What Campus Rape Crisis?

Heather Mac Donald writes for the LA Times:

It’s a lonely job, working the phones at a college rape crisis center. Day after day, you wait for the casualties to show up from the alleged campus rape epidemic — but no one calls. Could this mean that the crisis is overblown? No. It means, according to campus sexual-assault organizations, that the abuse of coeds is worse than anyone had ever imagined. It means that consultants and counselors need more funding to persuade student rape victims to break the silence of their suffering.

It is a central claim of these organizations that between a fifth and a quarter of all college women will be raped or will be the targets of attempted rape by the end of their college years. Harvard’s Office of Sexual Assault Prevention and Response uses the 20% to 25% statistic. Websites at New York University, Syracuse University, Penn State and the University of Virginia, among many other places, use the figures as well.

And who will be the assailants of these women? Not terrifying strangers who will grab them in dark alleys, but the guys sitting next to them in class or at the cafeteria.

If the one-in-four statistic is correct, campus rape represents a crime wave of unprecedented proportions. No felony, much less one as serious as rape, has a victimization rate remotely approaching 20% or 25%, even over many years. The 2006 violent crime rate in Detroit, one of the most violent cities in the U.S., was 2,400 murders, rapes, robberies, and aggravated assaults per 100,000 inhabitants — a rate of 2.4%.

Such a crime wave — in which millions of young women would graduate having suffered the most terrifying assault, short of murder, that a woman can experience — would require nothing less than a state of emergency. Admissions policies, which if the numbers are true are allowing in tens of thousands of vicious criminals, would require a complete revision, perhaps banning male students entirely. The nation’s nearly 10 million female undergraduates would need to take the most stringent safety precautions.

None of this crisis response occurs, of course — because the crisis doesn’t exist.

Fred emails:

I’m shocked that such an intelligent piece was published in the LA Times. It must have been a mistake.

My favorite part of the article was at the end:

In a November column in the University of Virginia’s student newspaper, a third-year student gave the real scoop on frat parties: They’re filled with men hoping to have sex. Rather than calling these men "rapists," columnist Katelyn Kiley offered some practical wisdom to the women trooping off to Virginia’s fraternity row:

"It’s probably a good idea to keep your clothes on, and at the end of the night, to go home to your own bed. Interestingly enough, that’s how you get [the guys] to keep asking you back."

Maybe such young iconoclasts can take up another discredited idea: College is for learning. Fighting male dominance or catering to the libidinal impulses released in the 1960s are sorry substitutes for the pursuit of knowledge.

We All Love Gossip, But…

Chaim Amalek writes:

The American people are sophisticated enough to appreciate that high status men like presidents, senators, governors and Hollywood producers all have options for sexual infidelity that are not available to those of us forced to make do with booze and the internet, and that they often exercise those options. Hence, no harm, really, in the rumors of McCain and the thirty years his junior lobbyist except the embarrassment the knowledge of his friends exchanging knowing  nudges, nods and winks behind McCain’s back.  The real question is whether there was any sort of quid pro quo here, i.e. the exchange of bodily fluids for legislative favors.  And on this critical point, the New York Times, despite its best efforts, simply failed to make the case or even come close.  Luke, the American voter is not the Mr. Pecksniff you take him to be.

Regarding Obama, any moron with a $30 webcam and an internet connection can make a video and post it to YouTube.  And what’s his proof, that he supposedly "passed" a polygraph test, administered by someone who has an interest in convincing people that polygraph testing is worth something?    He might as well have asked an astrologer to demonstrate his veracity by reading his astrological charts.  Polygraph testing is one of the great hoaxes of the age.  Remember, the CIA traitor Aldrich Ames (like depressingly many others) repeatedly passed his tests even as he was betraying every secret he could get his hands on to the Russians.  It will take a hell of a lot more for anything this guy says to influence those who might vote for Obama.

The thought of a general election in which it is more or less confirmed, by election day, that one candidate has been selling his votes to lobbyists for sex and the other has been snorting coke while having extramarital sex with other men is too painful to contemplate.  But the evidence on hand today is that we shall face no such choice on either end.

Larry Sinclair Passes Drug Screening Test; Expert Polygrapher Revealed

BigHeadDC writes:

WhiteHouse.com has received the results from Larry Sinclair’s drug test earlier than expected. Sinclair, the Minnesota man who has accused Sen. Barack Obama of doing drugs and have a sexual encounter with him in 1999, passed with flying colors.

“He was tested for any and all chemical substances including illegal drugs that could cause an inaccurate polygraph test result,” according to the site. “There were no traces of any such substances found.”Also, the chief expert who conducted Sinclair’s polygraph has been revealed via a picture on the site (reprinted above left) as Ed Gelb, the former president of the American Polygraph Association.

Gelb has conducted several major polygraphs over the last thirty years, including those of the parents of JonBenet Ramsey and O.J. Simpson.

WhiteHouse.com is now waiting for a second polygraph expert to verify Gelb’s results.

If McCain’s Lying About Vicki Iseman, He’s Finished

I’m disappointed that all my right-wing friends and the entire right-wing commentariat dismiss the New York Times story on John McCain’s relationship with lobbyist Vicki Iseman.

If McCain’s lying that there was never a meeting about Iseman in 1999, if McCain’s lying about any of these related issues, he’ll never be president and the Republicans should dump him.

What’s my bet? I bet McCain’s lying. Nobody knows how this story will play out, but my best is that it will eventually sink McCain. My prediction is that as the days go by, we’ll find increasing evidence that McCain’s lying about Iseman and doing favors for Iseman.

I’m not arguing that adultery should automatically disqualify someone from the presidency. I’m arguing that if McCain is lying here, he should be disqualified.

Mickey Kaus writes:

What’s striking about the story so far is the extent to which core McCain supporters concede that if it’s confirmed McCain is through. I don’t see why that would have to be true–I’d think he could confess, cry, and weather the storm. (If the GOPs had someone to beat McCain they’d have beaten him already.) But here’s McCainiac David Brooks:

At his press conference Thursday, McCain went all-in. He didn’t just say he didn’t remember a meeting about Iseman. He said there was no meeting. If it turns out that there is evidence of an affair and a meeting, then his presidential hopes will be over.

That means, of course, that even if the story is true, loyal McCain supporters would be under tremendous pressure–even self-imposed pressure–to deny it. Is McCain point man Charlie Black saying anything he wouldn’t say if McCain did have the affair, and the meeting? A question to keep in mind.

**–Josh Marshall has more on McCain’s distinctly un-Clintonesque style of blanket denial. In another politician this would just be recklessness. Does McCain do it because he hasn’t been burned–i.e. the press has always given him a pass before?

Chabad Vs. Modern Orthodox

I spent my Shabbat evenly divided between Chabad and the Modern Orthodox.

Friday night dinner was with Chabad. It was a big raucous informal table. As Dennis Prager says, it seems like all Chabad shlichim (emissaries) are funny and all their wives are gorgeous.

After dinner, I had a long walk to a Modern Orthodox speech where everything was proper and even the cookies were pristine.

When you are surrounded by those who observe at a similar level to you, it’s easy to be open and passionate. The Modern Orthodox, by contrast, spend more time in the world and have to constantly make compromises between their modernity and their orthodoxy. This accounts for the MO’s wariness.

Russian Emigre Author Sana Krasikov

During LimmudLA, I become fascinated with the plight of Soviet Jewry.

My new cause is fueled by one Soviet Jew in particular — author Sana Krasikov (the Forward, the Atlantic, the New Yorker). She has a book of short stories coming out ("One More Year") and she’s easy on the eyes.

After confessing my amazement that I had just attended a presentation (video) on the first Soviet-Jewish generation, a Russian bloke confides in me that his interest too was not purely intellectual.

Sunday night, for her last presentation on some fancy pants bit of literature, Sana persuades her four attendees to give her high-brow efforts the big skip and join her at Clive Lawton’s lecture on Jacob (amazing stuff!).

LimmudLA Panel Discussion On The Jewish Future Between David Suissa, Josh Neuman, Clive Lawton and Arna Poupko Fisher

Panel Videos — loving scratching squeezing each other!

Sunday morning after breakfast, I run into Heeb magazine publisher Josh Neuman.

I tell him I’m expecting great things from him at today’s panel on the Jewish future.

He says he doesn’t know what to say.

I suggest he outline the threat that Heeb magazine poses to the Jews. "It would be the ultimate self-hating thing to do. Very post-modern."

When Is It OK For A Rabbi To Call A Lady A ‘Crack Whore’?

JewJew posts to the Jewish Journal forums:

There is NO EXCUSE for calling women sluts, whores and crack whores for the exclusive reason if a rabbi finds them not to be Jewish women. I am so disgusted at his language and disrespect and hope he moves far far away. I wonder how many others he turned away from Judaism over the years. I think those emails outweigh ANY good he has ever done. How many potential converts and their future families has he prevented from coming to Judaism? How many souls did he make suffer?

It’s like the mass murderer who people call ‘the nice guy.’ So what if he’s nice and done good things. If he does such bad ugly things it cancels out the good and he doesn’t deserve to have a place in the Jewish community or to speak on behalf of Judaism. I would never step foot in his home.

I always thought bigotry was one of the last pleasures still permitted to observant Jews. What’s the point of being Orthodox if you can’t sit around and call those outside the fold shiksas, shaygetzes and shvartzes (with a little "crack whore" thrown in)?

Beverly Hills PD Says Persian-Jewish Brother Shot Brother

The Jewish Journal reports:

Alfred Hakim, 49, an Iranian Jewish resident of Beverly Hills, was allegedly shot Wednesday night by his 47-year-old brother, Adel.

According to the Beverly Hills police department, officers responded at 9 p.m. to a call of shots being fired in the 400 block of North Palm Drive, and paramedics transported the victim to nearby Cedars Sinai Medical Center where he was listed as of Thursday as being in critical condition following surgery.

Sgt. Lincoln Hoshino of the Beverly Hills Police Department said within two hours of the incident, Adel Hakim was identified as the suspect and arrested by California Highway Patrol following a traffic accident he was involved at an undisclosed location in the San Fernando Valley.

Local Iranian Jewish leaders declined to comment on the incident but confirmed that both brothers are of Iranian Jewish heritage.
