You Can Ring My Bell

When’s disco coming back?

I grew up a Seventh-Day Adventist. Disco was a sin.

I came to California from Australia in May of 1977. I was 11 years of age.

I think it was the summer of 1978 when I was at the Pacific Union College pool and this cool long-haired quarterback was talking to the hot blonde lifeguard about their exploits at the disco the night before (perhaps at some Saint Helena version of Studio 54).

I was fascinated. I knew this was totally forbidden for a good Adventist. The quarterback was awesome with his long hair and rebellious attitude and I loved watching him curse and play flag football in the college league.

By the way these two talked, it was obvious they were sexually active (not necessarily with each other). I got a whiff of the forbidden and I was fascinated. I didn’t know that Adventist college students went to discos. I didn’t know that you could belong to the Church and yet sample the forbidden down Howell Mountain.
