Demography is Destiny, American Nations Edition

Jayman writes:

Sorting within an ethnic groups can produce distinct regional differences. Founder effects are powerful, as is the converse effect, boiling off.

This means that regional differences across countries like the United States reflect genetic differences between people. Even of those who accept that genes impact behavior, many like to blame these local variations on local “culture” (as if culture was some otherworldly force itself without cause). But our discoveries render that view untenable. These include many newer behavioral genetic studies using nationally representative U.S. samples. These studies find no shared environment influence, which would turn up if local cultural effects existed (see the following: on victimization, Boutwell et al 2013; on domestic violence, Barnes et al 2012; on criminality in adoptees, Beaver et al 2015a; on football participation and violence, Beaver et al 2013; on enlisting in the military, Beaver et al 2015b; on peers and academic performance, Barnes et al 2014; on peers and delinquency, Boisvert et al 2013; on handgun ownership, Barnes, Boutwell, and Beaver, 2014). In addition, there are large extended twin studies looking at politics, religiosity, and marriage that find nothing attributable to local environment (Hatemi et al 2010; Coventry & Keller, 2005; and Zietsch et al 2011, respectively). (These are in addition to the many population-wide Scandinavian studies that generally find an absence of neighborhood effects – future post)…

Different regions of the United States perform differently on various social indicators. A great many of these indicators were featured in my post More Maps of the American Nations (as well as in the earlier post Maps of the American Nations). The pattern we see above (and many other patterns) – while clearly partially the result of (continental) racial variation, isn’t solely due to such, since we see variation within the White population as well, as can be seen with White poverty rates…

With a reliable measure of the ancestral make-up of each county, analyzing each county’s characteristics and comparing these characteristics with those of the ancestral nations was a fairly straightforward endeavor:

We see that (with a few exceptions), the performance of the different ancestry groups conforms closely to what we’d expect (given the average IQ of the source country, with selective migration considered). They were able to correlate ethnic ancestry in each county with both characteristics in the source countries and with GDP per capita in each county:

All these facts should makes clear how key demography is to societal outcomes. The people make the society. If you want a better society, you must (in one way or another) get better people. This has obvious consequences for immigration and for many other matters as well

Sexual Exploitation Of Children In Middle East, Africa

* I recently saw the documentary on the Dancing Boys of Afghanistan. It exposed an ancient custom called “bacha bazi” (boy for play), where rich men buy boys as young as 11 from impoverished families for sexual slavery. The boys are dressed in women’s clothes and made to dance and sing at parties, before being carted away by the men for sex. Owning boys is considered a symbol of status and one former warlord boasted of having up to 3,000 boys over a 20-year period, even though he was married, with two sons. The involvement of the police and inaction of the government means this form of child prostitution is widespread.

The Atlantic: American Murder Mystery Why is crime rising in so many American cities? The answer implicates one of the most celebrated antipoverty programs of recent decades

Section Eight housing spreads criminals around nice neighborhoods and destroys them.

The Atlantic: Memphis demolished its first project in 1997. The city gave former residents federal “Section8” rent-subsidy vouchers and encouraged them to move out to new neighborhoods. Two more waves of demolition followed over the next nine years, dispersing tens of thousands of poor people into the wider metro community.

If police departments are usually stingy with their information, housing departments are even more so. Getting addresses of Section 8 holders is difficult, because the departments want to protect the residents’ privacy. Betts, however, helps the city track where the former residents of public housing have moved. Over time, she and Janikowski realized that they were doing their fieldwork in the same neighborhoods.

About six months ago, they decided to put a hunch to the test. Janikowski merged his computer map of crime patterns with Betts’s map of Section8 rentals. Where Janikowski saw a bunny rabbit, Betts saw a sideways horseshoe (“He has a better imagination,” she said). Otherwise, the match was near-perfect. On the merged map, dense violent-crime areas are shaded dark blue, and Section8 addresses are represented by little red dots. All of the dark-blue areas are covered in little red dots, like bursts of gunfire. The rest of the city has almost no dots.

Betts remembers her discomfort as she looked at the map. The couple had been musing about the connection for months, but they were amazed—and deflated—to see how perfectly the two data sets fit together. She knew right away that this would be a “hard thing to say or write.” Nobody in the antipoverty community and nobody in city leadership was going to welcome the news that the noble experiment that they’d been engaged in for the past decade had been bringing the city down, in ways they’d never expected. But the connection was too obvious to ignore, and Betts and Janikowski figured that the same thing must be happening all around the country. Eventually, they thought, they’d find other researchers who connected the dots the way they had, and then maybe they could get city leaders, and even national leaders, to listen.

Comments to Steve Sailer:

* Does sitting the dumb kid next to the smart kid work in a classroom?

I was the smart kid that always got them…and it just led to me feeling guilty for other people’s problems.

So no.

* Andy, Barney, Aunt Bee…

I’d like you to meet your new neighbors: Porche, Mercedes, Binaca, Listerene, and Shaqueequee.

* Sometime within the last two decades, in one of the border states, there was a detailed academic evaluation of a pilot program that involved dumping a bunch of Section 8 families into nice neighborhoods. The researchers found that this greatly improved the perceived quality of life for the Section 8 families in the program. But they were also honest enough to reveal that these people began fouling their nests from the day of their arrival: The areas around relocated Section 8 families experienced significant increases in reported crimes, incidents of civil disorder and other measures of social entropy.

To me the key questions become: (1) Should an increase in the subjective happiness of a small number of dysfunctional and socially and economically useless persons be bought at the expense of very real discomforts experienced by a much larger number of their productive fellow citizens? and (2) Should government at any level be involved in imposing such dysfunctional and destructive persons on innocent people, selected purely because they do not have the political clout to stand against this onslaught?

* Progressive education reformers have been talking about housing reform being the key to school reform for decades. By reform, they mean compulsory integration. In a generation, you will need permission from HUD to sell your house so as to avoid disparate impact claims.

* These people are evil. Just targeting above average neighborhoods and communities to be flipped and demographically transformed, while cloaked in civil rights language. I wish there was something I could do to stop them beyond about it and get angry.

* My experience has been that the number of blacks that is too few to cause trouble is zero. Just one recent example. I live in a small town that is over 90% white. Our neighborhood was all white. A black woman moved in up the street and her daughter and teen-aged grandson moved in down the street. The second family had been there about 2 weeks when the grandson “allegedly” started burglarizing neighborhood homes. Items reported to the police as stolen were found at his grandmother’s house. He was arrested. To add insult to injury, the grandmother and mother wrongly assumed one of their relative’s victims had reported him to police for drug use so they started a very nasty smear campaign against her on Facebook. When we moved in here ten years ago, people didn’t lock their doors. Now they do. The whole climate of the neighborhood has changed, not for the better.

* I guess moving all the black Africans to Europe will turn them into hardworking Europeans.

Solution for Greece. Send them all to Germany.

Solution for Puerto Rico. Send them all to Manhattan.

Odd, but PR community in NY lags behind Jews and other successful groups by a mile.

* We hear so much crap about legacy of ‘Jim Crow’ but nothing about the ‘genecy’ of racial differences.

* The rolling pogrom against white children rolls on.

Anyone who thought they were only going to target prole white kids and you were going to be able to buy safety for yours – think again.

* When they can’t settle, they start withdrawing. When they can no longer withdraw, they shut down. Then they go extinct.

The USA needs to stay majority Anglo-American, because no other group has enough of a stake in holding it together.

The founding of America as a propositional nation was a mistake ab initio. From the beginning, the country should have been explicitly acknowledged as the Anglo-American homeland. That’s how de Toqueville perceived the place when he visited.

The American Dream is Already Dead: How Jason Richwine is Actually Right in His US Immigration Policy that Disfavours Races with Lower Average IQ

Timothy Tang writes:

In regards to Jason Richwine’s Harvard dissertation that discriminates different racial groups in immigration policy, what he said about races with lower average IQ pulling down the average IQ of Americans is actually true.

First of all, the minority few of the other racial groups who are the exception that have high IQ and well-educated would most probably make it in their home country, and would not require to migrate so far to the United States for greater opportunities to earn a better living or even just to live a more abundant wealthy life.

The United States is one of the cheapest and easiest countries in the world for lower skilled immigrants to migrate to. Without the US having proper immigration safeguards, the lowest skilled immigrants from all over the world can easily make their way there.

The majority of those who would have to migrate to the US would be those who would seek lower-skilled jobs, and would compete with the lower-skilled lower social classes of American citizens for jobs. This would lead to greater job competition among them, leading to the lower-social classes of US citizens to become poorer in the end.

Allowing in such immigrants is to take in the social-economic problems of other countries and adding it all together in the United States. If the US handles all the ‘economic rejects’ coming from other countries, it is the lower-classes of US citizens who will pay the biggest price.

Because the US is one of the most heavily targeted countries for the lower skilled immigrants from all over the world, it has to implement very strict immigration safeguards to protect the livelihood of the lower-classes of Americans.

People who oppose the rule such as politicians, TV personalities, writers, students, journalists etc are often the ones who are financially well-cushioned or have already made it in society so they would not feel the pinch and would not understand the social-economics problems that would surface for the lower social classes of American citizens. They should first consider the well-being of the lower social classes of Americans before worrying about the well-being of immigrants. They want to protect racial equality at the cost of causing the poor in America to become poorer, which will only widen the social income gap….

The bottom line is that the US has to worry first about the well-being of its own lower-class citizens. It is currently in no healthy economic state to perform charity by catering to any exceptional few(and overlook the rest). If it wants to perform ‘social-economic charity’ at the sake of being ‘politically-correct’ and ‘fair’ then it is the lower classes that will suffer the most.

The American dream is already dead, now is the time for the US to reduce its losses.

LAT: It’s official: Latinos now outnumber whites in California

Los Angeles Times:

The demographic shift has been a long time coming. In 1970, the 2.4 million Latinos in California accounted for 12% of the population, while the 15.5 million whites in the state made up more than three-quarters of residents, according to state figures. By 1990, the Latino population jumped to 7.7 million, or about 25% of the state’s population.

The Latino population is relatively young, with a median age of about 29, while the aging white population has a median age of 45. State demographers project Latinos will account for about 49% of Californians by 2060.

“It is going to accelerate,” Suro said. “This is really the beginning of a new phase that will play out over another generation.”

Los Angeles Times commenters don’t sound so enthusiastic:

* I look forward to Mexicans becoming the majority… after all, they invented a lot of great things and are a highly educated group of people…hahahahhaaaa…

* There goes your tax base California.

* Not shocking. There’s a reason that California has 1/3rd of the country’s welfare cases and the country’s highest poverty rate (25%).

* gee this rise in latinos corresponds to an improvement in California’s economy and overall livability. NOT!!

* I am SO looking forward to a state with a populace with the equivalent of an 8th grade education! There are only so many gardener and McDonald’s jobs available… But they are all good, practicing Catholics and making babies – God forbid birth control – is what they do best! It is a race to the bottom!

* Good! As a Caucasian-American (you can’t say “white” anymore), where do I go to apply for my minority benefits and preferential minority treatment???

* This is a very telling story – especially when it come to the decreasing wages in California. Hispanics, as a culture in the United States, are an uneducated group. Their lack of education will result in a continued decline of the State and those who work here. Construction jobs were once great paying jobs – now most are occupied by uneducated hispanics who have negotiated salaries downward. If fact, this is what they have done with every labor job in the State – negotiated the salary downward. This behavior has created greater profits than ever for elite business owners while simultaneously eradicating the middle class. Unfortunately this trend will only accelerate as the hispanic population continues to grow and the gap between the rich and the poor will continue to widen.

* As someone who is neither White nor ‘Latino’, I think this demographic change is horrible in every way imaginable. The loss of the majority is a huge loss in terms of national identity.

* Whites have a responsible birthrate and the Hispanics an irresponsible birthrate. This is the result. This planet cannot absorb unlimited population growth. And comparing to New Mexico is specious. New Mexico’s Hispanics have been there for many generations and most are as ‘anglo’ as the rest of us. It’s California that’s trying to absorb millions of poorly educated, low skilled, non-English speaking workers. With the current Hispanic high school graduation rate that isn’t going to change anytime soon.

* So will white people get minority benefits now?
Will the murder of that woman on the pier in SF be considered a hate crime?
Can straight white males be a protected class like every other racial or sexual demographic in the country?

* There’s nothing about latinos that make a demographic majority be reassuring. New Mexico and Puerto Rico are crime ridden, welfare dependent latino cesspools. With latinos’ high dropout rate, high illegitimacy rate, high welfare use, high crime rate, California is assured to be the next new failed Latin American entity.

HEATHER MACDONALD WROTE IN 2006:

Unless the life chances of children raised by single mothers suddenly improve, the explosive growth of the U.S. Hispanic population over the next couple of decades does not bode well for American social stability. Hispanic immigrants bring near–Third World levels of fertility to America, coupled with what were once thought to be First World levels of illegitimacy. (In fact, family breakdown is higher in many Hispanic countries than here.) Nearly half of the children born to Hispanic mothers in the U.S. are born out of wedlock, a proportion that has been increasing rapidly with no signs of slowing down. Given what psychologists and sociologists now know about the much higher likelihood of social pathology among those who grow up in single-mother households, the Hispanic baby boom is certain to produce more juvenile delinquents, more school failure, more welfare use, and more teen pregnancy in the future.

The government social-services sector has already latched onto this new client base; as the Hispanic population expands, so will the demands for a larger welfare state. Since conservative open-borders advocates have yet to acknowledge the facts of Hispanic family breakdown, there is no way to know what their solution to it is. But they had better come up with one quickly, because the problem is here—and growing.

The dimensions of the Hispanic baby boom are startling. The Hispanic birthrate is twice as high as that of the rest of the American population. That high fertility rate—even more than unbounded levels of immigration—will fuel the rapid Hispanic population boom in the coming decades. By 2050, the Latino population will have tripled, the Census Bureau projects. One in four Americans will be Hispanic by mid-century, twice the current ratio. In states such as California and Texas, Hispanics will be in the clear majority. Nationally, whites will drop from near 70 percent of the total population in 2000 to just half by 2050. Hispanics will account for 46 percent of the nation’s added population over the next two decades, the Pew Hispanic Center reports.

But it’s the fertility surge among unwed Hispanics that should worry policymakers. Hispanic women have the highest unmarried birthrate in the country—over three times that of whites and Asians, and nearly one and a half times that of black women, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Every 1,000 unmarried Hispanic women bore 92 children in 2003 (the latest year for which data exist), compared with 28 children for every 1,000 unmarried white women, 22 for every 1,000 unmarried Asian women, and 66 for every 1,000 unmarried black women. Forty-five percent of all Hispanic births occur outside of marriage, compared with 24 percent of white births and 15 percent of Asian births. Only the percentage of black out-of-wedlock births—68 percent—exceeds the Hispanic rate. But the black population is not going to triple over the next few decades.

As if the unmarried Hispanic birthrate weren’t worrisome enough, it is increasing faster than among other groups. It jumped 5 percent from 2002 to 2003, whereas the rate for other unmarried women remained flat. Couple the high and increasing illegitimacy rate of Hispanics with their higher overall fertility rate, and you have a recipe for unstoppable family breakdown.

The only bright news in this demographic disaster story concerns teen births. Overall teen childbearing in the U.S. declined for the 12th year in a row in 2003, having dropped by more than a third since 1991. Yet even here, Hispanics remain a cause for concern. The rate of childbirth for Mexican teenagers, who come from by far the largest and fastest-growing immigrant population, greatly outstrips every other group. The Mexican teen birthrate is 93 births per every 1,000 girls, compared with 27 births for every 1,000 white girls, 17 births for every 1,000 Asian girls, and 65 births for every 1,000 black girls. To put these numbers into international perspective, Japan’s teen birthrate is 3.9, Italy’s is 6.9, and France’s is 10. Even though the outsize U.S. teen birthrate is dropping, it continues to inflict unnecessary costs on the country, to which Hispanics contribute disproportionately.

To grasp the reality behind those numbers, one need only talk to people working on the front lines of family breakdown. Social workers in Southern California, the national epicenter for illegal Hispanic immigrants and their progeny, are in despair over the epidemic of single parenting. Not only has illegitimacy become perfectly acceptable, they say, but so has the resort to welfare and social services to cope with it.

Dr. Ana Sanchez delivers babies at St. Joseph’s Hospital in the city of Orange, California, many of them to Hispanic teenagers. To her dismay, they view having a child at their age as normal. A recent patient just had her second baby at age 17; the baby’s father is in jail. But what is “most alarming,” Sanchez says, is that the “teens’ parents view having babies outside of marriage as normal, too. A lot of the grandmothers are single as well; they never married, or they had successive partners. So the mom sends the message to her daughter that it’s okay to have children out of wedlock.”

Sanchez feels almost personally involved in the problem: “I’m Hispanic myself. I wish I could find out what the Asians are doing right.” She guesses that Asian parents’ passion for education inoculates their children against teen pregnancy and the underclass trap. “Hispanics are not picking that up like the Asian kids,” she sighs.

Conservatives who support open borders are fond of invoking “Hispanic family values” as a benefit of unlimited Hispanic immigration. Marriage is clearly no longer one of those family values. But other kinds of traditional Hispanic values have survived—not all of them necessarily ideal in a modern economy, however. One of them is the importance of having children early and often. “It’s considered almost a badge of honor for a young girl to have a baby,” says Peggy Schulze of Chrysalis House, an adoption agency in Fresno. (Fresno has one of the highest teen pregnancy rates in California, typical of the state’s heavily Hispanic farm districts.) It is almost impossible to persuade young single Hispanic mothers to give up their children for adoption, Schulze says. “The attitude is: ‘How could you give away your baby?’ I don’t know how to break through.”

The most powerful Hispanic family value—the tight-knit extended family—facilitates unwed child rearing. A single mother’s relatives often step in to make up for the absence of the baby’s father. I asked Mona, a 19-year-old parishioner at St. Joseph’s Church in Santa Ana, California, if she knew any single mothers. She laughed: “There are so many I can’t even name them.” Two of her cousins, aged 25 and 19, have children without having husbands. The situation didn’t seem to trouble this churchgoer too much. “They’ll be strong enough to raise them. It’s totally okay with us,” she said. “We’re very close; we’re there to support them. They’ll do just fine.”

As Mona’s family suggests, out-of-wedlock child rearing among Hispanics is by no means confined to the underclass. The St. Joseph’s parishioners are precisely the churchgoing, blue-collar workers whom open-borders conservatives celebrate. Yet this community is as susceptible as any other to illegitimacy. Fifty-year-old Irma and her husband, Rafael, came legally from Mexico in the early 1970s. Rafael works in a meatpacking plant in Brea; they have raised five husky boys who attend church with them. Yet Irma’s sister—a homemaker like herself, also married to a factory hand—is now the grandmother of two illegitimate children, one by each daughter. “I saw nothing in the way my sister and her husband raised her children to explain it,” Irma says. “She gave them everything.” One of the fathers of Irma’s young nieces has four other children by a variety of different mothers. His construction wages are being garnished for child support, but he is otherwise not involved in raising his children.

The fathers of these illegitimate children are often problematic in even more troubling ways. Social workers report that the impregnators of younger Hispanic women are with some regularity their uncles, not necessarily seen as a bad thing by the mother’s family. Alternatively, the father may be the boyfriend of the girl’s mother, who then continues to stay with the grandmother. Older men seek out young girls in the belief that a virgin cannot get pregnant during her first intercourse, and to avoid sexually transmitted diseases.

The tradition of starting families young and expand- ing them quickly can come into conflict with more modern American mores. Ron Storm, the director of the Hillview Acres foster-care home in Chino, tells of a 15-year-old girl who was taken away from the 21-year-old father of her child by a local child-welfare department. The boyfriend went to jail, charged with rape. But the girl’s parents complained about the agency’s interference, and eventually both the girl and her boyfriend ended up going back to Mexico, presumably to have more children. “At 15, as the Quinceañera tradition celebrates, you’re considered ready for marriage,” says Storm. Or at least for childbearing; the marriage part is disappearing.

But though older men continue to take advantage of younger women, the age gap between the mother and the father of an illegitimate child is quickly closing. Planned Parenthood of Orange and San Bernardino Counties tries to teach young fathers to take responsibility for their children. “We’re seeing a lot more 13- and 14-year-old fathers,” says Kathleen Collins, v.p. of health education. The day before we spoke, Scott Montoya, an Orange County sheriff’s deputy, arrested two 14-year-old boys who were bragging about having sexual relations with a cafeteria worker from an Olive Garden restaurant. “It’s now all about getting girls pregnant when you’re age 15,” he says. One 18-year-old in the Planned Parenthood fathers’ program has two children by two different girls and is having sex with five others, says health worker Jason Warner. “A lot of [the adolescent sexual behavior] has to do with getting respect from one’s peers,” observes Warner.

Normally, the fathers, of whatever age, take off. “The father may already be married or in prison or doing drugs,” says Amanda Gan, director of operations for Toby’s House, a maternity home in Dana Point, California. Mona, the 19-year-old parishioner at St. Joseph’s Church, says that the boys who impregnated her two cousins are “nowhere to be found.” Her family knows them but doesn’t know if they are working or in jail.

Two teen mothers at the Hillview Acres home represent the outer edge of Hispanic family dysfunction. Yet many aspects of their lives are typical. Though these teenagers’ own mothers were unusually callous and irresponsible, the social milieu in which they were raised is not unusual.

Irene’s round, full face makes her look younger than her 14 years, certainly too young to be a mother. But her own mother’s boyfriend repeatedly forced sex on her, with the mother’s acquiescence. The result was Irene’s baby, Luz. Baby Luz has an uncle her own age, Irene’s new 13-month-old brother. Like Irene, Irene’s mother had her first child at 14, and produced five more over the next 16 years, all of whom went into foster care. Irene’s father committed suicide before she was old enough to know him. The four fathers of her siblings are out of the picture, too: one of them, the father of her seven-year-old brother and five-year-old sister, was deported back to Mexico after he showed up drunk for a visit with his children, in violation of his probation conditions.

Irene is serene and articulate—remarkably so, considering that in her peripatetic early life in Orange County she went to school maybe twice a week. She likes to sing and to read books that are sad, she says, especially books by Dave Pelzer, a child-abuse victim who has published three best-selling memoirs about his childhood trauma. She says she will never get married: “I don’t want another man in my life. I don’t want that experience again.”

Eighteen-year-old Jessica at least escaped rape, but her family experiences were bad enough. The large-limbed young woman, whose long hair is pulled back tightly from her heart-shaped face, grew up in the predominantly Hispanic farming community of Indio in the Coachella Valley. She started “partying hard” in fifth grade, she says—at around the same time that her mother, separated from her father, began using drugs and going clubbing. By the eighth grade, Jessica and her mother were drinking and smoking marijuana together. Jessica’s family had known her boyfriend’s family since she was four; when she had her first child by him—she was 14 and he was 21—her mother declared philosophically that she had always known that it would happen. “It was okay with her, so long as he continued to give her drugs.”

Jessica originally got pregnant to try to clean up her life, she says. “I knew what I was doing was not okay, so having a baby was a way for me to stop doing what I was doing. In that sense, the baby was planned.” She has not used drugs since her first pregnancy, though she occasionally drinks. After her daughter was born, she went to live with her boyfriend in a filthy trailer without plumbing; they scrounged food from dumpsters, despite the income from his illegal drug business. They planned to get married, but by the time she got pregnant again with a son, “We were having a lot of problems. We’d be holding hands, and he’d be looking at other girls. I didn’t want him to touch me.” Eventually, the county welfare agency removed her and put her in foster care with her two children.

Both Jessica and her caddish former boyfriend illustrate the evanescence of the celebrated Hispanic “family values.” Her boyfriend’s family could not be more traditional. Two years ago, Jessica went back to Mexico to celebrate her boyfriend’s parents’ 25th wedding anniversary and the renewal of their wedding vows. Jessica’s own mother got married at 15 to her father, who was ten years her senior. Her father would not let his wife work; she was a “stay-at-home wife,” Jessica says. But don’t blame the move to the U.S. for the behavior of younger generations; the family crack-up is happening even faster in Latin America.

Jessica’s mother may have been particularly negligent, but Jessica’s experiences are not so radically different from those of her peers. “Everybody’s having babies now,” she says. “The Coachella Valley is filled with girls’ pregnancies. Some girls live with their babies’ dads; they consider them their husbands.” These cohabiting relationships rarely last, however, and a new cohort of fatherless children goes out into the world.

Despite the strong family support, the prevalence of single parenting among Hispanics is producing the inevitable slide into the welfare system. “The girls aren’t marrying the guys, so they are married to the state,” Dr. Sanchez observes. Hispanics now dominate the federal Women, Infants, and Children free food program; Hispanic enrollment grew over 25 percent from 1996 to 2002, while black enrollment dropped 12 percent and white enrollment dropped 6.5 percent. Illegal immigrants can get WIC and other welfare programs for their American-born children. If Congress follows President Bush’s urging and grants amnesty to most of the 11 million illegal aliens in the country today, expect the welfare rolls to skyrocket as the parents themselves become eligible.

LAT: Cerritos College a model of boosting Latino students’ success, study finds

Los Angeles Times:

At El Camino, administrators began a policy several years ago of requiring incoming students to meet with counselors to map out an academic plan, said school spokeswoman Ann Marie Garten. The school also encourages students to take assessment tests so they are placed in appropriate level courses and aren’t overwhelmed.

Fewer Californians got into UC, while offers to foreign students rose
Fewer Californians got into UC, while offers to foreign students rose
At the Los Angeles Community College District, which includes East Los Angeles College, officials have increased efforts to try to enroll more high school students in college courses so they can get a head start.

Many Latinos come to community college unprepared in math and English and require remedial courses to catch up and graduate at lower rates than other ethnic groups. Only about 30% of Latino students who take a remedial math course even took a college-level math class; nearly 45% of Asians who took remedial math courses went on to higher levels, according to state statistics.

There’s no mention in the story that hispanics in the United States have an average IQ of about 90, compared to 85 for blacks, 100 for whites, 105 for East Asians and about 115 for Ashkenazi Jews.

Steve Sailer wrote in 2005:

Everyone across the political spectrum admits that the white-black test score gap is a major social problem, but nobody is thinking about the white-Hispanic test score gap, even though we have much more influence through immigration policy over whether Hispanics will be a large or huge proportion of the American population in the future. Fortunately, the facts are available, but they take a lot of digging to uncover.

Here’s the best estimate I’ve yet seen: A 2001 meta-analysis of 39 studies covering a total 5,696,519 individuals in America (aged 14 and above) came up with an overall difference of 0.72 standard deviations in g (the “general factor” in cognitive ability) between “Anglo” whites and Hispanics. The 95% confidence range of the studies ran from .60 to .88 standard deviations, so there’s not a huge amount of disagreement among the studies.

One standard deviation equals 15 IQ points, so that’s a gap of 10.8 IQ points, or an IQ of 89 on the Lynn-Vanhanen scale where white Americans equal 100. That would imply the average Hispanic would fall at the 24th percentile of the white IQ distribution. This inequality gets worse at higher IQs Assuming a normal distribution, 4.8% of whites would fall above 125 IQ versus only 0.9% of Hispanics, which explains why Hispanics are given ethnic preferences in prestige college admissions.

In contrast, 105 studies of 6,246,729 individuals found an overall white-black gap of 1.10 standard deviations, or 16.5 points. (I typically round this down to 1.0 standard deviation and 15 points). So, the white-Hispanic gap appears to be about 65% as large as the notoriously depressing white-black gap. (Warning: this 65% number does not come from a perfect apples to apples comparison because more studies are used in calculating the white-black difference than the white-Hispanic difference.)

Source: Roth, P. L., Bevier, C. A., Bobko, P., Switzer III, F. S. & Tyler, P. (2001) “Ethnic group differences in cognitive ability in employment and educational settings: a meta-analysis.” Personnel Psychology 54, 297–330.

This fits well with lots of other data. For example, Hispanics generally do almost as badly on the National Assessment of Educational Progress school achievement tests as blacks, but that average is dragged down by immigrant kids who have problems adjusting to English. The last time the NAEP asked about where the child was born was 1992, and Dr. Stefan Thernstrom of Harvard kindly provided me with the data from that examination. For foreign-born Hispanics, the typical gap versus non-Hispanic whites was 1.14 times as large as the black-white gap. But for American-born Hispanics, the gap between non-Hispanic whites and American-born Hispanics was 0.67 times as large as the gap between non-Hispanic whites and blacks, very similar to the 0.65 difference seen in the meta-analysis of IQs.

Black Guy Murders White Guy On DC Metro

I wonder if Obama will attend Kevin Joseph Sutherland’s funeral?

If a young black guy asks you for anything, you’re risking your life if you refuse.

Chaim Amalek:

This is depressingly predictable, but still worth noting: The Washington Post almost always offers a ‘comments’ section with each story it publishes. For example, a story on the economic situation in Greece has over 1600 comments. Except this one, about something much closer to home that directly impacts most of the Post’s readers. For this story, there are no comments. Nothing. The Post is owned by Corporate chieftain Jeff Bezos, who is supported by and who supports both democrats and republican politicians.

Also this story has gotten amazingly little national press play, especially considering that this attack occurred on the 4th of July in the early afternoon, and on a line with very heavy ridership. White lives count! Except when the national press corps is doing the counting. This sort of violence happens all the time in DC and usually gets no press.

I often go to the forums on “city data” for the kind of local discussion that one used to be able to get on radio. So for local reaction to the Metro stabbing, I checked out their DC forum ( http://www.city-data.com/forum/washington-dc/) . NOT ONE THREAD on this subject, NOT ONE COMMENT. Obviously this is not because the people of DC who use this forum don’t care, they care plenty. But they are being censored by those who control the DC city-data forum. And this is how it is in America today.

Court filing details violent struggle on Metro train in July 4 slaying

Jasper Spires boarded the Red Line Metro train at Rhode Island Avenue shortly before 1 p.m. on Saturday, joining fellow passengers from the District and elsewhere headed to various July 4 festivities, among them the Foo Fighters concert at RFK Stadium.

As the train rumbled toward its next stop at NoMa-Gallaudet, a three-minute ride, D.C. police said the 18-year-old Spires — who may have been high on synthetic drugs — tried to grab a cellphone tucked into the waistband of a recent American University graduate headed to a gathering with friends.

The two struggled, police said, and the terror began.

Police and a witness interviewed said passengers trapped in the moving train huddled at both ends of the car and watched in horror as Spires allegedly punched 24-year-old Kevin Joseph Sutherland until he fell to floor, then stabbed him until he was dead. Court documents say the victim was cut or stabbed 30 or 40 times in the chest, abdomen, back, side and arms. Police said the assailant then threw the victim’s cellphone and returned to stomp on Sutherland’s body.

“We were in a moving train,” said a 52-year-old woman who spoke on the condition she not be named because she is both a victim and a witness to a crime. “You’re not really sure what you need to do. . . . This man is holding a bloody knife. I don’t think anyone was going to try and stop him.”

Noise In Los Angeles Neighborhoods Correlates Strongly With Race

According to Howloud.net, 90035 is relatively quiet: Soundscore™:
72
Light

Vehicle noise: Light
Airport noise: Quiet
No airport within 6 mi.
Local Commercial Noise: Heavy
Local noise sources:
BEST & FAST AUTOMOTIVE
SHELL
LIVONIA GLATT MARKET

Noise in Los Angeles correlates with race. White people live in relatively quiet areas, blacks live in the loudest areas.

If you’ve lived in a mixed neighborhood, you know that Jews tend to be louder than WASPs, that whites tend to be quieter than blacks and latinos, that blacks tend to be the loudest of all groups.

Comment to Steve Sailer:

* To me in a sane society really requires only five or six key attributes
a) there are borders
b) the successful majority race\civilization does not pander to any minority, much less a civilizationally disfunctional and more primitive one
c) men and women are understood to be different and being wives and mothers is the most important thing women do
d) having children and passing on our genes and culture is the most important activity society needs to make work; and we want the best, smartest, healthiest men and women to be doing it, and the incompetent not to be doing it
e) we value and celebrate the productive, righteous and decent, and don’t hold up, rent-seeking, rip-offs nor the disordered and depraved for anything but disapproval
f) criminals belong in jail or exile, without excuses
g) gay means light-hearted and carefree and a rainbow–what you get when the sun follows a rain shower–is pretty
