My Christian Evangelist Friend Heather Veitch Divorcing

That’s a big no-no in the Christian religion. Heather’s (her myspace) lost most of her Christian friends over it. She’s still ministering to sex workers and she has a Jewish boyfriend.

I call her Wednesday afternoon.

The last time we spoke was the week when ABC Primetime ran its March 13 special on porn stars Sunny Lane and Sophia Lynn. Heather was shown counseling Sophia.

I tell Heather that Sophia is back in porn.

Heather: "She never said it was never a possibility for her to return to it. She said it was her desire to leave it but she said that if she like she had to, she would go back."

"I haven’t talked to her in a while."

"I always hope the girls are gonna be happy but I’m never going to shun them for any choices they make."

"I’m getting a divorce. You know my husband has brain cancer. It causes a lot of problems. It just got too much for me. I’ve pretty much lost all my friends. I still have a church here in Vegas that still supports me. They know the whole story."

"I barely have any real friends now."

"I’ve laid low for six months. We’re selling our house. We’ve been separated for six months."

Heather has custody of the two kids. "Everything is civil. We’re still good friends. We have the documentary coming out. We had professional Christian counselors come in from Alaska. They said, ‘You guys have to separate.’"

Luke: "I thought he was terminally ill?"

Heather: "He is. It’s weird. His last brain scan was showing good but he’s had five brain surgeries. His cancer is considered very terminal but for some reason he’s doing really well.

"He’s with his parents. They’re taking care of him. He has a girlfriend. He’s really happy with his girlfriend. She’s really nice."

Luke: "Is she a hairdresser too?"

Heather: "No. She’s deaf. I think it works out because he’s disabled and she’s disabled. He can’t think well and her being deaf, she doesn’t pick up on it. He can’t sign but she can read lips."

"Our home wasn’t a happy home. It wasn’t a healthy home. When you have mental health stuff going on, it makes life unstable 24/7. Now everything’s stable. We’re on a schedule."

"I love him like a caretaker loves a child. It’s really hard that I can’t take care of him anymore because that’s the kind of love that I have for him. It hasn’t been a husband-wife love in six years. It’s really hard having him out there on his own. I really prayed that God would send someone to take care of him the way he deserves."

They were together ten years and had one child together. Five years in, he got a recurrence of his brain cancer.

Heather: "We had a rollercoaster relationship. I’ll never regret it."

"I’m proud of myself for sticking by him and fighting for proton therapy and giving my all for so long to keep him alive."

"I took a huge break from the ministry to get my family in order."

"Any Christian that finds out [about the divorce] says, ‘Quit your ministry, go do hair, and don’t do this anymore.’"

"All of them are like, ‘You’re evil.’ I’ve had pastors I was close to make me feel like I have a guaranteed ticket to hell now. Even though I go around preaching about God’s grace and forgiveness.

"It’s been tough. All these people I respect calling me out like I was Satan."

"I wouldn’t say I’ve been kicked out of my ministry but I’m now on the outs."

"My husband and I haven’t been man-and-wife for six years. I’ve been really struggling for two years. Like drowning. I kept thinking that if I changed my environment [they moved to Las Vegas last September] it might get better, but you can’t heal something that’s missing. A huge amount of his brain is missing. It’s changed his personality."

"The [Riverside] church (Sandals) wanted me just to separate and never date again and never have a male friend and never remarry. And if I did, they would let everybody know that they were no longer supporting me.

"Because I’m not a liar, I said, ‘I’m sorry. I’m gonna date. I’m want to remarry.’ That to me is what’s important in life — sharing my life with somebody.

"A lot of Christians would’ve just lied, because how would they know what I’m doing out here in Vegas?"

"Do you know who knew and kept it on the downlow? JimmyD. See, you can trust a pornographer before you can trust a pastor. I’ve learned this. I’ve had pastors lie about me."

"Stephen Baldwin is still behind me. VH1 didn’t pick up his reality show."

Luke: "How do your boyfriend’s [he’s three years younger than Heather] Jewish family relate to you?"

Heather: "At first, he just tried to make it like I just help other women. Then he slowly breaks it to them that I’m helping women in pornography. That I go to porn conventions. At first, they were like, ‘No way you can be with her.’ When they met me in person, they were so sweet. ‘You need to marry her and have babies.’

"I can’t imagine being like him. Being bar mitzvahed and all this stuff and now… You can imagine how he would feel telling his Jewish parents that he’s got a Christian evangelist to the sex industry who used to be in the sex industry. Not what most Jewish parents would like to hear. But they love me."

Luke: "Have you lost any friends at your new church?"

Heather: "No, but I’m afraid to make them because I came into the church going through this. I’m afraid to make them because I see how conditional my friends can be according to my lifestyle.

"It’s one more lesson. That’s why if you call me and tell me Sophia Lynn is in porn, I will never turn my back on Sophia Lynn. Say I got back with my husband and I got back on track in their eyes, I still would know that they are not my friends. I would never do that to those girls. That’s now what life’s about. It’s not what God’s about. God doesn’t say to shun people when they’re at their worst…because now they’re just going to spiral down."

"I can’t imagine what it would be like if I had nobody who was Christian behind me. That would create a real spiral. I did go through a time of questioning God. With my marriage and the way that my husband’s brain rotted in front of my face, and that I couldn’t do anything about it and no prayers fixed it and the problems we were going through were unfixable, I questioned God over and over. Why would you allow this to happen in my marriage?

"When the solution was separate and never marry and never date, don’t have any boyfriends, live by yourself until he passes away, that shook my face up. My spiritual advisors were telling me this is how I was to live forever.

"Then I felt that God was there for me by putting [certain Christians] there. They told me that you live in a fallen world where disease and things can happen that are unfair. You don’t live in a Garden of Eden. Because of sin, things happen but I don’t have to be shamed forever."

"My mentor went through a divorce and the same thing happened to her where everybody said, ‘You’re going to hell. That’s it. We’re done with you.’ And she’s a pastor now."

"God provided people to guide me."

"I would walk into my meetings crying, saying, ‘Please everybody, pray for me that I don’t get a divorce. I can’t take it.’ Everybody would pray and try to say something nice and shut me up so everything would look good. But Annie [an ex-hooker now turned on by Christ] acknowledged that things were not OK. She stuck by me."

"I know God is not done with me. I’m just hanging in there."

Ken Layne Interviews Mike Davis

MayorSam reports:

Los Angeles’ first blogger interviews Los Angeles’ first dystopian writer.

In the debut issue of New Angeles (a downtown/eastside monthly), Ken Layne interviews Mike Davis—author of some of my faves, including City of Quartz and Ecology of Fear—on the eastside renaissance, smart growth, and the Grand Avenue project.

The Theresa Duncan Tragedy

Kate Coe writes the definitive piece:

IN 2001, THERESA DUNCAN was on top of the world. She had a two-picture deal with Fox Searchlight, and came to Los Angeles confident in her ability to conquer Hollywood. In July 2007, she was dead by her own hand, having washed down an overdose of Tylenol PM with bourbon in her Greenwich Village apartment. New York police say her handwritten note indicated she was at peace with her decision.

News of her suicide spread on the Internet, where she had gained a small but devoted audience as a blogger. A week after her suicide, her longtime romantic partner Jeremy Blake, 35, went missing, his clothes and wallet found on the Atlantic shore at Far Rockaway with a note implying he had walked into the sea.

Online conspiracy theorists quickly repeated Duncan’s accounts of being harassed by mysterious forces, including the Church of Scientology.Others saw a twinship with poet Sarah Hannah, herself a recent suicide, and still others saw parallels to an elaborate alternate reality game. Experts, some of whom had never met her, weighed in on everything from her mental state to her sexiness.

I’m Profiled In The Jewish Journal

Click here to read Brad A. Greenberg’s article:

He lives in a guesthouse occupying half a converted garage. In a narrow room smaller than a college dorm, a few blankets — Ford’s bed — lay on the ground between his desk and the bathroom door, against which two white pillows rest. A bookshelf is lined with Judaica items and books on the Talmud, Jewish history and English literature; most of the books he reads come from the library.

There is a fridge and microwave; cassette tapes of recorded phone conversations are piled on the floor, a smorgasbord of bottled vitamins and medication cover a white dresser with gilded accents. "The Hovel," as Ford endearingly refers to it, feels dank and smells worse, but for $600 a month, it’s home.

I’ve got little sense of smell, so I’m embarrassed that my place smells bad. As for the rest of me, as you can judge by the article, I smell like a rose.

In this tawdry, fallen world, it’s good that kids have role models like me.

A friend emails me: "Cathy would be very proud of you."

The Hollywood Reporter’s New Editor

Nikki Finke writes:

…But Kilcullen made clear to everyone inside the biz that he was looking for a softball editor to maintain the status quo, which consists of reporters never asking pesky questions of the paper’s advertisers and always running press releases exactly as written. As a result, Guider is not the firebrand sort to even try to retool the trades’ legendary type of journalism, which perpetuates show-biz spin and lies in order to prop up Hollywood’s most powerful.

…Instead, the Reporter, like Variety, makes 50 percent of its revenue from those annoying congratulatory-type ads, and 40 percent from those laughable Academy Awards “For Your Consideration” blowjobs, part of the $50 million award-lobbying ad market long dominated by the trades — which The New York Times and Los Angeles Times and now blogs are trying to infiltrate.

Tabloid Prodigy babe exposed as an uptight fraud

Burt Kearns blogs on TabloidBaby:

Urblogger, performance artist, genius savant and Air Supply fan Luke Ford does his latest, pointed, autistically focused and totally characteristic interview with writer Marlise Kast, who’s getting lots of ink for her book Tabloid Prodigy, and only recently getting a few kicks in the butt because of the hypocricy between the covers.

And Luke’s attempt to get to the soul of the woman whose book carries the subtitle Dishing the Dirt, Getting the Gossip, and Selling My Soul in the Cutthroat World of Hollywood Reporting reveals her to be something of a prig:

Writes Luke:

Marlise does write a lot in the book about preserving the treasure of her virginity… I had to find out if her virginity was still in tact, and if so, did I have a chance to take it…

His mission was to find out the passage in her book in which Marlise descrives offering up her treasured virginity at the age of 23.

Marlise, a self-described “proud Christian” who dedicates her book of scumbaggery and unethical shenanigans to “my heavenly Father, in whom I put my trust” while bragging within and in radio interviews about her greatest scoop— catching Don Johnson dipping solo into a hotel for a few hours with a bag full of sex toys, responds to Luke’s deflowering query:

Luke,

I just read your blog and was somewhat saddened by your introduction to the interview. Although I considered your questions extremely insightful, I’m not sure I quite understand your ultimate purpose in including me on lukeford.net. The fact that you "wanted a chance at my virginity" is not only insulting but extremely rude and unprofessional. Perhaps you can understand why I have no intention of answering any more of your questions.

Marlise has been pimping herself as a tabloid vet, adrenaline junkette and outdoorsy sexpot. But though she’s hoping to cash in on dishing it out, she can’t take it when it’s dished back. Looks like Marlise is no tabloid babe or prodigy, after all; only a confused young woman whose publisher packaged her wacky memoir as a tabloid keeper so readers might think it’s a followup to Burt Kearns’ classic Tabloid Baby.

Luke finds the passage anyway. And with that and his life’s work, he carries on where Howard Stern left off when he dropped from the public eye. Luke is the real tabloid prodigy. Read his Marlise story here. This is a guy who deserves his own reality show.

The Dog Days Of Summer Love

Eric Longabardi reports for ERSNews.com:

Meantime, sources familiar with NBC/Telemundo tell ERS that news executives such as Telemundo News Director Al Corral have taken to making light of the situation, going as far to joking with colleagues as to whether or not they would "see him tomorrow." An obvious reference to the possibility that the internal probe by NBC Universal could roll heads higher than Mirthala Salinas. In addition, sources familiar with Telemundo say three top executives, including news director Corral were not present at the station this past Friday, leading to speculation that an announcement would be forthcoming.

…Finally last night, in a show that Mayor Villaraigosa is back on message and making the media rounds and trying to put the still brewing scandal behind him. ERS caught up with the mayor by chance at a local Los Angeles celebration of the 60-year anniversary of the LA’s first broadcast TV news station KTLA. The event held at the Gene Autry Museum in Griffith Park had a chance meeting of ERSNews Co-Editor Roger Scott and the Mayor. The Mayor, of course the exceptionally talented media savvy politician that he is, seemed to know all about ERSNews.com and the Enterprise Report, which of course is a good thing! We hope he tells all his friends about us. We appreciate the mayor and Ms. Salinas giving us a story, served up at the right time to put ERSNews on the public and media radar because of our exclusive investigative reporting on this scandal.

Ted Turner’s Big Love

From Slate.com:

Robert Olen Butler won the 1993 Pulitzer for fiction for A Good Scent From A Strange Mountain, but at the moment a different selection from Butler’s oeuvre is attracting widespread notice within the literary community. That would be the e-mail he recently sent five graduate students (Butler is a professor of English at Florida State University) explaining in bizarrely fine-grained detail why his wife of 12 years, fellow novelist Elizabeth Dewberry, left him to be Ted Turner’s part-time girlfriend. You can read the e-mail below (thanks to Gawker.com, which posted the full text, and to Mediabistro.com, which broke the story).

"Elizabeth has never been able to step out of the shadow of the Pulitzer," Butler explains calmly. "The multitude of small reflections of regard that came my way inevitably threw a spotlight on the absence of those expressions of regard for her." Also, "she was molested by her grandfather from an early age," and later suffered through a "decade-long abusive marriage." Dewberry, Butler explains, "says I saved her life. But de facto therapy as the initial foundation of a marriage eventually sucks the life out of a relationship." Dewberry is drawn to Turner, Butler further explains, because Turner reminds her of her childhood abuser.

To be sure, Butler writes, the man once known in yachting circles as Captain Outrageous already has "several girlfriends." But "it is a very small number, and he does not take them up lightly and he gives them his absolute support when he does. And Elizabeth’s leaving me is as much about the three weeks a month she is alone as it is about the week a month she is with Ted."

The Mexican Mafia

MayorSam reports:

Tony Rafael’s debut book, The Mexican Mafia, went on sale last Wednesday. Many Mayor Sam readers already know Rafael as Wally Fay, editor of In The Hat, a popular, long-running expert narrative on Los Angeles gangs, crime, cops, and politics.

Described as the first book ever published on the subject, The Mexican Mafia documents the inner workings of the largely mysterious prison gang that controls a “40,000-strong street army” responsible for 100 homicides each year in Los Angeles alone.

In a radio appearance Saturday, Rafael described how La Eme is now expanding its system of “protection” levying beyond street corner drug dealers. Suffices to say, you’ll never see the weathered face of the lady selling churros at the corner of Beverly and Vermont the same again.

Marty Beckerman On Don Imus

Marty says: "The guy’s sin wasn’t that he made a racist joke; it was that his joke sucked. You need to have A+ material when you mine those waters for humor, and you need to pick the right targets, or else you’ll get crucified. If Howard Stern or Sarah Silverman had said that exact same thing, nobody would have blinked because they’re obviously putting on a comedic persona. That’s a very Jewish kind of humor—acting like a horrible person to criticize horrible people—but the last time I checked, Imus has yet to lop off his smegma-oozing foreskin."

Marty writes for Reason magazine:

All three instances of failed shock humor — Richards’s, Coulter’s and Imus’s — led to condemnations and calls for sensitivity from a myriad of politicians and activists; Democratic Senator and Savior Barack Obama chastised Imus for his "divisive, hurtful and offensive" words, further suggesting that no one with "a public platform" should attempt to find humor in race-based stereotypes.

The problem with this viewpoint is that the majority of Americans — of all colors and classes — have laughed at these hideous prejudices at some point; if you try to disassociate yourself from the hordes of hatemongers, your DVD collection better not include anything with Dave Chappelle, Chris Rock, Eddie Murphy, Sacha Baron Cohen, Mel Brooks, Trey Parker or Matt Stone.

My interview with Marty Beckerman.
