Shmuel Rosner: Singling out Israel ensures Sanders will not be the next U.S. president

Why should a candidate’s approach to Israel determine whether or not he become’s America’s president? To argue that is to argue that the Israel Lobby has a stranglehold on America’s politics. Surely that can’t be right? Jews are only 1.7% of the American population.

I remember Dennis Prager saying on the radio around 1991 that the reason that Bob Dole will never get the Republican nomination for president is because of his anti-Israel stands. Bob Dole had just made a speech on the floor of the U.S. Senate against Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir.

From the Jewish Journal:

Bernie Sanders will not be the next President of the United States, and that is calming news for anyone who wants Israel to survive in a hostile environment. Not that he is hostile to Israel, or that  he wants to see it eliminated. Not that he doesn't have good intentions. Surely, his intentions as good as all the good intentions with which the road to hell is paved.

Sanders made news in recent days by making appointments to the Democratic Party's important Platform Drafting Committee of people who are not exactly Israel's most ardent supporters. Press reports focused on Sanders’ selection of Jim Zogby, a notable pro-Palestinian activist to the committee. But his other appointments – Cornel West, a supporter of BDS, rep. Keith Ellison, who voted against Iron Dome funding in Congress – are not expected to balance the Israel ticket on the committee.

The Democratic platform and its language on Israel was an issue four years ago, when Jerusalem was omitted, then added, then booed by a Democratic crowd. And of course, party platforms are for the most part meaningless. As Walter Russel Mead put it back in 2012: “No president refers back to the platform in framing legislation, no congressional leader uses it to set the legislative agenda, no living soul ever reads or quotes it for any purpose whatever. No historian of American party politics goes back to study them, no journalist refers to them more than a week after the convention. They are dead letters, produced out of a sense of ritual and to the extent they have any purpose whatever, they are idle playgrounds aimed at keeping clueless party zealots busy counting coup and scoring imaginary points.”

And yet, they count for something. They count for what “clueless party zealots” deem important. And this year, more than in 2012, Democratic Party zealots want to single out Israel as one of the issues with which to toy.

Obviously, Israel cannot complain about American parties singling it out. Israel sought a special status in American politics for decades, and hence it has no right to argue that giving it special treatment is unfair (it has every right to make such an argument when it comes to UN special treatment). It is fair. But this should not prevent us from noting that the special treatment Israel is getting in the Democratic Party is changing its nature. From being singled out as a beacon of democracy, stability, and beneficial alliance, it is now singled out as a country in need of denunciation, schooling, and punishment.

Israel was never as noble as American party platforms made it seem. But it is even less deserving of the special treatment that the Sanders forces plan for it. Israel is hardly the country most deserving of condemnation. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is hardly the most urgent world conflict to solve. Israel's policy is hardly the most preposterous and most worthy of punishment. If and when the Democratic Party platform zeroes in on Israel, this will mark not a change in Israel's behavior. It will mark a change in Israel's status with the party, and a change in Democratic attitudes toward the world and its realities.

In American politics Israel was always a litmus test for other issues. It is a country – as I noted in many of my articles – that gets much too much attention compared to other nations. It is a country whose approval ratings among Americans correspond with their views on a wide range of topics. And currently, it separates the “conservative and moderate Democrats” from the “liberal Democrats” as a Pew story demonstrated yesterday. Note the following observation: “the share of liberal Democrats who side more with the Palestinians than with Israel has nearly doubled since 2014 (from 21% to 40%) and is higher than at any point dating back to 2001”.

Bernie Sanders is the leader of liberal Democrats (many of which are Jewish Americans). He is also the leader of Millennials, the young Americans, whose views of Israel are less sympathetic. “Millennials are the only generational cohort in which fewer than half (43%) sympathize more with Israel. And about a quarter of Millennials (27%) sympathize more with the Palestinians, the highest share of any generation”.

In other words: Sanders is not the issue – or problem – for Israel. He is merely a speaker of a faction and a generation with which Israel has a growing problem. He is merely a speaker of a faction and a generation that is gaining power within the Democratic Party.

Great White Hope: Trump Unites Generations Of White Nationalists

Allegra Kirkland writes: BURNS, TENNESSEE—Presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump has been accused of dog-whistling to white nationalists ever since he kicked off his campaign in the summer of 2015 and warned against “criminal” Mexican immigrants. His retweets of Twitter users with handles like “@WhiteGenocideTM” and his tepid disavowals of David Duke’s support have not gone unnoticed in that fringe community, either.

Tucked away in the woods of middle Tennessee’s Montgomery Bell State Park, 300 “white advocates” gathered over the weekend at the fourteenth American Renaissance conference to reflect on just how much fuel Trump has added to their movement this election cycle.

“I’ve never felt this sense of energy in our movement,” the conference host, Jared Taylor, said in his opening remarks. “I’ve never been more optimistic.”

For the conference, American Renaissance, a white nationalist publication, brought advocates for a white ethno-state together with Holocaust deniers, eugenicists and confederate sympathizers. American Renaissance and many of the groups the conference speakers are associated with are designated as hate groups by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

According to Taylor, this year’s conference saw a 100-person jump in attendance from 2015; a show of hands identified half of the participants as first-time attendees and one-third as under the age of 30.

Rush Limbaugh’s Troubles

From Politico:

Even though he’s officially reached retirement age, Limbaugh will do some form of audio programming in the years to come. His love for what he does is obvious: On air, Limbaugh often says he’s “having more fun than a human being should be allowed to have.” And he sounds like he means it.
Indeed, his infectious enthusiasm is one quality that explains something important that Limbaugh’s detractors miss: He’s really good at what he does. He takes very few callers, and conducts almost no interviews. For three hours, he just talks. And he’s funny, unpredictable, stimulating. No easy feat.
But Limbaugh’s raw talent and sheer joie de vivre won’t be enough to save his current business model in an environment where his advertisers and affiliates have increasingly headed for the doors. In that sense, “Flush Rush” appears to be the rare boycott that actually worked.
Should Limbaugh leave terrestrial radio, it will be difficult to find a substitute. “Is there a voice that can replace him?” asks Baltimore’s Beaven. “That’s hard.”
For KOWL’s Steve Harness, however, it didn’t turn out to be that hard at all: He replaced Limbaugh with Dennis Prager, the cerebral conservative talker who broadcasts out of Southern California. Harness tells me he hasn’t had any problems since he picked up Prager: “I don’t have that issue with Dennis Prager calling people sluts.”

I can’t imagine any decent TV show or movie about Nazis failing to get viewers. Meaning? There’s a hunger.

Chaim Amalek: “I would prefer to see a show about Social Justice Warriors winning in our struggle against whitness, maleness, heteronormativity, religious bigotry, the Church, gender bias of every sort and nationhood.”

Season two of The Man in the High Castle arrives in late 2016.

Mission Impossible: African-Americans & analytics

Shorter Michael Wilbon: Blacks aren’t good at math. Prefer feels.

ESPN has dropped its middlebrow Grantland approach and gone instead with the black Undefeated site.

From ESPN:

The mission was to find black folks who spend anytime talking about advanced analytics, whose conversations are framed by — or even casually include references to — win shares or effective shooting percentage, WHIP (walks and hits per inning pitched) or points per 100 possessions. It’s a failed mission so far. Totally empty. Conclusion: Advanced analytics and black folks hardly ever mix. Set aside the tiny handful of black men who make a living somewhere in the sports industry dealing directly with the numbers and there is absolutely zero mingling.

Log onto any mainstream website or media outlet (certainly any program within the ESPN empire) and 30 seconds cannot pass without extreme statistical analysis, which didn’t exist 20 years ago, hijacking the conversation. But not in “BlackWorld,” where never is heard an advanced analytical word. Not in urban barbershops. Not in text chains during three-hour games. Not around office water coolers. Not even in pressrooms or locker rooms where black folks who make a living in the industry spend all day and half the night talking about the most intimate details of sports.

Let’s take the Golden State Warriors locker room, for example. I thought the complete stiff-arming of the statistical revolution might very well be generational. Old black folks don’t, but younger black folks might.

Wrong.

I asked Draymond Green, the Warriors star whose new-age game is constantly being defined statistically, if he engages in any advanced analytics conversation either professionally or personally. His answer was emphatic.

steven-adams-kicked-draymond-green
Draymond Green playing by feel.”

“No. Neither. Professionally, I play completely off of feel. I hear people discussing my game in terms of all these advanced numbers. I have no part of it,” Green said. “Even paying attention to it, from a playing standpoint, would make me robotic and undermine my game. I’m supposed to step back behind the line in real time to avoid taking a ‘bad two’? That’s thinking way too much. I don’t get the fascination at all.”

…My friend Larry Irving, a black Stanford lawyer and the most rational person I know — except when it comes to his New York Knicks fandom — said our complete withdrawal from statistical analysis is based on our emotional tie to the game.

“Sports is emotional. And analytics represent the absence of emotion, the antithesis. Nobody gets into sports to be dispassionate. And it just seems to me we are the feel it, smell it, touch it people,” he said. “WHIP and WAR [wins above replacement] and win shares are completely antiseptic. I mean, the coach may use analytics to confirm, but you mean to tell me Knute Rockne couldn’t tell whether the boy could play without some advanced analytics expert telling him?”

The thing is, that could also open the door to the issue of emotion vs. intellect. That is a thin and sensitive line to navigate, especially given the outrage people of color feel when others suggest we’re more emotional than rational about sports. But it’s an inescapable subtopic if dealing with 360 degrees of this. Without question, the emotional appeal of sports resonates with black people, whether we’re talking about the first end-zone dancers, the first high-five, the guttural releases after dunks and quarterback sacks and even putts made, that simply weren’t a noticeable part of sports before the emergence of the black athlete and legions of black fans who followed. It would take a greater and more in-depth discussion than this to figure out the reasons we, black people, are most attracted to sports other than the winning and losing, and where the emotional connection is on that spectrum.

Comments at Steve Sailer:

* Your general point is correct about Negros’ feeling of entitlement to control white language, but in this case there may be an additional factor. I’m not watching the series, but yesterday on the golf course an avid Warriors fan, 84 years old, told me that Adams has regularly been blocking Green’s shots. Blacks feel that b-ball is “their” game, thus for a White to block a Black star’s shot is an unforgivable affront. I first saw this in a high school game in 1971 in SF, when a 5’4″ black point guard slapped a white forward’s face after getting his shot blocked. It’s possible Green cares less about being called a monkey than about being “shown up” by a stale pale Australian.

* Whitlock was dumped from ESPN after failing to get The Undefeated off the ground after 3 years.

He doesn’t much care for Coates either:

SN: Why is there acrimony between you and celebrated author/journalist Ta-Nehisi Coates? Did you make a mistake with him in your recruiting effort for “The Undefeated?”

Whitlock: Glad to clear this up. I was brought back to ESPN in August of 2013. I reached out to Coates via email in November of 2013. We had a brief 15- to 20-minute phone conversation. I was effusive in my praise of his writing talents. He expressed he was uninterested in leaving “The Atlantic.” It was an exploratory, respectful conversation. I had no job to offer at the time. I wasn’t authorized to hire anyone. My first priorities were Jesse Washington and Mike Wise, two of my collaborators. It wasn’t until the Fall of 2014 and the new fiscal year that I was given the greenlight to hire anyone. My first two hires were Amy Barnett and Danielle Cadet. My next hires were in December of 2014 when I began reporting to Marie Donoghue. That’s when we were able to land Washington and Wise. In May of 2014, I emailed Coates to tell him how much I enjoyed “The Case For Reparations.” I asked him to do a podcast interview. He said he would try to accommodate my request. It didn’t happen. I left him alone. Zero hard feelings. In 2015, stories started popping up referencing his friends/surrogates about how he turned me down for a job and how I offered to triple his salary. Then he later analogized me to a drug dealer during a radio interview. Then I made the mistake of purchasing and reading “Between the World and Me,” his bestselling book. It’s a hopeless, God-less, Marxist book that allegedly is written for the edification of young black people. Any understanding and appreciation of the magnificent and courageous African-American journey is respectful of our relationship with religion and a Higher Power. What’s between the world and Ta-Nehisi Coates is an understanding of the power of prayer, hope, faith and Jesus. Feeding young people a beautifully written and seductive hopeless ideology is wishing destruction on them. The book helped me fully understand what he represents. Coates’ pro-black shtick is how elitist, Talented Tenth-believing black people try to be pro-black. They use their platforms to whine publicly about the harrowing, state-sanctioned plunder they suffered while purchasing a $2 million home. That’s not hate. I live a pampered life, too. I just try to have enough self-awareness to know my 1-percent problems are unworthy of a full column on a major media platform. I thought and think Coates would benefit greatly from working in a black media environment. His ideas need to be vigorously challenged by black people, particularly those of us who realize the danger of separating faith from fate.

* I follow Nate Silver on Twitter. You’d think that maybe people in love with data and statistics would have heretical thoughts, but whenever he gives his opinion it’s all racism this and sexism that.

How Anti-White Rhetoric Is Fueling White Nationalism

David Marcus, The Federalist, May 23, 2016

I opened Twitter recently and saw 20+ notifications. Most of the time that means the new generation of white nationalist Twitter trolls are filling my feed with racist and anti-Semitic cartoons. It was the trolls, but this was different. They were celebrating my use of the word “anti-white” in a tweet. They saw it as a victory that a “mainstream conservative” was using this term that for so long has been their calling card.

They had a point. Until recently I would have been unlikely to use the term. Not because I didn’t believe some people harbored animosity towards whites, but because that was a fringe attitude removed from power, which represented little real threat. That is no longer the case. Progressive rhetoric on race has turned an ugly corner and the existence of “anti-white” attitudes can no longer be ignored.

In the past year, all of the following headlines have appeared, in well-read publications:

What is new is the direct indictment of white people as a race. This happened through a strange rhetorical transformation over the past few years. At first, “white men are our greatest threat” postings tended to be ironic, a way of putting the racist shoe on the other foot. They were meant to show that blaming an entire race for the harmful actions of a few individuals is senseless.

Then the tenor changed. What started as irony turned into an actual belief that white people, specifically white men, are more dangerous and immoral than any other people. Loosely backed up by historical inequities and disparities in mass shootings, this position has begun to take a serious foothold.

{snip}

White people are being asked–or pushed–to take stock of their whiteness and identify with it more. This is a remarkably bad idea. The last thing our society needs is for white people to feel more tribal. The result of this tribalism will not be a catharsis of white identity, improving equality for non-whites. It will be resentment towards being the only tribe not given the special treatment bestowed by victimhood.

A big part of the reason white Americans have been willing to go along with policies that are prejudicial on their face, such as affirmative action, is that they do not view themselves as a tribe. Given the inequality of resources favoring whites in our society, it is a good thing that white people view themselves as the ones without an accent. Should that change, white privilege (whatever one views that to be) will not be eviscerated–it will be entrenched.

{snip}

All of this comes at a time when the last immigrants from the great wave of white immigration from 1850-1920 have died off. In the past, most whites identified with their European ethnicity: Irish, Italian, German, etc. As white people gravitate away from such identities, many see themselves as a neutral, “non racial” population. The Left criticizes this refusal to see themselves as “white,” but it is far preferable to the alternative: an American white population that views itself as a special-interest group.

The recurring, tired refrain that we should have a white history month if there is a black history month, or white student unions on campuses, is unintentionally being given new life by the Left. Celebrations or organizations of whiteness do not exist because we don’t need them. White people do not face the same kinds of systemic discrimination that people of color do. But progressives are doing a very good job of convincing white people that they do.

{snip}

It surprises many people that an increasing number of white Americans over the past decade believe whites face more discrimination than blacks. Obviously this feeling is inconsistent with economic data. Many have argued that a white fear of losing the dominant economic place in society is behind this belief. But what if the discrimination that white people are feeling and expressing is not primarily economic in nature?

{snip}

One of the key components to the success of this racism is the almost-daily parade of silly micro-aggressions and triggers, specifically on college campuses. Conservative media seize upon disputes over the cultural appropriation of taco night or banning hoopskirts as evidence that minority racial grievance has gotten unhinged.

In emerging white nationalist journals such as Radix, this constant drumbeat of attack against white insensitivity is viewed gravely. What results is a belief among a growing number of whites in the concepts of “white genocide” and “racial realism.”

{snip}

Young white men, reacting to social and educational constructs that paint them as the embodiment of historical evil, are fertile ground for white supremacists. They are very aware of the dichotomy between non-white culture, which must be valued at all times (even in the midst of terror attacks), and white culture, which must be criticized and devalued. They don’t like it.

{snip}

The result of these societal double standards is for many a desire to lash out against it. For every white college student who dutifully accepts his privilege, many more resent the idea and wish to fight it. The sharpest arrow in their quiver is to be offensive.

This desire to be offensive has given rise to the “alt right.” Supporters of this loosely assembled white nationalist movement understand a playful aspect to its use of slurs. But just as the Left shifted from using anti-white rhetoric as an ironic device to an actual indictment of white culture, so has the alt right come to believe much of its troubling rhetoric.

{snip}

For both groups the central theme is identity. That theme quickly calcifies into attitudes too brittle to hold up serious discourse. In reducing all phenomena to a question of race, both the alt right and the progressive left ensure the dominance of racial resentment as the lynchpin of our society.

Cross-Generational Differences in Educational Outcomes in the Second Great Wave of Immigration

LINK: We make use of a new data source – matched birth records and longitudinal student records in Florida – to study the degree to which student outcomes differ across successive immigrant generations. Specifically, we investigate whether first, second, and third generation Asian and Hispanic immigrants in Florida perform differently on reading and mathematics tests, and whether they are differentially likely to get into serious trouble in school, to be truant from school, to graduate from high school, or to be ready for college upon high school graduation. We find evidence suggesting that early-arriving first generation immigrants perform better than do second generation immigrants, and second generation immigrants perform better than third generation immigrants. Among first generation immigrants, the earlier the arrival, the better the students tend to perform. These patterns of findings hold for both Asian and Hispanic students, and suggest a general pattern of successively reduced achievement – beyond a transitional period for recent immigrants – in the generations following the generation that immigrated to the United States.

Is Boulder America’s Future?

Comments at Steve Sailer:

* If this Guardian piece was an intentional parody a la Onion, i.e. someone saying “the recipe for a happy U.S. is a place with 88% whites and 1% blacks”, everyone would be screaming from the top of their lungs that you can’t be so racist, oblivious and insensitive. But apparently if you are the Guardian you can be as oblivious as you like, so long as you take snipes at the Donald.

* This is hilarious. Boulder is absurdly expensive, rabidly leftist/socialist, and looney bin crazy. You can stroll the main pedestrian shopping drag downtown, buy a $500 ski parka, then catch a $500 fine if you spark up a cigarette (but not a joint) outside (or even in your own car). Trustafarians abound (like in Vail). Traffic is horrible. Not too long ago you could swiftly escape to a more authentic hippie culture up the canyon in Nederland, but lately that too has become increasingly trustafarian. Every other storefront is selling wildly overpriced “art” or crystals and related new age crap from white people in dreadlocks.

From my perspective, the only redemption comes from ripping down the canyon with no opposing traffic in a sports car (i.e. Left Hand Canyon), but Boulder is far from the only place in the Colorado Rockies where there are spectacular enthusiast driving roads. That pretty much leaves us with the overwhelmingly white and low crime population and springtime rafting.

* Boulder IS awesome – even if you don’t subscribe to the left wing politics of the place, it’s got nature in spades, safety, lots of smart people, and decent culture and dining. Of course as Steve points out, the author glaringly omits the key characteristics of who lives there and who doesn’t, because readers might accidentally think that high concentrations of educated white people tend to result in really high quality of all around living as opposed to vibrant diversity all over the place being the highest good.

I’d probably toss Madison, Wisconsin in there as well – love it and could live there even as a huge political outlier because everything else about it is pretty great.

* It has 100K people, with a university that enrolls 30K students. Probably half the city is either attending the university or employed by it.

In other words, they don’t have to actually produce anything, and are completely subsidized by the government and rich parents sending money to their kids. Of course it’s a nice place to live.

* It’s worth noting that almost all of the non-whites in the Boulder census are students obtained by U. Colo. diversity incentives. I’ve never seen a nonwhite outside of the campus, or Pearl Street mall. And when I’ve seen them, they are surrounded by crowds of adoring dreadlocked trust fund millennials who appear desperate to have some of that cool blackness rub off on them.

* “It has been voted the US’s brainiest city, its happiest city, the country’s foodiest place and the number one city for health.”

Why is Boulder more brainy, happy, & healthy than Ferguson and San Bernardino for example? Isn’t diversity suppose to be our strength?

* I’ve always felt like the best place in the world to live would be a liberal city inside a conservative state & country. Like Boulder, or Austin.

In a small, concentrated group, lefties can really contribute to quality of life: They tend to produce good food, coffee shops, music scenes, a literary element, etc…

The trouble is when they get to be in charge of the larger society. Then they ruin everything.

* Boulder is also the home of Soldier of Fortune magazine and Paladin Press, publisher of such titles as Hit Man: A Technical Manual for Independent Contractors.

* Jim Goad has said that whenever White Liberals call him a racist, he responds by saying he lives in 75 percent Black Stone Mountain, Georgia and than he asks them what percentage of their neighborhood or suburb that they live in is Black?

Stone Mountain would scare the shit out of most White Liberals, especially since most Blacks in Stone Mountain are lot less Whitewashed than Obama in how they speak and dress. Stone Mountain has a lot of World Star Hip Hop culture.

News: Parents are stunned after hearing a girl had sex with as many as 25 boys in school bathroom

School motto: “The strength of the wolf is the pack, and the strength of the pack is the wolf.”

Fort Myers, the city, is 30% non-hispanic white and 40% black and 30% hispanic.

NEWS: Disturbing news out of South Fort Myers High School in Lee County, Fla., has parents stunned and sad.

Police have been notified of a bathroom incident that was supposedly recorded and distributed on Snapchat in which a 15-year-old girl had sex with multiple male students after school — and it could have been as many as 25.

This was the number of students who were identified as going into the bathroom at the time the incident took place,FOX 4 reported.

The girl has admitted to having sex with multiple guys.

Parents and students alike relayed their shock. Eric Struble, a father to two 15-year-old girls, could only muster four words.

“Shock. Disbelief. Concern. Sad,” he said.

Petislin Cadeau, an 18-year-old student, asked a particularly pertinent question during an interview with FOX 4.

“Like, how did it happen? Like, where was everybody at?” he said. “I heard a video was around, but I never really saw it or anything. It just like circulated around.”

He said he’d heard members of the football team were involved.

MORE: Shortly after the story broke, an Instagram video surfaced that appears to be edited with real and fake coverage of the story (though nobody has confirmed if it’s real, fake or something in between) and features alleged members of the community saying that the 15-year-old girl in question is not the only member of her family to engage in similar acts.

One interviewee in the video claims, “Her momma did it, her grandma did it.” Adding, “Nasty, they all got caught f***ing in classrooms.”

The video appears to be a fake, but the slut shaming of a 15-year-old and the women in her family — while holding the two dozen boys involved in the incident to no responsibility — is very real. See the viral video that has the internet LOLing over this sad story:

Transgender Bathrooms Are a Human Rights Struggle – and a Jewish Imperative

Chaim Amalek writes: “To be fair, it is not as though non-orthodox rabbis are the only clerics in the West who have embraced this cause. There are plenty of Christian pastors who have as well, and the sympathy of the RC clergy for men who have sex with men (and boys) is well known.”

“Is it proper for white males to exclude migrant penises from their rectums? I say it is not, that such exclusionis but a form of homophobia from which springs every other sort of hatred in the world. Also, if you won’t happily let a Somali immigrant fuck your 12 year old daughter, you are a racist.”

“Asians are going to beat the pants off of the Jews in the next generation. Like orthodox Jews, they embrace family and race, but also secular learning and hard work. None of this liberal Jewish racial nonsense for them. In terms of competing for the best that goymerica still has to offer, they represent the best of both orthodox and secular Judaism, without the impediment of Torah and rabbis to slow them down.”

From Haaretz:

Rabbi Jesse Olitzky May 22, 2016 3:38 PM

As Jews our responsibility is to embrace the gender identity of each individual not only in our communities but in society at large. That means repealing transphobic legislation like North Carolina’s HB2.

North Carolina’s controversial “Bathroom Law”, which stipulates that in government buildings, individuals may only use the restroom that corresponds to the gender on their birth certificates, continues to make headlines. Proponents of the law, known officially as HB2 “The Public Facilities Privacy and Security Act,” claim that it is about safety, preventing men from “claiming to be transgender” just so that they can enter a women’s bathroom and invade their privacy. But over 200 local, state, and national organizations that work with assault victims claim that there is nothing to support the fears of these lawmakers. And none of the 18 states that have nondiscrimination laws that protect transgender rights has seen an increase in public safety issues because of these laws.
The fight over the law hit a tipping point when the Department of Justice determined that HB2 violates the Federal Civil Rights Act and gave North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory an ultimatum to ensure that the state would not comply with the law. North Carolina didn’t budge, and instead sued the government. The Justice Department responded with a lawsuit of their own, with Attorney General Loretta Lynch describing the battle over this law as the civil rights struggle of this era.
But the fight over HB2 is more than a civil rights struggle; it’s a human rights struggle. And as Jews, we have a particular imperative to treat it as such.
As Jews, we have an obligation to see each individual as made in God’s image. Each individual is unique and created differently. We are not God, and therefore, it is not for us to put parameters on the divine nature or image of another person. Rather, we should honor each individual as divine, regardless of one’s gender identity. Even the rabbis of the Talmud understood that we do not live in a gender binary system. We find six different gender identities in the Talmud. This Talmudic precedent suggests that we should not only acknowledge one’s gender identity, but also celebrate it.
Some Jewish institutions are starting to implement policies in line with this thinking. Last year, the Union for Reform Judaism passed a resolution that “affirms the right[s] of transgender and gender non-conforming individuals” and “urges the adoption and implementation of legislation and policies that prevent discrimination based on gender identity and expression.” Similarly, the Conservative Movement’s Rabbinical Assembly is in the process of voting on a resolution that affirms its commitment to fully welcoming, accepting and including people of all gender identities in Jewish life and general society. These statements understand our commitment as Jews to honor each individual. Last June, I wrote that ensuring that all can use the bathroom in our institutions “is as integral to the sacred nature of the building as is creating a transcendent prayer space.”
These statements reflect an understanding of the importance of making sure that our sacred communities and sacred spaces are welcoming of everyone. But our obligation as Jews to embrace the gender identity of each individual does not end with our institutional buildings and programs. We have an obligation as Jews to build a society that is just as inclusive and accepting as the communities we set out to create.
Judaism teaches that pikuach nefesh, saving a life, supersedes everything else in Jewish law. A study by the Williams Institute think tank shows that 41 percent of transgender and gender non-conforming individuals have attempted suicide. This number is substantially greater than the overall suicide rate of 4.6 percent in the United States. The way society has treated transgender individuals makes them feel as if there is no place for them in this world. Denying them the basic human right of going to the bathroom, as North Carolina has attempted to do, only reinforces this feeling.
But embracing all and creating inclusive communities can have the opposite effect. A recent study out of the University of Washington suggests that transgender youth that are supported and accepted by family, friends, teachers, clergy, and society as a whole are no more anxious or depressed than other children their age.
