* I can pretty much guaranty that Bowers’s lived experience of Jewish oppression against him personally was insufficient for him to seek revenge – his hatred was given shape by third parties which in today’s context means hate sites (and he added to the echo chamber). * My heart goes out to the victims and their loved ones. The shooter claims he’s upset about the Muslim refugee importation program supported by HIAS, but he should take a good look at the Catholic church and Lutheran church, two of the biggest importers of Muslim “refugees”. How did he think Minnesota became North Somalia?

The left needs to decide on a consistent narrative. Whenever a mass shooting occurs, if the victims are white, the shooter is just “mentally ill”, but if the victims are non-white, the shooter is immediately pinned as evil hateful Satan reincarnate. Either they are all mentally ill, or they are all evil hateful Satan reincarnate, enough with the double standard.

* Jews are indeed over represented in media ownership and in Fortune 500 lists. The same media that was saying a few weeks ago that it was racist to point out that whites shouldn’t have the land they disproportionately own in South Africa stolen from them without compensation are now saying that it is anti-semitic to point out exactly what Jews themselves have bragged about in the past.

It is this kind of blatant hypocrisy that leads people to anti-semitism. People aren’t dumb. A lot of them see the truth. It’s not just that Jews own stuff that makes some anti-semitic, it’s that some of them in the media lie about it while hypocritically attacking other racial groups like Asians applying to Harvard or South African Whites who are or might be over represented elsewhere. If Jews had been more honest about this and had then condemned what the government of South Africa was about to do in stealing White properties, there would be a much stronger argument for “so what?” when it comes to people pointing out what I just did. However, Jews are NOT the superhumans some make them out to be and are, unfortunately, just as short-sighted as most other peoples.

* Even most Jews with very conservative, far right, or Alt-Right views and sympathies, like many Jewish readers and commentors at The Unz Review, are very uncomfortable and defensive about the topic of “jewish power” and regard it as irrelevant and a red herring promoted by anti-Semites.

* I don’t think Ron’s [Unz] eccentric personality or ethnicity has anything to do with the validity of his ideas.

They are wrong independently of who makes them.

His low agreeablity and anger at criticism however lead him to piling mistake upon mistake. My overall impression is of an overgrown adolescent saying things to annoy his square parents, not an intellectual interested in the truth. This is why he can’t even get people like Greg Cochran to engage with him.

* Pittsburgh has fewer immigrants than any other largish American city. Hispanics are noticeably absent from the area. It’s the one American city that still feels like America.

* Ron Unz: If he’d lived in CA, where probably something like 60% of the population comes from a recent immigrant background and 40+% is Hispanic, he’d have had a much more realistic view of immigrants. Even most overwhelmingly white states have lots of immigrants these days.

But he lived in a place that has very few, so he believed all the total nonsense he found on FoxNews and Breitbart.

Then he wandered around the Internet a little, and eventually discovered (correctly) that Jews were probably the group most strongly supportive of heavy immigration, which shocked him. Next, he also discovered (correctly) Jews had a great deal of control over the MSM, and decided that was the reason that the ongoing race war between whites and immigrants in CA wasn’t being reported.

Now it’s perfectly true that Jews are one of the most influential pro-immigration elements and also that they have huge MSM influence. The problem is that when you mix together with some of the crazy stuff from FoxNews/Breitbart, you end up with a pretty dangerous combination…

* It would be very helpful if other Jews would call these people out. Or if Jews organized to oppose immigration or defend the integrity of US borders. Where are they?

* Here’s a pro-tip: if you are hunting for liberal internationalists in Pittsburgh, Saturday morning services at a Conservative synagogue are a really lousy place to hunt. Your luck would be much better down at the Carnegie Mellon faculty club or even one of those Episcopal churches that have lesbian priests.

* The thing with Gab is that it was a worthwhile experiment in free speech & had much potential. Torba could have improved the moderation & decorum, but he made a stand and wasn’t very open to advice. Half of the problem is that too many folks got squeamish at the 1488 stuff and decided to bail out. If enough of a mass of more articulate folks had held firm, it would have tipped the balance and made it a more appealing site. If you want hard fought liberties to continue, it won’t always be a sunny walk in a meadow. Make a stand.

* Libel as in generalized negative statements about Jews purported as facts, such as Jews being dishonest.

Libel as in false, negative and defamatory statements about individual Jews. Examples:

1. Deborah Lipstadt, in the Holocaust post. Ron makes all kinds of assertions about hysterical or wrong statements in her book on Holocaust revisionists. Her book can be downloaded as a PDF from Library Genesis so it is particularly easy to check Ron’s claims. All his key statements about her were false, nor was Lipstadt the irrational screaming yenta he said she was. (He also compared her to a Jewish prostitute, which is pretty defamatory.) The Holocaust thread was closed so there is no opportunity to correct these blatant errors under the post.

2. Nurit Baytch, in the current Harvard admission discrimination post and earlier discussions of the same matter. She did a replication of Ron’s Jewish surname counting method on the Harvard undergraduate directory, coming up with 5-9% (consistent with Ron’s counts of National Merit PSAT high score lists). Instead of acknowledging or answering this at any time in the past 5 years, Ron attacks her as stupid, incompetent, “Jewish berserker”, “Jewish fanatic”, and similar terms. In reality Baytch never attacked Ron personally or did anything except address his statistical analysis.

3. Janet Mertz, also on the Harvard discrimination articles. Described in similar terms as Baytch although she very strictly limited herself to the numerical counting issues and was totally polite to Ron. I guess she is lucky Ron didn’t call her a hooker as he did to Lipstadt.

Baytch did more than one replication using J1J2, and each estimate was tighter than 5-9%. She counted the public directory, the Harvard-internal online directory, Facebook pages, and alumni directories. The lowest number was 5% and the highest 9%, and all the intervals were of width 1-2. I gave the min/max range as that’s what I remembered and any of the sub-estimates would have only made the point stronger.

Those replication tests, individually and in toto, were consistent with (i.e. in the same range as) Ron’s estimate of 6-7 percent of the PSAT high scores, contradicting his claims of massive overrepresentation of Jews at Harvard vs NMS once the same method is used on both data sets.

That is Nurit Baytch’s key (and unanswered) argument. She refined it further in the paper by accounting for state by state differences in NMS cutoffs and representation at Harvard, among other analyses, but the basic problem for Ron’s argument is the above. Ron has spent 5 years talking about everything else including NB’s physical appearance, intelligence, ethnicity and personality, and other things from her paper besides the replication tests. His summary of the situation in the current Harvard admissions piece omits her main point, the replications, and contains (incorrect) arguments refuting other parts of her paper. What is needed is an explanation of why the J1-J2 replications are not devastating to his argument. e.g., if the J1J2 estimators undercount Harvard Jews, why wouldn’t they undercount NMS-Jews to a similar extent?

Ron and Baytch derive different estimates (25% and ~13%) from the Crimson survey with 9.5% self-reported Jews. As it happens, Baytch’s method is much better there too. But it does not touch the matter of “replication failure”.

Ron refused to answer my questions about this in the Harvard admission thread, based on the non sequitur that something or other is wrong with me, as though (even if true) that could be an answer to calculations by a third party.

With regard to the slander of Lipstadt, things I remember at the moment are the claim that she used the Soviet estimate of 4 million dead at Auschwitz, when in fact she made of point of stating that nobody considers that number credible but it appeared on a plaque at the memorial site; and the claim that she dramatically calls someone the “godfather” of American holocaust denial (this word does not appear in the book). Of course there is also generalized invective about her hysterics, incompetence and knowledge limited to History 101 classes at college. But the factual claims about her book are wrong.

I have not seen anything personal from Baytch to Unz except that when he called her too dumb to understand simple algebra, she pointed out that she was a Harvard summa cum laude physics graduate and Ron only a magna. If you know a more serious example let us know, and also how it compares to Ron’s remarks about her.

* Chomsky isn’t very welcome to publish on oped pages in the US. He’s a big deal abroad, but tends to be shunned by the mainstream media in the US.

* The “crank” phenomenon (Unz, Fischer, Chomsky, etc.) is not uniquely Jewish but Jews are overrepresented even beyond their overrepresentation in the far right tail of the IQ distribution (which is already considerable). Aside from the genetic IQ factors, I think that there are cultural factors which account for the difference. As someone mentioned, the Jewish apostate or convert (who knows and betrays the “secrets of the Jews”) has for centuries been a sort of stock figure in Western culture and who often received praise, honors and reinforcement from the larger society. Whereas vice versa is pretty much non-existent.

Dennis Prager writes:

For Jews to blame the most pro-Israel president since Harry Truman — the only president with a Jewish child and Jewish grandchildren, moreover — for increasing anti-Semitism is another example of a truism this Jew has known all his life: Unlike Jewish liberals, who get most of their values from Judaism, Jewish leftists are ethnically Jewish but get their values from leftism.

The biggest increase in anti-Semitism in the last 10 or so years has come from the left. Just ask young Jews who wear yarmulkes or are vocally pro-Israel on most American college campuses. And this generation’s threat of Jewish annihilation comes from Israel’s Iranian and Arab enemies.

As a Jew who attends synagogue every Shabbat, and as an advocate for the carrying of concealed weapons, I fervently pray we will not need armed guards at American synagogues. America’s uniqueness has been exemplified by the fact that Jews do not need armed guards in their synagogues.

My synagogue is on the west side of Los Angeles. On a rough guess, about half of my congregants support Donald Trump. Many of those who do, but certainly not all, are from the Persian community. We have had frank discussions. They know I deplore many of the things he says and I oppose much of what he does. They know that I have criticized, publicly and privately, the inflammatory rhetoric of his presentations and warned them of its effects. They also know that we respect and listen to one another, that I do not preach politics at them but do speak with them and learn from them, and that our relationship in many cases is not only one of affection, but of genuine love.

So when I see major American Jewish figures tell me that my congregants are illegitimate, my blood boils a little bit. After the tragedy in Pittsburgh, perhaps because I spend so much of my time at the bedside of the sick and dying, I expected that the first impulse of Jews in particular would be to simply offer messages of sorrow and condolence.

It’s what I imagined I would read when I opened “A prayer for Squirrel Hill— And for American Jewry” from Franklin Foer, whom I know somewhat and have always respected. Instead, I read this: “Any strategy for enhancing the security of American Jewry should involve shunning Trump’s Jewish enablers. Their money should be refused, their presence in synagogues not welcome.”

In other words, more than half of my Shabbat morning congregants, and in some more traditional synagogues, almost all of them, should have the doors barred against their entry. Jews who make minyans, pay shiva calls, underwrite nursing homes and kindergartens — people who make Judaism possible, with their flawed but real human presence, for other people — should be cast out of our midst because of the levers they pull in the privacy of a voting booth. And what, after all, would a Jew who fled from Iran know about anti-Semitism — or protecting the Jewish community?

As Shabbat ended in Los Angeles, a city where in 1999 there was a terror attack against a Jewish Community Center, I saw this from another reporter whose work I have always esteemed very highly, Julia Ioffe: “And a word to my fellow American Jews: This President makes this possible. Here. Where you live. I hope the embassy move over there, where you don’t live was worth it.”

The calculation here, I suppose, is that people voted for Trump to get an embassy move and their vote proxy murdered other Jews. How careful should one be, should a distinguished reporter be, when accusing others of such enormities, even indirectly? How do people think this message will fall on the ears of those who fled from Iran, to be told that they are in fact guilty in the death of Pittsburgh’s Jews?

Or — even more shamefully — on the ears of Judah Samet. Mr. Samet, a Holocaust survivor, escaped death by 4 minutes because he was a little late to shul. He is also a strong supporter of Trump. Frank, Julia: Would you stand before this 80-year-old man, not in a tweet or online piece, but face to face, and tell him he is responsible for the death of his friends, the people with whom he prays each Shabbat? Would you bar him from the shul where he almost died, again, at the hands of Jew haters? Really? And that would make us the righteous ones?

The mass shooting at a Pittsburgh synagogue reportedly happened during a ceremony for the children of a gay couple.

The Delta Foundation of Pittsburgh, a local LGBTQ group, revealed that the violent attack occurred during a bris — a Jewish rite of male circumcision — for the couple’s adopted twins. Their identities have not yet been made public.

“We were just informed that this morning’s tragedy was happening during a Briss for a set of twins adopted by a gay couple,” the organization posted Saturday on Facebook. “Our hearts and prayers go out to all that were involved including the members of the Synagogue, law-enforcement and first responders.”

“We have witnessed the worst of America this morning in our town Pittsburgh. More than ever we must come together as people and change the temperament of our country,” the statement concluded.

There are a reported 11 fatalities and six injured in the attack on the Tree of Life Congregation. After surrendering to police, assailant Robert D. Bowers said he “wanted all Jews to die,” according to a Pittsburgh police report. Bowers was charged with 29 criminal accounts by federal officials.

LGBTQ groups and public figures have condemned the bigotry that fueled this attack. In the immediate wake of the shooting, Chad Griffin, president of the Human Rights Campaign, noted how the likely hate crime was “motivated by anti-Semitism.”

“Our hearts are with the community of the Tree of Life Synagogue, the first responders who bravely rushed into danger to save lives, the people of Pittsburgh, and all those impacted by this tragic act of hate violence,” Griffin said in a statement released by the LGBTQ organization.

Sarah McBride, HRC’s national press secretary, likewise called out the “real, insidious, and pervasive” anti-Semitism in the United States. The Tree of Life shooting is the deadliest attack on the country’s Jewish community in decades.

All I could reply was: “Honey, many people will hate you if you ask those questions. Are you sure you want to ask those questions?”

Actually, his Wikipedia entry doesn’t list that for which Mr. Easterbrook is most notorious.

I regard him as a “thinking man’s James Fallows.” Whereas he writes essays for “respectable” venues such as Atlantic and The New Republic, on “respectable” topics such as the environment or national defense spending, his thoughts sometimes take him to contrarian or iconoclastic positions. For example, it was Easterbrook who wrote about how the cheaper Northrup F-20 may be a better figher plane than the General Dynamics F-16, so why was the U. S. His notoriety, however, derives from the time that he thought-out-loud an iconoclastic thought in public (I am paraphrasing), “When so many Jews are victims of violent attacks, in Israel, here at home, and in many other parts of the world, why do Jewish executives in Hollywood think it is a good idea to derive corporate profits from so many films glorifying violence?”

Who boy, did that get a reaction, for Crimethink on three separate levels. One was thinking that words or actions by specific Jewish persons could in any way even remotely contribute to or in the slightest way be responsible for Jews as a group being victims of violence connected to anti-Semitic hate. The second was invoking the anti-Semitic stereotype of monetary greed, especially the alleged pursuit of profits in disregard of any ethical or moral or social consequences. The third was the anti-Semitic trope that “(the) Jews run Hollywood.”

Given the buzz saw of public criticism Mr. Easterbrook ran into, I was thinking that he would get un-personed, air-brushed out of the Party photos. Commenting at Little Green Footballs, which was the Blog of Noticing of its day in the era before Charles Johnson terminated his post 9-11 truce with the conservative, neo-conservative and nativist Right, I ran into that same buzz saw by attempting to defend Easterbrook in suggesting that, yes, there are persons of Jewish heritage who serve as Hollywood executives, this material fact may have been the consequence of many Hollywood founders migrating to the U.S. as a result of Czarist-era persecution. Under the Hayes Code a Jewish movie executive accepted the wisdom of restrictions on movie content set by a Catholic priest as a win-win both for studio profits and social peace, so suggesting that movie moguls had a self interest in moderating the content of their movies (think of the recent iSteve thread where violent movies are discussed), wasn’t off base. Other commenters at LGF called my arguments “garbage.”

This latest tragedy is a Progressive Agenda two-fer. Because a person off-their-nut shoots and kills people, we have to give up our guns. Because a white anti-Semite off-his-nut shoots and kills Jewish people, we have to give up any public remarks regarding how either specific Jewish persons or factions within or the Jewish community as a whole participate in our multi-cultural American society?

* Steve Sailer: Gregg Easterbrook lost half of his income when he got fired from ESPN.com for supposedly anti-Semitic blogging criticizing Quentin Tarantino’s “Kill Bill” at … Marty Peretz’s TNR. Peretz, no shrinking violet in defense of Jewish interests, was fine with what Easterbrook said about how Jewish movie executives should not rush to fund the gore fests of Tarantino (who is not Jewish). Easterbrook is an old member, IIRC, of the Kinsley Klique of talented opinion journalists along with Fallows, Kaus, etc.

But he got fired from his football column at Disney/ESPN for several years. One thing that is striking to me is that I wouldn’t go out of my way to unjustly injure the younger brother of … heavyweight federal judge Frank Easterbrook. But that consideration of prudence didn’t stop Michael Eisner and/or his minions.

Eventually, after Eisner was out (whether coincidentally or not), Easterbrook got his football column back at ESPN.com.

* All victims are equal, but some are more equal than others.

I don’t recall quite the same outpouring of denunciations and calls for rethinking free speech, etc in the wake of Dylann Roof’s killings of blacks, or for that matter, Sergeant Bales’ killings of Muslim women and children. We seem to be divided on Muslim terrorism; half of us call for the most spectacularly genocidal responses, while the other half try to pretend such attacks didn’t happen. As some have noted, black killings of whites go completely uncovered.

For some reason, the victims in Saturday’s attacks are different; could someone specify what the distinction is?

* Ron Unz: Well, just as I expected, my morning NYT had wall-to-wall coverage of the Pittsburgh shooting, naturally with much of it focusing on the horrific anti-Semitism involved, plus the right-wing anti-immigrant angle.

It certainly does seem to be the worst anti-Jewish attack in modern American history. The Times described the previous most deadly anti-Semitic attack as having been the killing of a family of four in 1985, none of whom were Jewish, and the killing of three non-Jews as recently as 2014.

Given that all these previous examples of monstrous anti-Jewish attacks actually killed no Jews, that made me a little curious, so I went to Wikipedia, that font of our Respectable Truth. Unsurprisingly, there’s a huge 10,000 word article on the massive history of Anti-Semitism in the United States, but as far as I can tell, it doesn’t list a single case of an actual anti-Jewish killing.

Presumably some Jews must have died in the large number of random mass-shootings we’ve had in recent decades, but when was the last time any Jews actually died in anti-Semitic attacks? Considering the gigantic decades-long MSM focus on anti-Semitic violence, there must surely have been at least some since the celebrated Leo Frank case of 100 years ago, but offhand I can’t think of any.

A Prayer for Squirrel Hill—And for American Jewry

The Pittsburgh synagogue killings show that dormant hatreds have reawakened.

As a young man traveling across Europe in the 1990s, I went to attend services in Amsterdam, to listen to the reading of the Torah and sing ancient liturgy. Throughout my life I had experienced the Sabbath as a moment of uncommon generosity, when doors were flung open and extra settings placed at the table. I felt like an invader, however, when I approached the brick fence of the Dutch synagogue.

There was no usher to greet me, no old man to point me in the direction of a prayer book and a kippah. A bald Israeli sat behind thick glass, next to an iron turnstile, and asked for my passport. He viewed me as a potential assailant, which was entirely understandable, given the dangers of the world. But it also made it impossible for me to feel the comfort that is the precondition for spirituality.

Many years later, I stood outside my own synagogue in Washington, D.C. It was a shirtsleeves spring day with a breeze so perfect that it felt set by thermostat. To celebrate Israel’s birthday, the Hebrew school hosted a fair on a plaza. As I watched my kids make their way from game to game, then dance with abandon, I saw two Israeli journalists I knew. They began to ask anthropological questions about the event they were witnessing. One of them paused to marvel at the normality (or is it abnormality?) of Jewish existence in America, so free from anxiety and from a sense of vulnerability. It was as if the spectacle on display obviated the need for celebration, he quipped. Perhaps America was another Zion.

The Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (hias) has been reported as a source of the anti-Semitic rage of Robert D. Bowers, the man allegedly responsible for killing 11 people at a Pittsburgh synagogue. The organization was an expression of the achievement of American Jewry. There has been only a small trickle of Jewish immigrants to aid since the exodus from the Soviet Union, so the beneficent hand is extended to strangers. Instead of pulling up the ladder of self-advancement behind it, hias attempted to boost others up that ladder. Perhaps this impulse toward generosity motivated Bowers to murder.

In Donald Trump’s abhorrence for globalism and in his inability to smack down David Duke, it was easy to hear the ominous chords of history, to see how he was activating dormant hatreds with his conspiratorial tropes. But it was always easy to see how Jews, with their well-developed institutions and communal resources, were not the most vulnerable targets of Trump’s racialism. I felt pride that so much of the organized Jewish community resisted the impulse to elevate its own problems above those of the more vulnerable.

Of course, this was not every corner of the Jewish community. After the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, Gary Cohn couldn’t bring himself to resign from his job. After Squirrel Hill, Jared Kushner and Sheldon Adelson will likely stand their ground. In response to this massacre, every synagogue will protect itself with great security, with more cameras and more guards. They will do what is necessary to create a sense of safety, which will also invariably inhibit the sense of escaping from the secular world. The gunman committed a crime on Shabbat, and it will reverberate as a crime against Shabbat.

Any strategy for enhancing the security of American Jewry should involve shunning Trump’s Jewish enablers. Their money should be refused, their presence in synagogues not welcome. They have placed their community in danger.

Micah Johnson is another black man who murdered five Dallas police officers and wounded nine others, also in the wake of protests over the death of Alton Sterling in 2016.

James Hodgkinson was the left-wing activist and Bernie Sanders campaign volunteer who attempted to assassinate the Republican congressional baseball team in Arlington, VA in 2017.

Fredrick Scott is the serial killer who murdered five white men on Kansas City hiking trails from 2016 to 2017. He was motivated by a desire to “kill all white people.”

Emmanuel Samson is a Sudanese migrant who murdered one woman and shot seven other worshipers in a Tennessee church service in 2017 as revenge for Dylann Roof’s mass shooting in South Carolina.

None of these men are household names. None of them sparked “national conversations” about the need to tone down anti-white or anti-conservative hatred and prejudice. No flags were removed because of their actions.

* There has been a lot of obsessing over Jews lately, which strikes me as a little odd given that Jewish power in the US, at least culturally speaking, has been on the decline for about 15 years.

The sentiment that led to this attack is an unnatural obsession with Jews. That’s something people on all sides of the issue ought to consider, because it just isn’t socially healthy, and it can lead deranged individuals to act as Mr. Bowers did.

Jews are neither diabolical beings imbued with supernatural powers nor angelic eternal victims of brutish gentiles. Actually, they are for the most part ordinary human beings, but for whatever reason a lot of people seem to think otherwise.

Maybe Jews have been dehumanized to some extent, and that’s a problem. But the typically proffered remedy for this is “ban all criticism of Jews,” which only exacerbates the issue, because all people have flaws and in the absence of criticism these flaws can worsen and aggravate more people.

So what can be done?

At this point, maybe it’s time for the US to adopt a formal nationalities policy. That could take some of the mystique away from the issue while also allowing for communal rights and a sense of security for those who prefer to remain distinct from the majority. It would allow the majority to exercise communal rights as well, which could ease tensions as in cases where a particular nationality is overly dominant in one elite institution or another. This way Jews and white gentiles could negotiate on a more equal and transparent stage, which ultimately would be better for both peoples.

We see the same phenomenon on Islamic forums. If you say that the West must be destroyed or the Jews must go often enough then some people are going to take it literally.

For example, professional soccer players going about their work kicking balls may call opponents “motherfucker” as much as they like, but call an opponent “camelfucker” and you are going to jail–because that is racist, you see. The thinking is that you cannot tolerate the thin end of the wedge in any kind of public setting, because next thing you know fringe lunatics will be killing camels and sissies.

The influence of Jewish money in western society is not always benign–and this should be discussed–but when the Overton window for political rhetoric gets ratcheted up, the roaches come out of the woodwork, or the attic in the case of Dylann Storm Roof, and start killing innocent people, unmindful of the fact that shooting people in synagogues and churches does not really address the crimes of powerful global entities like Goldman Sachs and other Wall Street predators who buy up legislators by the truckload.
