is open to all creeds, nearly all of the local congregations are Christian; thus, nearly all of the participating prayer givers have been too.”
I believe it is significant that three of the four dissenting justices are the three Jews on the Supreme Court — Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen Breyer and Elena Kagan. So, too, one of the two women (the “respondents” at the Supreme Court level) who filed the original lawsuit against the town of Greece is a Jew. And Jewish organizations, including the American Jewish Committee, the Union for Reform Judaism, the National Council of Jewish Women, the Central Conference of American Rabbis and the Anti-Defamation League, had filed amicus curiae briefs in support of the women.
This is all significant because the Jewish justices, the Jewish woman who brought the suit against the New York town and all the Jewish organizations that filed briefs in support of the two respondents represent a battle that many American Jews and Jewish organizations have been waging for decades against public expressions of God and religion. American Jews have become the most active ethnic or religious group in America attempting to remove God and religion from the public square.
Why is this the case? Why have American Jews been so active in fighting any expressions of God and religion in the country that has been the most hospitable to us in our long history?
Nearly every Jew who does so will give this answer: In order to fight for the separation of church and state in America.
But let’s be honest. If there were no such concept in America — and in fact, the phrase “separation of church and state” never appears in the Constitution — most American Jews would be just as opposed to public expressions of faith.
So, then, once again: Why are American Jews so opposed to public religious expressions? Moreover, this opposition exists not only to government-sponsored religious expression. For example, many Jews are avid supporters of substituting “Happy Holidays” for “Merry Christmas” or “holiday party” for “Christmas party.”
I think there are four reasons.
One is antipathy to Christianity. Most Jews just don’t like Christianity. They associate it with centuries of anti-Semitism, and therefore believe that a de-Christianized America will be a much more secure place for them.
Second, many American Jews feel “excluded” when Christianity is expressed in public.
A third reason is antipathy to religion generally. Most Jews are little more positively disposed to Orthodox Judaism than they are to traditional Christianity.
That leads to reason four: a fervent belief in secularism. Most American Jews believe in secularism as fervently as Orthodox Jews believe in the Torah or traditional Christians believe in Christ.
Roman Catholic William A. Donohue writes in 2005:
Ever since Rabbi Shmuley Boteach and I squared off against each other on the December 8 edition of MSNBC’s “Scarborough Country,” there has been considerable chatter over my comment, “Hollywood is controlled by secular Jews who hate Christianity in general and Catholicism in particular.”
Context is always important, so let’s take a look at it. Just before I spoke, Boteach mocked “The Passion of the Christ,” saying, “It really should win the World Wrestling Federation Oscar for best movie. It’s a guy for two hours being kicked, beaten, his blood gushing everywhere. It’s just a diabolical, criminal, violent mess.” Thanks, Shmuley, for being so sensitive about that “guy.”
In the same segment that I made this remark, I also said the following: “You have got secular Jews. You have got embittered ex-Catholics, including a lot of ex-Catholic priests who hate the Catholic Church, wacko Protestants in the same group….” Later in the debate, I said, “There are secularists from every ethnic and religious stock,” and when people talk about Hollywood, they are “talking mostly about secular Jews.”
In short, I did not single out secular Jews as some have said. Nonetheless, I do regret using the verb “controlled,” and that is because it suggests that there is some kind of cabal among secular Jews. That’s nonsense. But is there a segment of the secular Jewish community that is anti-Catholic? Absolutely.
The day after our debate, Boteach was kind enough to have me on his radio show to mix it up again. During the course of that conversation, I admitted that there was a segment of the Catholic community that is anti-Semitic. I then asked him if he would agree that there is a segment of the secular Jewish community that is anti-Catholic, and he denied it without equivocation. That’s also nonsense.
Now consider what the New York Times said about “The Passion” on June 24: “Significantly, in the movie industry, which tends to be liberal and secular in outlook, as well as disproportionately Jewish, few people interviewed about ‘The Passion’ said they had actually seen the movie.” Is this not a softer way of saying what I said, at least in part?
The “Today Show,” Newsweek magazine, the Los Angeles Times and other media outlets have all reported on the Hollywood animus against “The Passion.” As one Oscar-campaign veteran put it, “a lot of older Academy voters, who are largely Jewish, refuse to even see this movie.” Tom O’Neil, who is one of the most prominent students of the Oscars, recently described what happened when the Mel Gibson film was being considered by the experts: “At this religious movie, there was more cussing and swearing by Oscar voters than has ever been seen in an Academy screening before.” This says it all.
The point is that no one seriously disputes the fact that Hollywood is a heavily secular Jewish community. And while some may want to defend Hollywood against the charge that it is anti-Christian in general and anti-Catholic in particular, those who do so carry a heavy burden. It is not for nothing that Hollywood has been turning out one Christian-bashing film after another for the past few decades.
Indeed, a report released on December 16 by the Parents Television Council shows that Hollywood has a real problem with religion. The study of CBS, NBC, ABC, Fox, WB, UPN and Pax contained 2,344 treatments of religion constituting 2,385 hours of primetime television. L. Brent Bozell, the president of the organization, concluded that “anti-Catholic bigotry” was “rampant” on network shows.
I am not upset that Jews tend to have some anti-Christian feelings and I am similarly not upset that Christians and other groups of non-Jews tend to have some anti-Jewish feelings. I don’t see how things could be otherwise. The interests of Jews and non-Jews frequently conflict. Hence there’s often going to be conflict and tragedy.
Philip Weiss writes February 26, 2013:
Below is video of the infamous “you want to work in this town?” joke about Jews running Hollywood, delivered by a teddy bear called “Ted” created by Seth MacFarlane, at the Academy Awards Sunday night. It’s getting a lot of attention. Note that the talking bear says it’s important to give money to Israel to work in Hollywood, and that Mark Wahlberg is hurt by being Catholic– before Wahlberg shuts him up.
The Wiesenthal Center is enraged. An Open Zion columnist calls it an “anti-Semitic canard.” The ADL also condemns age-old anti-Jewish stereotypes.
This is a slightly absurd conversation. The overwhelming Jewish numbers in Hollywood are no canard; and in a diverse society, people evidently want to talk about that, so they joke about it (as they joke that the Israel lobby runs Congress). JJ Goldberg at the Forward, who (while arguing defensively that the joke has the “power to kill. Right now, in today’s world, given the worldwide audience of the Oscars, it’s like shouting ‘fire’ in a crowded planet”) concedes that “the strong presence of Jews in Hollywood surely has some sociological and cultural implications.”
If anybody can genuinely be said to control Tinseltown, it’s probably the 25 people who run the 12 main film studios—that is, the chairman (in one case, two co-chairmen) and president of each. Of those 25, 21 are Jewish, or 84%. That’s simple math. You could define “control” differently—throw in the top agents and producers, leading directors, most bankable stars and so on—and the proportion of Jews would drop, but it probably wouldn’t get down anywhere near the 50% mark. There’s a reason why Nate & Al’s stays in business.
And when Brando was called on the carpet in 1996 for asserting on Larry King that Jews “own Hollywood,” 19 of 20 top studio execs were Jewish, Goldberg says.
The issue in my mind is whether we’re all grownup enough to talk about these things without having pogroms, and I think we are. I’ve written here before that Jewish kinship networks are important professionally; most of my work in journalism has come from Jews with whom I share culture and language (very much the way Jodi Kantor got her job at the New York Times). People have a right to discuss these matters in a critical manner: in the ’60s sociologist E. Digby Baltzell, himself a WASP, helped break down Protestant discrimination against Jews in board rooms and back rooms with a book bewailing discrimination called The Protestant Establishment: Aristocracy and Caste in America. Nick Lemann also ascribed a religious character to that former establishment when he called it “the Episcopacy” in his book on the meritocracy. So– what’s good for the goose……
REPORT: Kevin Sorbo explains why more Christian movies aren’t made: Jews run Hollywood
“I sort of understand how they never want to deal with the New Testament in Hollywood, because it’s pretty much, you know, run by the world of the, um, Jewish population,” Sorbo said, chuckling. “At the same time, at least get someone that has, you know, believes that the potential is there, that it could be a real story.”
Black CNN Anchor Calls Dallas Gunman’s Actions as ‘Courageous and Brave’
CNN anchor Fredricka Whitfield said Saturday: “It was very courageous and brave, if not crazy as well, to open fire on the police headquarters…”
I mention she is black because blacks and whites tend to have opposite attitudes towards police and towards America.
* Report: Divide between blacks and whites on police runs deep
* Gallup Review: Black and White Attitudes Toward Police
* Whites are more confident than ever that their local police treat blacks fairly
* On racial issues, America is divided both black and white and red and blue

America, like every other nation, including Israel, would be stronger if it were more homogeneous. From a Torah perspective, there is no room for non-Jewish citizenship in a Torah state of Israel. I don’t know why any nation would allow strangers (to the dominant race and religion of the nation) to be citizens. Racial and religious differences tend to lead to conflict and tragedy.
Cooper: World’s silent acquiescence of Palestinian Jew-hatred is helping to destroy any chance for peace
At a graduation ceremony of a kindergarten, sponsored by a women’s charity organization in the West Bank town of Anabta, preschoolers wearing uniforms and carrying toy guns performed a song routine. A picture of PLO founder, Yasser Arafat is visible on stage.
Here is an excerpt of one of the songs these little kids performed:
“On the mountains, behind the hills, within the valleys – you will be defeated, you will be defeated. Whether you come by land, by sea, or by air – you will be crushed, you will be crushed. If you stretch your hand, it will be chopped off. If you just look with your eye, it will be gouged out. The defeated army will be too terrified to come back. We come for you before, and woe betide you if we come back again. You come to this land alive, but you will leave it as body part. On the mountains, behind the hills, within the valleys – you will be defeated, you will be defeated. Whether you come by land, by sea, or by air – you will be crushed, you will be crushed.”
…It is past due for Presidents Obama, Hollande, Prime Minister Cameron, and Chancellor Merkel to tell the Palestinians: If you actually want your own state, then prove- to your Israeli neighbors in word and deed– that Palestinians are finally ready to tell their young that a state means embracing peace, not preparing for the next war.
Wow. That song that Palestinian preschoolers sang curdles my blood. It’s just pure hate. Jews would never say anything like that.
I mean, sure, we do pray three times a day in the Amidah: “And for slanderers let there be no hope; and may all Your enemies be cut down speedily. May you speedily uproot, smash, cast, down, and humble the wanton sinners — speedily in our days. Blessed are you, HaShem, Who breaks enemies and humbles wanton sinners.”
Little Jewish kids recite those words.
What exactly is the difference between what Jews pray three times and what these Palestinian kids sang?
At the end of the morning prayers (Shacharit), Jews say the Six Remembrances, including:
“You shall remember what Amalek did to you on the way, when you went out of Egypt, how he happened upon you on the way and cut off all the stragglers at your rear, when you were faint and weary, and did not fear G‑d. [Therefore,] it will be, when the L‑rd your G-d grants you respite from all your enemies around [you] in the land which the L‑rd, your G‑d, gives to you as an inheritance to possess, that you shall obliterate the remembrance of Amalek from beneath the heavens. You shall not forget!”
So if the Palestinians repeated this prayer but substituted “Jews” and “Israel” for “Amalek”, would that be hate speech? How does this prayer sound now? “You shall remember what the Jews did to you on the way, when you went out of Egypt, how he happened upon you on the way and cut off all the stragglers at your rear, when you were faint and weary, and did not fear G‑d. [Therefore,] it will be, when the L‑rd your G-d grants you respite from all your enemies around [you] in the land which the L‑rd, your G‑d, gives to you as an inheritance to possess, that you shall obliterate the remembrance of Israel from beneath the heavens. You shall not forget!”
“Amalek” is a flexible moral category that Jews sometimes use as a shorthand for their enemies.
Wikipedia notes: “In the religious teaching of Meir Kahane (1932 – 1990), Amalek is a mythical enemy of Israel, embodied in different actual enemies throughout Jewish history. Since God and the Jewish people, according to Kahane, are ontologically related, the contemporary enemies of Israel are allegedly threatening existence of God himself. In the contemporary meaning, “Amalek” refers to the hostile Gentiles who are to be revenged for the near annihilation of Jews and their God, or calls for the analogous actions in future. Metaphysics of Kahane, borrowed from the earlier Jewish authors (Judah Halevy, Abraham Isaac Kook), provided justification for the radical movement known as Kahanism, presently banned in Israel.”
How about when Jews chant “Death to the Arabs“? Is that hate speech?
I have no problem with Jews chanting “Death to the Arabs” and I have no problem with Arabs and Muslims chanting “Death to the Jews.” Any healthy strongly identifying Arab or Muslim is going to have negative feelings about Jews, in part because they have a Jewish state on land that Arabs and Muslims believe belongs to them. Any healthy strongly identifying Jew is going to have some negative feelings about Gentiles, particularly Arabs and Muslims. A strongly identifying Jap is likely to have some negative feelings towards Koreans and Chinese and strongly identifying Koreans are likely to dislike Japan and strongly identifying Chinese are likely to dislike Japan.
An Orthodox Jewish friend the other day told me, “You know Aussies. They hate everyone who isn’t Aussie.” Well, that’s largely how it goes for all strongly identifying in-groups. They tend to have negative feelings about outsiders in proportion to how strongly they identify with their own in-group.
I don’t think Jews or Palestinians are wicked for having enemies. Every strong in-group identity carries with it increased suspicion of outsiders. As a Jew grows in his Judaism, he typically develops more negative feelings about outsiders, just as when a Muslim grows in his Islam, he also typically develops more negative feelings about outsiders, just as when Aryans grow in their Aryan identity, they typically develop more negative feelings about outsiders.
Every group has enemies. Every group has a victimology. Every victimology has a nationalism. Every nationalism contains the capacity for genocide.
Jenna Jameson’s Surprising Turn Towards Judaism
The conversion is a surprise considering how outspoken Jameson has been in the past about her Catholic faith.
“I’m very religious,” she told Larry King in 2013. “I think that we’ve come a long way religiously. I don’t think that you have to take the Bible literally … And I love being able to teach my children what it means to just believe and have the strength of faith … I’ve always been extremely Catholic. My father was Catholic, and he brought me up that way.”
As for Jameson’s fiancé, the Daily Beast reports the Israel-born diamond dealer was charged with insurance fraud after falsely reporting the theft of a 4.21-carat diamond from his jewelry store in 2010. He reportedly fled to Israel and attempted to sell the diamond he claimed was stolen and in 2011, pled guilty and was sentenced to three years of probation, 5 days in jail and 90 days of home confinement. He also had to return the diamond to the insurance company and pay $99,000 in restitution.
