The Rabbi And The Sauna

NYT: For years, Rabbi Jonathan Rosenblatt, the leader of an affluent Modern Orthodox synagogue in the Bronx, did something unusual with the boys in his congregation.

He took them, some as young as 12, to the gym to play squash or racquetball, then showered beside them and took them into the sauna, where — often naked, and with them often naked — he engaged the boys in searching conversations about their lives, problems and faith.

Some liked talking to the rabbi. But others felt uncomfortable. At the time, the late 1980s, people at Rabbi Rosenblatt’s synagogue, the Riverdale Jewish Center, quietly urged him to stop. He said he would. They believe he eventually did. And because the rabbi was not accused of sexual misconduct, and because this was a time less attuned to issues of clerical impropriety, not much more came of it.

As Rabbi Rosenblatt, an accomplished scholar who married into rabbinical royalty, grew to be one of New York City’s most prominent Orthodox leaders, he took older squash partners to the sauna: college students, rabbinical interns, young men from his congregation.

Miss Universe Japan 2015 Is Half-Black

If I were Japanese, I would not necessarily be pleased by my country being represented by a woman who’s half-black.

If I were Nigerian, I would not necessarily want my country represented by someone who’s half-Japanese.

People have a right and incentive to prefer their own kind.

The reason Japan has long been immune to ethnic conflict is that it is homogeneous. Wherever you have racial and religious diversity, you have conflict.

NYT:

Biracial Beauty Queen Strives for Change in Mono-Ethnic Japan

The child of a short-lived marriage between an African-American sailor in the United States Navy and a local Japanese woman, Ms. Miyamoto grew up in Japan, where she says other children often shunned her because of her darker skin and tightly curled hair.

That experience has driven her to use her pageant victory as a soapbox for raising awareness about the difficulties faced by mixed-race citizens in a country that still regards itself as mono-ethnic.

“Even today, I am usually seen not as a Japanese but as a foreigner. At restaurants, people give me an English menu and praise me for being able to eat with chopsticks,” said Ms. Miyamoto, who spoke in her native Japanese, and is an accomplished calligrapher of Japanese-Chinese characters. “I want to challenge the definition of being Japanese.”

Her self-proclaimed mission has raised eyebrows at a time when race relations are receiving new scrutiny in Japan, which had long seen itself as immune to the ethnic tensions of the United States…

With outright immigration still restricted to a trickle, much of Japan’s new diversity comes from the ethnically mixed children of marriages between Japanese and foreigners. These hafu — a term that comes from the English word “half” — have gained increasing social prominence, especially in sports and on television.

Japanese of mixed race also account for a small but growing portion of the overall population: According to the Health Ministry, some 20,000 children with one non-Japanese parent are now born here annually, about 2 percent of total births…

But experts on pageants said it was precisely because she is half black that she has gotten so much attention. They said her victory had overturned an unspoken hierarchy among hafu, in which those with lighter skin color have long been celebrated as the most beautiful.

The American Way

Comments to Steve Sailer:

* Growing up I felt no cultural identity whatsoever, other than American. The first Jewish person I remember meeting was a friend from elementary school, who one day stopped and said to me, “I’m Jewish.” I stood there confused and said something like, “okay,” and then continued playing. I didn’t learn until years later that my paternal grandfather was Jewish. Nobody had ever seemed to care, not even him. It was a footnote.

I still believe that very many Americans still alive grew up like me, with no concern for these identities, these cultural or ethnic competitions. Yes, maybe that’s because we were all mostly white goys. But, again, some of us were true mixes. That’s really American to me.

* Given that Europeans created this nation and its institutions, and continue to be the dominant group, why is it surprising or considered inappropriate for Europeans to not have some privilege or advantage? It seems Europeans are being asked to give others preferential treatment and access to the institutions they created. Would other groups be expected to do the same in the nations they created? For example, would Jews in Israel be expected to give non-Jews every advantage Jews have? Would Jews in Israel be deemed to have Jewish privilege or advantage? I doubt it. So why then the constant attack on Europeans?

* Where the Anglo-Americans fell short was failing to ensure that the beneficiaries of the said noblesse oblige also internalized and practiced noblesse oblige.

Instead, they went along with or at least condoned the rapacity and clannishness of their protégés, if you will, while they still had power to correct, and now it’s too late.

California Is Looking More Like Mexico Every Day

I fell in love with LA in 1982 when MTV came out and most of the music videos, it seemed, were shot in LA and filled with hot chicks.

Now I go to the beach and it is mainly short fat Mexicans wearing unsightly clothing.

Comments to Steve Sailer:

* I grew up far from Los Angeles and was a kid in the seventies.
My impression of LA in the 60s and early 70s :

Great movies coming out of Hollywood- The Graduate, Burch Cassidy…, 2001, Planet of the Apes

My favourite TV shows as a kid Beverly Hillbillies, Gilligan’s Island , Star Trek, Brady Bunch, Dragnet ., were made there

Musically, the Doors , the Whiskey- a-Gogo , Beach Boys Eagles…

Sports – Alcindor , Walton Koufax .

Great weather, beautiful starlets and a place for creative free-spirits.

I finally visited LA ten years ago. I liked all the art deco and Spanish- themed architecture, loved the ocean and palm trees, but it seemed like I was just getting a glimpse of the past.

There were no beautiful blonde beach babes around. It seemed very much like a Mexican city and most of the white people around were tourists . People were telling me that the suburbs are all Chinese. Rodeo Drive was all Middle Eastern. Not a place I would like to go back to.

Hollywood will decamp from LA soon . It will only get worse.

* My wife’s young nephew from downstate Illinois, 6’1″ blond and blue-eyed, stayed with us one summer. He played on two soccer teams at the neighborhood park. The friendly Mexican team called him “Hollywood” because nobody else in North Hollywood looks like a Hollywood movie star anymore. (The surly Russian team just called him “You.”)

* I lived in Southern California, mostly Santa Monica, West LA, and Orange County in the ’60s and ’70s, and it was a paradise on earth in so many ways, and not just if you had a keen appreciation of beautiful women (esp. blondes). Unlike SF, which was settled from the ocean, SoCal was mostly populated by the midwesterners during and after WW II. If you drove through a Jack-in-the-Box, or a Carl’s Jr. or McDonald’s, you’d be greeted by a pretty teenage girl (of course, white) since in those days work at fast food places was deemed appropriate only for teenagers. UCLA (95% white) had a lot of blond surfer dudes, and at noon the coeds on the steps of the Powell Library looked like they were taking a break between modeling assignments.

LA a cultural wasteland? Hardly. Southern California has for decades had the world’s largest concentration of Ph.D’s, and in the 1960s-1980s, the days of Feynman, etc., probably also the largest number of Nobel laureates. How about Caltech (ranked 1st or 2nd in the world), UCLA (ranked 11th in the world), UCI, JPL, RAND, Raytheon, and all the other aerospace companies, and if you include San Diego (America’s Gibraltar) and La Jolla, then there is no other place in the world that can even begin to compare with SoCal in sheer brainpower. The Internet originated at UCLA in late ’69 in their Math building, for heaven’s sake.

There was a dark side, definitely. The shadow of the Vietnam war, esp. if you were eligible for the draft, weighed heavy on your psyche. There were War Surplus stores everywhere. Much of Hollywood, and LA toward downtown had a Bukowskian tinge to it, i.e., kind of run down like it never recovered from the Depression. In the downtown skid row district as late as the ’60s you could still hire a taxi girl to dance with, and massage parlors, mud wrestling places, and Pussycat theaters were everywhere.

* Southern California is still an amazing place to live if you have money. Amazing weather, surfing, hiking, attractive women, nightlife, restaurants. Perhaps the best place in the world. There are still lots of attractive blondes, though mostly in the wealthier enclaves.

The main change is that non-affluent white families can’t afford to live there anymore. It’s no longer the middle class utopia of the past. Unless you’ve got a family income of at least 150K/yr, you’re priced out of a middle class lifestyle.

Another change is that the sense of solidarity and togetherness has eroded. People are very isolated from one another. Most of the socializing seems to within extended family circles or cliquish groups of friends. There’s very little sense of community among the people.

It’s a nice playground for handsome playboys, party girls, trust fund babies, and Hollywood glitterati. For everyone else, it’s a nice place to visit (or even temporarily reside if you’re below 30), but I wouldn’t live there. Too expensive, too atomized, and too competitive.

* I’ve known a (white) woman in Southern California, typical of her generation, born in the ’60s, who had some college but basically partied her way through life in the ’80s and ’90s. In those two decades she could walk into an office, and get a reasonably well-paid low level job practically on the spot. Her good looks undoubtedly helped. That was the old laid-back California that so many of us loved in the ’60s, ’70s, and even ’80s although to a lesser extent. Then the Asian onslaught (in the ’60s there were very few Asians at SoCal colleges, except for foreign students from Asia), Hispanic immigration, and the IT revolution made life much more competitive for everyone, and now she’s back in college desperately trying to upgrade her skills to become employable again.

Homos In Espionage

Comments to Steve Sailer on the Dennis Hastert scandal:

* Homosexuals have been big in espionage, and I suspect homosexual networks have been big everywhere, for all time. Not so much for the blackmail, although homosexuals can blackmail people they have had sex with, but for the secret handshake aspect of it.

We know Jews are loyal to Jews, and other ethnic groups help each other to an extent, but my theory is homosexuals trump all of these. This bond seems to be stronger than family, clan, or nation, and I think is the deep reason homosexuals have been reviled- they are serious potential security risks.

* Rumors about Hastert having a gay molestation problem in his past have been around for years, but never got any traction.

* the indictment specifically mentions Hastert was a wrestling coach and teacher, and the blackmailer is a lifetime resident of Yorkville who knew Hastert most of his/her life.

WP: Anti-Semitic fliers left on Chevy Chase driveways

WP:

The two-page fliers are a compilation of photocopied quotations from anti-Semitic documents. “Remove each and every Jew and Pro-Israel official from state and federal governments and financial organizations,” one corner of the flier says. The heading at the top of the flier is: “Jews Destroy U.S. Financially.”

On the first side of the first page, the leaflet includes a quotation maligning Jews which has been repeatedly, and falsely, attributed to George Washington, and another false quotation from Benjamin Franklin.

The succeeding pages grow increasingly chaotic, with arrows and text piled on top of each other. “‘The work of a confused, disturbed mind’ would be a kind way to put it,” Sperling said.

I wonder if the flyers contained accurate statements from the Talmud about Jesus and his followers, what then? Would that be hate speech?

One passage from the 1935 Soncino edition reads:

Onkelos son of Kolonikos … went and raised Titus from the dead by magical arts, and asked him; ‘Who is most in repute in the [other] world? He replied: Israel. What then, he said, about joining them? He said: Their observances are burdensome and you will not be able to carry them out. Go and attack them in that world and you will be at the top as it is written, Her adversaries are become the head etc.; whoever harasses Israel becomes head. He asked him: What is your punishment [in the other world]? He replied: What I decreed for myself. Every day my ashes are collected and sentence is passed on me and I am burnt and my ashes are scattered over the seven seas. He then went and raised Balaam by incantations. He asked him: Who is in repute in the other world? He replied: Israel. What then, he said, about joining them? He replied: Thou shalt not seek their peace nor their prosperity all thy days for ever. He then asked: What is your punishment? He replied: With boiling hot semen. He then went and raised by incantations Jesus [in Vilna edition: “the sinners of Israel”; “Jesus” appears in Munich 95 and Vatican 140 manuscripts and “he went and brought up Jesus the Nazarene” (Editions or MSs: Vatican 130)]. He asked them: Who is in repute in the other world? They replied: Israel. What about joining them? They replied: Seek their welfare, seek not their harm. Whoever touches them touches the apple of his eye. He said: What is your punishment? They replied: With boiling hot excrement, since a Master has said: Whoever mocks at the words of the Sages is punished with boiling hot excrement. Observe the difference between the sinners of Israel and the prophets of the other nations who worship idols. It has been taught: Note from this incident how serious a thing it is to put a man to shame, for God espoused the cause of Bar Kamza and destroyed His House and burnt His Temple.

—Babylonian Talmud, Gittin 56b-57a

Is that hate speech?

At the end of the morning prayers (Shacharit), Jews say the Six Remembrances, including:

You shall remember what Amalek did to you on the way, when you went out of Egypt, how he happened upon you on the way and cut off all the stragglers at your rear, when you were faint and weary, and did not fear G‑d. [Therefore,] it will be, when the L‑rd your G-d grants you respite from all your enemies around [you] in the land which the L‑rd, your G‑d, gives to you as an inheritance to possess, that you shall obliterate the remembrance of Amalek from beneath the heavens. You shall not forget!

So if the flyers simply repeated this prayer but substituted “Jews” and “Israel” for “Amalek”, would that be hate speech? How does this prayer sound? “You shall remember what the Jews did to you on the way, when you went out of Egypt, how he happened upon you on the way and cut off all the stragglers at your rear, when you were faint and weary, and did not fear G‑d. [Therefore,] it will be, when the L‑rd your G-d grants you respite from all your enemies around [you] in the land which the L‑rd, your G‑d, gives to you as an inheritance to possess, that you shall obliterate the remembrance of Israel from beneath the heavens. You shall not forget!”

The Spirit Of New Orleans Lives On In Texas!

It was just like this after Hurricane Katrina!

NYT:

In Wimberley, Tex., people helped each other regroup after deadly storms damaged or destroyed hundreds of homes…

“Over the past few days, we’ve been absolutely amazed and overwhelmed at the generosity of others, even complete strangers,” Ms. Burke said. “This experience has strengthened our faith in God and in humanity.”

Survivors are struggling to salvage what they can, and reminding themselves that these are only possessions, and that they are lucky to be alive.

“I guess it’s just a sign that it’s time for a change in my life,” Ms. Sweat said. “God said, ‘You have too much stuff.’”

…”It was probably the most horrible and amazing experience of my life,” she said. “We could not have gotten through that really painful year without the love and support of the community. We’ll do anything for anyone in town. We love this town.”

Rabbi, My husband wants a Blowjob: A Halachic Analysis of Fellatio in Jewish Marital Intimacy (Marital sexuality and Halacha) (Volume 1) Paperback – August 11, 2014

Why I love Judaism. Don’t forget the sequel: Rabbi, My Husband Wants Anal Sex: An Halachic Analysis of Anal Sex within the bounds of Jewish marital intimacy (Marital sexuality and Halacha) (Volume 2)

* Fellatio in Halacha:

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:
Within the guidelines of halacha as presented by chazal and early rabbinic authorities, fellatio is classified as ביאה דרך איברים Penetration by way of the limbs) or מעשה חידודים בעלמא (General acts of sharpening).

Peripheral Halachic discussion of the topic revolves upon whether or not a husband may engage in varying sexually-gratifying acts with his wife – of which include fellatio – performed up to and including a complete extra-vaginal ejaculation.

The discussion includes the opinion of the permitting-authorities limiting their permit to specific frequencies and timings with the consensus being that any halachic-permit (“hetter”) is solely applicable within the exclusive framework of a Torah-permitted marital relationship and strictly during the time that one’s wife is not in her Niddah state.

The original Hebrew text of the mishna torah of the Rambam as translated by Yosef Qafih shows the rambam takes a lenient approach that permits all that a man desires to do with his wife. The presentation omits the customary prohibition on extracting semen in vain, which Qafih quarantines as an addition by a subsequent unknown editor. The Rambam’s commentary to the mishna likewise hints at a lenient stance[1]

On occasion[edit]
Although chazal have in certain instances permitted intentional extra-vaginal ejaculation in tandem with one’s wife.[2] Tosefot cites the opinion of Rabbi Yitzchak (Isaac ben Samuel) who permits an occasional complete extra-vaginal ejaculation with one’s wife on condition that one does not accustom himself to always doing so (Tosfoth, Yebamoth 34b, Tosfoth Sanhedrin 58b)). The Bayit Chadash (Yoel Sirkis) commentary to the Rabbeinu Asher (ibid.) explicitly permits this foreign ejaculation with Rabbeinu Asher siding with the tosafist opinion.[3] This opinion is likewise quoted in Tur Shulchan Aruch, Even Ha’ezer ch. 25.

Rabbenu Asher sourced his views based on the talmudic tract of yebamoth;

It isn’t comparable to the action of Er and Onan only if one is accustomed to doing so all the time, but if it is performed on occasion when he desire his wife for non-vaginal relations – it is permitted ..as whatever a man desires to do with his wife he may as per the (chazalic) parable of meat that is acquired from the butcher and fish from the fisherman(tractate nedarim, 20b)

—Rabbein Asher to tractate Yebamoth 34b
Thus Rabbenu Asher, followed by Rabbi Elijah Spira, commented that an occasional exterior ejaculation in tandem with ones wife is not considered “extracting semen in vain” (and not banned by the talmud) as long as the intention is not to avoid impregnating one’s wife and it is done on occasion, as this is not likened to the desire of Onan who wished to avoid impregnating Tamar entirely.[4] The Aguddah work also sides with the lenient opinion permitting an occasional extra-vaginal ejaculation with one’s wife,[5] whilst Rabbi Samuel Eidels (the Maharsha) likewise taking a lenient view.[6]

Parable of meat and fish[edit]
In a varying text of kallah rabthi as printed in “battei medrashoth”[7] Rabbi Werthheimer notes the significance of the Talmud quoting both meat and fish in its parable depicting the enhanced permissiveness of sexually gratifying activities that one may perform with his wife;

Since the Torah forbids cooking one’s meat in milk, a parable quoting just meat would not suffice as meat has this restrictive element whereas fish has a lesser restrictive element, thus implying that man has an enhanced level of (sexual) freedom with his wife.

As often as needed[edit]
A more explicit permissive stance is that of the tosafist rabbi Isaiah di Trani the elder who hints that a complete extra-vaginal ejaculation is permitted whenever needed to “seat” one’s desire with the stark exclusion being to avoid pregnancy;

What was the (forbidden) action of Er and Onan that the torah prohibits? that committed with the intent of not diminishing her beauty (due to pregnancy) and he doesn’t desire to fulfill the mitzvah of procreation (פרו ורבו) with her. But if his intent.. is for his inclination and to satisfy his desire and his intent is not to avoid impregnating her, it is permitted, ..he whose intent is to fulfill the desire of his inclination does not transgress as “all that a man wants to do with his wife he may do” (tractate nedarim, 20b) -and this isn’t called “wasting his seed”

—Tosfoth Ri”d to tractate Yebamoth, p. 12b (Yad HaRav Herzog, Jerusalem)
Rabbi Isaiah the elder’s view is likewise echoed by his descendant, rabbi Isaiah di Trani the Younger.[8]

Rabbi Eleazar of Worms, in his recently published Torah commentary to the verse “Adam and his wife, and where not embarrassed” (genesis) permits any activity with one’s wife necessary to “quiet (lit. seat)” his desire.[9]

Active participation[edit]
Later rabbinic authorities differentiated between masturbation (self-extracting semen in vain) and an extra-vaginal ejaculation achieved with the active participation of one’s torah-permitted partner – with the former being forbidden under most if not all circumstances. Apparently, any halachic permit for an extra-vaginal ejaculation must be accompanied by the active participation of one’s wife.

From among rabbi’s of the achronim era, the Tzemach Tzedek differentiated between extracting ones seed alone (“masturbation upon trees and stones”) and extra-vaginal extracting of one’s semen with the active participation of one’s wife, with the latter classified as a form of a tandem relationship.[10]
