All The Mayor’s Women

Tony Castro blogs:

Five months ago, Jan. 16 to be exact, I was at one of Antonio’s news conferences in North Hollywood, standing a couple of feet to his left when I noticed that he wasn’t wearing his gold wedding band. Antonio and I had compared our relatively similar wedding rings during a Starbucks meeting in 2003, so I knew he wore one — even though some paper I mentioned his to weren’t so sure.
I then did an extensive search through photos in Getty Images and WireImage as well as the Daily News’ own photo files. What I learned was that sometime around Labor Day of last year Antonio had stopped wearing his wedding band. There were no photographs of him after that time in which he was wearing the ring. I also learned that he and Corina had not been seen in public since las summer’s visit from the former president of Mexico.
Then there was the Hollywood Christmas Parade. In 2005 Antonio had been the grand marshal, appearing with Corina and the kids. Last December Antonio and the kids attended the parade without Corina.
There was also strong evidence that Corina had never moved into Getty House with Antonio and the kids and that she had continued to quietly reside at their Mount Washington home where she was often spotted.
What happened next was baffling and Keystone Cops-like.
My popularity with Antonio and the Villaraigosa press office at an all-time low after last November’s "The Man/The Myth" deconstruction of the Clinton-like yarn Antonio has developed about his childhood and growing up period, it was thought best if someone else popped the question about "where’s your wedding ring?"
It was a disaster. The Villaraigosa people suspected it was me digging into the mayor’s personal life and relaunched their campaign to discredit me.
A long piece I was preparing on the Villaraigosa marriage hit gridlock.
Enter Luke Ford.
Just coincidentally, Luke had all the same information I had dug up and posted it on his website.
The Villaraigosa office then countered with that absurd denial at Getty House where the mayor couldn’t even cajole Corina to even make an appearance, but getting the Times to suck up and report that it was all untrue, conceding only that Antonio and Corina were going through typical strains in the 20-year-marriage.
Last week, I’m told the powers that be behind the mayor called my powers that be shortly before the separation announcement, kissing up and apologizing for their hit campaign against the paper and me. Yeah. All the mayor’s men and women.

My Vivid Dreams

For the past week, every morning around 6 a.m., I have vivid dreams.

Today was no exception.

I dreamed I was on a Jewish Young Adults trip to New York. There was a nude day trip available. I took it. A group of us swam nude up this river and then when we came to the bank, we were given this 20 page survey to fill out. I gave up on it after a couple of pages and woke up annoyed.

Pick One People, One Religion

Jack Werthheimer (provost of Jewish Theological Seminary) writes on Jewcy.com:

Pick a single religion and a single people. It will save you much grief. I hope the religion you choose is Judaism and the people with a claim on you is the Jewish people. Your wish to create a Jewish identity mixing multiple religious traditions is a fantasy, and you know it because of the very ways you think about yourselves—“FrankenJews,” “mongrelized” are terms you employ to describe your fractured selves.

No authentic Judaism can be built on the religious syncretism you demand. And no concept of Jewish peoplehood ought to be capacious enough to approve of the premise that Jewishness has merely a vote but not a veto, a phrase, by the way, coined by Mordecai Kaplan and the Reconstructionists in reference to Halakha, but not accepted by the Conservative movement.

So to answer your two questions directly: “Has America annihilated Jewish peoplehood?” It has eroded the willingness of a significant sector of your generation to take responsibility for fellow Jews.

LAO: Mayor Takes Blame For Split

Kevin Roderick writes on LAObserved.com:

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa knows how to draw a crowd. His news conference this morning to discuss his marriage was reportedly packed. "I take responsibility for what is happening and I feel a personal sense of failure about it," he said. "And that’s all I’m prepared to say." He turned away questions about an affair while he was mayor, responding "Those kinds of questions are inappropriate. It’s a matter between me and my family." He called his wife Corina an "exceptional human being in every sense of the word." Villaraigosa’s two oldest daughters from a previous relationship — Marisela Villar and Prisila Villar-Contreras — attended, as did his brother Rob Delgado, sister Deborah Villar, and her son, Aaron Monarrez. Corina and the couple’s two teenage children — Antonio Jr. and Natalia Fe — did not attend. Here’s a photo from happier times for both the mayor and another local news figure. West Hollywood Gay Pride Parade Sunday

Video Video Video Video Video Video Video Video Bernard Parks Video Gloria Allred

Sunday was my first gay pride parade. I still don’t know what to think. I guess I’m disturbed that I wasn’t more disturbed.

My days as a twink are truly over because nobody in this crowd of sodomites made a pass at me.

Rabbi Steven Weil Loses His Patience

Second day Shuvuot. Rabbi Steven Weil of Beth Jacob, not the shy retiring type, lost patience with Jay Braun who is a great baal koreh (leader of prayer) but a little too into his own singing.

Even at a good clip, davening takes many hours on a Jewish holiday and some less spiritual types than myself like to get it over and done with so they can go home to eat, sleep and make merry with their wives and children.

I don’t know why this type of lashon hara must spread around the community. I am only blogging about it so that we can get this issue out into the open, disinfect it with the sunshine of publicity, and then proceed as if it never happened.

Word.

Lou posts:

Your facts are off, Luke.

Weil was just trying to get the larger-than-normal Yizkor-enhanced crowd quieted down. His comments did lead to a discussion with Braun later on, but I saw the two of them laughing it up at kiddush last shabbos, so it couldn’t have been such a big deal.

If Weil’s comments implied some loss of patience, it was not with Braun, but with the men’s choir — or, more correctly, the whole package. On most occasions, Braun’s davening manages to be no-frills and high-quality at the same time. On this particular occasion, Braun was conducting Musaf with the choir, with whom he has never, to my knowledge, led services. Quite an achievement for a bunch of volunteers who had not even practiced together.

You’re about three weeks late with this “scoop”, and by now you should have, in your own words, proceeded as if it never happened. If continue to disparage a rabbi who works 24×7, or a baal koreh who leins almost flawlessly week-in, week-out for no pay, you will lose credibility when you have something truly newsworthy to report.

Nobody Deserves The Cathy Seipp Award For Courageous Writing More Than Her Nemesis Nikki Finke

A group of Cathy’s best writer friends met for dinner at Rob Long’s home Sunday evening.

After we ate, Rob and Sandra Tsing Loh gathered us (Jill Stewart, Anne Thompson, Luke Thompson, Debbie Gendel, Kate Coe, Moxie, Ruth Shalit and hubby Rob Barrett, Amy Alkon, Mr and Mrs Tim Cavanaugh, Roman Genn) in the living room and we each said a few words about Miss Seipp. Listen here.

My recording missed the first five minutes of introduction by Rob and Sandra.

One freelancer said Cathy was a model of courage who near the end of her life encouraged her to trash Amy Wilentz‘s new book on California even though Amy’s husband Nick Goldberg was the Op/ED Editor of The Los Angeles Times.

I never knew Tim Cavanaugh was an Orthodox Jew. If he technically is not one, then he certainly breeds like one.

Debbie Gendel remembers: "I was inside The Times and Cathy was always revealing things I had said to her… We had a shared disappointment in the promise of this urbane society where everybody would be so witty and everyone was so square…and that’s why we made fun of them."

Rob Long: "I saw her on the Friday before she died and she was still giving me s— about living on the West Side."

Jill Stewart: "She was an insecure writer. I remember her calling me up [circa 2003] and asking how come Allan Mayer was always asking me out to lunch and he never asked her out…"

"We were too embarrassed to ask Allan why he kept asking me out to lunch so we never found out."

One bloke at the Times: "We’re always testing the editorial hierarchy at The L.A. times on the web."

There was a vigorous discussion at The Times about putting Cathy’s death on the front page. She did end up there online.

Ross Johnson: "At the time Cathy was diagnosed with cancer [May 2002], I was going through a severe clinical depression… She said, ‘Find someone really insane to write about and no one will even notice.’"

Ross did, taking on the Anita BuschAnthony Pellicano story.

Anne Thompson: "Cathy taught me about blogging. I took it up late and it ended up being the most fun, the most gratifying thing in my career."

I shared that I remember two of Cathy’s favorite sayings were, "That’s stupid!" and "You know I’m f—ing right!"

Gary McVey (American Cinema Foundation) remembers when Cathy said to him, "I can’t decide whether you are a master of euphemism or you’re just dishonest."

We remember when Gary’s ACF had to bring in security to calm down Mickey Kaus’s worries that the presence of Little Green Footballs webmaster Charles Johnson would trigger attacks. Cathy was ridiculously proud that she figured out the plainsclothed security guy (who stood about 6’10").

Cathy’s father Harvey lives in Cathy’s house. "I still feel like she’s there…in the backyard and upstairs, sitting in her lawn chair, laughing, talking to her friends."

"As I read her articles, I wish that I could’ve discussed them with her."

"Her dog Linda survives and gets confused… I hear the dog talking to her. One day I was talking with Maia and the dog was staring at Cathy’s chair. We went in and I got the feeling that there was something paranormal there. I think Cathy would’ve been very skeptical of that."

"I’m carrying a little book now called ‘Why God permits evil and how to rise above it,’ [by some guy with a Buddhist-sounding name]… I find some relief in it. There’s magic there, which I don’t think Cathy would’ve liked. Somehow I’m not willing to give up on her."

Ross: "Harvey, I want to thank you. You passed on the gift of honesty."

"Cathy was the most honest woman I ever met."

Sandra Tsing Loh: "That makes me think of Luke. You wrote on your blog that you and Cathy were like a married couple. You weren’t like a married couple. You would say things to each other, and I’d go, I can’t believe they said that, and then you’d have a snack and be friends. I was amazed. Your relationship was amazing."

Moxie wears a dress with the color of Cathy’s blog. "She was a big rescuer of animals and strays…"

Moxie gives me the look.

Rob Long says Cathy should’ve smoked and he imitates the forceful Bette Davis way she could’ve snubbed out a cigarette while writing.

I remember Cathy as the most competitive woman I’ve ever met.

Cathy’s daughter Maia Lazar remembers that her final discussion with her mother was an argument.

The LAPressClub.org has hosted some wild times but none were more poignant than the 1999 awards when the elderly and drunk cartoonist Paul Conrad, while everyone was turning to pay tribute to Robert Scheer, reached over and, in front of his wife and in front of Matt Welch, grabbed Emmanuelle Richard’s succulent ass.

Word.

While I can’t promise that this will happen to you, I can promise that it will not happen to you if you don’t buy a ticket.

Bring the whole family ’cause Paul Conrad’s sober these days and less likely to play grab ass under the table.

Sacha Baron Cohen With Pregnant Fiance Isla Fisher

Shot Sunday afternoon, June 10, on Santa Monica Blvd near San Vicente at West Hollywoods gay pride parade. Click here. Stills Stills Stills Stills Stills Stills

According to this Wikipedia entry, Isla Fisher has converted to Orthodox Judaism in advance of her marriage to Sacha.

Was her conversion truly kosher? She doesn’t look Orthodox in many photos and movies.

UPDATE JAN. 2009:

Check out Jewssip!

Here is its entry on Sacha Baron Cohen’s fiance — the convert to Judaism Isla Fisher:

Isla Fisher isn’t exactly a Jewbie –  she converted almost two years ago!!    This makes a lot more sense because if she hadn’t than little Olive wouldn’t be a yid and I’m sure Sacha Baron Cohen’s mama would be inconsolable.  Jewssip’s so glad that everything is in order, but come on already, when’s the wedding?  We could be dead before we see Isla walk down the aisle, even though she promises in February’s Allure that the day is in the works.

“We are going to get married, really, really, even more now than ever.
“We have been talking about it and we have been very close, but it has been difficult to plan.
“It is very important to me to have a beautiful ritual celebrated with all my family and friends and to feel part of a community.
“And when you are in the public eye, to keep that private and to make it happen without it being really visible is really difficult.”

I feel like she’s only teasing us with this wedding talk to get us all excited for Confessions of a Shopaholic, her new movie.  I know a faker when I hear it – I use the same lines on my Bubbie.

Feeding Drugs To Kids

I caught this in a Pico-Robertson shul bulletin on Shabbos:

Last week, two men posing as DWP workers committed several robberies…

We also received an alert from Jewish Family Service Aleinu Family Resource Center that a man who goes by the name Shmuel Yaakov has been circulating in the Hancock Park area and has given at least one child drugs in an alley behind a shul, possibly passing it off as candy. This man is in his 50s, of average height, with a black-greyish beard and Sephardic features.

Grateful Ed at the Happy Minyan decided that the shul’s singles should sponsor this week’s kiddush. None of them ponied up. Typical of us singles, usually taking but rarely giving.

Back in 2001, I co-sponsored a Happy Minyan kiddush ($300) but never got to enjoy it because Rabbi Steven Weil kicked me out of Beth Jacob.
