It’s a shame Jews are so retiring and humble. It must inhibit their success.

WASHINGTON (CBS DC) – Shifts in the world’s major religions will see Islam growing faster than any other faith, with the number of Muslims nearly equaling that of Christians by 2050.
A new Pew Research Center study finds that with the exception of Buddhists, the world’s major religions will all see an increase in numbers by 2050, although some will make up a smaller percentage from today. Muslims are the only major religious group projected to increase faster than the world’s population as a whole.
Over the coming four decades, Christianity will remain the world’s largest religious affiliation, but Islam will see a major increase that will make the two religions nearly equal in numbers by 2050. In 2010, Christianity was by far the world’s largest religion, with 2.2 billion followers of the faith and composing nearly one-third (31 percent) of the Earth’s 6.9 billion people. Islam was second, with 1.6 billion adherents, or 23 percent of the world’s population.
If current fertility rates and youth populations continue to grow at their current rate, Muslims will make up 10 percent of Europe’s overall population by 2050. Islam is expected to nearly match Christianity in the coming four decades as a result of a “comparatively youthful” population with high fertility rates.

Married Men Work Harder & Smarter

Chaim Amalek writes:

This is a great article, one that should be required reading in High School: Men who are reluctant to settle down until they make more money – and women who spurn low-wage men – could benefit from what Taulbee has discovered: Marriage has a transformative effect on adult behavior, emotional health, and financial well-being—particularly for men. (Parenthood is more transformative for women.)

Men who get married work harder and more strategically, and earn more money than their single peers from similar backgrounds. Marriage also transforms men’s social worlds; they spend less time with friends and more time with family; they also go to bars less and to church more. In the provocative words of Nobel Laureate George Akerlof, men “settle down when they get married; if they fail to get married they fail to settle down.”

Assimilating the lessons of this article is 1,000,000,000 ^ 1,000,000,000 more important than doing well in any video game.

The Washington Post reports:

In the provocative words of Nobel Laureate George Akerlof, men “settle down when they get married; if they fail to get married they fail to settle down.”

Research findings on heterosexual marriage are surprisingly consistent with Akerlof’s insight, especially when it comes to engaging the world of work.

Our research, featured in a recent report, “For Richer, For Poorer: How Family Structures Economic Success in America,” indicates that men who are married work about 400 hours more per year than their single peers with equivalent backgrounds. They also work more strategically: one Harvard study found that married men were much less likely than their single peers to quit their current job unless they had lined up another job.

This translates into a substantial marriage premium for men. On average, young married men, aged 28-30, make $15,900 more than their single peers, and married men aged 44-46 make $18,800 more than their single peers.

That’s even after controlling for differences in education, race, ethnicity, regional unemployment, and scores on a test of general knowledge. What’s more: the marriage premium operates for black, Hispanic, and less-educated men in much the same way as it does for men in general.

WP: Jerry Brown battles Calif. water crisis created by his father, Gov. Pat Brown

According to the Washington Post, California’s problem is that it has had too much water provided for it by its infrastructure. California has to learn to use less water. There’s not a word in here about investing in more infrastructure to secure more water.

I can’t take an enjoyable shower any more because the new shower heads reduce water pressure to a drizzle. It takes a long time to fill up a glass of water because the new tap heads reduce water flow. If California had no illegal immigrants, we would not need to ration water.

Chaim Amalek writes: “I keep thinking that there has to be a tipping point, a time when the accretion of lies our elites tell becomes so high and unstable that the whole thing comes crashing down on them. But it just never happens. At least not yet.”

WP: This philosophy — unlimited water for every Californian at any price — was behind Pat Brown’s massive mid-century push for water projects in the Golden State. And it’s a legacy his son, who just announced California’s first mandatory water restrictions, must endure.

“It’s a different world,” Jerry Brown said, standing in a dry stretch of the Sierra Nevadas typically under snowpack at this time of year. “We have to act differently. … The idea of your nice little green grass getting lots of water every day, that’s going to be a thing of the past.”

It’s hard to imagine a worldview more at odds with that of the current governor’s father, who ran California from 1959 to 1967 and died in 1996. Pat Brown was a water evangelist — an apostle of irrigation who exploited agribusiness’s unquenchable thirst for political gain but also sort of seemed to believe the rhetoric he bought into. He threw his weight behind funding for the California Water Project, a $1.8 billion initiative that today brings water to 25 million Californians and 750,000 acres of irrigated farmland. The project brought water from Northern California, where 80 percent of the state’s precipitation is, to Southern California, where 80 percent of its demand is.

LAT: Literacy gap between Latino and white toddlers starts early, study shows

From the Los Angeles Times:

tino toddlers whose language comprehension is roughly similar to white peers at 9 months old fall significantly behind by the time they are 2, according to a study released Thursday.

The UC Berkeley study found that four-fifths of the nation’s Mexican American toddlers lagged three to five months behind whites in preliteracy skills, oral language and familiarity with print materials.

Gee, I wonder if Latinos in America have average IQs about 90 as compared to whites with 100 and east asians with 105 and Ashkenazi Jews with 110?

It’s important to invest in the coming Latino majority.

Let’s Talk About Race

Robert Weissberg writes: Good news: Starbucks customers need not worry that some barista will try to engage you in an honest discussion about American race relations. The whole idea was laughed off the stage and rightly so. One comic suggested that he’d prefer to talk about free will versus determinism with the folks down at Jiffy Lube.

Unfortunately, calls for such honest, forthright and frank dialogues are irrepressible. Recall Attorney General Eric Holder’s 2009 exhortation for a national conversation. Noah C. Rothman recently offered a catalogue of such calls in his February 2015 Commentary essay. The New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristoff suggested “a new commission [that] could jump-start an overdue national conversation.” Similarly, Peniel Joseph of Tufts University called events at Ferguson a “teachable moment that could lead to a National Dialogue on Race Day.” The journalist Troy Singleton opined that “Shying away from this difficult conversation will lead only to more incidents like Ferguson and its painful aftermath.” President Obama invited a “sustained” conversation on race “to move forward in a constructive fashion.” And on and on and on.

But, admonitions aside, let me try and finally eradicate this zombie-like idea. Trigger Warning: killing the very idea that a little talk, and yet more chatter can actually solve a deeply rooted problem that has persisted for centuries will not be a pleasant sight to behold. Those made uncomfortable by genuine honesty are advised to leave the room or, if determined to have a “meaningful dialogue on matters of consequence,” visit Jiffy Lube and seek intellectual enlightenment there.

Let’s start simple. Airing out differences on emotionally laden subjects (and yakking about race guarantees high blood pressure) is not always advisable. Actually, lots of harm can happen from ill-advised frankness. Those in happy marriage know that it would be unwise to turn their 25th wedding anniversary into a two hour tête-à-tête about each other’s annoying personal hygiene habits or spousal sexual ineptitude.

A frank discussion about race relations would be far worse. I can readily see a white person working himself up into a lather when recounting the sky-high black crime rate, the awful academic performance of blacks despite trillions in government help, the relative level of dependence on government handouts and the absolute lack of any gratitude for this assistance. To which an agitated black would respond with a similarly lengthy catalogue: the legacy of slavery and discrimination, innumerable incidents of police brutality, white denial of their pernicious racism and related sins that undermine black self-respect. And this would be only round one of a 15 round championship fight.

That every one of these items has been discussed ad nauseam for half a century suggests that the purpose of this dialogue is not to provide new information or to clear the air as one might spit out a spouse’s long annoying faulty hygiene in couples therapy. Nor could it be argued that contemporary Americans need a refresher course on race — almost every item in these prospective conversations spontaneously surfaces with once-a-month regularity thanks to the mass media’s infatuation with racially charged white-on-black violence (but not the reverse).

Why then the repeated calls and the unwillingness of whites to engage African Americans? Here’s why: nearly all whites (and many Asians, too) know that the invitation is a trap, a disguised ploy to advance the racial egalitarian agenda. An opportunity to advance racial progress is just the bait. Remember Chairman Mao’s a thousand flowers to bloom campaign. This was a 1956 plan to encourage ordinary Chinese to openly criticize the Communist regime so as to promote progress in the arts and sciences. Alas, in 1957 policy was reversed and those who had expressed criticisms were rounded up, sent to prison camps or executed. “Freedom to speak” was a subterfuge from the get-go. Mao called it “enticing the snakes out of their caves.” Closer to home, one wag whose name I cannot recall, nailed it perfectly: “We need an honest conversation so we know who to fire.”

Racist Comments Unmake Yahoo

Chris Lehman, Yahoo’s former news director, writes: Second, by far the most vocal Yahoo commenters were the most dogmatically racist; we’d joke grimly that a Yahoo commenter certificate had to be a complimentary gift to every newly enrolled member of the Klan. Seasoned front-page programmers knew that anytime we published anything touching on race relations in America, the first order of business was to disable comments on the post before it went live. Likewise, the mood among front-page programmers never got more frantic than on the occasions when we managed to push out a post that even mildly challenged the Confederate mindset with the comments still enabled.

To make matters worse, since topical reasoning was not the strong suit of this energized commentariat, its members would occasionally descend on a completely unrelated post en masse and smear it with thousands of imbecilic racist outbursts. On one unfortunate occasion, this happened to one of our posts, and before we could reverse engineer our way out of the hate-fest, the CMS system seized up; we couldn’t shut off the comments, and we couldn’t delete the post. For weeks on end, it just sat there, oozing ugly misspelled racist obscenities and brutally mocking the high-flown civic conceits of let’s-put-on-a-show digital interactivity.

WP: Atlanta teen who received controversial heart transplant dies in chase with police

It is important that we provide new hearts to criminals in need. Seems like a good use of a couple of million dollars so a bloke can break into more homes.

Chaim Amalek writes: “What sick ways you have of thinking about the rest of the world! Were you still living in your Father’s House, eating at his table and praying to his Savior, I’ve no doubt you would not be dabbling with all of this hateful white supremecism of late. If ever there was a man the love of Jesus could save from hatred, it is you, Luke. I think that tomorrow, Maundy Thursday, would be a good day for you to start getting back in right with the Lord.”

REPORT: In 2013, then-15-year-old Anthony Stokes was dying and desperately needed a heart transplant that he couldn’t get because, according to doctors, he had “a history of noncompliance.”

Stokes’s family suspected that his low grades and a history of trouble with the law gave doctors reason to believe that he would not be willing to take his medicine or show up at subsequent doctor’s visits. The Georgia teen’s story story sparked outrage, and the hospital quickly reversed its decision, giving him priority on the transplant list.

But two years later, after he received a transplant, Stokes’s “second chance” has come to an abrupt end.

Tuesday afternoon, Stokes died after a vehicle he was driving jumped a curb, hit a pedestrian and collided with a pole in a car chase with police, according to WSBTV.

The pedestrian was hospitalized for her injuries, and Stokes’s car was nearly split in half by the sign, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Police said he had to be cut out of the Honda by first responders and rushed to a hospital, where he later died.

“He lost control and there was a long set of skid marks,” Roswell Police Department spokeswoman Lisa Holland told WXIA.

According to Holland, Stokes was driving a car that matched the description of one used by a person suspected of breaking into an elderly woman’s home. The chase began after officers responding to her 911 call attempted to pull Stokes over, according to WXIA…

It is unclear what exactly caused doctors to change their assessment of Stokes two years ago, but he told WSBTV that he viewed the opportunity as a chance to start over.

The transplant allowed him to “live a second chance. Get a second chance and do things I want to do,” he said.

America & Race

Paul Johnson writes in Modern Times:

The notion of a fusion of races in America was as old as Hector Crevecoeur and Thomas Jefferson. It was dramatized with sensational effect in Israel Zangwill’s play The Melting-pot, which was the New York hit of 1908. The new motion-picture industry, which was from its inception the epitome of multi-racialism, was obsessed by the idea, as many of its early epics testify. But with what proportions of ingredients should the pot be filled? By the time of the Great War, unrestricted immigration already appeared a lost cause. In 1915 an itinerant Georgian minister, William Simmons, founded the Ku Klux Klan as an organization to control minority groups which it identified with moral and political nonconformity. Its aims were powerfully assisted by the publication, the following year, of Madison Grant’s presentation, in an American context, of European ‘master-race’ theory, The Passing of the Great Race, This quasi-scientific best-seller argued that America, by unrestricted immigration, had already nearly ‘succeeded in destroying the privilege of birth; that is, the intellectual and moral advantages a man of good stock brings into the world with him’. The result of the ‘melting-pot’, he argued, could be seen in Mexico, where ‘the absorption of the blood of the original Spanish conquerors by the native Indian
population’ had produced a degenerate mixture ‘now engaged in demonstrating its incapacity for self-government’. The virtues of the ‘higher races’ were ‘highly unstable’ and easily disappeared ‘when mixed with generalized or primitive characters’. Thus ‘the cross between a white man and a Negro is a Negro’ and ‘the cross between any of the three European races and a Jew is a Jew’.

This fear of ‘degeneration’ was used by Hiram Wesley Evans, a Dallas dentist and most effective of the Klan leaders, to build it up into a movement of Anglo-Saxon supremacist culture which at one time had a reputed 4 million members in the East and Midwest. Evans, who called himself ‘the most average man in America’, asserted that the Klan spoke ‘for the great mass of Americans of the old pioneer stock … of the so-called Nordic race which, with all its faults, has given the world almost the whole of modern civilization’. A racial pecking-order was almost universally accepted in political campaigning, though with significant variations to account for local voting-blocks. Thus, Senator Henry Cabot Lodge, in private an unqualified Anglo-Saxon supremacist, always used the prudent code-term ‘the English-speaking people’ when campaigning. Will Hays, campaign manager for Warren Harding, comprehensively summed up the candidate’s lineage as ‘the finest pioneer blood, Anglo-Saxon, German, Scotch-Irish and Dutch’.

America’s entry into the Great War gave an enormous impetus to a patriotic xenophobia which became a justification for varieties of racism and a drive against nonconformity…

A more permanent consequence was the 1921 Quota law which limited immigration in any year to 3 per cent of the number of each nationality in the USA according to the census of 1910. This device, whose object was to freeze the racial balance as far as possible, was greatly tightened by the Johnson-Reed Act of 1924, which limited the quota to 2 per cent of any nationality residing in the USA in 1890. It debarred Japanese altogether (though Canadians and Mexicans were exempt) and not only cut the earlier quota but deliberately favoured Northern and Western Europe at the expense of Eastern and Southern Europe. With a further twist of the screw in 1929, based on racial analysis of the USA population in the 1920s, the legislation of the 1920s brought mass immigration to America to an end. Arcadia was full, its drawbridge up, its composition now determined and to be perpetuated….

There was an important point here: America, if it was anything, was a Protestant-type religious civilization…

In fact the East Coast highbrows were by no means helpless. Over the next sixty years they were to exercise an influence on American (and world) policy out of all proportion to their numbers and intrinsic worth. But they were ambivalent about America. In the spring of 1917, Van Wyck Brooks wrote in Seven Arts, the journal he helped to found, ‘Towards a National Culture’, in which he argued that hitherto America had taken the ‘best’ of other cultures: now it must create its own through the elementary experience of living which alone produced true culture. America, by experiencing its own dramas, through what he termed ‘the Culture of Industrialism’, would ‘cease to be a blind, selfish, disorderly people; we shall become a luminous people, dwelling in the light and sharing our light’. 11 He endorsed his friend Randolph Bourne’s view that the whole ‘melting-pot’ theory was unsound since it turned immigrants into imitation Anglo-Saxons, and argued that America ought to have not narrow European nationalism but ‘the more adventurous ideal’ of cosmopolitanism, to become ‘the first international nation’. 12 But what did this mean? D.H. Lawrence rightly observed that America was not, or not yet, ‘a blood-homeland’. Jung, putting it another way, said Americans were ‘not yet at home in their unconscious’. Brooks, deliberately settling into Westport, Connecticut, to find his American cosmopolitanism, together with other Twenties intellectuals whom he neatly defined as ‘those who care more for the state of their minds than the state of their fortunes’, nevertheless felt the strong pull of the old culture; he confessed, in his autobiography, to ‘a frequently acute homesickness for the European scene’. Only ‘a long immersion in American life’, he wrote, ‘was to cure me completely of any lingering fear of expatriation; but this ambivalence characterized my outlook in the Twenties.’ 13 In May 1919, hearing that a friend, Waldo Frank, planned to settle in the Middle West, he wrote to him: ‘All our will-to-live as writers comes to us, or rather stays with us, through our intercourse with Europe. Never believe people who talk to you about the west, Waldo; never forget that it is we New Yorkers and New Englanders who have the monopoly of whatever oxygen there is in the American continent.’

Can I demand that a Jewish baker make me a Hitler cake?

How is that different from demanding that religious people serve your big fat gay wedding?

Chaim Amalek writes: “I want some gay goy to demand a Hasid in Borough Park bake him a wedding cake. Just to watch our politicians and journalists hide.”

Ace of Spades writes: The zealots are not claiming that we must be tolerant towards all — that is a principle most could agree with.

No, they are instead claiming we must embrace the things they love, and hate — and persecute — the things they hate.

This is not “tolerance.” This is, at best, simply the replacement of one set of bigotries and hatreds with the
left’s favored set of bigotries and hatreds.

This WSJ is worth a read, though it gets, I think, pretty deceptive in its middle part. The WSJ says that opponents of Indiana’s RFRA law “claim” that the law would “empower” florists and wedding photographers to “discriminate” against gay weddings.

That’s not the claim, Old Bean. That’s the entire point.

And it signals how lost this issue is when not even the defenders of the RFRA can even admit the law’s purpose. They seem compelled to pretend this bit about refusing service to gay weddings is just some hypothetical crazy talk.

It’s not. It’s the whole point. And we should not be afraid to say so.

I don’t disagree with those who refuse to serve gay weddings, and I don’t necessarily agree with them, either. I don’t have to. That is the point of tolerance — not that I either disagree or agree with someone’s decision or someone’s self-expression, but that I support his rights to decide for himself, and express himself, as he sees fit.

My agreement with his decisions or speech — my disgust with it — my sympathies for it — my hatred of it — irrelevant, because I am not weighing in on the speech or decision itself — merely whether I believe an American has a right to so speak or so decide.

And on that matter, I most emphatically do support their right to decide or speak as they would.

Stand Up To Bigotry!

We need to act more quickly on Hate Speech. The sooner we mitigate the First Amendment with laws against Hate Speech, the sooner we can get rid of criticism of Jews through “unintended consequences” of their implementation. We probably won’t be able to as easily put guys like Steve Sailer in jail or even shut them down like we will Daily Stormer and Stormfront, but we don’t need to. We will certainly be able to tie them up in time-consuming government lawsuits. Our side will be paid for by the government in cost and labor. Their side will be paid for by scarce private resources. And think of the chilling effect! The important thing about Hate Speech laws is that it frames the conversation properly. It isn’t whether or not something is true, but rather, whether it is “hate;” whether it is legal.

This free speech thing was tolerable most of the time I guess before the internet, but we just can’t justify it in the internet age. Not passing Hate Crimes laws is in fact ignoring the problem, and it is irresponsible from a communal position.

From the ADL:

In honor of our Centennial Year in 2013, the Anti-Defamation League launched the “Imagine a World Without Hate” video and action campaign, and we invite you to participate.

Take just 80 seconds of your time to watch this powerful video, which imagines a world without racism, homophobia or anti-Semitism — a world in which the hate violence that took the lives of Martin Luther King Jr., Anne Frank, Daniel Pearl, Matthew Shepard and others did not happen. Imagine what these individuals could have continued to contribute to society if bigotry, hate and extremism had not cut their lives tragically short.

After 100 years of fighting bigotry and fostering respect, we are celebrating our successes, while at the same time recognizing that we still have a long way to go to achieve the reality of a world without hate. Join us by watching, sharing and taking steps every day to create a world without hate. Thank you for stepping up to create a world without hate as an individual, community, school or corporation.
